Well, you've read the notes, these were the notes that were, this was the week that was, and now it is time to post until the crows come home.  Sorry, I got tired of the cows.

Friday Media Check... Well...  I've been playing stuff I imported into iTunes....

However, I think I may actually get to the Bollywood movie that DR MBarnum sent me last summer.  I was able to schedule a massage for 1:00 tomorrow afternoon(!!!!), and I believe I shall watch the movie whilst I relax post-massage until I have to get ready for the show.  So....

-Film at 11:00...  Or not... Hmm... me getting a massage....

Close your eyes!  Close our eyes!

I tried to play "The Woman In White" again today. I really don't give up easily.  It is still very much "letters home" from "Tell Me On A Sunday", flavoured with Aspects of aspects.  I'll take "Bounce" any time.

Thanks to a post from DR George yesterday, I have also revisited "Zorba" today.

Last night's viewing (did not finish it) was "Tintypes" which really was a disappointment.

Next up maybe a NW production of "Scrooge". I shall be looking for audience members Jed & Ann as well as that guy playing the lead role.

DR OzDerek went to "Mama Mia" last night but did not see Jose at all. Perhaps Melbourne is not in Indiana.

Finally caught up with yesterday's posts. Currently on the computer, I am listening to Brigadoon. What Dreams May Come is in the DVD player downstairs. A Tale of Two Cities and The Last Five Years are also in the cd player downstairs.

As for Mr. Haines and Mr. Geissman...

"Inchworm" - multi-track Mr. Haines... or even better yet, make it a duet for Mr. Haines, and yourself, BK!  ;)

From the Hoagy Carmichael Songbook:
"I Get Along Without You Very Well"
"Blue Orchids"
"The Nearness of You"

"The More I See You"
"Too Late Now"
"Do I Love You? (Do I?)" (Cole Porter)

For fun:
"Puppy Love"
Theme from "M*A*S*H*" (Suicide is Painless)
Theme from "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" - Actually, I think it would work beautifully slowed down to a ballad. -That sort of punky version a few years ago was fun.
The Closing Song from "The Donny & Marie Show"
"Rags to Riches"

...get my drift? ;)

*My apologies if Mr. Haines has already recorded any of the above songs...  My mind is truly shutting down right now...

And it's long past my bedtime. I am heading to bed. I don't know if I will be on much tomorrow as I am busy but I should be able to get on Saturday for a bit.

Jose, I have heard great things about this Cajun restaurant in Broad Ripple calle Yat's that is very reasonably priced. You might want to check it out, but I am sure you will find plenty of places to eat. :-)

Hi Hisaka and Ben.
Title: Re:THIS WAS THE WEEK THAT WAS
Post by: Ben on April 08, 2005, 05:03:26 AM
And hello to Tom and Hisaka.

It's drizzling here in NYC. I'm seeing Fascinating Aida tonight. I have one of their CDs and I've heard great things about them. I'm looking forward to it.

TD, my thoughts are with you at this difficult time.

Next week is another marathon theatre week. I'm seeing a friend's cabaret on Monday which benefits Dancers Responding to AIDS. Tuesday I'm seeing Chitty, Chitty Bang Bang. Wednesday I'm seeing Glen Gadberry Buck Ross, also known as Glengarry Glen Ross (the first title came from the names of two people in our University theatre department). Thursday I'm seeing Sweet Charity w/Charlotte D'Amboise. I am hoping to get another ticket to see Christina Applegate as well. She begins performances on April 18th. On Friday I'm seeing the Mufti performance of Darling of the Day. Wow, I'm tired just typing all that out.

Good morning, all!  It's a work-at-home day.  I've got some things for Liz Callaway and a lot of work for Anna Bergman.  I have to wander out at some point and purchase some blank CDs, return a score for Brent Barrett to the "Broadway Tenors" producer, and see a workshop of FOR THE LOVE OF TIFFANY, written by my friends Curtis and Matthew, which was a big hit two summers ago at the Fringe Festival.  I loved the show then, and I hope it goes well for them.  It's a very funny musical and I wish them well.   Please send them some good production vibes.

Media Alert on West 82nd Street:
CD:  The ENO recording for EMI of Humperdinck's HANSEL & GRETEL, which has never been released in the country on CD; it arrived from Amazon.uk yesterday.
        THE MOST HAPPY FELLA
DVD:  I'm still undecided; I hae to put away some discs, so I'll choose something while I'm tidying; I've a couple of Netflix things here, including THE WIDOW OF ST PIERRE
VHS:  I'm waiting for Rodzinski to bring over one of his movies

NEWS ON ANGEL JIM:

He called us Tuesday night, most distressed.  It seems his Parole Hearing lasted all of five minutes, and the head of it was very curt, not letting him speak, cutting him off every time he started to answer a question.  We are trying to put the best possible spin on all this--the teacher who gives you a toungue-lashing and then relents and gives you a B.  Whatever.

But no news yet on the outcome, and we may not know till Monday.  The parole board is getting a lot of new cases now because of the relaxation of New York's notoriously draconian Rockefeller Laws.  Perhaps it was indigestion.

Thanks for all your vibes.  I will let you know when the fat lady sings.

I got one of my cargo covers yesterday dear JRand. Funnily enough , this is the last one I won and I got it for only  99 cents plus postage, the postage was only about  $8 and change so I paid less than $10 for this elusive item, which is has been installed and is already in use in my car.  Meanwhile, the first one I purchased (which turned out not to fit) cost me around $40 all told and the other one I won on ebay  which cost around $32 with shipping, still has not arrived

I guess I really can't complain because all together I still spent waaaaaay less than the $250 the dealer wanted to replace the cargo cover

(hmmmm, maybe I can sell him my two spares for $50  a piece........)

btw, not to belabor the subject of Terri Schiavo, did anyone notice (as major news outlets failed to mention) that the man who organized the "children's protest"--resulting in a photo-op of arrested children, was a registered sex offender, guilty of two rapes, and the Shindler's grand-standing "spokesman" for the "culture of life", family values, etc. had been kicked out of his church for "inappropriate relations" with several female members of the congregation?

:o  I had not heard this  but when the Vixter heard on the news abouthe parents that brought their children down to the protest and encouraged them to break through police lines and allowed them  be arrested she was really angry.  She said  'Mama,  if you ever did that to me. I would call social services and tell them to take me away! Do those kids know that  now they may never get to be what they want to when they grow up because they 'll have police records?!! What if they want to be FBI guy or a CSI  or something and they'll say nope you can't do it because you were arrested when you were a little kid!!"

DR Laura asked how my roast beef turned out.

Okay. :)

I think I didn't realize that there is a difference between a pot roast (cooking longer at a low temp & a roast beef). I thought they were the same!

Anyhow I cooked it for 2 hours. First hour at 300F and second hour at around 250F.  I think if I did it again (i was trying for a roast beef), I would probably try it at 350F for an hour.

But thanks to everyone for their help!  HHW is a great learning tool!

The Hong Kong Musicals sound like a lot of fun.  And I have put HIGH AND LOW on my list to buy when I have some money.  Yes, movies like THE PROFESSSIONALS have disappeared from the big screen, but luckily we have them back on the home screen!

Media check:

DVD: Follow That Dream with Mr Elvis Presley, and discussed here a few weeks ago.

VHS:  More DARK SHADOWS, the experiments continue, and Burke Devlin's plane has gone down in the Amazon jungle

CD:  Party 2001! Macarena so that I can teach it tomorrow to a couple of actors in a play called ROUNDING THIRD.

Very excited to hear about the production of BUS STOP.  Mr Inge is probably my favorite playwright.  The play has a ghost over it, one that I think is difficult to get past, but hopefully a new LA production will do so.

DR JRand, have you read any of the unsuccessful plays that Inge wrote after DARK AT THE TOP OF THE STAIRS. I knew he had a series of flops in the 1960s, but I've never read (nor seen performed) any of them.

Reading that biography of Inge was a very sad read. The man, for all his success, never seems to have been very happy.

Returning after much errancy and truancy:

CD: A copy of Veronica Nunn's "American Lullaby," burned for me by the subway booth clerk at the station near my home.

As a native New Yorker, I naturally have a "smile and wave" relationship with a bunch of strangers who I see on a daily basis. Anyhow, this clerk's been on my daily "good morning" list probably for a year or more. One day, I walk by, and stop dead in my tracks, hearing a jazzy rendition of "Not While I'm Around" emanating from the booth. Seeing my reaction, the clerk showed me the CD, and we struck up a quick conversation. She wasn't at all familiar with Sweeney Todd, so I loaned her my copy of the original cast (yes, I warned her that the two Sweeney songs that Nunn sings [she also sings "Green Finch and Linnet Bird"] are not quite representative of the score).

No DVD/VHS stuff for the past few weeks: work, school, and taxes have been kinda keeping us busy...  :-\

In my VCR:  tapes to tape tonight's "Whose Line Is It Anyway?" and "Law and Order:  Trial By Jury" and "20/20" with Rosie O'Donnell (she was supposed to be on last week, but I guess her segment got bumped when the Pope died).  I'm going to my parents' house for dinner, but I'm hoping to be home in time to watch "L&O" so that I only have to tape two of these shows.  These are all at 10:00 p.m.!  I hate that.  And if "Battlestar Galactica" wasn't a repeat, that would be on the list, as well!

In my DVD player:  I rented "The Forgotten" with Julianne Moore and Gary Sinise.  I almost bought a used copy for only $10 (at the video store where I rented this copy), but I should watch it once, just in case I hate the movie. ;) After that will be disc one of season one of "Penn and Teller's Bullsh*t" that I got from Netflix!  I'll finally get to see what BK did on that show.  The other two discss are on their way.

In my CD player:  Donald Feltham's interview with BK!  After that will be BK's appearance on "2 on the Dial," the interview he gave in December on some other radio station.

DR JRand, have you read any of the unsuccessful plays that Inge wrote after DARK AT THE TOP OF THE STAIRS. I knew he had a series of flops in the 1960s, but I've never read (nor seen performed) any of them.

I've read two of the produced ones, but I can't remember which was which now!  One was called NATURAL AFFECTION.  One play was about a really horrible New York mother who when forced to choose between her son and hot studly second husband (lover?) chooses the sex.  The son brutally murders the neighbor girl attracted to him.

The other play was about an older gay man, his former young hustler and the boy's marriage to a young woman.  I believe Beau Bridges played the boy.

Both plays were very lurid, and not very good.

I have read a couple of Inge's later plays, maybe the ones DR ELMORE talks about and one novel called GOODBYE, MISS WYCKOFF or something similar that I liked a lot.  My favorite Inge will ALWAYS be PICNIC with COME BACK, LITTLE SHEBA a very close second.  Maybe it's a tie.

Watching The Marx Brothers At The Circus.  Hmmmmmm.....WHY would you start the movie with a boring number by the bland Florence Rice?  In fact there is way TOO much Rice and Kenny Baker in the first half hour.  I don't think I can finish this movie!

Random thoughts:

Today is one of the butt-ugliest days we've had all winter. The sky is black, the rain is pouring and it's cold.  Yesterday, the sun was shining, the air was clear and it was a crisp 62 degrees with a nice ocean breeze.

Sigh.

When I was in the Navy, I had many friends in the Marine Corps (despite some folks thinking sailors and Marines are like oil and water).

Anyway, one Christmas I was gifted with a Marine Corpuscle.  I still have it but a few pieces are missing.

Someone sent me the photo below....truly indicative of one of our hugest problems, donchathink?!!!?

Re:  Inge.  When I was working on my Masters at Reed College (which allowed Masters candidates to pretty much just do as they wished ;) ), I scored a production of Picnic.  The funny thing is we recorded in a building with a metal roof and there was torrential downpour that day, so I think all the playgoers who heard the music wondered why there was a Gamelan orchestra playing in "middle America."

Y'all probably know this already (because a more erudite bunch of folk would be hard to find), but there's a musical version of Come Back, Little Sheba starring (improbably, IMHO) Donna McKechnie.  The score kind of leaves me cold.  Sorry if there are lovers of said score here.  :)

DR WFO, could you explain something mathematical to me?  We love fractals in this here home environment, but I do not get how the formulae translate into the patterns.  For instance on our fractal calendar, the formula for April is z=z2 + c.  Is this some sort of plot-pointing on an axis to create the visual?  If so, what the heck is "c"?  Any edification would be most appreciated.

Well I am on my way to Seattle very soon. Must first hie myself up to Wilsonville and pick up my buddy Mark. We will be staying at Mark's boyfriend Jim's apartment, where hopefully I will be able to check in via Jim's computer.

Media check: Music for the drive up will include LYNN ANDERSON, RONNIE MILSAP, TIM MCGRAW, some 1970s stuff and maybe some 1980s stuff (I will sneak in some disco!).

My playing any Bollywood, Arabian pop, Japanese pop, or 1920s jazz in the car...well, it wouldn't be pretty...those country boys from Wyoming aren't very open minded! LOL!

Hmmm.  I did read (some of) Mandelbrot's book about fractals when he was on campus about 25 years ago.  But it all escapes me now.

Now is that formula actually z = z2 + c  or
                                             z = z² + c?

I would guess that c is an arbitrary constant.  What does the corresponding picture look like?

Don't get me started on the justice system in this country.  Someone should throw that judge behind bars is what someone should do.  And yes, every day dangerous criminals are set free to prey on people once again.  But a first-time offender for some creative accounting?  Sure, throw him in jail as if he were the equivalent of a serial killer.  Do you know, if people banded together (I mean the country) and said, "Stop, we're not having this anymore, and if you don't stop every person in this country will refuse to pay their taxes - want to see how fast things can change?  That's all it would take.

The story about Angel Jim breaks my heart.  It reminds me of something I saw on tv (yesterday I think).  I didn't catch most of it, but 3 ordinary women went into a women's prison to see a Day In The Life.  It was too heartbreaking to watch.  I mean they had one woman who had been trying to kill herself, and who accidently shot (and I think killed) her 1 yr old child. And so she was put in jail (for life I think).  Now this was an accident, and it was HER OWN CHILD (so obviously just that in itself would probably be torture enough).  But am I the only one who doesn't understand why they would put someone like this in jail for life?

I admit that I was woefully ignorant of the present state of the "justice" system and "correctional services" in this country until it touched my own life.  Things were not always thus.  Well, I was prompted to do a bit of research.

According to Human Rights Watch (http://www.hrw.org/backgrounder/usa/incarceration/), the US prison population has quadrupled since 1980.   We have a much higher percentage of our population in prison than any other Western country.

The "prison industry" is one of the fastest-growing businesses in the country.  In order to curb rising costs, of course, our New York Governor, like many others, has curtailed certain unnecessary expenses--job-training programs and educational opportunities for inmates.  You know, anything that might lead to turning them into good citizens.

Sorry if I'm venting too much.

We now return you to your regularly scheduled programming.

Convicted spammer sentenced to 9 years
Jaynes still won't go to prison, however, pending appealThe Associated Press
Updated: 1:35 p.m. ET April 8, 2005LEESBURG, Va. - A man convicted in the nation's first felony prosecution for illegal spamming was sentenced to nine years in prison Friday, but the judge postponed the sentence while the case is appealed.

Loudoun County Circuit Judge Thomas Horne said that because the law targeting bulk e-mail distribution is new and raises constitutional questions, it was appropriate to defer the prison time until appeals courts rule.

Jeremy Jaynes was convicted in November for using false Internet addresses to send mass e-mail ads through an AOL server in Loudoun. Prosecutors said Jaynes sent more than 10,000 spam e-mails over three days in July 2003 from his Raleigh, N.C., area home, using the Internet to peddle sham products and services such as a "FedEx refund processor."

A jury had recommended the nine-year prison term.

Jaynes told the judge that regardless of how the appeal turns out, “I can guarantee the court I will not be involved in the e-mail marketing business again.”

Lisa Hicks-Thomas, the prosecutor, said she was pleased with the ruling and confident that the law would be upheld on appeal.

“We’re satisfied that the court upheld what 12 citizens of Virginia determined was an appropriate sentence — nine years in prison,” said Hicks-Thomas.

Jaynes' sister, Jessica DeGroot, was also convicted in the November trial, but Horne dismissed that verdict a month ago, saying he found no "rational basis" for it. He upheld Jaynes' conviction, however. A third defendant, Richard Rutkowski was acquitted in the jury trial.

Virginia, where AOL is based, prosecuted the case under a law that took effect in 2003 barring people from sending bulk e-mail that is unsolicited and masks its origin.

Defense attorney David Oblon argued that nine years was far too long given that Jaynes was charged as an out-of-state resident with violating a Virginia law that had taken effect just two weeks before.

EBay scammer sentenced to 6 years
Judge blasts 'complete lack of remorse'The Associated Press
Updated: 12:23 a.m. ET April 6, 2005PORTLAND, Maine - A federal judge rejected a plea bargain from a Yarmouth man accused of conducting a series of Internet scams after the man threw a pitcher of water across the courtroom at a prosecutor who called him a thief.

U.S. District Judge George Singal on Monday sentenced Charles Stergios, 21, to more than six years in prison for scams that cheated 321 people out of $421,000. Singal said he imposed a stricter sentence because Stergios had fought efforts to pay back his victims.

"You have shown a complete lack of remorse in this case," Singal said. "In my view, you are likely to perpetrate when you come out of incarceration."

Stergios wrote bogus checks to buy merchandise through eBay and sold items he didn't own, according to court records. His victims reported that he mocked them and sent insulting e-mails to those who complained about being cheated.

Stergios was to be sentenced Friday but the hearing was postponed after he threw a water pitcher at Assistant U.S. Attorney Halsey Frank.

In rejecting the plea bargain agreement, Singal sentenced Stergios to a year and three months more than prosecutors had requested.

In court, Stergios said he couldn't help himself and that he had become addicted to money the way others get hooked on drugs or alcohol. "Money was my drug, my obsession," he said.

Among Stergios' victims was a military serviceman who wanted to sell his computer to buy Christmas presents for his children. Another was a retired New York City detective.

Stergios pleaded guilty Oct. 18 to bank fraud, wire fraud and mail fraud. He acknowledged defrauding more than 50 victims out of more than $200,000. But more victims and more losses came to light after the plea was entered.

I think my favorite part of this story is the con man's excuse that he  "became addicted to money"

Amazing what an hour of massage can do for a person.  And amazing just how much tension one can hold in one's neck and shoulders!  Yikes!  I knew I had been busy, busy, busy the past couple of weeks, but I had no idea just what kind of toll it was taking on my body.  Heidelberg - Yes! his Mom named him after the city in Germany - also has some chiropractic training - so he was also able to get my neck and spine realigned.  I owe a big Thank You to my regular guy back in Richmond for the referral - Heidelberg is a former student of his.  I'm feeling very relaxed, and also a bit re-energized.

*Best of all, Heidelberg is Filipino!  Both of his parents are Filipino, and his mom named him after the city where one of the national heros went to school.  Consequently, he usually goes by his nick-name, Berg.  Who'd of thunk?

I agree, the fraud does seem more "penalty worthy' but from my reading of the article ( and lord knows I could have misread this) it seems as if he has been charged  under a anti-spamming law.

The cherry trees in Washington DC are very famous, aren’t they?

When the cherry trees in Washington DC bloom each year, a festival is held celebrating Japan's arts and culture (http://www.nationalcherryblossomfestival.org/cms/index.php?id=390), taking place right now.  The trees were a gift from the city of Tokyo to the United States, and are loved.

I was also pleased to see that Amazon is now selling those Sepia reissues of Broadway show albums. They've got TWO'S COMPANY (Bette Davis) and SEVENTEEN/HIGH BUTTON SHOES on their list for imminent release.

I can now retire my worn out TWO'S COMPANY LP after decades of playing.

I can't wait for this also, although I've only had the album for a couple of years.  I also made a CD of the album for a friend of mine...now I'll have the real CD with (hopefully) much, much, much (that's three muches) better sound quality!

btw, not to belabor the subject of Terri Schiavo, did anyone notice (as major news outlets failed to mention) that the man who organized the "children's protest"--resulting in a photo-op of arrested children, was a registered sex offender, guilty of two rapes, and the Shindler's grand-standing "spokesman" for the "culture of life", family values, etc. had been kicked out of his church for "inappropriate relations" with several female members of the congregation?
There must be something wrong with that church, then.  "Inappropriate relations" with female members of the congregation is impossible, only male-to-male relationships are inappropriate, everyone knows that!

LOL! Nope, but I have read THE HAPPIEST CORPSE I"VE EVER SEEN and was very disappointed with it. I liked his other survey books very much.

However, just this very morning, I ordered his 1930s musical survey book (the last in the series). I wasn't aware it had been released and just stumbled across it today.
I happened to like HCIES.  I also read it keeping in mind what Mordden states at the very beginning, in the introduction: unlike the other volumes in the series, HCIES is a rant, not a survey.  As such, it was entertaining and thought-provoking.

Peggy ate half the cover of the book on the 30s before I could get to it, however.  She also ate Julia Child.  She's a happy and wonderful dog, but I wish she would wait until after I've read the books before eating them.

By the by, Mordden mentions our esteemed BK's recording of Colette Collage in HCIES, page 22.  And I quote:

Quote
Interestingly, the recording of Colette Collage uses two stars, Judy Blazer for Willy and Judy Kaye for Maurice.

OK, so it's just one sentence, and he doesn't actually name BK.  Still, Mordden rarely mentions recordings of shows, so the mention is noteworthy.

It's in my stack of must-listens in my room, for when I can give it the time it deserves again.

As you can tell, the bitch is back.  I've just come from the reading of FOR THE LOVE OF TIFFANY, which was wonderful:  funny, satiric, silly, low comedy of a very high order, with most of the folk from the Fringe Festival 2003 performances:  Nancy Opel, Jonathan Dokuchitz, Amanda Green, and others, directed by Stafford Arima, director of ALTAR BOYZ.  The reading was set up by the producers of AVENUE Q.  The large crowd loved the show, and I liked the new material.  I wish my friends a huge success with it.

I had a dream....

...last night.  I've only just remembered it.

And believe it or not, it was about "A.I."  (no GROANS).

In this dream I picked songs for Bo and Carrie to sing this past week instead of the ones they sang.

Bo sang "Old Devil Moon" from "Finian's Rainbow."

Carrie sang "I Don't Know How to Love Him" from "J.C. Superstar."

They were both magnificent.

Please...think good thoughts for me...pray, if you don't mind...or simply wish me a speedy recovery.

This kind of thing hasn't ever happened before....

...and I'm frightened, ToTo, I'm frightened!

DRSWW, what a sweet thing to say!

Actually, I have had my gripes with Mr Mordden since the publication of his book on Rodgers & Hammerstein.  When Ted Chapin learned I knew Ethan, he asked me to make an introduction since he was interested in talking to Ethan about a book on R&H.  Ethan met me at the Drama Book Shop, we taxied to Mr Chapin's office, then on 57th and Madison, I recall.  The luncheon was lovely, Ted liked Ethan, and a couple of years later Abrams published the book.  My good ex-friend Mr Mordden thanked everybody in his acknowledgements to the R&H book except the person who introduced him to Mr Chapin and who called Mr Chapin regularly to see how the possibility of Ethan's doing the book was progressing.

In THE HAPPIEST CORPSE  . . . Mr Mordden can't get his information straight on the history of The New Amsterdam Theatre Company's rise and fall, even if he were on its board, much less the death of its producer and our mutual friend Bill Tynes.  When it comes to JUBILEE, his information is incorrect, and in SING FOR YOUR SUPPER, he totally ignores me, even though his information on JUBILEE's score is heavily reliant on the photocopy of my newly created vocal score I gave him in 1986!   He makes an offhand comment about all current versions performing "There's Nothing Like Swimming," an interpolation Tommy Krasker and I made, since the music for "Gather Ye Autographs" (a number he never mentions) is lost and it's now unperformable in the show.  On the other hand, we felt as well that the Autograph number was one more name dropper in a score filled with name dropping and that the Swimming number was a good idea for the leading comedienne.

Interestingly, he talks positively about the worst version of JUBILEE I've seen of four:  Carnegie Hall, 1998, directed by Herb Ross, who was a horror, as was a miscast Sandy Duncan, who managed to screw up both her big numbers "Begin the Beguine" and "Just One of Those Things."

He also makes a few rude and incorrect comments on the Milton Aborn revival of BABES IN TOYLAND, which slight Mr Aborn, and show he didn't do enough homework.

I just found I did not agree with Ethan about much of what he had to say about musicals of the last 15 years or so. It disappointed me because I found I agreed with SO MANY of his earlier opinions.

Because it was a rant, there wasn't the degree of analysis that I so admired in the earlier books. But I'm so glad you enjoyed it.

Good Afternoon!

Back from Target... With pictures!  -I'll do my best to get some posted tonight after the show.

And speaking of National Empanada Day... I went to a place called "Patties from Jamaica".  I found a few writes ups here and there about the place.  Basically a counter space selling Beef Patties (turnover like deals), and a few other Jamaican specialties - chicken curry, goat curry, rice and peas (beans), etc.  Nothing above $4.00 on the menu...

Well, I ordered two beef patties - the only type he sells. And I ate the two patties.  They were good, but they didn't taste as authentic as I thought would taste - at least from some of the mini-raves I came across.  But, again, they were good, and for a $1.00 a piece, quite a bargain.  *I also bought a loaf(!) of "hard dough bread" for a $1.25(!!!).  It's basically a loaf of "coco bread" - basic white bread.  Very fresh, and very good.   Even better toasted!

;)

Ah yes, HANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSON.  My Mother, the world’s first un-stage mother, would rue the day that she put me in that show.  When I was five, my Mother was the director of a junior high school production of that show.  Since Hans was being played by an 8th grader, she thought it might be cute to find some real little kids for Hans to tell the stories.  Big Mistake! That was fifty years ago, and I have barely been off the stage since.

Well, I have to report on my evening. Since 8:00, I have been setting up my new television set.

Yes, after I got my tax information, I found I had money to buy a larger HDTV for my den. It came on WEdnesday, but I needed some help moving other TVs in the house to different rooms to make way for this new one so a friend came over at 8:30 tonight and helped me shift TVs around.

Of course, then all the various cables had to be unplugged from the old and plugged into the new. That took some time since cables somehow manage to snake themselves into bizarre shapes during the years they are in one position.

And then, when everything was attached, it was time to turn it on and start calibrating. Every input - digital cable, DVD, HDTV receiver, laserdisc, VCR - has its own input and its own special needs.

I started with DVD and then went to HDTV. And then I stopped to come to the computer and will soon be going to bed. Tomorrow will be more calibration and fine tuning to get everything, especially the DVD input, looking the best it can look.

THE TONIGHT SHOW in high definition looked simply amazing.

I didn't mention what I bought though I believe I've mentioned before what I had been considering.

It's a JVC 52" D-ILA HDTV. D-ILA stands for digital image light amplification. Instead of the spinning color wheel bouncing light off one chip of most DLP models, this has three separate chips for the blue-green-red colors that light from the lamp is reflected off of.

The HDTV image looks very creamy and solid. I'm going to have to tinker more with it to get a similar smoothness to the DVDs I played with tonight. I put in THE INCREDIBLES, BATMAN & ROBIN, and GOLDENEYE just for testing - one or two scenes. I still have other things to try tomorrow with the DVDs. The HDTV is set to go - couldn't be better.

If I get some time tomorrow, I'll grab the camera and snap a picture. I think this is the size screen I can live and be happy with.

And I missed LAW & ORDER: TRIAL BY JURY tonight, so if anyone saw it, let me know if it's an episode I'll want to watch out for in reruns.

Just got back from singing the national anthem at the Indians game with my choir. Funnily enough a guy in our choir dates the sister of my cousin's boyfriend. He came to the stadium to take her car and work on it for her and my cousin came with unbeknownst to me.Well she got there after the national anthem so she didn't know I was there and I found out she was there about 5 minutes before we had to leave. She was suprised also and we had a hugfest for about the entire five minutes. It was a nice little reunion since I hadn't seen her since the beginning of January, but then I had to leave. I got yelled at for running to her by one of the security people. :P

And good fortune for Bonnie Prince Charlie as he attempts to make a go of this second marriage. I think he should be able to this time around since he's obviously marrying for love and not so his wife can produce an heir.

"Let us follow a corpuscle on its journey.  Oh, my mistake; I thought I was the corpuscle.  As you know, there is constant warfare between the red and white corpuscles.  Now then, baboons, what is a corpuscle?"

"That's easy.  Foist izza cap'n, then izza lootenant, then izza corpuscle."

"That's fine.  Why don't you bore a hole in yourself and let the sap run out?  We now find ourselves among the Alps.  The Alps are a very simple people, living on a diet of rice and old shoes.  Beyond the Alps lies more Alps, and the Lord Alps those that Alps themselves.  We then come to the bloodstream . . ."

Yes, DRTCB - Mink stole and blue jeans.  I think it makes a statement without hitting someone over the head with the message, you know.  It says, I know I am at the theatre which is a temple of culture, but it is also one of business.

Today has been Marx Bros. on TCM.  I have been laughing all day.

Nice TV DRMATTH.  Wow!

Only a few hours until the big event and I still haven’t figured out what to get Chuck and Camil for a wedding present.  I mean, his and hers horse blankets seems so clichéd.

It's always the thought that counts, DR TCB.  However, I have to ask: What gifts will you buy for their horses then?

;)

-That was a little too easy.

Good Evening!

Good show.  A slightly reserved audience, but since it was a Friday night...

DRs Ginny, JRand and Joey - The temp in the hall has still been a little on the warm side, so...  A removable layer would probably be best.

*Of course, since the temp in Memphis was kept colder than the Ed Sullivan Theatre, maybe it's actually quite comfortable in there, and I just got used to shivering.  ;)

Dear Jane, you and I and der Brucer absolutely MUST get together and record trios!  We could set musicology back by decades...which might not be a bad thing!

The way Mr. Mordden worded the Colette thing is completely inept.  It READS as if the Judys are playing Maurice and Willy.
That is probably due to my quoting just the one sentence.  Out of context, that sort of thing, y'know...

Well, I did take four rolls of film, so....

;)

Actually, the roll of black & white film came out rather well.  But it was sort of "strange".  I had taken some pics with the disposable B&W camera about a year ago - maybe more - and the "older" pics came out better than the new ones.

And last night you got drunk! I know I shouldn't but, ROTFLOL.  I gather this was a result of your good deeds.
Actually....uh, no.

Der B and I had dropped by Partners (http://www.partners-bistro.com/) for one - count it - ONE cocktail before heading home for dinner.  As luck should have it, just as we were at the tail end of said cocktail, a fellow we'd chatted with briefly before came over and struck up a conversation.  Well, it would have been rude to just get up and leave just as things were getting started, so we ordered a second round, and der B and Jeff got into an interesting conversation about the legal rights of Indian tribes.

And then we were all joined by Peter, another fellow we've chatted with before.  Peter is this wonderful old Leprachaun from Berlin, the best way I know to describe him.

One thing led to another, and the conversation became quite enjoyable.  And der B and I had more than another round of drinks each.  I'm just glad we weren't having Pan-Galactic Gargle Blasters.  As it was, we were drinking Manhattans, which are damaging enough.

We got home, at long last, and didn't even bother with dinner, instead tucking ourselves into bed and sleeping with the dogs using us as their pillows.

The second annual Rehoboth Beach Wine and Food Festival (http://www.rehomain.com/Food%20&%20Wine%20Fest.html) is next weekend.  Boy, are we in trouble.

Bedtime here also. I must be up early to clean but it is a joyful, joyful day as it will be the first time I've mowed since October or November! I never would have thought I would be this excited about mowing! :-)
