Well, you've read the notes, you've understood their deepest meanings, you're going to the Estate Sale vicariously, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home from the Estate Sale, although I personally won't be bidding on them. I may not be doing anything, since I just noticed there's a two hundred dollar (refundable) registration fee. Refundable or not, I don't like that one bit.
-
And the word of the day is: TESSITURA!
-
Rodzinski, I believe the name tag says "Assitant Trainee".
-
Okay, didn't know if there was more to it than that.
Leslie Nielsen's longer Captain's Log reading at the Talent Show and G. Graham's reactions are mucho hilarioso.
-
Not to mention the uncut Hold Me, Touch Me, Thrill Me.
-
Of course, all the character build up at the beginning was intentional, and makes everything that follows funnier, at least I think so. Getting to the planet faster means all the character bits come in the middle of the film, where they don't really belong.
-
Uncut and featuring Gerrit snapping photos as well. "Who took that picture? I want that film!"
Your way was much more subtle. Even just the series of shots that show the hallways, giving a clearer sense of the ship and the rooms within. One can imagine they thought they had to quicken the pace, get right into the middle of things, and they do achieve a certain momentum, but they lost something that way too. What holds, either way you slice it, (pun intended) is the characters and interactions.
-
I almost forgot I saw most of a Maurice Chevalier film this morning, until someone called and interrupted. It was called FOLIES BERGERE. Quite funny with MC in dual roles and Ann Sothern and Merle Oberon lookin' good. Also, some crazy musical numbers. I love how in 30s musicals, the numbers that take place on stage would be A. impossible to stage on any Broadway-type stage and, B. Difficult for any live audience to even see.
-
BK, thought you'd enjoy The Violent Men!
Rodzinski, Rancho Deluxe...very funny.
-
As I've said before, it was the era of Airplane. That's what they wanted the film to be, but that's not the film we made. Audiences weren't buying ANY other kinds of comedy in 1982, so we failed. Their attempts to MAKE it like Airplane failed because the film doesn't have those kinds of gags. We're quite literally a musical version of Alien or It! The Terror from Beyond Space. The narrative is in that classic style - and interestingly, for me anyway, that's why the film in its original version, seems to play better now than it did then. As I've also said, I needed another four to eight weeks with a different editor.
-
I sat way too long in a VERY hot Jacuzzi. I'm still feeling a bit wonky from it.
-
TESSITURA!
What will tomorrow's word be - MAZEPPA?
-
Rodzinski where did you see the director's cut of THE MONSTER WASN'T NICE?
-
BK, thought you'd enjoy The Violent Men!
Rodzinski, Rancho Deluxe...very funny.
Tom McGuane is responsible for two of my all-time faves, RANCHO DELUXE and 92 IN THE SHADE. 92 features the great Warren Oates.
-
I've always wanted to see a production of Mazeppa.
-
The Director fired one my way, CP.
Here's a topic for fun and fascination. What actor would you say you have watched the most films featuring him or her?
For me, it would be either George Segal or Warren Oates.
Then, someone like Ward Bond, who just shows up in a lot of stuff, he could be right up there.
-
The most films of a particular actor that I've seen are probably Cary Grant, Gary Cooper, or Errol Flynn.
-
Grant is probably in my top 5 or so. Flynn, they've been showing a little bio movie about on Turner this week, and it made me realize how few of his films I've really seen.
The clips from GENTLEMAN JIM look really good.
-
Der B and I had a busy day.
First, we were off to take more pictures. The woman has two dogs she can't care for, a chocolate lab that is desperate for attention and a husky puppy who...well, he's a puppy. But she'd rather pay attention to her exotic pets than take care of the dogs. Sad.
We had Peggy with us, both to give her some special time and to give the other dogs a chance to enjoy the back yard. Peggy still wants to jump the fence, and we either have to watch her or close the doggy door. The other dogs are getting tired of having to cross their legs all the time. :-\
Later, home again, we went out for dinner. Der Brucer had a hankering for chicken pot pie, which they do very well at Partners (and I don't do nearly as well). But in the middle of dinner I was hit by chronic depression, totally spoiling my appetite and the evening. Bleh. The only recourse was to come back home and get to bed for a few hours.
Such a thrilling day.
-
Good morning, all! DRDan(the Man), good to see you!
In catching up with the posts from page 5 on, I realized that one of my favorite westerns was OLD YELLER. It is a western?
So, I'm off to do some BABES IN TOYLAND edits. Tomorrow I may be E&T; I see the new surgeon in the morning and I'm still unsure if he's redoing the surgery with me as an outpatient or doing a really thorough exam. My pre-arrival instructions seem very intense for a look. It's nine months now, so I just want the damned thing taken care of.
I hope everyone has a good day, especially the Indianapoils-bound MAMA MIA delegation.
-
Good Morning! I'm up getting ready to leave for Indianapolis. I'll be heading home in about 20 minutes or so. Now if I could just find a matching pair of black socks! ;-)
-
We have to wear MATCHING socks? Oh my, well it will take me a bit longer to get ready then!
Tessitura is so much more demurer than all them other ladies because.....
Mazeppa is, of course, a schleppa.....

Sending good vibes to DRELMORE for tomorrow! ~~~~~~~~~~~~
-
I meant to post this yesterday…
I’m not a big fan of Western Movie, but Clint Eastwood and Giuliano Gemma were my favorites in that kind movies. And I was a fan of TV series “Rawhide”
My Italian teacher said they say Spaghetti Western Movie, in Italy, instead, we, in Japan, call it Macaroni Western Movie. It’s funny, isn’t it? I’m very curious to know how you DRs call it in the US/ Australia/France.
-
DR JOSE: Didn’t know that your family has enjoyed to go out to see the Cherry Blossoms annually… I see cherry blossoms on the banks of the Potomac every year, and saw them just yesterday too, on TV and there was very crowded viewing people.
-
Good Vibes to you, DR ELMORE.
-
...'bout ready to leave for Indianapolis! It's a beautiful day for the trip. See you soon, Jose, JRand, and Joey. And I'll be back later tonight with photos for all.
-
Last night, DR JRand wrote and asked me:
"DRMATTH what a great photo of your TV! That is something else that is on my "buy" list when I start working again. Wow! Are commercials broadcast in HD?"
No, they are almost always photographed in standard definition video, so when commercials come on with a HD program, the video is shown in the center of the screen with black bars on the sides. When the program resumes, the screen opens up and the entire TV window is filled with picture again.
It's much the same thing as in FANTASIA 2001 if you're watching it on a widescreen TV. The movie fills the entire frame until "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" comes on which is then shown in the center of the screen with black bars on the sides as it wasn't filmed in a widescreen aspect ratio.
-
GENTLEMAN JIM is a very entertaining movie.
One thing I found fascinating about Errol Flynn when I read Charles Higham's biography about him was that in real life he was not much of an athlete, and in movies like GENTLEMAN JIM where he played a boxer, the sports scenes had to be filmed in small bursts because he simply didn't have the stamina for long takes.
Watching him perform derring-do in ROBIN HOOD and THE SEA HAWK gives us esactly the opposite impression. that he's in fantastic shape, but such was not actually the truth.
-
Yes, I meant to watch or record THE ADVENTURES OF ERROL FLYNN off TCM last week, but I missed both opportunities. It is scheduled to be shown a couple of more times this month as it's Errol Flynn month at TCM.
The documentary is also going to be included in the Errol Flynn boxed DVD set coming out soon.
-
Matt, is this a new bio of Flynn? I read one years ago (the one that suggested the affair between Flynn and Tyrone Power), but is there another one that I should read?
-
Well my connection is DOWN again! I will soon be off to the theatre.
MR BK - you will get the $200 back - and if the estate sale is for someone who was once well known, just imagine what might be there? A small price to pay - and didn't you pay more for the Jack Benny items? And who knows who might be there?
-
Matt, is this a new bio of Flynn? I read one years ago (the one that suggested the affair between Flynn and Tyrone Power), but is there another one that I should read?
No, that's the same bio. There is a more recent one about him that I haven't read (he's not actually a great favorite of mine though I like him in some films).
I understand that the TCM biography on Flynn shoots down the Nazi rumors and makes no mention of any bisexual dalliances.
-
The FLYNN documentary has a couple of interesting interviews, and some OLD ones that have already been seen. And it seems to infer that TOO MUCH, TOO SOON was a movie biography of John Barrymore rather than Diana. Worth having for the deHavilland interview, though!
Well since I live closest, I guess I am the last to leave for the theatre.
Good search vibes for MR BK at the estate sale.
Hmmmmmmmm.....performer I have seen most often....hmmmm....Katharine Hepburn possibly.
-
Thanks for the TV info DR MATTH!
I have on my matching socks and I am off!
-

Well, of course not, we are too busy trying to prove that Abe Lincoln was gay.
-
Well the performer I have seen most often would have to be Judy Garland, followed closely by Jimmy Stewart.
-
Jrand, are you going to miss the curtain?
-
Sometimes, I wonder where these thoughts come from that seem to just pop out of my head? But can you imagine, if she had lived, seeing Judy Garland singing I'M STILL HERE on stage?
-

HA--exactly! I would immediately say someone like Kate Hepburn or Cary Grant, but I have a feeling that I've seen charactor actors like Henry Jones or Reta Shaw in more movies than the former two combined.
-

Or "Losing My Mind".
-
Glenn Erickson has a total rave of the LI'L ABNER DVD on his website. Makes me all the more eager to get my hands on the DVD.
I really respect his reviews even when I occasionally disagree with them, but poor man has a very limited knowledge of Broadway and can't ever make apt comparisons when he's discussing Broadway shows made into films.
-

Well, if we are going to go that direction, then probably Emil Sitka, becuase you can count each one of those Three Stooges shorts as a different film. Hell, in that case, the answer would probably be Moe Howard.
-
Did I tell everyone (does everyone even care) that I will be playing Buffalo Bill Cody in ANNIE GET YOUR GUN in June? We start rehearsals next week. Now, if I could only get Brent Barrett to play Frank Butler..........
-
Good Morning!
I'm up! I'm up!
And I must get going... soon...
DR TCB - Congrats!
DR Rodzinksi - As for the pic in the tunnel.... Ssshhhh... I thought we weren't supposed to tell anyone... ;)
-Actually, it came out looking "artistic" due to the low light. I need to futz with it, and then I'll post.
DRs Jrand, Ginny and Joey - See you soon!
As for actor/actress I've seen the most on screen... Hmmm... Probably Gene Hackman - isn't he in everything?
OK - Time for me to get ready for the matinee...
Laters...
-
I had a perfectly pleasant night's sleep once I actually fell asleep, which I think was around three in the morning. It was one of those nights - just a thousand things going on in ye olde cranium, some of which I even scribbled on my bedside pad.
I suppose I should make myself presentable for the Estate Sale. They have a "preview" at ten, the auction begins at eleven.
-
TESSITURA!
-
Good morning all!
Best wishes to the Indianapoils-bound Mama Mia group! I hope you have a WONDERFUL day! We want a full report with pictures (if possible)!
All good wishes to DR Elmore for tomorrow. Be well!!
[move=left,scroll,6,transparent,100%]~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~[/move]
I want to see the pictures DR Jose took!
I forgot about yesterday being the wedding day for Charles and Camilla. My feelings on it is that I think they both deserve to be happy but I dearly hope that neither one of them had anything to do with Diana’s death. I’m not saying she was murdered but I also can’t totally dismiss the possibility.
I wanted to tell you about the storm we had the other day. It was really something. We had wind gusts of about 40 MPH. No joke. What was funny was that one guy lost his toupee and was chasing it down the street. I wish I had my camera with me (with batteries that were FULLY charged).
My favorite umbrella was ruined. The wind grabbed it and turned it inside out. I bought a new one on online called a “GustBuster”. It has a vent in it so the wind can’t do that to it. I hope it works.
Gentleman Jim is a very good Flynn movie but then, most of his were.
My parents didn't really restrict my reading material when I was young. I read, My Wicked, Wicked, Ways when I was in my early teens. What an education THAT was! :o :D ;)
I’m starting to catch up on what I missed. I am so very sorry to hear about “Angel Joe”. It’s not fair. I don’t know what to say.
I am also very late but I want to express my deepest sympathy and condolences to DR TD.
The same for your friend, DR Rodzinski. I am very sorry for the loss of your friend.
-
Oh and I meant to tell you that I did order the Midget Lemon Tree. Not sure when it will arrive but I need to go buy a planter and dirt for it.
-
Lemon Tree very pretty.
-
I'm a bit bored of our incessant windy days here in the City of Studio.
Hisaka, the Eyetalian westerns were called Spaghetti westerns in the US. In fact, I believe the phrase was coined here.
-
Danise, I of all people should not be correcting other people's facts, but I believe it is Angel Jim. Joe being Mr. Orr's other half.
-
I wasn't able to find the pictures of DR Ben's bears & other stuff animals. Did I miss them?
Don't be suprised if I'm a bit E & T this week as well. I have a feeling I will be putting in more overtime at work. I hate it that my boss is bringing me home. Of all times! I want to ride the bus in case they are doing counts of how many are riding and getting off at my stop.
I've sent an e-mail to the county commissioners, some of the local news shows and the newspaper. I haven't heard back from any of them. I don't know what else to do. It's very upsetting.
It's the working people who use the express busses. They sent a rep from HARTLINE on my girlfriends bus (another one they are wanted to change) and he had the nerve to tell them that "HARTLINE isn't taking the bus away from them, just changing the route."
Well, excuse me, but if I can't get to bus because of the change you are making, isn't THAT the SAME THING as taking it away? Geez. Sorry for the rant.
I thank goodness that I bought Bonnie when I did. I might have to drive a very long way to catch the bus if this happens. I've already offered to drive some of the others that would be displaced but as they pointed out, what happens if I have to work late (which seems to be happening more and more) or take a day off from work.
-
Danise, I of all people should not be correcting other people's facts, but I believe it is Angel Jim. Joe being Mr. Orr's other half.
Opps, I am sorry. Forgive my fingers, they know not what they type! :D
-

I really respect his reviews even when I occasionally disagree with them, but poor man has a very limited knowledge of Broadway and can't ever make apt comparisons when he's discussing Broadway shows made into films.
Frances Farmer's first husband is reviewing DVDs from beyond the grave? (Glenn was one of several monikers Leif used in his career). ;)
I have today OFF!!! Yay. Thank heavens I was hired by a British Rector who told me he thought "this American custom of only 2 weeks holiday a year is ridiculous." So I get 4 weeks off every year, which is very hard to schedule. I have today and next Sunday off (we'll be at the coast next Sunday), and then we think we'll take a driving vacation to Yellowstone with the kids in July or August, when I'll have my next 2 weeks off.
-
Just let the Savant know where you read the first rave of the Li'l Abner DVD. You hear it all here first.
Off to the Estate Sale.
BUTT - before I go, I picked up a message that had been left for me last night by my pal, Miss Barbara Deutsch, one of my four book guinea pigs. It was a brief message and we'll speak more when she gets back into town tomorrow - but she professed to love the book and quoted several of her favorite lines from it. She said she hated all the right people and loved all the right people. What a nice Sunday morning message.
-
I have to go as well. I have to go get my eggs for this weeks breakfast (I'm back on my diet) and have few chores to complete as well.
Have a GREAT day everyone!
-
Danise, I think it is outrageous, that in this period when gas prices are going through the roof (if you can afford a roof) that you and your fellow bus riders are going to be denied access to a means of mass transit. Don’t stop with just your county commissioners, contact your Congressional Representatives (they all should have local numbers or e-mails) and tell them that you want something done about this -- NOW. Be firm. Be aggressive. Be angry!
-
Well, I guess that fell on deaf ears (or in this case, eyes). I am all alone in the world!
-
Deaf eyes are sad eyes indeed.
Congrats on the role in ANNIE GET YOUR GUN, TCB!
-
Thanks, Tom.
-
And the word of the day is: TESSITURA!
Scarlett found that her tessitura rose if she tightened her girdle. Ashley got the same results from wearing smaller underpants.
-
MATTH, I wouldn't put much credence in the Higham biography, most of his Nazi accusations have been discredited. And the reason that Flynn's scenes is Gentleman Jim had to filmed in short bursts wasn't because he wasn't much of an athlete, but because he suffered from repeated bouts of malaria, had an irregular heartbeat, and had had tuberculosis. Despite that and whatever dissaption came from his drinking and drugs (and I never saw a man disspate so fast; when he died at fifty, he looked sixty-five), he was through the thirties and forties...a natural athlete, he spent a great deal of time on the water and was one of Hollywood's top-ranked tennis players.
In his films, he was a vigorous, if utterly undisciplined and dangerous fencer. Basil Rathbone was a very good fencer and could have whipped all those who came against him on the screen in real life. The only better Hollywood fencer was Cornel Wilde who had been on the US Olympic fencing team, I believe.
Actually, watching the TCM bio was a rather emotional experience for me; I had utterly forgotten the profound impact Flynn had had on my youth and my own theatrical ambitions. It was also very sad to see how his contradictions and excesses led to self-destructive behaviour that shorten the life and productivity an man of genuine talent and remarkable intelligence.
The clips prove he was a better actor than many gave him credit for. Olivia DeHaviland's remembrances were wonderful and I especially liked her story about her and Bette Davis watching Elizabeth and Essex and Davis recanting all the negative things she said about Flynn at the time...and gushing about how wonderful he was.
Rodzinski there are about a half dozen movies or so that Flynn did that no other actor could have done better, they are...
Captain Blood
Adventures of Robin Hood
The Sea Hawk
Dawn Patrol
Gentleman Jim (a terrific perfomance)
Adventures of Don Juan
They Died With Their Boots On (the history's tosh, but even though they whitewash Custer...Flynn manages to capture the figure's charisma, vanity, ego, and mercurial nature)
Other Flynn films worth a look:
CHARGE OF THE LIGHT BRIGADE
PRINCE & THE PAUPER
DODGE CITY
PRIVATE LIVES OF ELIZABETH & ESSEX
SANTA FE TRAIL
FOOTSTEPS IN THE DARK
THE FORSYTE WOMAN
MASTER OF BALLANTRAE
SUN ALSO RISES
TOO MUCH, TOO SOON (...where he has a few moments that eeriely capture the essence of Barrymore)
-
After a little research, I've revised my list of most-watched stars
They are:
Gary Cooper
Jimmy Stewart
Cary Grant
Errol Flynn
Tyrone Power
John Wayne
Laurence Olivier
Charles Laughton
Ronald Colman
Most-watched females
Katherine Hepburn
Bette Davis
But the list would be revised again, if I included character actors like Basil Rathbone and John Carradine who would place near the top of the list.
-
Did I tell everyone (does everyone even care) that I will be playing Buffalo Bill Cody in ANNIE GET YOUR GUN in June? We start rehearsals next week. Now, if I could only get Brent Barrett to play Frank Butler..........
Congratulations!! Much Leg Breakage (but not literally)!! ;D
And Welcome Back, DR Dan (the Man)!!
-
I'm back from the Estate Sale. I picked up a couple of things, two of which I probably overpaid for because I thought they were more valuable than they probably are. That said, I couldn't find any on eBay, so who knows. But, they're cute and I can give them as gifts or keep them. They are two Disney Company serigraphs, one of Mickey and Minnie, and one of Mickey and Pluto. I have no idea what the run on these are - both have the Disney seal, but neither have their certificates, unless they're on the back under the paper backing of the frame.
The best thing I got was a bronze statue of a girl sitting on a ladder, reading. Very sweet, and I've been looking for a bronze statue and this one was perfect. Given what I've seen these things go for, I think I got a really good deal on it, as it's quite substantial. I'll take a photograph of it now and post it.
-
Girl reading in bronze
-
Just did a bit of nosing around - apparently the list price on these serigraphs is around 450, so I got both for less than that. Interestingly, the ones I got not only have the sericel, they have background plates which are really nice. Don't know if they sell them both ways - the only one I found online didn't have the background plate.
-
I have decided to be lazy today and just watch DVDs, although I may take a crack at a couple of things I'm working on.
-
Congratulations, DR TCB, on getting that part. You should do admirably as Buffalo Bill. I have an audition myself coming up but more about it if and when something positive about it transpires.
-
Charles Pogue wrote:

Hmmm....Davis must have had a change of heart later on in life because, though she thought he was beautiful and right in some of his roles, she did NOT like his work in ELIZABETH AND ESSEX in hindsight. In MOTHER GODDAM, she wrote that she wanted Laurence Olivier and thought Flynn was not up to the challenges of the dialogue.
-
I watched THREE LITTLE WORDS on videotape this afternoon. The new TV upconverts standard video, and I was deathly afraid that was going to mean an artifact filled, unwatchable picture, but though the colors weren't vibrant, it didn't look horrendous for videotape. I was actually pleasantly surprised.
I had forgotten how terrific many of the numbers are in this film, particularly "Thinking of You" which "Dancing in the Dark in THE BAND WAGON was obviously modeled somewhat after. Some of the same steps and movements are right there to see. And, of course, Astaire's partner is the dancer who, in my mind, is his greatest partner after Ginger, Vera-Ellen.
-
"All alone, I'm so all alone. . . . "
-
Then I would suspect Davis' reversal on Flynn's performance came after Mother Goddam but then I'm just taking Olivia's word for it. I personally don't find his performance in it among his best...you can see his discomfort and intimidation with Davis. And I think she was a right royal bitch for treating him badly. If she had been encouraging and helpful, it would not only have helped his performance, but hers...which I find somewhat mannered. Actually, Flynn's temperment was perfect for the vainglorious Essex...just as it was for Custer...and it should have been mined to that effect. He was very good casting for the part, not that Olivier wouldn't have been either.
-
One of Davis' biographers is on a Crawford group I subscribe to and he (she?) was just yesterday discussing Elizabeth and Essex. She (he?) concurred that Davis totally recanted her negative comments about Flynn late in life. I'll go back and see if I saved the post and will copy it here.
-
I'm watching Mr. Glenn Ford in Jubal and eating potato salad.
-
Ah, but what type of potato salad? What kind of dressing on the potato salad would be appropriate while watching Jubal?
-
I just looked up Jubal over at IMDB. Besides the always handsome Glenn Ford, you've got Ernest Borgnine, Rod Steiger, Charles Bronson, Jack Elam, Noah Beery Jr. ... what is this, the ugly cuss contest?
-
DR Jane, bad news about Humbugs. Neither Myers of Keswick or Carry On Tea and Sympathy (the two English stores in the Village) carry Humbugs. Oh, well. They do have many other fun things so we can still stroll over when you are in town.
DR Danise, no you didn't miss anything. I haven't posted any pictures of Hegerty or the other guys in the apartment. I just need to take a picture or two and then download them to the 'puter. T'will be done but I can't say exactly when.
DtM, welcome back. Hope you re-join the early morning denizens.
-
Bruce, that is a lovely bronze. Have you a special spot for it all picked out?
I am doing terribly mundane things today like cleaning some of the junk out of my car, clearing some of the papers from my desk, the ever present laundry and generally trying to prepare for another week.
I'll be back later.
-
I mean, "Laters."
-
Yes, I've always had a place for whatever bronze I found, and there it is resting and looking lovely. In the living room.
Just paid an impromptu visit to my DVD store - again, good timing on my part. Picked up the new Errol Flynn box set, and the new Doris Day box set. Both look gorgeous and are very reasonably priced (more reasonably at this particular store). The Flynn set has five films and a sixth DVD with a documentary, and the Day set has a whopping eight films (only two of which have been released before - The Pajama Game and Calamity Jane).
-
Dear BK: Is this the same edition of Calamity Jane with little more than some premiere and awards newsreals for the special features? If so, der B and I picked it up recently in a three-pack, along with The Unsinkable Molly Brown and Annie Get Your Gun.
Well, it might be worth handing over CJ to someone else. What else is in the Doris Day set?
(I love The Pajama Game. I also enjoy the I-Forgot-My-Pajamas Game, but that's not on DVD that I know of.)
-

Yeah, well, I just pulled a hundred feet of wire through a hole in the wall. I'm not quite sure why, but my brother was in the attic, lowering the wire down the wall and he told me to grab a hold of it and pull it through the hole. When a voice coming from the ceiling tells you to do something, you do it.
-
Ten deer just passed through the property next to ours, and then crossed the road.
Gosh and golly, I love not living in the city! :D
-
First one back from Mamma Mia! We had a great time and look for the pictures from DR Ginny when she and DH Richard get back. Now I'm off to Muncie, hopefully I can nap on my way back up to school..
-
BK, what is a serigraph? Potato salad and Jubal sounds like an afternoon well-spent to me.
I've just been for a walk and saw the famous Lloyd Wright (son, not dad) house around the corner that Ramon Navarro once lived in (not the one he was brutally murdered in). In later years, Diane Keaton lived in it. I'm not thrilled with her additions to it.
-
A serigraph is some sort of variation on a lithograph - they produce a certain number of plates from a master then destroy (presumably) the master.
The Day set includes The Pajama Game (much nicer packaging), Calamity Jane (no additional material), Please Don't Eat the Daisies, The Glass Bottom Boat, Love Me or Leave Me, Jumbo, Lullaby of Broadway, and Young Man with a Horn. I'm especially looking forward to Jumbo and Love Me or Leave Me.
The Flynn set has Captain Blood, Elizabeth and Essex, The Sea Hawk, They Died with Their Boots On, Dodge City, and the separated disc The Adventures of Errol Flynn.
-
Good Afternoon!
...Half hour, the Call is half hour!...
What a wonderful matinee!!
Such a pleasure to meet to DR Joey and DR Jrand and to re-meet DR Ginny and her DH Richard! I'm sure it was their good energy and sense of fun that energized the rest of the audience in Clowes this afternoon!
And, yes, pictures were taken. I snapped a few with my disposable, and DR Ginny's husband graciously snapped a couple of photos of the group - both in and out of their "proper attire". -That will make sense once the pics are posted. -Remember my "party favors"... ;)
We ate dinner at the student union between shows. Very good - and a big Thank You to DR Jrand for loaning me a few dollars so that I could have dinner. -The "dangers" of living with a debit card - and forgetting to get to an ATM earlier today. In any case...
I'm about to get ready for my final Mamma Mia! for this time round. A bit sad, but I know I'll see them again in a few weeks in Richmond. And having a gathering of Hainsies/Kimlets today made today all the more special.
Laters...
-
HHmm... and I just posted that from the pit... We're about 10 minutes from curtain....
Hmmm.. I get a good signal in the pit... Hmm...
;)
Laters...

And of course Love Me or Leave Me was Percy Faith's only Oscar nomination.
-
Charles I wasn’t sure if I should RACHEL AND THE STRANGER so I did a little on-line research and found it under Westerns. :-\
Our mutual friend is breaking ground on her new house Monday. I’m almost as excited as she is.
-
A little perspective on Bette Davis' comments on Errol Flynn in Mother Goddam. The book came out in '74. She didn't died until '89. Fifteen years for her to recant her opinions of him in E&E. I don't know when Olivia and she watched the film.
-
SWW I hope you are you feeling better now.
Elmore GOOD VIBES FOR TOMORRW!
Dan (the Man) WELCOME BACK!!
-
Bruce, cute statue and congrats on your other purchases.
We have a serigraph we purchased over a similar lithograph as the colors were more vibrant. A serigraph is a print created utilizing a silkscreen process.
-
TCB congratulations on your new role. I wish I could travel in June.
Matt H, GOOD VIBES on your upcoming audition!
Ben, thanks for checking on the humbugs. I’m sure I will enjoy the stores humbugs or not. :)
-
Mamma Mia! Here I go again...my my....
What a wonderful afternoon of fun. I enjoyed the show VERY much - the music was tremendous...and the singers could SING and ACT. The costumes were outstanding. And if I do say so myself, there was not a Sow's Ear in the cast. The women were stunningly beautiful....jaw dropping....double take gorgeous. And the guys were certainly worth a second glance as well.
No American Idol losers, rejects, or wannabes in this cast!
Of course meeting DRJOSE, DR GINNY and DH RICHARD, and DRJOEY was quite entertaining.
Yes the Indiana Local Wigwam of the Hee-a-watha was convened. Many things were discussed, names were dropped, secrets were revealed, and laughs were plenty. Photos from DR GINNY's DH RICHARD will be forthcoming. And DR JOSE took some photos as well with his shoebox camera.
DRJOEY is v e r y TALL! He is a pleasant fellow with good manners who will go far. DRGINNY is very funny and a great conversationalist, DH RICHARD is a gentleman who is also very good with a quip or story. Of course DRJOSE and I would barely let the others get in a word with a shoehorn, but then that's just the Virgo in us. In fact we two August 26th Virgos were waiting in the lobby for the others at 12:30. I had been sitting under a rather abstract painting drawing attention to myself, when I saw the person who I decided must BE DRJOSE walk by. I followed him for a bit and then said: "Jose!" He turned around and we met face to face for the first time.
Then my brother in law's brother and his wife walked by and I scared them as well.
I will leave other tidbits of the day for others to tell. Suffice to say that DRGINNY was elected President of the O-Hee-o Wigwam, DR JOEY will represent the Northern Indiana Wigwam, and I am representative at-large. DR JOSE was elected Emeritus and DR RICHARD was selected as official photographer and recording secretary.
-
DRTCB - I played Pawnee Bill in a production of ANNIE GET YOUR GUN. And at my first rehearsal - since I come in on I think Page 55 - I just said to the director: "Isn't this rather late in the piece to be introducing a major character?" He said: just say the lines and be quiet.
-
Good audition vibes to DR MATTH.
Errol Flynn - yes the Olivia comments make the documentary for me, although it's nice to see that Patrice Wymore hasn't gone the plastic surgery route. Errol Flynn movies were a favorite on my television when I was growing up. Frances Farmer used to show his films frequently, although I don't remember any specific comment she ever made about him. He was just SO handsome. One of his comedies NEVER SAY GOODBYE with Eleanor Parker has dialog and situations that still make me laugh.
-
A BIG thanks to DRJOSE for the special "gift bags" we each received. It was a very thoughtful gift.
THANKS!
-
So glad you went to the estate sale, MR BK. That is indeed a lovely bronze figure!
DR CP - I know what you mean, for me Robin Hood will always be Errol Flynn. I had seen it a couple of times in b/w and when it was first broadcast in color late one Saturday night - well it was another whole different ball game. I enjoyed Tyrone Power's fencing with Basil Rathbone in MARK OF ZORRO, but Rathbone's sword fight with Flynn in ROBIN HOOD is so full of emotion - the whole film leads us right to this confrontation - the music, the color, the costumes - whew! Now I want to watch it again, right now.
-
And of course there was the planned but unmade sequel to one of Doris's hit movies:
Love Me or Lease Me
-
JRand how fun to read your descriptions of today’s gathering. So what was in the gift bags we have heard so much about?
-
I am very excited. My engineer dropped by the CD of Unreleased Aqabala that had the digital quirk in it. Not only is that fixed, both songs have been completely remastered and sound more gorgeous than ever. So those of you who asked for CDs will be getting a special treat. I am burning copies as I type, so it's not too late to get yours. I think I'm about out of the "official" Aqabala release, but I may have a few more lying about in various nooks and crannies.
Speaking of which, does anyone remember the book/movie Every Little Crook and Nanny?
-
I remember reading an interview with Dean Stockwell once where he enthused over getting to hang out with Errol Flynn when they shot a movie together when Stockwell was a kid. He said Flynn was one of the only adults who spoke to him man to man. And they hung out in Flynn's trailer, with Flynn giving him advice on the business.
Today I watched a good deal of the Doris Day-James Garner film THE THRILL OF IT ALL, which is a pretty funny affair. Gretl from SOUND OF MUSIC is one of Day's younguns.
Good dialogue:
Doris (to TV execs while watching TV play unfold): "Isn't this the same script as last week, but with Nazis instead?"
TV Exec: "Our audience will never be able to pick up on such subtleties."
Cut to Doris's Kids watching at home: "Hey, this is the same show as last week with different costumes!"
-
Oops, guess I should include my email:
jmkauffman@aol.com
And, yes, I know that Stephen Foster did NOT write "Aura Lee". :) :) :)
-
I don't remember the movie.
Is the Unreleased Aqabala different from Shades of Light?
-
Nobody doesn't like Aura Lee!
-
I don't remember the movie.
Is the Unreleased Aqabala different from Shades of Light?
Yes, Jane, it's different--and I think you especially would love one of the tunes on it--it's Hannah Senesh's gorgeous "Eli, Eli," combined with a little chant of mine, The CD also includes Wayne Shorter's classic "Speak No Evil," with a new lyric by me and the instrumental I mentioned here a few weeks ago when our esteemed BK tried to usurp my brilliant pun--"Brother, Can You Spare A Paradigm?" Email me your address and I'll mail you one.
-
Nobody doesn't like Aura Lee!
Except for the wacko who emailed me yesterday (see yesterday's notes). I looked her (him?) up today on Google. The guy's name who signed the email is a Minister in La Jolla. Wonder if he knows his wife is a closet Scientologist. ;D
-
Watching Jumbo.
Is this a slow news day here at haineshisway.com?
AORTA! Oh, that was yesterday.
I can't even remember today's word because NO ONE HAS USED IT! Oh, yes, TESSITURA (ARUTISSET spelled backwards).
-
Well, TESSITURA caused someone to say MAZEPPA, which made me think of MOZAREPPA, which is the name of these things they sell at street fairs here. Two sweet cornmeal flapjacks sandwiched around a piece of mozarella cheese. So at the store today, I found a box of frozen mozareppas. And that'w why I can blame this site for ruining my diet.
-
By far the actor I have watched the most is Humphrey Bogart;
Others that top the list are:
Ginger Rodgers
Myrna Loy
Audrey Hepburn
Jimmy Stewart
Cary Grant
Dan (the Man) while thinking about my choices I began wondering what character actors should be included. Henry Jones was the first that came to my mind.
Keith looked at my list and asked where the newer actors are and what about TV shows we have watched over and over again. I’m not even going there. ::)
-
I'm back in good old Muncie. On the way up, I was quite tired and had to stop off at a gas station for a power nap. (Better safe than sorry.) Twenty minutes later I was back on the road and refreshed enough to make it up here though tonight is most definitely an early bedtime for me. We'll save the contents of the gift bag until we get the pictures loaded...:) It's much more fun that way!
-
Yes, the Ohio contingent is back from Indianapolis and I must confirm what Jose, JRand, and Joey have already posted. It was fun, fun, fun (as Eloise would say). Here's the first photo, from L to R: Joey, JRand, Ginny, Jose:
-
Here's the second photo, with gift-bag evidence. In addition to Mamma Mia program books and coffee mugs, the guys got baseball caps and I got an apron. Thank you so much, Jose! And thank you, too, to JRand for the Annette CD - I had no idea she'd recorded so many songs.
-
Last photo, taken outside the Butler University student union, at the conclusion of a sparkling visit. RE the buildings at Butler, DH Richard observed that the older ones are made of Indiana limestone (beautiful) trimmed in concrete and the newer ones are made of concrete trimmed in limestone.
-
Wow! Great shots, DR Ginny!
What a great time you all must have had. I want to hear all the menu choices, the impressions of the show, the gossip, the travel. Now that everyone appears to be home safe, this old whore's going to bed.
Night, all!
-
DR Elmore, thanks for waiting up for us! And best vibes for whatever tomorrow brings :-*
-
DR TCB - congratulations on your role in Annie Get Your Gun.
Bruce, as a collector of images of Reading Women, I love the statue.
-
I'm very curious about the ads that seem to know what we're talking about and change according to our topic. Therefore, I propose we spend the next several posts discussing:
[move=left,scroll,6,transparent,100%]albino hermaphrodites[/move]
And see what the ad gods bring us!!!
-
Albino hermaphrodites??
-
Why would you want to discuss albino hermaphrodites? (Is it working yet??)
-
Has anyone ever met an albino?
-
What about a hermaphrodite?
-
LOL. :) Well there was a picture of a guy who at least looked a bit hermaphroditic, but he went away when I refreshed the page. ;)
-
There's a line in Eating Raoul: The Musical that Mary asks Paul: "Paul, what's a hermaphrodite?"
-
I don't know if the line "Paul, what's a hermaphrodite?" is in the movie.
-
Now it says I can "find anyone." I wonder if that includes albino hermaphrodites.
-
Either way, I don't they talk about ALBINOS! (Anything up there?? ;D )
-
I just see ads for web hosting. Darn.
-
I believe we have confounded Ads by Google. Yes, confounded them mightily. :)
-
Joey I’m so happy you arrived home safely-a power nap was a clever thing to do.
Ginny thanks for the great photos and please thank DH for taking them.
JRand it is always good to see the real you. :)
-
Ginny thanks for the great photos and please thank DH for taking them.
Yes, those were delightful pictures!! ;D
-
Well, earlier today, I first listened to Donald's radio show "JACKIE HOFFMAN and other Funny Ladies." It was quite funny.
After that, I went to my sister's (next door) and helped her move things in her garage. Her daughter (my niece) is learning how to drive and, well, she (my niece) drove into the garage...when the garage door was closed. :o The bottom two panels (they run sideways) are munched in on the left side of the door. We had to get things out of the way so that it could be repaired (replaced?) sometime this week. My mother was teaching my niece to drive and neither she nor my sister got too upset. I was surprised when I heard that. Both of them can be high-strung.
-
George-LOL. How is your niece?
-
In about 20 minutes, "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" will be on, then I'll watch "Desperate Housewives" and finally, "Grey's Anatomy" (which is set and bits filmed in Seattle). My niece said that "Boston Legal" won't be back until the fall and that "Grey's Anatomy" will finish out the season! :o That's not fair! Why can't both be on?? I mean, I like "Grey's Anatomy," but I really like "Boston Legal." Darn.
-
George-LOL. How is your niece?
She will turn 21 on April 17th. She just never felt the urge to learn how to drive until now...finally!
-
Guess she didn't feel the need to drive before now. Has she lost interest after this incident?
I will read your response tomorrow-'night.
-
Not really...at least it wasn't an accident out on the open road at 70 mph!
-
Well, I'm off! "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" is about to start! As Jose says, "Laters!"
-
Good Evening!
Wow! I didn't realize I was wearing a moiré patterned shirt. ;)
It really was a wonderful get together.
So, now I just need to make it up to the Pacific Northwest, Paris, and Japan, and "Jose's HHW World Tour" will be complete!
-
Okay, in honor of the East Coast gathering, the cyberkids and I met for dinner tonight to celebrate their first (of many) paychecks. We went Mexican. Ann had the tostada and enchilladas' and Jed and I each had one of the biggest damn burritos I had ever seen.
-
Great photo with the kids TCB.
Hope to meet you all in 2006 - ICE-CREAM tour.
-
Thanks for the good thoughts about the audition. I'll let you folks know something when I know something.
-
Nice picture of DRs Jed and Ann. Thanks for sharing it with us.

Hmmm.... Must be in the air... A bunch of the crew guys went to some Mexican place between shows today. They said the food was very good, and very generous portions. One of them commented that it was a "burrito as big as your brain".
:P
-
I just spent six hours in a board meeting. That's all I have to say today.
-
Excellent pictures all!
-
Hmmm.... I should be packing....
But first, I think some ice cream. (per the "suggestion" of DR Tomovoz.)
-
Charles Pogue, I misunderstood what you wrote as to when Davis and DeHavilland were discussing Flynn's performance. I thought you meant they were watching dailies when Davis made that statement which is why I worded my comment as I did.
It wouldn't surprise me if she changed her mind about his work, especially after she suffered that stroke and seemed a bit mellower about her old co-stars (except for Joan Crawford, Karen Black, and Faye Dunaway: she never had anything nice to say about any of them.)
-
Guess I'll be headed for bed now. It's been a long day ( a HOW TO SUCCEED reference.)
-
Bette liked to played the grand actress a little too much. Many she would have gotten along better with her co-stars, if she had given them some credit for maybe knowing as much as she did or some things she didn't.
-
Time for bed! Once again thanks to everyone who came today and especially to Jose for the ticket and goodies. (And thanks to JRand for the Annette cd!) It was a great way to spend the afternoon. I wasn't sure what to expect but everyone was easy-going and laid back so I felt right at home. If I got a dollar for everytime JRand told a "before Joey was born" story I'd have enough money to go buy some ice cream! I actually stopped off at the local ice cream place before I came back up to Muncie and ordered a large milkshake. I forgot that a large was a 44 ounce cup! It took me the entire hour and a half up to finish it, but I did! ;D <----What my mouth will look like after tomorrow afternoon! :D I'll make my roomate take pictures so I can post them tomorrow.
-
DR Joey - What will be the first food you eat tomorrow "after"?
;D
-
OK - I'm gonna start packing...
Laters...
-
Now I want ice cream.
I'm really sorry I missed the conversation about albino hermaphrodites.
-
I haven't decided yet though a candied apple would be good even though it is out of season. Hmmm decisions, decisions... Alright I really must head to bed now. Goodnight! I am sure I will dream of brightly colored spandex outfits as the songs from the show have been running through my head non-stop. :-)
-

Not quite right. Boston Legal actually returns in two weeks to finish up the last few weeks of the season. I need my Denny Crane fix.
-
Great photo with the kids TCB.
Hope to meet you all in 2006 - ICE-CREAM tour.
We can hardly wait!!!
Dinner was delightful as always. And good golly that burrito was big!
Of course, I've already congratulated TCB in person on his Annie Get Your Gun casting. I look forward to when I'm able to share similar news again...
-
Thanks for the good thoughts about the audition. I'll let you folks know something when I know something.
But, when Matt, when???
-
TESSITURA, baby, TESSITURA!
-
Good evening all! I have returned from my Seattle trip and have caught up on all the HHW goings on from the last 3 days and now I am exhausted!
Loved the photos of the Indiana gathering! What a lovely bunch of people!!
-
Seattle was a ton of fun! We stayed at my buddy Mark's boyfriend James' apartment which is up in the capitol hill area. James has two beautiful cats...Fat Kitty and Black Kitty! LOL!
We walked all over downtown Seattle and around capitol hill...down to Pike's market, over to the International district, up to the water tower and the park. Went to a wonderful, and very fancy dinner party at James' friends home which was a 40 minute drive north of Seattle...so much food and wine!
And who knew there were so many Arabian/Egyptian stores in Seattle...I went to 3 of them...bought some CDs and an Egyptiam movie from the 1947s called THE GENIE LADY...a fun looking musical.
I am exhausted and glad to be home, however. I took my camera but kept forgetting to snap photos. I did take a few while we were at the Timberline bar on Friday night. I will post some tomorrow.
-
Good Evening!
Well, I am Ti-red! Whew!
All my clothes are packed, and I just have to pack my carry-on in the morning. Thankfully, my flight doesn't get depart until 1:30, so I can sort of sleep in tomorrow morning. The trade-off, however, is that I will hit the Capitol Beltway at the peak of rush hour. Ah, well.... Hmm.. I guess I could make a stop to get my hair cut - I'm a few days overdue.
I'm thinking I'll stay at my folks place in Fairfax tomorrow night, and then head back to Richmond Tuesday morning. We'll see...
I'm actually not looking forward to heading back to Richmond - well, to my apartment at least. Kind of sad, actually. I called my roomie today and informed him of my itinerary. If he at least cleaned the bathroom sometime over the past five weeks, I should be happy. But, again, we'll see.
*As someone pointed out to me, I've already psychologically moved out and moved on, so... I just need to breathe and not get stressed out about things. Especially when the "things" I've been stressing about have not been unexpected.
Thanks again to Joey, Jack, Ginny and Richard for making the trip to Clowes Memorial Hall today. It was great meeting all of you. Where else but on HHW would people come to see a show where the person they "know" is not even on stage or in sight, just heard. I truly feel honored. *And now you have an extra Angel Pin to pass on to someone else. ;)
Goodnight.
-
DRGINNY & DH RICHARD - thanks for the photos! I just realized that JOSE and JOEY (soon to have braces removed) are colored coordinated in blue, and GINNY & I are in lovely earth tones.
Glad you enjoyed the Annette CD's - all of the songs recorded, of course, BEFORE JOEY WAS BORN - there's another dollar for you, DR JOEY.
And now everyone at HHW can understand why I use Miss Frances Farmer as my avatar - TOO MUCH SKIN ON THE SKULL. I will say I am on a lovely diet so that by mid-summer there will be less of me to see...not more hair, mind you, but less of me.
-
Lovely photo of DRs ANN & JED - and DRTCB next time ask the waiter to snap the photo so you can be included!
DRGEORGE - I love to listen to the EATING RAOUL cd! It is all funny, but my favorite song is "Mary" sung by Paul Bland.
-
DRLAURA - I hope you were NOT the one who had to take the minutes of the 5-hour meeting!
-
DRGEORGE - I love to listen to the EATING RAOUL cd! It is all funny, but my favorite song is "Mary" sung by Paul Bland.
I like it too, but "Hot Monkey Love" is the best title! ;) I also love the songs "A Thought Occurs," "Think About Tomorrow" and "One Last Bop."
-
One Last Bop - LOL....of course me being ME - I would love to choreograph a production of the show! It's already done! I just need someone to produce the show!
-
We mentioned Tessitura a few times earlier today, MR BK.
But I am tempted to use it again, so I will.
Tessie (and friends) have some of the funniest lines in the show:
"I don't do scenes, so ba-low!"
"Maybe dere's sumpin wrong wit chur bumpa!"
"I didn't know we'd be sharing it with a group from the Virgin Islands!"
-
Tessitura - is this some type of Italian vacation plan?
-
DR MBARNUM - what with the geography in Seattle, I would think that a walk around town would really be a WALK!!
-
Bedtime for me as well! And yes the songs from MAMMA MIA! are running through my head.
It is a show that absolutely should NOT work, and yet it does! The powerhouse cast we saw certainly had a LOT to do with that. The story has just enough weight to it, and the songs are listed in alphabetical NOT run order, so that they hit you by surprise!
Title song is great, "Does Your Mother Know?" is a lot of fun - but the funniest intro and staging goes to "Take A Chance on Me!" LOL....
-
When my sister and her friends took their "we're all 40 and we're going to celebrate in Vegas" trip with her friends who all turned 40, my sister and one other of the group saw the Vegas production of Mamma Mia. They both loved it! They knew it was fairly mindless entertainment, but they were entertained. ;D
