Title: THE DANCE CARD
Post by: bk on April 10, 2005, 11:57:56 PM
Well, you've read the notes, you ready the notes quite quickly, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home, although that won't be any time soon, as their dance cards are quite full.

Speaking of Dancing Cows, the library where I work purchased the book Philadelphia Chickens (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0001ADB6Y/qid=1113203522/sr=8-3/ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i3_xgl15/002-0523980-6500818?v=glance&s=music&n=507846), written by Sandra Boynton.  It has a CD with songs performed by such performers as Meryl Streep, The Bacon Brothers, Laura Linney, Kevin Kline and Scott Bakula.  Anyway, one of the songs is called "Cows."  Well, several women in our Central Reference Department fell in love with the book and put together a dance routine to the "Cows" song!  They made cow tuxedos (with spotted top hats and cow tails, even!) and performed it for a couple of retirement celebrations, as well as our library's All Staff Day!  It was quite (there's that word, yet again ;)) a hit! ;D

I've been working on this homework long enough, and I'm calling it finished. It's this assignment we get every week: a 250-word response to the week's reading. I'm getting really tired of these. I've been working myself stupid over these weekly responses, and come to find out the girl who sits next to me in class has been lifting all hers from Cliffs Note-type websites. That takes guts because I would NOT want this teacher to be mad at me.

In those less sophisticated days of childhood when options were rather limited, I also had a liking for blancmange. Todays' task for DR Joey - investigate the availablity of blancmange and also junket tablets.
I hope by now that DR Joey knows all the lyrics for "Pineapple Princess".

Good morning, all!  I was wide awake at 5:55, so I forced myself to leave the security of my bed to face the surgeon this morning.  I have to catch the bus to 59th Street between 8-8:15.  When I'm back, I'll post whatever did or did not occur.

Bric-a-brac?  Isn't that French for tchotchke?  I have lots of paper items, books and music, but few pieces of bric-a-brac, my favorite being my Disney Alice in Wonderland cookie jar.  One of my landladies in college had a house filled with DaVinci Last Supper bric-a-brac: paint-by-number, velvet painting, plaques, mugs, ashtrays, cushions, etc.  Paying the rent was like a bad church service.

Dish du jour, or TOD:  my passive-aggressive mother was a wonderful cook when she could get it together.  After 1961, she couldn't get it together too often or too well so things went downhill mentally, socially, and domestically:  she discovered prefab food and our dining habits went to hell.  By 1965, I don't think she did more than stock the refrigerator with frozen items.

However, when she was on, there was no one better:  apple pie, doughnuts, popcorn balls, pineapple upside-down cake, stuffed green peppers, baked ham, and the best pecan pie I've ever had, primarily because my mother's flare for turning flour, crisco, water and sugar into piecrust was a God-given talent that few possess.

Good morning, DRHisaka!

And now DRTomovoz has shown up!  Hello, dear friend.

My mother was not the best of all cooks, but she did some things rather well.  She was particularly good at whipping up cakes from scratch.   It may surprise you to know that cake is one of my favorite food groups, so I didn't mind that other foods were less within her grasp.

She made Swiss steak very well.  I've come across several versions of Swiss steak over the years-- all different,  Some with tomato sauce, some without.  I guess hers was not really Swiss steak, but it was good.  It involved  beating the steak silly.  And silly steak is something to behold. There was a special plate that she'd use the edge of to accomplish this.  Almost everyone I've met (of a certain age) remembers a plate like that that there mothers and/or grandmothers would use.
I was always fond of our family's version of "goulash."

In recent decades she became adept at Chinese cooking.  Her Lemon Chicken is some of the best I've had.

Meals My Mother Made Me:

Eggs, sunnyside up
French Toast
Ham and cheese sandwiches, mustard and mayo, with the crust cut off
Home Fries
Cream Puffs (these were more fun to make than to eat)

Has anyone ever seen a motion pictured entitled I Know Where I'm Going starring Wendy Hiller?  It's being featured at this week's Philadelphia Film Festival and got quite a write-up in the Philadelphia Inquirer as a great undiscovered movie classic.  I'm curious to see it, and as it's available on DVD from Criterion and rather pricey at that, it would probably be more economic to see it at the festival screening.  Is it really on the level of The Quiet Man or Local Heroes, as the newspaper article exclaimed?

Post by: Ben on April 11, 2005, 06:14:32 AM
Never heard of I Know Where I'm Going. Althought this is not necessarily the best endorsement, someone at IMDB (Internet Movie Database) says "There's not much to say about this film, apart from the fact that it's gorgeous and irrestistable."

I always liked my mother's spaghetti sauce.

We are having "database" problems. Seems they changed the firewall over the weekend and now it's doing the job too well. We can't get into programs we should be able to open. Oh, well. I'll just surf the Web until I'm caught or until something happens otherwise.

Last night, DR Jed wrote: "Not quite right.  Boston Legal actually returns in two weeks to finish up the last few weeks of the season.  I need my Denny Crane fix."

Sorry to disagree, but DR George was right when he said BOSTON LEGAL would not be returning this season. ABC has decided to stick with GREY'S ANATOMY in that time slot for the rest of the season and hold over the last five new episodes of BOSTON LEGAL from this season until next fall. They have promised BOSTON LEGAL will get a 27 episode season next year.

If the ratings continue to be high with GREY'S ANATOMY at 10 p.m. on Sunday, expect to see BOSTON LEGAL slide to either Tuesday at 10 or Wednesday at 10 next season. Both of the shows in those time slots are in trouble and probably won't be returning next year (which I hate because I think Tim Daly's new show EYES is excellent).

And I'm back!  The examination was uncomfortable, awkward, and gross.  The surgery is scheduled for Tuesday May 17, and it sounds unpleasant as hell.  My surgeon, Dr Mitchell Bernstein, is a handsome young man, but he's wearing a ring so I don't think I'll try to match him up with anyone.  Sorry!

This gives me a month and two weks to finish up all the work on my desk and prepare for several weeks of recovery.

I meant to mention earlier what a wonderful photo of Ann and Jed DRTCB posted last night, and how much I enjoyed seeing the Indianapolis delegation in full color.  Or did I and I already forgot?  DRGinny's DHRichard was my best friend through junior high and high school, and it would have been nice to see if he's ageing as well as DRGinny and evergreen moi are!

I Know Where I'm Going is film perfection.  It's an early Powell/Pressburger (Red Shoes, Black Narcissus).  Great, character-driven story and scenery to die for.

Good surgery vibes for Elmore.

George, we have one of those Boynton book/CDs that my kids adore.  I think it has a Rhino on the cover--I'll check and post the title later.

I have not caught up.  We were out at the ICON at StonyBrook University, where in the past we have been privileged to meet with DR CP's cl;ose and personla friend Harlan Ellison (alas not this year) although we did meet with Ben Bova and Jack McDevitt  amongst other and sun dried autors, media guests, scientist types. etc etc

We did cut short our Saturday festivities though when  I received a call on my cellphone from my good and dear neighbor, Mike, to inform us that there was a BMW SUV sitting in our front lawn, having first knocked down our telephone pole, torn through our chain link fence  and ending up in the trunk of our maple tree.

So went home and met the dad of the 18 year old driver of the 2005 BMW SUV ( daddy had pulled up in his corvette)  he apologized for the inconvenience that had been caused and promised to make things right.  We inqyuired as to whether his son was in the hospital and he said that oh no, sonny was sitting in  daddy's car, where he was to stay incommunicato the entire time.

We still have no phone service and of course (since we use dial up) no internet service.

Can't think of a  "mommy meal" at the moment

laters!!

DR Jed, here is the news blurb from USA TODAY about GREY'S ANTOMY and BOSTON LEGAL:

'Grey's Anatomy' makes the cut

ABC's medical drama Grey's Anatomy has extended its residency on Sundays (10 p.m. ET/PT) and will air through the end of the season in May. Boston Legal, which was scheduled to return April 24, instead will return next season with 27 episodes, including five that were to air this season. Since its March 27 debut, Grey's has improved upon Legal's ratings, drawing an average of 17 million viewers compared with 12.5 million for Legal.

I can hardly wait to get the new Doris Day boxed set on DVD. JUMBO has always been a favorite with that superb score sung by all of them to a fare-thee-well. James Joyce (not the author) did the dubbing for Stephen Boyd.

My mother was a superb country cook. She made the best fried chicken I've ever tasted (one reason why fried chicken remains my favorite dish), and could do wonders with standard things like meat loaf and beef stew.

When I graduated from college, I moved back home to start teaching and work on my master's degree. She had mastered what became my favorite "new" dish that she could cook - turkey tetrazinni. I used to BEG her to make it, and I would honestly have two meals of it every time she fixed it: the usual supper with mom and dad and then two hours later, a salad plate full of it.

I've said this before here, but she also made the best cocoanut cake I've ever had, too.

Charles Pogue, I agree with you about Bette Davis' ego. It knew NO bounds and caused considerable consternation on almost every set even in her later years. She vexed veterans Helen Hayes and Lillian Gish terribly on MURDER WITH MIRRORS and THE WHALES OF AUGUST. She seems to have been jealous of anyone who she perceived could match her in fame or talent and became literally a bitch to work with. I can admire many of her performances, but I'm glad I wasn't on the receiving end of her barbs and ill-treatment.

Good Morning!

DR elmore - Continued Good Health Vibes to you.

DR vixmom - I'm looking forward to the continuation of your story... Even though you may not be... ;)  Just glad to know that no one was hurt.

As for favorite growing-up meals...  I'd have to say breakfast - scrambled eggs, bacon and toast.   Lots of toast - Wonder Bread preferably.  My brothers and I could easily go through a loaf or two on a Saturday morning.  And pancake mornings were also highly anticipated - Bisquick, of course!

As for a meal-meal, most probably meatloaf.  And I believe meatloaf was one of the first "hot foods" I learned to cook.

That Doris Day set is priced so attractively at some leading on-line retailers that the set can be had for less than $8 a film. And the nice part is that there isn't a bad movie in the bunch, and many show Doris at her very best (LOVE ME OR LEAVE ME, CALAMITY JANE, THE PAJAMA GAME). She also used to make a pretty good pork b-b-q and really good home-made pizza.  Junket was another of my favourites she made and little tiny cinnamon roll-ups for breakfast.

Did anyone see the new TRADING SPACES on Saturday (the one without Paige Davis)?  It was very bizarre.  To me Paige really made the show.  And now they have 2 designers AND 2 carpenters.  And the people who are Trading Spaces have much more responsibility.  They have to run down the street to arrive at their house ALONE. And they have to walk into their own house at the end ALONE.

It was very weird having them walk into their houses and have to wander around trying to figure out which room was redone. Then they had to figure out what was done (Paige used to guide them).

It was very bizarre.  I was told one reason they wanted to change the format was to be able to trade spaces with people in different cities (they didn't do that in this case).

Does anyone know if Paige was actually fired or if she was happy to move on?  I'd be interested to hear more of the real story.

I am now listening to a Japanese CD that I picked up in Seattle...it is called BEST 30 '63...it is a compilation of top Japanese pop hits of 1963...there were one for 1960 through at least 1969..but at $30 a pop I only bought the one from my birth year! Right now a Japanese duo is singing their version of the song HEY PAULA! LOL!

I also picked up a double CD set of Kyu Sakamoto's singles.

My only complaint about these packages is the flimsy slipcases they come in.  But I suppose that that helps keep the overall costs down, so I won't gripe too loudly about it.

Having our own outdoor Shakespeare Theater here in Ashland my book discussion group is reading Hamlet’s Dresser, a memoir by Bob Smith.   I think this is a book most of you will appreciate very mucy.

“Growing up in Stratford, CT, Bob Smith's life was hard and made harder by the difficulties of his profoundly retarded sister, his overwrought mother and harsh father, but found a window into a new world through Shakespeare.  When he was 16, the Stratford Shakespeare Theater, with its many celebrity actors, moved into town and Bob became its biggest fan - and Hamlet's Dresser.  At the age of 19, he joined the troupe and traveled the country.  Bob ultimately became an authority on Shakespeare, teaching Shakespeare in several venues and, in particular, to seniors.”

I started a post about an hour ago, but got sidetracked and lost it.

DR/Dear Brother Jay has gotten a job!  It is, I believe, a newly created position with the Jewish Volunteer Services of LA.  They are starting a Career Placement division, and Jay will be heading it.

Unfortunately, I am sketchy on the details, as he left me a message before heading off on his "last hurrah" this past week, and our parents weren't terribly well-versed in the details either.

Happy news indeed!  (A DR George/SWEENEY TODD reference)

IN the meanwhile, we saw our final Stars of Tomorrrow shows of the year (a BIRDIE and a MAME) over the weekend.  Now I just have to finish writing some of my adjudications.  We also got to see the tour of CHICAGO, featuring -- ready for this, DR Jennifer? -- Paige Davis.  She acquitted herself well, though she did not leap into the pantheon of  favorite Roxies. (I have seen this production, in NY and on tour, far more than I care to admit!)  The Velma, however, was a Canadienne named Terra MacLeod, and she was sensational!  Carol Woods blew the roof off the house as Mama Morton.  The Billy was only so-so.

That's what's going on.

This kid was driving a car that probably cost more than my house! I suspect manual labor is not in his repitore  :DI have already received  phone call from his  dad's insurance company promising to get an adjuster out right away to acess the damage and they said they woud have him call me to arranege an appointment do I could be there to point out anything he might miss!  :D

We like having the fence there to keep the pooping doggies out of the yard as well the odd SUV  that might leap the curb   :D

This is actually the 2nd time this has happened to this stretch of fence in the past ten years, and the neighbor directly across the street had the same problem twice in the past  five years!!

Its a 30 MPH stretch of road, but the long st4ecth with no stop signs seems to motivate SUV drivers to go 300 MPH instead!! (all four incidents have been SUV drivers, so I am NOT picking on all SUV drivers in general dear dear Danise!!)

Matt H I’m finding Tim Daly’s performance in EYES delightful but I’m not sure if I like the show.

Has anyone else been watching HOUSE and NUMBE3S?  I’m enjoying both shoes very much.

I like EYES much more than NUMBERS (which I'd like better if they got rid of Judd Hirsch). There aren't many shows on right now that I like more than HOUSE with that mesmerizing performance by Hugh Laurie and the truly intriguing cases they've come up with.

Whew!  Is Comcast irritating or WHAT?  I have been without internet since early this morning.  A service call brought me an appointment for Wednesday morning!  So I just waited.  Then about 15 minutes ago, the technician called and said there had been a problem in my area and it might be fixed now....and it is so far.  The service call has been cancelled and, I am crossing my fingers that things are all right.

Thanks to VixMom and Jane - I will think about changing my avatar when I get a good picture of myself...LOL....

DRMBARNUM I got a nice package in the mail today so I will be watching some interesting motion pictures this evening.  Thanks so much!

DR CP - what is junket?

My favorite childhood meal - usually on Tuesdays - was meatloaf.  MMMMM....always with mashed potatoes and green beans.  Some thin brown gravy - I don't like thick or lumpy gravy.  And a German Chocolate cake for dessert.   The icing was made with walnuts from our own tree that we picked up from the ground and shelled ourselves...mmmmmmmm.

LOL, intriguing & mesmerizing yes, but so many holes in the medical information.  We find enough errors but my brother the doctor, a fan of Hugh Laurie’s, finds even more. ;D

I know Judd Hirsch doesn’t have much of a role in Numbe3s but I still like him.  I like the rest of the cast (Keith isn't too sure about the brother).  It’s nice to see the gal from SLIDERS again and looking so good.

I hope the scripts for EYES improve.  We still have it set to record.

Well, that makes horse races because I think the scripts for EYES have been wonderfully intricate, and I love Daly's droll approach to the job. And switching clients in the midst of a case, well, I've never seen anything quite like that in a TV procedural before.

I wouldn't know a medical information hole if it bit me in the toe. The show keeps me on edge constantly with the diagnoses, treatments that work or don't work, and the final unravelling of the medical mystery (though almost all of the stories have followed that same pattern, ripe for some tweaking if it's not to become mundane).

I have nothing against Judd Hirsch personally. He's a wonderful actor, but with nothing to do on the show except continuously prod his sons for not getting married and producing offspring, well, I have a knee jerk reaction to that kind of parental pressure. I endured it myself for decades before I finally let my parents in on the truth that there would be no grandkids from my side of the family tree.

Around the area that kid comes from they think dressing themselves as manual labor!    ;D  Ok, ok, I'm generalizing... am I bitter that a 18 year kid can afford to wreck a car that would buy both our cars four times over?  Naaaah, not me....  ;)

The kid was neither seen nor heard.  Daddy had him locked down in the passenger side of the 'vette....

Dad was everywhere; talking to the cop, the electric co, the telephone co, the tow truck guy, apologized to the DH & myself on his kid's behalf a half dozen times.  I figure dad is an attorney or doctor and didn't want the kid to say anything stupid and make matters worse.

I remember the Timberline!  A softball team I was with dropped by there while we were playing in a tournament.  Nice place, on the huge side, big dance floor.  Terrible weather all weekend, rained the entire time until it was time to fly home (and since it was Seattle that was no cause to stop playing), but we had a blast.

And it's good to know you know Republicans (other than der B and myself) that don't fit the stereotype of knee-jerk jerks.  There's really a lot of us, we just get ignored.

My Mom was from Syracuse, New York.  It's from her that I learned that it is properly New York City, and not just New York, as that is demeaning to the entire rest of the state.

That having been said, I would still like to know why my favorite dishes from her kitchen were Mexican cuisine?  She made great tacos, great chili, great enchiladas.  These were the dishes we asked for, when we wanted something special.  For that matter, another of her specialties was another Californian dish, the Hangtown Fry, a concoction of scrambled eggs and oysters that originated from the Gold Rush era.  But I've never cared for oysters, so that wasn't high on my favorites list.

I agree with the switching clients and Daly's acting-the reason's I'm still watching.

I think they heard about your knee-jerk reaction to parental pressure and have eased up on those jokes.  In last weeks episode Hirsch didn't say much, but what he said had value.

We try not to put that kind of pressure on our kids.  Bryan’s last girlfriends kept bringing up the subject of children and he thinks I’m the one that starts it, knowing I would like a grandchild.  If his new girlfriend says anything at all I’m changing the subject as fast as possible. ;D

Almost everything my mother cooked was the best.  She was great at collecting recipes and improving on them.

Long before there was The Cheesecake Factory you could rarely find a good cheesecake, except at our house.

Dark English fruitcake with marzipan topping-I miss it so much.  My father
wasn’t a fan of marzipan so he would peel his topping off and give it to me.  I’m sorry to say this recipe has been lost. :(

Wild rice
Cornish hens stuffed with wild rice
Danish apple pie
A thick meat Spaghetti sauce
Yorkshire pudding
Breads
Custard Pie
Noodle Kugel
Matzo ball soup made with turkey, not chicken soup
Stuffed cabbage
Chocolate cake with a great frosting

My mother would write out our names with pancake batter.

I don’t know if this was the best since I have never had it anywhere else, but she fried up leftover mashed potatoes patties, in butter, for breakfast and poured Golden Syrup over them.   Craig loves these.

A nice group of packages today:  from Amazon.uk the new bios of John Schlesinger and Michael Redgrave, and the French film ON GUARD from eBay.

DRRodzinski should be here shortly.  We're having dinner and watching a movie.

Junket is a sweet custard like food of flavoured milk curded with rennett.  Junket tablets were added to the milk and had various flavours - all of which tasted much the same!!

Mr. Kevin Spirtas came by to play me the first attempt at one of our medleys.  The good news was the songs all seem to work.  The bad news was the medley made no sense musically or any other way.  We spent a half-hour going through it, and I made lots of cuts and gave new ways to get in and out of things - he'll go back now and make those changes and it should work much better.  It was twelve minutes, and I believe I've gotten it down to six.

Junket is, of course, a brand name (http://www.junketdesserts.com/products1.html)...now.  The word itself has been used since the 15th century to refer to a dessert made of sweetened curds...in other words, a kind of cheese.

Nowadays, the word "junket" refers to a trip supposedly made for collecting information but generally for those on the junket to have a grand time carrousing and behaving in sundry cheesy ways.

Hi folks!

Just got home a little while ago so I can’t stay for long—gotta feed the dogs, eat dinner, etc.

Just wanted to say:

Congrats to TCB on the role in Annie Get Your Gun.  Break another leg!

Thanks to Jane for E-mailing me your (TCB)  comments about the bus.  We’re sure going to give it everything we’ve got to keep our route just as it is.

I LOVED the pictures, DR Ginny!  Hey, I know some of those people.  In fact, I think I’ve even MET some of those people in PERSON!!!

DR VixMom—Just a FYI, Bonnie is very well behaved and does NOT jump curbs into peoples yards!  ;D

A comment on Errol Flynn.  Some years back, I was in a waiting room and a Errol Flynn movies was on the TV.   I made the comment that they don’t make movies or men like that any more.

One of the men said that he knew Errol Flynn when he was a kid.  He said that Errol was good friends with his father/mother and he had lots of memories of him coming over to house for dinner.  Fact or fiction, I don’t know but it was an interesting story.

Welcome back DR Dan The Man!  You were missed!

Great news about DR Jay and the new job.  Glad to hear that DR’s Ann and Jed are also raking in some cash!

DR Elmore, I’m so very glad that you finely have a date to look forward to that will take care of problem.  I’m hoping against hope that will be the case.   :)

Got to run.  Sorry but at least I posted!   :D

Good Afternoon!  Well, it's almost Good Evening here...

Not too bad a flight back...  However...

It's amazing how long a relatively short 20-minute cab ride to the airport can seem... as you watch the fare go up... and up... and up...  -And, yes, I already have the envelope all set so that I can mail my receipt into company management. ;)

My flight out of Indy left about 30 minutes late since the "equipment" was held up in Chicago, and didn't start deplaning until our scheduled departure time.  However, we made good time into Dulles, and I'm just glad I didn't have to worry about rushing off to a connecting flight.

Then came the walk to the shuttle to take me back to the main terminal.  Then came the slow shuttle ride back to the main terminal.  Then came the walk through the main terminal to baggage claim - up one set of stairs, turn left, down another set of stairs, turn to the right, up an escalator, turn left, down an escalator, turn right... Whew!  Ah, but, of course, the luggage was coming in on Carousel 1 - and by the time I had finished the "maze" I was standing at Carousel 7.  Then came the wait...  It was a good 15 minutes before the luggage from my flight appeared - and it had already been about 15 minutes since we had deplaned.  All of us kept checking with the agents to make sure we were all standing at the correct carousel.  In any case... My bag was the second one out!  :)

Then came another wait for the Parking Shuttle...  Thankfully, that wasn't too long, and it's an absolutely gorgeous day here.  And it was nice seeing the trees that were bare when I left two weeks ago all a-bud.  And the rush hour traffic was expected and not too bad.

So, I'm at my parents house right now.  Had some dinner.  Watching some TV.  Catching up on e-mails.  I may actually go ahead and head back to Richmond tonight.

My parents aren't home right now, which is a little strange, but it does look like my father came home from work and headed back out somewhere.  -There were "fresh" leftovers in the fridge - always a sign that my dad has come home from work (he cooks for the Secretary of HHS.)

In any case...

I thought DRs Elmore and Jose would get a kick out of seeing my cue-sheet for Pajama Game.  What this means is I am at least as busy pushing buttons on my synth as I am actually playing the keyboard :)  Sometimes I'm pizzicati strings, sometimes I'm arco strings, sometimes I'm a clarinet, sometimes I'm a clarinet with arco strings, sometimes I'm a brass band (hmm....a Cy...oh, never mind):

PS1:   V1:  PIZZ STRINGS   V2:  BRASS SCT
PS2:   V1:  STRING SCT   V2:  ENG HORN

...

I still remember when I played Into the Woods at Signature Theatre.  I covered the piano/keyboard/celeste/etc. parts as well as lent some "support" to the string section.  *OH!  and the "back beats" for the Witch's rap in the opening.  In any case...

The only time I had a break was for a little bit of underscoring/scene change music in the second act.  I "fondly" remember the Post-It note that I pasted over the section...  "HALLELUJAH!"

And I thought I would have to post this "analysis" from yesterday's New York Times.  (Yes, the following is Copyrighted, 2005, New York Times.)

April 10, 2005
DIRECTIONS | BEHIND THE SCENES

Who's Afraid of Liver Failure?

"After a while you don't get any drunker, do you?" asks Nick midway through "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" The four characters in Edward Albee's 1962 classic, now being revived at the Longacre Theater, speak plenty of savage truths - but we all know that's not one of them. What shape would they really be in after drinking as hard as they do for the play's three hours? Eric Grode toted up the alcohol (actually spring water and tea) ingested during a performance and then spoke with two experts: Dr. Jay Lefkowitch, an anatomic pathologist at Columbia University Medical Center who specializes in liver diseases, and John Carca, manager and bartender at the Paramount Bar two blocks south of the theater. Herewith, a quick assessment of each character's intake.

GEORGE (played by Bill Irwin): male, 46, tall and wiry, drinks three glasses of bourbon on the rocks. "George has already had six times the 'safe dose,' " Dr. Lefkowitch said, citing a 1987 British study of alcohol consumption limits. That makes George the teetotaler of this group. Mr. Carca took a softer line: "If he's drinking regularly, he'd be O.K."

MARTHA (Kathleen Turner,) : female, 52, full-figured; 11.33 generous tumblers of gin. Both experts were shocked at that amount. "I don't care if that's for the whole day - she's drunk," Mr. Carca said. "Realistically, she'd black out by the end unless she's a functional alcoholic." Dr. Lefkowitch said that amount, if ingested regularly, qualified as a "cirrhosis-producing dose."

NICK (David Harbour): male, 28, strapping; 7.75 bourbons on the rocks. "If he's a relative newcomer, and young and healthy, he doesn't have as much baseline metabolic equipment," Dr. Lefkowitch said. "So he'll get drunker faster. Martha's going to have to drink more than him to keep up with him."

HONEY (Mireille Enos): female, 26, petite; 5 snifters of brandy before taking a bottle to the bathroom. "She's the novice," Dr. Lefkowitch said, "so she's going to get into trouble, with resultant vomiting, incoherent speech, etc." Though Honey runs offstage to throw up at the first intermission, Mr. Carca had a hard time believing she'd be around for the next two acts: "If she's not used to drinking, she'd be ready to go to sleep at that point. She would probably remember throwing up and nothing more." In this play, that might make Honey the luckiest character of all.

Well, that makes horse races because I think the scripts for EYES have been wonderfully intricate, and I love Daly's droll approach to the job. And switching clients in the midst of a case, well, I've never seen anything quite like that in a TV procedural before.

I thought that that was a pretty unique plot twist, also.  Another reason to watch "Eyes" is Tim Daly.  He's just nice to look at! ;) AND they have an openly gay character.  That's always a plus in my book. ;D

On a totally different note, the following was sent to DH Richard by a school nurse:

Symptoms of a stroke - a true story

Susie is recuperating at an incredible pace for someone with a massive
stroke all because Sherry saw Susie stumble -  that is the key that isn't mentioned below - and then she asked Susie the 3 questions.  This literally saved Susie's life - - Some angel sent it to Suzie's friend and she did just what it said to do.  Suzie failed all three, so 911 was called.  Even though she had normal blood pressure readings and did not appear to be having a stroke, as she could converse to some extent with the Paramedics, they took her to the hospital right away. Thank God for the sense to remember the 3 questions!

Read and Learn!

Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify.  Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster.  The stroke victim may suffer brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke.  Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions:

1.  *Ask the individual to SMILE.
2.  *Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.
3.  *Ask the person to SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE.

If he or she has trouble with any of these tasks, call 9-1-1 immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher.
After discovering that a group of non medical volunteers could identify
facial weakness, arm weakness, and speech problems, researchers urged the general public to learn the three questions.  They presented their conclusions at the American Stroke Association's annual meeting last February.  Widespread use of this test could result in prompt diagnosis and treatment of the stroke and prevent brain damage.

A cardiologist says if everyone who gets this e-mail sends it to 10 people, you can bet that at least one life will be saved.

BE A FRIEND AND SHARE THIS ARTICLE WITH AS MANY FRIENDS AS POSSIBLE.

DR GINNY - Having the songs listed in Alphabetical rather than performance order was a clever way of surprising us by what song was coming next.

My favorite was the way they introduced "Take a Chance on Me" and the blocking that followed....also really liked "Does Your Mother Know" because Tanya was so wonderful!

I had a Mame Dennis moment today when the receptionist for the 4th floor asked me to cover the phones for a minute.  It wasn't quite as bad as "Widdicombe, Gutterman, Applewhite, Bitterman and Black," but at one point I did ask a caller what he was doing in Mr. Mooney's slot.  And yes, we have a Mr. Mooney.  Not Theodore J though.

We'll see if I still have a job tomorrow.

I had a lovely dinner with DRRodzinski at Good Enough To Eat on Amsterdam and 83rd Street.  I had fantastic meatloaf, mashed potatoes, and peas and carrots, and Rodzinski had fried chicken, mashed potatoes, broccoli (I think) and french fries!  Then he came back to my apartment and we watched the big musical number from GUMNAAM before THE RAGE OF THE WEREWOLF.  Alas, the DVD was defective and we couldn't play it, so we watched CRY UNCLE, which was truly a weird late 60s-early 70s film with allen Garfield and the peculiar AFTER DARK covergirl Madeleine le Roux.  She's bizarre.

Eat your heart out, DRJose!

DR Jrand54:

I was looking through the book Hollywood Babylon and there was a chapter on Frances Farmer. How much of what is said is true? (Did really say, when she arrested and asked what she did for the record, she was a professional C***s*****?)

Well DR MS - I would refer you to DR JMK and also the excellent website located belowt where you will find all you EVER wanted to know about Frances.....but as to Hollywood Babylon write up (which has been the basis of MANY other stories):

Frances did at one time give her occupation as "Prostitute" when she was being booked, the other story is apocryphal.  She did call herself a vagrant rather give her address another time. HB also perpetuates the myth that it was Frances' mother who was responsible for her intial commitment, but it was in fact Frances' sister-in-law, who saw her confinement in a santarium as preferential to a jail term.

I am sure DR JMK can offer you a link to his home page that refutes many of these myths.

But in anwer to your question, "No, she didn't."

Keith did a bit of research on turkey when ours moved in. :)

I got a very, very strange wrong number phone call tonight.  When I picked up the phone, a man with a somewhat thick-ish accent asked if he was speaking to Mr. Kochano-wa-how-ow-ski.  Since my name gets mangled most of the time by people who don't know me, I said yes, this is Mr Kochanowicz (stressing the correct pronunciation.)

He then said that he was Mr. Howa Doubi (?) and that he was calling from the country of Turkey.  I wasn't quite sure what he said and I asked him if he would repeat what he just said, which he did.  He then went on to say that he was calling because, years ago, I had purchased a number of oriental rugs from him and he wanted to know if I could possibly return them.  Before I could get out that I had never bought an oriental rug in my life, he started telling me that he had sold the rugs by mistake and that the owners were now very, very angry with him and that they want their rugs back.  I was so dumbfounded that I was getting a call like this that I just barely stuttered out that I never bought rugs from him and that he must have the wrong number.  He responded with "Oh, my my!  Oh, my my!  Oh, my my!  I am sorry!  Oh, my my!  Thank you for your trouble!  Oh, my my!  Good-bye!"  and he hung up.  I think I stood there for a good few minutes with my mouth hanging open.

And now, hours later, I am sitting here worrying about this man in Turkey who might be facing the wrath of some very, very angry ex-oriental rug owners.  He did sound upset and desperate.  I feel like I should send him vibes.

I thought that that was a pretty unique plot twist, also.  Another reason to watch "Eyes" is Tim Daly.  He's just nice to look at! ;) AND they have an openly gay character.  That's always a plus in my book. ;D

Absolutely, DR George. I find Daly's best friend to be a character I want to learn lots more about. I hope the show runs long enough to fill in some details.

Well, I was indeed out with Mr. Sweetness and Light himself, Elmoore3003. Now HE sure was jealous when he found out MBarnum had sent me a copy of GUMNAAM that he thought might be a better print than the one he got from MBarnum. :) What an opening musical number! I actually am familiar with that song because it is played over the opening credits and on the soundtrack of the wonderful film GHOST WORLD. The dance sequence is even shown on the girl's TV in that film. Look forward to watching the rest. Thanks MBarnum, and thanks for THE SADIST as well. Let me know if your werewolf copy is garbage like the one we had.

As to the film we watched entirely, CRY UNCLE! (Not to be confused with CRY FREEDOM), this is one of the most foul, crass and shamelessly sloppy films I've ever seen. In short, I liked it a lot. Allen Garfield lets it all hang out in this early John G. Avildsen work that has to be one of the trashiest movies ever made by someone who went on to win an Oscar.

For a good Allen Garfield film festival, watch this, followed by GREETINGS, HI MOM!, GET TO KNOW YOUR RABBIT, and NASHVILLE.

Question for Hollywood-o-philes.
I have Babylons I and II and I would like to know what the general consensus is these days. Generally shoddy in terms of facts? Or more or less well-researched? A lot of it seemed rather sloppy and reliant on innuendo to me. Obviously Anger had good photos, but how close did he stick to facts?

THE APARTMENT IS CLEAN!!!!!

The kitchen.  The hallway.  The bathroom.  The living room.  *He even finally put away the stray - and ugly and tacky - Christmas decorations that were still hanging around.

Just agog.

So...

That basically made it worth the drive down 95 - which was nice and easy.

DR Rodzinski, anyone who quotes Uncle Al (as in Aleister Crowley) in his epigraphs should be taken with at least a little sprinkle of salt.  However, if you're in a properly bitchy mood, the Babylon books can be quite a bit of fun.  Great pictures, one way or the other.

DR KERRY I loved your switchboard story - which referenced one of the funniest scenes Ms. Rosalind Russell EVER did - and that is saying something to be sure!

DtM, we got a whole series of phone calls from a lady in Denmark who was trying to track down some long lost relatives.  All she knew was that her grandmother had been raised by someone in Oregon named Kauffman.  We were (obviously) the wrong people, but it was a very interesting connection.

Now here's the killer punchline:
as I was typing this, Betsy, who is Queen of Clutter, went into our bedroom for a moment and returned with a letter from the lady in a manila folder labelled "Danish Kauffman."  The fact that this was the one readily accessible piece of paper that Betsy could find on a dime is funnier than I can possibly express.

And I am officially all caught up with today's posts. As for the TOD: Cooking with my mom is hit or miss unless she has help. It was always an adventure wondering just how burnt the meal would come out. I started giving her a collection of Kit 'n' Carlyle Cartoons with Carlyle saying things like "This is where we set our food on fire." (The oven) "This is where the food tries to hide so she can't burn it." (The Fridge) and my personal favorite, "You would think that something that spent it's entire life under water wouldn't be so easy to ignite!"

If you can't tell I am in a rather silly mood tonight! :-)

;D

But, seriously...

;)

I sat in a brush-up rehearsal once while they were rehearsing "Take A Chance On Me".  It was great watching that process.  They ran through the song subtextually - which makes the eventual presentation a bit more real - still fun and silly, but still real.

I got the phone call tonight offering me the role of Georges in a local production of LA CAGE AUX FOLLES, so I'm going to be busy learning lines for the next few weeks. (I'd already learned all the music in preparation for the audition in case we were asked to sing something from the score. I did have to sing "Song on the Sand.")

Congratulations!!  A local theater group here in Olympia is going to be doing La Cage next month.  My season ticket is in the front row, one seat off of the center aisle.  I've never seen the show, although I do have the original Broadway and German cast recordings of the show.  I've always wanted to play Albin (ZaZa). ;)

Here she is, Ms. Jessica Skerritt

Hmm.  I wonder if she's related to Tom Skerritt.  According to imdb.com, he's living in Seattle (as of October 2004) and has a daughter.

Modification of post:  I just checked (should have done it before I posted)...but I found out that his daughter's name is Erin.  So, no relation.  Oh, well.

Congrats on your casting, DR MattH!

I actually have similar news to share.  As of tonight, I will be in the cast of Annie Get Your Gun along with our very own TCB!  I'm not sure Tacoma is ready for a father/son act quite like ours, but by golly it's gonna be fun.  My role in the show is yet to be determined, but looks as though it'll either be ensemble or I may luck out and get the role of Charlie Davenport.  As I know more, so shall all of you.

Contratulations to you both!  I definitely will come up to see this!!  Post the details as they become available!

I'm back, I'm back, and I must now write the notes in a hurry.  They may be a few minutes late.

If Jessica Skerritt is coming to Hollywood, please be sure to give her my e-mail address :-0
