Title: FORGETTING MY DICTUM

Well, you've read the notes, they were lean mean machine, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home, which will be as soon as they find their collective dictums.

Very well, DRJOEY, I will get my head out of a sack and post. :)

DRJOEY now has a nice non-metal smile. And DRJOSE, don't forget that someone else asked about a costume piece, though nothing as grand as a disco outfit.....not that they weren't lovely, but I have something very similar still in my closet. Not that I EVER wore it!

One day soon, I must organize the detritus of materials I have accumulated from all the shows I have seen since I first became passionate about theatre.

First one to use detritus in a sentence!!!!!!!! WOOHOO!

I've caught up with the notes!

Speaking of ON GUARD (a fav film of elmore and BK), The Lovely Wife and I went to the French Film Festival tonight where we first saw it, The City of Lights, City of angels festival at the Director's Guild. Both the event and the attendance seemed stripped down this time. Food was generally uneatable to a meat guy like me...lots of fish and what meat there was was disguised under shoots and roots and mushrooms and such ilk...The food used to be excellent at this event. There was, however, lots of champagne. So we had to stay for the movie, so I could sober up before driving home. It was MEN & WOMEN by Claude LeLouche, who was, of course, in attendance...along with many other celebs and film notables. But again, not as many as in years past...I noticed Rene Aubernjenois (that can't be spelt right!), Brenda Vacarro doing a Kate Smith impersonation dressed in not so much as tent as a pavillion. Director Randall Kleiser sat behind me. We know each other slightly from the time we discussed doing When Worlds Collide and The Day The Earth Caught Fire...neither project got very far along. Seems to me there were a few other folk but I can't remember who...The movie was entertaining, but I felt a tad long...though it supposedly came in under two hours. But it was nice to see a movie about adults...the characters were thirty and up and most seemed in their fifties.

Glenn Close as Ermangarde.

The coffee shop was Sitton's on Magnolia, near where Miss Deutsch lives.

DETRITUS!

A new Lelouch movie - I must try and see it if it gets a DVD release. There is a new DVD out of Lelouch's 1970 movie, The Crook, which I've never seen and am looking forward to.

There is much DETRITUS floating around throught the Internet.

Coffee for $0.62 at Fred 62!

Reminds me of Chuck's 95er in Phoenix. I mentioned this once a long time ago and DR Laura's DH remembers the place. I was stuck in Phoenix rehearsing an abominable Children's Theatre production in 1978. It was a group of men, IIRC, 18 of us (If I Recall Correctly) rehearsing Buffalo Bill's Wild West. It was only men because the b***h*** who ran the theatre company didn't want to spend more money having a separate residence for women. We all arrived in Phoenix singly and were met by the bh's secretary, a truly bizarre woman. She picked me up at the Phoenix bus station and as she dropped me off at the motel (a step up from The Bates Motel but not by much), she reached into her purse and gave me $1.25. I thought, "How sweet" Little did I know that she had given me an entire meal allotment for we were all given $3.75 a day for food and we were expected (unless we had our own secret stash of money) to eat at Chuck's 95er, open 24 hours and you could get an entire meal for $0.95 cents (tax included)!!! Being the good boys that we were, the $0.30 usually went for a tip, but there were times when I was so hungry that I kept the extra money and bought a candy bar to quench my insistent hunger pangs. Once the rehearsal was over we would be broken up into groups of three, given a van and we would tour the country presenting a most excellent history of the life of Buffalo and the opening of the Wild West. It didn't work out quite as planned.

Oh, that two weeks in Phoenix was probably one of the worst two weeks of my life, although the last two days on the road in Indiana (sorry Jack and Joey, I don't remember where, I've blocked some of this out of my mind) when we stayed at the hot sheets motel (for those of you who don't know what a hot sheets hotel is, use your imagination) and then left the company van in the parking lot to return to our respective homes was also pretty bad. I spent a day and a half on a bus going from IN to MN. I had $37.25 left from my first paycheck and a one-way bus ticket to Minneapolis at that time cost $37.20. I had a nickel left and nothing to eat except a jawbreaker which is what I bought with my last nickel. I was never so happy to see the Minneapolis bus station. At the time I was devastated that my first professional job would turn out so badly, but now it's a big laugh. I hope the evil man who ran that Children's Theatre has had karma returned to him in many forms over many years.

And so ends your lesson for today, children. You are now excused for recess (do they still have recess?)

Thanks, Ginny. I didn't see my friend's cabaret show yesterday. I had received a card in the mail and didn't make a reservation. Usually that's not a problem but this one time I needed to call ahead. Oh, well. It's not like I haven't seen him in other things. He understood.

I see Chitty tonight. I'm looking forward to it. I really enjoyed it in London and unless and they totally screw it up, I should have a good time tonight. I'll report tomorrow.

Geez Ben,
If I'd only known, you could have staye with us and eaten real food. You could then look back at Phoenix with fondness and not well-- hunger. Who was the head of the company? I will admit that I don't remember the coffe shop. Where was it?

Wrong casting- for once Carol Channing and Mickey Rooney wouldn't be totally out of place. 20 years ago. PLEASE don't mention this to them, though. They're likely to mount a production just to be on again.

I've missed the Dans, so I'm glad the man is back.

I hate it when I forget my dictum.

Kerry, I don't remember where it was (the diner). I know it was a strip (as in mall) kind of area but other than the searing heat (it was August), the kind that would eminate up from the sidewalk and heat the soles of your shoes and feet (you couldn't go barefoot in Phoenix in August, that's for sure) and Chuck's 95er and the slimebag who ran the theatre (he lived in Scottsdale in a beautiful home, the peon actors took a side trip one day to see where Mr. Moneybags lived) I don't remember specifics such as location of the faux Bates Motel or other incidentals.

DR vixmom - Mamma Mia has been a choice at TKTS the last few times I've been there. In fact, niece Laura and I might have seen it the afternoon of March 19 had I not already had plans for Indy. We saw La Cage aux Folles instead, with the recently-replaced Georges.

Good morning, all! I slept late, and I'm now stumbling around the environment rather like the final scene of THE POSEIDON ADVENTURE.

So much good news last night! Congrats to DRs Jed and MattH. DRJed, a word of advice: if they only offer you chorus, remember there are no small actors, only small parts.

Dear Friend BK, I saw Elaine Stritch do the SAIL AWAY concert at Carnegie Recital Hall around 6 years ago, and you're right: bad libretto, not-so-bad score, and the title and best song came from a revue about 15 years earlier. The best part of the concert after Miss Stritch was hearing the fantastic echt-60s orchestrations.

DRJoey, nice smile!

DRBen, we need to hit the Union Square market soon; I need another humongous jar of honey, and there's no place cheaper.

DRGinny, follow the light! Congrats. I knew you could do it.

I've always loved DETRITUS ANDRONICUS, my favorite Shakespeare play after THE MERCHANT OF VENUS.

Is there any DVD from Song Of Love with Katharine Hepburn in the US? I’m now interested in this film and would like to see it. Hi Y'all!
Long time no post. Terribly errant and truant :(. I see things are still humming along.

Re: SAIL AWAY - I have a recording somewhere in my stash of a show Judy Garland did that was recorded live. She was sick at the time and throughout kept apologizing for her performance. Anyway, she opened with "Sail Away" and, even with her problems, it's the best rendition I've heard of the song. IMO, she got the intent of the song just right.

I know I should stay longer--but I just can't right now! More's the pity :'(. Will try to catch ya later.

Take care.

This made me think of JMK's comment the other day about being suproise at the language he heard at the high school

Quote
Kids say the foulest things
Anti-swearing efforts fall on deaf earsBy Valerie Strauss

Updated: 8:47 p.m. ET April 11, 2005Dan Horwich's English class is a bastion of clean language, where students read the classics and have weighty discussions free of invective and profanity. But when the bell rings and they walk out his door, the hallway vibrates with talk of a different sort.

"The kids swear almost incessantly," said Horwich, who teaches at Guildford High School in Rockford, Ill. "They are so used to swearing and hearing it at home, and in the movies, and on TV, and in the music they listen to that they have become desensitized to it."

In classrooms and hallways and on the playground, young people are using inappropriate language more frequently than ever, teachers and principals say. Not only is it coarsening the school climate and social discourse, they say, it is evidence of a decline in language skills. Popular culture has made ugly language acceptable and hip, and many teachers say they only expect things to get uglier.

Horwich said he won't tolerate vulgarity in his classroom, and he tells students on the first day of school what he expects. But the 31-year-old teacher said he feels as though he is waging a losing battle -- and he isn't alone. Many teachers say that even if they can control their own rooms, only schoolwide efforts can make a real difference.

Teachers say their principals often don't give them support on the issue, and principals say they can't because administrators are worried about "bigger" problems. Many parents are no help, cursing themselves or excusing their children's outbursts, teachers say. And though many school systems ban profanity, not much happens to most offenders. Many teachers say they no longer bother reporting it.

‘Somebody has to call them’
"Nobody turns their head anymore on the whole," said veteran teacher Pauline Carey of Mount Rainier Elementary School in Prince George's County, noting that her school is an exception in that all the adults are on the same page in demanding respect.

"Somebody has to call them on this language and not just pass it off," Carey said.

George Parker, a D.C. elementary school teacher and president of the Washington Teachers' Union, agreed. "In the same way we teach students math and English, we have to say that you can't come into our schools and use profanity," he said. "And we have to have a systemwide program to deal with it."

But there isn't one, Parker said. Some D.C. teachers, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they feared repercussions, said they had been told by their principals to "get used to the cussing" because officials downtown had more pressing concerns. A survey last year by Parker's union showed discipline was the leading concern of D.C. teachers.

Profanity, in the large sense, is defined as words that others consider offensive, although it originally was restricted to words that were blasphemous. Once heard mostly in whispers, today it is inescapable. "I never thought I would say this -- once being a hard-core anti-music censor -- but I understand why [young people] are doing this: You almost can't find a song, video game, television show, anything, without a curse word," said Laura Lee Cox, a seventh-grade teacher at Cedartown (Ga.) Middle School.

Children ages 4 and 5 often go through a phase of using inappropriate language they hear but can't understand, child-rearing experts say. Parents are advised against reacting too strongly because the youngsters soon learn from adults that the words are inappropriate.

The problem, said James V. O'Connor, director of the Cuss Control Academy in Lake Forest, Ill., is that when children learn that the words are inappropriate, they enjoy using them all the more to get a rise out of their parents.

Soon it becomes "cool" behavior at school, even if many children don't understand what they are saying. Anne Ryan, a music teacher at Half Day School, a third- and fourth-grade public school in Lincolnshire, Ill., asks students to bring in favorite music lyrics to discuss.

The students constantly question: 'Is this a bad word?' 'Is that a bad word?' " she said. "They hardly know what constitutes profanity."

High school students know, but by then the habit has formed, experts say, and the teenagers know they can get away with it. Said Kevin Shaigany, 17, a student at Walter Johnson High School in Montgomery County: "What can they really do [about it] in high school?"

Ivette Lopez, 18, a freshman at Montgomery College, said most of the time students aren't trying to be offensive. Seth Kroll, a 21-year-old American University student, agreed, saying: "It's part of our lexicon."

Lazy language
Others see it as lazy language, especially when the same word is used as different parts of speech. "People use it instead of articulating what they want to say," said Naomi Schimmel, 21, a George Washington University student.

Horwich said constant use of profanity reveals a poor vocabulary, and O'Connor lamented the toll it is taking on the language.

"There are words virtually disappearing from our English language," O'Connor said. "When people are mad, what do they say? They say they are pissed off or [expletive] pissed off. No range. There is a big difference between being upset or livid. There is a big difference between irritated and infuriated."

Parents can exacerbate the problem, teachers say, by defending children caught swearing in school.

"As soon as the kid gets suspended, or has a detention, or whatever the consequence, you have the parent come running down to the school, yelling and screaming and swearing, saying they are going to fight it and saying they are going to call their lawyer, and the school administrators back down," Horwich said.

Many teachers and administrators still put up a fight against foul language.

George Ferguson, a teacher at Big Cypress Elementary School in Naples, Fla., said he sometimes has children write class rules repeatedly, or he talks to an offender's parents.

Deborah Alford, a sixth-grade special education teacher at Cedartown Middle School, tells students "on a daily basis" what language is appropriate.

Yvonne Morse, a veteran D.C. educator, advises strategies such as counseling, peer mediation and problem-solving sessions, parent conferences, in-school suspensions and letters of apology written by the offender.

Bonnie Tryon, principal at Golding Elementary School in Cobleskill, N.Y., said a schoolwide standard is key. "If you don't stop the little things," she said, "the little things become big."

This made me think of JMK's comment the other day about being suproise at the language he heard at the high school

Ah, yes. When my Joe's older sister (known hereinafter as DoDo) had her firstborn (now a college freshman), she became very strict about language, which was curious, as she could swear a sailor under the table any day. A younger sister (known hereinafter as Pix) was living upstairs, and she had a habit of peppering her conversation with the S word. To which DoDo would always reply, "Not in front of my daughter! I don't want her to pick up bad language."

This rule was strictly enforced for about the first year of the girl's life. Once she actually began to learn to speak, however, DoDo forgot all about the rule and went back to her old potty-mouthed ways.

Oh, at times she and her husband tried to substitute "euphemisms". Until the child's teacher told them she had called a little boy a "rectal orifice".

Her son, born later, used to shock all (and amuse his mother) by using the f word at the age of three.

And then, on his first day of school, his mother felt she had to warn him, because of a recent case of inappropriate behavior by a school-bus driver.

When the young lad returned home, he got off the bus and said quite loudly in the driver's presence, "He didn't try to touch my penis."

What Stephen Sondheim song is going through my head?

And speaking of campy rock musicals, have all of y'all been seeing the ads for the HBO version of the musical Reefer Madness? I've never seen the show, but--heavenly days, McGee!--the story takes place in the 1930's. Do we really need it to look and sound like MTV?

Much better in my book is DR J. Kauffman's Going to Pot, based on the same source material, but with a score appropriate to the era. (See "Chapter 35: Much Better Adaptations of Reefer Madness".)

Young up-and-coming singer-actor Jessica Skerrit performs her one woman cabaret MEN I'VE HAD at Thumper's Cabaret, located on 15th and Madison in Seattle, Washington, produced by Contemporary Classics.

The cabaret features songs from her four favorite male composers (Kander & Ebb, Jason Robert Brown, Stephen Sondheim, and William Finn), presented with a through-line of love, regret, disappointment and hope. The cabaret will feature such songs as "Getting Married Today," "Infinite Joy," "Everybody's Girl," and "Letting You Go." Skerrit, a native of Washington, has appeared in CLO's production of ON THE TOWN, understudied in Village Theatre's HOW TO SUCCEED..., and is currently seen in SOUTH PACIFIC. She has appeared at Thumpers before in BLAME IT ON MY YOUTH, HERE'S TO THE LADIES, LIVE BY REQUEST and many showcases with Ann Evans.

First on weightier topics:

Angel Jim has received his papers from the Parole Board, and they are full of major errors. He is listed as pleading to a Felony D, a violent crime, use of a weapon. He actually pled to a Felony E, nonviolent, and there was never any hint of a weapon.

It seems to me that this cannot be a simple typographical error. Given the actions of the police and the general state of corruption in the Town of Crookville Brookville, not to mention our belovèd county--something seems quite rotten here.

His lawyer is looking into the matter, and I am supposed to speak to her this afternoon.

I remembered someone else who was at the French Film thingie last night: Henry Jaglom seemed to be Ms. Vacarro's escort. I've never seen a Henry Jaglom film. We also met the national president of AFTRA, who was complimenting The Lovely Wife's hair. Very nice man.

BK, this LeLouch film was actually combined what had been intended to be two films (I think the first had already been released...but did badly) that were supposed to be part of a trilogy initially into one film. He said when it gets released on DVD, the extras with excised footage from the two intended film will probably be as long as the actual film.

I have to say that with copious amounts of horse tranquilizer and the proper director, I think Liza would actually make a pretty good Dolly. :)

WFO, thanks for your kind comments re: Going to Pot. Virtually everyone who has listened to our version has said our score is head and shoulders above the grandiose LA version. But of course they're usually sitting face to face with the composer when they say that. :) Our recording was made in the worst possible circumstances, with a cast of mostly teenagers (and very young ones at that, some kids as young as 13 and 14), most of whom had never set foot in a recording studio before. So the fact that we got the performances we did is something of a minor miracle. Our version is available for licensing (cheap!) for any of you out there in community theater land. ;D

I've had a busy day. I got moved to a new desk and have spent much of the day re-orienting (something like Henry Orienting) myself to my new workspace. I think I'm all settled in. My computer works, my phone works, but most important, my Internet connection works and I can get my daily fix of certain material (nudge, nudge, wink, wink, know what I mean, know what I mean?).

I also had a phone call (which I missed) from the BBC. I'm becoming a fixture over there. One of the many programs I listen to is on BBC Radio 3. It's Stage and Screen. I've promoted them shamelessly, most recently when they did the 2-part Birthday tribute to Sondheim. Well, they are having a "Stage and Screen Interactive" which just means that the listeners can call or write or e-mail and suggest that a certain song be played. The show will air sometime in May when they have all the requests together.

I e-mailed the show, never expecting a response, since I'm on this side of the pond and they have thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of listeners easier to reach than me, suggesting that they play This Nearly Was Mine from South Pacific. I told them why that song meant something to me. In 1979 I was a chorus sailor in a summer stock production and besides having a wonderful summer, the show had a great Emile DeBecque. Every night I would stand in the wings and watch and listen (I wish I could remember his name but I can't) to the man playing DeBecque sing This Nearly Was Mine He nailed that song every night. It could bring tears to my eyes, and it was a six-week run.

This long drawn out story is the lead up to the fact that Edward Seckerson's producer from Stage and Screen called today asking if they could record my story about South Pacific to use as an intro for This Nearly Was Mine on the "Stage and Screen Interactive"

Hoo and Ray! I have a radio career, finally. I may not be getting paid for it, but listening to Internet radio has sure paid off for me.

Hollywood Sheets & Music? Oh...nevermind. I didn't read that right!

The one summer I was at the Hampden-Sydney Music Festival in Farmville, VA, there was one local music store in town. Tails 'n' Tunes. And that's exactly what it was - half pet store, half music store!

The first time a bunch of drove up to the place, we just drove around it a few times with our mouths agape. It was housed in a small house - complete with lawn "decorations" of an old water heater, an old Chevy, some tires and a bathtub. And then once we stepped inside.... WOW!

A bird cage here, a bin of piano music there. A display of pet food on the wall, with a selection of guitar strings next to it. Needless to say, the clarinet player was a little wary of buying reeds there. ;)

It was a true mom and pop operation. And it turned out to be run by the father of the family who used to run the chain of music stores in Richmond. So, if TnT ever needed a special order of some Beethoven or Schumann..

Lovely story, DRBEN. I know what you mean by that song. It's the one I wait for when I see SOUTH PACIFIC. I listen to all these arguments about these new young composers, about how great they are....that guy with three names and a couple of others. I have listened to their work. And not ONE of them has come up with a song that can top R/H or in some cases - even EQUAL them.

"This Nearly Was Mine" and "Love Look Away" are two of the most beautiful songs ever.

Last night we met our landlord for next year at the Sunshine Cafe to sign our lease for next year. We ordered dinner and talked about the lease and his philosophy on being a landlord. He talked about how he had never wanted to be a landlord but then he got a landlord who was like a second father to him. His wife had a similar experience with her landlords so they decided they would go into business to be the "good" kind of landlords. He said we have an open friendship with him and if we ever need to talk to him about anything to feel free. The rent is only 185 a month for each of us too. We signed the lease and he paid for our dinners. I am looking forward to living there next year. Most of my friends have horror stories about their landlords but my friends who live there right now absolutley love them. They are such nice people! :)

I've spent the afternoon catching up on programs on the DVR, primarily DEADWOOD and DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES from Sunday.

Wow! Mr. W's method of dealing with those who had knowledge of his sexual prediliction. Totally caught me by surprise.

ON DH: Gabrielle playing with fire. Oh, my!

And get this irony. On Sunday, Lesley Ann Warren appeared on two different shows playing the mother of series regulars. She played Teri Hatcher's mother on DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES and in the next hour she was Kathryn Hahn's mother on CROSSING JORDAN. In the latter, she was struck by a car and died at the end of the show, so no recurring role for her there.

BK, do you have a good handyman? If so, email me his number. I have to do some repair on the deck before Derby Day.

By the by, I am carrying the BK torch to the hinterlands. In my interview in the local hometown paper they asked if I was close friends with any actors, directors, or writers that folks might know. My answer:

"We don't reallly run in those circles and I'm quite happy not to. Having worked with so many stars early in my career made me realize they're just people...and a great many, despite all their gifts, are screwed up, unhappy people. Most of our friends out here are people we've known for years. Many are fellow Kentuckians from college theatre days...

"Friends you might know are Larry Drake, who played Benny on LA LAW, a dear friend since my Dallas days. Esteemed writer Harlan Ellison and his lovely wife, Susan, are close friends of ours. Famed pin-up and actress, the delightful June Wilkinson, we know through our dinner theatre circle. Author, director, composer, and producer of the best Broadway related CDs in the biz, Bruce Kimmel, is also a close pal."

DR Jose, sounds a lot like my job at the Information Services Desk of a downtown urban public library.

One of my favorite "classes" in elementary school was "Library". My grade school had a nice library, and a great librarian who opened up many different worlds of literature to us. I still remember one "project" where we made new dust jackets for certain books. We actually got to design all the art - and draw and color it all ourselves. I seem to remember doing an army story - at least some book with a soldier on it.

We even had classes on the Dewey Decimal System. And I still remember my "disappointment" the first time I went to a "big" library and found that they did not use the DDS. -And then there was the LoC system...

After I had accumulated quite a few boxes of DETRITUS after writing to various companies and organizations - remember those "Free Stuff for Kids" books? - I contributed them to my grade school's library for their pamphlet files. I had a ton of stuff from NASA and the American Coal Association - they sent out these great little cards with actual samples of the different types of coal. OH! And Bethlehem Steel sent me a small sheet of their latest alloy (had to weigh at least three pounds!) -Needless to say, our postman at the time had to wonder why this kid was getting all these big envelopes from all these various companies. I still remember the day he came to door with one of those plastic bins filled with "stuff" for me... And then came back a few minutes later with another bin!

Re: Reefer Madness. I can't remember exactly where it was (Broadway.com?), but there was a forum thread on the two Reefers (so to speak) that got very acrimonious but was hilarious (for me, anyway). I can't remember if it was Murphy or Studney who actually started posting on it, defending their work (one of my favorite quotes was someone accusing them of only knowing three chords, at which point they posted the changes to a song which had--wait for it--four chords in it). But then it degenerated into something to do with AFM (which, frankly, I can't remember), with, again, either Murphy or Studney saying his boyfriend was dressing up as a giant rat outside the theater every night in protest. (Are we not in Kansas anymore, Toto?).

Anyway, there were several nice posts on the thread about the GTP score, which I was amazed at, since most of the people seemed to be NYC-ers.

And you know something, DRMS, even if it had been THREE people, I still wouldn't like Ribbons Down My Back, my idea of an ultimate show-stopper...and I don't mean in a GOOD way.

I think I've mentioned this before, but... "Ribbons Down My Back" has to be my least favorite song to hear and play at auditions. It just annoys me, and it's very hard to make those melody and lyrics sound anything but... well, desperate, for lack of a better word right now.

And then there are the young women who come in and mimic the vocal quality of the actress/dubber in the movie. Worse than nails on a chalkboard!

Actually two different people dubbed her. One in her solos and another in her group numbers.

Gilda Maiken (ensemble) and Melissa Stafford (solo)

Thanks for the info! I wonder why they used (needed?) two different people? :-\

DR CP - a couple of days ago you mentioned the Ramon Novarro house designed by Lloyd Wright (son of Frank) is in your neighborhood. I seem to remember a photo spread (maybe in Architectural Digest) of the house when Keaton lived there and I didn't like the "improvements" either.

Here is a photo of the house from 1932 when Ramon moved in. Maybe next time you and Tewkes are strolling by, you can snap a photo of the house for us as it is today. ;D

Jrand54, no need to take a picture of it; it still looks the same from the outside. Excepty for some very large copper house numbers to match the outside copper trim on road behind the house, all Keaton's changes were done on the inside. It was Architectural Digest who did a spread on the magazine.

Rodzinski, I'll be curious to hear your review of Pillowman. Glad you like the radio station...it's being able to get things like WMKV that makes the internet worth it. I also love that I can listen to the BBC on the internet. I liked it that I could get baseball games broadcast free on the local radio stations too, before the Major League Baseball stepped in and ruined it.

Tsk, tsk, tsk... You've got it all wrong, DR Rodzinksi...

The place around the corner is Japanese, and they specialize in yakitori.

The Mexican place is really more of a Oaxacan eatery.

The dessert place is across the street, and their house specialty is a blood orange pound cake topped with a Meyer Lemon curd.

And I would never serve cheesecake to my guests. Only cookies - probably my Oatmeal-Chocoate-Chip-Pecan-Toffee Cookies, Peanut Butter Cookies or my Cantuccini - something portable so that they can carry them around while they follow my detailed self-guided walking tour maps. *And for those guests with nut allergies, I would serve them my Chocolate Crack-Ups and/or my Lemon-Thyme Cornmeal Butter Cookies.

Lemon-Thyme Butter Cookies! :)

WELL - now I know why Kathleen Turner can give the stunning performance that she is giving in Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf now on Broadway!

In the background as I work on the computer (and while I wait for NCIS and The Amazing Race) two television shows called EXTRA and ENTERTAINMENT TONIGHT are on. I haven't watched either of them for years...but they are awful, just awful. Nothing but plugs for movies and "rumors" about Britney and Mariah that are completely manufactured to be denied.

ANYWAY...Kathleen got ready for her part in Albee's play by having her knee replaced. Can you imagine her trying to do it with her OLD knee? i would say it makes all the difference!

JRand54, The Ennis-Brown house is also in our neighbourhood. I walk by that one too. Never been inside, but the outside having real problems and in need of some tender-loving care. Apparently Lloyd Wright did a lot of experimenting with different types of cement...and whatever this type is, a lot of it seems to be crumbling away. Of course, the Navarro house isn't Frank Lloyd Wright, but Lloyd Wright, the son. We have another Lloyd Wright, the son, house close by that is finally going through a much needed renovation. Part of it is covered by "Kimmel Tarps". There is another Frank Lloyd Wright on Franklin Ave, also within walking distance, that looks very Mayan or Aztecan in its influence...It was at one time the home of Dr. George Hill Hodel, whose son -- retired LA detective, Steve Hodel -- who has written a book called BLACK DAHLIA AVENGER, claiming his father was the murderer of the Black Dahlia. Its caused a great deal of controversy, but it's fairly compelling and there a many creditable people who are vouching for it.

Then in Barnsdale Park, we have another Frank Lloyd Wright house which has just been restored.

QUEEN BEE is a good choice, MBARNUM. Do not delay! John Ireland is along for the ride as well. Always a good reason to take a look.

And why can't you come to Tacoma in June?

Simple! Right?

Simple and fun if we could travel then. We are still planning on gutting our kitchen. If we had begun the work at the beginning of March as we had intended June would have been okay. Once the work begins the only way we will leave Bogie is if there is an emergency. Now I might be able to sneak away for a few days. Maybe Penny can pick me up if she is going this way. MBarnum owes his mother a visit and could come get me . I could take the bus to Portland again and hitch a ride. Of course all this depends on Bogie staying healthy.

                                 Simple! Right? ;D

And we will of course need pictures of any said event in the NW! Perhaps Leslie Parrish Bach could be invited. A human interest story in the local paper might bring her out of hiding - if there was to be a reading of a LP/BK passage!

A good night for most of the IDOL contestants. They were singing songs they felt comfortable with and there really weren't any horrible performances in the bunch. (Of course, all of the best singers are left, so that's not surprising).

I really was rather impressed with Scott performance tonight because he ACTUALLY GAVE ONE. He didn't just stand there and weave side to side but actually got into the lyrics and rocked it. Then, fool that he was, he ruined it all by arguing with simon over his performance and proclaiming how millions of people in America couldn't stand before a live camera and do what he just did. True, but stupid to show such hubris. He'll be going home, I'm predicting.

I didn't like Nadia's song much at all, and she didn't do anything with it, so I suspect she may be back in the bottom three as well along with Anthony who sang VERY well, with much power and control, but I just don't think he can play with the big boys any more.

As for busy signals, the busiest lines were Constantine, Carrie, and (surprise) Anwar!

Started CLOSER this afternoon, but only got about an hour of it watched before I had to tend to other matters.

What a dramatic roundelay! I have never read nor seen the play, but I have been instantly drawn into the partner swapping and resulting jealousies and furies. I just know it's going to get uglier before it's over. I think all of the performances are excellent (so far).

I also was able to watch one of the last three remaining hour POIROT mysteries - "The King of Clubs." I'm a little sad now that I've collected all 36 hour-long episodes. Only two more left to watch on DVD.

Yes, I got that e-mail about the Fox Studio Classics, too, but honestly, Deep Discount wasn't selling them for much more than that the last time I ordered one from them.

I guess I should trade up to that latest edition of ALL ABOUT EVE. I've looked at Fox's first release, and I don't really see anything wrong with it. But every review I've read said it was worlds better in the new edition.

I'm looking forward to hearing what the "judges" will say tomorrow after watching the show on tape - if they watch tonight's show on tape. Lots of pitchiness, especially Anwar - that last note.... He seemed nervous to me tonight - breath wasn't hooking up and in at all.

And, yes, Vonzell, may have sung the song in a higher key, but she didn't do all those "whistle tones".

And Scott really was pitchy on the lower sections of the song.

And I don't think I've ever heard that Crystal Gale song that Nadia sang - and my parents had a lot of Crystal Gale LPs in their collection!

And a very interesting cutting of "Bohemian Rhapsody".

But, as you stated, no real horrible performances in the bunch.

We shall see....

Well, I really am sleepy, so...

I'm gonna finish watching Letterman - it's his 58th Birthday today. Who else turned 58 recently? ;) ??? In any case...

Steve is packing up his apartment tomorrow, and I'm gonna head over and help. His sister, Becky, will be there too, and it will good to catch up with her too.

So...

Goodnight.

Yes, there was pitchiness. Carrie tried for some high note and landed under it, then stretched her voice to reach it and got really raspy. Gad, that was a bad moment. Vonzell missed a couple of notes, and so did most of them. I guess I meant overall, there were no train wrecks.

One of the few sitcoms I truly enjoy. I was rather sad when I found out the local Muncie PBS doesn't carry the series. (The only station we are able to get.) My eventual goal is to buy the DVD set though and then I can get a laugh whenever I want! Some of those episodes I've seen 5 or 6 times and they haven't gotten old yet. I have been told I should really see Faltry Towers.

I saw Fiddler on the Roof tonight. It was one of those free in advance tickets that Ball State offers the students. I was suprised at how much I liked it since I generally frown at the shows that have been hitting Ball State lately. My two biggest complaints was it had only a 6 or 7 member pit and the other is the fact that Emens is just too big for these shows. There wasn't much spectacle which was actually rather refreshing and it was staged very well. The talent on stage was great and the guy who played Tevye did well. It's just harder to connect to the show when you are in the back row of a balcony that seats over 3,000 people.

If you really want to jump in the deep end Joey - look out for "Little Britain" and "The League Of Gentlemen".
(I suspect not on free to air TV in the USA)

DR Sandra would no doubt suggest "Red Dwarf". "Black Adder" and "Fawlty Towers" are still classics in my book.

BLACK ADDER gets the prize for me. Both LEAGUE OF GENTLEMEN & LITTLE BRITAIN have run on BBC AMERICA here. Not much for LEAGUE, but I love LITTLE BRITAIN and am impatiently waiting the second season which has already run in England or is running now. Very, Very funny.

I also like MEN BEHAVING BADLY & BRILLIANT (Oooo! Suits you, sir!)! I love FAWLTY TOWERS...and PYTHON, of course...but it really is time to give both a rest, they've run them so often here for so many years!

Tomovoz, did you ever get a British show called HAGGARD down under? I picked it up on DVD and found it very amusing. Another British classic for me is UP POMPEII with Frankie Howerd. And, of course, YES, MINISTER & YES, PRIME MINISTER are the creme de la creme. But for raucous low, cheap laughs there's nothing like ARE YOU BEING SERVED?

Synchronicity in ordering the same DVD twice department: I just today received the Sondheim Celebration at Carnegie Hall DVD, which had been offered as a cheapie bonus when I placed another order a few weeks ago. The minute it arrived I thought, "Hmmm...don't I already have that in the Sondheim boxed set?" Yes, I did. Which brings me to:

Would anyone here like a nice still-sealed DVD of A Sondheim Celebration at Carnegie Hall? Cheap!!!

Re: BK in Portland:
BK if you booked yourself, let me know ASAP as I am still phoning bookstores for you!

A couple of days ago, I ordered "Smiles of a Summer Night" from deepdiscountdvd.com and saw the offer of "Sondheim: A Celebration at Carnegie Hall" for only $2.99. Even though I already own it, I went ahead and ordered it. Hey, $3 is cheap! :D

And I would be willing to go to Portland AND Seattle to meet BK! ;)
