Title: BY GEORGE - DUNING, THAT IS

Well, you've read the notes, the notes were accompanied by George Duning's music, and now it is time for you to post until the Bell, Book, and Candle cows come home.

I slept rather well last night.  I woke around 2:30 after five hours of sleep, and then the cats began misbehaving around 4:30.

I had a long rambling dream in which I had a meeting with Glen Young, a rather obnoxious fellow who began a Drama Book Shop competitor on the Upper West Side around West 68th Street in the 1980s, Applause Books.  The meeting was scheduled for 6:30 PM, and I was wandering around Manhattan till it was time for the meeting.  I ran into Rob Berman and the two of us wandered about together.  Somewhere I lost my cane and a family of French tourists offered me theirs.  We ended up in a coffee shop where I watched Rob take a number of post-Covid-19 pills, and I tried to call the late John McGlinn to get him to the meeting.  We finally ran into Mr Young and I woke.

I have no idea if Glen Young is still alive or not. Around 1983-84 I applied for a job at Applause Books.  I had been lured away from the Drama Book Shop in 1981 with promises of better pay by a rival theatre bookshop with dreams of becoming a success, and I was looking for work again in 1983.  I knew a couple of employees but I never heard anything.  When I inquired about my application, I was told the job had been filled.  I said to the clerk, Tell Mr Young he made two big mistakes: he never called me to tell me another person got the job and his biggest mistake was not hiring me.

I went on unemployment for a bit, worked for Theatre Books on West 42nd Street, and ended up at Classic Books on 48th Street and Sixth Avenue, a non-theatre Canadian bookshop chain I really liked.  In 1985, I went back to The Drama Book Shop and stayed until 1997.

I think the first film composers I became aware of were Max Steiner - GWTW was a big favorite of my mother's and I had the Warner Brothers LP of the film score - and later John Addison and John Barry because of my infatuation with the soundtracks of Tom Jones and Goldfinger.

This pandemic thing is really starting to get to me.

You can only be "isolated" so long before you start wondering what day it is.

I've been keeping busy, working with voice actors on audio versions of my various one-person plays, but I'm running out of plays.

I guess that's why I'm starting to write a new one.

The good news is that, with everybody stuck at home, audio sales have spiked.

I was infatuated with the Goldfinger soundtrack. It was my first Bond film (only because I hadn’t been permitted to go to the first two), and both film and soundtrack blew me away.

As far as soundtrack recordings go, that was probably one of my first ever.

Good morning, DR JohnG!

Howdy. Did Thatch have a nice birthday?

I hope so!  He got a lot of brushing and cuddles from me, along with his dried salmon and shrimpies treats.  Annabelle, who's been displaying a bit of jealousy lately, tried to crash his fun, but I wouldn't let her.  Stella, who's half their age and twice their size - she's a big kitty! - tends to go into her own world for amusement.  I think she spends too muchy time  alone in the bathroom sink.

Yes DR ELMORE - your cards let us know that someone in charge needs to clear an obstacle in the way - and this obstacle might even be another person.  And it may be that ONLY ONE PERSON needs to be in charge.

The Husband Hunters is about the real-life buccaneers, as Edith Wharton called them, who couldn’t buy their way into the 400, so they married into British nobility.

In the beginning, we learn about the rules of the 400. If you are invited to a ball and cannot make it because you have died, your executor must go in your place. Duly noted.

I think you'll like it.  She's a wonderful writer.  I loved her biography of Sarah Bernhardt, Madame Sarah, as well as Our Hearts Were Young and Gay, which she co-wrote with Emily Kimbrough.  It's been an open secret for years that Arsenic and Old Lace had a major overhaul and rewrite by Lindsay and Crouse before they produced it on Broadway.  I think Cornelia Otis Skinner officially confirmed it in her book Life with Lindsay and Crouse, ehich os really fun.

Pasta papa was great and I'm very full.  I've put aside the Toscanini set because the sound is just so either bad of variable I can't enjoy the many fine performances.  I'll get back to it.  Instead I've begun the Bruno Walter set - this guy was a conductor and since he was with Columbia his early recordings sound GREAT.  It's funny, but growing up and practically living in record stores, the conductors I was most aware of were all on Columbia so I knew those names by heart because you could not escape their albums - Bruno Walter, Eugene Ormandy, Bernstein...  RCA had a few like Reiner and Leinsdorf, but for whatever the reasons, the Toscanini recordings sound awful.

George, did you watch that production of City of Angels on YouTube? I'm enjoying the singing and the staging. I only watch it a little at a time. There's a tiny bit more loose choreography than I remember the original production had, but it's fairly faithful. I have a soft spot for this show.

Thinking of you, Chas, and sending comforting thoughts.
It never gets easier, I know from experience.
Poe had a long and loving life with you...glad that he chose you as family.
Sending hugs...and hoping that soon the time will come when thoughts of Poe bring a smile to your face.

I've watched it in bits, too.

No. J.B. wants a drive that’s straight through. If I stop, it will be at a rest area.

I have to say and so I shall - this Bruno Walter is every bit as good as the Munch box.  And a breath of fresh air after the Toscanini  set (thus far), sound-wise.

I'm working on a video file that I want to burn to DVD, but every time I recorded it from my DVR to my computer, each file had little distortions throughout it. :P

I'm going through the four...count 'em...FOUR times I recorded the show and making note of when the goobers are, and I'll make a composite video that should have very few, if any, distortions.

It's only when I record this particular program to my computer that the distortions occur.
