Well, you've read the notes, the notes made a comeback and had sauce, and now it is time for you to post until the saucy cows come home.

"Ain't It a Pretty Night" and "The Trees on the Mountains" from Susannah
"The Willow Song" from The Ballad of Baby Doe
"Glitter and Be Gay" from Candide

The thunderstorm between 7:00 and 8:30 or so was quite noisy last night.  The three cats luckily are not frightened by storms or firecrackers, so I'm happy.  Randy and Jo's German shepherds are terrified.  Their beautiful Maddie had a special hideaway that Jo prepared for her in the closet next to the vacuum cleaner.

Last night we watched another Miss Marple, Endless Night, which had a crafty plot that kept me guessing.   This is another Agatha Christie novel that did not have Miss Marple as a character and the BBC version wedges her in so badly that I felt the last 15 minutes went totally to hell because the screenwriter had her behaving completely out of character.

According to Wikipedia, there are eighteen novels and collections of short stories with Jane Marple, so I do not understand the need to wedge the character into other Christie mysteries.

I don't think we have anyone around here specializing in fried chicken sandwiches except Chick-Fil-A and Popeye's.

Good to hear that BK is enjoy Eleanor Steber's voice. I think it's one of the most uniquely beautiful ones ever. Mozart arias are perfect, but I don't think there are any pieces she did that weren't perfect for her.

Here's a discography, which may or may not be complete:  https://shrtm.nu/TftM

Those 1950s Metropolitan Opera recordings on Columbia are golden -- Madama Butterfly and Cosi fan tutte, both with Richard Tucker (and Roberta Peters in the latter), and La fanciulla del West. I also see a Marriage of Figaro with Ezio Pinza, conducted by Bruno Walter, that I hadn't known about. There are a number of live performance recordings that look very tempting.

In concert music she was especially known for Barber's Knoxville "Summer of 1915", which she commissioned, and Berlioz's Les nuits d'ete. I know she's on a Porgy and Bess compilation. And good lord, look at that Oklahoma!. I don't believe I've ever crossed paths with that one.

I am so happy to have known her and played for countless voice lessons with her at school. She didn't do much concertizing herself in those years, but I remember a wonderful Four Last Songs with the student orchestra and Levine, another perfect piece for her intelligence and vocal beauty.

What great lists already. It would take me all day to come up with favorite arias without simply cribbing from these!

Without looking up their titles, I'll just add:  the major arias (or "fragments" of same) in Berg's Wozzeck and Lulu, Strauss's Elektra and Salome and Der Rosenkavalier, and Stravinsky's The Rake's Progress and Oedipus Rex.

So would I. In fact, my last dream this morning concerned a huge platter of cheeseburgers that I couldn't quite get to. (Tragic!) Hadn't had one of my "bountiful food" dreams in a while. It's one of my less frequent standards.

Yes I have picked up books.

I don't think that I explained the other part right.  I can still recommend books and go to the top of the queue. I just can't reserve anything online.

Although my library has not gotten any new books since March. So i have no idea what has happened to all of the new releases since then.

I was checking out all the Gian Carlo Menotti Archive posts of his work on youtube, and it's an amazing collection.  That led me to NBC Opera, and it's a pity that kinescopes of so many are now lost.  One of the lucky ones is the 1952 broadcast of Benjamin Britten's great Billy Budd, starring my late friend Theodore Uppman, who created the role.

I looked through those Menotti works, and it’s wonderful, but I reacted in much the same way. Someone had made reference to a telecast of The Saint of Bleecker Street that isn’t represented there, and I’ve wanted the second Amahl (1964?) forever. (Although I’m thinking I’ve heard there is a bootleg floating around out there.)

Anyway, I’ve bookmarked the page to thoroughly check out later.

I made a Cajun chicken salad for lunch today. Nothing wrong with it, but the spice seemed to fight the rest of the salad. Seemed out of place. I might make the same salad without the spice:  chicken, celery, onion, parsley, pecans, mayo, salt.

Just heard from one of our guests.  Our esteemed musical director left an entire verse out of her track - not the first time he's done this.  His mom was in the hospital (in rehab now) so he really was not all "there" during any of this, and of course he won't be back until five or six to fix his mistake - she's in NY and we have to get her done because she's leaving town.

It's a pain because I would prefer to do everything myself. But the part I really don't like is that I cannot reserve any books that someone else has taken out. Although I wonder if they would agree to override that manually if I called.

Went for a little drive and stopped at Rite Aid to get some Chapstick and more Claritin-D - thankfully they had the 24-hour kind.

Listening to quite a few Mozart symphonies via Bruno with a B.  I'm getting close to being through all the mono stuff.  And then most of the stereo are redos of the mono so that will be interesting.  The fun of the original jacket thing is that the CDs also replicate the original LP label - so about twenty-seven discs have the really old blue mono label, then another twenty have the gray mono.  They really do these right and frankly I don't know how any of these humungous box sets can make money - they press a certain number and never re-press, which is why even a year later some quadruple in value, which I think will happen to the Walter set in about a year.  And clearly, speculators are purchasing extras because the ones that are priced highest are still sealed.  But getting the original jacket art and liner notes, a huge hardcover book, sturdy packaging, full color labels - and then selling it so that the CDs average about 2.50 per CD or less is just amazing to me.  Then again, Sony owns their own pressing plants so that lessens those costs and they also own the recordings, so it's just a question of remastering.

Mozart with an M.  I wish I knew how to like his music better.  Certainly, when it's a great conductor like Munch or Walter or Toscanini it goes down easier, and I like a couple of the famous tunes, but in the end they just don't "get" to me.  And yet, I like Bach.  Go know.

Don’t miss it if you can!

Is it the work, or the cast that is turning everyone off?
