Well, you've read the notes, you've bloomin' 'ad it up to 'ere with the notes, and now it is time for you to post until the bloomin' bleedin' cows come home, which ain't bloody likely if you asks the likes of me, ducky.
-
Good Morning!
First Post!
HUZZAH!!
-
And the word of the day is: STREUSEL!
-
Don't remember who crashdilly is, but whoever it is, a very happy birthday from haineshisway.com.
STREUSEL, baby, STREUSEL!
-
Has anyone seen Jessica Skerritt?
-
Good Morning! (once again)
We got threw a few more boxes - emphasis on "few" and note "more" - then settled in on his comfy couch to watch Letterman. -Kristin Chenoweth was fun, and she ended up singing a bit of "Here You Come Again" to demonstrate her Dolly Parton impression. Nice, but it would have been nice to hear her sing something from her new album. But since the musical guest tonight was Ludacris... Well... And Dave mentioned that he thought she was already doing her Dolly Parton impression from the way she was dressed.
;D
Tomorrow will be kitchen day, and I'll be heading over around Noon to help out again. Remember, each box I unpack is a box I get to take with me!
;)
-
There are only two versions of Here You Come Again that are worth listening to: Dolly's original, and Miss Alice Ripley and Mr. Guy Haines' version.
-
Hmmm.... STREUSEL...
Apple, Cherry, Nut, Poppy Seed... Oh, even Cabbage - yes, Cabbage - which is actually very good and more traditional than one would think. Oh, nevermind, that's streDel... Oops... Close, but no cigar.
So, as for STREUSEL... How can you go wrong when you combine butter, sugar (white and/or brown), cinnamon, nutmeg, and nuts; and then bake them up to crunchy goodness on top of a coffee cake, loaf bread, muffin or pastry!
-
STREUSEL???
All I have to say is swirl!
-
And what am I doing up this early talking about food????
I went to be at my usual hour. Dreamed of eating something crunchy and woke up. Is there something Freudian about this?
-
Was your pillow gone?
-
I want to have the exact same dream I had last night. I'd like to have it every night.
-
As for British play, films and musicals...
Well, right off the top of my head at this time of morning...
John Osborne's Look Back in Anger
Michael Frayn's Noises Off
Most of the Merchant-Ivory films with special affection for "Maurice", "A Room With A View" and "A Passage to India"
"Cold Comfort Farm"
Evita
Blood Brothers
Me and My Girl
Plus many other ones I know I'm forgetting right now...
-I can't wait to see DR Pogue's list. :)
-
Well, that was worth waiting for, even though it wasn't Ms. Skerritt. Making the children smile, that's what its all about! Way to go, BK.
Britshows: "Salad Days" which I directed a couple years back. Totally nutty show with enjoyable tunes by Julian Slade. Another I'd LIKE to do is "Zip Goes A Million" which was a musical of "Brewster's Millions" written for George Formby in the 50s.
-
OH!...
And once I got back to my place, I decided to go ahead and cut my hair. Not bad, and I made good time too! And I'm pretty sure I lost about three pounds in hair!
-
Cor Blimey! What a broad topic. I'll start with British films:
THIEF OF BAGHDAD
GREAT EXPECTATIONS
KIND HEARTS & CORONETS
HOBSON'S CHOICE
TUNES OF GLORY
ZULU
THE GO-BETWEEN
But, God, there are so many more...I'll have to sleep on the plays...
-
Films that spring to mind:
Psychomania
These Are the Damned
Kes
The Ruling Class
-
All things Brit:
Musicals - Passion Flower Hotel, Robert and Elizabeth, The Boy Friend, Oliver, Stop the World - I Want to Get Off, Twang (guilty pleasure), Maggie May.
Plays: A Taste of Honey, An Inspector Calls, Sleuth, Equus, Rattle of a Simple Man (guilty pleasure), Bedroom Farce.
Films: Tom Jones, Dead of Night, A Matter of Life and Death, Black Narcissus, The Mind Benders (guilty pleasure), Victim, A Hard Day's Night, The Family Way, the Quatermass trilogy, Curse of the Demon, The Ladykillers.
-
Now I'm going to bed.
Say, BK, maybe you should update the copyright date at the bottom of the page?
-
I tried to sleep on some plays once - very uncomfortable.
Frankly, I'd like to hear Jessica Skerritt's choices, wouldn't you?
-
Updating is the province of Mr. Mark Bakalor and he's a very busy lad these days.
-
More:
Films - Carry on Cleo, The Third Man, Odd Man Out, Expresso Bongo.
-
Brit films: Carry On.....
Musicals: My Fair Lady (does this count?)
The Ruling Class a truly bizarre and wonderful film
The Lion In Winter
The above two have wonderful performances by Peter O'Toole
It is a shame that a lot of the Korda films have fallen into public domain and the copies circulating are so awful.
Many of the 50/60's comedies with Peter Sellers and Alec Guiness
Ealing? too tired to look up
The Red Shoes
I am sure there are others. Usually the small quiet dramas that are done so well.
Some of the Hammer, Amicus Horror films of the fifties.
And even the bizarre stylings of Ken Russell from Women in Love to The Boyfriend to The Devils to The Music Lovers
-
Our Man In Havana
-
And Brit TV, too.
-
Film: Lawrence of Arabia
Play: The Norman Conquests, Private Lives
Musical: The Card.
There are many more but also many more DRs to post!
-
Updating is the province of Mr. Mark Bakalor and he's a very busy lad these days.
is Mr. Bakalor in Canada now?
-
Brit TV. The amazing Dennis Potter catalogue and the wonderful work of Stephen Poliakov.
-
is Mr. Bakalor in Canada now?
:)
-
Well I must try and go back to sleep again. I will list more later. I am sure people will post many more between now and then time I wake again.
-
And one more thing: Elmoore did the wonderful orchestras for the three songs from Ballroom on the Lost In Boston IV with the sublime Karen Morrow who IMHO gives one of the most outstanding performances on any of BK produced albums with Who Gave You Permission.
I am sure the BK might have some stories about that session.
-
OKAY PAGE TWO DANCE!!!!
(Dance of the Hours)
-
Now to bed
-
4:30 AM... YIKES! Must be the haircut!
;)
-
4:45AM EDT....
:-\
-
5:00AM EDT...
Hmm....
-
"At the tone, the time will be...
Time for Jose to get to bed."
Goodnight.
-
Good morning, all! I'm a little groggy, but I'm about to head over to B&N to face whatever triumphs and humiliations it throws my way.
Thank you all for the positive vibes for my sister-in-law Donna. I'm sure they're helping her.
Todays's topic is a huge one, and since I'm an Anglophile, I've got way too many choices: my favorite plays are Restoration and 18th Century, particularly SHE STOOPS TO CONQUER and THE COUNTRY WIFE, and comedies by Oscar Wide, Joe Orton, Noel.
Favorite author: Jane Austen.
British composers: Arthur Sullivan, Ralph Vaughan Williams, Benjamin Britten (who did an amazing version of the 18th Century BEGGAR'S OPERA).
Musicals: The Arcadians, Bless the Bride, Salad Days, The Boy Friend, Half a Sixpence, Bittersweet.
Films: Kind Hearts & Coronets, The Ladykillers, Thief of Bagdad, Blithe Spirit, Great Expectations, Georgy Girl, Tom Jones, The Beggar's Opera, The Long Good Friday, Alfy, Hard Day's Night, Help!
There are too many choices! I'm suffering from overload.
-
Just got back from the Relay for Life. It's only it's second year here at Ball State. Last year they raised $5,000 and this year we raised $13,000! I didn't actually run for our team, but I provided the tent, found a four part a cappella song to sing during the vigil with three of my friends (I was told it brough tears to people's eyes), and just cheered everyone on. One of my friends from church here is head honcho so many of us helped in many different ways. I puttered out about 4:00 AM and slept until 6:30. The funniest by far was the Miss Relay for Life competition. (Guys dressed in drag.) It was bad, but we did have one person come who is participating in the drag show this evening put on by Spectrum. She ended up getting the most donations around campus thus winning the title.
I'm getting a shower. Then, it is time forme to sleep as I have a retreat starting at 4:30 tonight. Busy, busy weekend! I'll try to post some this afternoon.
-
Favorite British film by a mile is THE THIRD MAN. In fact, it ranks near the very top of my all-time favorite list.
Favorite British musical would have to be OLIVER! Love the score, and the film version of it ranks pretty high, too.
Favorite British play would probably be NOISES OFF.
-
Haven't seen LULLABY OF BROADWAY in a long, long time, but I remember being astounded with Doris' dancing in the finale to the picture.
She started out as a dancer but a childhood car accident made her switch to singing, but in this film, I think she outdid herself in the dancing department. I don't remember much else about it frankly. Will look forward to seeing it again once the Doris DVD set is made available to us.
I've always had a soft spot for YOUNG MAN WITH A HORN. The LP was always one of my most played Doris records.
-
Yep, a lot of those Ealing comedies are just unmatched in wit and sophistication. I really do love KIND HEARTS & CORONETS, too. It was one of the first movies I ever taped when I got my first VCR back in the 1970s, and I watched it all the time once I had a copy of it.
-
Good morning all! I'm up (I think). I'm sorry I pooped out on you last night. I just couldn't hold my eyes open any longer. I slept the whole night away but I feel better for it. :)
DR Michael-I LOVE the page 2 dance! What was that from?
I have to go and get the dirt and bucket today for my lemon tree. I received an e-mail that it is on it's way! I'm sure it will just be a twig when it arrives but I will take pictures.
I know that I'm out of the loop again. It will take time for me to catch up. I tried to pop by and at least read here and there but you know how that is.
I'm sorry I missed all the Errol Flynn talk! I didn't even get to watch any of his movies this week. :( I can't wait to get the collection!
I don't know if it's been asked but how are the gas prices your way? Our "cheep" gas is at $2.19 but you have to go to a gas station called Race Track to get it. The prices go way up from there.
I'm lucky that there is a Race Track across from Walmart. Since I don't drive that much, a tank of gas lasts me a good month to a month and a half or longer. At least that is the way it is now. If the bus route gets changed, well, I think you know.
Still it was a real shockaroo the first time I had to fill Bonnie and it came to $37.00! And that was for three quarters of a tank!
I always consider the tank on empty when it hits a quarter of a tank. That's because my dad told me that if I ever got into trouble to call him but if I ever called him because I had run out of gas, I had better learn to walk to get it. He was NOT going bring it to me. Needless to say, I have NEVER run out of gas!
-
I really like the story about your song "Annie", dear BK.
Thank you for sharing the story and the reprint of the said mother’s email you received. And I always admire your kindness to everybody who needs your help. :)
-
Good morning! It's a beautiful Saturday here in SW Ohio and DR Richard and I are off to a benefit lunch for Newspapers in Education at Outback Steakhouse.
DR Danise - You've been missed here! Our gas prices range from 2.08-2.30. I try to fill up whenever I see it below 2.20.
bk - A lovely story about Caitlynne.
-
And Brit TV, too.
Like Doctor Who!
-
Tom Stoppard and Alan Ayckbourn. Particularly for Arcadia and Henceforward, respectively.
And Caryl Churchill for Cloud Nine.
-
Good Morning!
I'm up! I'm up!
-Did I really cut my hair at 1:00AM last night?
Hmmm.... <rubs head>.... Guess so.
;)
-
I know we talked about the other day, but it's related to Today's Topic...
Were there really only 12 episodes of "Fawlty Towers"? I just remember it being a staple on PBS stations for years. Did they really just show the same 12 episodes over and over again?
Same thing goes for "Monty Python's Flying Circus".
Talk about reruns!
-
RE: Gas prices
There's a mini-price war going on in sort of nearby Ladysmith, Virginia. -Which happens to be conveniently located right off of I-95.
I believe the combatants are a Shell station and some independent station. One has a convenience store, and one does not - I forget which has which, but... In any case...
In the spirit of "friendly" competition, one of the station owners started lowering his price for his regular gas by a penny - a penny under what his neighbor across the street was offering their gas for. And then the guy across the street would match it for a few days, then lower his price by another penny. And so on, and so on, and so on.
As of last night's news cast, the current prices were $1.92 and $1.93! Which happens to be under the current cost for the gas station owner! (Well, the independent guy at least.) Basically, they've lowered the price to the "before taxes" price. And they've also attracted some media attention and business.
So, when I drive up to Fairfax tomorrow or Monday, I shall just put a gallon or two in my tank here in Richmond, and then once I get to Ladysmith, I shall fill up my tank. And that should last me the round trip.
:)
-
DR Joey - Congrats! And rest well.
-
DR Danise - I hope you get some rest this weekend too.
-
Yesterday was a zoo, or something like one.
We were out of the house shortly after six in the morning, to ladsit while their parents went to a conference with the boys' teachers. Everything was fine, but der B decided we should take Peggy and Fletcher with us. There's a battle brewing between der B and his son-in-law regarding our love of dogs, because son-in-law hates them (and I think everyone here knows I don't use that word lightly).
But the lads loved seeing Fletcher again, and meeting Peggy. And we played, and we had pizza for lunch, and everyone got way too tired but only the dogs had sense enough to want to take naps.
I said it was sort of like a zoo. Zoos can be fun.
But that's where we were yesterday.
-
Just stoppin back in for a moment. Took the dogs to check the morning pee mail. Still have to make the grocery run.
I just read notes (I know I'm a BAAAD girl!) and have to say that was very nice of you, BK! I'll look forward to hearing the sound clip--please forgive me if I miss it at first because with as busy as I have been(and there is no let up in sight--sigh), I'm missing out on a lot of things!
I wish I could get the stupid "free" internet access that is advertised to be in downtown Tampa to work. I might be able to use the new laptop to get a post or two in on my lunch break.
Thank you, DR Ginny. I have missed you all as well. Hard to think that last month at this time we were all in the "going to NYC" mode. Well, it IS only 6 more months until October! ;)
Gotta run--be back laters!
-
Before I go...
Thanks, DR Jose. I sure do need it!
Wow, you DO have some low gas prices.
As for British TV--anyone remember "The Goodies"? And "Chef"? I LOVED those shows--"DR Who" is a must as well. Tom Baker was my favorite doctor. I also loved K9.
Laters!
-
We got home in time for the Rehoboth Beach Food and Wine Festival, Day One.
It's not being very well run this year. The emphasis is on food, but this means you pick a restaurant and dine there with matching wine selections. I preferred last year, where they had a bunch of vintners come to town to introduce their wares. The Purple Parrot was having a wine tasting, however, and we had fun there.
Afterwards, we headed over to Partners Bistro again. Der Brucer has loaned Matthew, their piano player/singer, a huge stack of piano playbooks, some of them hard to find, particularly in our area. Matthew has been very appreciative.
It's nice to have a day off today!
-
OK - Time for me to get ready for more packing and moving around of boxes and boxes and boxes. And popping those bubble-wrap bubbles!
Laters...
-
On This Day in 1941: The original Elsie the Cow died. Elsie the cow was originally a cartoon character appearing in ads for Borden Milk. At the 1939 New York World's Fair, when people began asking where Elsie was, Borden's picked a cow originally named 'You'll do Lobelia' from their herd to be Elsie. Elsie stared in commercials, made personal appearances, and even starred in an RKO movie, 'Little Men.' Elsie was injured in a truck accident in 1941 and had to be put to sleep. She is buried in Plainsboro, New Jersey.

A few more films: Passport to Pimlico, Carry On, Cleo, Alistair Sim's Christmas Carol, In Which We Serve, Ruling Class, Conduct Unbecoming...
-
What wonderful news about Caitlynne and "Annie" - it is a very nice song, and must have come as a surprise to the judges! Good performance vibes to her for the "showcase" tonight!
-
So many wonderful Brit stuff has been mentioned...I will try not to duplicate, although it will be difficult.
My first one is, of course, also a choice by someone else:
Movie - THE RED SHOES and I will also add the perverse PEEPING TOM. And to those I will add THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST and EXPRESSO BONGO and THE YOUNG ONES.
Musicals - hmmmmm OLIVER! and BLOOD BROTHERS.
Plays - HENRY V and A CHORUS OF DISAPPROVAL by Alyn Ayckbourn. And ARMS AND THE MAN and PYGMALION.
-
TV: The Bretts, Poldark, By the Sword Divided, The Avengers, Blackadder, No...Honestly, Good Neighbours, The Sins, Men Behaving Badly, Six Wives of Henry VIII, Elizabeth R, Rumpole of the Bailey, Jeremy Brett's Sherlock Holmes series
-
Couple more plays: Volpone, Peter Pan
-
Page Three Expresso Bongo Dance. ;D
-
I'm up, I'm up.
Re, the Karen Morrow/Who Gave You Permission session: Karen is not that comfortable in the studio, so we did a few takes to get her comfortable, and I gave her a few little notes, and then she just nailed it in one or two takes, and I mean nailed it. When she began, she was just trying to sing it - by the end, she was inhabiting the song, which is all you ever want.
-
Congrats to DRJOEY and friends on their Relay for Life contributions!
-
Nice review this morning for the play - even though the Macarena wasn't mentioned! ;D

Can you believe I'm actually out of futon before noon on a Saturday? What is this world coming to? I am eating a nice healthy breakfast of Hershey kisses, cole slaw, and a Cherry Coke.
Final exam and term paper season has started, so I'm trying to get some History done today. And then I get to start on my Rhetoric paper.
I know it's not Ask BK day, but does anybody have any good ideas about what to write a Rhetoric paper on?? I'll take bad ideas too if there aren't any good ones.
I'm also signed up for summer school. Two hours and ten minutes a day in another History class. How excited am I?
-
My favorite British TV show is Red Dwarf, but the local PBS station quit showing the reruns, so I haven't seen it in a long time. I also watch Keeping Up Appearances. One time, my brother answered the phone with "The Boo-kay residence, the lady of the house speaking," and I laughed so hard Cherry Coke came out of my nose.
-
My idea would be to write a rhetoric paper on the subject of rhetoric.
Of course, if I were writing said paper, the entire paper would be about why anyone felt the need to stick that useless "h" in the word rhetoric.
-
It is Betsy's and my anniversary today. We will be journeying to the coast with the kids for a few days so I shall be E&T unless I can log on at an internet cafe.
I awoke to find a two page review of the Showtime Reefer in the Oregonian. I found this somewhat ironic, as when our version was in development here, the Oregonian refused to use the term "Reefer Madness" in our ads for casting, and then (by coinkydink? I think not) published the wrong venue and/or performance times repeatedly once we had opened. I fired off a letter to them this morning to that effect. My collaborator is convinced that the other version has appropriated large portions of our adaptation, but I have not seen it, so I can't speak to that. This has been a very frustrating situation, but I have joked for some time that I am now in the Maury Yeston/Andrew Lippa club for life. This is what has made me intent on protecting my authorship rights on any other things I've written--I now have an attorney who is a bulldog. Arf. ;D
-
Well, then, you'll be happy to know that the cable movie has garnered some of the worst reviews in the history of cable. And why not? I saw it the week it opened in LA and it was not good then, and I can't imagine it was good in NY, hence why should it be good as a cable movie? How did it get made? Well, let's just say that someone high up was having a liason with someone involved in the property. And so it goes.
-
And you'd BETTER find an Internet cafe.
-
I find this such a pleasant way to spend a Saturday morning - looking out the window at a beautiful day, whilst hanging out at haineshisway.com with a Diet Coke by my side and the singing bird in the yard doing its rendition of Coco.
-
All these gas prices mentioned so far actually don't seem too bad to us west coast types. The cheap stuff here in Tacoma is currently around $2.37.
All things British? First stage stuff that jumped to mind was Sleuth, Noises Off, and Stop the World - I Want to Get Off. As for TV, Fawlty Towers is certainly wonderful, and I also rather enjoy Keeping Up Appearances starring Patricia Routledge.
-
Congrats to Betsy and JMK on their anniversary!
-
Matthew Bourne, Brit choreographer!
-
We are at $2.13 here in Indiana.
-
I may actually go out, so beautiful is this day.
-
OK, enough of this lollygagging. I am going to DO MY HOMEWORK!
-
$2.39 in Tigard, where I mostly work. $2.45 in Portland proper. Of course, Oregon is one of only two states that bans self-service, so part our expense is overhead for the slack-jawed ape-person who fills your tank. ;)
-
Plays:
SLEUTH
NOISES OFF
Films:
THE INNOCENTS
THE LION IN WINTER
Musicals:
ROAR OF THE GREASEPAINT, SMELL OF THE CROWD
OLIVER
-
Today's mail brought the renewal for the Broadway tours. I am disappointed. Three of the seven shows they have already brought through.
Moving Out (not interested)
Annie (repeat)
Evita (repeat)
Swan Lake (not particularly interested)
Golda's Balcony
Joseph... Dreamcoat (repeat)
Wicked
-
JMK, I am quite pleased the Oregon hasn't gone to self serve gas!
When I was in Washington last weekend we had to fill up the car and it was such a pain! LOL! I hated it! I much prefer to stay put in my car and have the slack jawed gas jockey take my debit card and "fill 'er up"!
And the gas in Washington wasn't any cheaper then here..which isn't saying much!
-
For the most part I am not a big fan of British films, but of those that I do like:
WHISTLE DOWN THE WIND
DAY OF THE TRIFFIDS
PHANTOM OF THE OPERA (1962 Hammer version)
TV:
ARE YOU BEING SERVED
STINGRAY
THUNDERBIRDS
-
CONGRATULATIONS TO JMK!
and obviously
COURAGE AND PATIENCE TO BETSY!
-
I'm back from a little jaunt in my motor car on this beauticious day. I'm heating the pool and should be safely therin in about an hour or two.
-
Two more plays:
PRESENT LAUGHTER
PACK OF LIES
-
Bruce, such a lovely story with a happy ending. :D
Michael Shayne, darling page two dance.
JMK and Betsy HAPPY ANNIVERSARY!
-
Congratulations to JMK and Betsy!!
-
And one for Mahler.
-
We have quite a large quorum on the forum so why don't some of the quorum actually post something instead of just sitting there like so much fish?
Other Brit plays I like: Private Lives, Blithe Spirit, Beyond the Fringe (a revue, but still), The Importance of Being Ernest.
-

I agree. I like having the tank filled for me, even paid for it when I had a choice. The smell of gas really makes me sick.
Gas prices are also higher in California so I’m not sure our laws make a difference in the cost.
Last I checked gas here is between $2.49 (Arco) and $2.57 (where we go). I will look check the prices while I’m out today. That is the cost of regular and my car requires premium.
-
Of course Roar of the Greasepaint, while written by Brits, is not a Brit musical - it premiered on Broadway, and I don't know that it's ever played the UK in a first-class production.
-
Back from the NIE benefit and a nap and ;D I got a package today! DR George sent me CDs of bk's appearances on The Broadway Radio Show and 2 on the Dial. Thank you so much, George. So, now I'm hanging out here at HHW, drinking lightly flavored sparkling water, and listening to these delightful programs.
-
About six years ago (during the last century) I had to have several disks in my neck fused due to cervical disk disease. This was at the same time as my last long-term relationship, which I now believe was God's way of telling me that that lulu was a real pain in the neck.
Since recovering from the surgery, I have not had any pain in my neck, except for the occasional morning slept wrong feeling. That is, until last night, while watching TV, when I turned wrong and instantly got a shock of electricity running down my neck and into my shoulders. Since that moment I have been in agony. Every wrong move of my head (standing up, sitting down, or in bed) brings awful pain. Tylenol doesn’t help (it isn’t an anti-inflammatory), but it is the only thing I can take for pain. I really do not need this right now. The last time, I had the surgery, I wasn't even allowed to ride in a car for six weeks!
-
At the moment the only addition I can think of for today’s topic is the series ALL CREATURES GREAT AND SMALL.
Has anyone seen JEEVES AND WOOSTER with Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie? Thanks to my brother it is now on our Netflix queue.
-
TCB-GOOD, SPEEDY HEALTH VIBES AND TO NO MORE PAIN!
-
DR TCB, can you get to an emergency room? Maybe they could give you muscle relaxants.
-
Off to check the gas prices.
-
Feel Good Vibes to Buffalo Bill TCB.
-
I hate muscle relaxants. What about an ice pack-or a bag of frozen peas as they are more gentle than ice.
-
DRLAURA - I know how you feel. A few years ago, after many years, I gave up my subscription series tickets. I buy individual tickets for shows I want to see.
The last year, there were two substitutions, and then of course there was a change to TWO venues, some shows at Clowes and some shows at the Murat (which really is a substandard venue for Broadway shows, cupholders on the seats, bring in your drink, walk in and out when you like).....
Beautiful weather here, dRGINNY headed your way!
-
Just watched an interesting show on CMT - Popularity Contest. A bunch of outsiders have been trucked into Vega, Texas, and have to spend their time getting the locals to like them. At the end of a week, the locals vote, and one of the outsiders goes home.
The Texans are very secure in their environment, and the outsiders all try to fit in, in various ways. Pretty funny stuff - for "reality" type programming.
-
Best wishes to JMK and Betsy.. I think that lawyer was a friend of mine. We used to drink wine together.
Best of warmest relaxing thoughts to TCB. Can you buy "over-the-counter" non prescription drugs that contain doxylamine. (Mersyndol my brand of choice)?
-
DR TCB - Sorry you're in pain, feel better soon.
-
Of course Roar of the Greasepaint, while written by Brits, is not a Brit musical - it premiered on Broadway, and I don't know that it's ever played the UK in a first-class production.
Sorry, I had read that David Merrick saw the show in Manchester, where it closed out of town before getting to London, but that he brought it to America anyway.
-
Beautiful weather here, dRGINNY headed your way!
You mean it'll get even BETTER? Thanks for the forecast, DR JRand.
-
[move=left,scroll,6,transparent,100%]'appy Bloomin' Hanniversary to DR JMK and DW Betsy![/move]

Not quite at the coast yet. :) Thanks to all for the good wishes. TCB, you have made Betsy's day. Quoth she: "How did he know?" ;D And feel better--I've never had surgery, but I have a notoriously quirky back and neck that go out at the strangest times and I know the intense pain that can bring.
-
What, cor? Yer mean ta tell me that no un 'ere 'as yet ta mention that absolutely fab flick, Smashing Time, starrin' the ever luvly Lynn Redgrave and that groovy Rita Tushingham chick?

Happy Anniversary to DR JMK and his DW Betsy!

Well, as it made both of our lists... I think we found our next show to do, Dad!

OKAY PAGE TWO DANCE!!!!

(Dance of the Hours)
Fantasia, yes, but Beethoven's Pastorale, Michael!
That dreadful hotel fire here has killed 21 people.... so far, because some burnt people are in critical condition, as they say! So sad!

Weather is also dreadful here; it feels like autumn! Wind, rain and cold!
That's it! Brilliant!`
WIND, RAIN and COLD ..... title of my next novel! ;)

Look on the bright side, TCB. Maybe they'll offer you a buy one, get one free for hip and neck operations.
-
Good Afternoon!
Greetings from Steve's new place...
Best of Health Vibes to DR TCB!
Happy Anniversary to DR JMK and Betsy.
...I should start helping out... Especially if I want another free dinner tonight!
-It's all about the food. Always.
:D
Laters...

Jane, The Fry/Laurie JEEVES & WOOSTERs are great!
-
Couple more plays: London Cuckolds and Old Masters.
-
Has anyone seen JEEVES AND WOOSTER with Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie? Thanks to my brother it is now on our Netflix queue.
DRJane, I loved Fry and Laurie as Jeeves and Wooster. Very funny.
How could I have forgotten the great Brit film THE INNOCENTS? Perhaps because it's not on DVD?
-
DRTCB, would a chiropractor help? When I had my leg problem last August, the muscle relaxers were so powerful that I could have danced SWAN LAKE on them. Of course when they wore off, I couldn't stand. Thank God it's passed.
If the pain continues, hie thee to an ER, but not the one on tv: you'll be shot, beat up, stabbed, or perhaps a helicopter might fall on you.
-
TCB, that doesn't sound right to me - I'm pretty positive it was comissioned by Merrick and that it began here. Anyone else have any info? I'll see if there's anything about it in my Newley bio.
-
Oh, yes, SLEUTH definitely and also PRIVATE LIVES.
-
I re-watched THERE'S NO BUSINESS LIKE SHOW BUSINESS this morning. After it went off, I put on PAINT YOUR WAGON which is my first time viewing on DVD. They found a beautiful copy of the film for the DVD master. It's looks very sharp and with very accurate color (a lot of mud color!) And the sound contains quite a bit of bass for a film this old. Only got about an hour in, but it's enjoyable to see this after all these years. I don't think I've seen it since I saw it at the theater.
-
SMASHING TIME!! Oh my. Lynn and Rita can't pay their London lunch tab, so Lynn says to Rita:
"You stay here eating, I'll go downtown and get a modeling job and an apartment and be right back!"
-
TCB, that doesn't sound right to me - I'm pretty positive it was comissioned by Merrick and that it began here. Anyone else have any info? I'll see if there's anything about it in my Newley bio.
Here's what Peter Filichia says in his book:
"The 1965 production had already been produced for London but shuttered during tryouts. The authors went back to work and mounted it for America."
-
Brit films of more recent vintage:
"Secrets and Lies" and "Priest".
-
Happy Anniversary to DR JMK and Betsy!
Feel better vibes to DR TCB !~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
-
Of course Roar of the Greasepaint, while written by Brits, is not a Brit musical - it premiered on Broadway, and I don't know that it's ever played the UK in a first-class production.
It closed out of town in England. Norman Wisdom was the star
I guess I was the second person to post about this.
See pages 310-311 in the bio of David Merrick. Merrick saw it Liverpool.
-
My references say a 4 month tour of Greasepaint in the UK provinces and the show not considered worthy of a West End production.. Then Newley replaced Norman Wisdom and a few months tour of the USA and Canada before Broadway.
-
JMK and I would no doubt rather discuss the wonderful (score!) of "The Good Old Bad Old Days". The show was a lot of fun too.
-
Apologies to TCB for my incorrect info.
-
I guess that Greaspaint being considered not Brit makes "I & Albert" British.
-
OOOH!. I've lost a post. I mentioned something about "Walking Happy" and "The Good Companions" but who really cares? LOL
-
Just got back from the Relay for Life. She ended up getting the most donations around campus thus winning the title....
Joey, I'm a team for the Relay for Life, also! We have a team at work and our event this year is June 24-25. Last year, our team raised almost $3,000 but in the past (when we had more people on our team) we've raised as much as $5,000 in a year. Congratulations to you and your team!
-
I don't know if it's been asked but how are the gas prices your way?
I got gas at Tumwater's Costo last week for $2.339 a gallon. I had heard that at one place somewhere in Seattle, the price jumped to over $3.00 a gallon!! That's price gouging, if you ask me! Otherwise, around here the average (so far) has been between $2.30-$2.50.
-
Back to yesterday!! This morning I have been listening to "That's All" - the Bobby Darin album of 1959. Truly great.
-
OOOH!. I've lost a post. I mentioned something about "Walking Happy" and "The Good Companions" but who really cares? LOL
Well.... little me for example, who like to walk happy with good companions!
Now, are we supposed to list the ones we really like or all the ones we know and/or know of????
That listing thing always seems such a "competition" between us kimlets! It's fun but seems so useless to this French pup...
Oh well, at least it has us posting which has to be one of the reasons for us "being here"!
One thing I'm sure of, Greasepaint never originated in France!!
-
JMK, I am quite pleased the Oregon hasn't gone to self serve gas!
When I was in Washington last weekend we had to fill up the car and it was such a pain! LOL! I hated it!
Wimp! ;)
I much prefer to stay put in my car and have the slack jawed gas jockey take my debit card and "fill 'er up"!
Oh...by all means, enjoy the view! ;D
-
Last week petrol was costing us $A4.70 per gallon!
-
It is Betsy's and my anniversary today.
HAPPY ANNIVERSARY!!
-
About six years ago (during the last century) I had to have several disks in my neck fused due to cervical disk disease.

Irma La Douce was of course British. Perhaps it was really for the poor people of Paris. Of course I am just attempting humour here. François will no doubt "see" the reference.
-
And as for the Topic of the Day:
Plays:
Arcadia
The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby
Noises Off
Movies:
The Commitments
The Crying Game
The Full Monty
Maurice
A Room With A View
Scrooge
Musicals:
The Boy Friend
Matthew Bourne's Swan Lake (okay, it's a ballet...sue me)
Me and My Girl
Oliver!
Sweeney Todd (it's set in England...does that count?)
TV:
French & Saunders
The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy
Murder Most Horrid
So Graham Norton
-
Well, I'm all frenzied out...and I have to go shopping with my sister and let out the cats of a friend of mine who is on vacation. They're coming back tonight and I'm not sure when. I said that I'd let them out this morning, but I forgot! :-[ So, I'm off.
Oh, and I'll add The Mystery of Edwin Drood to my list. It (like Sweeney Todd) is set in England. That's good enough for me. ;D
-
I've switched from "That's All" to "What's New". Maybe I'll follow that with "Here's Love". It may be an apostrophic day.
-
Irma La Douce was of course British. Perhaps it was really for the poor people of Paris. Of course I am just attempting humour here. François will no doubt "see" the reference.
Irma La Douce was Sweet Irma, at first, and then became Sweet Charity! ;)
Your attempt at humour is a success, dear reader Tom de Savoie!
I mean, Tom de Oz! :)
-
I shall play "The Poor People of Paris" in honour of your paycheck DR François. Or maybe ABBA - Monnet Monnet Monnet.
-
I've switched from "That's All" to "What's New". Maybe I'll follow that with "Here's Love". It may be an apostrophic day.
Then Miss Lee is going to ask
"Is That All There Is?".........
While Oliver wonders "Where Is Love?"..............(oh! back to tod!)
-
I shall play "The Poor People of Paris" in honour of your paycheck DR François. Or maybe ABBA - Monnet Monnet Monnet.
Yes, his models, certainly PPP, used to sing:
"We're In The Monnet!"... and to them everything then seemed Rosie!
-
OOOH!. I've lost a post. I mentioned something about "Walking Happy" and "The Good Companions" but who really cares? LOL
DR Tomovoz - I care about Walking Happy! It played the Fisher Theatre in Detroit prior to Broadway when I was in high school. Our drama club could get tickets for $2.25 to all the shows. I remember loving Walking Happy and being so disappointed when it wasn't better received in NYC.
-
Thank you DR Ginny.. I always thought the show would have done better without Norman Wisdom. I am fond of the Film "Hobson's Choice". (I've not seen the play upon which it was based).
-
Great UK book, play, film and musical "Billy Liar" ("Billy").
-
I'm just taking a break from my History homework. We're reading a very long book about the plague. Very cheerful and uplifting.
-
I heard there was an earthquake in CA! Is everyone ok?
Dear TCB, please go and seek medical help for your neck. Don't be like my Mom who is sitting here in pain but won't let me take her to the doctor. I know people don't like doctors but it makes it hard on the people who care for them to sit and not be able to do anything for them.
DR François, I'm glad to see you posting as well. I was right, wasn't I? You work at Disney?
-
Earthquake? Not that I felt.

Ah! the Plague.. Greek mythology was it? Jason and the Golden Fleas. And the source material for the film "A Flea in Her Ear" . Rats! I may have that all wrong.
-
I heard there was an earthquake in CA! Is everyone ok?
It looks like a 5 on the Richter was centered south of Bakersfield. I don't think any of our crew is centered anywhere near Bakersfield. (People I used to know that were from Bakersfield were never that centered, anyhow. ::))
Quake mapping here. (http://quake.wr.usgs.gov/recent/index.html)

CP and elmore thanks. Now I’m really looking forward to the JEEVES series. Bryan gave me one of the books to read and my brother raved about the series after I had him watch HOUSE. If I’m lucky we will have the DVD waiting for us when we return from Portland.
-
In case François doe not get back!!! DR Danise : No he doesn't! He is a night auditor as a "boutique" Parisian hotel.
-
Oh. Somehow I thought he worked at EuroDisney.
While I was out and about today, I saw some software that lets you record radio programs off of the internet.
I also found an old video game that I used to love called, Crystal Castles. Now to find time to play it.
There was a Star Wars DVD with the two made for TV Ewok movies so I picked that up as well. I have never been able to find the Star Wars Christmas special but I'm sure it will come out someday.
-
Danise he did work for Disney at one time. I thought it was the one near you.
-
On my way to the screening - suprise change of plans. Keep the home fries burning until my returning.
-
The next musical on our calendar is the touring The Producers, which opens at the Schuster Center in Dayton this Wednesday. We're taking my mom to the matinee on May 1 as her Christmas present. I read in yesterday's Dayton Daily News the following casting:
Bialystock - Bob Amaral
Bloom - Andy Taylor
Any connections here?
-
DR François, I'm glad to see you posting as well. I was right, wasn't I? You work at Disney?
I used to, Danise, used to!
I "gave" six full years of my life to The Big Cheese, from 1984 through 1990! Lived in Kissimmee! You know.... the place they sing about!!
Kissimmee once, And Kissimmee twice
And Kissimmee once again!
It's been a long, long time! ;)
Now, I work here:
http://www.hoteldanube.fr/
... and boy, is Mickey really sad I don't work for him anymore!
I tell you that!
But, hey!... there's LIFE after Walt Disney World!!
(That's what Roy Disney Jr also says these days about The Walt Disney Company!
:D)
Thanks for caring, Danise! :-*
-
Ginny do you mean a late Christmas present or an early Mother's Day gift?
-
There was a Star Wars DVD with the two made for TV Ewok movies so I picked that up as well. I have never been able to find the Star Wars Christmas special but I'm sure it will come out someday.
Don't be so sure of the Holiday Special, Danise. George Lucas reportedly tried to buy...and destroy...every copy of the show, but the bootlegging got out of hand.
-
Ginny do you mean a late Christmas present or an early Mother's Day gift?
Jane, we gave Mom her ticket and a cassette of the show for Christmas. Of course, I also had to buy tickets for myself and DH Richard! My sister's family sent Mom money for Christmas to take the 3 of us out to dinner after the show.
I do have an idea for Mother's Day, too!
-
Oooohhhh.... I can tell that some DR Kimlet friends have done good PR for me!
Thank you, lady and gent!
You had it all korrect!
I was once a... cast member, oh yes! You know, one of those people who smile all the time and are quite helpful and friendly with the guests and give the Disney Parks such a good reputation?!
Well, at least in the US, because here, with our French causticity, (Disney) cast members are looked upon as phony dumb dorks!
It has to be... cultural, I guess!
PHONY DUMB DORK... is the title of the account of "my life as a cast member at WDW" to be released in the fall!!!
-
François, now I have the facts I can say goodnight. :)
-
The facts, mam', just the facts!
Goodnight, Jane!
-
So sad to be a loon here tonight! LOL! -- to quote DR MBarnum! --
Blimey, where are all the other blokes?!
-
DR FRANCOIS - former poster DR EVIL KURT also worked as a character at WDW around that time....I wonder if your sentences overlapped?
-
Hugh Laurie is such a wonderful actor. I stumbled across Kenneth Branagh's PETER'S FRIENDS the other day. I saw it years ago but not any since then, and I didn't even remember he (Hugh) was in it. Anyway, he's talking in his regular British accented voice, and it is simply WORLDS away from the convincing American accent he uses in HOUSE.
-
I generally like ENTERPRISE, but last night's show has to set some kind of record for bone-headed writing. They have these three alien women who are able to rouse the men's chemical natures and make them do their bidding. Once the Enterprise officers realize how powerful the women are, they lock them in the brig WITH A MALE GUARD ON DUTY, and later they are surprised when the aliens get out and try to take over the ship!
-
Good Evening!
Back from Steve's. The kitchen is almost set up. There are a few boxes of stuff that still need to be put away - but there's no more room to put them away in. *He needs to do some purging too. ;)
I'll head back tomorrow, and help get his office are set up. And then take back the first batch of now-empty boxes packing material.
I stopped for some Chinese food on the way back - just wanted some Hot & Sour soup. And now I'm watching SNL - Tom what's-his-name from the Patriots is the host. So far, so not-so-bad.
;)
-

Andy Taylor is married to Alet Taylor (formerly Oury) who was in What If? as well as singing on a couple of BK-produced albums.

While walking through Carytown today, I noticed two young ladies and a young gentleman walking around. Our paths ended up crossing at some shop, where I overheard this...
Young Woman: So have you been to Carytown before?
Young Man: No, this is my first time.
Young Woman2: Do you like it so far?
Young Man: It's aight. Kind of dinky.
Young Woman: Well, it's a great place to hang out and shop.
Young Man: Yeah, I guess so. I guess it's sort of like a small version of Georgetown.
Young Woman2: You mean like Georgetown University?
Young Man: Well, sort of. It's this part of DC right near Georgetown University, but it's only for the students.
Young Woman: Oh, that's cool.
And that's when I made a beeline for the door so that I could start laughing out of their sight.
;)
-
Hmm...
Tom Brady seems to be quite the natural ham. A little awkward at times, but he's goofy. And cute. And he's been showing some skin too! Nice arms.
;D
-
British movies; I like The Lion In Winter and The Remains Of The Day, and also small films like The Full Monty and Billy Elliot.
-
It's a beautiful Sunday, in Tokyo and I hope you all will have it, too!
-
CP and elmore thanks. Now I’m really looking forward to the JEEVES series. Bryan gave me one of the books to read and my brother raved about the series after I had him watch HOUSE. If I’m lucky we will have the DVD waiting for us when we return from Portland.
DRJane, read the Wodehouse book THE SMALL BACHELOR; it's based on his and Guy Bolton's libretto for the Kern show OH, LADY! LADY! It's quite funny.
-
DR FRANCOIS - former poster DR EVIL KURT also worked as a character at WDW around that time....I wonder if your sentences overlapped?
Hummm... I don't remember any Evil Kurt -- there was a Kurt for a short time! -- posting here or parading at WDW!
Well, Tomovoz would tell you that I'm quite a character and I wish I worked as a Disney character. They are the most well paid of the hourlies, but... what a job!
It's... evil when it's hot and muggy!.... >:(
-
I went to a Reefer Madness party tonight. The movie was a hoot and Christian Campbell was in his all together (almost) and the party goers loved it. Sis Neve was also in it and dances wonderfully. All those years of Ballet training paid off. She has a wonderful extention. Allan Cummings was teriffic and the guy from the film of Jeffrey and TV series Wings Bruce Webber?? was quite good as a song and dance man.

You want Steve to become the new Karen Carpenter? No, no, bad idea! :P
-
British movies; I like The Lion In Winter and The Remains Of The Day, and also small films like The Full Monty and Billy Elliot.
DR Isaka,
I do second your choice of British movies!
Billy Elliot is to be a musical, if it is not already and I have to confess that i'm in love with Emma Thompson!!!
http://www.tmaw.co.uk/emmat.html
She's smart, witty, pretty and she speaks some mean French!
AND her birthday was 2 days ago!
Ah... that Much Ado About Nothing!!!
Let's not also forget The Magdalene Sisters!
Well, she was not in it but that movie is something!
Vera Drake..... etc.....
-
DR Isaka,
Have you ever been to Tokyo Disney Sea?
-
I'm back from a date with DRRodzinski. We went to see the York's Musicals in Mufti presentation of DARLING OF THE DAY. My friend Rebecca Luker as Alice Chalice was in peak form; funny, moving, wonderfully perfect in one of the best roles I've seen her do. My friend Simon Jones was the artist Priam Farll, my friend Stephen Mo Hannan was the artist's agent, and my friend Andrew Gerle was the musical director. Seeing the four of them after the show was one of the highlights of my week, not to mention the good time I always have with Rodzinski. We got to the lobby at the York and Rebecca's husband Danny was waiting for her. I hadn't seen him in over a year so it was too much bliss.
DRRodzinski and I went to the French Roast for a bite after the show and ran into the young actor who played Alf in the production! As Lotte Lenya says in CABARET, my head is shpinning. Good night, all!
-

:D

WORSE!
To paraphrase Professor Higgins; she would make a French sailor blush! "Ah!" ;)

It's only just past 10:30 and I'm going to bed! Tomorrow, April 17, will be my niece Hilary's 21st birthday!! We (my sister, her boyfriend Larry, my niece and I) are all going on the Spirit of Washington Dinner Train (http://www.spiritofwashingtondinnertrain.com/) for the lunch ride!! Since were taking the lunch trip, we have to leave Olympia by 9:00 a.m. or so to get there before it leaves at 11:00. I would really like to get some sleep (since Sunday is usually my only day of the week to be able to sleep), so I'm off to Wussburgerland now. Nighty-night!
-
Oh, Comedy Central is showing "South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut".... Uncut! and Uncensored!
:D
Blimey, Jose!
You're watching some porno movie again!!! ;D
-
Hello everyone! My profound apologies for being so E&T this week. Between overtime at work and doing Elijah with the Seattle Symphony , I've barely had time for sleep! I've done a quick skimming of the last few days of notes, so now I'm at least partially caught up. I'll try to do better now.
-
DR Ann, we have missed you!
-
DR MBarnum - While walking around Carytown today, I noticed that the Byrd will be showing another Bollywood movie tomorrow - Mughal-E-Azam. It's apparently a classic, and it's being re-released in a new colorized version. Looks interesting. And the website is fun too - nice use of Flash Player.
http://www.mughaleazam.com

Just finished watching 2 (two) early 1930s John Wayne B-westerns with my mom...she loves those movies as she used to go to them at the theater in her youth so many, many years ago! LOL!
Now I am caught up with todays posts and my mom is breathing down my neck because she wants to use my computer.
She heads home tomorrow, and then I can have my computer and DVD player back :D

Oh, my gosh, that would be a fun one to see! I bought the special edition DVD of that film, but have not watched it yet...I do believe it has DR JRand54's favorite Bollywood actress in it...Meena Kumari! And yes it is supposed to be one of the most classic of vintage Bollywood movies!
-
Woops, no Meena Kumari...it is Madhubala that is in that movie! Cool website!
-
François, you are in rare form tonight! Many laughs. Antonia (aka the Gal) is a "cast member" which is a term that just invites ridicule! Once, we were at Epcot and talking to some kid working in "Canada" and he was telling us rather candidly how he had to "audition" for his job. That's right, he beat out a lot of folks for the role of "guy serving funnel cake" for a summer.
-
Whirlwind evening with Elmore, who seems to know everybody. Almost got to ride in a cab with Rebecca Luker, but her husband showed up and gave her a ride. Boo. Still, she was quite nice, and she was excellent in this show that I had never heard of until Friday, "Darling of the Day". What a gem. Light-hearted and fun. Clever but not TOO clever songs. Great cast for a staged reading. According to the program, Larry Moore will be handling the 5-piece orchestrations for the show as it is re-cast and fully staged in Evanston, Ill. Any of you midwesterners who can make it to that ought to go!

Well, I guess it has now been determined that Andy and Alet are married.
Ronzinski, glad you and elmore had such a good time tonight. I want to come to New York and have some fun, too.

Might I just ask where in tarnation IS Jessica Skerritt? Damn them, damn them all to hell.

Bring it on, TCB! New York could use you.
And Elmore needs someone to help him fight the closing of the porn shops which the mayor has been back on a kick about lately.

Hello everyone! My profound apologies for being so E&T this week. Between overtime at work and doing Elijah with the Seattle Symphony , I've barely had time for sleep! I've done a quick skimming of the last few days of notes, so now I'm at least partially caught up. I'll try to do better now.
I am also doing Elijah right now. We'll be performing it on May 1. Are you playing in the orchestra or are you singing Ann?

I also must make a disclaimer on my earlier Relay for Life comments. The $5000 and $13000 were the totals for all the teams at the Ball State Relay for Life. Individual teams were much lower. I want to set up a committee to handle the details for next years relay so our team can raise quite a bit more money.
I must be off to bed. I have to be up in 6 hours! Goodnight.

It's funny how the lack of really good songwriting today causes one to adjust one's past standards. My dad used to listen to Paul Simon's "Still Crazy After All These Years" LP all the time when I was a kid, and I didn't much care for it. I put it on today, same exact copy, in fact, and the sensation overwhelmed me: who is writing songs for adults like this anymore?

Paul Simon and Randy Newman are still writing quality material. I think I'm the only one buying it though!
