Well, you've read the notes, i.e. you're done with the notes, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home, i.e. until they get here, the silly cows.

Welcome five GUESTS!  We're talkin' about anything we feel like it, for example, Jessica Skerritt.

AVUNCULAR!

I hope that hasn't already been a word of the day.

Farrelly Brothers, well... I'll admit to enjoying DUMB AND DUMBER because I liked the weird interplay between Jeff Daniels and Jim Carrey, I have generally been disappointed by their work since. Kind of an everything AND the kitchen sink mentality. The low comedy has become a formulaic thing where they have painted themselves into a corner. And their intrusive music use is definitely problematic. Well stated in the notes. The one about the conjoined twins was not too bad though. But people say their films have "heart" when what is really true is they add mawkish sentimentality to balance their grosser natures, and it rarely comes off as sincere, coherent filmmaking.

Yes, he did.

What are your favorite Oscar Mayer products?  In days of yore, the only product I ate was bologna, because my mother made  me sandwiches filled with that specious meat.  I don't eat bologna anymore.  I think I've also had their liverwurst.

Farrelly Bros.  I liked Something About Mary...that may be all I've ever seen of theirs.

I like the Cohen Bros.

The Smith Bros. make a mean cough drop...or used to...are they still around...

The Corsican Bros.  were a great double act.

Warner Bros. made great movies...

...so did the Marx Bros.

But what was wrong with that Karl Marx brother?...he wasn't very funny.

I guess my folks were Oscar Mayer true believers, because those are the kind of hot dogs we were subjected to, which I've since come to find out are not nearly the most flavorful. The bologna was a staple. I still don't mind it. Though I don't really eat it anymore, it got me through college. Then the other thing was braunschweiger, which I will still buy a tube of, maybe once a year. Braunschweiger is something you have to get hooked on when you are little, because you'd never willingly try that as an adult.

*And over the past few days, I've reclaimed a few things - candle sticks, ties, suspenders (actually "braces"), CDs, etc.   Kind of sad in a way (Memories... like the corners of my mind), but good too.

Good morning, all!  I'm listening to Mozart's Mass in C and feeling close to something spiritual.  I think I've mentioned before my theories on God and religion, but Mozart's about as close as I can get to explaining a higher diety; every note he comitted to paper seems to me touched by the highest form of heavenly grace.

DRs Ann and Joey, best of luck with that oratorio by Mendel's son Felix; is there anything more beautiful in ELIJAH than the women's trio "Lift Thine Eyes"?  What a stunner!

Today's a madcap sunday, where I would have preferred a more liesurely pace:  off to the recording office for a few rounds of BABES; I want to tackle some questions on "The March of the Toys."  After that, my friends Cathie and Alice are showing up to look at some books and videos I'm tossing.  Alice is principal of a school in the Bronx, and Cathie and I are opera fanatics.  Last year, when I weeded out a lot of books and things after the bookcases collapsed, I pulled some  things for Alice's school.  She'll sort through them and see if anything's good.

So, tomorrow I'll sleep late.

We were so poor as kids that bologna was a staple part of our diet, both at home and as school lunches.  I loathe the stuff.  I do love grilled bratwurst, however, with sauerkraut and mustard.

One of the Farrelly brothers wrote a lovely biographical novel, BEYOND PROVIDENCE, which made a rather good film.

DR FRANCOIS; I, too, really like her, Emma Thompson (but not fall in love with her), and  Sense and Sensibility is one of my favorite films of her and also Primary Colors in which she played first lady Hilary more than Hilary herself ( I think she’s more elegant than Hilary herself)
And thanks for her site and I enjoyed it!

No, unfortunately I’ve not been in Tokyo Disney Sea, but in Tokyo Desney Land several times before.
Did you play something in Disney Land?
I liked the Electrical Parade much. Would like to be Disney World in Florida once. It must be huge and fun.

Hello, DRHisaka!

Yesterday, in our British TOD, I mentioned the Benjamin Britten version of THE BEGGAR'S OPERA, which I would love to see performed in rep with SWEENEY TODD.  A BBC broadcast from 1948 with the original cast conducted by Benjamin Britten has been discovered on acetate and if being issued on CD April 26, 2005, by Pearl Records.  I've seen several different editions of THE BEGGAR'S OPERA performed, but I think the Britten version is the most successful musically and dramatically in linking the many snippets of song to the spoken text.  It's a great work, and some of you might be interested in hearing it.

And so, like the Seven Dwarfs, heigh ho . . .

I will answer for her. She is not too far. She is somewhere I am guessing from an hour to two hour drive to Disney.

As for me it is about 183 mile drive and depending on traffic it can be a 3hr drive but usually clocks in around 2 and half hours.

When I was growing up, I used to loathe mowing the lawn.  It stirred up my allergies, and since about half of the lawn was on a steep hill the job was a real pain.

The solution, I've found, is not to have a lawn.  There is no other way to avoid mowing.   :-\

Got the mowing finshed with, and since it's low 60s right now, it was fairly pleasant to be outside even doing something I detest. With all the rain we typically have at this point in the year, the grass grows very fast. I just mowed 8 or 9 days ago. Once the hot summer months get here and rain slacks up, I can got two weeks without mowing generally.

RE: Bologna and Braunschweiger (Thanks for jogging the childhood culinary memories, DR Rodzinksi.)

The stand-by school lunch sandwich was Oscar Mayer Bologna with a slice of American Cheese on Wonder Bread.  Sometimes a slice of Velveeta would replace the American Cheese.  Some days that was a good sandwich, and other days it was the last thing I wanted to eat for lunch.

*And to think that my Mom didn't really worry too much about keeping our lunch bags cool with ice packs.  Ah, the times they are a-changin'.

However, I always loved fried bologna sandwiches - hot or cold.  And for an extra treat, sometimes with a slice of fried salami in there too.  I seem to remember that once I discovered the joys of fried bologna, that I tried to fry every other cold cut my parents had in the fridge.  Pimiento Loaf always came out interestingly.

And my favorite fried bologna sandwich was anyone that happened to have a slice with a peppercorn in it.  Loved that "bite".  Fried bologna and salami would also make frequent appearances at weekend breakfasts and brunches.

Braunschweiger was one of those foods that I probably should not have liked as a kid, but did.  That and it's close cousin liverwurst.  But both had to be Oscar Mayer too.  Braunschweiger and chunks of cheddar cheese on a Ritz or a saltine....Perfection!  ;)

Oh... And my Mom was a big fan of Jell-O, and our school lunch desserts usually consisted of whatever concoction of Jell-O (pick a flavor, any flavor) and canned fruit (peaches, pears, or fruit cocktail) she would mix up almost on a daily basis.  My favorites were the ones where she would beat up the Jell-O to make it all frothy and lighter in color, then it would layer itself in the container.  She had a great assortment of Tupperware containers -most of which would eventually get left in my cubby hole at school and/or accidentally thrown away in the cafeteria.  Oops!

Hi all!

I think Oregon and New Jersey are the only non-self serve gas states, as I recall.

I have a large pussy-cat sleeping on my lap, and an old lady in my living room watching her third (3rd) 1930s John Wayne western!

Soon mom will be returning to Medford and I can have my television back...I have Bollywood movies to watch, darn it!

I didn't know that there were states that had non-self service gas stations.  Wow!  HHW is a real learning tool.   :)

DR. MBarnum, someday, you will wish for an old lady in the living room, watching John Wayne movies and that couch won't seem as uncomfortable as you remembered.

Personally, I get a little kick out watching Chisum (for example)  for the Lord-only-knows-how-many-times-time and having her say, "Gee, I NEVER saw that one before!"  And I'm sitting there quoting it, line for line.   ;)

I guess someday, someone will be doing the same for me when I say that about Star Wars or the Star Trek movies.

Dear TCB--how are you feeling today?  I hope much better.

DR Michael was correct, DR Hisaka.  I am only about two hours from MouseLand.  That's one of the nice things about where I live.  I really am not far from any point in Florida.  Now that I have the new SUV, I can go places.  Not yet but I will.   :)

DR François de Paris, I thought I had remembered something about you working for the Mouse.  I've also heard that the "unoffical" song for working there is:  "M. I. C. K. E. Y.   O. U. S. O. B.".  Have you heard that?  I have other friends that work for the Mouse that told me that and it cracked me up.

I'm watching that "Show Dog Moms and Dads" in between everything else.  One lady just fed her dog raw chicken backs.  I've always heard that you shouldn't feed your dog ANY chicken bones because they splinter and can tear your dogs tummy up.

Has anyone else heard that?

This is closing weekend for a local production of MAN OF LA MANCHA, starring a very dear friend of mine.  So, last night, sore neck and all, I went to see the show.  I did get my friend Betzy to do the driving so I could take some muscle relaxers before going to the theatre.  The show was entertaining, as always, and my friend, Micheal's performance as Cervantes was brilliant.  I saw him do the role seven years ago, and I thought I wold never see a performance that topped it; but last night he was even better than I had remembered.

The rest of the cast was the ususal assortment of community theater actors ranging from very good to dismal.  MY biggest complaint was that they were the cleanest, most well-manicured group of prisoners ever assembled in one prison.  No effort was made to make their clothing appear shabby or dirty, nor was there one speck of dirty on any on them.

Lovely day here.  One service station in town is a NON-self serve and all the others are help yourself.  I think you pay about 3 cents extra per gallon for the service.  This morning gasoline was 2.13 per gallon which I think is the same as I reported Friday.  I THINK.

When I played Dr. Carasco/The Duke in MAN OF LA MANCHA, I remember there being several containers of smudge in the dressing room provided by the theater for us. I always have my own make-up, of course, but I did use this to get properly grubby for the role.

DR elmore, when you mentioned the Britten Beggar's Opera yesterday I wondered if it had been recorded.  Fond memories of helping you with that show here in Middletown (how many lifetimes ago?) and I remember how much you wanted a recording.  I'd like to hear the new one.

Heigh ho, the glamorous life, huh?  Our Sunday, which is beautiful, has been occupied with laundry and grocery shopping.  Later we're going to a nearby church to hear author Ann Hagedorn talk about her book Beyond the River:  The Untold Stories of the Heroes of the Underground Railroad.  We'll definitely be home by 9pm, though, to see the first installment of the new Miss Marple series.

Once again, Greetings from Steve's new place.  We got almost everything out of his old apartment today.  All that's left are his boxes of Christmas ornaments and other decorations.  In other words, stuff that can wait.  We got a few more boxes unpacked, but the big project for the afternoon was putting together a few more shelving units, and moving other ones around.  Slowly, but surely.

Now we're about to head out to dinner.  I think.

Funny you mentioned Zero Focus (were you reading Video Watchdog, too?) - I'd just ordered it and The Demon.  I do find the reviewers in VW to be wrong as much as they are right, so who knows whether these will be good.  I also ordered A Tale of Two Sisters - supposedly the BEST horror film in years - horror in the style of The Haunting, that is - no blood or anything.  Of course, Dreamworks has already bought the US remake rights and will, I have no doubt, screw it up royally.  Isn't it funny that these Korean horror movies, which are all basically reworkings of US films in one way or another, are now considered to be the hottest things being made (starting with The Ring, and then The Grudge).

It's considered obscene, or something like that.

No, more seriously, the stated reason was that it is too dangerous for people to pump their own gas, that it should be done by a trained professional.  Basically, it boils down to a gimmick where the gas pumpers can guarantee their employment.

Okay, I'm going to post this before I lose it again!:

I'm back (duh!) from the Spirit of Washington Dinner Train (http://www.spiritofwashingtondinnertrain.com/).  Actually, we had lunch.  And it was quite good!  My sister's boyfriend Larry and I both had the Monte Cristo sandwich (I'd actually never had one before...it won't be the last time ;D), my sister Diane had the eggs Benedict and my niece (Hilary, the birthday girl) had the crab cakes.

I have to admit (and gladly) that the food on the train was much better this time than the last time I went.  My sister and I took our parents on the train for their 37th or 38 anniversary (their 41st will be this year) and I had a stuffed chicken breast with some kind of apple stuffing. :P I didn't think it was very good.  But today's meal was.

Hilary ordered her very first legal drink (in the US, she's been to Canada and ordered legally there).  She and I both had the Banana-Loco drink (Our special recipe, banana liqueur, cream de cacao, and amaretto topped with whipped cream) and my sister had an apple martini.  She discovered them in Vegas last year and loves them.  I don't drink but thought that the Banana-Loco sounded good...and I wasn't driving...or paying!  It was okay and since I don't really like the feel of alcohol (and there wasn't enough banana flavor), I won't need to order it again...anywhere.  I'll taste drinks if anyone else orders something that sounds halfway decent, but it just doesn't do anything for me.

I am glad to hear that I am not the only person who doesn't enjoy standup or comedy clubs.  I like to laugh and I have a good unique off-beat sense of humor, and I will usually pick a comedy film or play over a drama anytime.  But when it comes to standup comedy and comedy clubs, give me a root canal anytime.

To continue:

Dessert was either Chocolate Paradiso served on a Bed of Raspberry Puree and Crème Anglaise, or Washington Apple Crisp with Fresh Cinnamon Whipped Cream and Caramel Sauce.  Larry had the Chocolate Paradiso (he said it was good) and Hilary and I had the apple crisp.  It was just okay.  Not bad, but nothing special...and not enough caramel sauce!  My sister just took bites from Hilary's apple crisp and Larry's chocolate thing.

As for where we were seated, we were upstairs in the dome of the Rainier car.  It was pretty cool!  You could see all over the place.  Larry and my sister both took pictures.  I'll post a couple later if they let me copy them.

After the train ride, we went to Fry's Electronics, which is this HUGE, GIGANTIC electronics store not too far from the dinner train station.  It looked like you could be stuck in their for days and not see it all.  Talk about overkill!  I went directly to the CD section (surprisingly small for such a large store) and found the "Soundtracks" section and the "Vocals" section.  There was no separate "Broadway" or "Showtunes" section...evidently, those are mixed in with the "Vocal" CDs, but I only saw maybe six musical cast recordings at all.  This is not a place that I will look for CDs in the future.

What I did buy, though was Nelly McKay's "Get Away From Me" CD.  The library where I work got the CD and I fell in love with it...now I have a legal copy! ::) But it's not just the CD.  It's one of those new DualDisc format CD/DVDs!  Click HERE (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0007SL388/qid=1113790958/sr=8-6/ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i6_xgl15/002-0523980-6500818?v=glance&s=music&n=507846) for the amazon.com listing for more information.  It has two sides like some DVDs, but one side is a regular CD and the other has DVD material:  the entire audio CD with pictures to watch while playing on your DVD player, two bonus songs (audio only) and a 26 minute DVD concert.  It's pretty cool, except that it has the warning, "The audio side of this disc does not conform to CD specifications and therefore not all DVD and CD players will play the audio side of this disc."  It's actually thicker than a regular CD or DVD.  So far, it's played in every player at my house and my sister's.  I'll have to check it in my portable CD player at work.  That's where it'll get the most use.  Then we drove home.

And, that was my day on my niece's 21st birthday. ;D

Never mind!  There is a TCB in every crowd!

Take a bow, TCB. Your influence is ever-widening.

I just finished watching DESPERATE HOUSEWIES. I have to say I kind of figured what Bree's son was up to (though he did admit to more than I thought.)

Jennifer, in regard to your question about Joel Grey on ALIAS a few days ago, the description of this week's episode of ALIAS in my TV Week magazine in today's newspaper said he was PRETENDING to be Arvin Sloane. This week's episode is entitled "Another Mr. Sloane."

Good Evening!

Back from Steve's... We just ended up having dinner there - since he had bought some food the other day...  I was his first dinner guest in his new place.  :)  Nice dinner of salad and pasta.

So... Now I'm back at my place, and I'm feeling a little restless.  I may go for a short walk, or I may end up heading to, as DR JRand, put it, a "special interest" place.  ;)

We shall see...

And now, after a last couple of late nights, I am headed for bed. Rehearsals for LA CAGE begin tomorrow.

HEY, JMK, MBARNUM AND JANE and everyone else, too!!  Starting tomorrow night (at least, on the Seattle PBS station) will be the Portland, Oregon episodes of "Antiques Roadshow (http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/roadshow/)" that I went to last year!!  I may be seen in the background!!  I wore my tie-dye t-shirt under my green Hawaiian shirt...very colorful. ;D

New Jersey is the same way. You are NOT ALLOWED to pump your own gas there. I kinda like not having to get out of the car.

I like it, too.  You can actually get your tank filled and not have to guess-timate whether to tell the clerk that you want $20 or $25 worth.

And strangely enough, gas is cheaper in NJ.  I believe it's the cheapest in the nation at the mo'.

Ah, I was wondering if that was the one you went to George! Our newspaper has run a couple of stories on this one already this week, as there is a Salem woman who is going to be on it.

Another movie for my list.  Thanks MBARNUM.  I am still recovering from HONG KONG RHAPSODY and about to dive into the other two you sent me.

Lovely weather today....beautiful.

I clicked on the link DR MS - but I couldn't access DR CP's article. :(

I don't mind stand-up, if it's good.....but IMPROV  is something that makes me run screaming....LOUD.  There is a place in Indy called ComedySportz and the act-letes do regular Improv that is PAINFUL...PAINFUL....  I tried twice to watch.  Now when I have to go down that street, I run past the window and hope they are not doing anything in there that I would see.

Have a good first rehearsal DR MATTH - be sure to take your camera.  I love first rehearsal pictures and usually give them with a card for opening night!

I'm back from the Improv, and nothing I saw this evening has changed my feelings about standup, at least standup as we know it today.

Joan Rivers could do some good stand up.  Totie Fields could do some good stand up.  Jack Benny and Red Skelton were masters, although I guess they were more story tellers.
