Well, you've read the notes, the notes were listless, and now it is time for you to post until the listless cows come home.

Today, I'm only going to work a partial day.  I'm leaving early because my dad's church, Saint George Byzantine Catholic Church (https://stgeorgeolympia.org/) is going to have a special service for him...I think that that's what's happening.  It's something like that.  Anyway, my mom and I are going and I need to get some new pants.  I bought a couple of new shirts, but I only have black jeans.  I know that my mom would not like that. ::)

 ;)

FYI...my dad was the only religious person in our family, but the people at the church asked if she would go and she didn't want to go alone, so I'm going.  I remember going a few times when the church was first built, but I haven't been back.

DRs TCB and Jeanne, thanks for your explanations about the unemployment debit cards.  I can see how it's helpful for people with no bank accounts, but ,my neighbors have several accounts, and I would think direct deposit safer than an easily misplaced debit card.

When I was in college, I was in Anouilh's comedy Thieves' Carnival.  It's a very funny play, and I've got tons of Anouilh's plays.  US publishers issued three paperback volumes of Anouilh's plays, including Lillian Hellman's adaptation of L'Alouette (The Lark).  British publisher Methuen has published two volumes of Anouilh, including Christopher Fry's more faithful adaptation of L'Alouette, which was produced in London with Dorothy Tutin as Joan and directed by Sir Peter Hall, around 1955.

One of the most prolific of Anouilh's translators was Lucienne Hill, who began work in the theatre as a play reader and secretary to London producer Binkie Beaumont.

My friend Michael Valenti wrote a musical version of Anouilh's dark comedy Mlle Colombe, which Julie Harris and Eli Wallach (I believe) performed on Broadway.  It's about a naïve young man going into military service who leaves his pretty young wife, Colombe, in the carer of his mother, a huge Parisian stage star in fin du siècle Paris, and how Colombe is corrupted by many affairs, including one with her brother-in-law before she ends up a stage star, too.

Tammy Grimes played the mother in Valenti's production, and that is how I met Tammy Grimes.

Somehow I seem to recall that Bernstein wrote some incidental choral pieces for a production of The Lark, but I may be mixing things up.

You are absolutely right.  There were a Latin set and a French set, written for Hellman's adaptation, and this was the beginning of a collaboration that ended in the 1956 version of Candide.  The choruses are great.  One of the French tunes Bernstein used ended up in the Louis Ganne operetta Hans le joueur de flûte.

Ended in 1956?  Rather crashed and burned.  My friend Charlie Harmon, who was Bernstein's personal assistant for several years before his death, told me Hellman came to dinner at the Ansonia one night and spent the entire evening bitching about Candide to Lenny. Not long before she died, there was an off-Broadway revival of her play My Mother, My Father, and Me.  He said Hellman, who came to rehearsals, was so blind she put her cigarette out in the mayonnaise jar.

I made some tuna last night, and I’ve been intending to ask what everyone else puts in their tuna salad.

When I have it all here, my traditional things were celery, diced black olives, and diced onions (not too much, even though I love onion). Fresh ground pepper and sea salt to finish. On occasion I’ve been known to add a pinch of curry powder.

Recently, though, in lieu of all that, I’ve just mixed in some sweet relish (a sugar-free one), which I’d never done before in all of these years, and it’s delicious. I’m not sure that the relish would be compatible with those other more savory items, so I consider these to be alternatives.

What else should I be trying?

I'm so mad I could spit.  I can be so damned stupid, and I think I really blew it this morning.  I got a popup about Mac updates so I installed them, and I should have done a backup first.  I've been own the phone with AppleCare for the past two hours, and I cannot get onto my computer.  The last person I spoke to wanted me to empty my computer and download my last backup from a week ago.  I did not want to do that since I will lose all my last book revisions and emails from the last week.  So we're trying a new download from my hard drive and God alone knows if this will work or not.  If worse comes to worst, I know at least one friend with a nearly current copy of the book so I can always get the copy from him.

I saw that update notice! What's infuriating to me is that they don't tell you what, exactly, wants to be updated. I insist on being able to make an informed decision.

And then I went to look at something else first, and the update notification disappeared. It's not in my notifications, so where in the HELL is it?

I went to the App Store and there's nothing there to be updated. The only other thing I'm aware of is the update from Mojave to Catalina, which because of certain software, I absolutely cannot allow. I believe a change of OS does NOT happen without your permission, and that had better be right.

So, is it an update to the current OS? And what in the HELL caused it to bomb out for DR Elmore?

One of the boutique labels in the UK is about to release up-to-date scans and deluxe Blu-ray sets of I, Monster (Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing) and The Beast Must Die (Calvin Lockhart and Peter Cushing). These are both Amicus Productions, and I do love the Amicus portmanteau horror films.

I took a look at the old DVD of the former, and I could tell right away that I'd never even seen this movie. What's more, in chapter-surfing and watching a minute here and there, I found it fairly dismal in its overall look, and just plain unappealing, story- and acting-wise. (It's a Jekyll and Hyde adaptation, but this one sure wasn't attracting my interest.)

As for the latter, I'm pretty sure I've never seen it, either, and I even remember a friend telling me not to bother with it.

So do I have the wrong impressions of these? Anyone here care to talk me into buying or avoiding?

So, the AppleCare move to rebuild from the hard drive worked, and I am back online and nothing was lost.  That's a big relief.

Thank Gawd!

I always check to see what the updates are before actually installing - there's a little thing to click on that will tell you.  But it sounds like elmore's pop-up may have been one of those bogus things.  The only update I've had is for Safari - nothing else for the last couple of weeks.  I had no idea we went from Mojave to California because I haven't even gone to Mojave and won't until someone calmly explains to me where the iTunes stuff will be and that it looks the same.

That damned Mojave upgrade destroyed my iTunes playlists, and I had to go into my iTunes in my hard drive and download everything back into my iTunes.  I can no longer do playlists nor pay things on iTunes in correct recording sequence.  I detest it.

There are also two other performances, one from 1975, possibly the premiere. and one from the Greek National Opera.

I love black olives, not sure I would like them in tuna.  I might try it one day as I occasionally make it.  I add celery, hard boiled eggs, and mayo.  The seasonings I like are salt, pepper, onion, and paprika.  Keith also likes garlic seasoning and mustard in his along with equal amounts of canned salmon to the tuna.

Oh, no!

First event was fun - just me, answering questions to about 130 Partridge Family fans.  I did that for over an hour, logged out of that one and went right to the other one, via a Zoom-like platform called Streamyard, which is every bit as inept as Zoom.  Terrible sound, freezing, jerky motion, people were disconnected and had to reconnect, clips were jerky - at least that's how it was for me watching on my iPhone.  It was fun, though.  Shirley was there for ten minutes and was VERY sweet.  Danny was funny and especially kind to me and told a funny story that there was a rumor going around during the fourth season that I was being considered to replaced David Cassidy - that seems like a really tall tale but it was really funny.  Lots of good stories and the host did a very good job of it.  But these livestream things have to figure it out better.  Maybe it's because having to have the iPhone where I do my commentary meant I was on Wi-fi rather than hard-wired, but I can't stand the lighting or the camera in the computer to do it there - I look like I'm five hundred years old.

Had a long telephonic conversation - a nice one - then went to Gelson's and got some small bites kind of foodstuffs to bring me up to 1000 calories - I think I went over by 100, but that's fine.  A tiny bit of spicy Thai pasta, one potato pancake (only 99 calories), four small egg rolls (200 calories) and it was all very good.  Now that I look at this - maybe I only went over by fifty calories, even better.

DR TCB - I never knew, or had forgotten, that at one time you were a travel agent.

It seems to me that they do a lot of work for not very much compensation.

I was a travel agent back in the 80’s.  It was a fun job back in those days.  The pay was not great, but in those days you got commissions off of everything you booked, not just cruises and tours, but on airline tickets, as well.

That all changed when the PC took off.  There was no longer any need to pay commissions on air fare.  The only good part that I believe still makes being a travel agent worthwhile is the free travel, but even that isn’t what it used to be.

My sister put together a memory board with a whole bunch of pictures of my dad.  My mom thought that it was a bit over the top, but we took it.  I'll make sure that I take a picture of it tomorrow.

They are nice photos.

When we get there and set up the picture board in the hall (it's another building), the few people that are there just LOVE the all the pictures.  Evidently, whenever someone else loves something, it seems that that makes it okay for my mom. ::)

Of course they loved the photos.   I know I do at services.

Are ring lights supposed to be as big as your head?  I think the one I ordered is suspect. It is pretty small.

No, that is probably right.

After setting up the picture, we just chat with a few more people and basically wait for the memorial service to start.  The Byzantine services are almost all sung, and there's a LOT of incense burned.  They had a guide to the service with the complete text and musical lines for people to sing.  I didn't sing the words, but I hummed all the melodies.  They were very simple and easy to sing, but the father didn't follow along with the melodies printed in the booklet that we got.  He's from the Czech Republic, so maybe they use different melodies.

The one picture that my mom didn't want was their wedding picture that was taken outside of the city hall where they got married.  She thought that everyone would be able to tell that she was pregnant :o but you really have to stare at it to be able to tell.  Several people really liked that picture and commented on what a nice picture it was.  No one mentioned that she might possible look pregnant, so I think that made my mom feel better about that.

Either that, or the guy just couldn't sing. ;D

Well?

The whole service took a little over an hour.  A few more people came up and talked to us and offered their condolences, too.  I figured that there were maybe a couple dozen people, if that.  I have no idea how many people will be there in the morning.  I printed 50 programs and we brought those tonight.  I'm printing up a few more and we'll bring those tomorrow.

I’m a purist, just a touch of mayo and a squirt of lemon.

But no tuna?

What time in the morning is the service?

It' starts at 9:00.  Ugh.  My mom wants me to get to her house by 8:00 (there WILL be wiggle room ;) ), and we'll probably leave between 8:15 and 8:30.  I don't know how long this liturgy will take, but we'll stay for the duration.

I am waiting to hear how the church service was.

It was really nice.  We get there and meet the father and his wife.  In the Byzantine church, the priests can marry.  They all were really nice and offered their condolences.  I don't remember anyone's names, but that's not unusual. ;)

I like that the priests can marry.

I am sure the priests like it even more than you do.

We're also going to have the military service with them playing Taps and the flag-folding ceremony, but there won't be any firing of the guns.  My mom said that they're not doing that because of Covid.  My niece is VERY happy about that, with her ears and all.

I guess that answers my question about the religious portion if the service.

Tonight's was specifically a memorial service, and tomorrow's service is a liturgy, which is a mass.  I don't know what will be different, other than the military portion.

This is why I like photos at a service.  You get to see people at different stages of their life.
