Well, you've read the notes, you've smelled the notes AND the coofie, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home, which will be as soon as they smell the cowfie.

Good Morning!

Well... I tried to hit the hay, but the hay kept hitting back.  I was tired, but I just wasn't sleepy.  So, I just got back out of bed a few minutes ago, and here I am!  I'm practically feeling wired.  Most unseemly.  But I guess I'm due for one of my semi-routine all-nighters, so...

Hmm....I guess I could head out for breakfast at the great diner just a few blocks from here... Hmmm....  Scrapple!

:)

Good morning, DRTomovoz!  I'm happy to hear you liked the film.  I'm looking forward to seeing it.

I forgot to mention that yesterday afternoon I saw David Hyde Pierce at Tower Records at Lincoln Center.  I don't know him so I didn't say anything, just verified it was he and stalked him for around 3-4 hours.

When is our DRJane coming back from the wilds of Portland? I miss her!

Hi, Ben!
Title: Re:SMELLING THE COOFIE
Post by: Ben on April 22, 2005, 05:42:04 AM
I saw Sweet Charity, Part Deux yesterday. Miss Applegate gave a credible and solid performance. She is not a dancer but she has done her homework and learned some basic steps and she acquits herself nicely. I don't know if she sits out the big dance numbers in There's Gotta Be Something Better Than This and I'm A Brass Band because of the recent injury or because she isn't a strong enough dancer to do what Charlotte D'Amboise does. I think it's a mix of both. She has a pleasant voice. If she had been a television star in the 50s and 60s she probably would have done her share of albums, a la Shelly Fabares and Paul Petersen and others. She's somewhat breathy at times and she does need two mikes, one at her forehead and another at her ear (you can see them both and that everyone else only has one) but there is a sweetness to her performance and a determination that makes her real. As I said earlier, she has done her homework and though she's not a "musical theatre" natural I don't think she should be trashed as a silly California actor trying to make a name on Broadway. Yes, in a side to side comparison, I prefer Charlotte D'Amboise, but CD is also a Broadway vet with years of training and performance. Miss Applegate's first attempt in a Broadway musical is not the mess that some people were hoping for or expecting. I hope the critics mention this kind of information in the reviews. I only have 90 seconds in my Radio Wales review so it will be difficult to distill all this down, but Brantley (at the NY Times) has lots of room, as do most of the others. I don't think she deserves unqualified praise, but she does not, IMHO, deserve dismissal, either.

Hi, Dan! I was typing (gesticulating) about Miss Applegate while you were offering greetings.

I have much to choose from here at the office today. I have Chad Mitchell's solo albums on CD (Himself, Love, a Feeling Of and Virgo Moon). Larry, even though they're not CM Trio discs, if you would like copies, let me know. I also have Song of Singapore Off-Broadway Cast Recording, the new James Naughton CD It's About Time (may I just interject, I think Mr. Naughton is one of the sexiest men in New York, yes he runs a close race with our own WSMA, Brent Barrett). I also have the Original London Cast of Charles Strouse's The Nightingale with Sarah Brightman

Anthony has rehearsal all this weekend and we don't have much planned for viewing on the VCR or DVD.

I'm seeing Virginia Woolf on Sunday afternoon.

That's it for now.

I'm going to Anthony's show on April 29th (opening night). I know that date is not good for Vixmom, her DH and the Vixter because Vixter is performing next week, correct? I'm also going on May 20 (a Friday night) with friends from my office who have been following Anthony's performances from Connecticut to the Fringe Festival in the Village to this. I'm open for other dates with Hainsies/Kimlets. Just let me know.

The Garland was, in certain ways, more friendly a room.  Much more crowded, but there was something very cozy about it all, and one could roam from table to table quite easily.  At the Hilton, all the celeb tables are spread out over a huge room and they don't feel connected like they did at the Garland.

I saw Christina Applegate on the Today show (today).  She might not be equal to the top broadway stars.  But she has a certain charm and sweetness.  And she sounded good.  I wonder if she is in any pain when she dances.  Because she danced quite a bit on the Today show.  And I kept wondering if each step was hurting her.

I haven't seen the whole show, but I bet a lot of the critics will admire her determination.

JR, I'm not sure if Pajama Game photos will be online anywhere, as this is a high school production.  I'll ask tonight when I go (opening night!).

In the unbelievable department:  we're 3 weeks into our current Tigard Pops Choir session and I always have to make a few calls to new people to see if they're continuing with the choir.  So I called this one lady last night and left a message on her machine asking if she was still planning on attending as I wasn't certain I had seen her for the last two weeks.  Lo and behold at 1 in the morning our phone rings, scaring Betsy and me half to death.  The machine picks it up and we hear this completely slurred voice saying "Hey, you called me.  I wanna continue with the choir but I've had a relapse--alcohol, y'know.  So let's see what happens."  Click.  Can you believe it?  Luckily the kids didn't wake up.

Topic of the Day:

In my DVD player:  all three discs of "Penn & Teller's Bullsh*t!"  Yesterday afternoon, I watched the segment on the "Mucus Mask" with our very own BK!  Oh my goodness, what kind of people would allow this to be done to themselves?? :P It was hysterical!! ;D After that will be "Smiles of a Summer Night" that I just got from deepdiscountdvd.com!

In my CD player at work:  a whole bunch of CDs that I got from eBay and amazon.com, all within the last couple of weeks (cast albums first):

Mary Poppins:  the Original London cast recording!

Robin Hood:  The Ohio Light Opera Production of Reginald De Koven's "popular romantic-comic operetta."  I've have a former library copy of the vocal score for about 20 years a few months ago I also got a CD of period recordings of songs from the score!

Titanic:  The Ultimate Collection, produced by our very own BK...from eBay for only 99¢+$3.00 shipping!

Audra McDonald's "Happy Songs," used from a seller through amazon.com.

Nellie McKay's "Get Away From Me," the DualDisc format with the CD on one side and DVD stuff on the other.

"Geraldine Turner Sings the Stephen Sondheim Songbook, Volume 2" by Geraldine Turner.  I also have her first "Stephen Sondheim Songbook."

I ended up falling asleep on the couch around 8:30, I guess.  I was watching the Today Show hoping to catch Christina Applegate, but I guess I zoned out by that time.  Then I remember waking up during the into for Christina Applegate on "Regis and Kelly", but I don't think I zoned again even before she was seated in her chair.  Then...

I can e-mail you the original.  It's a standard 4x6 print - not cropped - and a large file, so...  Do you have a high-speed connection?  or would you like a standard size file of the cropped/avatar version?

In his notes today, our esteemed BK wrote:

Quote
Then I had to go back to Mr. Grant Geissman’s and finish doing whatever work needed to be done on the Guy Haines tracks. That took five hours, but it’s all finished, save for the few tracks that get horns put on them.

I believe we should all send our condolences to those few tracks for being cuckolded.

And a hearty cheer (with Cherry Coke) to DR Sandra!

Media Check:

Car CD player: Volume Two of American Musical Theater: Shows, Songs, and Stars from the Smithsonian Collection of Recordings.  Volume two covers from 1934 (Ethel Merman, "I Get a Kick Out of You" Anything Goes) to 1947 (Ella Logan, "How Are Things in Glocca Morra?" Finian's Rainbow).

This was after playing the soundtrack to Tarzan three times in a row.  But not the instrumental tracks, because those are "boring", according to the older grandlad.

DVD Player: The Adventures of Errol Flynn.

A friend sent the following to me:

Two men are drinking in a bar at the top of the Empire State Building. One turns to the other and says, "You know, last week I discovered that if you jump from the top of this building by the time you fall to the 10th floor, the winds around the building are so intense that they carry you around the building and back into the window."

The bartender just shakes his head in disapproval while wiping the bar.

The 2nd Man says: "What are you a nut? There is no way that could happen."

1st Man: "No it's true let me prove it to you." So he gets up from the bar, jumps over the balcony, and careens to the street below. When he passes the 10th floor, the high wind whips him around the building and back into the 10th floor window and he takes the elevator back up to the bar.

The 2nd Man tells him: "You know I saw that with my own eyes, but that must have been a one time fluke."

1st Man: "No, I'll prove it again" and again he jumps and hurtles toward the street where the 10th floor wind gently carries him around the building and into the window. Once upstairs he urges his fellow drinker to try it.

2nd Man: "Well, what the hell, it works, I'll try it." So he jumps over the
balcony, plunges downward, passes the 11th, 10th, 9th, 8th floors and hits the sidewalk with a 'splat.'

Back upstairs the Bartender turns to the other drinker: "You know, Superman, you're really a jerk when you're drunk."

I was watching a snatch of Rodzinski's beloved Ritz Bros. in Straight, Show, and Place...a scene where a rather young and almost glamourous Ethel Merman is singing a zippy little number to Richard Arlen.  Mostly.you saw the back of Arlen's head. but occasionally they gave you a profile shot.  I was fascinated by the large gap in his back teeth on the right side.

I didn't see the original staging of KISMET, but I did see the revival at the Music Theater of Lincoln Center with Alfred Drake recreating his original role, and it was one of the most lavish spectacles I've ever seen on the stage. DR CP I watched a bit of some of the Ritz Brothers.  I can't get into them....I just don't get it.

DR MB - ah the lovely Meena....what a tragic and sad life story....but such a beautiful and heart-tugging actress!  I can hardly wait for the AIR HOSTESS report!

Tonight on CMT is POPULARITY CONTEST - very funny reality type show.

AND on TCM Sunday at Noon EST - my favorite Lana Turner all-stops-out performance as MADAME X!!!  Featuring Constance Bennett newly returned from Switzerland with her fresh facelift - shortly before she gave herself a party and dropped dead.

A quote from Pauline Kael:  "Onto the screen came Constance Bennett. John Forsythe said, "Hello, Mother," and there were gasps in the audience.....Lana Turner is NOT Madame X - she is Brand X , a commodity to be bought and sold...."

Which should say:

I know.... nobody's asking me but i have the French version of the SOM soundtrack on LP! That is rare!

OH.... Two (2) DReaders mention the London Cast Recording of Mary Poppins with no comments, and i can tell you that it is a marvel!
Get it if you can; the singing is terrif', the new songs are just beautiful, the orchestrations quite subdued and charming!
Very faithful to the film and then quite different too!
Just listening to it makes one want to take the plane to London, England! (Or one's umbrella!!)

And speaking of pollen...

There were concerns yesterday that we might have had some twisters forming here and there due to the color of the sky during the height of the storms.  Well, the color in the sky was due to all the pollen in the air.

And it was announced today that Richmond is No. 7 on the list of Worst U.S. Cities for Allergy Sufferers!  -Hey, that's still better than the ranking of Murder Capital USA a few years ago.

Yes, to Sweeney Todd, but there is no mention of Got Tu Go Disco.

Strange goings-on...Len Cariou does not do a number from ST, but he sings a solo in a Richard Rogers tribute.  And while Angela Lansbury lipsynchs to "The Worse Pies in London", it is not the version from the cast recording.  There's a ridiculously censored "Aggie Song" from Whorehouse.  In Dick Van Dyke's introduction as a presenter, it's announced that he will be returning to Broadway in the fall in something called IF IF IF.  And Lucie Arnez was not nomineed for They're Playing Our Song.

And why was Henry Fonda on almost every Tony Broadcast during the 70s?

I watched four hours' worth of TV-episode DVDs today:

2 season 1 STAR TREK episodes including Harlan Ellison's "The City on the Edge of Forever" which most Trekkers seem to consider the show's best episode.

the last of the POIROT hour-long mysteries - "The Incredible Theft"

Season 2, episode 4 of ANGEL.

Tomorrow - movies, movies, movies. . . .

Henry FOnda did a goodly amount of theater in the 1970s when his movie career dried up.

I have that 1979 Tony broadcast as well. I REMEMBER MAMA opened after the Tony cutoff date, but they gave Richard Rodgers a special Tony so they could feature a number from the show. (He had just gotten a special Tony a few years before, the same year Ethel Merman was given a special Tony.)

SWEENEY won 8 (highly deserved) Tonys that year. and I remember the audience laughing as Barry Bostwick read the nominees for Best Musical since it was SO obvious SWEENEY was going to win. Also amusing was that the playup music for SWEENEY winners was an upbeat version of "Not While I'm Around."

Glenn Close is also mistakenly identified as Mrs. Len Cariou while Len receives his Tony.

I never saw the show but I remember that the designer decided to have all the walls and the ceiling of the Minskoff painted black using cheap industrial paint.  It took months for the theatre owners to restore the interior.

TCB: Too early to say, really, other than it's a genre I love and that's not done all that much, and an idea that just came to me the other day.  That, coupled with the fact that Tammy wants to do a play (since we didn't get to do one last year) and she has a lead on some dough, I thought I'd take a crack at this idea.  And yes, Virginia, because it's a play I have even done some outlining.

That was water with the birthday tostada, but only because Earl's Mexican Restaurant doesn't have Cherry Coke.

And the cheesecake was the chocolate peanut butter cookie dough cheesecake from the Cheesecake Factory. Yummy!

Tomorrow, I have to go to work to make up a few hours because on Tuesday, I took the day off to work the load-in and usher for STOMP tour that came to Olympia.  After that will be my niece's birthday party at my parents' house, then I have to leave that early so that I can go to see Miss Saigon in Seattle.  I'm going with a bunch of high school kids. ::) Alexis, the daughter of my friend Margo is in the drama class and they're all going, so Margo asked if I wanted to go.  I didn't realize that my parents would plan a birthday party for my niece a week after her birthday.  Oh well, I'll still get to go to both...I just won't be able to stay at the party as long as I would have wanted.

Wheeler-Woolsey update: CRACKED NUTS: Another fine vehicle with an utterly absurd plot, Boris Karloff in a small role, Edna May Oliver providing fine comic relief. Insane dialogue:

Woolsey: "My sister, now there was a gal who could cook coffee. The first time, she used tea to make it, so it was no good. After that, she used cocoa, but it tasted like clam sauce, so we froze it and ate it as ice cream."

Halfway through GIRL CRAZY, and this one isn't that good so far. Gershwin songs are abused as throwaways. "I've got Rhythm" is sung at lightning speed and out of tune by Kitty Kelly. A few years ago, my gal was in a production of CRAZY FOR YOU, the transformed version of this, using much of the same Gershwin music.

Good luck with the shave too. What sort of razor do you use? Me, I use the Gillette MACH 3. Blades are expensive, but what can you do? They will never make an electric that comes close to what those blades can do. I will not go to four blades though. Enough blades!!!
