Well, you've read the notes, the notes had weird Japanese things, and now it is time for you to post until the weird Japanese cows come home.

DR Jeanne, our wonderful super Steve Trifun, when he retired and returned to Serbia, passed the job on to his son-in-law Bosko, who was sadly not his father-in-law, and management sacked him. Val replaced him.

I slept a solid 5.5 hours when I woke around 3:00.  When I went back to sleep I had a long dream about working at The Drama Book Shop, then woke at 5:30, fretted about cleaning off the refrigerator top before noon, and decided to get up just before 6:00.

So, this morning, after kitty cleanup, I need to clean the stove, clean off the top of the refrigerator, and move the microwave, which may require help.

Kitty cleanup is over, and the last of the thawed meat is out of the freezer and into the garbage.  Remnants of that telephone directory Stella shredded continue to turn up, so before I can take the recyclables to the basement, I must pick up what I can and use the dustbuster on the rest.

No need to be too concerned, DR elmore3003. One is to turn in my jugs 'o urine from the past 2 days for analysis as to why my body is producing so many stones. The other is with a Nephrologist for consulting on the best way to maintain the health and viability of my remaining kidney.

I ate too much last night. It didn't affect me in any way, other than the feeling of having eaten too much. But man, was it ever good. Our neighbor invited us over to his deck for a drink and some leftover food, the latter being some huge homemade meatballs. These are the type of meatball that have a place in comfort food territory, and I wouldn't even have them with pasta. Well, you can, of course. But they're a meal all their own, and deservedly so. He's sending us his recipe.

Interesting that BK's first eBay purchase was a Buddha.

I also started in 1998, around March, and I can't absolutely swear to this but I believe my first purchase was a copy of the hardbound souvenir book for the South Pacific film. I don't know what kind of search led me to that, I think I had just been exploring a bunch of very random things. But I'd never had that souvenir book before.

A few early purchases were vocal scores -- in particular, the "hardbound" (this one is actually more flexible than that) copy of The Most Happy Fella, and a replacement copy of my inexplicably lost Porgy and Bess vocal score. This one is just a little less nice than mine had been, but the price was right and it gets the job done.

A few other early purchases were various ViewMaster slides and a couple of viewers.

Edit:  A few others were several movie tie-in paperbacks that had meant an enormous amount to me as a kid. I found beautiful copies, and I still treasure them.

An additional reason for the lethargy I feel this morning is a restless night of sleep (which, seriously, might have been partially due to the heavy eating) compounded by one totally nonsensical and irritating dream after another. Not one of these came close to being about something interesting or useful or awful, or anything at all. They were just fragments that repeated ad nauseum, just a huge royal pain in my royal ARSE.

Good Morning.

So - yesterday evening was one of many exciting events.  When I returned home from work, there was a note on the door saying that work on the outside of our building would begin tomorrow (TODAY).  Everything is to be removed from the patio so they can do their thing.  Let me back up - on Saturday, I pulled out everything from my storage closet off the patio in order to start going through things and throwing things away in preparation for the move.  So, my patio was full of boxes, tubs, etc.  I've been watching the construction happening for a few months now and thought I had at least a week to get the patio cleared.  Well, I was wrong.  I even called to be sure the note didn't have a type-o in it. Nope, no tyoe-o.   So I hauled all of the stuff into the apartment.  It didn't take too much time, but did pre-empt a planned bike ride.  I throw this away and that away, so that felt good.

I finished watching the final season of "Schitt's Creek" - which I felt was wrapped up quite nicely - but left us wanting more, etc.   Sad that there will not be anymore I'm sure due to the people involved etc. I'm not saying that's a bad thing, but sad nonetheless.

We installed our AC unit about 24 years ago. It has only needed repair three or four times, the most recent last June.  We have been tossing around the idea of replacing it before it conks out for good. Personally, I think AC units should last at least 25 years, but I guess the standard is 10, which is ridiculous, in my opinion.
Title: Re: WEIRD JAPANESE THINGS
Post by: Laura on October 21, 2020, 11:08:15 AM
With the units being made today, the closet that houses the furnace is too small. So the whole thing needs to go on the roof, which does not please me at all.

They'll need to reinforce the roof, put new ductwork in, move gas and electric lines, etc.

DR Laura:

My central AC made it 24 years, too. It would have lasted another year or two, even though we knew it was in a delicate condition. But after we'd had that tornado activity and extended power outages in 2018, it survived that okay and even ran on our generator power just fine. But it didn't survive whatever was going on when the power company was restoring power to the neighborhood. It finally seized up and would not start again. The company servicing it said that it was very possible that a surge knocked it out when they were working on the power, because a few other customers reported the same thing.

As it happened, Nathan owned a few window ACs that are in fine shape and we just put those in the past two summers and have been fine. For the replacement of the entire unit -- the compressor that sits outside the house, and the other half that attaches to the furnace -- I'm looking at about six grand. The insurance company offered so little that I said I'd wait for a while. They won't replace just parts for anything using the old refrigerant, you have to install completely new units. Which is a nice racket. At least I won't be looking at the kind of structural work that you are. What a nightmare.

I'm glad to hear they "totaled" the fridge. Seriously, you don't want one that has failed to that extent. In my experience, it's extremely unlikely that they could really repair it, so I'm happy to know that they readily admitted that and are taking the correct action.

We have, too, in the past, DR Jane, but I was hoping to avoid such a public place this year.  We survived, but the only person wearing a mask in the store was the pharmacist who took care of us.  There were several other customers and a clerk - all unmasked - and the clerk was ranting and raving about how understaffed they and how overworked she is.  She was right, but I didn't care to hear it.  We couldn't get home fast enough.

As retirees, we didn't have to worry about losing jobs in this pandemic. So, we are actually quite fortunate that the Disneyland fund didn't have to go to living expenses.

The only stores I go into now are a small grocery/produce store, CVS pharmacy, and PetsMart, because there's hardly anyone in any of those stores.

We got our flu shots a couple months ago at CVS. The one we go to is not busy, and we were out within 10 minutes.

OMG.  I didn't realize, or forgot, masks are not required in Ohio.  I would be wearing an N95 mask for all shopping if I lived there.  That is what I did here until masks were required.

Today I wore my N95 for my eye check.  With my allergies (must be allergies since a cold never happened) I wanted extra protection for both of us.  I find when I feel like this my resistance is down and I am more susceptible to catching something.

Wednesday afternoon greetings!  Richard and I have a date to try to get flu shots today.  We have to go to a pharmacy, because our useless primary care practice is not making appointments "just" for flu shots.

We always go to the pharmacy for our shots.

And now you know why we're keeping ourselves isolated.  There's a lot of non-compliance here, which may be why our county is one of Ohio's hotspots.

Appointment with the kidney specialist (the nephrologist) was alarming, in a way. Nothing specific, but I now have only one kidney, and there is a long list of things that could go wrong. The main thing is, I need to improve my chances by making a lot of lifestyle changes to lose a s--t load of weight. Which I already knew.

First listen to a song from the new Anyone Can Whistle. Maria Friedman, like Jenna Russell in the first Sunday revival, seems into ACTING. I also found the balance off. Too much orchestra trying to drown her out.

I ordered it.  I just listened to this song and Maria Friedman sang, "The rest of the world isn't all like you," which was also sung by Lee Remick on the OBC.  I have a photocopied copy of the published script and the printed line was, "The play isn't over by a longshot yet!"  I'm surprised that they didn't use the lyric in the script.  I can only assume that Sondheim okayed it since he was involved with this recording...or maybe nobody questioned it.  Just curious.

DR Jeanne, our wonderful super Steve Trifun, when he retired and returned to Serbia, passed the job on to his son-in-law Bosko, who was sadly not his father-in-law, and management sacked him. Val replaced him.

I've cleaned off the top of the refrigerator, but I have no place to put anything inside it if I need to empty it.  Sometimes a studio apartment is a pain in the ass when you need shelf space.

Yes, to live comfortably one either needs a very LARGE studio or to be a real minimalist. I am not a minimalist, but it's an interesting experiment.

I understand your frustration. Large appliances used to last 20-25 years, and I think they could again, but it's more profitable to make them cheaply. How many people would pay extra for better quality? I'm one who will, but there's still a limit on how much more I'll pay. And I'm definitely in the minority.

Do you own the refrigerator, Elmore, or does the apartment complex own it?

The apartment owns it.  I got a new stove and fridge in 2012, and today the service man pronounced the fridge dead.  I will be getting a new one on Friday afternoon.

Yay!

DR Elmore:

I'm glad to hear they "totaled" the fridge. Seriously, you don't want one that has failed to that extent. In my experience, it's extremely unlikely that they could really repair it, so I'm happy to know that they readily admitted that and are taking the correct action.

My thoughts exactly. I often wonder how landlords call out a repairman when it's so clear that it's a replacement instead of a repair, but they're not the ones who have to live with no refrigeration for another few days.

I'm glad it'll be over soon.
