Well, you've read the notes, the notes had one from column A and two new titles, and now it is time for you to post until the new cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: PROPENSITY!
-
Topic of the Day: non-stereophonic albums and record players were before my time, so everything that I've gotten have been stereophonic. ::)
;)
-
CDs have been ordered! Can't wait to hear the entire CDs...I'm listening to the samples now.
-
Off to bed, then it's back to work.
Have a good day, all!
-
Hello.
-
Good morning, all!
-
Not a great night of sleep, and the two dreams that I did remember have faded since I woke and fed the cats. At some point I woke and accidentally punched Thatch in the face. My hand connected with his four fangs, so I need to check his teeth when I'm near him.
-
My first stereo record player was through the Columbia Record Club, and my first stereo recording was Bye Bye Birdie.
-
Today I hope to proofread that score and parts; I don't want this to drag on.
-
DR JohnG, that kindle price is good for 20 Zola novels, but that means the books are all 19th century public domain translations, most certainly bowdlerized for decent English readers. I shudder to think what happened to Nana and her torrid backstage life as a grande horizontale in one of those translations.
-
DR Ginny, I'm so sorry to hear about your latest Covid-19 concerns. I hope everything works out well for Rob and his family.
-
Oh, how I thrilled to "One From Column A" back in the day! So zany and fun. I don't suppose those are still available to read anywhere online.
-
Good morning, all.
-
Last night, I attended an online presentation, the successor to the one I did a few weeks ago. This one was on the topic of "Musical Maps," and was an overview of music notation and how it has developed over time. It was fun and interesting.
-
I don’t think I’ve ever recalled what my own first stereo record was, but I know the first ones in the house were my dad’s Mitch Miller albums from when they bought their first stereo and joined the Columbia Record Club. I believe there was some Ferrante and Teicher, and I definitely remember us thrilling to some Andy Williams albums. The first cast recordings were South Pacific (mono, of course, but one of those horrible “electronically rechanneled for stereo” copies), and the soundtrack recording (stereo) of The Music Man. BK remembers the Ben-Hur box set; mine was the King of Kings one.
Their big record player purchase was a Sears Silvertone walnut floor-standing console, with AM/FM, and I do remember being enchanted with that year’s stereo broadcast of a performance of Messiah we had just attended at the beautiful new church where I was taking organ lessons. Heard on that first FM stereo on a Saturday morning a week after the concert, I was blown away by both the beauty of the music and by the sound of it all. I never thought of this before now, but I should try to find out if that recording exists anywhere.

Knowing nothing of this except for the few allusions to it that BK has made, I’d sure like to see a few examples myself.
-
Good morning to all.
-
My main dream from last night remains elusive, too. It’s “there”, trying to break through, but no luck so far. Maybe something today will trigger it.
-
Last night I sat down and watched the Indicator release of SWEET CHARITY. It’s a beautiful thing, and all the more infuriating for its obnoxious lack of entr’acte and exit music.
I haven’t yet read through enough of the technical stuff, but BK surely knows this: What was the film’s original sound design -- mono or two-channel stereo for 35mm, and surround for the 70mm? And was that a blowup?
-
Good morning, all.
-
Along with kitty cleanup I did a Daddy cleanup and took a nice bath. I still have to make the bed and order a few groceries. It's another rainy day so it's quite dark outside.
-

I agree. I have been reading newer translations where I have the book, which hasn’t been available for the lesser-known titles, like Le Reve. I’m reading them in Zola’s chronological order, so I haven’t reached Nana or Germinal yet.

To Thatch's dismay, I forced his mouth open and checked his teeth. To my relief all are intact. He's now avoiding me.
-
I slept most of the night through, so all I want to do is sleep.

I think we can all guess which of Thatch’s lists DR Elmore is on today.

Thursday. All day......

Well this morning I toddled over to OLLIE'S - Good stuff cheap! - because there was something in this week's flyer that I wanted. And I had also been emailed a 15% off entire purchase coupon code.
I found what I wanted - the Copper Fit face mask.....sort of a girdle for your face.....but it's nice and it was only $4.99.....so I bought one for my own self and one for my sister Paula.
I also bought a bag of Malomars.......AND.....they had the two volume set of The Encyclopedia of New Yorker Cartoons - for $19.99.....which cost me only $16.99 with my coupon.....so I am glad I motored over.
-
I have indeed purchased the BEN BAGLEY new release.....if it doesn't come in today's mail - I will file a PayPal dispute.
-
TOD:
I got a record player for my 12th birthday.....and proceeded to buy many 45 rpm records. I also bought an album now and then. Of course my record player didn't know the difference between a mono recording and a stereo recording.
I had a few albums - probably the first STEREO LP I purchased was one from The Kirby Stone Four.....which was wonderful. I thought it was the height of sophistication!

-
My record player had a flip stylus and you could flip it to play stereo albums even though the sound wasn't stereo.......
-
Our first family stereo was a tv/phono/radio combination.
It was great, but you couldn't play records if somebody wanted to watch TV.
Probably Johnny Mathis and South Pacific (movie) and Bye Bye Birdie (Cast album) were our first stereo LPs. My parents were big country music fans....so that's mostly what we had....album wise.
The monster looked something like this:

Too much me on this page.

I thought I had a recording of the Kirby Stone Four singing the score of Tenderloin, including a few cut numbers, as I recall, but I can find no record that such a recording existed. I also had a recording of The Pastors singing Tenderloin as well/

I want Malomars.
-
We are having our AC replaced. Because the new units are larger than the old ones, it has to go on the roof instead of the ground.
-
Because we have a 1960s house, things are smaller.
-
And because we had a room addition back in the 90s, trying to put in new ductwork in both the old and new has created complications.
-
I don't know what they are going to do. It seems they can't physically access the crawlspace in the newer part of the house.
-
And Leonard is hiding under the futon in Sandra's old room.
-
They were looking in the corner of the living room and saying "That's the only place it can go." I don't know what they are talking about.
-
But it looks like the grandson will be getting a huge box to play in.
-
All very interesting, DR Laura.

Thatch hides whenever anyone shows up. Stella and Annabelle are the Welcome Wagon.

Malomars are available. I wonder if I see any this year.
-
I'm up, I'm up - five hours of sleep.
-
Some decent orders this morning, but not like the last two - hopefully more coming, though :)
-
I'll see if I can find the link, but I believe all the One from Column A stuff is still archived at the Stephen Sondheim Stage. What's really fun about it is it chronicles all my NY trips during that time.

I saw a atory on old-fashioned candies that are still available. You can get ribbon candy for something like $36 for 12 ounces. Penny candy for more than a penny. Doesn’t come with the dust, either.

Found it. Read through a few - there are missteps in the first fifteen or so but after that it's pretty much on track. And here is the kind of thing you will learn: My first visit to eBay was on December 22, 1997. Scroll all the way down to get to column one, which began on September 22.

Fantastic. Keeping that tab open to read later.
-
All very interesting, DR Laura.
Yes it is though I am very sorry they didn't have the old size to make an easy replacement.
-
And Leonard is hiding under the futon in Sandra's old room.
It sounds like he found a good spot to hide.
-
I did a quick read of the December 22 entry. Boy, that describes it. I estimate I got there just under three months later.
-
Got another hour of sleep. Now I'll mosey on over to the mail place to pick up a package, and then I'll think about food.
-
Good Afternoon - I don't "get" the Ben Bagley thing. Are they cabaret things? Anyway - I'm off to teach a guitar lesson. When I get home, I'm going to put the boxes I've packed into the car because they are going somewhere else and not the new place. I figured that out last night when I was running out of space to put things. If it's not going to the new place, get it out of the apartment ASAP!

PAGE THREE DANCE!!

All very interesting, DR Laura.
Very interesting, indeed.
Agreed! And with Laura's last post, she's reached a posting plateau! :D

I bookmarked that tab and sent an e-mail to my home e-mail address so that I can bookmark it there!

Nice one, DR Laura!
-
Congrats to DR LAURA on her millstone.
-
I, too, have bookmarked the Column A treasure trove.
-
DR JANE I appreciated your comment last night - however MY current situation is NOTHING compared with NOT being able to see your new grand daughter in person.
You and DR GINNY - I don't have words that can even begin to describe the feelings and situation......it is terrible.....
-
Sales vibes for Kritzerland!
-
Today was indeed mopping day - so the floors look.....well.....as if they've been mopped.
-
Good afternoon.
-
I don't keep track of posts, so I guess it's a good thing all ya'll do.
-
They figured something out. I don't understand it, but I guess my husband does. Tomorrow the crane comes to put the thing on the roof.
-
The fella handed me the thick instruction booklet for the thermostat. It has a usb cord thing. I don't know what I am supposed to attach it to.
-
Leonard finally came out and took a LOOOONG time looking around.
-
I am glad they figured out a solution, DR Laura. Santa will have some new company on your rooftop.
-
I am really thrilled that we can still enjoy the old ONE FROM COLUMN A columns. Thanks for finding and posting that link, bk!
-
Congratulations on the milestone, Laura.

You and DR GINNY - I don't have words that can even begin to describe the feelings and situation......it is terrible.....
That is sweet of you.
We are all coping with much these days. Not seeing our children, or friends & their children, or going places, etc. Hard but I can cope with it. The baby has grown and I will never have held her. The missed cuddles and interacting in person...all that is what puts me over the edge. Had we hope for another baby opportunity or had a previous grandchild even that would have made this easier.
All that and yet I know I have much more than many people do right now and I do count my blessings. For one, can you imagine living like this in a bad marriage! Those poor folks.

Sales vibes for Kritzerland!

I am so excited. I have been invited to join a FB friend on WeMe, the social network with no ads, no spyware, no BS. Of course it doesn't mention the fact that it is where Anti-Vaxxers and Conspiracy Theorists Thrive.

Hello, everyone.

Installation repair vibes to DR Laura.
I hope it goes smoothly for you and you're happy with the work.

Yes, moving day tends to be chaotic. Keep it simple.

I didn't know you "knew" BK back then.

Today my personal grocery shopper, Jason, did another TJ's run for me. It just so happens that my favorite little vegan restaurant is right across the street, so I asked him to pick up a take-out order for me, too. Very convenient. Unfortunately, the item I wanted most at TJ's -- and one of the reasons for the run -- was out of stock. But they did have apple pie. Every year about this time I think about pie and I was looking forward to an apple pie. The ones I've bought at Ralph's are terrible, but TJ's are usually good. I have that to look forward to later today.
I could really get used to having someone do my shopping. I do like to shop in-store now and then, but that doesn't need to be weekly. I definitely like this arrangement.
-
Health vibes to all!
TTFN.

Jane, you had your own milestone.

I am very glad you found Jason. He is the kind of personal shopper I would want if I needed one. While still a bit stressful shopping these days it helps our parking is easy and almost everyone is wearing a mask. Keith & I split up for the much of the time collecting different items.

Jane, you had your own milestone.
I had no clue.

Got some packages, came home, and ordered from California Pizza Kitchen - just didn't want to cook. It took a full hour for it to arrive, and when it's like that one knows the deal - the food will be ice cold, which the roasted garlic chicken pizza thing was. Not only that, but the driver didn't text or ring the bell when she dropped the food at the front door so it sat out there getting even colder for an additional five minutes. I had to microwave the slices, which makes the food not as good - I ate it and I'm full and have now eaten my 1,080 calories, but I called and got a credit for the meal.
-
Also tried to deposit a check in the ATM at the local bank branch - it had me confirm the amount, then refused to do the deposit, returning the check (last time it ate the check) and giving me a "we couldn't complete the deposit or help with this account" - which of course makes any sane person worry that somehow it's been compromised. I called the bank and confirmed the account was fine and I got very strong about them about the ATMs at that location and said they had to get someone out there to fix them. I then deposited the check with a teller and told her the same thing. I've never had trouble like that in Studio City.
-
Otherwise, I chose one of the three songs I needed to choose and am pondering the other two, but realized I still have one more to choose for another singer who's doing only one song, so I need to think about THAT, too.
-
Listening to the last album in the Entremont box, then I have no idea what's next listening-wise.
-
I got Doctor Sleep from the library the other day and before watching it, I decided to watch The Shining, which I haven't seen since it first came out. So, tonight, I'm starting the journey.

When I was a newly turned fourteen-year-old, I saw West Side Story - December of 1961. Of course, I became obsessed with it seeing it once a week thereafter for about fifteen weeks in a row. I bought the soundtrack, but also bought anything that said West Side Story - jazz versions, the B'way cast album, and whatever cover albums I could find. At some point, I came upon a wonderful-looking Warner Bros. album that had been released in 1958. The top-billed piece was a ballet score to a ballet from the co-director of the West Side Story film, Jerome Robbins. Called N.Y. Export - Op. Jazz from Ballets USA by Robert Prince. I had no idea what that was, but I bought it for the companion piece, the symphonic dances from West Side Story, a wonderful performance of that. I played that album to death. I've thought about it over the years, but have never heard the main piece again because it's never been on CD. Then I saw the actual ballet and loved it, then found a not so legal download of the album and got that. It was mono, which seemed wrong to me, so I searched everywhere online and the hundreds of copies of the album I found were all mono - my memory told me I absolutely had a stereo version because I bought no mono albums at that point, but still the overwhelming proof of mono was staring me in the face over and over again. I began to think I was just having one of the few misremembering times. I searched one last time and what I thought was another mono LP was, in fact, a commercially released reel-to-reel tape, which was - in stereo, of course, plain as day. So, I wasn't crazy after all, but in 1958 Warner Bros. was just starting to do stereo - Auntie Mame being one of those albums and John Paul Jones another. So, I'm imagining they didn't press that many stereo copies of an album that was never going to be a big seller. But I got the reel-to-reel and it's on its merry way to me now so I'll have it transferred to WAV files right away. But I also contacted my licensing guy at Rhino to talk about maybe issuing it on CD if they'd give me a good deal or at least couple it with something else, as it's only forty-two minutes. I haven't heard back from him, but I can't imagine their keeping any kind of regular hours there and who knows if they're doing any business at all. But it would be a kick to release it on CD.
-
Good evening!
-
Glad you're feeling better, DR TCB!
-
I hope you can, bk! That would be swell.

At least I think that's what the kids are saying, these days.

Bruce congratulations on your find & vibes you get a good deal.

Apparently on Colbert last night, Olivia Coleman (whom you may know from Broadchurch) taught the talk show host how to say "yes" like Queen Elizabeth, whom she will be portraying in the new season of The Crown. This is how her dialect coach taught her: say the word spelled E-A-R-S, not hitting the "R" too much.
Try it! :)

Try it! :)
That would take a lot of practice.

Well Holy Moly.
I was reading BK's post about the Jerome Robbins/Bernstein album with great interest because I remembered finding that at a used record jernt somewhere along the years. Didn't know if I still had it, because I'd dumped a lot of records that were not of sufficient quality or no longer of interest for any reason, but I went to the shelf, and...
Voila!

I figured watching The Shining wasn't horrific enough. I had to read the instructions for the prep before my colonoscopy Monday. Now that is horrifying.

Well, that reinvents "Monday" all over again, sir.

Okay, now here's the kicker about the record album. When I pulled it off the shelf I was disappointed to see what looked like a mono issue of the Warner Bros. album. See the jacket's front cover, above. I didn't even notice the little red "Stereo" thingy on the back side. But I took the record out, and found two wonderful things. First, it was in a quality sleeve that indicated I'd cleaned it on the machine and found it to be a keeper. Second, the label had that beautiful Warner Bros. "S T E R E O" across the bottom. Ain't that something?
So, BK most certainly did have it on stereo LP...but they all look, at a glance of the jacket, like they're mono. Some may not be. But he's got the reel to reel tape coming, which is all the better. What great discoveries all around, eh?
-
If only my big receiver's input that I use for the phono preamp hadn't gone on the blink, I could be listening to this right now. I'll be rigging something up with another receiver in the meantime, possibly as soon as tomorrow, but we'll see.
-
Great album cover there, ChasSmith.

Good night, all.

And there it is - STEREO. In red at the very top of the rear panel - my guess is they didn't want to spend full color dough on the cover to have a mono and stereo version, like they did for Auntie Mame - at least I think they did - have to research. But every copy I've seen on the Internet is mono with a gray record label rather than the gold stereo label. ChasSmith, if it's easy for you can you transfer to AIFFs or WAV just so I can hear?
-
Finished with my viewing.
-
Just researched Auntie Mame and John Paul Jones - exactly the same - same front cover for mono and stereo and a gray mono tiny thing on the top of the back cover or a red stereo thing and then of course either the gray or gold LP label. I wonder when they began using "stereo" on the front cover. Rome Adventure has it but that's 1963 or 64, I think. Will research further.
-
So, sometime in 1959 they made the switch. 77 Sunset Strip didn't have it on the front cover, but by the time of The Nun's Story soundtrack later that year, it was there. So, that's solved.
-
So, the front covers on all the 1958 and some of 1959 front covers had nothing about stereo and, in fact, had the mono release number, i.e. B1240. But the back cover would have that little red stereo square and the proper stereo release number of BS1240. But I think they ultimately saw the folly of their ways because their plastic shrink wrap back then had their own Warner Bros. logo on it and STEREO writ large. I'll have a photo in the notes.
-
Love this stuff. How did you research that?
I’m out on errands in the morning but should hopefully be able to transfer this tomorrow afternoon. I need to bypass the amp with its weird little problem and run directly into the digital recorder...which ought to work. Pray for that baby.

Yes it is. Not having watched The Shining I can't compare them.

Greetings.

I thought that The Shining was MUCH worse than my actual colonoscopy prep. I really didn't have much trouble with it...but maybe I was just one of the lucky ones. ::)

Hi, Tom.
-
ChasSmith, that's pretty cool about having that album!
-
When I was a youngster, I really wanted a record player, but so did my sister. So, for Christmas, My sister got a stereo with detachable speakers; and I got a little mono record player. Of course, my sister was three years older, and I am sure there were doubts that I could take care of anything worth any more.
-
Well, this is fun...Traviata in the days of Corona – The Israeli Opera (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KcLZnkPppbM)! ;D
-
Over the years, I used my record player ten times more than my sister ever used her stereo, but, hey,who is keeping score.

Did she ever give it to you?

I think Chas mentioned earlier today regarding those electronically remastered albums. My mom had the original London cast recording of MY FAIR LADY at her classroom at school. I used to borrow it from time to time just to have something different to listen to.
-
When we lived in Colorado when I was between 4 and 7 years old, my sister took piano lessons and I took accordion lessons (neither of us chose these and I think we each didn't last a year). But when we moved up here to Washington, I started plunking around on her piano, so I took piano lessons and she never took any more music lessons, at all.
-
Anyway, at some point, my parents got me a pair of binoculars and an alarm clock radio. She really wanted those and I didn't care, so we traded...my alarm clock radio and binoculars for her piano! At the time, she loved that alarm clock radio because she could listen to the radio quietly at night, but after almost 40 years, I still have the piano. I haven't taken lessons since college, but when doing theater, I still use it. :)

I had no idea what the difference was between mono and stereo, or what “electronically remastered” meant. I practically memorized Freddie’s song and Higgins “I’ve Grown Accustomed to Her Face.” The problem withe second song was when it got to the lyrics:
“I was serenely independent and content before we met,
Kind of like a habit you can always break and yet.... and yet”
-
The only problem is that the second “And yet” isn’t really suppose to be there, but was the result of being stereo remasteredL. But that was how I learned the song, and it has been Hell trying to unlearn it.

-
Hi, Vixmom. Hi, Tom (again). :)
Sorry, George, I didn’t see your post earlier.
-
Hi George!
-
TCB. the London cast album of My Fair Lady is a completely different recording than the OBC, which is mono. The London cast was the first stereo recording of the score - real stereo - but it's just not as good a performance as the OBC.
-
I know the first 45 I bought with my own money was the Beatles A Hards Day Night, I believe the B side was I Should Have Known Better
-
New notes are up and are LONG.
-
I have no Ida if it was stereo but my record player certainly wasn’t
