Post by: bk on November 23, 2020, 01:03:58 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes came to town along with Hansel and Gretel, and now it is time for you to post until the town cows come home.

BK, I hope you got far enough into the H&G video to hear some of Anna Russell's Witch. I realized that I have the mp3 file for the film soundtrack that was released by RCA in the 1950s.  It's 57 minutes long, so at least 15 minutes of the film were cut for the recording, but it catches the score well.

Thanks, DR Jeanne, for the birthday wishes!   To answer your question:  I meet friends at Starbucks and for lunch a few times a week.  We sit outside.  I guess we won't be able to do that much longer.   Every Saturday I do a video chat with my friends in Scotland.  We watch a Streisand movie or TV special at the same time and discuss it and other things.   On Wednesdays I have a chat with my California friends.  We watch a movie between calls. This week's is "The Misfits."  I also talk to other friends and relatives and video chat with my friends in Greece and England.    I've been watching a lot of stuff on Netflix and Prime.  I just started watching "Monk," which I had never seen before.   I do miss traveling, of course.

It looks like I have my work cut out for me when it comes to Hansel and Gretel. BK’s description of the Eichhorn sounds great. DR Elmore had recommended that one, and the Karajan and Solti (film), each of which is tempting for various reasons.

I guess we won’t be forgetting the day Hansel and Gretel came to town any time soon, will we, kids?

Had a dream in which I had apparently decided to take up flying again because I suddenly realized that it was time for my fourth review lesson to start and I hadn’t even left for it. (The whole bizarre setting is something I’m not even attempting to describe.) I frantically tried to locate my shoes and my bag of supplies, while trying to call to explain I was running late. Then I wasn’t sure about the name of my instructor, and when they asked me for my address, I had to guess at that because I’d just begun living there. Everything (all of this and more) was going to hell in a hand basket, and it was a relief to wake up.

Interesting image there, because RCA’s short lived “SelectaVision” video disc was one of the most reviled formats ever. I wonder if that was the same poor transfer we’re looking at today.

That soundtrack record was on the RCA Camden label. Maybe I can find a good clean copy.

TOD:

Beauty and the Beast
I was about seven when I saw the Cocteau film version, maybe my first foreign film. It was a game changer in terms of visuals. The wall of arms holding candelabras was amazing to my young eyes. Love the story and the animated version, but a good French remake in color.

Cinderella:
So many versions, but my favorites are the Rodgers and Hammerstein with Julie Andrews and Leslie Ann Warren as well as Slipper and the Rose. I really like BK’s compilation CD.

Hansel and Gretel
Not the action flicks, but the Humperdinck opera, the Barbara Cook TV version (I know it only from the score)

Pinocchio
The original story, the Disney, a live production I saw with an incredible series of puppets. Not the Stephen Schwartz musical.

This afternoon, while doing a fairly considerable kitchen cleanup, I cranked up the Big Speakers and listened to the Met telecast sans video straight through. I didn't stop the cleaning, but I would just stop and shake my head at what I'm still calling some of the most beautiful music I've heard.

Which leads me to a digression, soon to follow...

So, my digression:

The Met conductor on that H&G broadcast is Thomas Fulton, a name I recognized, but I never knew anything about him and
I have no idea if I've heard him do anything else. When he walked into the pit and took his bow, I very cattily thought "okay, here's the schlub they gave the kids' opera to". But as far as I could tell, he was fine and the orchestra is magnificent.

But I was curious about Thomas Fulton, so I googled and found he'd died in 1994 at the ripe old age of 44. Holy shit. The obits I found are brief and give very little information about him. They mention a few other places he conducted. One was Ravinia, so, maybe a Levine connection? The cause of death given was kidney failure.

DR Elmore, do you know anything more about Mr. Fulton?

Anyhoo, the listening was wonderful, and whetted my appetite for my upcoming viewing at an optimal time later in the week.

Food will be here in thirty minutes.  Meanwhile, listening to Hansel and Gretel with the two young people in the roles.  From their photos in the booklet they seem like they're around thirteen of fourteen, so not exactly children, but hearing their young voices is kind of fun in those roles, although I must say that Anna Moffo and Helen Donath pull the youthfulness off pretty well.  But with this young voices thing, I've never heard a weirder mix or blend in my life - haven't been able to get used to it yet.  In the overture there seem to be no strings at all on the left - they're bunched together center/right - then wayyyyy over on the left is a trombone playing as if he was doing a solo - in the other recordings, the orchestra blends beautifully, but this is just plain wacky.  And the mixing engineer was having perhaps a little too much fun with the panning knob.  But I do like the cast very much and the young folks are charming - not great singers like Moffo and Donath and von Stade, but charming nonetheless.

I'm still at work, but am finally leaving.  Today was the day that I needed to have the monthly invoices report done so that the checks can be printed and sent to our vendors.  Now that that's done, I'm off to my sister's to help straighten the tree that they just got. ::)

Be back later.

Started a YA novel called The House in the Cerulean Sea. Interesting. Cute. I hope it doesn’t get too cute.

Thanks to DR VIXMOM for reminding me of the difficulties radiation and chemo can have on teeth.  I had completely forgotten about that.

The first dentist can't get me in until February - the second doesn't take my insurance.....so I am still looking.....and looking like in inbreed with a missing bottom front tooth.

I sympathize and empathize Jack.  My four bottom center teeth decided to break off at the gum line one day...I opted for implants instead of a bridge.  I highly recommend them.  The cost was much higher but it’s like having my own teeth again.

Well I have an appointment with Dr. Todd Taylor at 2 p.m. on Monday, November 30.

His nightmare is about to begin.
Congratulations, May he be gentle, expert and inexpensive

Too cute would not be good,  I like YA books and look forward to knowing if it stays enjoyable.

I gotta tell you.  I had to take an allergy pill earlier and it hasn't really been helping yet - and I wish it would.  I'm not sneezing or anything, just a runny nose, which is irritating.
