Well, you've read the notes, the notes were actually not that long, and now it is time for you to post until the long, long cows come home.

Topic of the Day:  I must confess that I haven't listened to Donald's radio show in quite a while.  I think I just forgot about it. :-\ Very sorry about that.  I'm always listening to something at work, so I can easily listen to The Broadway Radio Show while I'm working.  I just need to get back into the habit!

BK, I've been thinking about that recording of H&G with two children in the roles.  It's a marketing ploy.  Two children could never sing those roles in an opera house over that Wagnerian orchestra without a lot of miking.  Luckily, most mezzo-sopranos who sing Hansel also have the boy roles of Cherubino and Octavian under their belts.

DR ChasSmith, the gossip at the time of Thomas Fulton's death was that he was an AIDS victim. Kidney failure, brain tumor, cancer, etc. were often euphemisms to protect the victims' families from the scourge of telling the world the victim was gay. One of my most vivid memories of Opera News magazine between, say, 1986-1996 is how large the obituary section was.

Sorry, I've lost track --

Which is the recording with the kids singing the leads?

While I like the idea of hearing it with younger voices, I guess there's a reason composers write things the way they do. :)  Apparently ol' Engelbert knew when it was time for a trouser role.

DR Elmore speaks of the Wagnerian orchestra. There are musical passages that definitely brought to my mind a Wagnerian or Straussian-with-an-R moment.

Same with me, re forgetting that the interviews are right here. I've enjoyed a number of them but I never succeeded in making it a regular thing in spite of several attempts. The same thing used to happen to me with Peter Filichia's column.

Here's why it happens:  Once I'm into my morning HHW routine (reading the rest of last night's posts, then reading the notes, then reading what's posted so far today, then jumping in), I'm mired in all of this activity and I no longer think about what else is out there.

I've thought of a solution that should work for me. In Safari I have a folder of bookmarks I call "Forums, Blogs, etc.", the topmost of which are HHW, HTF, and a couple of other sites I keep up with regularly. I'll add a new bookmark that links directly to the interviews. That'll keep me cognizant of it, and there should then be no excuses. Let's see how that works.

Humperdinck was a Wagner disciple who assisted in the premiere of Parsifal.  He may even have some music in the scene changes.

So was Mahler.  His letter to Humperdinck saying he wanted to conduct the premiere is quite complimentary.

Yes, the kids doing Hansel and Gretel don't have the power to project and it's very obvious once mom and dad start singing.  It was fun to hear once, but the orchestra balance is just too weird and I'm now thinking they did it because of the kids, who they keep panning from left to right for no real reason and I think it's to get them away from the strings and brass as much as possible, which makes perfect sense - keep the band centered for the most part and the kids panned hard left and right.

I am back from:

1. A masonry place where they told me what thing I need, which is readily available at Home Depot or Lowe's. It's hard to find and they told me where it would be.

2. Home Depot, where I picked up a few of them and hopefully one's the right fit. (It's a locking bolt thingy.)

3. The power equipment place where I picked up a thing I thought was going to be $15 or less, and it's $30. Joy.

4. Shop Rite, for my last three or four things and a couple of others -- and that's it, baby. I'm done.

But I had always loved grabbing a nice lunch in their regular places prior to that. The simpler comfortable style of those jernts is what Marie Callender's was all about. At least back then. I don't know if it's changed since.

I misread that sentence as the main reason the restaurant closed was because of DR Chas and his friends’ late night drinking parties there,

my goodness, I thought, what shenanigans DID they get up to?

Marie Callender's sounds like the perfect jernt to order the turkey dinner from.

I'm still a little sad when reminded that their Wilshire Blvd. "flagship" restaurant is no more, mainly because a few co-workers and I enjoyed going there occasionally for late drinks and dinner during a couple of years in the late '80s. But I had always loved grabbing a nice lunch in their regular places prior to that. The simpler comfortable style of those jernts is what Marie Callender's was all about. At least back then. I don't know if it's changed since.

Singdaw, which photos have I embiggened?  I don't remember what they could be.

Now back to another Schreker opera, this one entitled Der Ferne Klang.  Wonderful music.  Have no idea what the story is - perhaps I'll read the synopsis.  This is the third opera by this guy and I've really enjoyed them all, I must say.  I have one more here and one on its way.  I wonder if all of them have recordings - there are nine.

DR George - I don't know, but it seems whenever you quote my post containing a picture, in your post it is bigger.

Ah, well!

DR George - I don't know, but it seems whenever you quote my post containing a picture, in your post it is bigger.

Ah, well!

Oh, I see.  So, when one uploads a picture to the HHW gallery to be attached to a message, it needs to be less than 192 KB.  The width and height dimensions, however, don't matter, so that if a small enough-in-size image is uploaded, and its dimensions are wider than a certain number of pixels, HHW automatically smallerizes it in the original message.  However, if you click on the picture after it's posted, it embiggens to its original dimensions.
Title: Re: BEEN A LONG, BEEN A LONG, BEEN A LONG, BEEN A LONG DAY
Post by: George on November 24, 2020, 07:45:16 PM
Now, when I'm going to quote your (or anyone else's) message, I right-click* on the link below the picture and select "Copy shortcut," then paste that copied shortcut within the [ img ] and [ /img ] codes (without the spaces) and that creates the hyperlink to the original uploaded picture, but at its original dimensions, not at the smallerized dimensions.  That's why it can be smaller in your original post, then naturally bigger in my quoted repost.  If this manual copying and pasting of the image shortcut isn't done, then the picture doesn't show in a quoted post because the original uploaded picture isn't really a hyperlink to somewhere else.  I hope that that all makes sense!

I discovered that years ago and have just been doing it. :)

* I only have a Windows computer, not a Mac, so I don't know how that works in Appleworld.

Schreker got pretty wild in his late opera Christophorus - well, it's dedicated to Schoenberg and that's what it sounds like for some of it.  It's interesting, certainly, and has its moments but I prefer the earlier stuff, which is gorgeous.
