Title: WHERE ELSE ON ALL THE INTERNET?
Post by: bk on April 27, 2005, 12:02:46 AM
Well, you've read the notes, and where else on all the Internet could you have read such notes?  Nowhere, that's where.  And now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - right now, they're off reading some other site.

Well, I suppose I shall toddle off to the bedroom environment.

I am intrigued by DtM's posting of the Capital Album Of Arthur Murray's Lambada (the Forbidden Dance)!

DRJOSE will be a Man On A Mission tomorrow ~~~~~~~ Vibes!

Where else on ALL of the INTERNET can you receive such vibes and encouragement.

MR BK mentioned in the notes earlier this week that he would reveal the title and some of the songs on the Guy Haines CD.  Of course those of us who were at the Sparkling Chat know some of the answers.......

My question for ASK BK day - and perhaps DR CP can help with this:

What is a continuity and what is an adaptation?  Why would you need both?  Or does a person who writes one depend upon the work of the other rather than the original material?

Well....I have just stayed up all night reading a book that DRGINNY mentioned last week, and which I bought from an Amazon seller for about $5......The Devil In The White City by Eric Larson.  It is a non-fiction book about a serial killer who lived in Chicago at the time of the Columbian Exposition World's Fair in 1893.

If a book about such subjects interests you - you would be hard pressed to find a better one.  Well written and researched.  Not for everyone.  Thanks to DRGINNY for mentioning it.

I just realized that I forgot to post your Allison Hayes Picture of the Week!  ;D

Here she is as Priscilla Longworth in a publicity photo from her days on ABC's soap opera GENERAL HOSPITAL.

A rare autographed photo that recently sold for $41 on EBAY!

Well, I seem to be back in better shape than I was yesterday. I went home and while Anthony worked on a craft project (he had the evening off from rehearsal, they open Friday and since it's an Equity showcase they are required to have one day a week off so it was yesterday) I went to bed (at 4pm). I slept until about 6:30, made some soup, ate it while I watched Jeopardy then went back to bed at 7:30 and slept until 6am.

I have no questions and I would never make a statement of CALUMNY against anyone on this here board (Calumny - noun: A vicious false accusation of a crime that is intentionally designed to damage one's reputation)

This post is brought to you by the year 1971, which is also the year I graduated from Coon Rapids Senior High School. I wore a felt dove on the top of my graduation cap (others did also) to protest the war. The administration had gotten wind of our plans and said that we were NOT to do such a thing. Our caps would be checked as we walked out of the gymnasium to the football field for the ceremony and anyone having a dove on their cap would be prevented from leaving the building. Well, there was a flurry of activity while a group of us removed our doves, but they were never collected by anyone. We pocketed our felt and walked out of the gym to the football field. As we crossed the street to the ceremony, those of us planning our little subversion just put the doves back on the tops of our caps and proceeded merrily on our way. Methinks the administration knew this would happen but were giving lip service to the idea that we shouldn't wear "peace" symbols on our graduation caps. We both won.

Question for Elmoore:

Do you know if it was Trude Riteman or Frederick Loewe who wrote The Sword Dance for Brigadoon. It doesn't sound like anything like Loewe ever composed so I am guessing it is Trude.

I seem to have a problem playing Disney DVDs on my computer player. I do not have the same problem with any other company. Does anyone know if they have some kind of encoding block that prevents one from playing it on a computer DVD?

Good morning, Ben and Michael!

I slept late this morning, and I'm totally disorganized!  I've got a DARLING OF THE DAY meeting at 12:30, but I'm very vague as to the remainder of today's schedule.  I think there's a maintenance man coming in to tune up the office copier this morning, so I've got to get there soon.

DRBen, I think I'll be coming to Anthony's show next week with DRRodzinski, who's heading off to the wilds of Montreal this weekend for some debauchery involving an impending wedding.  I am the designated bail poster.  I hope the opening night performance goes well, and the show has a large turnout.  I'm looking forward to seeing it.

Trude told me, when I asked about this, that for BRIGADOON and ONE TOUCH OF VENUS she gave Lowe and Weill the rhythmic patterns deMille needed and they wrote the dance music.  She said that the situation changed with Lowe after he got to know her and her work better.   Don't forget, though, that there is a vocal line in the Sword Dance, and all the choral work in BRIGADOON is by Lowe as well.

DR JRand - I'm glad you found Devil in the White City so satisfying.  "Enjoy" isn't really the right word for that book, is it?

Much music acquired yesterday. A few LPs purchased on the way to Elmore's after work. Then Elmore gave me a CD collection featuring Mac and Katie Kissoon's "Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep". It also features the Bobette's morbid sequel to their hit song, "Mr. Lee", entitled "I Shot Mr. Lee". Now why would they want to go and do that?

THEN, I got a package from Tomovoz that had two further CD collections of classic and rare tunes from the late 50s, early 60s. Quite an awesome haul! Thank you, gents.

Also, picked up the second half of Wheeler and Woolsey.

Don't some Disney DVDs have DVD-ROM features that install an interface on your hard drive so you can see the movie on the computer?

I know the budget releases like THE BOATNICKS probably don't have it (or FAMILY BAND), but the cartoons like BEAUTY AND THE BEAST do, I think. So, maybe, if you install that interface, the regular Disney DVDs will play through that.

I enjoyed the recap show for DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES on SUnday, but I think I'm going to take a pass on the LOST recap show tonight. Rehearsals and memorizing cut into a large portion of my day now, and there is just no time to see everything I'd like to see. I'm recording a few shows like ALIAS and EYES and '24' that I'm fairly confident won't be repeated this summer. The rest I can catch up with later.

Didn't get the Doris Day box of DVDs yesterday, so it should arrive today. Alas, no time to watch anything in it until Friday unless the director decides he doesn't need me at rehearsal on Thursday. I know a good portion of next week is going to working with the Cagelles which should free up a couple of nights at least for me.

TALK OF LAST NIGHT'S TAR:

A few things I didn't get to watch live:  I didn't realize that Rob's fake comment caused U/Joyce and M/Gretchen to catch an earlier flight. That is too funny.  But really Rob did go to 3 travel agents. So he did cover his bases.  What was up with all those t. agents not knowing about the earlier flight???

I was happy Ron and Kelly weren't eliminated. Even though I don't love them, and it would be easier for Romber to win with them gone, I still didn't think they deserved to go.  They have been extremely competitive.

In last night's show U/Joyce were the strongest.  Meredith and Gretchen basically followed them. However I was impressed with her climbing that wall. Very nice!  Next week does look good.

And as for Idol, I liked Bo best i think. And then Anthony. I liked the montages of their lives at home.  It's amazing how many of them come from such small towns.  I do think Scott will go home tonight.

And how cute was Heather Locklear's daughter. Loved that part.

Good Morning!

Well... I think I'll be on a mission later on today... Hopefully, sooner rather than later.

-This whole laptop crap really has me down in the dumps.  Very inopportune timing.  But what can you do?

I installed some spyware/adware software on my roomie's computer lat night, and it seems to be doing the trick.  There is one pesky thing that keeps popping up, but it doesn't seem to be crippling the system like it used to, so...  We shall see...
Title: Re:WHERE ELSE ON ALL THE INTERNET?

DR Michael Shayne - I believe the Disney DVD issue is a copy-protection device.  I have some non-Disney DVDs that will not play in my computer.  Additionally, there was a whole batch of music CDs which came out over the past couple of years with the same sort of "safeguard" in place.  I remember the brouhaha over all of that mess, but I'm not sure if it's been completely discoutinued.

*I also know that depending upon the model and speed of your CD/DVD-ROM drive, some media will not play due to a slight incompatibility issue.

I'm sure DR Francois may have some insight/info once he logs on this weekend.

I think, though I may be wrong, but Rob kept asking if about a 3:30 am flight as Ron had overheard Uchenna say something about 3:30...and I think Ron misheard and then passed it on to Rob. So I think Rob was asking the travel agents the wrong thing. I thought it was amusing and it was fun to see Rob a bit worried for a change.

I was VERY proud of Gretchen...but she scared me, this 66 year old lady scaling that wall!

I am also very much liking U/Joyce, and it warms my heart the nice things they say about and do for Gretchen and Meredith.

I wouldn't mind if Ron one, but I wouldn't want Kelly to win! LOL! She bugs me!

I didn't say anything about going because I didn't want to get your hopes up in case I wasn't able to get a CD. Boy, was I wrong about thinking there would be no line. I took one look and decided to come back downtown. If I had joined the line I would have been on it for, I'm sure, the full two hours of the giveaway. Some people got there very, very early. Far too early for me who is just getting back to feeling well. I'm sure it will be on the local news (maybe national also) today.

Not sure what you mean here.  An adaptation, as far as I know, is adapting material from another medium.  A continuity, if you're speaking of a cutting continuity script, is an exact transcription of what ends up in the film - each line of dialogue accompanied by each camera shot and action.

I watched the first four episodes of my "Dynasty: The Complete First Season" DVD last night.

And WOW!  I'm in love with the show all over again.  The first three episodes are actually the series opener, called "Oil" with Blake scrambling to recover whatever he can from a mideast uprising overtaking all his oil plants.  Meanwhile, he's getting married to Krystal Jennings and Denver society is either agog or aghast.

What a wonderful wallow from the 80s. It's a retro hoot watching the show.  Some of it is howlingly ridiculous, but it's never dull.

And how magnificent IS Pamela Sue Martin as Fallon?  TRULY magnificent.  When the actress left the show a significant element was lost...and it wasn't something replaceable.

The fun thing about "Dynasty" is that both Carrington children had acting replacements.  First, Steven (Al Corely) was replaced, and it was done via an oil-rig explosion at sea.  Steven not only had reconstructive facial surgery, but had a complete body lift as he went from a swimmer's build to a football player's physique (Jack Coleman).

And then Fallon (Pamela Sue Martin)...she had a car accident and was in a coma.  Not only did she forget who she was, she forget what she looked like and how she sounded.  She was replaced by a British actress (Emma Samms) of extraordinarily little depth or personality.  Poor Fallon.

I could have watched entire first season (it started in the middle of a season and was only 13 episodes that year) in one sitting, but the ugly truth of another workday stared me in the face and forced me to bed.
Title: Re:WHERE ELSE ON ALL THE INTERNET?
Post by: Matt H. on April 27, 2005, 10:16:32 AM
The only thing that truly impressed me in the first season of DYNASTY was the representation of Ted Denard, Steven's ex-lover. He was handsome, masculine, in charge - exactly the opposite of the Billy Crystal/SOAP stereotype we had had on ABC (though Crystal toned down the effeminacy later in the run). And I liked Al Corley's Steven, but he was (to my memory) not a hugely expressive actor.

Miss Day arrived here today, but, alas, no time to watch the lovely lady. Maybe Friday.

I'm glad they're going to release THE DORIS DAY SHOW, but naturally they're starting with that less-than=thrilling first season where she's on her dad's ranch/farm. I liked the other four seasons when she came to San Francisco and became a career gal.

I had a very good time at Spamalot but DRS is more fun and a repeat (especially at cheap prices) for me.

The new television is up and running.

47" screen, wide and hi-def... I think.  Der B keeps up with that stuff, I don't.

Since Good Eats isn't either wide-screen or hi-def, it's not something I'm picky about.

(Tonight: reruns of "Send In the Clams" and "Crustacean Nation.")

Don't know Miss Ryan - might if I knew which episodes of TZ she was in.

I mentioned one yesterday--"Shadow Play" with Howard Duff, where he's the businessman who is suddenly an actor playing a businessman on a movie set.  She plays the shrewish wife.

Each evening, from December to December,
Before you drift to sleep upon your cot,
Think back on all the tales that you remember
Of CALUMET.
Ask ev'ry person if he's heard the story,
And tell it strong and clear if he has not,
That once there was a fleeting wisp of glory
Called CALUMET.
CALUMET! CALUMET!
Now say it out with pride and joy!

CALUMET! CALUMET!

Yes, CALUMET, my boy!
Where once it never rained till after sundown,
By eight a.m. the morning fog had flown...
Don't let it be forgot
That once there was a spot
For one brief shining moment that was known
As CALUMET.

We're Knights of the Round Table,
Of thinking we're capable,
If we get bored with shield and sword
We learn our nine-times table,
It's a cerebral life in Calumet,
We contemplate and plot a lot.

We're Knights of the Round Table,
Although we live a fable,
We're not just bums with Royal Mums
We're men whose brains are able,
We like to je ne sais quoi a lot,
We're a polyglot lot in Calumet.

'Though our loyalty's unstable,
And we fold like a card table,
We're not just boys in tin alloys,
Or a King wrapped up in sable,
We think a lot in Calumet--
(Solo) Therefore, I s'pose, I am a lot.

We're Knights of the Round Table.
We dance whene'er we're able.
We do routines and chorus scenes
With footwork impeccable.
We dine well here in Calumet.
We eat ham and jam and spam a lot.
We're Knights of the Round Table.
Our shows are formidable,
But many times we're given rhymes
That are quite unsingable.
We're opera mad in Calumet.
We sing from the diaphragm a lot.

DR elmore and others - Today's Middletown Journal has an article about the death of Middletown-native Margo Skinner, a New York actress who died earlier this month.  See also:

www.playbill.com/news/article/92361.html (http://www.playbill.com/news/article/92361.html)

Oh, no!  I knew Margo.  When I moved to New York, she was still married to Dan Von Bargen whom she met while they were at Trinity Rep.  One of her sisters went to school with me, and I adored her mother.  Dan's career really took off, Margo's career was quieter and she worked steadily.

Good Afternoon!  -Almost Evening...

I'm taking a break right now.  A well-deserved break.

I've made some great progress.  99% of my books, sheet music and scores are packed and boxed and labeled.  I was sort of caught by surprise that I have two and a half boxes worth of cookbooks.  I knew had a lot, but... -However, I have a feeling that's no where a certain DRs collection.  ;)

*Oh, at last count, 20 boxes of scores and music!  I had forgotten just how much classical stuff I have - solo piano, chamber music, vocal music(!!!).  And after scanning the titles, just how much of that "stuff" I had actually performed!  -And then the stuff I know I studied just to study...  Wow!  Just boggles this dust-infested mind right now.  ;)

After sorting through my bookshelves, I made a trip over to Black Swan Books around the corner to see which ones of my "questionables" they would like.  They didn't take everything, but I did make $32.00 in the process.  -Which is $32.00 I hadn't planned on making, so...  DINNER!

:)

It was also sort of "comforting" to realize that I had indeed read a lot of the books I was pulling off my shelves.  There are times when I feel I don't read as much as I should, but after packing my library up (again), I realized I have nothing to be ashamed of in regards to my reading habits.

All that is left is to box up some of my "stray CDs", then wrap my CD towers with that moving-strength plastic wrap.  -I love that stuff!  I found out the last time I moved that that was the easiest way to do move them.  I just wrap the shelves - which supports the back of the units and prevents them from falling out the front - then I just put them on the dolly and into the truck and then into the storage unit.  Best of all, it allows me to access the CD without having to move any boxes out of the way.

I am going through the oodles of applications materials for Law School students who are applying to be law clerks for the judges in Supreme Court, Court of Appeals and Tax Court...the close date is Friday, and I expect to get 80 to 100 more application packets!

I have to comb through each packet of materials (resumes, cover letters, transcripts, writing samples, letters of recommendations, ect) to make sure all the required things are there before giving copies to the judges to peruse. I am just getting a little bleary eyed from looking at all of this stuff.

Evening all!

What a storm we had last night!  Lots of lightning and thunder boomers.

Bear (the terror of Seffner) shook the entire time!  I have never seen a dog so afraid of a storm.

Good news!  We seem to have won the bus battle!  Yay!!   We got another “proposal” this morning.   Nothing is changed!   I can’t begin to tell you how much weight that takes off of my mind.

I'm still going to the meeting.

In other exciting news, we had another bomb scare today.  The whole building was evacuated for about an hour and half.  I heard two different stories, one that a bomb threat was called in and the was that there was an unattended unknown box found on one of the floors near the elevators.  It’s not just a job, it’s an adventure.

Thank you for all of the compliments on my new picture.  I’m not 100% sure what ginchier means but I thank you, DR Stuart.

Humm, after reading all about the tomatoes from yesterday, I had to wonder if I would ever ketchup!  Get it?

I’m also very sorry to say I missed the scoop on the poop—How is Dear Cat Bogie doing now, DR Jane?   ;) :D

Happy Belated Birthday Wishes to both DR Jennifer and DR Joey!  I’m so sorry I missed your special days.

One of them goes to a family in Egypt and is named "Ahmal."

The other goes to a family in Spain; they name him "Juan."

Years later, Juan sends a picture of himself to his birth mother.  Upon receiving the picture, she tells her husband that she wishes she also had a picture of Ahmal.

Her husband responds, "They're twins!  If you've seen Juan, you've seen Ahmal."

Her husband responds, "That's OK. My mother has a mustache."

One of my biggest problems is that my IAAAAWWOTD teacher doesn't seem to know what the word "quiz" means. Her idea of a quiz is a ten-part essay exam that you can't possibly finish in the hour and fifteen minutes that we have to take the thing. That wasn't very nice of her, was it? And she was supposed to give us the essay topic for the term paper today so that we would have two weeks to write it. All ten to twelve pages of it. But then today, she told us that she wasn't going to let us have it until Monday. What is that about? I don't much care for this teacher.

End of rant. But I have plenty more if you want to hear them.

Spanky seems to have mellowed Woolsey a bit in particular. And the female lead is just stunning, kind of like a blonde Ashley Judd. Lots of funny gags, Spanky's weird obsession with breaking glass, one good musical number, good support from Noah Beery.

As for my "move"...

Right now, everything is going into storage here in Richmond.

I'll be here next week playing Mamma Mia!, and staying at Steve's.  During the day next week, I hope to go through my various "shoeboxes" of stuff so that I can whittle down all that stuff.  -My paper shredder will be getting quite the workout I do believe.

Then it's up to Fairfax where I will be staying with my parents like I usually do when I have a gig up in DC.  I start Mamma Mia! up there on the 17th, and that should take me through July 2.  Then it's up to NYC.

I'm hoping to make good use of my daytime hours while I'm up in DC.  I plan to bring a box or two of "stuff" up from Richmond each week.  Sort.  Purge.  Give away.  I'm even toying with taking on a couple of hours at my old music store.  Any extra funds for my upcoming move can only help.

I have a few more leads on another place in NYC, and in the same neighborhood I was looking at before.  I also found out that the "old" place may actually be repaired and ready by July, so...

We shall see...

I'm also happy to announce that I was able to update my roomie's computer without a hitch.  Yes, there's still some pesky adware pop-up, but it seems that part of the program - the one that causes all the issues - has been eradicated.

HOO and RAY!

-But, then again, it's not my computer anyway, so...

Can you believe that Dear Reader Rodzinski is the first person to ask me that all semester? Give the man a Cherry Coke!

I wondered for awhile and figured everyone knew but me. It  was those four "A"s in a row, I just could not conceive what that could stand for!

My favourite years:  probably 1970, a great year for performing and where The Lovely Wife and I became hot and heavy.  1982...when I went to London to film my Sherlock Holmes; 1987...when TLW and I got married married and my play, THE EBONY APE had its world premiere.

No news, unfortunately. Had a couple additional opportunities last week, but nothing I'm too excited about. Never heard from one where I felt the interview went quite well. I'm still employed of course, but it is taking all my strength not to just walk away, so shady has the new operation become. Thanks for asking though!

I just watched last Sunday's episode of DEADWOOD, which is my favorite tv series these days.  The proposal scene between Mr Elsworth and Mrs Garrett was so wonderful!  I think Molly Parker is superb.

I agree with you totally, DR Elmore. That was a beautiful and touching scene, handled expertly by both actors.

And the marvelous actor playing Mr. W (and who was Jack McCall during the first season) is superbly acting one of the most enigmatic personas on the show. I can't begin to imagine what thoughts and feelings revolve around in that fevered brain of his.

I was devastated by the IDOL results show tonight. Of the six remaining singers, I felt he was the only one versatile enough to sing different genres and do it with a great degree of showmanship. At this point, I still like a couple of the remaining singers (Bo and Anthony), but my heart was a little broken by tonight's ouotcome.

This is why I have stopped watching all reality shows except IDOL. I get deep=seated rooting interests for these "real people" and am always so letdown when my favorites don't make it.

Unless you were in Philly, where reactionary Mayor Frank Rizzo wanted to call for the National Guard to patrol the streets to prevent race riots.  As a results, hardly anyone showed up for the city's Fourth of July celebration.

I, too, was stunned by the results of American Idol.  It is hard to understand a contest that keeps Scott in the Top Three and let's Constantine end up going home.  I agree, Matt, that Constantine really did seem able to move from one genre to another without missing a beat.  Both Carrie and Bo stumble every time they are forced to move from their comfort zones.  Sad........ very sad.

Jrand, did you really think Constantine was scary looking?  I thought the man was pure sex.

Jim Beaver, the guy who plays Ellsworth, I used to know back in Dallas.  We had the same agent and used to sit in her office and talk movies all the time.  Jim is a big film buff and has written at least one book on film...had written it at the time, I believe...The Films of John Garfield.  Hell of a nice guy.  I think the last time I saw him must have been a dozen or more years ago at a gas station.

Well yes I did, TCB.  And I just watched the results shows last week and this week - but I thought Constantine was freaky looking - or maybe phony looking. IMO -  I don't think American Idol has ANYTHING to do with singing - you cannot create a STAR with a contest.  But I am sure someone will tell me I am wrong - with examples.

DR MBARNUM - although residuals may have been re-negotiated since 1965, I think participants were paid on a sliding scale for the first six re-runs only.

Good Evening!

I started wrapping up my packing and sorting around 10:30.  I was just getting too tired and a little overwhelmed.  But I did get a lot done.  All that's left is the kitchen - and I still have most of the boxes my appliances came in! - the chest of drawers (all going into laundry baskets), and the various knick-knacks I have about the apartment.

I shall be bringing the contents of my pantry to one of the local church's food pantrys, and I have two bags of plays and books to give to my alma mater's theatre library.  -Yes, I still have issues with the faculty, but I still like the students.  So... Once I'm up tomorrow, I shall take care of those drop-offs, and then I shall return here and finish packing.

Friday will be the big "physical" day - and I'm a bit scared to see how crazy the U-Haul place will be since it's the end of the month.  Then clean Friday night, and then...

:)
