Title: IGNORING THE WHITE NOISE
Post by: bk on December 15, 2020, 12:27:58 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were so much white noise and should be ignored, and now it is time for you to post until the ignored cows come home.

I was sorry to see that Ann Reinking has died. Pixie, the neighbor below me, was her dresser on Goodtime Charlie, and I knew her slightly.  In 2000, the Williamstown Theatre Festival present two different evenings of Noel Coward's Tonight At 8:30, one evening directed by Michael Grief, featuring Blythe Danner and Steven Collins, and the other directed by Ann, with Bill Irwin.  I was the orchestrator.  Ann was very friendly and easy to work with. Michael Grief was neither.

Thank you, BK, for -- believe it or not -- a reminder that today IS, in fact, the day.

Because due to everyone's schedule this week, we're celebrating my birthday here at the house on Thursday evening, which is mighty fine by me, since I'll be only -- AHEM--cough cough -- years of age for an additional two days. Wasn't that a smart thing to do?

I have not seen the MET Der Rosenkavalier of which BK speaks. That shall have to be rectified. Also, I know the director's name but I have no idea who that conductor is, which might be an embarrassing admission, so that shall also have be rectified.

There's going to be a whirlwind of rectifying going on around here.

Hahahaha.....your comment reminds me of the movie RED GARTERS.....

Joanne Gilbert and her father ride into town and no one is there - they're all down at the hanging.....

She meets a boy of about 8.....and later when describing the event to Rosemary Clooney she says - outraged:  "He offered me a 'chaw of toe-bakky'!"

And Rosemary replies....."The lad is generous to a fault."

Yes, and thank you for the reminder. I don't recall how Troyanos and Te Kanawa are in comparison with the other great Octavians and Marschallins out there, but I'm looking over the whole cast list (Blegen - Pavarotti - Nico Castel, another wonderful character actor/singer) and it will be great to revisit this one.

EDIT:  I'm also curious to check out the Karajan film (for my first time in over 40 years) which now, finally, seems to be readily available. Of course, we didn't have home video back then...

Tuesday morning greetings!  Finally watched the Kritzerland show last night and, sure enough, it cheered me right up!

As we've watched holiday specials on TV, Richard and I have become quite annoyed with all the lip syncing (sp?).  It's so nice to see good singers, really singing on camera.

Aside from researching my own plays, I haven't done a lot of reading this year.

However , I am currently reading THE BIG GOODBYE by Sam Wasson.

On order (expected later this week) is RED MILL by Murray Schwartz.

He was the producer of Merv Griffin's talk show.

A takeout Chinese spread from our favorite jernt that goes back to at least the 1980s. It's been the last remaining original Chinese restaurant here for a number of years (they never converted to buffet or any other newfangled thing). To the best of our knowledge, this family still makes everything to order from scratch. Nothing compares, and when you go there to eat in, except for the prices it's like stepping back in time.

...I have arranged a snow storm for you that should be delivered later today!

What a thoughtful birthday gift!          ;D

Fortunately, DR Jrand70's thoughtful gift was held up (probably used Media Mail) and should be here tomorrow about this time.

Finished with the first round of futzing and finessing, and will do round two later tonight after some viewing.  I added quite a few things that were helpful, as well as losing a few things that weren't.

I stopped in at the new independent bookstore yesterday. It's quite a nice store. You can tell it was planned pre-Covid: they installed a fireplace and placed a sofa and armchairs around it. Hoping we will feel free to sit and linger sometime in the future. Personally, I feel I must minimize my time in stores -- rush it, grab what I need, check out, and be gone. One day...

Thank you for the reminder.  Keith wants to postpone our cleaning appointment until after we are vaccinated.  I called, the dentist answered, and I think forgot to have the front desk woman call me back to change the appointment.

Last night I watched the first half - actually a little more than half - of 8 1/2. I started too late and realized I wouldn't get all the way through it. But much to my surprise, the main culprit was the effort it took to read and keep up with the subtitles. I've been reading subtitles all my life, but I was blindsided by two things here:  deciphering the near-constant white words against bright images, and the fast intensity of them. I wonder if they look the same in new Fellini set. I don't think I've ever had this difficult a time on any other film.

I know it's the luck of the draw, since so many of this movie's scenes are light, and it is what it is. The letters have a bit of an outline, but I have to wonder if a color would work better. Whenever a darker background came along, my eyes rejoiced at the lovely contrast. But the moment was always fleeting.

La dolce vita was wonderful, with its 2.35:1 image and moving the titles into the region just below it. Hopefully once I've gotten the rest of the way through this film, which at this point will have to be tomorrow evening, subsequent viewings will be easier.

It's going down to 16 F here overnight, which I daresay won't feel any better than DR Jennifer's 7 F.

There's some stuff outside I'd wanted to clean up a little more before the snow gets here.

But the HELL with that. Now it's too damned cold.

I shall tend to my other priorities:  picking up a couple of things at the supermarket, mailing off DR Elmore's DVDs, and taking the snow blower out for a five-minute warmup so it'll be ready to use on Thursday.

Must go put gas in the motor car now.

Our Costco gas price had gone up from $1.82 where it had been for a while, to $1.89 for several days, and it hit $1.95 just in time for me to fill up yesterday. Today it's $1.97. Say what?

DR Jeanne:  What new independent bookstore is this?

It's in the Westchester community, near LAX. It opened last August and replaced a very rugged dollar store. It's right down the street from my dentist's office -- otherwise I wouldn't have known about it. It's an interesting street, just one-story small businesses reminiscent of the 1950s and 60s. Westchester's main drag is just a block away, with the usual medium to large stores -- Staples, Panera, plus a few independent throwbacks. It's such a contrast!

I'd like to meet the owners. They clearly are experienced booksellers, based on the attractively designed displays and so much about the store. It also has a Liberal bent, with the Obama's books front and center.

I started to post this, then deleted because I thought I was wrong, but it's right where I imagined, in the area near the Trader Joe's I remember stopping at a few times, and near that wonderful facade of the defunct Loyola Theater

Haven't had a chance to watch yet, but could be interesting:

"Oscar & Walt" by Donald Steven Olson celebrates the enduring literary legacies of Oscar Wilde and Walt Whitman by re-creating an actual encounter that took place in 1882 between the 62-year-old Whitman and a 28-year-old Oscar Wilde. .

(approx 90 minutes)
