Well, you've read the notes, you are feeling profoundly profound because of the profoundly profound nature of the notes, and now it is time for you to post until the profoundly profound cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: SCUTTLEBUTT!
-
May I be the first to wish our very own WFO's ever-lovin' Joe the happiest of happy birthdays from all of us here at haineshisway.com.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, JOE!!!
-
As usual these days, it's the ATTACK OF THE WUSSBURGERS.
No more late-night denizens, I guess.
-
Welcome four GUESTS! We're talkin' about quotable lines from favorite plays.
Well, actually, there's nobody here but us chickens and you GUESTS.
I suppose I shall toddle off to the bedroom environment.
-
Happy birthday Joe.
-
I'm not really one for remembering lines from plays or movies. I don't really get much beyond "I'm melting" and "Fasten your seatbelts"
The Shakespeare quotes from Merchant and Richard III still are in my head somewhere and poetry from grade school (I think that's the USA term) is still lurking not too far from the surface.
Useful titles and lines from songs such as "Don't put your daughter on the stage Mrs Worthington" are more likely to escape from the dark recesses along with the oft appropriate "Sing Out Louise".
Most commonly used at the moment is "I am the only Gay in the village". That may be only used by local folk.
(A reference for DR George)

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, JOE!!
-
Oh my where to start? Where to start?
I will get the ball rolling, I will start the Scuttlebutt.
"Our new one piece lace foundation garment. Zips up the back, and no bones." It always makes me laugh!
"When in the future you speak of this - and you will, be kind."
"And when you hear that whistle, your heart's gonna break. 'Cos you know you love me, too."
And Cherie's answer to Beau who insists on calling her Cherry:
"It ain't....well...it ain't dignified!"
-
The Cd sounds marvy!
-
I will be asking for some JOB vibes in a few days.
Good news about Bogie, DRJANE.
I am watching DIAMOND HEAD. Yvette Mimieux was certainly lovely, but her acting seems mostly petulance.
-
Good news about the inclusion of "They Don't Give Medals" BK. Always loved the Dionne version and it's flipside "The Green Grass Starts to Grow". I'm looking forward to the CD.
-
Good morning, all! I'm about to risk my life in the wilds of Rockefeller Center for a haircut, then the recording office. I'm still working my way through thewilds of the Act One Finale sequence of BABES IN TOYLAND: too few informative scripts and too few annotations on the original conductor's scores from 1903.
Favorite lines from plays:
"Wounded myself in the early part of my life by the envenomed tongue of slander, I confess I have since known no pleasure equal to the reducing others to the level of my own reputation." (THE SCHOOL FOR SCANDAL)
"Can you say 'Titus the tailor told ten tall tales to Titania the titmouse?" (A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO THE FORUM)
""Until I was fifteen I was more familar with African than my own body." (ENTERTAINING MR SLOANE)

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, JOE!!!

STELLA!!!!!!!!
-
I've always depended on the kidness of strangers.
-
"Deathtrap...a thriller in two acts"
-
Cynthia: We probally should have gotten together.
Bernard: That's what I keep telling you!!!!
-
"Let's play hump the hostess"
-
"....as my father said to me when he died in my arms, "I don't unstand any of it. I never did"
-
"Our new one piece lace foundation garment. Zips up the back, and no bones." It always makes me laugh.
This line was always a favorite. When a friend would have a party, he used to go around the room with a try of drinks or canapes and say that. One of the best part was to to see the look on people's faces who had NO idea what he was talking about.
Outside of the classics like Hamlet's "Soliloquy," it's odd little lines like the ones Jack mentioned or the things like,
"I love you too, and isn't it a shame that's not enough to keep two people together."
and
"I may be a fool, but I'm not a damn fool."
-
Bruce,
What an interesting collection you picked for Mr. Haines. I'll admit I'm not familiar with all the songs, but I look forward to it
-

It's a bit macabre, but
"I hope you die! I hope you die soon! I'll be waiting for you to die!"

I am looking forward to the new CD simply for the song LOVE LOOK AWAY!
-
Happy Birthday Joe!! :D
-
I probably missed the projected release date but when will this marvy new disc be in our anticipating hands?
-
Good Morning!
I'm up! I'm up! And soon I shall Be Away running my few errands and drop-offs.
I had set my alarm for 7:30... Yeah, right. I got out of bed a little after 9:00 after some very sound sleep. I've just finished my cereal, and now...
-
I looked around my room this morning, and I really don't have that much remaining to pack up. The only major "inconveniences" will be taking apart my shelves - which should be easy - and my bed - which will not be so easy.
I just need to keep reminding myself today that I actually have until Sunday to get all of my stuff out of here. So, if I happen to hit a snag or just need to sit down for a while to take a breather, I shan't get upset or anxious. Just go with the flow... *Oh, and it looks like Steve will be taking tomorrow off - he has to work Sunday, so he's taking his "extra" day - so I may have some help with getting the final part of my move into storage. :) -If not, I'm pretty sure I can get it all done by myself. Heck, I moved it all in here on my own, I can move it out all on my own.
-
BK - Great News about the CD!
;D
-
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, DR's WFO EVER-LOVIN' JOE!
-
As for lines from plays...
Hmmm.... I shall have to think about that one whilst I pack today... I know I have a couple, they're just not coming to me right now.

There was a nice feature on the Sherman Brothers this morning on NPR's Morning Edition this morning. I'm sure you can listen to it on npr.org should you wish.

Pretend girlfriend Amy has gone Hollywood on me and rarely lets me in on her comings and goings nowadays. I haven't seen her since about two months ago, when she pounded on my door at 3:00 am demanding I return "her" artificial leg. Ha! Sorry, toots--that baby is mine!

That was an impressive frenzy DR JoseP.
And what is your head doing in that picture?
I'll bet he's--wait for it--playing by ear!
Ha! Ha! Ha! Oh, I crack myself up!

DR JRand, concerning your comments about AMERICAN IDOL last night, celebrities have numerous ways to be introduced to the public, and in my eyes, IDOL allows the American viewing public a three or four month window to get to know some talented young singers and decide if what they have to offer is something of value. In the cases of Kelly Clarkson and Clay Aiken, the multi-platinum albums each has sold and the concert venues they have packed seem to suggest that at least a portion of the public liked what they saw.
If she hadn't won the Miss Burbank contest, Debbie Reynolds might not have been seen by that Warner Bros. talent scout and signed to a contract (later bought out by MGM).
If she hadn't won Ted Mack's Amateur Hour, would Patsy Cline have become known to millions of people? Maybe, maybe not.
In today's world, it doesn't always require talent to become a celebrity. Many famous people didn't win contests to become famous. But AMERICAN IDOL is merely one portal through which some may walk into the limelight.

[move=left,scroll,6,transparent,100%]HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO WFO'S EVERLOVIN' JOE!!!![/move]
-
What a dump!!
-
The biggest shocker of the IDOL voting was that Scott Soval was one of the top three vote getters even after a mediocre rendition of "Dancing with My Father." (But then, Carrie Underwood, who gave an equally hideous performance on Tuesday) was also among the top three.
It's very clear that at this stage of the game, sides have been taken, and the weekly performance seems to have very little to do with who stays and who goes.
And at least this week, Simon Cowell's admonition to Scott to "Pak your bags; you're going home" didn't seem to have any sway with the voters who propelled him into the Top Three vote getters.
-
Mr. Vixmom will oft quote this when I appear to be about to blowup
"By this day! She's a fair lady: I do spy some marks of love in her.
Yes...it works!!
-
Vixmom, I love that cake! LOL!
-
Speaking of blowing up, has anyone heard this story?
Exploding toads puzzle German scientists
More than 1,000 toads have puffed up and exploded in a Hamburg pond in recent weeks, and scientists still have no explanation for what's causing the combustion, an official said Wednesday.
Both the pond's water and body parts of the toads have been tested, but scientists have been unable to find a bacteria or virus that would cause the toads to swell up and pop, said Janne Kloepper, of the Hamburg-based Institute for Hygiene and the Environment.
"It's absolutely strange," she said. "We have a really unique story here in Hamburg. This phenomenon really doesn't seem to have appeared anywhere before."
The toads at a pond in the upscale neighborhood of Altona have been blowing up since the beginning of the month, filling up like balloons until their stomachs suddenly burst.
"It looks like a scene from a science-fiction movie," Werner Schmolnik, the head of a local environment group, told the Hamburger Abendblatt daily. "The bloated animals suffer for several minutes before they finally die."
Biologists have come up with several theories, but Kloepper said that most have been ruled out.
The pond's water quality is no better or worse than other bodies of water in Hamburg, the toads did not appear to have a disease, and a laboratory in Berlin has ruled out the possibility that it is a fungus that made its way from South America, she said.
She said that tests will continue. In the meantime, city residents have been warned to stay away from the pond.

As I am no longer allowed to listen to internet radio at work I have been grabbing multitudes of CDs for to listen to at work on my newfangled computer.
Right now SERGIO FRANCHI is singing CIAO CIAO BAMBINA.

Ta-dah!!

That was the winter of senior year. Then in the spring something happened to me.Yes,I remember.I fell in love with James Tyrone and was so happy for a time.
-
One more IDOL comment, I agree with DR TCB about COnstantine's looks. I found him adorable with an instant connection to his audience when he performed. No, I'm not a fan of long hair, but otherwise, I found him imminently appealing.
-
Sergio is now singin VOLARE. I love that song.
I love it, too. I like the Maguire Sisters' version.
-
It's very clear that at this stage of the game, sides have been taken, and the weekly performance seems to have very little to do with who stays and who goes.
The one thing about that statement that doesn't add up is that Constantine has never been in the bottom 3 -- and it clearly seems Tuesday night's blah song selection from him gave his fans pause...
Why Savol continues to be propped up eludes me. Carrie, too. I cannot imagine a C/W "Idol" winner. Like...what's she gonna do? Convert the masses???? She's quite uncomfortable in other genres...but Simon continues to adore her, so that's all that matters, I guess.
Two of Tuesday night's best three performances were in the bottom three...Anthony and Vonzell...should have been "Top 2" if talent and song choice/delivery were a factor.
Meanwhile, there are a lot of sad, lonely people out there who see Scott as "their" idol...and they're bulk-voting.
I think the show just might die if Scott wins.

Rise and Shine! Rise and Shine!
I'll rise but I won't shine!

DR Ginny: Thanks for the reply to my inhaler question. I had a nasty virus back in December and had to see a doctor when all over-the-counter treatments failed me.
He detected a wheeze in one of my lungs and asked if that hadn't been mentioned before (it hadn't). He asked me about allergies...and that was that. My allergies have progressively worsened over the past 10 years...from once a year in the spring to year-round. It's always something.
The inhaler REALLY helps at some rough moments, after which I'm fine for quite a while. But some co-workers have asked me about side effects, of which I've had none. And then they allude to "possible" side effects in the future...and I think, "No. My doctor wouldn't prescribe something that might hurt me later on."
But then....
Have you had any concerns like that?
-
In re bk's evaluation of JOHNNY GUITAR on his region 2 DVD, a few weeks ago, it was being featured on Encore Western, a pay cable channel I subscribe to. I captured it to the hard drive and burned a gloriously beautiful copy of it to DVD. I really was impressed with its sharpness and the Trucolor looked just fine to my eyes. Don't know what print Encore used, but it seemed flawless to my eyes.
bk, I'm assuming this was filmed in Academy ratio as the Encore version was full frame. I'm guessing Republic Studios didn't immediately switch to 1.75:1 or 1.85:1 after Cinemascope took off and made folks want wider screened films.
-
It's a perfectly hideous day, weather-wise...rain, rain, rain. It was glorious overnight, beating insistently against my bathroom skylight and blowing against my windowpanes. I slept the sleep of babes.
It's supposed to clear up and become sunny this P.M.
We shall see.
Meanwhile, I'm typing on a borrowed computer as my computer has stopped responding to my keyboard. I had a new one standing by and it won't respond to it, either. So...I've called the techs...let them sort it out!
-
Not a line but a Stage Direction:
The sound of a door shutting is heard from below.
-
"We had spaghetti three times at our house last week."
-
Johnny Guitar has always been full frame as far as I know. Sounds like the Encore channel's source material is sharper than the DVD.
-
It rained most of the night, but seems to be done right now.
That's not a line from a play.
-
"In Spain? No I'm not in Spain, I'm in agony that's where I am"

We've done movies - today is plays. But it's a great line.

Just got my laptop back a few minutes ago via UPS. I was tracking its repair via an online portal and UPS told me exactly where it was at all times so I could anticipate it's return. My roomate Phil, is very very happy since he doesn't have to worry about me jumping on his computer every five seconds to figure out where mine was at. :D More later after I have gotten all caught up. I have a three hour Elijah rehearsal tonight with orchestra and again tomorrow, then we are performing it on Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon.
-
Sergio is now singing TENDERLY, another of my favorite songs!
-
Good Afternoon!
I'm back from my various errands and drop-offs. Drop-offs, heh - sounds a bit nefarious to me. ;)
NOT!
There was a potential face-to-face "confrontation" that I was sort of looking forward to that ended up not happening since everyone is in meetings today. However, there was one face-to-face I was looking forward to which also did not happen due to meetings... I shall try again tomorrow.
I also went by the U-Haul place to get my storage space and van rental in order. I went ahead and "splurged" on a 10x10 space. I could fit all my stuff into a 10X8 or even a 10x10, but I wanted to make it easy for me to access stuff over the next month or two.
I was not able to get a van until Sunday. Which, in retrospect, is better. I can take it a little easier over the next two days in regards to packing, and since I just found out that the new roomie is not moving in until next weekend I'm not really that "rushed". It's also supposed to rain tomorrow and Saturday, so the move had the potential to be not that pleasant. In the meantime, I think I shall go ahead and take a few carloads over today. And, who knows? Maybe I'll be able to cancel my van reservation. *I only really need it for the bed anyway, so.. If anything, I'll only need to make one trip with the van on Sunday - save on gas and mileage!
In the meantime, I think I'm gonna get some lunch and watch me some "Y&R".
;)
-
DR Joey - I hope the fact that you got your laptop back means that I'll be getting mine back too tomorrow or Saturday. <fingers and toes crossed>
-
DR Dan (the Man) - I'm sorry to hear that you and Ms. Sedaris are having "issues" right now. Just be thankful the papparazzi and the tabloids are respecting your wishes to be left alone during this most difficult time for both of you.
-However, I am looking forward to the Barbara Walter interview in a few weeks.

I can't wait for the new Guy Haines cd - what an interesting track list!
Incidentally, has anyone else here seen the musical version of Johnny Guitar? I didn't love it in the theatre (see my review at http://www.talkinbroadway.com/regional/boston/boston90.html (http://www.talkinbroadway.com/regional/boston/boston90.html)), but the cast album has a lot of charm.

But if you stir backwards, the jam will not come together again. Indeed, the pudding does not notice and continues to turn pink just as before. Do you think this is odd?
SEPTIMUS: No.
THOMASINA: Well, I do. You cannot stir things apart.

"I hope you die! I hope you die soon! I'll be waiting for you to die!"
Thank you for this, DR DtM. I haven't thought of this line in eons. Used to use it all the time with a good friend of mine. I LOVE this line!
-
"We had spaghetti three times at our house last week."
Another favorite.
Whenever I am telling Dear Partner John a story that he deems boring (surprisingly enough, I do this more often than you might think! :) ), he'll get this glazed look in his eye, wait until I am finished, and utter this line. Makes me crack up every time.
-
Sergio is now singing TENDERLY, another of my favorite songs!
This (at least the Rosemary Clooney version) was my parents' "song."
Once, I happened to get into the elevator at Rainbow & Stars (a late, lamented NYC boite, with a hideous room arrangement), when who should step into the elevator but Miss Clooney herself. (This was before she died, obviously.) I turned to her and told her how much I admired her vocal stylings, and added that "Tenderly" was indeed my parents' song. She smiled, and said something like "Well, they must be very happy." I retorted that they were divorced, but that I didn't think her recording had anything to do with it. She roared!

From Mr. Brockman and Mr. Orr

Mr. Orr, that's too easy. Of course its' from Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf ;)
Although it's really from a 1949 vehicle called Beyond the Forest

DR WFO - Please convey birthday wishes to Joe!
-
Beyond the Forest (1949), directed by King Vidor, screenplay by Lenore J. Coffee, from the novel by Stuart Engstrand, starring Bette Davis, Joseph Cotton, and The Actor with the Scar, but not Little Miss Alice Faye. No, it's not a play. It's some goddamn Warner Brothers epic.
What I wish some enterprising producer had done, back when it was possible, is to stage HAoVW with Joseph Cotton and Bette Davis as George and Martha. That's my dream casting.
Good to see you, Arnold M. Brockman.
Good to see you, too, DLevy.
-
Thanks from Joe by proxy for all the birthday wishes. I will print them out when I get home to give him along with his birthday gift: "Liars", by Todd Rundgren. I don't think he has any Todd records made more recently than 20 years ago, so I thank whoever it was at this here web site who put me onto this recent CD.
-
In re Angel Jim:
A week or so ago DR DearReaderLaura asked if Jim would be open to receiving a letter of support. I finally had the opportunity to ask him, and it would make him very happy if any of you were to take pen in hand (no e-mail in Attica) to wish him well. Just click on my name and send me an IM, and I will give you his address. I think he might especially enjoy getting letters from outide the U S of A.
-
Good Afternoon!
I also went by the U-Haul place to get my storage space and van rental in order. I went ahead and "splurged" on a 10x10 space. I could fit all my stuff into a 10X8 or even a 10x10, but I wanted to make it easy for me to access stuff over the next month or two.
Huh?????
-
DR Stuart, that Rosemary Clooney story is wonderful! I laughed quite loudly...scared a few co-workers, I think.
-
DR Jose, I still have not figured out where you are moving to or why...perhaps you answered my inquiry yesterday and I missed it.
-
Ebb Tide is my other favorite song...I would like to have a whole CD of different versions of Ebb Tide. That would make me very happy.
-
Sergio Franchi just sang Ebb Tide on this CD I am listening too...that is what prompted that statement which seemed to come out of nowhere.
-
I'm back from the doctor and the shot. I must say, the lady doing the shot today was not quite as gentle with the needle as the last lady. Or maybe my left butt cheek is more tender than my right buttcheek.
I'm hoping that this shot will, over the next few days, put everything completely back to normal. If not, I can always request another on Monday morning.
-
Happy Birthday to JOE!
I was also extremely disappointed with last night's IDOL. I had a feeling Scott might be top 3 when I saw him and Constantine have to choose sides. I really think it was Simon's "pack your bags" comment that got him the votes.
Constantine was one of my favorites. And I really cannot understand how he could have gotten the fewest votes. But it seems the voters are fickle (since one week Bo was next to last and last night he was top 3).
My sis called right when the show ended, totally disgusted and said she doesn't think she will watch anymore. I'll bet there were a lot of people very unhappy with these results. I really thought Constantine would be top 3.
-
One more Idol comment. I really don't think there is any way that Scott will win. He has been bottom 3 the past few weeks. And I really only think that it was Simon's comment that made people vote for him.
I do however think that Carrie will probably win.

I went in search for a "Hilary Duff" birthday gift for my sister's niece. And I had a lot of luck. Zellers (a Walmart type store), had a discount rack where everything was 50% off the last price. And there was tons of Hilary Duff clothes. Every one says "stuff" on it. I guess it rhymes with Duff. :) They are cute. And I think the birthday girl will be very happy!

Patti Lupone and Michael Cerveris will star on Broadway In SWEENEY TODD.
I actually really like both of these performers. But one thing about the PASSION concert is that she seemed so much older than him. And I think think we will find the same thing here (although granted she will get to wear some make-up and look decent this time).

DRs Laura and Jane asked about the birthday cake and I forgot to answer.
The restaurant provided one for free (so I'm not sure exactly what it was called). But it was really delicious. I love desserts but not so much the actual cake part. But this was was all chocolate. But it had this creamy icing in layers between bits of cake. It was super rich and super good. And it was square (which i thought was weird)!

JR would be the first to tell you (well, maybe the second ;)) that there are two (count 'em) songs called Ebb Tide. The first one, which pre-dates that one that you're probably fond of by a couple of decades, was the title song to Frances Farmer's only Technicolor epic (and only Paramount's second Technicolor feature). It had a hit recording in 1937 by Bunny Berigan, who charted that very same year with another song from a Farmer feature, The First Time I Saw You, from Toast of New York. As I mentioned here eons ago, you noir fans will recognize First Time I Saw You, as it was recycled as the ubiquitous underscore theme in Out of the Past.

In your search for that Twilight Zone episode, this may help:
"A World of Difference" Episode: #1.23 - 11 March 1960
Susan Dorn .... Marion Curtis
Howard Duff .... Arthur Curtis/Gerry Reagan
Gail Kobe .... Sally
Frank Maxwell .... Marty
Eileen Ryan .... Nora Reagan
David White .... Brinkley
-
Oops, did I give a wrong title? Sorry. We've been watching them back to back and the titles become a blur. But it is season one and does co-star Howard Duff. I'd love for others to chime in--don't you think Eileen Ryan could be Meryl Streep's (unknown) mother? It's funny to think of Streep and the Penn brothers as half-siblings. :)

Happy Birthday to WFO's Joe!! ;D ;D
At work, we had a staff meeting and this is the first chance that I've had to post. Now it's lunch time and I have errands to run. :D
-
Happy Birthday to JOE!!
For "Joe" songs, see posts from 2 days ago, Joey's Birthday.

Oh doctors would never do that-right! :o
If you are inhaling steroids there could be long term problems. If you stop taking steroids you need to go off them slowly. I don’t remember why. On and off I used the inhaler before walking so I could breathe more easily. Eventually I had to stop because it made me shake.
-
I must be having trouble with my eyes. I thought WFO was saying that Hilary Duff was in an episode of the TWILIGHT ZONE.
-
Jose is your new avatar an expression of how you feel right now?
Hi ArnoldMBrockman. Do you identify with “I will rise but I won’t shine”? ;D
Stuart-LOL on the Rosemary Clooney story.
Jennifer your birthday cake sounds delicious-wish you had taken a picture.
Hi dlevy, welcome back.
-
Bruce-ouch. Good last shot vibes!
-
Another great MAMMA MIA! photo.
Good news from DRJOEY - and good vibes for DRJOSE that his computer comes back home soon!
Hello, dlevy!
-
I am loving all of these DRAMATIC and FUNNY lines from plays! DRSTUART what a great Rosemary story.
A few more DRKERRY may recognize:
"I just adore finding new places to wear diamonds!"
"It was the punch bowl, honey, the cut glass punch bowl!"
"You will take a subscription? Well, bless you, Ida, bless you. I mean thank you."
-
A couple from THE REAL THING by Tom Stoppard:
"I don't think writers are sacred, but words are. They deserve respect. If you get the right ones in the right order, you can nudge the world a little or make a poem which children will speak for you when you're dead."
and...
"It's no trick loving somebody at their best. Love is loving them at their worst."
and on similar lines from Oscar Wilde's AN IDEAL HUSBAND...
"It is not the perfect, but the imperfect, who have need of love."
-
And my FAVORITE OF ALL (in part):
"..... This story shall the good man teach his son;
and Crispin Crispian shall ne'r go by,
From this day to the ending of the world,
But we in it shall be remembered-
We few, we happy few, we band of brothers;
For he today that sheds his blood with me
Shall be my brother; be he ne'er so vile,
This day shall gentle his condition;
And gentlemen in England now-a-bed
Shall think themselves accurs'd they were not here,
And hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks
That fought with us upon Saint Crispin's Day."
"For England, Harry, and St George!"
-
"Nobody comes... nobody goes... it's awful."
-
I think this is also from THE REAL THING:
Wife: You made love to me while I was asleep?
Husband: I thought I would try without your talking for once.
-
"There is life in this body."
-
I must be having trouble with my eyes. I thought WFO was saying that Hilary Duff was in an episode of the TWILIGHT ZONE.
I think she and a lot of her contemporaries live there, DR RODZINSKI.
-
And nobody has yet mentioned:
"I may vomit."
-
"With My Eyes Wide Open I'm Dreaming!"
-
"Of course he has a knife, he always has a knife, we all have knives! It's 1183 and we're barbarians! How clear we make it." Goldman, The Lion in Winter.
-
I love that "I hope you die" line, also. In fact, I need to take THE LITTLE FOXES out and watch it again. Even with changes from the stage version, it's still a fantastic movie.
-
From Virginia Woolf, I always liked George's toast:
"For the mind's blind eye, the heart's ease, and the liver's craw. Down the hatch, all."
The French version translates this as:
"A vôtre santé."
hmmm
-
DR JENNIFER nice birthday buys! Don't you love it when it all comes together like that? And 50% off!
I guess DR MATTH - that I know several personalities got their initial starts via a contest (Debbie and Patsy are good examples) - but the actual contest itself did not propel them to the height of stardom that the AMERICAN IDOL program claims it will do for the winner.
I think it is a great springboard - but it is also a sort of Instant Oblivion for those who have nowhere to go, or not enough talent or guidance to build on the "popularity" it gives them briefly. This is just my opinion, of course - as is EVERYTHING I post here.
As for Constantine - well that's what makes horse racing. I am sure there are PLENTY of performers that I like that would (at the very least) bore you. I am also sure that there are many that we have in common.
-
"You're all flops. I am the Earth Mother, and you're all flops!"
-
"I'm not a Brooster, I'm a bastard!"
-
"Of course he has a knife, he always has a knife, we all have knives! It's 1183 and we're barbarians! How clear we make it." Goldman, The Lion in Winter.
"How about eternal peace? Now there's a thought."
-
EYES was so very entertaining last night. It kills me to know the ratings are crappy, and the show has a slim to none chance of being renewed for next season. But it's one of the smartest and most entertaining caper shows in a long time, since MOONLIGHTING, I'd say.
-
"I went to the zoo today."
-
Quite a few of the IDOLS who didn't win, including Clay Aiken, Tamyra Gray, Matt Metzger, and Frenchie Davis to name four that come instantly to mind, have parlayed their exposure on the show to nice careers on stage and TV.
But NO ONE can predict the public's acceptance or rejection of a new personality. MGM learned that with Lucille Bremer: great introduction in MEET ME IN ST. LOUIS, a starring role opposite Fred Astaire in YOLANDA AND THE THIEF, and within two years, her screen career was over.
The last two IDOLs have not had supersonic record sales, so you can't predict whether winning that title will launch them into the heights of stardom or merely show them to be flashes in the pan. All the show can do is provide an introduction. The rest is up to fate really.
-
DR ELMORE - thanks for the video that arrived today. I will be watching it shortly?
Would you like for me to send you a nice selection of video rarities?
-
DR MATTH -- poor Lucille, what a great example. Didn't she also have a Life Magazine cover?
-
"I can't stand a naked light bulb, any more than I can a rude remark or a vulgar action."
-
CP great lines from AN IDEAL HUSBAND.
And from THE IMPORTANCES OF BEING EARNEST:
“When one is in town one amuses oneself. When one is in the country one amuses other people.”
"To lose one parent, Mr. Worthing, may be regarded as a misfortune; to lose both looks like carelessness."
-
Speaking of which.....Thea Gill (the blonde lesbian from QAF) played Lucille Bremer in ME AND MY SHADOWS the tv movies featuring Judy Davis as Judy Garland.
The scene she did involved the problems Garland, Minelli, and Bremer had in filming the "mirror" scene in MEET ME IN ST LOUIS.....and it was just the same on the TV movie. Davis kept insisting that Gill was getting in her way and in her face and that the director was favoring Gill in the scene. And if it doesn't sound familiar, it's because the entire sequence was CUT from the final film.
-
Matt H, sorry the ratings for EYES are low. We just watched the previous episode that aired while we were in Portland. Guess tonight we will watch the new one.
-
DR JENNIFER nice birthday buys! Don't you love it when it all comes together like that? And 50% off!
And I didn't even mention the best part. One of the shirts was supposed to come with shorts. But they were nowhere to be found. So she sold me the shirt for $2.50! (and the others ended up to be only $5 each).
DR Jane, actually I didn't get any pics from tues. Nobody brought their camera! But this is a really nice restaurant (it was packed even on a Tuesday). So there cake was very gourmet. And when they cut the pieces they drizzles chocolate sauce on each person's plate.
-
Boy that cakes sounds good. Is there a website for the restaurant?
-
The only thing that would be worse than Scott winning "American Idol" is if Carrie wins "American Idol."
She's so over.
-
Jane-
Yes I do identify with that quote from THE GLASS MENAGERIE... and I love your Wilde quote about parents.
-
DR ELMORE - thanks for the video that arrived today. I will be watching it shortly?
Would you like for me to send you a nice selection of video rarities?
DRJRand54, I'm glad it arrived! You owe me nothing. It was my pleasure.
More favorite lines:
"What a discovery! Married to a mistress of the fraudulent climax. (WHAT THE BUTLER SAW)
"Oh, what a terrible thing to happen to a man who's been kissed by the Pope." (LOOT)
"I am known for the gentleness of my disposition and the extraordinary sweetness of my nature, but I warn you, Miss Cardew, you may go too far." (THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST)
-
DR MATTH -- poor Lucille, what a great example. Didn't she also have a Life Magazine cover?
Did she? I never knew that! Well, she was spectacular looking in YOLANDA and was a great dancer. I think her numbers in ZIEGFELD FOLLIES with Astaire are superb, the highlights of the movie (along with Judy's Madame Crematon and Lena's "Love").
-
The only thing that would be worse than Scott winning "American Idol" is if Carrie wins "American Idol."
She's so over.
And I guess you read the news on the internet about Bo today. Turns out he had a cocaine possession charge in 2001. [sigh]

Very funny cartoon, DR RLP.

Here she is DRMATTH - March 25, 1946. ;D

DRJRand54, I'm glad it arrived! You owe me nothing. It was my pleasure.
Well, be that as it may. You may just find a surprise in your mailbox sooner or later. 8)

Happy Birthday to Joe! We want a cake report tomorrow, preferably with pictures!
DR RonPulliam: Albuterol has been around for a long time. The only side effect I know is that it can make you shake if you take too much and don't need it. Wheezing causes damage to your lungs, so take the meds you need to keep it under control.
DR Jennifer: Thanks for the cake report!
I hope DR Sandra has time to log in today. She's good at remembering quotes.
-
"Oh, what he did to my bust."
"I never dated him. I married him, but I never dated him!"
-
DR RODZINSKI what are you doing in Montreal?
-
I really do like this high-speed internet thing. I'm still getting used to stepping over the wire through the house, though.
-
DR RODZINSKI what are you doing in Montreal?
Debauchery, DRJRand54, debauchery!
-
LOL DRELMORE....well that goes without saying. I meant in ADDITION to that.
-
Has this "charming" British craze come to anyone's attention?
I don't recall reading about it here, although I might well have missed it.
http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk_news/story/0,3604,1470161,00.html
What I will say is, bring it on! I've been spoiling to knock someone's block off for a long time...and this would be a good reason to do it!
:D
-
DR RLP that is terrible. At first I thought maybe it was the NEW English fad that MR BK's hair-person had mentioned, but this is a NEW atrocity!
-
For those with an interest in such things:
When DR JOSE again joins MAMMA MIA! (and it's rag bag) - he will be in the company of some of the MOST beautiful women I have ever seen in my life. And not only do they look great, they can sing, AND get all their laughs!
Number one on MY list is Miss Lisa Mandel who plays Tanya!
-
Wow! DRJOSE here is a short diary that Lisa wrote when she was on tour in 2001 with COPACABANA! ;D

Sorry George I couldn't resist... :-* ;D
Darn I still owe yo a CD!! Sorry sorry George.. I'll try to do it this weekend... :-* :-*

Chess-nuts boasting in an open foyer.

Just worked with Mr. Kevin Spirtas - fun.
Drinking some EmergenC and then will have luncheon.
Heard back from a new book guinea pig - an important one for many reasons, and he was very pleased with the book, so I'm happy.

DR Jane, I checked and found this website:

I don't see any pictures of the desserts. :(

Good Afternoon!
Well, I went ahead and moved all my storage boxes into my newly-rented storage unit. It took me about three trips. About 34 boxes total. Most of it is music, but there are also a bunch of "shoeboxes" that are long overdue for sorting through (and shredding or filing). Hopefully, I'll make some progress on those next week during the day.
Once I got back here, I vacuumed out the newly-empty closet. I was glad not to find any dead mice in there - and I wouldn't have been surprised if I had after the problem I had last fall. However, I did find another mouse hole in the closet. Now I just need to find the foam-insulation stuff to plug it up. Then I bundled up a bunch of magazines for the recycling bin. -I found that I had stored a box of back issues in my closet; and now I have another free box for more stuff!
I did stop at the Bubble Tea place on the way back where I picked up a very refreshing Lychee Slush with Jelly. I was all set for the "grass jelly" that I usually find at these places - trust me, it tastes better than it sounds/looks - and, no, it's not made of grass. However, they were using a great mix of little cubes of mango, coconut and peach flavored gelatin. Quite yummy, and a perfect complement to my Lychee Slush.
And now, I'm taking a little breather before boxing up my small kitchen electrics. And then... Hmm... We shall see...
-
PAGE SEVEN DANCE!!!!!
Hmm... Let's see... How about a...
TARANTELLA!
-
DR Jane - I'm not feeling sideways... just felt like changing things up. I may go ahead and change it back later tonight. *I also uploaded a couple of other "options" last week, so...
Stay tuned!
-
DR MBarnum - Per yesterday's post: ;)
Haines His Way / Daily Discussions / Re:WHERE ELSE ON ALL THE INTERNET? on: Yesterday at 10:03:15pm
As for my "move"...
Right now, everything is going into storage here in Richmond.
I'll be here next week playing Mamma Mia!, and staying at Steve's. During the day next week, I hope to go through my various "shoeboxes" of stuff so that I can whittle down all that stuff. -My paper shredder will be getting quite the workout I do believe.
Then it's up to Fairfax where I will be staying with my parents like I usually do when I have a gig up in DC. I start Mamma Mia! up there on the 17th, and that should take me through July 2. Then it's up to NYC.
I'm hoping to make good use of my daytime hours while I'm up in DC. I plan to bring a box or two of "stuff" up from Richmond each week. Sort. Purge. Give away. I'm even toying with taking on a couple of hours at my old music store. Any extra funds for my upcoming move can only help.
I have a few more leads on another place in NYC, and in the same neighborhood I was looking at before. I also found out that the "old" place may actually be repaired and ready by July, so...
We shall see...
[/size]
-
Another great MAMMA MIA! photo.
Good news from DRJOEY - and good vibes for DRJOSE that his computer comes back home soon!
Actually, this series of photos was taken during the run of Camelot at Arena Stage last season. I don't think I could get enough "mood lighting" in the Mamma Mia! pit. Well, I'd get lighting, but...
;D
And thanks for the Computer Vibes. -I'm feeling OK with the whole situation. And I might as well use my roomie's computer since he rarely does.
-And it really is amazing just how much stuff one can get done when one is not spending all day with a laptop on his lap.
;)
-
DR Jrand - And Thanks for jogging my memory about Lisa Mandel and Copacabana. I actually played two weeks of that tour. WOW! and UGH! Talk about overblown! It was a BIG show. In fact, at the time, they were travelling with more trailers filled with set pieces and costumes than any other show on the road at that time. Even more than Phantom of the Opera.
However, there was some great talent in that cast. And talk about a Curtain Call!
-All together now..
"Her name was Lola..."
-

I'd suggest handcuffing the perps, but that's considered cruel and demeaning.
-
Not long before RLP returns with
"People who live in grass houses shouldn't stow thrones'
"You Can't have your kayak and heat it too"
and the all time favourite"
"It's a knick knack Paddy Wack give the frog a loan
His old man was a Rolling Stone."
-
LOL.....she was a showgirl!!!
-
"Which way do you want the pleats on this skirt turned?"
"Toward Mecca!"
-
Dear Jose, I do like the new picture, but I really loved the last one... and I am also noticing I'm developing a tendency to put my head sidewise to see your face properly....
jest ma too sents.. not that it was requested ;D
Hmm... I don't have to turn sidewise to see myself. Are you sure it's not you who is turned sidewise?
;)
-
"..With yellow feathers in her hair..."
-
Whew! That frenzy sort of tuckered me out. Well, that and moving 34 boxes-o-stuff into storage.
OH!
And I just have to say at this time...
"Good car. Very good car."
-And I hit 212000 miles today too! Go Ford!
-
DR TCB - Sorry for the confusion... should have read "5x10 or 8x10".
I hope this helps you sleep tonight.
;D
-
OK - I think I'm gonna veg on the couch for a bit and watch the news...
Laters...

DRJOSE did the pit members for COPACABANA get to wear Ricky Ricardo shirts?
Ooh! OOH!
Do you mean those shirts with fantastic ruffled sleeves?
Hmmmm...I'll bet only Jose wore one!
-
Hehehehe.
That's the one!
-
DR TCB - Sorry for the confusion... should have read "5x10 or 8x10".

;D
I hope so too, DR Jose. I have been looking for a cure for my insomnia.

Something to think about DR TCB - when Buffalo Bill Cody was denied a concession at the 1893 Chicago Columbian Exposition World's Fair. He hired a outdoor stadium across the street and attracted his own crowds - Annie Oakley was part of the show!
When there was a controversy about keeping the fair open on Sunday, which Susan B. Anthony favored, a man jumped up and yelled: "Would you rather your son go to see Buffalo Bill Cody on Sunday than go to Church?"
Anthony replied: "Yes! He would probably learn more, too."
Cody went to the newspapers and offered Anthony a free pass to come to his show any time she wanted. She came the next week, sat in a box of honor, and Cody raced across the arena on his horse and kissed her proffered hand - to a standing ovation by the crowd of nearly 17,000 (paid) admissions.
During his stay in Chicago, a young woman from out west came to his hotel and was rather surprised to be taken up to the suite of Mr and Mrs Cody - since she, at the time, WAS Mrs. Cody!
-
I'm not sure of the exact wording of these quotes, but they're pretty close:
"You wouldn't want to send up a smoked virgin." ...Forum
"And then I stepped on the ball! Well, it was ghastly! Just ghastly!" Auntie Mame
-
"It was five o'clock a few hours ago."
-
Is EmergenC anything like Airbourn?
-
"Myrtle Mae, you have a lot to learn, and I hope you never learn it."
-
"From Brazil...where the nuts come from."
-
Trivia:
On this day, April 28th, two hundred and sixteen years ago, the crew of the Bounty mutinied against Capt. William Bligh.
(We here at HHW treat our Williams with much more courtesy, thankfully.)

JRand, a pal of mine is having his bachelor festivities up in Montreal, so I'm driving up there tomorrow morning. It should be quite an insane weekend.

You're driving!?!?!?
Bon chance, mon ami.
;)
And remember, "Je me souviens."
-or is it that supposed to be "Bon chans" - Why am I drawing a blank on that?
-
Actually, Montreal is quite nice this time of year if I remember. Have a wonderful time. Which part of Montreal? I keep hoping to get up there for the Fetes des Neiges in February. Some day...
-
OH!
And after a couple of tries, I finally got my food processor back in it's box. "Oh, so that's the citrus juicer!"

I wasn't quick enough to claim the Page 8 Dance! I just won this magazine from eBay and was going to make it the Page 8 Dance. (I added the green bars since this is a family site ;)):
-
The inspiration, perhaps, for the cover of Jason Graae's first CD?
-
The day that issue came out was one of the giddiest I can remember. I'd been reading Films and Filming for years, so imagine my surprise when I went to the Las Palmas newstand to get the latest issue and my eyes saw that cover. Wow, said I!
I swear, my voice box just doesn't seem to want to operate the way I want it to and the way I would have hoped after this second shot. But, you know what - I think ninety percent of it is in my head, since the only other time in the last five years that this has happened (including visits to the doctor) were for the LAST Guy Haines album. I'm just gonna hope for the best, that's all I can do, really, so keep those excellent vibes and xylophones coming this way through the end of next Tuesday.
-
That doesn't look like the choreography John Smithee was trying to learn them.
-
Der Brucer has the television in the kitchen tuned to one station carrying the President's press conference, and the set in the livingroom tuned to another station carrying the same press conference. Interesting, because the sound is slightly out of synch between the two stations.
The President is on a five-second delay? :o
-
Ah - so you don't leave for the festivities until tomorrow, DRRODZINSKI. So do you have your copy of INVASION as yet?
-
I am making a tape, so the President isn't on my TV! I hope there isn't a war being declared, and I am watching Ed Sullivan.
-
Elmore has INVASION!, so I'll be able to check it out next week with any luck.
Jose- Don't know what part of Montreal. Didn't even know it had parts! I'm just going where they tell me. Within reason!
BK-VIBES for the ol' Voicebox!

I've been trying to watch The Front with Woody Allen, but I just can't get into it tonight. My mind keeps drifting...
-
...along with the tumbling tumbleweeds?"
-
Nope, I had no idea we'd be on the cover or have a huge photo spread inside. Total surprise to me.
-
ArnoldMBrockman-LOL and thank you.
Ron I must show that cartoon to Keith. ;D
I couldn’t retrieve the story off of the Guardian site.
Jennifer thanks for the link. I found it interesting. Is that the same restaurant you normally go to for ribs?
-
DR Jane - I'm not feeling sideways... just felt like changing things up. I may go ahead and change it back later tonight. *I also uploaded a couple of other "options" last week, so...
Stay tuned!
I thought maybe you were exhausted from all the packing or contemplating your big move and the changes it might bring.
-
Lucky me ::), I finally read the article in the Guardian.
JRand I enjoyed the Cody story-but poor Mrs. Cody.
-
Bruce, excellent vibes and xylophones!!
-
LOL DRJANE....from what I have read about Bill Cody - she shouldn't have been surprised!
MR BK - I think you talked about the actors featured on the cover in TFNM documentary....LOL....
-
;D
-
Thanks for posting that LIFE magazine cover, DR JRand. Looks like her outfit from "This Heart of Mine" in ZIEGFELD FOLLIES.
-
When I got in from rehearsal, I had the DVR show JOEY, but, of course, it was someone even more lame-brained than poor Joey - our President. The recording (and WILL & GRACE) was instantly deleted.
I did get to see CSI "live" at 10, so all was not lost.
-
Before CSI started, I watched thirty minutes of HUSH, HUSH SWEET CHARLOTTE on FMC. Still entertaining after all these years.
-
With three days off from rehearsal, I have some serious DVD watching to make up for. I know LOVE ME OR LEAVE ME will come first, and probably JUMBO right after. Then, from the to-watch shelf, I took out ASSASSINS, no, not the Sondheim masterpiece but the Sylvester Stallone/Antonio Bandaras thriller.
-
I watched last night's Alias. I'm afraid this show is now entering hopeless territory. They do this big Joel Grey thing, and then completely drop it in tonight's episode. Gone. Not even mentioned. Maybe he'll be back, maybe he won't. Now we get another "surprise" in the last minute of the show - and a completely predictable one. I think last night's episode, unfortunately, is a harbinger of what's to come. The giddiness of this show has been replaced by desperation, it seems to me.
-
MattH, I know it isn't Ask BK Day, so I will ask you instead. I am curious about your Cagelles in your production of La Cage. Are you using all men, a mixture of men and women, and if only men, are they gay or straight men?
-
And now - Dino at the piano.
-
I'm finishing up watching Deevorce, Eyetalian Style. Very witty and amusing.
-
Took my steaming shower early tonight - also drank my final EmergenC of the day early. I think it's been causing me to not fall asleep quickly when I drink it too close to bedtime.
-
And now - Dino at the piano.
I believe-uh in - miraclessssssssssss.
-
Does anyone have a clew as to what that means? If not, stay tuned for tomorrow's notes tonight.
-
DR Jose, I don't know how I missed you post yesterday!
I wonder what else I might have missed!!??
-
"Attention must be paid!"
-
Well gang, I shall be off the radar for the next two days or so. Will miss you all. I will catch up when I return from what Homer Simpson calls "America Junior", our neighbor to the north. (Apologies to all its fine HHW citizenry.)
-
"I never loved these huggers."
That's a line that always stuck with me from some Restoration play I read in college.
-
MBarnum, not sure what W&W you have seen, but I think you would enjoy THE CUCKOOS a lot. Lots of music.
-
I am now into KRITZER TIME.

Good Evening!
I, too, have just had a nice hot shower. I needed to wash the day's dust - and pollen(!) - off of me. *For you allergy sufferers, a shower before bed is one of the best things to do. It washes all those pesky pollen thingies out of your hair - which get transferred to your pillow. So... Where was I? Oh, yes...
I didn't too much other packing tonight. However, I did end up filling two small garbage bags full of assorted shredded papers. Unfortunately, I have a feeling I'll be filling a lot(!!!!) more bags full of assorted shredded papers in the coming weeks. I hope... sort of.. :-\
I did take my walk earlier - gorgeous evening for it. I made a quick run through Ukrop's to pick up some treats, and then to Mary Angela's for a very yummy meatball and cheese sub.
And that's about it for now...
-
I thought maybe you were exhausted from all the packing or contemplating your big move and the changes it might bring.
Well, that too...
;)
-
Took my steaming shower early tonight - also drank my final EmergenC of the day early. I think it's been causing me to not fall asleep quickly when I drink it too close to bedtime.
Yep, EmergenC can keep you up at night. Yes, it does provide a megadose of Vitamin C, but it also provides a bit of an energy boost. In fact, I learned from an actual Radio City Hall Rockette that EmergenC is the unofficial energy drink for them. In fact, their usual dose is TWO packets before each show. I also suspect that putting that much acid - ascorbic or otherwise - into your stomach causes some 'stuff' to go on in there too.

Safe Travel Vibes, DR Rodzinksi!
-What's your ever-lovin' Antonia going to do without you this weekend? Or has DR elmore already made the dinner reservations at Jean-Georges? ;)
-
OK - I'm outta here... Must be productive tomorrow! -And it also looks like I'll be seeing a play tomorrow night too.
Goodnight.

She'll probably sit in a chair and weep like she usually does when I'm gone. As will DR Elmore, come to think of it! :D
So long folks! This time I mean it.
-
It's 10:53 (according to my computer). I've put out the trash and recycling and I'm going to do my bills now. I usually wait until after midnight, but I don't want to wait. There's nothing on TV to watch, so I might as well get it all over with...then I can have a clean conscious and go to bed early. ;D
-
I just got back from fencing. I'm still in my get-up. I look fantastic.
I couldn't post from my room for some reason, so I wasn't able to say this:
"I have frequently not been on boats."
-
AARRGGHH!! My checkbook balance is off by fifty cents!! :o Adding up everything in my check register gives me one amount. If I take my final balance (as of this moment) from the on-line banking total and subtract everything that has not yet cleared, I get a different amount! How can this be?? Every amount that I wrote down in the register matches the amounts that have cleared. How can it be off by fifty cents?? I hate it when this happens...which, I must admit, has not happened in quite a while! >:(

Has Ann caught up? It's hard to catch up from Boot Hill.
And now - Dino at the piano.
-
Does Dino take requests?
And shouldn't it be:
And now the Dynamic Dino at the piano?
-
DR GEORGE I know what you mean! It's there someplace. Did you have an ATM fee or something?
-
Gene Rayburn just said something about how television is very complicated and that the words would be a superimposition.
And Brett Sommers said: "This entire show is a superimposition."

I shouldn't...and if I did, it should be showing somewhere!
-
New notes up very soon.
Ann is gone again. Boot Hill.
