Well, you've read the notes, the notes were stolen, and now it is time for you to post until the thieving cows come home.

Topic of the Day:  I've been robbed twice.  The first time was when I was living alone for the first time (after college) in Lacey between 1993-1998 and I'm pretty sure that I left my front door open.  Dopey me.  From my bedroom, they dumped out a box of VHS tapes (that would not be unwelcome in Larry's VCR ;) ) but probably didn't take any.  I had two VCRs at the time, and they took one (fortunately, the older one) and the corresponding remote.  But they left a brand new 3-VHS set of Star Wars 4-6.  Not really a great loss, in the grand scheme of things.

The other time that I was robbed was when several boxes of CDs of my musicals, and various DVDs were stolen.  That hurt.  I figure I lost over 300 musical cast recordings. :'( Of course, I didn't have any kind of inventory list, so I have no idea what was actually taken, just some things that I remember I had that I no longer did.  That was in 2009.

BK, I am so sorry about your car.  Did you call the police? I know that's often a futile situation.  When Toyland was robbed in 2007, I figured the police would file the report and that would be it. but several years later, they actually caught one of the thieves and I had to be a witness at the trial.

BK, I went to Amazon to check out that recording of Weinberger music you were playing, and I discovered a Weinberger operetta I never knew about! It's from the Komische Oper who produced that Straus Pearls of Cleopatra you liked so much, and I am looking forward to watching this. I'm sure I will get a few Amazon gift certificates for Christmas.

Also, BK, did I ever recommend Smetana's The Bartered Bride, one of my very favorite comic operas, to you? There are a nice DVD available, sung in German, and two DVD sets I am very fond of.

I admit I prefer the Czech Supraphon recording for two reasons: (1)Czech is the language it was written for, and (2)the German edition makes a cut in the Act Three "Dance of the Comedians."

Benackova and Stratas are both wonderful heroines and it's an equal toss up between Dvorsky and Kollo as the object of their affection. I love love love this opera, especially the wonderful Act Two duet for the heroine and mentally challenged young man her parents have arranged for her to marry.

Last night DR TCB wrote that THE YEAR I LIVED IN MIDDLETOWN would be a volume of his memoirs, but that most of the men in his life there were dead.....

I will only say what Ethel Merman once said in a similar situation:

My car was broken into once while I was in a rehearsal at the old Phoenix Theatre in Indy at 9th Street & Pennsylvania St.  Downtown.

They took all my change from the center console, but there was nothing else there.

I had locked the car so there was nothing else I could do.  The passenger door had been forced open....but it was fine and no windows were broken.

I was lying in bed awake and just about to get up this morning, when all of a sudden my iPhone and iPad started chiming to let me know there was incoming email. And they kept chiming. Sometimes you'll get two or three things at once, and I'm used to that, but this time the chiming didn't stop. It kept going till I lost count after a dozen or so, and I thought I might be getting hit with a barrage of spam. So I just let it continue before looking at anything, and it finally died down.

And then I looked. Not spam, just a bunch of regular people and companies I'm totally familiar with, all legitimate stuff, but I could tell these were things I hadn't yet seen. These were dated from yesterday the 20th back to lat Monday the 14th. Forty-seven (47) emails in all, that had been errant and truant. And I hadn't noticed because other stuff had been coming in normally.

On further investigation I now knew why I seemed to have missed a couple of eBay correspondences. Because there they were, along with a few CastRecL daily digests, a couple of credit card statements, and a few other things that are legitimate but which I generally ignore.

Finally, there was a personal thing that should have arrived yesterday -- a lovelier than lovely e-Christmas card from our own DR Elmore. Thank you very much, sir!

Title: Re: THE LITTLE THIEVES

And here's the kicker. Every one of these things was something that Gmail picks up and forwards from my older Comcast address.

I've been using Gmail for years. I never discontinued the older address because so many people have it, and there seemed to be no reason to bother putting through all the necessary changes. But now here's a major glitch that happened, so I think it's time to begin simplifying things.

First, I think it's best to separate the two and bring each set account's mail in separately. This daisy-chaining is even more insane on the Mac, where I have Apple Mail bringing in Gmail which in turn is bringing in the Comcast mail. So I'll separate those two, then gradually put through address changes so I'll eventually get it all down to one. Separating the accounts will make that next step easier because it will be obvious who's using that address.

TOD, Part I

No car break-ins that I recall, but one little theft from a car back in 1985. I had just moved from Redondo Beach to Schaumburg (Chicago suburb) that summer. I drove downtown and parked in a large valet-attended parking garage. Later, I found that the little change purse I always kept full of parking meter quarters had been emptied. That saddened me at the time because it had never happened in L.A., so I had kind of a sour taste in my mouth about workers in Chicago. I later realized how silly that was, because this would happen anywhere and I had just been lucky. I was also happy that they left the change purse, because I loved that little thing simply because it had been so perfect for that kind of thing. I still have it, even though I rarely use it, and I'm still fond of it.

TOD, Part II

House and Apartment Break-Ins

1. My friend and I, shortly after moving to L.A. in June 1972, came home one night (this was at Franklin and Whitley) to find the turntable and amp and speakers gone from the living room. I don't remember if that was all, but there had been some cash on the kitchen table and they'd completely missed that. We were as naive as could be back then, because here we were, now living in the big bad city and having taken no precautions such as locking the slider door to the balcony which is how the police showed us they'd entered. This unit was on the first floor, right in front, and climbing up onto those balconies was a pretty simple matter back then before people were installing barriers.

1a. Still naive (and that's putting it nicely) several months later, I parked my Schwinn bicycle in the alcove at the entrance to Pickwick Books, completely unlocked, and found it -- SURPRISE! :) -- gone when I came out.  DUH.

2. In 1988, just a few months before I'd be moving from West Hollywood (Kings Road) to the east coast, I came home from work one evening to find that one single thing from my audio/video rack had been unplugged and taken away -- the Beta HiFi VCR. They left everything else around it, which is absolutely inexplicable. This was on a weekday and I remember it was still daylight when I got home and discovered it. That evening I had a locksmith install a "long" deadbolt on the front door and a locking mechanism on the slider going out to the balcony. Yes, another slider and another balcony.

3. In 1999, having lived in this house for several years, Kristi and I came home to find the jewelry boxes in our bedrooms (containing sentimental stuff, nothing expensive) ransacked and emptied or missing entirely. The rest of the house seemed to be untouched, including -- again -- all of my audio and video stuff. The police came out and said that by all rights, the room with that stuff should have been emptied, and that I was very lucky. They also said it all looked like the work of kids -- very likely someone we knew, and that they were looking for easy stuff to carry and pawn. Locks changed, and nothing was ever found.

I think -- and hope -- that's the end of my little story.

DR Elmore:

I see that that Lost in the Stars CD carries a Music Masters label.

Is that by any chance an offshoot of the long-departed store of that name on (I think) West 43rd St.? That was one fascinating place. The little I actually knew of it was that for a pretty fee they'd send someone around to surreptitiously record live performances. Must have been a gold mine.

I believe I talked about my great nephew having to find a home for his kitty, because he and his girlfriend have two dogs that have been harassing the poor cat.  I said I would take the cat, but he had to be fixed and had to be tested for feline leukemia before I would take him.

Learning to fly was on his bucket list. NOTHING I ever want to do EVER will be as expensive as that.

He flew a wee Cessna for a few years.

I flew the wee Cessnas (high wing) off and on between 1977 and 1985. In those last few years I also flew Pipers (low wing) which I really liked. In that time I accumulated about 260 hours and made 401 landings.

For years I've intended to either scan or photocopy the logbook as a backup. At one point I designed an Excel spreadsheet to enter all the data and have it do all the math for me. The design is good but I didn't get very far because, to my regret, there were a number of entries made by instructors or others that were barely decipherable. They write like doctors, and very very tiny.

As for the expense -- I kept track of every penny spent in the pursuit of flying from my first textbook to the day I got my license in 1978. That year of instruction, materials, and practice flying cost me $1500. No one believes that now. Today it costs student pilots $1500 to get out of bed in the morning.

DR Laura I can appreciate the loss of  something as special as a flight log.

DR Laura, I never knew your husband was a pilot! Even for as short a time as I enjoyed being a private pilot, losing that flight log would be heartbreaking. I'm so sorry to hear that.

Learning to fly was on his bucket list. NOTHING I ever want to do EVER will be as expensive as that.

He flew a wee Cessna for a few years.

Cool.  Did you ever go up with him?  I have no desire to fly in small planes.

Lost in the Stars was one of Encores! best productions, and I wish it had got a recording.  The recording I mostly listen to the complete Julius Rudel one. Rudel conducted the NY City Opera performances.

I have this recording (it wasn't one of the stolen ones...fortunately).  I haven't listened to it in years, though.

Good Morning.  Looks like the boys are fine.  We are all glad that that episode is behind us.

First weekday of Christmas Break - I'm making beer bread for Christmas gifts, some with cheddar and bacon, some plain, some with just cheddar, it's quick and easy!

Great news about the boys.  Are you using light beer or did you find good beer to use?

I ended up grabbing a 12 pack of Blue Ribbon, which is fine.  I think light beer wouldn't have as much yeast as regular and I wasn't going to take a chance.  So far they look great.

All of these great thievery stories, and I forgot to tell about the time I was actually robbed; i.e., held up at knife point.

Cleveland, around 1971. My part-time job was driving a cab, which most of the time was quite enjoyable. Long story short, one night I was "hailed" at a downtown taxi stand and directed to a neighborhood that none of us ever voluntarily went into except maybe in broad daylight. The situation became crystal clear when I felt the blunt side of a cold blade held at the back of my neck. In the middle of a block with few streetlights, I was asked for the key which was tossed out in front of the cab. It was explained to me that I'd been good and wasn't going to get hurt as long as I waited five minutes after the gentleman departed, then I could get the key to the cab and continue on my way.

The police were involved, and my experience turned out to be much like other drivers had described, before and after. I heard they caught the guy some months later, but who knows.

Five minutes later, I found I had no telephone, no Wi-Fi, and no internet.  A second service man showed up about 20 minutes ago after I made three phone calls, and the problem was in putting the computer table back, the router got unplugged. What the fat hell do I know?

...and I’ve had a kitchen fail this evening.  I’ve used a shortbread cookie recipe for cut-outs that I got from my grad school roommate 48 years ago.  It requires a lot of hand kneading and tonight I tried using the dough hook on my new KitchenAid mixer.  The dough got way too crumbly, so tomorrow I’ll try again the old way.

I pressed the crumbly dough into a shallow pan and baked it as a sheet.  We’ll taste it soon and let you know.

Did you use the bread dough beater or regular beaters?  The crumbly dough might have worked well as a pie crust.  I have a cookie crust recipe that gets pressed into the pie pan like that.

Listening to Threepenny Opera, Decca with Mauceri conducting.  I must say, Mauceri has wonderful taste in music - can't be faulted - and occasionally he's made a decent album.  But he clearly knows nothing about sound and every album I've heard from him is recorded distantly and mastered too low.  I have never heard so lifeless a version of Threepenny in my life and you hear it from note one of the overture, which is funereal in pace.  Ute Hagen is fine and so are the most of the other singers.  But this requires energy and it also requires that the band be, I don't know, present?

Listening to the oddest Sibelius second I've ever heard, Thomas Schippers conducting.  I don't know if this was recorded during an LSD trip but it's pretty wacky.  The opening is so slow and ponderous, rather like Godzilla, and then the second movement's opening is on speed.  The recording itself is a bit dry, surprising for Columbia and the NY Phil.  Well, it's keeping me entertained.

Yikes! :o

I had some Gelson's snacks - a little stuffing and a little string bean casserole, then I had the rest of yesterday's Hormel chili - all in all about 1200 calories, I should think.

Tonight I watched and recorded to my computer what I hope is the last Hallmark Christmas movie that my niece wanted me to record. ::)

This was one of several Hallmark movies that were all based in the same fictitious town of Evergreen, Vermont, and featured characters from other movies as cameos.

Now, I'm converting the chunks (because recording the whole movie as one file doesn't seem to work) and then I'll combine them into one complete file.

As I'm making more bread. I'm listening to musicals that have a Holiday reference.  Besides Annie and Here's Love - what others are there?  And yes, I've recently listened to both A Broadway Christmas and a Hollywood Christmas!

I also asked my dentist if I would able to sing when all the work was completed and he said yes.*

This will be good news to all of the Music/Vocal Directors at PCPH....and I look forward to auditioning for leading roles when the PANdemic is over.

I never thought about that.  Thank goodness he said yes.

*That was his little joke that he could never sing before.

Oh, Ginny! I'm so glad your shortbread was a fail. I read that as you had "a kitchen fall." I am so relieved.

That was what I read, too.

Well, the celebration has started early. I cut one of the black radishes early and made a loaf of radish bread.

I don’t think I have ever heard of a black radish or radish bread.

Not being a fan of radishes in general, I hadn't either.

Darn.  I have rerecord five of the nine chunks of this latest Hallmark movie.  There are digital goobers that, hopefully, rerecording will fix.
