Title: LESSON LEARNED
Post by: bk on January 04, 2021, 12:07:29 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes learned their lesson, and now it is time for you to post until the learned cows come home.

SPOO!!  I fell asleep on top of my bed last night and all the lights were still on. ::) It happens.  I don't plan to be up much longer because it's a work day and I'll actually have to work at work.

Got a couple of good ideas in the shower and wrote more pages, - twelve, so I'm good with twelve.  If I'm feeling it, I might do one or two more before bed at two.  Right now, listening to Saint-Saens' Samson and Delila - some really pretty music and a couple of instantly recognizable "hits."

I'm having some problems this morning with my left leg, which every so often decides it no longer wants to support me, but so far I've been lucky to hold onto something secure before I fall.

I did stay up too late with CNN and MSNBC listening to commentators about that asshat Trump's latest attempt to interfere in the election.  My hatred for this inept too-stupid-to-succeed mafia don has surpassed my loathing and detestation of our AIDS president Ronald Reagan, rotten actor and scumbag politician.

Well, game leg or not, I still must do laundry, and I assembled everything yesterday afternoon. I've got to continue with Oh, Boy!, but I'm forming the opinion that the missing viola part I am creating never existed and the Australian pit only held violins, celli, and bass. If at least one viola part existed, I'd admit IU was wrong, but so far, nothing.

I've always thought I was a pretty good arranger and orchestrator although my insecurity kept me from pushing myself, unlike another on this site, but when I began work on the Packard Humanities Institute Musical Theatre Project in 2001, I had to write reports: status, critiques, discoveries, etc.  Most of them dealt with Babes in Toyland, since that was the primary focus of work between 2003 and 2007.  Suddenly, people of the project who were getting my reports began complimenting me on my writing. Coming from people whose writing I respected, like Robert Kimball, I was happily surprised.

During my time at Encores!, Joshie frequently told me I needed to write a book, so I started a desktop folder "Letters To Joshie," which contains comments on my family, paranormal experiences, things I've learned working on musical theatre reconstruction, opinions, etc. and that led to a memoir of my first 33 years, which a few people have read, but I wrote it during a lot of health and financial issues, 2016-2017, and it's very bitter and self-pitying.  I consider it a good exercise, and no more.

In 2017, I adopted Annabelle and Thatch, and I did very good work and made very good money on the Encores! production of The New Yorkers. We also recorded a still-unreleased demo of Moonshine & Mistletoe, which I thought would bring steady income (https://soundcloud.com/user5614139/01-opening_sing-all-men-mix3), and my mood lifted.  I started writing Annabelle and Thatch stories, and I've written what I think is a really good children's story for adults.  The original draft was a dud with submissions to literary agents, but this pandemic and my lack of work gave me March-October to revise it, and, thanks to comments from several wonderful DRs, I think it's much better.

What have I learned about writing? I'm better than I think I am and I prefer to edit, revise, and rewrite rather than consider it camera ready.

When I was grinding out choral arrangements, 1982-1998, I would proofread my manuscript several times before I turned it over to the chorus. At the first rehearsal, there would always be one or two glaring errors I missed.

We got snow last night -- thankfully, only an inch or so, because I was able to use the leaf blower to clear most of the driveway even before the plow guy got here. It's so nice when that happens. You can only do that if it's an inch or less, and not too heavy or sticky. This one was borderline, but it worked just well enough, and the sun and 40-degree temperature is taking care of the rest.

Tomorrow morning I go back to the dermatologist for another removal. I had a basal cell thing on my forearm, which the biopsy mostly removed but the rest still has to go. They don't do Mohs Surgery for that, the regular doctor cuts it out. I'll only be in there 30 minutes or so, but it's first thing in the morning so I won't be online till later.

Lines out the door and halfway down the block - thankfully, the business line was much shorter and actually in the bank, so I did that and THAT took almost another forty minutes or more.  Apparently, every BofA in the Valley is closed but Studio City.

We normally have our masks around our necks when we walk, pulling them up as needed.  Today we passed an unmasked woman walking a very nice black & white Siberian Husky.  As we were on a narrow stretch of sidewalk we moved into the quiet street to keep our distance.

The woman looked at us, pointed to her dog and said he is very friendly.  After a moment, probably with my mouth hanging open, I responded we were avoiding covid, or something like that.  I also waved my arm to indicate distance needed.

Keith said if she was that clueless she was someone to avoid.

Of course if we really had moved to avoid her dog, telling us he was friendly would not have mattered ;D

This Tanya Roberts thing is sickening.  So, she's alive now?

Yes, according to Cedars-Sinai.  I wish they would release a statement now.

I just managed to give myself a nasty paper cut. Fortunately, it is not bleeding profusely.

Last week, I got a paper cut...from cardboard! :o Fortunately, it didn't bleed too much.

I did the same thing a couple of weeks ago.  I think that was a first for me and was rather surprised by it ;D

When I was opening up a package of plastic wrap, I went to run my finger along the inside to break the seal.... it was the wrong side and I ended up running my finger along the steal serrated edge where you cut off the plastic wrap.  There may be a scar...

I find those serrated edges really dangerous.

The songwriter of that Christmas Carol thing would have absolutely been aware of our show - he contributed to LA Now and Then and went to LACC.  There is NO way he didn't know. But what can you do.

That was a first.  Keith had an Amber Alert on his computer.  It blared a number of times, plus he could not use his computer until they were done with the alerts, all for the same person.  I didn't get one on my computer.

George or Tom, did you?  It is for a 15 year old girl in Yakima.

Rowan Atkinson is not Maigret. Watched five minutes of an episode. Will need to read a novel or two to get rid of that blah taste.

Awhile back, while trying to stop the blaring, I somehow shut them down completely.

I didn't hear the noise.  I had my sound turned off, so I only felt the vibrating.

I'm quite over this day.  I did finesse yesterday's writing, but haven't even started on today's - I'm gonna have to tell everyone that nothing's getting done until after five so I can at least do half of what I'm trying to do every day.

Listening to some weird music - another Decca Entartete CD - Alexander Zemlinsky - two symphonies with a LOT of singing - not my favorite form - but his music is interesting and I'm gonna listen to more on the Tube of You.

Listening to beautiful Puccini - Turandot - von Karajan. Some people like, some don't, some prefer Zubin Mehta who, for me, is one of the worst conductors ever, but that one has Sutherland and it's one of the Decca things that has been remastered and includes Blu-ray audio - may give it a try if there's a really cheap copy around.
