Well, you've read the notes, the notes were in the throes, and now it is time for you to post until the in the throes cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: PREEMINENT!
-
I wasn't intending to, but I just wrote two more pages - so seventeen total and about ten to fifteen to go.
-
Good morning, all!
-
I slept well until 3:00, when I had to get up for a bathroom break. I had had a long dream about a job interview trip to a university outside Manhattan to teach in their musical theatre dept., and the class was in period performance styles.
-
After I got settled, Annabelle jumped down from her aerie to snuggle up and get warm, ands Stella kept romping on and off the bed. My legs became quite restless, and I got little sleep from thr point on.
-
This morning I must make a post box trip and mail the six payments and other nonsense I forgot to mail on Friday when I was out and about.
-
I've got two sets of Mascagni Cavalleria Rusticana and Leoncavallo's Pagliacci. Although her voice is an acquired taste, Callas acts the shit out of most singers, and I consider her Tosca recording one of the greatest. Here, she gets to do her light soprano Nedda in one and the heavier, she-wolf role of Santuzza in the other. The Karajan set has Joan Carlyle in the commedia dell-arte tragedy, and I wish it were Mirella Freni and Fiorenza Cosotto as the rejected and bitter Santuzza.
-
DR Ginny, wishing you and Richard a belated happy anniversary.
-
T.O.D.
My first discovered music?
Aside from children's records which my folks bought for me when I was little, I think my first music was Broadway shows.
My mother used to buy LP's of Broadway shows (OKLAHOMA!, KISS ME, KATE, eta.)...and I got addicted.
When I was around 9-10, my folks took me to see the road company of OKLAHOMA!, which was playing in Seattle.
It was my 2nd road show. The first was HARVEY with Joe E. Brown. Saw it when I was 5-years-old. Big disappointment that the rabbit never appeared on the stage.
-
Good news from bk on the book front.
-
I know it's not ask bk day, but reading today's notes, I'm wondering:
Have you ever had something you've watched or listened to during your listening/watching breaks while writing affect what you're writing?
-
Happy belated anniversary DR Ginny!
-
TOD:
In my early teens, I listened to a lot of top-hit pop radio. The Carpenters were particular favorites.
But as early as 2, I used to sit ensconced in front of the living room speakers, listening to albums that my parents would put on. A lot of that was classical, but with a mix of show albums thrown in.
-
Last night, I got 9 blessed hours of sleep, which was wonderful, compared to the 4 hours of the previous night.
-
I agree with DR elmore3003: bk should explore the operas of Benjamin Britten in his survey.
-
Monday morning greetings! Richard has an eye exam today and, while I have to go along to drive him home, I’m not allowed inside the office. What a weird world.
-
DR Ginny, wishing you and Richard a belated happy anniversary.
Thank you, DR Elmore. It was a quiet day.
-
Happy belated anniversary DR Ginny!
Thanks, DR Jennifer!
-
Good morning, all.
-
For those who must know, 9-1-1 returns tonight.
-
Good morning, all.
-
To answer Bk’s question from yesterday, no mail today.
-
Back to All Creatures for episode two.
-
Finishing the book vibes for MR BK.
-
Quiet week for me except for the Thursday blood draw.
Two appointments NEXT week - dental and six-month check up.....
-
My father and his friends had a country & western band that played gigs at fire houses and parks and barns when I was little.....so we always went to those. I sang a couple of songs when I was small - terrible sad songs about babies dying and kids being given away or left alone......
When I was five I heard my parents talking about James Dean dying in a car crash. The only JD I knew was Jimmy Dean - and a couple of nights later he was on TV. I was very confused.
About the same time Elvis Presley came along and I liked his music a lot.....and there was a song about a boy in black jeans or something who was killed in a motorcycle crash that I always listened for on the radio.
After that - it was all Top Ten stuff until about age 8 when I found out that show music existed.
-
The End.
-
Something just reminded me of this:
Several days ago when BK was reporting on whichever Met opera he was watching, he said it was surprising to see the principals take bows after each act. That was the tradition at the Met for many years, and it seems like it was dropped in fairly recent times. Or maybe they still do it when they're using the house curtain? It is indeed odd to see it left on the home video releases when they could easily do a fade-out on the applause like they do on the nightly streams. But that's what it was: Tradition!
-
TOD
The Sherman Bros., specifically by way of Mary Poppins. When I was 3, I saw the movie and learned the score, forward to back. My sister Annaliese taught me how to spell Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious. Picture a kid singing of carving his niche in the edifice of time and all that.
Then we got The Sound of Music soundtrack ...
-
And of course, there were hymns and carols.
-
Since we love Margaret Rutherford, we are watching The V.I.P.s.
Thanks, DR John G.!

I am glad you commented on this, DR ChasSmith. I had meant to, but had forgotten.
-
Another thing that the thing I was reminded of reminded me of in turn:
As to the lack of overall establishing shots in these telecasts:
The Met's productions of Falstaff are great fun at the end when, for that jaw-dropping final fugue, the house lights are brought up partially - just enough - as the titular character sings of the entire world being fools, audience and orchestra included. On the two productions in rotation -- the Zeffirelli and that modern-dress one -- the video producers pull back and give you some of that. So for one brief shining moment, the audience at home gets a hint of how fabulous that stage looked from right there in the house.
EDIT: They did that, too, at the end of Mahagonny way back when. On just the last phrase or so of "nothing you can do will help a dead man", we are suddenly treated to the whole picture from a camera positioned halfway back. I don't know if there are other such examples.
-
DR Elmore reminded me yesterday of that Solti Rigoletto that's noteworthy for not taking a single one of the standard cuts. I haven't heard that one in years, but it's the one I originally listened to when I was getting to know the opera.
As earlier Verdi goes, I *think* that recording still stands out as being one of the few to do this, but I suspect DR Elmore will know better than I.
-
Remember I mentioned there are some creepy looking dolls out there. Keith named this one Odo.

Enjoy. She's a hoot.

In Private Life, Jane Smiley goes into the influenza epidemic of 1918. And guess what? People who wanted to avoid the virus wore masks and washed their hands and stayed away from other people.
-
What a novel concept.
-
Back from a brisk walk. And a bit sopping.
It's cold enough to need my heavy coat, but warm enough that I get sopping wet when I exert myself.
-
No matter. I turn my coat sleeves inside out and let 'er dry.
-
Once I'm done walking, of course.
-
Otherwise, it would just be silly.
-
From TCB:
The most shocking thing to me was that after the ship capsized on her side and people had to basically climb to get out on deck; the passengers were basically mugged and robbed by a few of the passengers, as they came out on the deck.
:o

Monday morning greetings! Richard has an eye exam today and, while I have to go along to drive him home, I’m not allowed inside the office. What a weird world.
I feel very uncomfortable getting an eye exam and have put off my two month check wanted to get vaccinated first. If it doesn't happen soon I will have to get my eyes checked again.

Unbelievable ;)
-
Good Morning - home today for the holiday. Was going to go out for a lovely drive as it's a beautiful day out today. Alas, it looks like the day could be better spent working on projects for work and hanging with the boys. I may go for a walk later. Yesterday, I did a 22 mile bike ride, that was fun. Today, I think I may just stay put
-
Put on Cavalleria Rusticana as I don't think I've ever heard the entire opera before. I sang the Opening Chorus and the Regina Coeli in a concert once and Voi Lo Sapete O Momma was sung as well.
-
I'm up, I'm up - six hours of sleep.
-
I don't ever listen to music when I'm actually writing - I do know some writers who do. In the case of the new book, all will become clear when you read it.
-
Good afternoon!
-
Belated Happy Anniversary wishes to DR Ginny and DH Richard!
-
I also love Margaret Rutherford in The VIPs, as well as Maggie Smith and Orson Welles. Not so much the Burtons.
-
DR JANE - do you remember Poor Pitiful Pearl?

DR TCB I watched that program about the ferry sinking, too.
It was pretty awful......the event - that is.

I feel very uncomfortable getting an eye exam and have put off my two month check wanted to get vaccinated first. If it doesn't happen soon I will have to get my eyes checked again.
I haven't wanted to get an eye-check either, though I told my diabetes doctor I would before I see her again. And my appointment for that is two weeks from now.
-
I found the pots I wanted at a price I was willing to pay.
-
Mexican Talavera that has the right colors. They look great up next to the front door. I also found a few more other pots for the back yard.
-
I put the aloe vera and oregano I bought yesterday in the backyard.
-
I don't have plants for up front, except for a purple flower that I hope survives the summer.
-
Three!
-
I was surprised at the plants I saw at Walmart. they included geraniums in full bloom.
-
DR JANE - do you remember Poor Pitiful Pearl?
Thankfully I do not remember this ugly, pitiful looking doll ;D
-
I found the pots I wanted at a price I was willing to pay.
Congrats on your find :)

I don't blame you and I have been going every couple of months since covid :-\

George & TCB we went to https://form.findyourphasewa.org/ to find out we are eligible for the vaccine. You might want to check it out. Supposedly you get a text when you can get the shot.

We need photographic evidence of the pots of DR JOHN G.
-
I like this idea.

We need photographic evidence of the pots of DR JOHN G.
I don't know how to upload a photo from my phone.
-
Can someone help me?
-
You could email it to yourself (from your phone) and then save it to your desktop.
-
Though most of the time when I do that the file is too large.

We just watched RESISTANCE, an excellent 2020 movie about revered mime Marcel Marceau's tragic experiences during WW2.
Although I could follow the plot, I was unable to hear about 1/3 of the dialogue, primarily because the sound and sound mixing was terrible.
Indeed, this seems to be an issue with many theatrical movies produced during the past few years. We can hear television program and older pictures fine, but theatrical movies are a definite problem.
Perhaps Hollywood should re-examine their sound departments?
-
I can't think of a worse choice to play Marceau than Jesse Eisenberg.
-
I futzed and finessed for a whopping two hours - tons of adjustments, additions, subtractions, and moving stuff around, as well as smoothing everything out. Then I wrote a new page. Went and picked up a package - line out the door, all Amazon returns, but they brought me my package and I didn't have to wait.
-
Came home, made tuna sandwiches on bagels and ate those, and am now back to writing - three pages so far. We'll see how many are left, but not THAT many.

I am sure we will watch with subtitles which is a shame. I am looking forward to seeing the movie.

I was wondering about that.
-
Shouldn't the actor also be younger?
-
Washington State just dropped to age 65 and older. It is going to be crazy
The governor said we are now ready to move to Phase 1B on the vaccination schedule, and that the vaccination phase is changing immediately to include those who are 65 and older.
-
I do believe I have just finished my twenty-first book. I'm sure there will be a good deal of futzing and finessing tomorrow, and I'll probably really finesse the final two paragraphs, but I've finished it. Whew!
-
Congratulations!
-
Listening to Eugen Onegin
-
And I don't care who knows it.
-
Or even who nose it.
-
I gotta tell you.
-
Ordered some Fried Chicken from a local restaurant that has great fried chicken. Nice way to end a beautiful 3-day weekend
-
Very good news, bk. Congratulations!
Can't wait to hold it and read it.
-
And with that...
-
Let us welcome...
-
PAGE FOUR!
-
And good night, everyone.
-
Eugene Onegin was the first Met production I saw at the movie theater. I loved that production. Anna Netrebko was in it, as I recall.
-
Congratulations on finishing the book, BK.
-
Had socially distanced dinner with some friends . It was good to be around people for a while and relax.
-
I'm not ready to go back to work tomorrow. But I guess I'm going to.

Finished with my viewing.

With my viewing I'm finished.

I want to eat anything that's not nailed down, but I'm fighting the urge.

Could you believe those guys stealing people’s watches, and ripping their chains right off their necks!

I didn’t realize that they had legalized pots in Texas.

Why is there dialogue in a movie about Marcel Marceau?

;D

And why hasn’t my copy of that “un-named“ book been delivered yet?? I will be filing a complaint first thing in the morning.

Laura Benanti is going to be on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert tonight...probably not as Melania.

Hi, Tom and Jane.

Laura Benanti is going to be on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert tonight...probably not as Melania.
I was wrong. Stephen's going to have "a farewell message from Melania Trump." :D
-
Laura Benanti makes a good Melania
