Well, you've read the notes, the notes were Verdi good, and now it is time for you to post until the Verdi cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: MENSCH!

An enjoyable spoof.

Great medical news from DR Jane last night for her DS.

~~~TREATMENT AND RECOVERY VIBES~~~ for the co-worker of DR John G.
Love the logo for Project One!
-
Aida - tremendous performance and sound. So far, I like this better than Traviata.
-
Work will preclude me from watching the Inauguration live, but my heart will be in DC today.
-
Always a favorite - from Leontyne Price's farewell performance of Aida at the Met:
So moving!
-
My wife, Sandy, is having surgery this morning.
Positive thoughts, please.
-
Good morning, all!
-
I slept quite poorly, and I think it has to do with my anxieties about today's inauguration. I want it to go smoothly, and I wish nothing but the best for this new administration. That said, I trust neither Trump nor his loony gun-toting "patriotic" followers, and I will remain worried all morning that something bad will happen.
-
To answer your question from last night, DR George, I will be watching the events of the day.
-
BK, the logo for Project one is wonderful and so full of humor and heart!
-
Not political.
I thought this was funny:
I am not surprised. Verdi, like Picasso in art, went through periods of composition growth. La Traviata, Il Trovatore, and Rigoletto were early successes, and they pretty much follow the established Rossini-Donizetti-Bellini pattern of numbers and accompanied recitative, By the time of Aïda, relatively late in his career, he had moved past that style - probably due in part to Wagner and other composers (he saw and heard everything in Italy and France that he could) - to operas in which the connections between numbers and recitative are way less blatant. Aïda was composed along the "grand opera" lines established by the Paris Grand Opera, with ballets, and I believe it was his experience composing other French operas (Don Carlos, Les Vêpres Siciliennes, and adapting and revising Macbeth by adding a ballet) that makes Aïda the greatest grand opera.
Speaking of Verdi's other French operas, BK, you might like Don Carlos, which was one of Verdi's worst experiences in Paris. The opera was too long and Verdi had to deal with cuts and all the rules established by the Paris Grand Opera. The work was later translated to Italian and revised, and it has been performed for years as Don Carlo. The original Italian version was performed in four acts and Verdi later reworked it into five acts by adding a revision of the original French Act One.
My late friend, the late music critic Andrew Porter, in the 1970s discovered all of the music cut from the original Paris production in the archives of the Paris Grand Opera, and the BBC recorded the opera in its original shape. I really like this work a lot.
-
Of the two Italian versions of Don Carlos, I prefer the five act version, and this is my favorite of the recordings I have. There are several commercial recordings of thew French Don Carlos, and what you most often get is the Italian version translated back into French with appendices of selected materials from the cut Paris music. When Verdi prepared the Italian version of the opera, he recomposed some sections, so I recommend either the BBC recording of the uncut original Paris version or the standard five act Italian.
But Falstaff remains my favorite, and I think you would have a great time directing that, BK!
Thank you, sir. I can't even imagine dealing with that!
Someone had a lot of time on their hands!
-
In the 1960s the great Italian stage designer Lila di Nobili designed an Aïda for La Scala in which her costume designs were inspired by fashion of 1871, the year that Aïda was premiered. Here are Leontyne Price in the title role of the Ethiopian slave and the costume for Princess Amneris, her rival.
Someone had a lot of time on their hands!
Musicologists are as demented in their own way as others obsessed in their careers.
-
Scumbag Trump in his air escape speech just said Malaria was "so popular . . . soo popular." Maybe among her former johns.
This speech, by the way, is pathetic, nothing but nonsense and whining. I hope the plane crashes on its way to Florida.
May light and sanity carry the day.
I really enjoyed that James Corden One Day More number.
-
Mid to late Verdi is the greatest.
We did a concert performance of Don Carlo with Richard Tucker, Gabriella Tucci, and Cornell MacNeil in Severance Hall around 1971, and I think that's one of the operas I helped to stage manage, making sure entrances and exits happened as they should on my side of the stage.
Two unique memories from that:
It was the one time in my life I sat at a piano on the stage of Severance Hall. I played auditions for the smaller roles selected from local talent.
I also shared driving duties, and my big catch was driving Mr. Tucker from his hotel in downtown Cleveland out to Severance Hall for one of the rehearsals. Just him and me, and what I remember is his being bundled up to protect from the cold, and that he wasn't very talkative, probably very much due to my being completely tongue-tied in his presence.
There's so much to think about in regard to the great Verdi operas. My concentration is divided between that and watching the inauguration preliminaries, and I think I'm going to just settle in front of the TV for a while.
-
Vibes for Sandy.
-
The Sarasota Opera Company had a mission to stage all of Verdi’s operas, including different editions, if they existed. I got to see Les Vespes Siciliennes, Nabucco and others when I was living there. I also saw some good Puccini and others while I was there.
-
Waiting for my shingles shot.
-
DR George, thank for the link to the schedule.
-
Sandy is home and doing well.
-
The cats and I just watched the inauguration. I enjoyed much of it, but Lady Gaga continues to elude me. I much preferred Garth and Jennifer Lopez.
-
I'm up, I'm up - five hours of sleep. May go back to bed.
Wonderful. Wishing her a speedy recovery.
I don't believe Keith & I have ever been moved by the National Anthem as we were today. We applauded Lady Gaga.
We had to leave this morning, but not until after watching Biden become our 46th president.
So, just out of curiosity, all those planned rallies/riots beginning on the 17th and culminating today - has one of them actually happened, aside from one gun-toting ASS being arrested at a checkpoint two days ago? Because those were the threats - so, all hot air?
Sure looks that way. Maybe the outcome of the Capitol riot has all those "patriots" reconsidering going to prison for Trump.
-
Good news from DR DRUXY about SANDY.
-
Barnum did not like Lady Gaga - he hid his head while she sang.....but he came out and danced with Jennifer Lopez.
-
I enjoyed all of the performances and readings except one.....but that's okay.
I also thought I heard JRB say that Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation on January 20, 1963.....but it was probably my hearing....
-
That's why the arrests have been so important. To most of these ASSES it was a game, hence the selfies and all that crap. But there were a few who were more serious, but are they willing to go to jail? And their leader is now gone. Light and sanity, baby.
-
Barnum did not like Lady Gaga - he hid his head while she sang.....but he came out and danced with Jennifer Lopez.
Awww, poor boy. At least the next song made him happy.
-
Back from Xeroxing pages - I made one final little addition to one speech that I'd thought of yesterday and I liked it so in it went. Listening to the last of Aida, which will be followed by Falstaff, the Bernstein recording. The sound on this remastered Aida is beyond belief. I can only imagine that the Blu-ray Audio is even better.
-
Pulled pork sandwich coming shortly - that's within my calorie count and instead of mac-and-cheese, I'm doing a little Caesar.
The headline says: Trump extended Secret Service protection for 14 members of his family as he left office.
Will they need that behind bars?
-
Pulled pork sandwich was great - a bit soggier than usual so I ate it with a fork.
Listening to Falstaff.
Maybe...since none of them got pardoned. ;)
I like that messiness with pulled pork. That’s how I remember them as a kid. I think Dairy Queen offered them way back when. Pure nostalgia.
-
January 1st.....I typed wrong.....but I mean the year DR JANE....I thought I heard 1963.
-
Enjoying Falstaff. After that it's La Fanciulla del West. Still waiting on Boris Godunov and others. I got a screener of that Trial of the Chicago Seven movie, so I'll watch that today, and I also have a DVD of a modern opera called John Merrick: The Elephant Man by Laurent Petitgirard, the composer of the French Maigret series - love his music so am looking forward to it.
Off By a Few is the title of my next something-or-other.
Today was the first morning in a very long time I was excited to get up and begin the day.
-
Inauguration Evening greetings! We’ve been in front of the TV most of the day, but we just came in from the front porch where we watched the International Space Station zoom across our western sky.
-
How cool that you could see the Space Station. What a treat on top of this great day.
Cool! I've seen it five times now, over the last several years! And I wasn't looking for it. I just looked up to the stars and there it was!
-
Tonight was our third time to see the ISS since our quarantine began. It’s amazing every time!
-
Hello, everyone.
-
Belated anniversary vibes to DR Ginny.
-
Recovery vibes to Sandy. May she recover fully and quickly.
-
I had things to take care of this morning, but once I knew IT had happened, I felt lighter, stronger, healthier, as if a weight had been lifted from me.
-
I saw snippets of the Inauguration and had trouble tearing myself away from it. There was a tear in my eye, I admit.
-
Barnum did not like Lady Gaga - he hid his head while she sang.....but he came out and danced with Jennifer Lopez.
Photographic evidence would be much appreciated. Of DB JB, too.
-
Hi everyone! Been quite emotional all day with the inauguration and speeches, etc. Today is a great day. We watched most of President Biden's speech in class today and at the end of class I simply said "No matter what your beliefs are, this is a very historic day for America = not only for our 46th president, but for our first female vice-president.”
-
Vibes for John G's co-worker and her husband.
-
Jane, I can understand your relief over DS Bryan's vaccination. Did your daughter-in-law get one, too?
-
Tomorrow I'm scheduled for an ultrasound. I hope it goes smoothly. I know what the results are likely to be, but they have to see the evidence. I had to get rather insistent to get a phone appointment with the surgeon, but apparently I won because that is scheduled for next week. Cedars-Sinai thinks that everything can be delegated to a PA. No, I need to talk to the surgeon directly.
Jane, I can understand your relief over DS Bryan's vaccination. Did your daughter-in-law get one, too?
She is probably in the last group of 16 and above.
-
As you know I have been rather obsessive with tracking the vaccinations and how to get one. I now have an appointment for January 26th.
-
I was opening to get is sooner and will do so if possible.
Keith, because of my obsessiveness, and a stroke of luck, received his vaccination this morning.
I went with him as they had open time slots but they wouldn't let me have it and I couldn't sign up without an email invite. Since then the time slots have all filled up.
What an incredible day to be an American!
-
Yes it is.
-
Watched a good movie, then went to Gelson's to get hot dogs for tomorrow's food. Why are the bread shelves pretty empty? Last three times I've been there it's been that way? So, no more runs on towels? Now it's bread???
-
Watched the third episode of All Creatures, which was the one in which the horse has to be put down. It was as horrifying as the scene in the book. Yet it was handled very well. I'm liking this. Will spread out the episodes like candies, instead of bingeing them.
-
Yes, it has been.
-
Norma is the metopera selection tonight/tomorrow.
-
Falstaff is a choice next week, and it's not the production I saw recently. This one is from 2013. I may have to watch it.
-
Good night, all.
-
Listening to La Fanciulla del West - some of Puccini's most beautiful music, I must say. And Carol Neblett is fantastic.
-
Carol Neblett? I used to know her. I never heard her sing, though. I hadn't thought about her in many years.
-
I don't know about bread -- I've had no trouble finding it, but I buy GF -- but hydrogen peroxide has been among recent shortages. It kills germs in the mouth and I think it was being used as an anti-Covid strategy. I've learned to stock up, as you never know from week to week what'll be available.
-
TCB came and left. Is he watching Inauguration Day festivities?
Very, and of course Keith felt a bit guilty about getting it when I didn't.
-
We have had three days of nice weather. Each day I have walked farther trying to get back in the habit of getting out for exercise while Keith is on his airbike.
-
Today I walked a total of 10 miles.
-
My muscles are a bit sore but they feel good.
-
The rain is returning so I expect it will be awhile before I walk that far again.
I think the 25,000 National Guard members added to existing police, FBI, and Secret Service May have had something to do with it. Not to mention the leaders who have been arrested for their actions on 1/6/2021.
I don't doubt that, at all. I bought the CD when it was released way back when, but there's only one song that I still remember...and it was the only one that I remember that I really liked, "My Strongest Suit." I just like that song. :)
