Today, the family is going to my mom's for our quasi-weekly family meal.  I think my mom said that we'd have tacos, but we had tacos last time.  That's fine with me, but we'll see.

Have a good day, all!

And less than two hours from when I had placed the online order.  So, satisfactory all the way around.

I became kind of obsessed with Benjamin Britten's War Requiem after first hearing a live performance in college. I then bought the vocal score, and then the full score, and then started buying recordings every time a new one was released.  I still think the composer's own recording, and the first one, is the best.  It has been re-mastered and released with rehearsal clips, as well. Which, supposedly, Britten was adamantly against releasing.

I gave myself an extra 40 minutes of sleep, which I enjoyed immensely, and the cats didn't object at all.  I guess as long as they've got something else to obsess over, like destroying a window blind or tossing litter all over the bathroom, they don't care to pester me.

I have no plans today beyond Oh, Boy! I'm almost through Season 8 of my Midsomer Murders marathon.  Only ten more seasons to go. So far my favorite of all the episodes remains Season Seven's "The Ghosts of Christmas Past," which has humor, a creepy old manor house, a thoroughly rotten villain, several killings and two suicides, and a tinge of sadness.

I also think Jim Parker's music for the episodes is brilliant and adds to the success of the series.  He has several themes he uses over and over in different arrangements, which I really like, and his orchestration seems to be for the most part two reeds (mostly really good clarinet and bassoon players), piano, and strings.  For "The Ghosts of Christmas Past," he has a good time playing with traditional Christmas carols.

Had a pretty solid sleep. Mikey went bonkers early this morning, knocking things off my desk and exploring other areas of potential mischief. But I knew I hadn't left anything lying around that could be hurt so I ignored it and he went off to terrorize the housemates. They fed him at the appointed time and I was able to sleep in just a little bit.

I always enjoy DECEPTION.....

Bette's piano story from yesterday reminded me of a story that Oscar Levant wrote about in his autobiography.

During the filming of HUMORESQUE he was playing on a dummy piano while Pearl Kaufman played a piano near the set - John Garfield had one man's arm in his jacket sleeve fingering the violin and another man's arm in the other jacket sleeve doing the bowing while Garfield held the violin under his chin.

They finished the take and Levant said:  "Jesus Christ!  The five of us are great - we should go on tour!"

This is just something I'm curious about, if anyone knows:

Who is the "Ann Trulove" who has posted a number of Jerry Hadley videos on YouTube?

I'm guessing it's some demented fan.  I met Hadley backstage at the Met after a performance of The Rake's Progress.  My neighbor at the time sang the Ann Trulove in the performance; she covered for Dawn Upshaw and Kathleen Battle at the Met.  He was not pleasant, and I did not like him.  I later did some arrangements for an operetta concert with Dawn Upshaw in Vienna, conducted by Todd Ellison, and the morning of the concert Hadley cancelled, leaving Todd and Dawn to improvise a concert.  I believe that was the beginning of his vocal difficulties that led to his suicide.

I can't read the NY Times. From everyone's posting about it and the reaction to it, it seemed like another Times hit piece of criticizing Democrats.

Interesting.  I did not see that response to it.  At first I thought the piece was going to be critical & found it kind.  Oh well.  I was only half awake when I read it.

Yes. It was really a great way to end the season.

But my question is, which is more common in England: Merry Christmas or Happy Christmas. I always thought it was the latter, but I only heard that once in the episode.

I haven't.  I do have three blankets that are fairly heavy when I'm under all three...but I only do that if it's cold enough.  I'm not uncomfortable under the weight, but I don't know if that helps me sleep better versus not having all three on top of me. :-\

Here's a link to the concert. There are a couple of nice shots of the Tobin, the theater where I usher, as well as scenes of Italy where the pianist, Leonard Colafalice, lives.

Chopin, Morricone, Rachmaninoff and more on the menu.

Nice!  I'm listening to this right now. :)

The rain let up some this afternoon and I went for a pleasant hour and a half walk.  I returned home with just enough light to see to walk up our path.
