Title: THE SECOND SESSION
Post by: bk on May 03, 2005, 11:58:17 PM
Well, you've read the notes, you're now officially stoked about tomorrow's anniversary bash, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - their doing a third session on their own, singing Cow Cow Boogie.

I just read all the notes.  "The quickly learned their oohs and aahs..."  "I’m anticipating just Monday and Teusday...."  It must have been a long day for you, BK. ;)

Otherwise, Congrats on the easy recording session!

I'm copying a CD for a friend of mine and I'm making a case.  I have to figure out the measurements for the endcard.  I've scanned some pictures and want it all to be just right, but I'm never sure about the measurements because the scanned pictures when compiled are not even the approximate size of a regular CD endcard.  I have to figure the approximate ratio between the width and height.  Doesn't that just thrill everyone?? ::)

George, I have NO idea what you are going on about.  Who would ever spell Tuesday Teusday?  Or leave a "y" off "they"?  Certainly not me.

ALABASTER, baby, ALABASTER!

Ask BK-and-Anyone-Question-Day Questions:

For BK and anyone who makes CDs from records:  when you take records and make CDs of them, do you have any program to clean up the pops or hiss or anything like that?  If you break them up into tracks, do you do it manually or do you have a program/device that does it?  Do you scan the record cover or make just a song list in document?  How much work does anyone put into doing this?
Title: Re:THE SECOND SESSION

I am very tired and yet I do not feel like going to bed.  Add to that that the Mormon Tabernacle Bird Choir is outside singing the score Dreamgirls and, well, would I fall asleep with that caterwauling going on?
Title: Re:THE SECOND SESSION
Post by: George on May 04, 2005, 12:40:48 AM
I used to have the CD to the Dreamgirls Broadway cast recording, but I lost it.  A few days ago, I ordered a new copy of that and Shenandoah.  I've had the vinyl album for years, but I've never listened to it.  Now I won't have to go through the hassle of making a CD from the record.  It was quite inexpensive. :)

I enjoy the DREAMGIRLS score very much, not so crazy about the show, but I like a LOT of the score.

The sessions sound just wonderful.

One question for ASK BK day.  Where is the studio where you recorded?  Does it have a pedigree?  Are the walls alabaster?

What is the best studio you ever recorded in?

Here I sit at four in the morning.  I went to bed at one and have been lying there like so much fish ever since.  Most unseemly.  My head became abuzz with play stuff, and then I think the rotten Musso dinner started making me feel a bit queasy and I just couldn't lay there anymore so I got up.

The sessions sound just wonderful.

One question for ASK BK day.  Where is the studio where you recorded?  Does it have a pedigree?  Are the walls alabaster?

What is the best studio you ever recorded in?

We recorded at Westlake Audio, where I've done many sessions here in LA.  Westlake has two facilities, the one we were in on Beverly Blvd. near the Beverly Center (formerly Kiddieland), and one close to La Brea on Santa Monica Blvd.  Bigger sessions were usually done there - like the Petula and Helen Reddy albums, Drat! the Cat!, Night of the Hunter, etc.

Our favorite LA studio to record bigger sessions in is called O'Henry - it's the best in town really and was the home of Do I Hear a Waltz, and the Sherman Brothers orchestra dates.  I think we did a handful of others there, but I can't remember which - they would have been amongst the very last things we did.  We used Rumbo Recording for quite a while, but it became too much of a jaunt, as it was located in the northwest side of the valley (Rumbo was owned by the Captain and Tenille - they finally sold it a couple of years ago).  In the very early days we used two studios with similar names - Tracks, and Trax.  They were functionable but not great.  We've used an assortment of others for various dates.

In New York, in the early days we used an awful place on 42nd Street, the name of which I've wiped out, but elmore might remember.  That is the studio where I threw one of the only major hissy fits I've ever thrown, which had to do with the engineer (in the days before Vinnie came to NY to do the recording).  Then we used Manhattan Beach, which I still use for vocal dates.  That, by far, was the studio we used most.  For big cast albums we used Clinton, but by the end Clinton had really gone to hell and was just too problematic.  We used the state-of-the-art and hugely expensive The Hit Factory for several of our big cast albums - that, too, seems to have bitten the dust.  We liked Right Track a lot, and from what I understand their new and bigger facility was and is the rival of the old Hit Factory.

Oh, my, BK was up late. When I first got here he was still on at just after 7am.

No questions for anyone yet.

George, when we first started making copies of LPs and CDs we put LOTS of work into the label and the card trays, scanning in album material, using different fonts, etc, etc, etc. As much fun as it was and as beautifully  as some of our projects turned out, it's a LOT of work (as you know). Now if I'm making a copy of a CD, unless it's for someone or some special project (like my BBC CDs), I just take a CD Sharpie and write the title on the disc. I will make a photocopy of the book if it's available so I have the information but I don't  do half of what I used to do. I also found out after making copies for some people that there are those who don't want a paper label on their CD. OK, less work for me.

When we do LP to CD transfers we use a friend's dedicated machine. It's a stand alone burner hooked into his stereo system so there is no sound editing software. I have very basic software on my computer so when I record from the Internet or record a cassette tape to the hard drive for burning to a CD I don't have the option of cleaning up or making nice sounding fades or cross-fades or the like. I will probably get some new software the next time we get a new computer but since our little baby is working fine right now I don't see that happening for a while. I also doubt I will change the software I use to record from the Internet since it's so simple and easy to use. It's just shareware but it works like a charm and I'm very happy with it. I could use more full-featured software to fancy up a track or segment once it's recorded but I'm usually happy with the way my recordings turn out.

And on that note (C#) I will leave for a while.

Hi, Larry, Bye, Larry.

Good morning, all!  DRDanise, sorry I missed you today.  I slept until 7:30 this morning.  I have lab tests for the surgery this morning, can't have any coffee, so I slept in.  I have to leave shortly.  The tests are at 9:00.

Didn't you first use a studio, Dear Friend BK, on 45th Street (I think) between 8th and 9th Avenues? Robert Sher had some connection with the owner there, as I recall.  My memory is that was the studio for Liz and Unsung Sondheim.  I have no memory of where Unsung Musicals was done now, but it was a fast change because of the evil violinist Michelle.  Oy!

Did anyone watch the 2-parter LAW & ORDER last night?  I thought it was good and creepy.

Yes, I can't remember the name of the studio - it was a nice enough studio and I remember the recording engineer was named, I think, Geoff or something like that.  He was very good.  We did both Liz and Unsung Sondheim there, and I think we did the Unsung Musicals rhythm date there and then moved for the string and horn date.  Can't remember where we did the vocals.

DR Michael Shayne, if you have 6.1 sound, look for DVDs that have either Dolby Digital-EX encoding or DTS-ES encoding. There are quite a few DVDs that use that back surround channel (in addition to the rear surround channels). The STAR WARS DVDs come immediately to mind.

And if your receiver is like mine (and if it's decoding 6.1 or 7.1 channels, it is), you can manually have the receiver decode 5.1 Dolby Digital DVDs into 6.1 tracks.

Now, you have to be careful because sometimes the back surrounds collapse into just sound from the center back speaker when you do this manual switch to 6.1 decoding, but with most recent films, you can do this and it works effectively.

Yesterday DR Joey said
Quote
My exciting news of the day is yesterday I signed up to support a foundation that raises money for Neurofibromatosis (which is a genetic disease I have) through running my marathon. I am using justgiving.com and so far I have raised $65. I am excited and I am hoping to reach at least $250.

May also happens to be Neurofibromatosis Awareness Month so it seems fitting that I am raising money for it through a a marathon in May. I know three weeks isn't much time to raise money, but I figure whatever I can raise is going to do good somehow. I did my last long run before the marathon (18 miles) today so now I get to take it easier these next three weeks before the marathon. I am probably going to try to raise money for them again with another marathon. If you raise $3500 they will pay your airfare to and from any marathon you choose. So I am hoping to exceed that goal next school year.

How can we make contributions dear Joey?  I would love to help

 AMAZING RACE FROM LAST NIGHT

Okay so as soon as Dr MBarnum watches i'm sure he will be devastated. :(  But I was happy by last night's show.  Gretchen and Meredith had to be the slowest luckiest team I've seen get this far.  They were sweet.  But they had so many opportunities (with the bunching), yet always came in last.

Their polar opposites, Rob and Amber continue to impress me.  Every time the teams were brought together, they somehow managed to finish first.  I liked them before the series started.  But I really had no idea they would be this good at the game.

I cannot wait to see what happens next week (I just pray that ron and kelly don't win).  Rumor a while back had them coming to Montreal. IF so that would be so cool!  Can't wait!

While I've been catching up with the posts, der Brucer has been watching the National Treasure DVD.  The study (and computer) is located next to the living room, and I've been following the film easily just by listening.

I am now convinced that Jerry Bruckheimer would have been very frustrated back when movies were silent.

I'm feeling all poopy today.

Last night's A.I.:  I liked Vonzell's songs...very much.  Scott was marginal on both songs.  He doesn't have a good voice.  Carrie was good, but "robotic" does seem apropos.  Bo was "predictable" on "Stand By Me" -- he doesn't have a lot of range...and it's one of the "safe" songs he could have sung.  He brought nothing new to it, however.  Strange how the judges criticize those they don't like for not making a song their own and then just ooze praise on someone who does a song by rote.  Bo didn't do it for me last night at all.  Anthony's first song last night sealed his fate.  It was the worst of all possible renditions of the worst of all possible songs he could have selected.  He has no taste in songs.

Vonzell was last night's best by virtue of performance, presence and risk-taking.  Anthony was last night's worst by misusing a magnificent instrument.

Oy, what a week!!  First, we had our last weekend of Pajama Game, which went fairly well, although at the last performance Sid completely botched Blue Town (or whatever it's called), which made doing the string underscoring next to impossible.  Then we had our little benefit in remembrance of the departed director (the one I needed the Sugar charts for), where all four singers (two of whom are Equity, not that that means anything ;)), went completely up on various lyrics, making my accompanying next to impossible.  Then, AOL decided I had exceeded "rate limits" and prevented me from emailing anyone.  I literally spent 4 hours on the phone with various people in the far reaches of India, none of whom were even barely intelligible, and none of whom (obviously) had a clue as to how to fix the problem.  I am most desirious of suing AOL.  Any attorneys out there wanting a slam-dunk class action suit?

Yesterday I posted to Max Preeo's listserve about our version of Reefer, since several listers had emailed me very sweet messages about how vapid they found the L.A./Showtime version.  So this morning I get an email from the list's resident Newport (some of you will understand that reference), who informs me that my message was not clear:  was I referring to an early version of the L.A. Reefer or a completely different version?  And if I was referring to a different version, why was I bothering to post about it?  I shall scream (ooh, a Lionel Bart reference).

So, this is my first day off in several weeks, and I am doing domestic things like cleaning, etc.

Since I have missed the past few days, my Ask BK/DR question may have been answered already:  Did anyone watch Eileen Ryan in that TZ episode, and did you or did you not think she bears an amazing resemblance to Meryl Streep?

I hope that this hasn't been posted before (it certainly hasn't been posted today!), but my friend Kathy sent me an e-mail (and I still have the e-mail to prove it ;) ) with THIS (http://upchucky.net/~upchucky/flash-fun/thongs.swf) link.

I have to warn you all that there is a "thong" reference, but before anyone gets upset about me mentioning the "T" word, let me just say that it's pretty funny!!  It takes a little time to get to the punchline, but I think it's worth it! ;D

I found this and thought I would share because it is sad...

500 Greyhounds Need Rescue...the rest die May 14th!

CONTACT: Dakin Animal Shelter (in MA) at 413-548-9898 The
greyhound track in Plainfield, CT voted on April 26th that they would
discontinue greyhound racing. Unfortunately - and heartbreakingly -
they've also decided that rescuers have only two weeks to get the dogs
out, and any dogs remaining at the track on May 14th will be
euthanized.
This is a monumental task because there are at least 500 dogs currently
at the track. These are all young, healthy dogs, 2-4 years of age, who
would make great family pets. We've committed to saving as many dogs
as we possibly can in the next two weeks. How can you help?
Adopt a greyhound They're wonderful dogs - gentle, quiet, sweet,
and
graceful. The ones we'll be getting will be good companions with
other dogs and with cats. Surprisingly, they're couch potatoes.
They
do need to be in a fenced area or leash walked; they aren't dogs
to
let run loose. For information on what it's like to take a
greyhound
home, visit www.greyhoundgang.com. To find out what greys we
have
available for adoption, call us at 413-548-9898 or visit our dog
adoption page.
Foster a greyhound We will provide all their medical care and a
crate to make their transition easier.
Donate money. We are going to need extra funds to help these
dogs
for crates and medical bills. You can send a check to: Dakin
Animal
Shelter, 163 Montague Road, Leverett MA 01054, or donate online.
Please mark your donation "Save the Greys".
Donate a large dog crate. We need these to send with the dogs
going
into foster care.
Spread the word! The more people who know about this tragedy,
the
more help the dogs will get.
Greyhounds are lovely, gentle dogs...
Greys are not hyper - they're actually couch potatoes!
They love to run - for about 5 minutes - in a safe, fenced area.
Greys spend most of their day snoozing and adore soft sleeping
places and all the comforts in life.
They are actually very good dogs for apartments or small homes
because of their low activity level.
They are very clean dogs, and in some ways are very catlike in
their
cleanliness and love of comfort.
Most greyhounds - including all the ones we'll be getting - can
live
with other dogs and cats, once they've been introduced, and
actually
love living with other animals.
They rarely bark and shed little.
In their life on the track, they live in crates for 22 hours per
day, so most things in the 'real world' are a surprise to them.
They've never seen simple things such as: slippery floors (wood,
tile); stairs; television; windows; cats; dogs who are not
greyhounds!
They generally housebreak very easily because they're completely
crate trained (they aren't housebroken because they've never
been
in
a house, so they have to learn what a house is!).
They walk very, very politely on leash - they learn that at the
track.
Greyhounds are very good companions for homes with gentle
children
because of their own gentle nature.

DRJMK, your version of REEFER MADNESS is now the 4th one I know of!  I very much enjoyed the over-the-top Showtime movie, and I have friends who have seen it up to 12 times now (I'm on about #4).  My friend Russell Warner wrote one back in the 1980s, which I've never seen, and I remember an off-off-Broadway production from the mid-1980s as well.

I thank you all for the excellent vibes and wishes today, but it's been hellishly awful:  my appointment was for 9:00, I was there by 8:45, and I wasn't seen until 10.  By the time I'd finished with x-ray and EKG, it was 11:45., and I got to the subway to hit the recording office.  The trains are ruinning slow today, so I waited about 20 minutes before one came.  All omes said to go home and go to bed, but I went to the office, cleaned up my debris a bit, reshelved books and music, and came home.  Breakfast was not on my agenda this morning.

I may watch Colossus of Rhodes later today, after I write some more.  Nice to get back to the writing, and because of my restlessness last night, I came up with some really nice ways to flesh out the first part of the first act - I've already added over two pages (seems like so much more - I really dislike the playscript program of Final Draft), and will be adding at least ten to fifteen more througout the act.

If anyone is interested, SUNY Brockport's theatre department has announced the plays they have chosen for next year:

A PIECE OF MY HEART by Shirley Lauro
MARAT/SADE by Peter Weiss
TERRA NOVA by Ted Tally
LUCKY STIFF by Ahrens and Flaherty

What do they all have in common?  Implicitly or explicitly, there is a dead body in each and every one of them!

Oy, another season that's an uphill battle to promote.

I bought it yesterday at Costco.  I haven't watched it yet, but I will.  Costco also had the 1-disc widescreen DVD paired with either "Dangerous Liaisons" or (I think) "The Bridges of Madison County" for the same price as the 2-DVD set on its own.  I was not interested in either of the other movies, so I didn't get the set.  Plus, I want the bonus stuff.  I also bought the 2-CD complete recording of the movie soundtrack.  I'm not interested in just the "tunes" from the movie.  I like to get the whole thing, if it's available.

I went to their website (http://www.dakinshelter.org/news.html) and it was updated today.  Here's the new first paragraph with changes in bold:

The greyhound track in Plainfield, CT voted on April 26th that they would discontinue greyhound racing. Heartbreakingly, they also decided that rescuers would have only two weeks to get the dogs off the track; fortunately the kennel folks at the track have been able to get a court order to extend this time. This is a monumental task because there are between 800-1,000 dogs currently at the track. These are all young, healthy dogs, 2-4 years of age, who would make great family pets.

I work with a woman (my previously mentioned friend, Kathy) who has two rescued greyhounds.  I forwarded the information to her.

Elmore:  There are a lot more than 4 versions!!  There have been at least 3 other versions that have played in Seattle and Toronto.  And our copyright search uncovered our favorite:  Refer Madness, an industrial film about industrial refrigerators (I kid you not).

George thanks for the update.  I hope they can find homes for all of them.  When Echo had the strange condition similar to Lyme disease my research mentioned tick infested Greyhounds were spreading it as they are sent to homes across the country.  So anyone rescuing a Greyhound might want to check it for Ehrilichiosis, especially if the dog shows arthritic or neurological symptoms.

JRand I will remember what you said after I get around to watching the movie.  I set TiVo to record it and who knows when that will be.

TAR:  Well, I loved Gretchen and Meredith, but were there ever two more STUPID players on this show?   ;D  I mean, here they are 70-something, with a choice to solve riddles or hoist 200 lb. boats, and what do they choose?  I half-expected there to be an episode with a road block:  Cliff or Cake.  If you choose cliff, you must jump off this 200 foot cliff with no parachute.  If you choose cake, you must eat a piece of yummilicious chocolate cake.  At which point, Gretchen and Meredith turn to each other and say, "Well, I guess we'd better jump off the cliff, then."

Good Afternoon!

I AM OUT!!!!!

-Well, actually, I've been "out" since I was 17, but that's beside the point.

I loaded the final bag of stuff from my old place into my car about an hour ago.  I did one final vacuum and dusting/Swiffer-ing , pointed out what I had left behind, and what should probably be brought to the attention of the landlord - after moving some more shelves, I found a few more mouse holes.  Then after a brief quasi-exit inspection with my roomie, I got into my car and drove off.

:)

-Since I'm here this week with Mamma Mia!, I just went ahead and had my mail forwarding request effective for next Monday, so I'll just pop by the place each afternoon this week to pick up the day's mail.

I also took a bunch of boxes from Steve's place to the recycling center, and a bag of garbage to the dumpster.

And now....

I'm just taking a little breather.  I need a nice shower, and then a nice dinner before I have my nice show tonight.  ...Then I can catch up on today's posts.

Whew!

So...

In the meantime, VIBES to those who need them.

Laters...

Have to run, but I was sorry to see Gretchen & Meredith go, even though I knew they'd never win.  And as JMK pointed out above, they had to have chosen some of the strangest roadblocks to do.

I am still all for Uchenna and Joyce pulling it out...with each installment they grow on me.  (Not unlike a fungus.)

I saw about 20 minutes of PHANTOM at my friend's house today as he got lunch prepared. As I said before, I will not put one dime more money in ALW's pocket on his PHANTOM project. The twenty minutes I saw and heard looked good, the Phantom (Gerard Butler) does not have a trained voice but certainly hits all the notes and is even more gorgeous to look at than Patrick Wilson's Raoul. Christine (Emily somebody) has a slight, pretty voice and is lovely to look at. I don't fault the choice of these actors as they seem right for the roles and in a motion picture on the big screen you want these operatic-melodramatic emotions played by pretty people. Those who cried foul about Crawford and Brightman not repeating their stage roles are not being realistic. I wouldn't want to watch either of them magnified on the big screen (or close-up on my TV) for over two hours.

I still just can't stand the material, so no PHANTOM DVD for me. My friend loved it, however, and will eventually let me borrow it to finish watching.

When I got home, I watched the first hour of the two hour LAW & ORDER marathon from last night that featured Angela Lansbury as a wealthy matriarch with a serial rapist son (played by Alfred Molina). Their lawyer was played by the adorable Bradley Cooper (from the first two seasons of ALIAS). Rita Moreno was also a guest star on the show! A starry cast!

I'll finish the second hour when I go back downstairs a little later.

DR JENNIFER - I think that Rob should have Yielded Uchenna & Joyce - I think that more than likely would have knocked them out.  Ron & Kelly were not that far behind them and no matter what they did were going to come in second last night.

I think I talked about it last night....next week two hour finale!

Forgot to mention that, of course, Bebe Neuwirth plays an ADA trying the case (she's the star of the latest offshoot LAW & ORDER: TRIAL BY JURY, so it made sense for her to be there) so that added even more star power to the actor line-up.

I know that Sarah and Michael never had a chance to play Christine and the Phantom (respectively ;)), but I always wonder, what if Sarah had played Carlotta?  She certainly has the voice and I think it would have been nice to have had everyone do their own singing.  I've seen interviews with her and she's got a sense of humor.  I think she could've done it and been very good.  Any thoughts??
Title: Re:THE SECOND SESSION
Post by: Matt H. on May 04, 2005, 02:06:30 PM
Well, the bits I saw with Minnie Driver today were very funny. I'm not sure Sarah would have been as effective. I'm also not sure she would have taken the lesser role when it was Christine that she wanted.

And since ALW financed the film himself, he may not have wanted her in that part (though I understand their divorce was amicable).

Bruce what do you mean they aren’t that sort of establishment?  Don’t they pride themselves on quality and service?  I wouldn’t expect you to ask to be comped but after you complained I would have expected something, especially for a long time regular as yourself.  They might have at least offered free desserts.

Musso's is Musso's.  They don't give a crap, at least the host last night (a new face to me) didn't give a crap.  And it's not a cheap place, so I'm probably going to call at some point today or tomorrow.

Of course I was sad to see Gretchen and Meredith leave :(   But I sure did enjoy them while they were in the game. Besides the boats what was the other choice? And why didn’t Romber and Ron/Kelly have to do the boats? Or did I miss something?

My guess is that Romber will win...I do think that Rob is a very good player....Amber does nothing...therefore I don’t think they should win...Ron and Kelly...well, Kelly really gets on my last nerve...she also does not do a whole lot, therefore I don’t think they should win...Uchenna and Joyce...now there is a couple who both really put there all into the game (and you know what...Gretchen and Meredith did also..just not with the same results! LOL)...and U and J work very, very well together...therefore I think and hope that they win!

Any way that it goes, however, for me, The Amazing Race is one of the most enjoyable, most entertaining game shows around and I am already looking forward to the next season!!

So, when I was doing the Ray Courts show, I met a very nice gal who was sitting across the aisle - Claudia Wells, who played Michael J. Fox's girlfriend in Back to the Future.  She hands me a card for a store she owns and it turns out it's literally two blocks from my house, almost next door to the DVD place, and I've passed by it a million times.  The store is called Armani Wells and they specialize in male clothing that she gets from a variety of places - movie costume people, cast-offs, or however - the clothing is literally like new, and the brands are all major.  I told her I'd come in and she could make me a fashion plate.  Today I went in.

Outside on the half off rack was a really nice coat, marked at 175, which meant it was really less than ninety bucks.  Really cool, so I took that in.  Claudia was there, and she outfitted me with some great stuff.  I have no sport coat that I can wear (the one I own is from my super thin days and, as we all know, those days are gone and may not ever come back), so I got three great sport coats, one of them a 1500 dollar Armani which cost me $175.  Even if I wear them only occasionally it's a great deal.  The others were even cheaper.  Now, when I go to Crustacaen, where a sport coat is required, I won't have to wear one that's three sizes to small.  She picked me out six incredible casual shirts, the kind of thing that I like when I see, but which I never seem to be able to find in stores.  Retail on these shirts would surely be in the hundred to two hundred range - here they were all under thirty bucks.  I got three pairs of pants, average price about thirty-five bucks (one pair Armani), one pair of nice black shoes (so cheap I don't even want to mention it - they're plain, but it's nice to have a pair in case I should need them.  Finally, she threw in one more shirt as my first time shopping there gift.  I may go back in a couple of weeks and see if I can pick up a suit.

AMAZING RACE POST:

SKIP THIS POST IF YOU ARE NOT A TAR FAN>

DR JENNIFER - I think that Rob should have Yielded Uchenna & Joyce - I think that more than likely would have knocked them out.  Ron & Kelly were not that far behind them and no matter what they did were going to come in second last night.

I've been thinking about who they should have yielded.  My gut says that they made the right choice to yield R/K.  First off Romber did not know that Ron and Kelly took a taxi and were 1 hour behind them.  Rob wanted to make sure that he yielded his toughest competition. And he wanted to ensure that they would win that leg of the race.

Also, they did not know exactly how far behind U/J were.  So by yielding Ron and Kelly there was still a chance that they would finish last (and it almost worked since U/J and M/G both arrived shortly after Kelly started the bus challenge).

The only reason they would have had to yield U/J would be to ensure that they went home.  And that would leave rob and amber to play the finale against a weaker team (G&M).  However it would mean they would definitely have to face ron and kelly.

Actually i'm happy that they didn't yield U/J. Because i would not have wanted them to lose (or Gretchen and Meredith) to stay simply because of the yield.  I don't mind if the yield is used to slow teams down. But i hate the idea that anybody would lose strictly because of it.  And i definitely think that Uchenna and joyce are much more deserving to be in the finale than G/M.

Romber and R/K chose the Sherlock Holmes detour.

DR Mbarnum, I knew you'd be sad to see Gretchen and Meredith go. :(

Too bad that she didn't do drive the doubledecker bus.  That would have been funny. :)

I don't want to say who I think will win (since I accidently read the betting spoiler - which may or may not be correct).  But I do think that Rob and amber are the best team.  So I would like them to win.  Ron and Kelly have been very close to them all season, so one would think they would be close behind.

However near the end it really depends a lot on flights.  Probably one team will take a chance, and that could pay off or cost them big.

I actually totally agree with what you said about Uchenna and Joyce.  I really like them as a couple. And they have shown more and more each leg.  And i love how they interact as a couple.  They are so positive and lovely.  The only problem that I have with them is that they are clearly not as strong as the other two teams.  They have made plenty of errors and finished in the middle much of the time.  However if romber doesn't win, then i hope they do.

I also sort of agree with you about Ron and Kelly. I don't care for them.  But they grate on my nerves equally.  I find ron to be very cold.  Although he clearly tried to be supportive of kelly in the cab last night, and she pushed him away.  I hate how she airs their dirty laundry on this show, and I would be amazed if they were still together.

And of course you know how i feel about romber!  So will you watch their wedding on tv in 2 weeks? :)

I don't know if I will watch Rob and Amber's wedding or not...if the special is more then just the wedding itself, then I might...in other words I want to history, some interviews with guests, family, friends, etc.

It all might be fun for curiousity sake.

Of course if Meredith and Gretchen are attending, then surely I will watch! LOL!

I think they should do a special next time Meredith and Gretchen have an anniversary...I would watch. Of course I might be the only one.

Der B and I have already been booked for the next two days, transporting dogs up the highway to be picked up by other groups.

Friday will be a boxer.

Thursday, tomorrow, will be a very pregnant ... something.  We haven't been told what she is, but she is apparently very very expecting.

Der B is half tempted to tell them "Oh, why don't you let us take her in for a few days!"  It would be something new for both of us.

Not only won't you get much sleep but you will have tons of laundry to do.  Which reminds me, don’t forget to put towels or a blanket down in the car, just in case those puppies are born while you are transporting the mother.  I would put a plastic liner under the towels.

I just finished listening to the original London cast recording of Mary Poppins.  I don't know the movie very well (so I don't have a great affection for it...feeling that any stage version will not be worthy), but the CD of the London cast is absolutely delightful.  Even though I had the songlist listing the composers in front of me as I was listening to it, all of the movie songs were familiar, so I actually knew without looking which were new and which were the original movie songs.  The new songs seemed to fit right in, but some were a little bit darker.  I assume that they're closer to the tone of Travers' original books (which I've never read).

Anyway, the booklet has the complete lyrics (no synopsis, though) and lots of good pictures.  The set looks wonderful.  And instead of Mary and Bert singing along with animated penguins during "Jolly Holiday" (that's the song that they sing with animated penguins in the movie, isn't it??), they have statues that come to life.  Highly recommended. ;D

Does anyone else have this and not like it?  Just curious.

I finished the last hour of the LAW & ORDER marathon, and I enjoyed the show; very entertaining and all. However, I read more than one reviewer who said that Angela Lansbury's guest turn would more than likely finally win her that elusive Emmy.

Now, I adore Angela Lansbury second to none, and she was indeed commanding and thoroughly professional on these two L&O shows. But don't dramatic Emmy guest star winners have to do some hair-pulling, overemphatic (meaning over-the-top) performing to win those Emmys? William Shatner and Sharon Stone won them last year both playing over-the-top wacky characters (I think Stone's was insane, wasn't she?).

Lansbury's work seemed much too subtle and controlled to stand out. I think if she wins, it would probably be on her name and a sympathy vote rather than the showy emoting that usually garners these things for guest stars.

Now, understand. It's not that I don't think she deserves an Emmy for her work. She gave a superb performance as a mother blind to her son's crimes. But this kind of quiet playing just doesn't often earn its just rewards.

DR Rodzinski, I have had AOL forever.  I really have no complaints with AOL, it has always done fine by me.

There was a time, several years back, when getting bumped off-line would occur now and then, but that is now a thing in the past..

AOL also recently gave members free McAfee Virus Scan software, which is really nice, along with another free software that locates and gets rid of adware and spyware.

Anyway, my AOL experience has been a positive one.

AOL looks nice.  I have kept it because I don't want to go through the horridness of having to change e-mail addresses.  That said, AOL is becoming completely inept re e-mail, routinely depositing important e-mails in the spam folder.  When I was booking singers for the NY signing, not ONE of them (all AOL users) got the e-mail I sent - they all had to retrieve it from their spam folders.

I'm watching Phantom of the Opera - if I finish in time for the notes I'll have a few things to say.

Good Evening!

All in all, a very good day.  A bit long, but good.  -DR TCB?  Calling, DR TCB!  ;)

I got the rest of my stuff out of my old apartment.  I put some more stuff into my storage unit, and I brought a bunch of things over to Steve's place. ;)

Tonight's show went very well.  My fingers got sloppy in one section - ??? - but the rest of the show went very well.  I'm looking forward to the weekend shows.  Richmond is just not a "go out on the weeknight" sort of town, so the past two nights of shows have been a little "quiet" so to speak.   -But, hey, at least we're out three minutes earlier!

After the show, I stopped by this vegetarian Chinese/Japanese place called PandaVeg.  It's been getting some great write ups here in town as well as in some regional papers, so... I just got their Vegetarian Crab Rangoon and their Hot & Sour Soup.  Both were very good.  I shall have to return for a proper lunch and/or dinner - it's right near the theatre, so it's convenient.

And now I'm reading and posting....

As for AOL...

Besides dealing with the usual "buggy" and "maintenance" periods, I've also have a very good experience with AOL overall.  Heck, all ISPs have their issues.

Since I travel a lot, AOL has been the easiest one for me to use wherever I end up.  Including international destinations.  Yes, most ISPs are web-based now, but you still need local access numbers and servers.

I did give MSN a try for a few months "simultaneously", but I don't like using Outlook - just makes it too easy to get e-mails, spam and viruses you don't really want.

STILL watching Phantom of the Opera.  I will only say that a) Joel Schumacher is a continuously lucky individual, b) they were lucky to have Vinnie Cirilli, and c) when one makes a casting decision that proves to be insurmountable and that casting decision happens to be one of the most famous roles in musical theater history, well, the film cannot succeed.

I'll have more to say in the notes.  I will say that I thought it started extremely well.
