Chili size is a burger covered in chili but no bun, just a big plate, usually with onions - I used to have it all the time, although never at Kentucky Boys.

That sounds good.  Recently, I've been getting chili hot dogs with no bun at the local Eagan's.

I had several dreams that were doozies. but at the moment I can only remember bits of the last one, which took place in the office of the last foundation for which I worked.  The foundation was failing, and a new office director was up to criminal activity.  One of my co-workers from the Packard Humanities Institute whom I've not seen in maybe 12-14 years made an appearance.

Well, today on my trip to the pharmacy, I had my first robber taxi driver.  He was very friendly and we had a nice conversation on the way.  When I tried to pay him, he told me the automated credit card device wasn't working and he needed my debit card.  I gave it to him and he entered the info.  He gave me a receipt for $9.70 without the usual info such as his taxi number, date, mileage, etc.

I kept asking him how he was going to enter the $3.00 tip, and he said not to worry about.
Title: Re: MEMORY
Post by: elmore3003 on February 17, 2021, 08:51:30 AM
So, I went into the pharmacy and picked up my meds.  The staff and I joked about how much he actually entered, and I said he was probably off to Florida by now on my debit card.  I told them that when I got home, I'd check my bank account online and see if I was charged $9.70 or something else.  Well, the bastard gave himself a $20.00 tip. $29.70 was charged to his cab.

I just got off the phone with my bank from filing a complaint.

THAT'S HORRIBLE.

Is the bank certain that he doesn't retain information that would enable him to do more harm? Is there any way in the world for them to cancel the $20.00 ripoff, or even the whole transaction?

Once again, some great sleuthing on BK's part.

I never knew Kentucky Boys, but I am so delighted to see CHILI SIZE on their signage. I'm glad TCB asked about it.

In all of my years away from Southern California, I had forgotten all about it. I don't think I've ever come across that anywhere but there. And it wasn't until a few years ago when I found some grabs of Hamburger Hamlet menus that I was reunited with it. The Hamlet is very likely where I had it most, but in my memory it was always delicious. It's just one of those wonderful L.A. things. And how great to see it advertised on the building like that.

There are so many places in my own youth that I wish I had photos of. What a great find.

DR George - thanks for the link to America's Test Kitchen. Such a wealth of information!  I have seen the show on television occasionally.

My pleasure!  I really enjoy the show, even just watching.  And one of the guys, Dan, is a real cutie! ;)

They did a live version in San Antonio back when Christopher whats-his-name was still with the show. It was fun. I ushered for and then bought their 50-pound cookbook.

I always found Christopher creepy.  Now he's on a cooking program called Milk Street.  Don't ask me why.

He's on Milk Street because he created that show after he was fired from America's Test Kitchen (if that rumor is correct).

No packages today, so have just been doing stuff here. There's something interesting in the ether but I've had this interesting thing in the ether at least eight times prior to this, so I'll just take it all with a grain of salt for now and until it's absolutely real.

So, when the power goes out, I read on my Kindle. I am almost finished with the Zola novel I started last night. I'm not enjoying it, because it features the nastiest child character I think I've ever come across in a novel. I have absolutely no sympathy with her. I also know she'll die as a punishment to her mother. And I'm actually cheering for her death to come quickly. She makes Nell from Olde Curiosity Shop seem less pathetic than she otherwise is.

Listening to Madama Butterfly - I love the von Karajan/Freni/Pavarotti version a lot, but his one, which I realized I had in the big John Barbirolli box, is its equal and is one of the few Barbirolli CDs that sounds pretty great - the others are all plagued with bad masters or bad engineering - I tried to listen his Otello and in the first bar of music there's so much distortion I couldn't really continue.

I went outside earlier today just to get out of the house. It was around 4 p.m. Traffic was pretty bad, which I later realized was because the main red light by the supermarket was out. Most of the businesses leading up to that were also dark, though one taqueria had a long drive-thru line. I don't know what they were cooking with or what power they were using. Maybe a higher one.

I decided against picking up a drive-thru dinner. It would probably have been too long a wait. So, I went to the H-E-B since I was at that intersection. The parking lot wasn't busy, but as I approached the door, I noticed that they had closed off all but two entrances/exits. Once inside the store, the power went out. Before the generator kicked in, I just stood there and waited. It was rather eerie.

I picked up a few things I needed and noticed that most of the store, except for produce, had been stripped bare. I managed to get some cheese I need for a soup I want to make this weekend, some salsa, a couple of bananas for the bird and some potato chips because I need a guilty pleasure. And I also got myself some flowers, because, well, I just needed those, too.

Checkout was a madhouse, with people just wanting to get through while the power was on and they could pay with a card.

Vixmom, I hope you find a new chiropractor you like.

I lucked out last year and found a good one when my medical group wouldn't allow us to see any of our doctors for FOUR months (!). But he wasn't cheap. My benefits changed this year, allowing far less acupuncture :(  but more chiropractic. I found someone who looks promising and booked an appointment for next week. Fortunately, there are lots of chiropractors near me who take my insurance (at least they're listed in the directory), so if I don't like her I can try someone else.

How annoying!

There was a time when using a debit card didn't give the protection of a credit card in situations like this. I don't know if that's still true. I hope you get your money back.

Well, I missed a vaccination opportunity today.  I'm on a list to be called if Kaiser has any left over vaccinations for the day and when they called, I was in rehearsal.  I picked up the phone, but I was told I had to be there in 20 minutes and there was not way.  Maybe if I had been prepared to run out the door, I would have made it.  Anyway, my name is still on the list and I've alerted both directors of both shows that if I get a call during rehearsal again, I am ending the Zoom meeting immediately and getting in my car.

Anyway, according to San Mateo County, they are opening up the next tier for teachers next week, so it may all work out.  Til then, business as usual!
