I LOVE that Dan/Julia skit from SNL!!

As for books, I love Stephen King's writing style.  His descriptions are a lot of fun to read...even when he's writing scary stuff and I really like both his novels and short stories.  I haven't much scary stuff by anyone other than Stephen King and it's been several years since I've read any of his stuff, at all.  I don't know why, but I just haven't.  Weird, huh? :-\

Favourite Scary books:  A series of six books by Michael MacDowell called BLACK WATER.  Set in Alabama, they comprise a long saga steeped in the Southern Gothic tradition.  Very creepy, done with great restraint and style.

Manly Wade Wellman wrote a series of short stories about a balladeer roaming through the Appalachian Mountains called John the Balladeer (or sometimes Silver John...because of the silver strings on his guitar) who encounters all sorts of supernatural occurences.  Great stuff!  There are several collections of Wellman and Silver John one called Who Fears the Devil? and The Several are in a collection of Worse Things Waiting.  In the late seventies or early eighties, he wrote several short novels about John as well.

I'm very fond of the stories by Seabury Quinn of Jules De Grandin, a French occult detective, and his Watson, Dr. Trowbridge, where they investigate supernatural doings.  They originally appeared in Weird Tales Magazine in the thirties and forties many were collected in a series of paperbacks from the seventies.  I believe all ninety stories have now been collected
in on volume (which I must get).

IMHO Mr Clive Barker has no peer as writer of imaginative horror stories. The Books of Blood are "terrific" and novels such as "Weaveworld" and "Imagica" are worthy of being regarded as classics.  Mr Barker as the gift of language as well as a gift for story telling.

Good morning, all!  Yesterday was quite a good work day, and I finished all the big work on Anna's act.  The remainder of the work now is filling in some trumpet on trombone on her other charts.  It will take most of the week and weekend to finish up.

Jim Goetz, an old friend of DRGinny's and mine is in town for business so I'll see him tonight for dinner, after I leave my GOLDEN APPLE work at Tams-Witmark.  I hope by tonight the bank account problem will be settled and I'll either have money in my account or know what happened to it.

TOD:  I used to read tons of story collections and, after Stephen King's DANCE MACABRE was published, tried to read all the books he recommended that I didn't know.  I'm appalled at my short memory these days that I cannot think of a single story by Robert Bloch or Ray Bradbury, both of whom terrified me in high school and college reading days.  The few things below obviously stuck because they still rattle me.
   Stories:  "Pigeons from Hell"
               "The Wendigo"
"Whistle and I'll come to You, My Lad"

Novels:  THE HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE
               THE OTHER
               HARVEST HOME
               THE SHINING
               'SALEM'S LOT
               DRACULA

Didn't get a chance to post yesterday (or much on Saturday). In response to Tom (ov Oz) from Saturday, I adore Noel Coward, both his music and plays. I did Hay Fever (far too many years ago) and have very fond memories of that production. My favorite lines were from Judith to her son, Simon (my role), something to the effect of Judith saying "Simon, you look so dirty, what have you been doing?" "Simon: Not washing very much"

Never read a Zane Grey book in my life (I'm not a big fan of Westerns).

Thanks much to Larry and Tom for making the trek from the Upper West Side to the Upper East Side to see Anthony's show. A grand time was had by all. On the 14th, in addition to Vimom and Company, Anthony's parents and one set of aunt/uncle will be there so it will again be a friendly audience.

I am now off to the Rockefeller Foundation (in printout form). I will listen to Donald's new Radio Show as I index.

This post brought to you by the new Millennium  ;) (of course that's all dependent on when you count the beginning of the new millennium, some say 2000 and some say 2001 and others say it doesn't matter)

Well, the missing deposit landed this morning!  I really thought it was lost forever, so it's quite a relief to know I'm not a victim of identity theft (who would want this identity? Really?) or some hacker.

DRGinny, I will indeed tell Jim hello.

If anyone in the New York vicinity is looking for a pleasnt, not expensive, evening out in Manhattan, I can do no more than to recommend Mr Anthony Morelli's music hall show "A Little of What You Fancy."  You'll have a good time.

Wishing you all a pleasant day, I'm off to the wilds of midtown.

Roal Dahl's short stories not really horror but still great writing.

Stephen King also published a collection of short stories he wrote called Night Shift. Some of them were really creepy!

I stopped reading King after The Stand, but I will say that I though that The Shining was his best up to that time and one of the best I ever read.

The Other by Tom Tyron was also a great read.

One of the scariest stories I ever read was by Stanley Ellin.  As soon as I think of the name of the story or the book, I'll let you know.  It is like a very good episode of "Twilight Zone" or "Alfred Hitchcock" in that it seems so real and so possible.  that's the scariest part, I think.

Stephen King's "Misery" drove me crazy.  Very well written.  I'd never read it again, but it's very good.

Speaking of Tom Tryon, one of the episodes in "Crowned Heads" (based loosely on Raymond Navarro mixed with a few other people) was certainly terrifying.  It sets up a mood that is very eerie and almost sufficating.

Scary books & stories......

Another vote for Tom Tryon's THE OTHER.

A vote for Ray Bradbury's SOMETHING WICKED THIS WAY COMES

A vote for Robert Louis Stevenson's DR JEKYLL & MR HYDE

A vote for Edgar Allan Poe's PIT AND THE PENDULUM

And a VERY big vote for the scariest story I ever read....it is a short story in Bradbury's collection DANDELION WINE about a group of older ladies who go out to a movie.....even though a strangler has been preying on women in the town....and the lady who lives the furthest from the center of town....has to walk to last of her way home.....through a ravine....by the powerhouse....in the dark....all by herself.....  She arrives home at last.....safely locking the door....except that.....

Another memory of Jack Salvatore's of working on COUNTERPLOT:

We didn't really have any pre-shoot rehearsal time, so the first time I met Allison is actually the first scene we're together in the film. It's a scene in which Connie Lane---the framed-for-murder hero's girlfriend---arrives in Puerto Rico, where she's heard he's hiding out from the police.

It takes place on a dock in San Juan harbor....and her costume is the one you see in that lobby card---suit with pillbox hat and light veil. Granted, I was only 12 years old or so, but a guy knows beautiful when he sees it...and that, she was. A stunner.

At my height, she seemed to be well, 50 feet tall (pun intended), and her obvious attributes were not to be denied, even under a fairly austerely tailored suit.  We worked the scene a few times together, and she was very sweet to me...not a diva, not a primadonna....just two working actors, one trying to bring the other, younger one, along.

There's a scene to which you allude...in which Connie is singing in a nightclub. Late in the movie, the two characters---Connie and Manuel, the kid---realize that while they've been at loggerheads over who loves Forrest Tucker more, they do both love him. While she's singing with the band, Manuel---who's just found out the hero's fled again and they've BOTH lost him--- charges up the aisle of the club to Connie and they embrace.

The script actually says something like "Connie presses Manuel to her bosom"...and I remember being a little worried about how that would go, because her wardrobe for the scene was a black velvet sheath with a daring decolletage. The crew--mostly young Puerto Rican guys---were teasing me mercilessly about being careful not to get too...uh...aroused by getting that up-close & personal.

I remember that we were getting ready to block the scene on set. Even Kurt Neumann, the director, had gotten on the teasing bandwagon, making sure I knew exactly what "business" the script called for. Allison was smiling through it all...and all I remember saying to her, before I ran up to her was: "Don't mess up my makeup."  Broke up the set...including Allison...she got it....and made sure to make all those crew guys as jealous as possible, by making sure the script was followed to the letter...and then some.

I saw Allison several times off set. She was staying at the Caribe Hilton, and I spent a lot of time swimming and dining there. I really had no idea of her career...nor she of mine...but she was always pleasant and nice to me...and treated me as a relative equal, within the limitations of my age.

DR VIXMOM thanks for the picture link.  What a lot of fun it looks like everyone is having!

I don't think I have ever seen a Peter Pan costume in quite that shade of green - but it is very imaginative!

The theater did not have the capability of rigging  the necessary equiptment, nor did they have adequate insurance  for the flying scenes, so it was done by having black background, black boxes and "lifters" dressed entirely in black, including hoods with veils, and lighting the stage  with black light.  The Darling children were dressed in whites, and very pale green. Peter's original costume dissappeared under the lighting so a new one was created a week before opening to glow under the lights

As for horror stories... Mainly Stephen King.  "Pet Sematary" and "Misery" come to mind first.

*I even belonged to the Stephen King Book Club for a while.  I eventually discontinued my membership since I wasn't able to keep up with all the reading - I also belonged to three other book clubs at the same time. In fact, I ended up giving away a bag of Stephen King (books) last week during my packing and sorting.

I used to teach some very suspenseful short stories to my ninth graders: "The Splinter" and "The Landlady" were always good for a shudder or two. Of course, the kids wanted more blood and guts, but I'd try to explain to them the concept that sometimes less is more, but they were too used to things like FRIDAY THE 13th to care.

I have a couple of books of Stephen King short stories that I've never opened, and once LA CAGE is out of the way, I'm determined to read some of them. I enjoyed THE SHINING and FIRESTARTER and THE DEAD ZONE very much. I am pretty certain I've got SKELETON CREW upstairs on one of the bookshelves.

I was fortunate enough to have read "Salem's Lot" before ever hearing about who Stephen King was.  I was in Naples, Italy, circa 1975-77. The paperback jacket wasn't really clear on what the story was about...and by the time I learned it was about a vampire (making other vampires!!) in a New England town, I was already well into the novel.  Gave me nightmares, too.

Next time I recognized King's name was when the movie "Carrie" was released.  I saw it in the Summer of 1977 in Naples and was then hooked on King.  Imagine my surprise upon returning to the U.S. that Stephen King was quite the rage.

Just before Christmas 1978 I was in Falls Creek VA shopping center bookstore and picked up something called "Interview With A Vampire."  I put it back down thinking it would not be worth my time.

Fourteen years later, I was playing catchup in the Lestat saga...along with Ann Rice's "witches" saga.  Ripe, terrific reading for my final tour of duty on an aircraft carrier.

I consider "The Stand" -- the expanded edition that came out -- what was it?? -- 10 or 15 years ago?? -- Stephen King's masterpiece.  The TV movie was pretty good in its own right, but the book is not really filmable the way "I" read it.

I love good horror -- but not when they start putting Part II, Part III and so on after the title.  If you can't get it right the first time, what's the point?

And then there's "The Exorcist."

Speaking of dreams

I dreamt the Vixmom Trio was traveling home from Canada via air and that just at the security checkpoint site  Mr. Vixmom decided to run off and answer a call of nature.    meanwhile the Vixter & I were forced by a security guard to go through the checkpoint.  I protested saying that we were waiting for my husband.  They told me loitering was not allowed and either go throught the checkpoint or be jailed. We went through and  moments later Mr. Vixmom appeared.  I, however, had his plane ticket, passport and green card in my handbag.  They wouldn't let him through, they wouldn't let me back and they wouldn't allow me to hand him the papers throught the metal detector or over the little rope separating us.  They told me I had to go further into the airport and send him the documents by mail.  Then I woke up....

Why were you smoking cigarettes last night, young man?  Don't you know they're extremely BAD for you?  And with today's economy, just think what you can do with the money you'd save by quitting.

(...channeling someone's mother, I guess....)

Well, I wasn't smoking, but almost everyone around me was, so...  And since most places in Richmond don't seem to believe in good air circulation systems...

Now the karaoke was a different thing...

Sandra good history vibes!

Vixmom where in England is Mr. Vixmom from?
I enjoyed the link, once I got past the blurry images.  Was the Vixter in any of those photos?

Steve was born and raised in Coventry,  made famous by Lady Godiva.  The town is ridden with statues and pictures of the aforementioned lady au natural on horseback.  Mr. Vixmom said it was a lovely environment for a young lad to grow up in.  Of course,Coventry is also know the famous three spires, the Coventry cathedrals (the one destroyed the blitz and the new 'un),  the 'silk weavers' that make beautiful pictures and bookmarks from silk, and it was ,until the 80's,   the "Detroit" of England, all the famous English autos  were made there.  It's a short drive from Stratford- upon- Avon.  His mum used to own a restaurant on the Royal Showground at Stoneleigh.  She ran agarden party for the Queen at Buckingham Palace one year, and hosted Prince Charles at her restaurant another year.  We have a picture of her with Charles but she never had her picture taken with the Queen as the exotic flowers in the Buckinham Palaces gardens brought on such a severe allergy attack  poor Mum ended up in an ambulance and missed the photo opportunity that head been promised tp her.

Mr. Vixmom  moved here in 1984 or 85....I met him in September of '86 because I heard his  voice on a friend's answering machine, fell for the accent and weedled an intro.  We were married October of '87

He does, but on widescreen, high-definition monitors and only with anamorphic video materials.

Meanwhile, I have my 17-inch Sony that I bought in 1994.

Gosh, that's probably COLOR, right? I wonder if I should get one of them....

Yes...it's color.  It's not "plasma", mind you...but the colors are still quite nice.

Sony makes very good TVs.  I'm fortunate it's lasted this long, since it gets plenty of use.

An old RCA that I just got rid of was purchased in 1979, and it still had a picture. A color tube inside must have burned out because all it could deliver were black and white pictures, but it still worked after all this time and being moved many times since 1979. Also, it was the original picture tube which got many hours of use before it was turned into a bedroom TV (which I almost never watch) for several years thereafter. Then, it became the guest room TV where it was hardly ever even turned on.

Though I have seen several of his movies and liked MISERY I have never read a Stephen King novel.  Horror stories really aren’t my cup of tea, however, I do read Dean Kuntz once in awhile.  My favorite is the first one I read SOLE SURVIVOR.  Possibly it was his least scary novel except it opens with a plane crash and I was on a plane.  ;D I enjoy reading thrillers when I travel.

I also read the master, Poe, when I was younger.

I think the first time I saw “Please Don’t Eat the Daisies” was in 1958 or ’59 at a drive-in theater.  My family would go to drive-ins frequently when two or three films played. I made my first acquaintance with some of the best movies I never saw all the way through on a big screen at “the drive-in.”  I usually managed to watch at least one film all the way through, but I usually fell asleep by the time the second movie started.

What I remember about PDETD was the screaming kids, the dog, the big old house, and the glamorous vamp trying to steal David Niven away from Doris Day.  I remember the two songs, too….the main title, and that staged number that still doesn’t make any sense to me, lyrically, but is fun to watch.  I’ve seen it on TV maybe twice in the past 25 years, and I’m sure I enjoyed it.

This weekend, I watched it on DVD.  It was nice having an old friend in front of me in its original aspect ratio (I assume), but some odd things were happening.  It became a rather ugly story of a man with an unchecked ego and a woman who constantly deferred/apologized to him.  When his ego consumed him, they would argue, and he would storm off/out, like the infant he truly was.  Even Spring Byington, as Doris’ mother, gives her some TERRIBLE advice about forgiving her husband and apologizing for something for which no apology should ever have been considered.

It’s a sad reflection of the 1950s, IMO, that such a sordid bit of male chauvinism and female subjugation masqueraded as grade A vehicle for Doris Day.  I think it’s unrepentantly ugly in tone, but it has winsome elements that make it fun, too.

It’s a well-made film with a shameful message…and Niven and Day delivered it with depressingly chipper sincerity.

LOL DR RON - my problem with the movie has always been Niven's character as the obnoxious silly A$$.

That one song "Any Way the Wind Blows" was a song published by Day & Melcher's publishing house, and Marty had tried to get Ross Hunter to change the name of PILLOW TALK to that song title so they could use it.  Hunter said "No...." and that's how that strange song ended up in PDETD.

Btw, I watched last night's DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES and I have a question.  They always seem to focus to much on the 4 main characters (lynnette, susan, gabrielle and bree). Yet they often seem to have completely separate stories.  I don't even think that any of them were in a scene together in last night's show.  And this happens often.

I really think that they should try to overlap some of their stories. Or have them in more scenes together.

I used to read every damn thing that Stephen King published, but it was getting to the point that it seemed like something new was coming off the assembly line every four months or so.  I think I stopped after Insomnia.

My favorite books of King's are"
The Stand -- literally gave me nightmares!
The Shining -- my intorduction to King.  Everyone was reading it during my first year of college.  We all went to the movie together and hated it.  My opinion has changed over the years, though.
Salem's Lot
Misery

I also like The Other and Harvest Home.  And I remember that I started reading Rosemary's Baby, but for some reason I didn't finish it.  I think it might have been that I had bought a used paperback copy that smelled badly.

Three lengths of string walk into a bar and sit at a table.  One of them gets up and goes to the bar to order drinks.  When he orders, the bartender sneers at him and says, "Sorry, bud--I don't serve lengths of string."  The string goes back to the table and tells his friends what happened.

"Let me try",  says one of the other lengths of string.  He goes to the bar but before he can say anything, the bartender roars, "Look, I told your friend already--I don't serve your kind here!"  The length of string goes back to the table and tells the other two that they won't be served.

The third length of string gets up and says, "Let me try something."  He goes into the bathroom and twists himself into a tangle and unfurls his ends a bit.  Then he walks over to the bar and quickly orders three beers.

The bartender narrows his eyes at the string and says, "Hey, wait a minute.  Aren't you one of those three pieces of string that came in here a few minutes ago?"

And the string replies, "Nope.  I'm a frayed knot."

I agree that it is very interesting how they each have their own stories.  But for me, I'd rather there was more overlapping.  Plus I love the scenes they are all in together.  I love the poker games, or the pool party Gabrielle had 2 weeks ago.  I do think it has been a very interesting choice to keep 4 storylines.  But I just find myself wanting to see them all together.

And I was curious if other viewers felt the same.

elmore, PIGEONS FROM HELL is a great horror story by Robert E. Howard, who wrote the Conan stories.

WENDIGO, I believe, is by Algernon Blackwood, who wrote many a classic horror story.

I have a friend in Lexington whose library is almost as big as mine and he collects mostly supernatural and horror fiction.  I get most of my recommendations for horror from him, he knows my penchant is for Victorian or early modern.  I've never read Stephen King.  I read Dean Koontz once when someone wanted me to adapt on of his books into a movie.  I ended up not taking the job.

On the question of the desperate housewives having a merged storyline, I think they all have their own problems and things to deal with, and as the season is drawing to a close, naturally each of their stories is going to spiral into its own resolutions (or cliffhanger) in preparation for Season 2.

Like DR Ron, I think the writers have played the season about as smart and canny as it would be possible to do, and I am forever grateful for that recap show two weeks ago that put so many of the mysteries into clearer focus so that last night's show made such complete sense.

Jane, I didn't dislike the book, but there were more compelling irons in the fire.  I actually went in to see the folks about it.  They owned another script of mine that they had never done.  The executive, who had been my executive on PSYCHO III, so desperately wanted me to do the job, she said she'd give me the other script back free and clear, if I did the job...It was tempting but I turned it down anyway...I can't remember what I might have been working on at the time.  But I think they also wanted to change (needlessly) elements of the novel that I actually quite liked.

In retrospect, I wish I had done it...just to have gotten my other script back. Still it seems well I didn't do it. The picture was later made called HIDEAWAY (also the title of the book).  I never saw it, but Maltin's book gives it no stars, only a BOMB designation and calls it "interminable" and says that Koontz wisely tried to have his name taken off the film.

Meanwhile,  her Spanish teacher still hasn't graded the doll she had to sew in traditional Nicaraguan dress, or to grade the report that went with it (It  has been at least a month since that was handed in).   The Vixter enquired about it and the teacher said that she was busy, that she had a life outside of school and that she would get to it when she had a chance......I wonder how that response would fly  if the Vixter hadn't turned her project in on time.....these teachers!!!

DRCharlesPogue, I have seen one promo for HERCULES; it was on Friday night just before or during the early part of LAW & ORDER: TRIAL BY JURY.

Yes, Alegernon Blackwood wrote THE WENDIGO, which still terrifies me, and I could not remember the author of PIGEONS FROM HELL this morning.  I'm also fond of Sheridan LeFanu's work, although I couldn't think of a single story this morning, the same with E.T.A. Hoffmann's stories.

While I love SOMETHING WICKED THIS WAY COMES, I never found it frightening, but I'd forgotten Bradbury's great story about the ravine, and he also wrote a macabre story about Halloween called "October Game" or something like that.

One aspect of my teaching career I am very, very proud of: my students got the grade for every test, every paper, every project the next day after it was done. As far as I was concerned, that was part of my job: to give them feedback as soon as possible on their work so that they knew where they stood.

Elmore do the school kids always ride free?  When I rode the bus to Portland we also had a crazy lady.  The poor young man sitting next to me was ready to kill her.  He had been sitting behind her since California and was on his way home to see his orthopedist after seriously injuring his knee.

DR WFO, what are these pictures from?  I feel like I should know and I just cannot remember

It's called THE RUSSIAN SEASONS DANCE COMPANY (http://www.hsvwoodlands.com/russian_seasons.htm)

I dunno.  I just Googled "Dance two" for page 2, and that turned up.  Maybe I should have tried "Dance 10, Looks 3"

But then I would have got this:

One aspect of my teaching career I am very, very proud of: my students got the grade for every test, every paper, every project the next day after it was done. As far as I was concerned, that was part of my job: to give them feedback as soon as possible on their work so that they knew where they stood.

I must say, however, that most of my colleagues did not agree with this and did not give back tests and papers in a timely manner. My students complained to me about other teachers loud and often.

I think that is very commendable,  Matt.

Now, I understand each teacher has 6 or 7 classes of 20 - 25 kids, a few days or even a week  to grade reports or papers or projects is understandable, but over a month and then to tell the kids that she has a life outside of school? Like the kids don't?! GGRRRRRR

My question for the Pogue:  Who initiated the project?  Did you have the idea and sell it to the network, or were you taken on to write a mini-series that was already in the planning stages?

And, second question, will your close personal friend Edward Sorbo be offended?

The situation in Manhattan has become unbearable:  the buses in the morning, and around 3 pm, are filled with noisy, rude, obnoxious terrors, most of whom should be made into rugs, and their selfish parents or nannies who ignore the infirm, elderly, tired or paying customers to let their charges run rampant, scream, yell, behave unseemly while they talk to each other or their cell phones.  I long for the days of discipline.

Good Afternoon!

Chris and I met for lunch at Can-Can.  He had their "tartine" (open-faced sandwich) of Asparagus, Jambon de Bayonne and Raclette.  I had their "salade" of Chicken Liver Mousse, Frisee and Caramelized Shallots.  Both of us enjoyed our lunches immensely.  Chris also ordered a Bellini which was properly made with a puree of White Peaches.  -I had a sip - quite good too.  And I have to say the Chicken Liver Mousse was wonderful - very well-prepared and perfectly seasoned.  And rich!

Afterwards, we headed up to For the Love of Chocolate.  I stocked up on English Cadbury and Nestle - including a Yorkie Bar - "It's Not For Girls", and Chris selected a mix of custom M&Ms from the "Color Bar" in his Red Sox colors.  ;)  We then headed over to Rostov's Coffee and Tea - Chris needed a little caffeine jolt before he started his drive down to Greensboro.

And it was also just nice spending time with Chris and getting to know him better.  Just listening to him warm up in the pit has been a pleasure over the past couple of weeks.  Great jazz player, and a wonderful musical sense of humor.  He's going to Scotland for a week during his lay-off, as well as spending a few days in New York City with his girlfriend.  It's nice to know he has some 'excitement' planned for his lay-off since I'm sort of taking his job away for a couple of weeks.  I guess it all evens out in some way.

As for Lums...

I remember them around Arlington, VA, while growing up.  They always seemed to be promoting their hot dogs which were boiled in beer.  There was also one in Richmond right near VCU's campus when I started school there back in 1987.  From what I could tell, it was a Lums in name only - seemed to become a place for some unseemly folks to indulge in their cheap beer fixations.

I know I ate at one before, but it was a long time ago.

As for OllieBurger... There's is a place in DC near Ford's Theatre that still serves the OllieBurger - I think the whole "Ollie's Trolley" franchise was related/spinoff - same menu items, same color scheme.  They also have very good french fries.

WFO, I actually had started my HERCULES with Fox TV, but the exec at Fox was having a hard time trying to set it up.  We then heard NBC and Hallmark were planning to do one, my exec at Fox...an old friend who had been my exec on THE FLY years ago...said, "It's your idea, I can't set it up, go with God, my son"...or words to that effect.  We sent my treatment of HERCULES to them, which was very detailed and had the whole thing worked out.  They hired me and I wrote from my treatment (with their notes on it, of course.)  The whole script development was actually quite lovely and both my execs at NBC and Hallmark were great and very protective of the script.  Of course, we will now see what reducing a 4-hour mini to 3-hours does for the sake of demographics and scheduling strategies.

Hi all!  I had a little problem and had to go to the doctors office today.  She sent me home to rest and take some meds.  I should be back at work tomorrow.

I rested most of the afternoon away but feel better for it .  I’m just very mad to be put on the kind of meds that one has to take for the rest of one’s life.  I don’t like taking pills in the first place.  Two, the cost of these things is outrageous.

I’m so glad that everything is ok with your money, DR Elmore.  You know that half the time I just assume (I know I should never do that but I do) that my money is there and never even bother to check before I start spending it.

Scary books?  I would have to agree about The Stand—at least the part about the flu.  I was very nervous around people who sneezed for weeks after.

Alas Babylon by Pat Frank was one I read in my high school days.  It’s another end of the world/nuclear holocaust type book that was set right here in Florida (Before Disney).  It was set up around Kissimmee so it was hard to read about the mushroom cloud that was Tampa/MacDill AFB.

I shook every time a plane went overhead for at least a month afterwards.

I also read the Ann Rice witch books.  Eh, not so scary.  In fact, I bought Taltos off the net a few weeks/months ago and have yet to pick it up to read.

Awww, bus rides.  Elmore and I will get together and each write a book about our experiences.  Mine shall be called:  Hartline:  It’s not just a bus ride, it’s an adventure.
I also meant to say that I wish I room in my fridge for the flowers but alas, there would be no way.  Having no AC, some of them are already wilting.

I'm looking forward to Hercules.  I only wish I had way to record it but there will be a DVD?

Thanks for the vibes, everybody. They seemed to do the trick. I had more trouble actually getting to school than taking the test. I forgot that the bus line I take to school changes at 11, so I had to run half a mile to catch the next line. I missed that one and had to wait fifteen minutes for the next bus. So I was waiting at the bus stop, and the guy waiting there with me got out a pad of paper, some watercolors, and a brush and started painting a picture of the empty lot across the street that used to be the mall. Why not?

I was only about ten minutes late for the test, so it wasn't the end of the world. Luckily, none of that history I had crammed in my head fell out while I was running after various and sundried buses. The test took up an entire blue book, minus one page, which I used to write a P.S. to my teacher. And I did manage to use the word "unseemly" in one of my essays.

Congratulations to the Vixter on her recycling video! I once had a teacher lose one of my projects at a bowling alley. I'm not quite sure what happened there.

My very favorite scary book is GHOST STORY by Peter Straub.  In fact, I think I enjoyed the film version with Fred Astaire more than most people did, becuase I could visualize the book in my head as I was watching it.

Both THE STAND and IT rank as not only among my favorite scary books, but also among my favorite books of all time.

True bus story:

A older lady was riding the bus home from the store.  The bus driver hit the brakes and something from the ladys bag falls out and slides to the front of the bus.

"My Aspirins, My Aspirins!",  She cried.

Without missing a beat, the bus driver said, "Lady, if your A** Burns, stick it out the window!"

Of course, you have to understand how we Southerners pronounce Aspirin to get the joke.   ;)  :D

I'm back from a very long day of mixing.  Vinnie's premixes were all very good to begin with, but we spent quite a bit of time tweaking each of them.  One of the tracks was just not working for me in terms of its layers, and I ended up really simplifying it - we now may add a cello to it, just for some nice warm low end.  Otherwise, everything is sounding quite good.  It always takes me a few hours to get back into the vibe of mixing when I've been away from it for these long stretches.  My ears have to become accustomed to hearing the details again.  It took about two hours today before I was really hearing as I like to.  We got eight songs finished today.  Tomorrow, Vinnie will be pre-mixing the other seven, then Wednesday we'll go through this whole thing again, and I'll do any fixes on what we did today, should I hear something I don't like.  The vocals comped very well and so far Mr. Haines hasn't had to come in to resing any notes yet, which is a good thing.

I caught a bit of Robert Montgomery's RIDE THE PINK HORSE tonight. Pretty interesting film, if not a little odd and atmospheric. I have never caught the whole thing to figure out whether the doggone thing makes sense or not.

It is funny to read the IMDB reviews that it is an "imitation film noir" or "almost a noir" or it would have been film noir if it had only done such and such, AS IF the filmmakers of the time knew this term and its "rules" and were aiming at such a classification.

So many people are lost without their labels!

I noticed a few weeks ago that I don't watch any shows on CBS.  Funny, huh?  But speaking of "Law and Order," I've been watching "L&O:  Trial By Jury" because of Bebe Neuworth and last Friday was the season finale.  I totally forgot to watch (or even tape) it! :'( Did anyone happen to tape it and would anyone who happened to tape it be able to send me a copy??  I'd be more than willing to pay for shipping or to trade something.  I mean, I can wait for the repeat this summer, but I'll probably forget about it by then.  Any help would be appreciated. ;D

I'm sorry, DR George. I watched it "live" and recorded NUMBERS instead. That has been pretty much my routine since both shows started facing off against one another.

Wish I could have been some help.

I also send best thoughts and lots of crossed fingers and toes for DR Jed to get the job he wants. I have one friend still actively searching for a job around here, and another friend who has a job in Virginia but is trying to relocate here but much find work before he does so.

When I got home from rehearsal tonight, I cracked open the MURDER SHE WROTE boxed set of Season 1 episodes, and put in the one that first introduced the late Jerry Orbach as detective Harry McGraw. Excellent episode, and they look very, very good for a 20 year old series with a sharp picture, nice color saturation, and clear, crisp mono sound.

Can it really be 20 years ago that these shows were first broadcast! Lordy, how time flies! :-\

The reason I asked whether anyone had seen any ads is because I don't watch any of the three major networks at all and almost no Fox (sometimes The Simpsons and Malcolm).  Most of my viewing these days is confined to cable. TCM first and foremost, follwed by Fox Movie Channel,  HGTV, BBCAmerica, Comedy Channel, and Food network.

Rodzinski, I think RIDE THE PINK HORSE is a very interesting movie, though I haven't seen it in sometime.

Good Evening!

Greetings from Fairfax!  I started packing my car up starting around 8:30, and finished right after 9:00.  I didn't realized just how much stuff I had set aside to bring home this trip.  But it all fit into the car, and I really didn't have to resort to any creative organizing.

The drive up was relatively uneventful save for some road construction at Fredericksburg - which only ended up delaying me about 10 minutes.  Not bad at all.  Once I got up here around 11:15, I unloaded everything - it's all sitting in the big room in the basement.  I'll sort and separate - and do laundry(!) - in the morning.

And, now watching Letterman, and having a very late dinner...  So...

Laters...

I saw Ride the Pink Horse about six months ago - I'd never seen it before.  It has really interesting components.  I especially liked Wanda Hendrix (is that her name).  And, if I remember correctly, the always excellent (and large) Thomas Gomez.

No posts in ninety minutes.  And yet I saw five count them five dear readers.  I swear, some of this WUSSBURGERING is infuriatingly infuriating.

Here is a photograph of Vinnie and his ever-lovin' Stefanie, who is an ace cellist.

Well, if this doesn't take the cake - two-and-a-half hours without a single post save for mine own.  Skammen, I say, and skammen I say again.  I do understand we had a lovely number of posts, but I don't understand this WUSSBURGERING as of nine-thirty.  Oh, well, what can one do but scratch one's head.

I have been watching TV all night.  Sorry.  Right now, I'm listening to the brand new Lucky Stiff CD with Malcolm Gets and I enjoy hearing slightly different interpretations.  It has a bit more dialogue than the original.  One like that's pretty damn funny is a line from Miss Glick (reminds me of "Miss Dorothy"):  "Just because we slept together does not mean that we’re on a first name basis!"

And it has a bonus track called "Shoes" for Harry.  He sings about shoes.

It's very much a part of the score.  It's a very nice song...even if it was cut from the show.
