Well, you've read the notes, you know what a strange day was yesterday, you are now curious whether today will be a strange day, and now it is time for you to post until the strange cows come home, which certainly won't be yesterday. Have I been obtuse enough?
-
And the word of the day is: ERADICATE!
-
Didn't Cole Porter write Kiss Me Eradicate?
-
CDs: Anthony Newley "What Kind Of Fool Am I" 1994
Anthony Newley "Pure imagination"/"Ain't It Funny"

Happy Birthday to La Femme Jolie!

DR JOSE - thanks for the additional Indy Pic! You will be happy to know that I have lost about 12 pounds on my diet and although I will never be as thin as DRJOEY, at least DR RICHARD won't have to use the wide angle lens next time I am in the photo!
Elvis! Loved the additional photos as well.
And DRJANE reminded me of another historical novel: NICHOLAS & ALEXANDRA.

DVD: I LOVE LUCY - the 4th Season

VCR: THE COLOSSUS OF RHODES again. Don't forget that you have this movie, DR BK...or did you watch it? I am trying to recall your comments.
THE RAZOR'S EDGE - a wonderfully cast movie, though it is not a patch on the book, which is one of my favorites of all time. The first scene at the party where Tyrone Power tries to explain to Gene Tierney how being in the war has changed him, is beautifully scored and photographed. Clifton Webb, Lucile Watson, and Herbert Marshall are wonderful, as are John Payne and Anne Baxter.
Of course, the scene when Ty announces his engagement to Anne and Gene throws down the phone, and the scene when she insults Marshall and throws sandwiches at him, and the scene when she finally admits to Power how she manipulated Baxter..... A long, long film that I truly enjoy.
-
Oh...I am glad TRE is coming to DVD - I hope Silvia Stoddard is NOT one of the people on the commentary.

Good morning, all! I will be E&T most of the day; Rodgers & Hammerstein are summoning me to finish up SHOWBOAT, and I'm seeing a movie tonight with Matthew, my best friend from college.
Dear Friend BK, let me know the dates, etc. you will be in NYC, and I will make the reservation for Joe Allen on Saturday night.
I'm listening to Jerome Kern as I write this, but I have nothing lined up this weekend: too much to do before Monday madness!

Good Morning!
Yes, believe it or not, I'm actually up before Noon. Before 10:30. Before 9:00. Before 8:00!?!?!?
How did that happen? Well, I guess since I Wussburgered out before midnight EDT... That's how. Which is good, since I have to run some errands this morning here in Richmond, and I hope to get on the road back up to Fairfax before noon.
In any case...
-
BK - What are the dates for your NYC sojourn this time around? Depending upon my subbing schedule for Mamma Mia!...

Friday Media Check...
Is it really Friday again already?
:-\
I did try to listen to some CDs earlier this week at my parents' house, but the wall outlet that I usually plug my mini-boom box into seems to have gone kaput. So... No electricity, no music. But I have been catching up on my soap operas, so all is not lost.
;)
-
...And, yes, there are other wall outlets I could plug my mini-boom box into, but with the way the room is configured, and where the major pieces of furniture are placed, getting to some of those other outlets is a bit inconvenient.
-
OOoohhh....
That's right....
It's...

I've had a most interesting morning already.
A friend of mine gave me the titles of some STAR TREK (original series) episodes which I had and hadn't watched but which he thought I should see. #1 on his list for me to watch was "Who Mourns for Adonis?" so this morning, before I did anything else, I put it on.
He recommended it because he knew I'd like the beefcake that is Michael Forest playing the god Apollo in the episode, but lo and behold, there was Miss Leslie Parrish playing the object of his lust. I had NO IDEA she was in this episode, so you can imagine how surprised I was when she showed up (James Doohan's Scotty also had the hots for Ms. Parrish.)
It was a very enjoyable episode. Glad I took time out from my usual morning schedule to watch it.

Same episode was on Sci-Fi Channel this morning.
The story is that Ms. Parrish's costume, which included a swath of sheer fabric covering her...uh...covering her lovely front, was held on in front by the power of gravity. They were planning to tape it securely, but she had no need for the tape.

Ya, well, you should see him in VIKING WOMEN AND THE SEA SERPENT or BEAST FROM HAUNTED CAVE! LOL!
By the way, Forest was in a somewhat Gay themed movie called DEATHWATCH back in the 60s which he is very proud of....although said film is hard to come by.

White House looks at why Bush not told of alert sooner
President didn't know for almost an hour that plane was in no-fly zone
By STEWART M. POWELL
"The president was never considered to be in any danger, and protocols that were put in place after Sept. 11 were followed."
-- Scott McClellan, White House press secretary
WASHINGTON - The White House launched an investigation Thursday into the 47-minute delay in notifying President Bush about the intrusion of a single-engine aircraft into restricted airspace over the nation's capital that provoked emergency evacuations.
The violation of the no-fly zone Wednesday led more than 30,000 people to quickly leave the White House complex, the Capitol and the Supreme Court and triggered an eight-minute "red alert" at the White House.
At the time, Bush was riding a bicycle at a wildlife center in suburban Maryland and wasn't told of the alert until after he had completed his ride at 12:50 p.m., 47 minutes after the "red alert" was issued and 36 minutes after an all-clear.
Vice President Dick Cheney, first lady Laura Bush and visiting former first lady Nancy Reagan were among those evacuated from the White House complex during the alert.
White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan said Thursday that White House Deputy Chief of Staff Joe Hagin and the U.S. Secret Service would review Wednesday's aircraft incident, the response and the failure to notify the commander in chief during his bike ride.
McClellan said Secret Service agents accompanying Bush to the Patuxent Wildlife Research Center in Beltsville, Md., and the uniformed military aide who accompanies the president with the nuclear warfare launch codes were in touch with authorities at the White House during the scare.
The alert was triggered when a Cessna airplane flying from Pennsylvania to North Carolina penetrated the no-fly zone around the nation's capital where small aircraft have been barred since the Sept. 11 attacks.
But McClellan said none of the staffers interrupted the president's bike ride to notify him that the White House had been put on the nation's highest level of threat alert.
"Any time there is a situation like this, there is going to be a review undertaken," McClellan said. "It will be thoroughly reviewed, and if there are any improvements that need to be made, they will be made."
Seventy minutes elapsed between when Federal Aviation Administration radar began tracking the unidentified plane at 11:28 a.m. Wednesday and the time that the incident ended.
McClellan defended Secret Service agents' decision not to advise the president.
"The president was never considered to be in any danger, and protocols that were put in place after Sept. 11 were followed," he said.
The episode recalled a controversial delay Sept. 11, 2001, when Bush remained in a Florida elementary-school classroom for seven minutes after being told by White House Chief of Staff Andrew Card that a second airliner had crashed into the World Trade Center.
From the same paper SWW linked to :
This looks great to the rest of the world, 9/11 he's reading a story book, this time he's out riding his bike.. can't they just say he was out of the White House studying the environment, or promoting physical fitness

Forgive me for being E & T the past few days, but I have been down with a case of the stomach flu (I guess). At least, that was what the doctor's office said I probably have / had, as they determined by phone line only. It seems a bit late in the season for the flu, but the only other option was morning sickness, so I opted for the flu. I am feeling a little better this morning, but a little weaker from the experience.
Sorry to read that the late night activities have slowed considerably here at HHW. I guess SWW and I will have to take part of the blame, since we were in bed – separately.

Yesterday (late last night), BK wrote
So, let me get this straight - both George and Jed were here. I reopened the room for them and then they read and LEFT without POSTING???
In my defense (slim as it may be), I logged on and it was all locked up. You did not indicate that if people showed up that you would re-open. I could only assume that it was a done deal and had no clew that you would open it again. So, wanting to get to work early again today (which I did, 7:15 a.m.!), I went to bed. Now I'm here, posting my explanation. Let me also say:
A Very Happy Birthday to La Jolie Femme, otherwise known as Pogue’s ever-lovin’ Julieanne!
And in my CD player: Miss Gulch Returns: The Wicked Musical. This is actually a cabaret act written and performed by Fred Barton, accompanist to the early Forbidden Broadway series. I just got it yesterday and have listened to it. It's quite funny! After that will be the 2-CD special edition soundtrack to "Mary Poppins."

Happy birthday, Dear Reader La Jolie Femme, also known as Dear Reader Pogue's ever-loving Julieanne!!
I am very sorry for being errant and truant yesterday, BK, but I was attending to some VERY important business: the post-semester coma. I had worked myself stupid on that IAAAAWWOTD paper and just needed to crash on my futon and not move for a day or so.

Got it...them. ;D THANK YOU!! :-*

Congratulations to the Vixter on her almost-perfect score!
I woke up at some point yesterday and my brother and I went to the grocery store. Grocery shopping with him is a lot of fun. We never get a cart or a basket, and his rule is "Whatever you can carry, you can have." By the time we got to the check-out counter, I was carrying my own weight in Krispy Kreme doughnuts and Sara Lee cheesecake. I am now having a nice healthy breakfast of two Krispy Kremes and a Cherry Coke.
-
Ah yes...I forgot congratulations yesterday to the Vixter for her nearly perfect score!
-
Ahh, isn't the summer great? No school, no ridiculous papers about stuff I don't understand, and best of all, no more IAAAAWWOTD. In fact, I will never even have to type out those letters ever again. IAAAAWWOTD. There, that was the last time I am ever going to type out those letters.
I think that calls for a swig of this here Cherry Coke.
In other news, some of my grades have come in, and I see that I got an A in my Rhetorics class, and I still don't know what rhetoric is.
And I still don't know why my History teacher has all those groupies. She certainly is NOT an easy grader, believe you me. No funny little quirks like Ms. Hee-uh. What gives?
-
My parents should have arrived at my grandmother's place in Indiana yesterday. I wonder what they had with their Jello for dinner last night.

Congratulations to the Vixter on her almost-perfect score!
and on her behalf, I thank you

Well.....elsewhere on the internet, Mr Matthew Morrison who is nominated for a Tony Award for "Light In the Piazza" has been spoken of as John Wayne's grandson. Can anyone at HHW tell me if this is true?

History itself isn't boring (all those beheadings and whatnot), it's just that you average History teacher has the ability to make it boring. Not all History teachers, of course. Maybe it's just MY History teachers.
Vixmom, you weren't part of our group when I took a couple History classes from Ms. Hee-uh. She added the word "here" to the end of each sentence, and with her Australian accent, it came out "hee-uh."
"And in 1789, the Bastille was stormed, hee-uh. This marked the beginning of the French Revolution, hee-uh. Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette would later be beheaded, hee-uh."
I actually looked forward to this class so that I could count the number of hee-uhs in each lecture. And then the next semester, I took another class with her voluntarily for the same reason.

Perhaps food poisoning? I am glad you feeling better.
That will teach me to eat my own cooking!

NOTICE! I WILL NOT BE POSTING AT ALL FOR THE LAST TWO WEEKS OF JULY!!!!
We are not sure about the girl scout camp yet because there is going to be a "Kids' revue" at the same theatre group wher she justed finished Peter Pan and she wants to tryout for that. Depending on whether she gets it and reheasal and show dates will determine if she'll go to camp.

I'm up, I'm up. Had an excellent beauty sleep, with no birds singing their little hearts out.
Sandra: I think you will find ancient Greece very interesting. I once took a class in Ancient Grease - fascinating. Many topics of fascination - what sort of grease they used for their marvelous chariots, what sort of grease they used to cook their collective geese, etc.
Ancient Grease - that's the title of my next novel. Well, I must shave and shower for my noon lunch/meeting.

Someone just knocked on my door. I asked who it was - they said "Jason" and he was wearing a hockey mask, so I didn't let him in.

I know Dear Reader Jose asked a while back about my F. Scott Fitzgerald sentences. I’d have to get up to see what they were exactly, but here they are as best as I can remember them:
“The obvious example is the works of F. Scott Fitzgerald.” I was talking about how some books are reflections of the time periods in which they were written.
“It’s not that there’s anything wrong with F. Scott Fitzgerald, it’s just that his books are not exactly what I would call rollicking.” That was during one of my many tangents in my Rhetoric paper while I tried to fill up seven pages while still avoiding the question because I didn’t know what rhetoric was and I wasn’t even sure what the question was asking me. The book I was writing about had a review calling it “rollicking” and I took that and ran with it. That whole paper was actually one giant tangent. I got a B on it, by the way.
“It sounds more like the name of a short story by F. Scott Fitzgerald about how the Jazz Age changed American mentality than a History book about Stuart England.” That was for my History paper in which I was supposed to compare and contrast these two books we read about Stuart England. I got an A and I didn’t even read the books.
I had trouble getting F. Scott Fitzgerald into my IAAAAWWOTD paper (Oh, I typed it again! Another swig of Cherry Coke!), so it doesn’t flow as well as I would have liked. “Like F. Scott Fitzgerald defining the Jazz Age, R**** sums up the such-and-such (the condition of postcoloniality? I don’t remember) like this.” And there followed a quote from the book my teacher wrote. Her name is asterisked out just in case she Googles herself. The real beauty about this sentence is that a) I got to compare my teacher- an African-American feminist- to F. Scott Fitzgerald. How often do you get to do that? and b) I got to avoid the question I didn’t even understand by quoting my teacher, and she really can’t tell me it’s wrong, can she?
Unfortunately, I decided to put F. Scott Fitzgerald into all my papers after I’d already turned in my Musical Theater paper. Ironically, the play I wrote my paper on takes place in the ‘20s or ‘30s or something, so it would have been a cinch to stick him in there.

Did anybody here watch last night's APPRENTICE?
I really think based on last night's show Kendra has to have won (which is who i want to win).
I really liked tana before (and still sort of do). But her behavior last night was rude (to her team and to the governor's assistant).
I am so happy a woman will win!
I thought that they showed the rude side of Tana...and only the rude side. They didn't show anything that was good about her project. If the producers are setting up the finale to be a big upset, I don't think that that would be a good thing. Kendra was so gracious and thankful for her team. For the first time, it looked like the former contestants really helped make a final project come together...and the project manager really could thank them for it.

Oh, and by the bye (btb in Internet Lingo), the title is not "Who Mourns for Adnonis", but rather "Who Mourns for Adonais". It is taken from a poem by Shelley.

-
The entire poem is somewhat lengthy (Shelley was never one for a quick sound bite), and can be found here. (http://www.photoaspects.com/chesil/shelley/adonais.html)
It begins:
I.
I weep for Adonais - he is dead!
O, weep for Adonais! though our tears
Thaw not the frost which binds so dear a head!
And thou, sad Hour, selected from all years
To mourn our loss, rouse thy obscure compeers,
And teach them thine own sorrow, say: "With me
Died Adonais; till the Future dares
Forget the Past, his fate and fame shall be
An echo and a light unto eternity!"
and goes on at turgid and melancholy length until:
LV.
The breath whose might I have invoked in song
Descends on me; my spirit's bark is driven
Far from the shore, far from the trembling throng
Whose sails were never to the tempest given;
The massy earth and sphered skies are riven!
I am borne darkly, fearfully, afar;
Whilst, burning through the inmost veil of Heaven,
The soul of Adonais, like a star,
Beacons from the abode where the Eternal are.
But not once does Shelley mention F. Scott Fitzgerald.
See that man with hair like Shelley's?
-
Not to forget the most important stanza:
XLVII.
Who mourns for Adonais? Oh, come forth,
Fond wretch! and know thyself and him aright.
Clasp with thy panting soul the pendulous Earth;
As from a centre, dart thy spirit's light
Beyond all worlds, until its spacious might
Satiate the void circumference: then shrink
Even to a point within our day and night;
And keep thy heart light lest it make thee sink
When hope has kindled hope, and lured thee to the brink.
I believe it was written upon the death of Byron. In any case, there is not likely to be a series of movies as successful as those based upon the works of Shelley's wife.

And here is Leslie, back in uniform.

I love The New Christy Minstrels.
And you know of course, DRRODZINSKI that it's director Randy Sparks can be seen acting the fool and singing in COLLEGE CONFIDENTIAL.
He has also been married for over 40 years to the luscious Diane Jergens who had a brief film career herself.
-
Hey Rodzinski, the New Christy Minstrels are great...I keep meaning to pick up one of there CDs, but for some reason I never do!
Coincidently, the leader of the New Christy Minstrels is Randy Sparks, husband to 1950s teen actress Diane Jergens who starred in HIGH SCHOOL CONFIDENTIAL and ISLAND OF LOST WOMEN...I wrote to her just recently in regards to doing an interview...but alas she has neglected to get in contact with me...presuming the letter actually reached her.

Philadelphia Composers: Edwin Pearce Christy (1815-1862)
Edwin Pearce Christy, minstrel manager and performer, was born in Philadelphia. He began his career as a minstrel in Buffalo and toured upstate New York from 1843 to 1845. The group took the name of its founder and became known as the Christy's Minstrels. In April 1846 Christy and his band of six performers began performing in New York City at Palmo's Opera House. The group performed at Mechanics Hall from February 15, 1847 to July 15, 1854. After performing at a benefit performance for Stephen Foster in Cincinnati on August 25, 1847 the group specialized in performances of Foster's works. Foster sold his song, Old Folks at Home, to Christy for his exclusive use.
Christy retired as a performer in 1855 but continued as a manager. He operated a chain of theaters called Christy's Opera Houses in several cities. The name of the original group, Christy's Minstrels, was licensed for use by a new organization and became synonymous with the performance tradition of blackface minstrelsy. Fearful of financial reverses due to the upheaval of the Civil War, Christy committed suicide in New York on May 21, 1862.

Edwin Christy (composer of "Goodnight, Ladies") formed his Christy Minstrels in the 1840's as a group who traveled the country and performed in blackface. Songwriter formed The NEW Christy Minstrels in 1961 primarily as a vehicle for his own songs. There was dissension in the ranks once they signed with Columbia Records. "Green Green" their first hit featured a solo by Barry McGuire.
Many recording artists started with the Minstrels and its farm club The Back Porch Majority.

:D I, too, have been a fan of the New Christy Minstrels since seeing them perform at the Michigan State Fair (ahem) some 40 years ago. In addition to Rodzinski's album choices, I'd add their Merry Christmas (but NOT the sequel :P)
Now when, oh when, will the movie Advance to the Rear be released on DVD?

Did someone say Peter Brown?
And least someone make a mistake, the Peter Brown Fan Site tells us
You may wanna get funky with him, but he's not the Peter Brown who wrote the song
"Do Ya Wanna Get Funky With Me?"
He's not Peter Brown, the Beatles former manager, who co-authored a biography and who's name is mentioned in The Ballad of John & Yoko
Nor is he the Peter Brown known as host of the One-on-One sports radio show.
And not the Peter Brown who, as Princess Di's bodyguard, caused a scandal by leaving his family after an affair with one of Di's female retinue but who redeemed himself by later saving Prince Charles from angry Cypriots.
Finally, he's not the Canadian actor whose credit for a tiny part in an episode of Babylon 5 mistakenly ended up on Peter's IMDb credits list.

My sister and I love that album. Our parents have had the NCM's "The Wandering Minstrels" album for years, but it's actually the only album of their's that I've ever heard. I even bought my own copy from eBay about three years ago...I MUST put that on CD!

Sometimes, the New Christy Minstrels get put down as a little vanilla. But their first 5-6 LPs are a rollicking good time. Once they started doing contemporary pop tunes on LP, things didn't go too well.
But what had happened was that Sparks, who owned the NEW concept, sold it to a couple friends who basically wanted to maximize profits and run the group as a touring machine, no more creativity or original songs, less time spent on the LPs, revolving door of members who did not gel as well. And the longtime members who stuck it out saw none of the profits. Unique voices like Barry McGuire went solo. By the late 60s, the Christies were still singing like it was still the early 60s which unfairly colors their reputation to this day.
MBarnum, there is a fine 2-disk collection on Collectibles which covers a lot of the great tunes from the NCM's best years and has excellent liner notes. The individual LPs are also available usually 2 per disk.
-
Great stereo recordings! Who was doing the engineering at Columbia?

Oddly enough, that very LP has evaded my grasp over the years. Once I even bought it and got it home to find a different record inside.
Another thing that hurt their rep was that the "Greatest Hits" collection that was the only Cd available for a long time was not a very representative selection of tunes. It was lousy, in fact.
-
You'd be smug too if Paul Petersen was your brother.

Severe thunderstorm...gonna turn the computer off for a bit....

Remember, DR George, that there are two ENTERPRISE shows on back-to-back tonight.
-
Good Afternoon!
Back up in Fairfax. I ended up taking care of a bunch of things before leaving Richmond, so I didn't get on the road until around 12:30. Of course, as soon as I got on the 64/95 corridor, there was an accident. Thankfully, the police came by very soon, and the delay was only about 15 minutes total. So, not too bad.
*While heading north, I noticed that the southbound traffic was quite heavy, quite early. All I could think of was Steve and his sister driving back from IKEA... yucky. He headed up to IKEA this morning to pick up the rest of the drawers for his new bedroom suite - they were on backorder. In any case...
-
Right now, my father is outside taking down the window screens - he wants to clean them. And next week he's planning on repainting the window frames and shutters. I offered to hold the ladder for him, but he said he'd be fine. I'm working on my laptop in the living room with the base of the ladder in sight, so... -And my father also requested that I park my car in the driveway so that he could use it to foot the ladder. Hmmm...
-I've been going out every five minutes just to make sure he's OK. At least right now, he's washing the screens, so he's not on the ladder. Whew!
On the bright side... It's nice to know that he's back to his ultra-industrious self. He has his six-month check-up next week...
:)

Remember, DR George, that there are two ENTERPRISE shows on back-to-back tonight.
Actually, now that you mention it, I do remember that. Thanks. :)

No, Udaho.

DR Rodzinksi - Have you made it over to 181st to look at the "landslide"? Are they letting anyone over there? -I can't imagine living in one of those apartment buildings in the neighborhood right now.
-
Btw... DR Rodzinksi - You're amazingly eclectic musical tastes continue to astound and impress me. It looks like HHW is a good fit for you.
:)
-
George- I appreciate that. Actually, I have most of what is on that album on other compilations. I really just want the LP out of that weird record-geek sense of wanting completeness. So, if you ever make the CD, that would be cool, but you don't have to go out of your way to do it, 'cause I hope to find the vinyl at some thrift store one of these days.
Jose- Thanks for the kind words. They had cops guarding the entrance to the park across the street from me last night, and I'm a good 10 blocks north of the incident, so I don't think I can get near the scene. It is amazing nobody was hurt! Some lost their cars though.
-
Vixmom- Be sure to look for a mention of BK in the program at Anthony's show this weekend!
-
Ooohhh....
I just realized that Mamma Mia! finally started running the new TV commercials I had heard about. It covers the Broadway, Vegas and Touring companies. And they ditched that grainy audience footage! And it's nice to see Carolee Carmello getting some airtime - even if it is in a commercial.
-
Oooohhh.. Page Six!!!!
Oooooooaaaaaaahhhh....

WHEW!
Worry time is over... My Dad has finished with the windows and ladder for the day.

I was sorry to read that Peter Brown is now small. He doesn't look that different to me, at least the parts that I can see.

Actually, der B's career was in computer design. After he retired, he was able to transfer his knowledge to politics as a computer consultant. Not at all the same thing.

My sister was a big New Christy Minstrels fan.
She had several of their albums, which she would play on the stereo in her room.
Territorial sort that she was, she would get very angry if she found out that I had been listening to "her" music, even if it was through the wall separating our rooms. She was the same way about the Los Angeles Dodgers, whose games she would listen to on the radio, again loudly enough that I couldn't not hear the play-by-play.
She would throw a royal snit-fit if she found that I had been "listening" to "her" music (or ball games).
I was therefor not "allowed" to like the New Christy Minstrels.
She remains a bitch to this day.

The missing ingredient! Perhaps the reason for the onset of the flu.

Floop is pickled beets, cucumber slices, little baby corns, chow mein noodles, grated marble cheese, and ranch dressing. Though we're out of ranch, so I used thousand island just now and it was just as good. Which one did you leave out?

I just watched a movie from 1962, ALL FALL DOWN, William Inge the writer. John Frankenheimer the director. Stars Eva Marie Saint, Warren Beatty, Angela Lansbury, Karl Malden, and Brandon DeWilde. Absolutely mesmerizing. But with a structure that would not be allowed to happen in a studio today. The principals don't get together until almost half the movie's over and that's where some studio exec would say the story starts. He would be wrong, of course; it started on page one. But it takes its own sweet time weaving the tapestry and you get to really live with the characters. It's also very elliptical which would drive modern movie-makers crazy, but I loved it.
It also starred the woman who plays Ilona in the original stage musical of SHE LOVES ME. I don't remember her name, but I recognized her voice immediately. She is badly abused by Warren in Louisville. Nice score by Alex North.

I thought everyone was wonderful especially Brandon deWilde and Angela Lansbury.....and I didn't quite understand the attraction all those women had for BeryBery, but I knew it was something pretty racy! For years I thought it was a William Inge original - there is a lot of Picnic's HAL in BB's adventures, but I found a paperback copy of the novel by James Leo Herlihy many years later....
-
Oh, and don't forget Constance Ford whose libido had certainly been loosened up since A SUMMER PLACE!!!
-
Actually, it will be grilled beast rather then roast beast. And I think I will watch a Mystery Science Theater DVD whilst knawing on my dinner.
-
I've been to the post office, and now I'm off for the day. It occurred to me that I don't recall that anyone mentioned what may be the greatest historical novel ever: WAR AND PEACE.
And on that . . .
I did :D. I think someone else mentioned later.
-
A SUMMER PLACE, oh golly I wish that movie would come out on DVD.
-
Back after a very long day of meetings and mixes fixes. Everything sounds grand now.
Love All Fall Down, love Alex North (the soundtrack finally is available), love Barbara Baxley.
-
George, it arrived in today's mail! Thanks, it looks and sounds great. Yours will be in the mail tomorrow so you should get it sometime late next week.
-
I think you meant OF instead of OR!!!
-
All those desperate women.....the original desperate wannabe housewives.
-
George, it arrived in today's mail! Thanks, it looks and sounds great. Yours will be in the mail tomorrow so you should get it sometime late next week.
Yea!!
-
La Femme Jolie aka The Lovely Wife, HAPPY BIRTHDAY! Did you have birthday cake? :D
-
Well, my workday is done! I'm off to my sister's for dinner before "Star Trek: Enterprise" starts. It's sad that this will be the last episode...ever! :'(
-
How are these performers connected?
Elvis Presley, Carroll Baker, Laurence Harvey, Warren Beatty, Tippy Walker, and Diane Clare
-
Well, sad to me. ::)
-
Oh my someone else in Nigeria wants to use my bank account to deposit $17.5 million - and I get to keep $3 million of it!
-
How are these performers connected?
Elvis Presley, Carroll Baker, Laurence Harvey, Warren Beatty, Tippy Walker, and Diane Clare
They were all members of the New Christy Minstrals and enjoyed floop together whilst reading War & Peace and singing Volare?
-
DR ELMORE did you get to watch the Frances Farmer portion of your video tape yet?
DRJRand54, I'm saving it for Tuesday evening and Wednesday's post-op recreation!
I'm back from seeing Greg Araki's MYSTERIOUS SKIN, a wonderful but intense film, quite painful to watch at times. There are quite wonderful performances, but it is a bleak film, and I don't remember the book being so unrelentingly painful.
DRJane, did you mention WAR AND PEACE yesterday and I missed it? I'm glad you enjoyed Jeeves and Wooster.
-
How are these performers connected?
Elvis Presley, Carroll Baker, Laurence Harvey, Warren Beatty, Tippy Walker, and Diane Clare
Angela Lansbury?

How are these performers connected?
Elvis Presley, Carroll Baker, Laurence Harvey, Warren Beatty, Tippy Walker, and Diane Clare
They all slept with Ann Margaret?

Elmore-good SHOWBOAT VIBES!
TCB I hope you are fully recovered soon.

Elmore-good SHOWBOAT VIBES!
TCB I hope you are fully recovered soon.
Mentally or physically?
Oh, sorry. Thank you, Jane.
-
Sandra congratulations on your A. :D
-
LOL good guesses from DR TOMovOZ and DR TCB - and I can't say that their guesses are incorrect from my personal knowledge....HOWEVER....DRELMORE is correct. Miss Angela Lansbury played the MOTHER of all said performers in motion pictures.
-
And remember the HYPHEN DR TCB - it does make all the difference -
ANN-MARGRET
-
Ah...well DRELMORE not sure how much help it will be in your recovery, but the tape does have some suprises in store that may amuse you, in a mild sort of way.
-
And remember the HYPHEN DR TCB - it does make all the difference -
ANN-MARGRET
Which is why I am currently in rehearsal
for ANN-IE GET YOUR GUN.
-
As opposed to the Minsky's tab version of the show:
Fanny Git Ur Gun!
-
I am trying to figure out how Angela got out of being cast as Susan Hayward's mother in WHERE LOVE HAS GONE (Bette Davis got the role) and Lana Turner's mother in MADAME X (instead of Mrs Br.Gen. Constance Bennett).
-
I am still trying to figure out how we were supposed to believe that Carroll Baker's pointy chin was related to Angela's Dorothy Kilgallen special.
-
I need a pencil and a pad.
-
Sandra congratulations on your A. :D
Thank you, Dear Reader Jane. I bet you F. Scott Fitzgerald had a lot to do with my getting an A.
-
Sandra has an A? Hmmm.
I got my region 2 UK DVD of Carol Reed's Trapeze, which I've started to watch. If I finish it later I'll talk about it in tomorrow's notes.
-
Mentally or physically?
Oh, sorry. Thank you, Jane.
LOL-both. :)
-
Sandra- ;D
-
An "A" - Zelda would be proud as well!
-
It is now time to watch RANCHO NOTORIOUS!
-
ANOTHER line of thunderstorms is here!
-
Sandra has an A? Hmmm.
Hmmm? Is it so hard to believe that I worked hard and studied all semester to get a good grade?
OK, yeah, I see your point. But I did get an A in Rhetoric! Don't ask me how, though.
-
For hours now it has felt like a storm was on its way-just a few raindrops so far.
-
...with a big piece or roast beast.
Oh, the glory of typos!!!
-
BK, have you picked up any of the region 2 AIP films from the 50s...WAR OF THE COLOSSAL BEAST, VIKING WOMEN AND THE SEA SERPENT, REFORM SCHOOL GIRL, THE UNDEAD, HOW TO MAKE A MONSTER, etc?
I keep hearing noises that they will be released in the US eventually but nothing ever happens...I am tempted to buy overseas!
-
And now, before the whining about how no one is around starts again, I must wussburger. We have a fundraising yard sale to help staff tomorrow, and setting it up requires we be there by six-thirty in the morning.
That's three-thirty AM, West Coast Sissies time.
:o
8)
:-*
-
Yes, I have several of the Arkoff collection from region 2. They're just decent transfers, and all full-frame.
Sandra: Oh, you got an A, like a grade. I thought you suddenly got a rear end.
-

She was on Broadway with ANYONE CAN WHISTLE and MAME!
-
I too watched ALL FALL DOWN as well before checking out the Pacers game and the Elvis special on CBS.
Brandon deWilde is mesmerizing in his performance, and the beauty of the picture is in not making him an angelic sort. Nor are the parents stock bad or overbearing people. Even BeryBery has some shading to his character. A really unique movie, with odd touches: Lansbury's freaking out in one scene screaming over BeryBery's picture and she's just about to go for the Oscar and push it over the top, and the scene just fades out immediately, mid-rant. It's perfect. Beatty is chewing food in about half of his scenes. It is very Inge-esque in its theatricality at times, but never too heavy.
-
She was on Broadway with ANYONE CAN WHISTLE and MAME!
Did a parade go by?
-
I'm going to have to really buckle down Winsocki this weekend and write at least ten pages. I've only managed to get out a few lines yesterday and today.
This money boy we met with today was most peculiar, but he says he can deliver, so we'll see. He's one of these young go-getter entrepeneur types, and apparently he has a good success rate in raising dough. He's also one of these hipper-than-hip right up to the minute types. He told us the newest, hippest thing with young Hollywood is Hooka parties - wherein young Hollywood types such on a hooka pipe and sample tobaccos from all over the world. It has replaced cigars as the new hip thing. Young Hollywood makes me want to vomit on the ground. The other new hip thing with young Hollywood is instead of buying homes in nice neighborhoods they are buying up lofts in downtown LA, and I don't mean the downtown LA of the Music Center. I mean the downtown LA that's seedy. And now, of course, loft prices are going through the roof because of young Hollywood. Two years from now they will understand how stupid they were and they will sell at a loss and move on to the next hip thing, and that part of downtown LA will go back to being skid row.
-
Jose I hope all is well for your father next week.
TiVo-REVELATIONS but I’m not sure we will watch it. Maybe we will just skip to the conclusion next week.
DVD-MEET THE FOCKERS
CD-in my car, WICKED and HANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSON.
-
Over the last year I have been reading about the popularity of lofts in downtown LA. Nothing to do with the Hollywood crowd, just they are becoming popular for those working in the city who prefer not to have a long commute to work. Downtown LA is making a come-back. :-\
Bryan lives in a loft in Portland. They are becoming more and more popular in cities across the country and in Canada.
-
I'm tired!
-
BK, if Young Hollywood makes you want to vomit, be wary of getting into business with him...whether he can deliver or not. I just feel if you get a bad vibe off people, you should heed it. You have also had experience in this realm before and thus should be circumspect.
-
Back in 1965 -- some of you might not have been born then! -- the New Christie Minstrels, along with Gene Kelly, guest starred in the very first Julie Andrews Special!
"One Little Christie Plunking On A Banjo.
One Little Christie Plunking Out A Tune......"
"Today" is also one of my favourite songs. I do like the John Davidson version of it....
That would be a swell one to sing for Mr Haines, I think!
-
This is not what I was talking about earlier, but this is also something new I am working on.

I loved the movie A MIGHTY WIND especially the songs the various groups sung. Loved them, their tunefulness, and the innocence of the three wholesome groups that was just so corny and wonderful. That's a DVD I need to pull off the shelf and watch again soon.
(However, I still think BEST IN SHOW is the best of Guest's satires.)
-
I'm sad for ENTERPRISE to be ending as well, DR George, but I can't say I was very taken with their finale. Having those two NEXT GENERATION players robbed it of any tension since they TOLD us who lived and died during the mission, and then we just watched it happening. There were some nice, nostalgic moments. Who knew Hoshi had a little crush on Tripp when I thought Archer was her object of admiration?
Still, not the memorable send-off I was hoping for.
-
I like RANCHO NOTORIOUS. Supposedly, Lang wanted Marlene to get dirtier and less attractive as the film ran, but Marlene fought him every step of the way making sure that she looked stunning even in her death scene.
-
Good Evening!
Finally had some dinner - Afghan - lamb kabobs, bread and chickpea curry. Yummy! -Strangely enough, the place I went to run out of rice - ?!?!?! But the extra bread and salad was nice. -And the bread was really good tonight too.
And that's about it so far...
-
Can't say I was much taken with NUMBERS' season finale tonight. Hirsch again inserted into a scene needlessly to harp on Rob Morrow not being at home enough. I'm surprised he didn't nudge both sons into asking the women they worked with on dates - the policewoman for Charlie and the doctor for Rob (can't think of his character's name). The math seemed less intrinsic to the story tonight, too.
(I did enjoy Charlie's lesson in the math-for-dummies sequence.)
-
Well we are back from the theatre
It was Mr. Vixmom's night out with the gaming crew so I tokk the Vixter and her frined Emily to see Ten Little Indians. Neither of them had seen it before and a friend of mine is playing the policeman.
We were given fifth row center seats unfortunatly directly behind the row of blue haired ladies who were acting as each others hearing aids and memory aids. Fortunately, as the tendsion mounted on stage they settled down.
The English accents were a bit forced, but the sets, costumes, lighting and the acting were wonderful.
The girls were mesmerized, screamed at the gunshots, and the Vixter had actually covered her head and curled into a little ball in the final showdown, I had to force her to look up so she wouldn't miss the suprise ending.
Afterwards we went backstage where both girls were relieved to see the dead and the killers as regular people and the actors were all quite pleased at the admiration for their performance.
A wonderful evening all told.
-
I remember that Julie Andrews special very, very well, and was SO disappointed she lost the Emmy to a Bob Hope Christmas special that year. (The show did win Best Direction.)
-
Does any DR out there know what format Sprint "saves" their picture-phone photos in? They seem to have a ".zi" extension, but that's not compatible with anything.
???
-
! -Strangely enough, the place I went to run out of rice - ?!?!?!
You may want to put them in touch with Woody & der B, I understand they have a suffiet of the stuff
-
I auditioned for a local production of TEN LITTLE INDIANS a couple of year ago (wanted the doctor or the detective), but I wasn't cast. Nice thing about the show is that for men there are parts for all ages.
-
Speaking of parts, Matt are you keepimg your goatee for Georges? I have always though of him as cleanshaven despite Robin Williams
-

sorry, don't have sprint, and besides I am technically challenged
-
Now I think of it, didn't the original actor in the french version have a moustache? Hmmm I wonder why I think of him as cleanshaven......
-
Will there be a video of your production? If yes, will you be sharing them?
-
Well here it is 11:36 at night, and all we east coaster sare working had posting away, dear Jane had to leave I am syur with very good reasons... but where oh where are the rest of the west coast crowd?
Has anybody heard from DR Jed?
Does DR Ann still love her job?
Did DR Joey raise the money he needed?
Are the Pogues out celebrating a very special birthday?
Was there cake?
Notice I kept all this to one post?
-

I told the director I'd do whatever he wanted. He elected to keep the look saying I looked more Continental with it. I have always trusted the director in regard to facial hair. When the show is over, however, I suspect I will go back to the mustache only.
-

They are usually recorded, but I reserve the right to withhold sharing the video if the show turns out not to my liking. As of last night, I think we'd have to PAY an audience to come see it. Unlike NUNCRACKERS (at the same theater which was a joy to put together), this has been a very frustrating production.

OOH! Are you sharing the video of Nuncrackers? Iwould love to see it and would send it back when I was done if you wouldn't mind letting me have a look.
I hope that with your new "son" things will take a turn for the better in this production
-
Tomofoz!! How are you? What time and day is it? I know its the end of summer but that's the best I can reckon at this late hour (11:59 Am EST Friday night)
-

I have always envied men the ability to totally transform their look by the growing or shaving of facial hair its much harder and much leess temporary when a women tries a new look
Mr. Vixmom, while generally sporting facial hair of some type or another (we were married over two years before I saw him clean shaven) wanders betweena beard of various lengths depencding on his mmod and the weather, mutton chops (the current look) or a moustache, my brother Bob goes fom cleanshaven to goetee to beard to moustache and back again
Not that I am having whisker envy you understand (great, I'll wake up with a chinful of 'em now! ::)) just the ability you have to change your look so easliy
-
Well it is now officially tomorrow, I came, I read, I frenzied and so to bed.
-
2.58pm Saturday.
-
Well, far be it from me to be a wussburger on a Friday Evening, even if I haven't completely recovered from my touch of flu. And, as usual, it is TomovNWoz, my son Jed, and yours truly holding down the fort.

Hmm....
I was wondering why I was feeling so tired already, and then I remembered that I've been up since 7:00AM - instead of 10:30am or Noon, so...
But I'll stick it out for a little bit more...
-
Employment update... the search continues. :-\
Ahh well, I guess two new jobs in one apartment within a week was a bit much to ask.
-
I'm sorry, Jed. Good luck...still!!

Did you ever see the episode of "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy" where the straight guy wore a toupee and his wife of 13 years had never seen him without it and their kids didn't even know that he wore one?? That was a pretty cool episode. Kyan and the guys talked him into FINALLY giving it up...totally...and he looked really good without it. Not that he looked bad with it, but (on TV) it didn't look completely natural. Anyway, the only person who didn't want him to remove it was his mother! She hated the idea of him being bald (and actually, they did leave a bit of head stubble, but you could see where no hair grew) and it still took her a while to warm up to it after she had seen him without it...and how everyone LOVED his new look (and clothes and house).
-
Obits were a dead end job anyway DR Jed.
Best of positive job hunting thoughts are still with you.

Thank you Dear Friend. I should be here at some stages for the next two days. Maybe they will serve "Floop" (Flooup) at the hospital.
-
Pogue, I know exactly what you are talking about. This isn't that kind of money guy - he basically does fund raisers and gets people money. However, I did get a peculiar vibe and I don't think we'll be using him for anything. I have other ideas, oh, yes, I have other ideas.
Back from seeing Adryan Russ (my proofer and friend), and the Havertys (Doug will be the official booklet designer for Kritzerland CDs). Lots of fun.
Notes may be just a tad late as I have not eaten anything since noon and I have to wolf down a Subway turkey sandwich before I fall over.
What a great day of postings - it did this old heart good to read such excellent postings.
-
Back to TOTD: Currently listening to the Little River Band. It was preceded by The Moody Blues and 10 C.C. It's a seventies day.
DVD tonight will quite likely be "Ladies in Lavender" starring the Dames Judi & Maggie.
-
Well... It's been looooong day for me... and I really don't want to sleep through most of tomorrow, so...
Goodnight.
-
I'm just getting started. I, too, had a long day, but I feel completely awake and full of vim and vigor, not necessarily in that order. I ate my sandwich - it was quite yummilicious and was just what the doctor ordered. I always do that - I always order just what the doctor ordered. I'm just an old copycat.
-
Here is a photograph of the Haverty's very cute daughter, Hartley. Hartley, as a child actress, played Billy Crystal's daughter in Mr. Saturday Night.
