Title: A PLEASANT VALLEY SUNDAY
Post by: bk on May 17, 2021, 12:06:05 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were pleasant and written on a Sunday (evening) in the Valley, and now it is time for you to post until the pleasant Valley cows come home.

Today, a new co-worker starts.  Her name is Vivian...I think.  I'll find out officially when I get there.  A new employee's first day is usually filling out a lot of forms and there's some kind of new employee orientation, but I think that that's online now, so she'll be watching videos to learn some things.

I had a very good night of sleep after the lousy one the night before. Annabelle has abandoned me for her aerie in the bookcases. I am not happy about this because I can no longer climb the ladder to vacuum it or replace her pillow with another. It's got to be really dusty up there, and that is not good for her allergies.

Kitty cleanup is finished, the bed is made and my meds taken. I'm pretty much at loose ends for 30 minutes before I have to deal with the ordeal of putting on my shoes and switching bags on my walker. The recyclables bag comes off and the trave bag goes on.

DR GEORGE it seems that Harold Lloyd lost his index finger and thumb on his right hand in an accident with a prop bomb in 1919.  He wore a special set of gloves with prosthetic fingers on that hand and sometimes it looks as if he is making a gesture here and there......

I couldn't remember how he lost his fingers, but I did know that he did.  And yesterday when Dennis James the organist spoke about the movies and the music that he was playing, he did mention that whole story so that people who didn't know could watch and see how he didn't/couldn't move his index finger and thumb.

My sentiments exactly, DR George! It was my own fault. I had been warned to allow 90 minues, but I never thought that meant the ride to the appointment.

Back from picking up packages, one of which contained some Keto friendly stuff, like no carb rye bread - I made two fried egg sandwiches - net zero carbs and while I wouldn't say the bread is great, it does the trick when there's stuff that's tasty within the two slices. And only 45 calories a slice.

DR Elmore, so sorry your ride was a bust. In my experience these rides often do not go well. I receive 12 free round-trips to medical appointments each year as part of my health insurance -- a great perk, in my view. But it's always a pain. The previous ride scheduling company was most likely overseas, as all the reps had accents and were sometimes difficult to understand. they'd ask the time of your appointment, then manually calculate the pick-up time. But they allowed too much extra time, an hour for what is easily a 30-minute trip. The current scheduling company does it by computer and it doesn't allow enough time. If my appointment is at 9:15, they'd say the pick-up time was at 8:49, then say that the ride might be there 15 minutes earlier or 15 minutes later. What?! I have to fudge my appointment time accordingly. Then there are the kamikaze drivers.

I've often said that if I knew a reliable driver I'd schedule with him or her and pay for it myself, but I don't know of anyone. Ubers aren't always available, but maybe they would be if you scheduled in advance. I haven't found a solution, but I do appreciate the $50+ that it saves me.

I hope you find a way to deal with Access-a-Ride that is satisfactory.

Today's errand run to Trader Joe's surprised me when I saw quite a few empty parking spaces in their lot. This is almost unheard of. Has everyone tossed their masks and gone on vacation? I think TJ's has discontinued the vegan ice cream that I love, but I don't think they would have lost any business due to it. There was an employee at the door, but she wasn't offering hand sanitizer. We were all wearing masks, though.

Hi Jeanne.  It was nice thanks.

Every other treadmill & cross trainer had a sign saying "out of service" making it comfortable to use them.  I liked the treadmill at this gym very much.

Before using the treadmill I found a leg push machine I was comfortable with.  Since it has been awhile I kept the weight down on it and did more repetitions than I used to do.  I have to be careful not to over stress my muscles and shut them down.  For now this is all I will do.

When I went to pre-order the Criterion Company documentary, I noticed that Criterion has a streaming service. I don't know if they offer every Criterion release, but it's $100 for a year. I wonder if that might be worth it. Apparently many of the Blu Ray extras are offered, along with the films, for streaming.

Just finished watching the Roundabout Theater's production of Zora Neale Hurston's Spunk. The music was wonderful and it worked well in the Zoom format. The play itself was a little broad, Hurston didn't practice the art of playwriting as much as she did short stories and novels. But it was enjoyable from start to finish. And like BK's productions, the sound quality was good throughout. Nobody's voice disappeared or started crackling. No feedback, no echoes.

spunk was available only through tonight. After it was done, I went outside and finished up a yard project I've been working on for the past two months or so. I had trimmed back some overgrown shrubs, and discovered that a couple had died. The ones still alive are beginning to come back, but I was also faced with what to do with all that trimmed stuff. The green barrel gets filled quickly and only gets picked up on Mondays. Well, I filled today's bucket to the brim and it seems to be all but a few small limbs. It fills good to see the end of project like that.

I can now try to figure out what I'm going to do with the new space that I've cleared. I know I have to get rid of some pesky volunteers and invasives. Thankfully, they're all under two feet tall and can probably be taken care of with some light shoveling to get rid of their roots.
