Last night we watched the 1956 Hitchcock film, The Man Who Knew Too Much, starring James Stewart and Doris Day, whom I love. I remember seeing the previews, but I never saw the movie when it was released. I enjoyed it very much, and it's one of Miss Day's best films, I think. I was surprised because I think she's rather dreadful in that later husband-trying-to-murder-wife thing she was in.  Then, again, I think she's rather poor - maybe it's just the material and directors - in many of her 1960s films.

Strange dreams. I was supposed to go back to work. Somehow I was going on foot. Met up with two coworkers, also on foot. We encountered construction, so we were walking around it snd somehow got into neighborhoods and buildings. We got separated in one building. The people there wouldn’t let me leave. They thought I was a patient trying to escape or I had seen too much. I had no ID with me. That’s when I woke up.

Dear Readers, my very dear friend Peter Foley has been fighting cancer for over eight years. It began as an eye tumorm and it's been under control with treatment until this year. He's been in hospital for a week and I'm very worried about him. I'm sure he, his wife Kate, and daughter Grace could use some super healthy vibes.

I had a strange dream last night, but only pieces reman. I was working in a recording studio, and the lobby was littered with debris. There was a lanky young janitor in a blue shirt sweeping up. Then I was helping clear the mess when he told me to stop; he could handle it. There was this hole in the floor where he was tossing trash and Annabelle, Thatch, and Stella were in it staring up at me.

Someone posted this link not long ago, probably on Facebook. If you want to see Mr. Herrmann in action on some Carl Ruggles and in an informal discussion of same with John Amis...

My dream was one from my standard repertoire that hadn't seen much action lately. I was in this indoor mall type of place, that I took to be one in which the shops were more geared toward the wealthy, based on a snippet of a few ladies' conversation overheard as I was walking. But I was turning into the wing that held the concert hall, and when I entered it, they showed me to my seat. Then I was back out in the mall and I realized I really had to get in there now before the concert was to begin. This time I was given one of their last available seats over on the side, and I knew I should have just stayed there in the better section earlier. But now this new seating area was morphing into an outer lobby where, because it turned out they were indeed totally at capacity, they were setting up individual chairs for people and we'd be watching the concert on wall-mounted flat screen TVs. For whatever reason, the orchestra seemed to be the L.A. Philharmonic but there was nothing specific to go on. As soon as I sat in this lone chair, suddenly a kid I sort of recognized from one of the high school pits I've played in said "Hi Charles, Jim Webber" -- a name I remember from the dream with total clarity but which means absolutely nothing to me. So anyway, Jim Webber sat next to me, but now it was a table setting, and it looked like each long table would hold eight or more people. The place was rapidly filling up, but I got up to walk over somewhere and look at something, and when I got back to that table, Jim Webber and whoever else had joined were now across the lobby at another table. I didn't know if they were beckoning me to go over and join them there, or if I should just stay put. Yes, it was still the outer lobby of a "Philharmonic Hall" that was located in a shopping mall, and yes, the concert was still about to begin.

And that's it.   :)

(As I was waking up, my clock radio was playing, and the piece sounded like it must be a bassoon concerto. It was in B-flat, which I believe the Mozart one is in, but I can't say I recognized it, and maybe it was just a passage of something featuring the bassoon. Maybe I can find out what they were playing and if any of the announcements beforehand were triggering elements of the dream.)

I think there are at least two modern Storm Cloud Cantata recordings - the piece was also used in the original Man Who Knew Too Much. Of course, I love the remake, which is why it adorns the cover of Benjamin Kritzer. Yes, two recordings of the Storm Clouds Cantata. One on a Chandos CD of film music by Arthur Benjamin and Leighton Lucas, which has washy sound but is otherwise fine, and one on a Hitchcock album, conducted by John Mauceri - I have that somewhere but haven't heard it in ages - I know that one is a live recording.

For every action there is a reaction. I've upgraded my computer to Mac OS10 Catalina, which is as far as an 8-year-old computer will upgrade, and I've lost all of my emails and address book, which was on SeaMonkey.  In the past, you could override Mac's rejection and download SeaMonkey, but not - ha ha ha! - in Caralina. Damn.

And why do I have SeaMonkey, you may ask. Because when mu Mac man set me up in 2001, he made Netscape my primary search engine and my email was on it. SeaMonkey replaced Netscape. Now I don't know what to do.

I was slow to upgrade to Catalina because I waited for the all clear from those who have gone before me. The main issue was the musical application Apple MainStage, in case there were glitches as yet unresolved. Of course, I'm not exactly running around using MainStage these days. But you never know. I'll take a decent keyboard gig if it comes knocking at my door between now and when we begin rehearsing the holiday show

(Actually, I tried to take one. Curtain Call in Stamford is doing 1776 between now and then. I never go around asking if I may play a certain thing, but I couldn't resist, especially since I know the MD. But he's playing the keyboard book and has no need for a second pair of hands.)

Fortunately, I can say that the upgrade went fine and I probably only had a little bit of detritus to clean up. It also only took an hour or so -- but I was only coming from Mojave, the OS before it. My MacBook Pro is a 2015, which is one of the favorites of musicians because it still has those little things called "ports", and the 2012-2015s are just a real stable implementation of Macs. So this one's six years old, and it'll remain to be seen how far in OS's they let it go.

Well, thank you, Google! I looked up "Override MacOS Catalina," and one site suggested I open my applications in Finder, not the Mac HD and click on the desired application there. Well, it worked! My SeaMonkey 2.53.8.1 is running again.

From filmmaker Reinaldo Marcus Green (MONSTERS AND MEN; upcoming KING RICHARD), along with the Academy Award-winning writing team behind BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN (Diana Ossana & Larry McMurtry) and Academy Award nominee Mark Wahlberg, JOE BELL tells the intimate and emotional true story of an Oregonian father who pays tribute to his gay teenage son Jadin, embarking on a self-reflective walk across America to speak his heart to heartland citizens about the real and terrifying costs of bullying.

Annaliese wants to shred those documents, but JB hates the sound of the shredder, so she took everything with her.

Tonight I went with a high school friend to see Henry V. Fun production of a play that’s all over the place. High and low comedy, war, drama, speech after speech, nothing really holding it all together, except Shakespeare’s genius.

Afterwards, two guys did a half-hour ad lib comedy sketch, supposedly a play Shakespeare didn’t write. The king got stabbed to death with a fatal fan. It wasn’t great, but it had a few good belly laughs.

In Pierce County today, two men were shot to death, and a third man was killed by a hit-and-run driver.  Detectives are continuing to investigate all of these today, but it is beleved that one of them may have been intentional.

What a horrible dream.  I could understand it if you were in the hole and Thatch was throwing dirt on you.
