Title: SWEDISH FISH
Post by: bk on May 22, 2005, 10:07:59 PM
Well, you've read the notes, you know all about the Swedish Fish and the Mexican Cows and now it is time for you to post until the Mexican Cows come home, which will be as soon as they leave south of the border.

And the word of the day is: FECUNDITY!

Good Morning!

Dishes washed.  -And, thankfully, I did not break the skin on my right thumb when I was scrubbing some crud off a steak knife a little too zealously.  I was using a scrubber-sponge, but somehow "slipped".  So now I have some "grooves" in my thumb from the teeth of the knife.  Whew!  Close call!

*And what have I learned from all of this:  If you have a dishwasher, use it!

;)

Ah, FECUNDITY!

-Ah, reminds me of that marriage vows from Maltby & Shire's Closer Than Ever that uses the word "fecund".   I think it was the first - and only - time I've heard that word used in a song.

As for "weird" snacks and candies...

Ah, where to begin...

I am also a big fan of Swedish Fish, as well as their close cousin, Blue Dolphins (which are usually blue-raspberry flavored, not that I ever seen a blue raspberry).  The knock-offs, Jelly Fish, are OK, but they can't hold a candle to the original.   And I prefer the full-size Swedish Fish as opposed to the Mini-Swedish Fish.  *I believe a few years ago when the Sour Patch Kids craze caught on, there were also Sour Swedish Fish.  I liked those too.

Boston Baked Beans, Lemon Head, Grape Heads, etc... All those various Ferrara-Pan candies.  And you can still find them for $0.25 in those small boxes at some stores.

Fruit Slices - those sugared, jellied thingies.  Any and all colors/flavors.

Burnt Peanuts - A close cousin to Boston Baked Beans, but with a textured coating instead of a smooth one.  There's also a few names for this one too, but I can't recall them right now.

Corn Nuts - Preferably the Original Flavor.  -Brings back memories of the ferry ride to and from Port Angels to Seattle.

Beef Jerky - I like it too.  I go through phases where I always have some on hand to having none at all for a couple of months.  The new "soft style" and "nuggets" taste OK, but they sort of scare me - just what is keeping the beef soft?!?!?

Although it is not that weird in Europe, I also like some traditional salted licorice from time to time.  Quite the taste sensation to be sure.

Gummy Bears and almost any other Gummi-Fruit/Product from Haribo.  I'm especially fond of the Gummi Grapefruit, Peaches, Cherries and Coke Bottles.

Hmm.... 7-11 is open 24 hours, right?

;)

Ethnically speaking, I like a bunch of the tamarind snacks.  Just such a unique flavor, sour and sweet and ??.

I really like the Thai tamarind snacks that are sugared, salted and seasoned with ground red chiles.  A great rehearsal snack/pick-me-up.

There's a whole line of Filipino candies made with powdered and/or condensed milk and various flavorings.  I tend to overeat those whenever I find a bag of them.  The ube - purple yam - variety is my favorite, as well as the langka, jackfruit.

Some larger oriental markets also have vendors selling "dried peanut squid".  It's basically dried/cooked squid that been "tenderized" by cutting lots of little cuts in it, then it's basted with peanut-butter basically.  Try it!  You'll like it!

And I also like the middle-eastern and Spanish dried garbanzo beans, chick peas.  They've actually been cooked first, then roasted and/or dried until crisp and crunchy.  *Whole Foods now sells a Spanish snack mix which is comprised of dried chick peas, dried fava beans, Marcona almonds, pistachio nuts and corn nuts - very good!  (And I have a container downstairs in the kitchen as I type.)  I first came across these while sitting at the bar at Stella's in Richmond.  The owner offered me a handful of them.  I first tried the plain and salted kind.  A great bar knosh.  But then they also come with a candy/sugar coating on them, usually in bright colors - similar to a Jordan Almond coating, but much thinner.  Sort of like Greek m&m's.

I used to down those wasabi peas like there was no tomorrow, but there was one time when I had way too many of them - well, way too much wasabi in my system.  So, now, I usually prefer to have the plain dried/fried peas.

And then...

And then...

There is a huge Korean market near my parents house here in Fairfax.  Actually, two of them: Hanh Ah Reum and Super H Mart - they're both run by the same company, with the Super H being a bit more "American friendly".  In any case, they both have a large selection of bulk foods, with a bunch of bins of different snacks.  Some I will gladly sample and buy.  Others... well... I look at them at least.  Yes, the King of Weird Foods does have his limits.

:-\

Have any of the DRs in NYC been to that huge Japanese/Korean market across the river in Edgewater?  WOW!!!!  So much stuff!  And, like a lot of Asian supermarkets, the produce section is one big bargain bin - and since they do so much business, the turnover is very fast, and the produce is always fresh.

And then there's all those "healthy snacks" in the Bulk Foods section of Whole Foods...

Who knew chocolate- or carob-covered rice cakes were health food?!?!?  -Especially the mint-chocolate or mint-carob coated ones!

But I do have to admit, I'm still trying to figure out the reasoning  behind chocolate coating soy nuts and sunflower seeds.  Although those brightly colored, candy-coated sunflower seeds do look cool.

Chocolate Dipped Potato Chips

Chocolate Dipped Ritz Crackers

Chocolate/Fudge Dipped Oreos - Preferable homemade, not off the grocery store shelf.  I want the real deal chocolate-wise!

Chocolate Dipped Rice Krispie Treats

Chocolate Dipped Slices of Frozen Cheesecake - Great State Fair food!

Oh... then there's the whole Fried/Battered category...

Fried Twinkies
Fried Mars Bars
Fried Snickers
Fried Oreos
Fried Cadbury Eggs

-Just check out the dessert menu of The Chip Shop in Park Slope.  *And they're Fish & Chips are very tasty too.  And they stick with tradition by frying their Fried Mars Bars (both the British and American versions) in the same oil they fry their fish 'n' chips.

When I was on tour a few years ago, a mother of one of my tour-mates would always send her daughter a box full of goodies for the company.  My favorite treat of hers was an almond bark she would make with White Chocolate and Smokehouse Almonds - the original flavor, the one in the blue can.  The combination of the creamy, sweet white chocolate (actually, I've found the white chocolate "bark"/candy coating "bricks" work best), and the salty, seasoned roasted almonds... totally addictive.  And very easy to make too.  Just melt the package of white chocolate bark, stir in a can or two of Smokehouse almonds, spread onto a cookie sheet until cool and hard.  Break into pieces, and Enjoy!

Hmmm... Where's the nearest 24-hour grocery store... Ah, Harris Teeter is nearby... Hmmm.... Oh, and there's also the new Wegman's....

OH!!!

How could I forget...

Fried Pickles!!!

I prefer wedges/spears as opposed to slices/chips.  Some places do a cornmeal type breading - sort of like fried chicken - other places use a batter coating.  I like 'em either way.  And with ranch dressing on the side for dipping!
Title: Re:SWEDISH FISH

And does anyone still make that Fried Pasta Snack/Chip stuff anymore?  I used to buy something called "Past'Amore" in the bulk bins at Safeway all the time.  It was deep-fried pasta - usually rotini and penne shapes - seasoned with salt and parmesan cheese.  A great, surprisingly light crunch.

There used to be a restaurant here in Olympia called Crackers (they closed probably 10-15 years ago).  They used to have deep fried pickle spears that were the best...okay, they were the only that I'd ever had, but they were darn good.  I can't remember what kind of batter they used, though.

And I also like that very Euro-snack of fried green beans - they're usually coated in a very thin batter before being put in the hot oil.  That chain of Euro-style hot dogs and other finger foods in NYC - just two locations, one in Chelsea, one up by Central Park - sells them.  -Can't remember the name right now...blue and white color scheme.  -And some pretty great hots dogs, franks, sausages, wursts, etc.  OHH!!  And the sell "Steak Fingers" too - pieces of beef that have been battered, then fried in oil.

-I only saw them on the menu... I haven't tried them.  Yet.

I'm too much of a savory person for all this chocolate (although the Dark Chocolate M&Ms are tasty).

I'm more likely to heat up my pot of oil and deep fry something.  A couple of days ago, I did that with tater tots, for myself and der B.  Served 'em with a couple of dipping sauces, wasabi and chipotle, and they vanished lickety split.

Then, yesterday, I cut some corn tortillas and made fresh chips, with a little sprinkling of salt.  Doesn't work with flour tortillas, but I've had some luck finding the corn tortillas lately.
Title: Re:SWEDISH FISH
Post by: S. Woody White on May 23, 2005, 04:04:33 AM
And yes, DR Rodzinsky, venison.  Der B's son-in-law likes to murder deer every fall, but feels guilty if the carcass isn't used.  Net result, we get venison in our freezer.

I ended up making stroganoff, using ground venison.

Start out by cooking up (in a wide skillet) some bacon that's been cut into 1/2 inch strips.  Add to the pan a couple of thinly sliced onions and some minced garlic, and stir every few minutes while the onions soften.  Mushrooms, thickly sliced, maybe a half pound, get added next, along with salt, pepper and a few red pepper flakes, and cook until the mushers lose some of their liquid.  Then add a pound of ground venison.

All right, you could do this with ground beef, but I like the flavor of venison better, and the bacon makes up for the leanness of the deer meat, along with adding flavors of it's own.

Cook until the venison has browned, stirring and breaking it into smaller chunks.  Then add a couple of tablespoons of flour, and cook for another couple of minutes.  Add a can of beef broth (yep, three different meat flavors going on here), stir, and simmer over low heat while you get the noodles going.

Seperate pan, boil some water and cook up some wide egg noodles.  Drain the noodles, add some butter into the pan along with some poppy seeds (optional).

Back to the stroganoff.  Stir into the mixture some chopped parsley (works better than dill, I think) and finally, off the heat, just enough sour cream to make it all creamy.  Put some of the noodles into a deep soup bowl, ladle the stroganoff over the noodles, and enjoy!

I'm a'sittin' here
A'wishin'
I had Pippin
In my iPod.

Every so often, I'll give into my sweet tooth and buy myself a bag of Swedish Fish.  I'm also fond of Red Hot Dollars (which aren't hot), gummy bears,  or malted balls.  But I don't think there's anything odd or weird about any of them.

At Easter time, I like marshmallow Peeps, but I like them when they are stale after sitting out of their packaging in the Easter basket for a few days.

Speaking of marshmallows, I happened to catch a segment of an old Marth Stewart show yesterday in which she made a bizarre variation of Rice Krispie marshmallow treats.  Along with starting out with a marshmallow base that included something like a pound of melted butter, she used six cups each of Rice Krispies, Cap'N'Crunch and Fruit Loops.  She then managed to jam this massive amount of mixture into a 9" x 9" x 2" pan, which, once set, was sliced into these huge 3" x 3" squares.  I couldn't imagine taking more than a few bites of these things before getting sick of them.  They are the fruitcake of marshmallow treats.

Good morning, all!  DRHisaka, welcome back.  I hope everything is going for you.

DRJoey, the marathon news is great.  I'm sure you're very pleased.  How did  your fundraising turn out?

I slept late; after DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES, I turned to Showtime and watched the 2-hr QUEER AS FOLK, episodes 1 & 2, did the hot tub thing, and went to bed.  I canceled my date with Tams-Witmark this morning and slept in; I've got some GOLDEN APPLE work here to do on the violin books, so I can stay busy at home.

I may listen to another Julian Slade musical today, THE DUENNA, based on Sheridan's ballad opera and source for a Prokofieve not-too-comic comic opera; the show which featured Patricia Rotledge in 1954 never had a cast recording, but it did get a complete BBC-radio broadcast and I have excerpts from that.

DR JRand, I've seen two productions of Pippin that eshewed almost all of Fosse's direction and they were, at best, minimally charming in one and flat-out bad in the other.  The one production tried to stick to a medieval feel throughout and came across as a morality play with music (The Manson Trio number became a waltz.)  The other production at least played up the idea of the story of Pippin as being told by a band of travelling players (I liked how they imaginitively used their travelling stage wagon as various scenic elements throughout the show.)  But it still avoided any achronistic showbiz references.  IMHO, the show does require razzle-dazzle.

As for my weird taste buds, I really don't have any foods that I think are too strange that I enjoy. Things that have been mentioned like Pixie Stix and the was bottles with tasty syrup inside, I certainly liked when younger, but I haven't had them in years. Candy lipstick I can also remember loving (had a cherry taste) as a kid.

Today, about the strangest thing I eat is frosted mini-wheats out of the box without milk.

I would, however, LOVE to try some of those fried candy bars. I've never had one but I would certainly risk elevated levels of cholesterol just to sample some.

Home today...sinus headache behind right eye.  Am drinking some coffee and wishing/hoping/praying my sinus meds would kick in.

So what's the lull in the JoseSPiano-George show that started off the day?

Keep it going, guys.  Don't wuss out and claim the need for sleep!

I would, however, LOVE to try some of those fried candy bars. I've never had one but I would certainly risk elevated levels of cholesterol just to sample some.

DR MattH - Your cholesterol levels would be safe when/after eating a fried candy bar.  Since there's no animal producst involved (usually), there's no cholesterol to worry about.  Now as for your carb (sugar, flour, etc.) and fat (oil) levels, well...

Bon Appetit!

*Remember, it's only bad for you if you feel guilty about it.

Thanks for the PIPPIN info, and for the links, DR JOSE.  Interesting.  I have not seen our script, so I don't know if it is the "new" ending or not, but if that is the one MTI sends out, that's the one we get.

And thanks for the costume changeout info DRJOSE.

I am from Indiana and I am a Virgo.  I don't eat anything that looks strange. :)

Congrats to DRJOEY on his marathon.

YIKES!

Well, I guess it's good I decided to sleep in this morning, and not head down to Richmond...  I just saw a report on the news of a major traffic tie up on I-95.  Apparently, some construction crew happened to hit a gas line.  Nothing caught on fire or exploded, but they're still working on turning off the gas line - which, due to it's position, they will have to do by crimping the line off at one end since there's no shut-off valve in that part of the line.  It's a pretty major "leak".  They were showing the gas coming out of the ground.  And you could hear it hissing in the air as the newscaster was reporting from the scene.  The accident apparently happened around 9:15 this morning, and it may still take a few hours to get it under control.  In the meantime, the area around the site has been evacuated, and traffic on Route 1 and 95 has been extremely limited.

OH!  And there was another tractor trailer accident in the Express Lanes this morning at the Springfield Interchange...  And the truck is still blocking the lane - they hope to have it cleared by 2:00...

Yep... A good day to stay up here in Fairfax.

I wasn't sure what The Theatre World Award was.  BUT it turns out that it is given to 6 actors and 6 actresses who have made their first MAJOR appearance on/off Broadway this season.

The 12 are listed here.  Mr BK will be looking at/and be looked at by Christina Applegate and Hank Azaria, among others.  ;D

As for the new ending for Pippin...

I think I've recounted this here before... Well, at least on the "old" board... In any case...

From what I understand, a director in London tried this out a few years ago, and Mr. Schwartz liked it.  I believe it was incorporated into the Papermill Playhouse production a few years ago, but I'm not sure.  However, I did hear about this "option" directly from Mr. Schwartz's assistant, so...

Basically, the whole cast is treated like one big ensemble, a troupe of actors.  As the Leading Player "directs" the show, he starts picking out various people of the ensemble to play their parts - Charlemagne, Fastrada, Louis, Catherine, etc.  At the "end" of the show, the "Magic To Do" vamp starts back up again.  Pippin, Catherine and the Boy (which was played by an adult too), take their places back in line.   Then the Leading Player starts looking through the line for another candidate...  He picks a new "Pippin"... and the cycle starts all over again...

Fade to black...

Or something like that.

I had a very detailed e-mail sent to me about the London ending, but that was two laptops ago, so...

You're very welcome, DR MattH.

Just remember, that most fried foods - well, non-animal-based ones - are usually, well, should be, cholesterol free.  As a son of a Registered Dietitian...

But again, just because a food is "Cholesterol Free" does not mean it is also "Fat Free" or "Low in Fat" (or "Low In Calories").  Yes, potato chip bags may have started touting that they were "A Cholesterol Free Food" a few years, but they always were!  -Unless they were fried in beef tallow.  And I still laugh when I see that cereals tout their cholesterol-free status - Did cereals at one time contain chunks of beef and pork?  Ewww!

Feel Better Vibes, DR Ron!

My sinuses finally started draining yesterday - which is a good thing for me, since my sinuses tend to stay clogged up... which leads to sinus headaches and sinus infections.

*A trick I've used to clear things up - and I can't remember who passed this onto me - is to drink a couple of sips of hot tea/coffee..even just hot water.  Then follow that right away with a couple of sip of ice cold water.  Then another few sips of the hot liquid.  It's sort of like a science experiment in your head - heat expands, cold contracts...

Or something like that.

At Easter time, I like marshmallow Peeps, but I like them when they are stale after sitting out of their packaging in the Easter basket for a few days.

Me too!  *And do you put them in the microwave too and watch them "inflate"?
;)

Quote

They're actually quite good.  And very rich.  I was amazed the first time I saw that segment too - There's no way she can cram all that stuff into that pan?!?!?  But...

When I made them, I used a slightly larger pan - I just didn't want them that thick/high.  They were very good, but unlike traditional Rice Krispie Treats, they're definitely meant to be eaten one a time, rather than a couple in one sitting.  Martha Stewart Living also had some other variations published in its pages.  The cover of that issue had a tower of the various "treats" on it.  What was interesting - and tasty - were corn-syrup rather than marshmallow based.

Well, if the oil is at the right temperature, and the batter is properly applied, then the any "fishiness" in the oil should be minimal.

As for the Mars Bars...  You are correct, DR Rodzinski!  But you do have the option of selecting the British (no nuts) or the American (with nuts) at the Chip Shop.  *And they serve their Fried Twinkies with a raspberry coulis - a perfect complement to the "goo".

I was actually a little disappointed to find that A Salt & Battery in the Lower East Side does not do the fried candy bars.  However, in it's place, they do this deep-fried, chocolate and banana sandwich topped with ice cream and more chocolate sauce.

Hmmm.... Potato Sticks (or Stix)!

Ever get one of those Cuban and/or Puerto Rican steak sandwiches where they put those on/in the sandwich?  When I was in Houston, the menu said the sandwich came with a bed of "fried potatoes".  And when the platter came to my table, the fried potatoes were Potato Sticks - which are fried potatoes.  I was thinking I was going to get french fries...  In any case, it was quite a good sandwich, and those potato sticks added a great crunch to the sandwich.  *They also act as the salt for the sandwich too.  **And, yes, I did research this after I had that first sandwich.

That's sort of new too.  *Although, "but happy" has been in every production of the show I've ever done.  So...  ???

Like I sort of mentioned, this "new ending" basically depends on the conceit/concept of treating everyone on stage as pawns in the Leading Player's game.  When I first heard about it, it didn't sit too well with me, but the more I thought about it, the more I liked it.  It really adds heightens the sinister edge or the show.

I'm sitting here grading finals and listening to the Broadway Radio Show, which is a break with tradition.  I usually put on Bernard Herman's score to Psycho when grading finals.  Puts me in the proper mood.

And now to a problem with the Radio Show.  It played through to "Bye Bye Blackbird", and then it went to Donald's commentary on My Favorite Musicals of the 60's, with him saying we had just heard Barbra Streisand and Sidney Chaplin.  Anyone else have that problem?

I like my Leading Player on the sinister side, too.  Not as blatant as Booth in Assassins, but there has to be a dark side, and a seductive one at that.

I wonder if younger audiences today are as effected by the finale of Pippin as those who were around in the 70's.  Acts of self-immolation occurred and were reported on much more frequently at the time, and I'm sure this had some kind of resonance with the audiences then.  I imagine that young people today would wonder why Pippin would even consider such an act of self-expression.

ELKHART, Ind. - A crane vending machine can be frustrating enough when you’re trying to snatch a little stuffed toy from its steely clutches. Imagine if the prize it’s denying you is your own 3-year-old son.

James Manges II managed to climb up the chute and inside one of the machines Thursday, swinging around for an hour amid the plush toys he coveted before firefighters freed him.

James’ mother, Danielle Manges, said they had paid an early morning visit to a Wal-Mart in this northern Indiana city because he had been sick and was sleeping odd hours. After she denied him money to play the vending-machine game, he threw a juice box and climbed into the machine while his mother picked it up.

“Within two seconds he had climbed through the hole, into the chute and pushed the door shut so we couldn’t get him out,” she said.

At first, Manges thought it was funny: “He was playing with all the toys and hanging from the bar like a monkey.”

She even bought a disposable camera to take pictures, as other shoppers did. But she soon became upset when Wal-Mart employees said they did not have a key to let James out.

Firefighters removed the back of the machine to free James — who went home empty-handed.

“He definitely didn’t get a toy after that,” Manges said.

Did any of you Indian based DR's hear about this?

Ah, FECUNDITY!

-Ah, reminds me of that marriage vows from Maltby & Shire's Closer Than Ever that uses the word "fecund".   I think it was the first - and only - time I've heard that word used in a song.

A quick Google gives a gaggle:

Quote
I WANT EVERYTHING
        Cracker
...
You are deep inside this fecund swamp
Or let it be your beating heart
You’re deep inside this FECUND swamp
You call us in our tiny boats

Quote
SAFFRON'S CURSE
Cradle of Filth
...
She schemes of growing power and the lengths sucked hard to get it
I dream of being God but ever living to regret it
Our FECUND nature decrees that Jesus wept come for
The Devil on Her knees

Quote
MEDUSA AND HEMLOCK
Cradle of Filth

In the Samhain mist
We lay in welcome by the western gate
With the five fold kiss
For every soul returning
From the FECUND abyss
Where nature's travesties congregate
With a stone cold wish
To see the wicker man burning

Well, Google gives ten pages of references, all from rock, rap, etc. and many unsuitable to this here family site.

And not one of them rhymes FECUND with second.  Now that is what I would do with the word, yes I would.

To nobody second,
I'm certainly FECUND,
A true philanthropist.

On the food front, we stayed at a Holiday Inn in Westlake which is about 20 minutes from downtown Cleveland. We decided to drive along lake Erie  towards Cleveland until we found a place to eat. We happened to just notice this small pizza place with very little parking. We stopped and went in.  It was called Danny Boy's Perfectly Frank Pizzeria and was decorted with mostly Frank Sinatra memorabilia. They even have Sinatra trivia every Tuesday and Thursday night. We got two orders of Garlic Bread to start and it was thick and covered with lots of cheese. So good! We ordered one of their specialty pizzas (Chicken Alfredo) which was absoutely delicious. It had tomato mushroom, chicken, and I can't remember what else on it, but I would highly reccomend it if you ever find yourself in Rocky River, Ohio. You might have to ask some locals for directions because it is easy to miss. It was a good 20 minute wait but it was worth it!

Was Guy Haines going along for this trip?  I thought he only traveled by train.

And maybe not even that, these days.

Besides, it's my theory that it was Haines who called the airport and insisted on having a wheelchair-accessable seat reserved, causing our esteemed BK all those problems prior to leaving the ground.

I'm afraid the selection at my soda/candy/newsstand/general store downstairs was disappointing.  Aside from a rather large variety of power bars, everything else was pretty standard fare.  I did pick up a pack of Goetze's "Original" Caramel Creams.  I wonder how these would taste deep fried.

Hmm....

And since my father just bought a new deep-fryer...

Hmm...

I'm guessing it would be the type of thing where you'd have to place them in the freezer or fridge before frying them so that they don't completely turn to goo in the hot oil.

And I'm thinking of a crumb type coating - maybe with crushed pecans and graham crackers.

Hmmm...

Citronelle is famous for their "Hot Chocolate Truffles".  The chef coats them in bread crumbs and sugar, then fries them until they get a nice, delicate crust.  One bite, and.... :D

For instantly rotting teeth, try the standard Rice Krispie treat recipe, but replace the Rice Krispies with Fruity Pebbles.  I suggest cutting fairly small pieces, but I must admit I rather enjoy this ridiculous sugar rush.

I think that would be an excellent idea. One thing about Rex's death puzzles me. They knew the heart medication wasn't having the effect on his heart that they wanted, but why didn't they notice that the medication wasn't in his system (since the jealous pharmacist was not filling the prescription properly)?

They noticed the increase in potassium (which probably makes them suspect Bree of trying to poison him and will probably lead to a long, drawn out plot strand next season), but why didn't they notice the medication wasn't in his bloodstream? It's the first thing I would have thouight they'd notice.

TOD - A couple of people have mentioned stale marshmallow Peeps.  I like those, along with stale jelly beans and stale fig newtons.

Another confectionary oddity that I like are Modjeskas, a marshmallow pillow covered in caramel.  They are named for Polish actress Helena Modjeska, who so enchanted a Louisville, KY, confectioner that he asked permission to rename his "Caramel Biscuits" in her honor.  This was after he saw her performance in A Doll's House at the McCauley Theatre in 1883.  Modjeska was the real-life model for the actress character in Susan Sontag's novel In America.  When my book group met to discuss that book, we ate these candies.

I still think it's cool!

However, I do wish the old "toys" they would include in the box would come back.  I know it's a safety issue now, but the little stickers and temporary tattoos just don't cut it.  IMHO.

My favorite candy is not store-bought.  My favorite candy is the fudge you get when you make it using the recipe on the side of the Hersheys Cocoa can.  My mother adds a few tablespoons of peanut butter in the final stir and it's TDF!!!!!!!!!!

I didn't want to comment on last night's DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES since DR MattH had not viewed it yet.

Anyhow SPOLERS FOR LAST NIGHT's SHOW for anyone else who hasn't watched it yet.

I was actually very underwelmed by the death.  We were trying to predict who it might be last week.  And Rex was the most boring.  I almost wish they hadn't been hyping a death on the show.

Also, you guys who were guessing the outcome really made the finale scenes pretty boring (since you got everything right). :)

Wow. Impressive!  While i'm sure most people were stunned, because you guys had guessed the end, it was not suprising.

Also, I thought the show just sort of left things hanging. I was waiting for a true cliffhanger.  Instead of the plumber just standing outside the door. I thought he should have walked in, seen zach with the gun at susan and been like "stop it, i am your father".  End.  Well that is how I would have done it!

The Walkin' Taco - Basically a Frito Pie served in the bag of Fritos

Jose, what is a Frito pie (or for Mr. Orr, what is a Frito pi?)?

DR Elmoore3003 and DR Jed:  I take it the references to "cheap" porn aren't monetary ones.

How the heck did I get involved in this?

Not that I mind, of course, just that I think my taste would be a bit different than Larry's et al (and, based on his e-mail comments, certainly different from George!). :D

Yes Jed, you are probably correct that our tastes in porn would be different. ;) Not that there's anything wrong with that! (a Seinfeld reference ;D)

I swear, you mention cheap porn and you're branded for life!

I don't watch DH, but I've seen and heard enough that I wonder if this Rex guy actually is dead.  Wasn't his death only announced over the phone to the Marcia Cross character?

:o I never thought of that!  Ooo (ooO spelled backwards), our plot doth thicken even more!

Hi folks!  Not much to say tonight.

Can't say I've ever watched porn as in bought/rented it.  Some of todays movies have seemed very much like porn to me.

Snacks.  You guys have already mentioned most of my strange ones.  My newest is that I've fallen in love with Matza.  One of the ladies at work brought me some to try that she had left over from Passover and I can't get enough of it!

I'm off of the onions which is a good thing.  I can't handle the salt.

My father was (and may still be) addicted to this stuff:

PENOCHE
The materials needed are:
two cups of brown sugar
1/2 cup of milk
1 tablespoon of butter
1/2 cup of pecan meats
a teaspoon of vanilla.

Put the sugar and milk into a saucepan and stir until the sugar dissolves. After it has boiled for ten minutes, test it. If it forms a soft ball in cold water or if the candy thermometer reads 240', remove from the fire.

Stir in the butter, the chopped nuts and vanilla. When it is cool, cut into squares. If you want to vary the penoche, use one Tablespoon of peanut butter instead of the nut meats.

Or Rex and Mary Alice could narrate in a dialogue...

(And I haven't been watching the show; I'm gonna wait for the DVD set.)

Everybody, SING!

The Internet is for porn
The Internet is for porn
Why you think the Net was born?
Porn! Porn! Porn!

(I seriously doubt that we'll be playing the Avenue Q cast disc for the grandlads any time soon.  Their father might appreciate it, though...)

DR Jed:  Sorry.

As for DH:  I think Rex AND Mary Alice ought to narrate.

I thought the ending totally wonderful...words, or a gun shot, would have added nothing to the suspense I feel for the coming season.

I wasn't at all convinced Rex would be the one...I thought for sure it would be Paul.   Bree now will be, as DRMattH has predicted, on the hook for poisoning Rex.  But if anyone ever bothers to do a thorough workup on the tissues/blood samples, she will be vindicated.  I want to see George get what's coming to HIM.

Good Evening!

My father ended up firing up the grill tonight for dinner - a couple of NY strips, and some hamburgers.  My brother, Mike, came over with his son and daughter, and we all had a very nice sit down dinner.  -My first sit down family dinner in a long time.

After dinner, we all watched some "Jeopardy" - Ultimate Tournament of Champions this week.  And then the beginning of "Fear Factor".

It was newlywed night on "Fear Factor".  The "eating" stunt was truly gross tonight, but, then again, it always is.  But I do have to say that the husbands on tonight's show made for some mighty fine eye candy.

;)

I say "penuche", and you say "penoche"...

:)

Penuche was one of the first candy recipes I remember trying out of one of mom's cookbooks.  It seemed fairly easy to make.  And, to this day, I'm still amazed that at the age of 10 or 11, that I did not burn myself while making the stuff - or any other confection - where I had to test for the various "ball stages" by dropping the hot syrup in cold water.

And, of course, Alton Brown featured a recipe for penuche on his fudge show, I believe.

He said "Fecundity's under the undies!"

Anyone ever hear the original score Stephen Schwartz wrote when the show was known as "Pippin, Pippin" five years before the Broadway version with a book by Ron Strauss and a score by "Lawrence Stephens"?

I'm finally back from a very long day.  Must write the notes and get to bed as I must be up very early for our session.  I'm quite concerned about Vinnie - we know he checked in for sure, but Jonathan left him four messages to meet us at Joe Allen, which he didn't return, there was no message from him on my hotel phone re what time we're going tomorrow, and I got his voice mail when I called.  Worrisome.

As for Il Divo, I think there is more demand for "legit" pop singing in Europe rather than in America. Anyone with a real voice is branded as "classical" or "Broadway" and dismissed by America's youth.

But I could see them having a big following in Europe even among teens and twenties.

DR Ron, don't have ANY remorse about the RIP for Rex. I had predicted it, and I was going to watch the show anyway. I don't go looking for spoilers for shows, but if I run across them in my internet travels, I don't mind, especially a whole day after the episode aired. You can't hold on to info forever.

I will miss Steven Culp if Rex is indeed dead. I enjoyed his and Bree's prickly relationship.

DR Matt, have you ever taped/DVR'ed a number of episodes of a particular series, only to fall so far behind in viewing them that you decided to give up on the series?  That happened to me with both Once and Again and Chicago Hope.

Watvching JUMBO with Miss Doris Day.  It's really too bad that she didn't do a dramatic role opposite Stephen Boyd, they have terrific chemistry in their scenes.

Question:  What #&^$ is that note that Doris and Martha sing at the end of "Why Can't I?" or is my hearing bad?
