Well, you've read the notes, the notes were in the underworld with Orpheus and BK, and now it is time for you to post until the underworld cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: AMENABLE!
-
Nice poster, BK. I wonder who the mystery special guest is!
-
Well, it's bed time.
Have a good day, all!
-
Good morning, friends.
-
Good morning, all!
-
I slept rather well. Thatch and Annabelle don'y leave me much room since they think - no matter what I say - it's their bed. I showqed them the invoices for the bed frame and mattress, but they refuse to believe me.
-
I have an Amazon Fresh delivery arriving today, so that shoots down my doing laundry, so I will do that tomorrow morning.
-
BK, the big can-can tune in Orpheus in the Underworld is "le galop infernal"; the French lyrics are:
Ce bal est original d'un galop infernal donnons tous le signal!
Vive le galop infernal! donnons le signal d'un galop infernal!
Amis, vive le bal!
La la la la la!

Maybe it's corporations winning, but it really feels like life is just more convenient because of Amazon Fresh. Except for the name Amazon all over the bags, they feel like the old-fashioned deliveries we used to get decades ago.
And I just found out a few days age the 7-11 on 42nd across from the Port Authority is in Postmates. So even when Amazon Fresh is out of something, the 7-11 is retail price but younger have to do without anything.

lene[/i] and La Vie Parisienne. La Belle Helene, like Orpheus in the Underworld, was written for Offenbach's own theatrical troupe, The Théâtre des Variétés, eut La Vie Parisienne was written for a Parisian theatre company, Théâtre du Palais-Royal, with Offenbach's stipulation that they use coloratura soprano, Zulma Bouffar, in the leading role of the glove maker, Gabrielle.
La Belle Helene has recveived several complete recordings. In the early 1950s, Rene Leibowitz recorded two excellent complete recordings of Orpheus, in its original version, and La Belle Helene, and they may still be my favorite recordings. The EMI-Mady Mesple recording of Orpheus is an abridged recording of the later, expanded version of the piece.
In stereo, there are at least four recordings of La Belle Helene:
The earliest is the French EMI, conducted by Jean-Pierre Marty; I like it very much, but the cover photo is ridiculous.
Angel-EMI produced an over-operatic recording with Jessye Norman, tubby sound and too operatic, and the score has small cuts. I hate it.
Accord's recording with la formidable Jane Rhodes as Helen is from an actual performance, so it's a cast album. I love it.
The latest recording, also on DVD, is from Laurent Pelly's production. I like the recording, which includes an Act Two aria for Paris that was cut, and hate the DVD.
-
Curiously, La Vie Parisienne has had only one complete recording that I know of, and I wish it were better. We'll get to it in a moment. There have been at least two complete Pariser Leben recordings in German.
My first recording, a LP purchased at the now-dead French Bookshop at Rockefeller Center in Dec. 1966, was the excerpts conducted by Marcel Cariven, got most of the bif numbers and I'm still very fond of it.
In the early 1960s the Barrault-Renaud Company took La Vie Parisienne back to the actors, so their recording is vocally rough - except for the fantastic Suzy Delair as Metella, the whore with the heart of gold - but full of theatricality and character voices, a great original cast recording. The score is not complete, but it's wonderful.
Then EMI-Angel produced their "big" complete recording. The cast is French, but it isn't as funny as I'd like and the sound is boomy.
-
There are three recordings of of Orpheus in the Underworld in English, one the complete original version with additions from the later, expanded version, conducted by my friend John Owen Edwards. It isn't bad.
Around 1989 the Enhlish National Opera produced a new version that I saw in Los Angeles, summer of 1990. I do not remember who did the English adaptation, but I do remember that I disliked it.
Im the early 1960's, the Sadler's Wells Opera [rpduced several Offenbach works in English translations by Geoffrey Dunn, and EMI recorded excerpts from each. I wish he'd recorded them complete. EMI has released the three LPs on two CDs and I recommend it highly.
EMI=France has done the same with their excerpts recordings.
-
Good morning, all.
-
Well ORPHEUS IN THE UNDERWORLD is the title of the second volume of my memoirs.
Those are nice covers DR ELMORE. The English National Opera version almost looks like a Dr. Seuss book.....and the outfit on that guy on the Sadler's Wells needs to be just a few inches shorter to really pique my interest....
-
I will be interested to hear about MR BK's experience at the Hollywood Show!
-
Well we continue apace...
A cast member was vacationing with his mother in Florida.....said mother fell down and broke her arm....they are coming home today. She will be wearing a cast and he has dropped OUT of the cast.
The director has chosen to play Mr Henderson, the IRS man.....
I guess I will go ahead and book the ads. Of course the people who are insisting it must be done are NOT the people who have to call and CANCEL said ads and get all the grief from our ad reps.....
-
BUT other than that - yes I had a very nice birthday.....three score + 10 + 1.
-
My neighbor Ann, who went to the post office for me yesterday, told me last night that she would return my debit card and receipt this morning when she left for school, but I think she forgot me!
-
Good morning!
-
Ann just stopped by and we had a short but lovely visit. I am so lucky to have her and Jen around.
-
Good morning, all.
-
Another hot one, but it's the last day in this current heat wave.
I had to go out and help somebody move some things, and I'm a mess. This will be at least a two-shower day.
-
Good morning.
-
Good neighbors are such a blessing.
-
Good neighbors are such a blessing.
they are indeed.
-
I am finished with everything I had to get done this morning before leaving.
-
J.B. is ensconced at the Tweet Suite. He was not happy.
-
My wearing my mask might have made it worse. He doesn't understand masks.
-
Let's move on ...
-
Two!

Got my annual flood insurance payment made.
-
I made it five minutes ago and it's already cleared the checking account. Wow.

Here's the latest update on Pen Farthing's attempts to get his 200 dogs and catys and staff safely out of Afghanistan. I am so worried for them

Since the drive back from Louisville, I haven't made enough time to listen to my book, The Six: The Lives of the Mitford Sisters. It's due back tomorrow and I have less than two hours left. I don't know if I'll be able to finish it. But I'm taking my earbuds and will give it a try. Since it's a new book, I don't know if there's a waiting list or not.

I can't imagine there's a waiting list for the Mitford sisters.

Fascinating story, though. The fascist sisters who were friends of Hitler, the communist sister, the forgotten brother and the novelist all make for one weird family. Friends of Winston Churchill and the Kennedys, etc.
-
I'm off.
-
:)
-
DR TCB I was hoping the pain specialist might have suggested something more helpful than your normal pain management.
-
I made it five minutes ago and it's already cleared the checking account. Wow.
And of course, if anyone wants a refund, it takes forever! :P
-
I love Hudson Talbott's dinosaur books. I wonder if he would be interested in illustrating Annabelle & Thatch?
-
:)
-
I made it five minutes ago and it's already cleared the checking account. Wow.
My Con Edison utilities bill usually clears the day after I mail it.
-
Finally, we have our car home.
-
The chemical smell is rather bad.
-
DR Jennifer you would not be happy.

I'm up, I'm up - just under nine hours of sleep.

The story doesn't mention that his staff was with him :(
-
Well, the Pen Farthing news and this new item just perked up my day!

Made it to Fort Clark. It’s very, very hot and dry.
-
I went for a walk before almost wilting in the heat.
-
I also got to listen to most of the rest of The Six.
-
Well, chalk down Hudson Talbott. It was a kind rejection.
-
On my walk, I looked up and saw three deer in the yard across the street from where I was walking. They stared at me and I just stared right back.
I did get a picture.
-
Well, chalk down Hudson Talbott. It was a kind rejection.
I think you asked him about three years ago.
-
I’m thinking you need to reach out to a college student, Elmore.
-
Let’s move on …
-
Three!
-
PAGE THREE DANCE!!!!!
-
I’m thinking you need to reach out to a college student, Elmore.
That's what they told Gov. Cuomo and look what happened!
-
Well, chalk down Hudson Talbott. It was a kind rejection.
I think you asked him about three years ago.
Nope. This was my first inquiry.
-
I’m thinking you need to reach out to a college student, Elmore.
Nope. I need someone with a sense of humor and whimsy, but I would prefer an illustrator with is familiar with Manhattan and a cockeyed viewpoint.
-
I still want Hillary Knight, dammit.
-
Well, I ordered out tonight because I had too much going on to cook for myself. I love the cheeseburgers from Chirping Chicken.
-
Sorry I have been E&T.
-
The new job starts Monday and I’m trying to Get Things Done
-
I frittered away my time off
-
I also had a wake and funeral for a friends Mom
-
And I got embroiled in my Moms new fence saga
-
EXCELLENT VIBES YOU HAVE A VERY NICE FIRST DAY!
-
Back to work
-
Will try and catch up later
-
A symptomatic, unvaccinated elementary school teacher in Marine county, CA took her mask off to read to the students. On top of others she infected, 50% of her students got covid. Of course they too spread it to their families. Fortunately no one has been hospitalized.
SYMPTOMATIC! >:(
-
Not surprising there were far more cases with the masked students sitting in the front of the class than in the back.

-
Hello, everyone.
-
I had an acupuncture appointment today, then stopped for some Indian food on the way home.
-
I meant to mention that in the Yellow Cab that took me to my procedure yesterday was a plexiglass surround for the driver, separating him from the passengers. I'd never seen this before, but I certainly think it's a good idea. He seemed to be happy with it.
-
And that concludes Procedure Week at HHW.

Finally, we have our car home.
At last! What an ordeal for you! I hope the smell dissipates quickly and all is well.

It's a little late for travel vibes, but vacation vibes seem appropriate. Enjoy your stay!

If I can recall the name of the guy I used once in DC I'll let you know. Very talented fellow, definitely cockeyed. Don't know if he knows Manhattan, though.
-
EXCELLENT VIBES YOU HAVE A VERY NICE FIRST DAY!
Ditto. Vibes you settle in nicely and it's a good fit.
-
That "teacher" should be prosecuted for assault.
Something.

What did you get? I want to eat vicariously.

Thank you. We had the rental car for 46 days :o

Vegetable buriyani, which I'd never had there before, and papadums. It was quite good.

Good thought. No, I didn't think of it. The ride was arranged through my insurance, as most of my rides are. For those that are not I usually use Uber. I suppose I could contact Yellow Cab and ask which drivers have that arrangement in their cabs. Not all do; the driver who brought me home did not.

Vibes the surgery was a success!
I believe the surgery did what was intended, which was to rid me of the "secondary cataract" in my right eye. Everything is much brighter; it's as if I turned up the brightness level on my screen. However, some things are somewhat worse. We've identified four things wrong with my vision. Yesterday's procedure addressed one of the four. We're monitoring things. I'm hoping that things will settle in a bit and perhaps improve on their own. I'm also still a believer in Natural Ophthalmics products.

I will pass on the papadam. I will have to imagine what the buriyani tastes like. It looks good (had to google what it is).

I was able to drive today, thankfully. My eyes are very slow to undilate and didn't look normal until late last night. As we age our eyes lose elasticity and need more time to adapt.

Oh belated birthday wishes to our dear JRand. I am sorry I missed it and I hope it was very happy

I have not caught up

Heard from Linda, who is staying an extra day. It took the whole day to clean and finish filling the dumpster.
-
She worked around the photographer, who got some beautiful shots of the place.
-
With all the rugs ripped up, the place looked better than I have ever seen it.
-
The hardwood floors were gorgeous. Everything seemed spacious.
-
Linda sent a photo of the kettle with a message saying it was the last thing to hit the dumpster.
-
The house goes on the market tomorrow morning.
-
The asking price is $325,000, which is $25,000 more than she thought when Mom signed the contract.
-
The agent, who is retired, sold five houses in the past month. She’s expecting a bidding war.
-
Obviously, I hope she gets it.
-
I’m tired and it’s late.

Before I go …

Onward!

Five!

Finished with my viewing and listening to Die Meistersinger - very tuneful.

He dropped out because his mother broke her arm, or was it just because he didn’t want to rehearse any longer. He should have waited another week and he could have taken advantage of all that sympathy when the show is cancelled.

Agreed!

The asking price is $325,000, which is $25,000 more than she thought when Mom signed the contract.
That reminds me that I got a notice from original mortgage company that my condo is now estimated at almost $100,000 more than what I paid for it.
-
The agent, who is retired, sold five houses in the past month. She’s expecting a bidding war.
Earlier this year, a friend sold her house for $50,000 above the asking price! And she told me that someone she knows sold her house for $65,000 over!!

Will no one answer my question about John?
I'm very sorry, Tom, but I can't answer it because I don't remember what he said. :-\
