Title: MEETING A NEW MUSICAL DIRECTOR
Post by: bk on September 06, 2021, 12:06:36 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes met a new musical director, and now it is time for you to post until the musical director cows come home.

To continue, after enjoying the delicious burgers, we went to McMenamin's in Centralia (https://www.mcmenamins.com/olympic-club).  He had a hard cider and I had a diet cola (not Coke or Pepsi brand) with lime.  We got to walk around the historical hotel (which has tours during the week, I guess) and then we left to come back to Olympia.

When David and I got back to Tumwater, he suggested that we go walking in one of the state parks in the area.  That sounded like a fun idea, so we got into his tiny Miata (he's got a pass for state parks) and we went to one.  I don't remember the name of it, but I took some pictures.  Here are a few:

Yes, it has double wings!  Here's one of the maps of the trail.  I think the longer trail that goes around everything is 1.1 miles.  We did the whole trail:

We had a great time and it was fun to ketchup.  David's birthday is next month, so I gave him his birthday present, which he says he'll wait until then to open it.  Then we hugged goodbye, then he left to go back to Seattle, and I went to my sister's to get my car back. :)

Today, the family is getting together at my mom's for lunch and card playing, and then a little later tonight, hopefully my friend Margo and I are going to see the movie, Free Guy, starring Ryan Reynolds.  We had plans to see it last week, but her dog watcher had to cancel at the last minute, and her dog can't be left alone.

Title: Re: MEETING A NEW MUSICAL DIRECTOR
Post by: bk on September 06, 2021, 02:51:46 AM
I've been Meadowlarking on YouTube and it is outrageously shocking how many people use my arrangement of the song. No one had EVER done it like we did it - it was my idea and Todd Ellison and I worked it out. Up until our recording the entire song had been done at one quick tempo - in the show and every singer. Period. I'd already recorded it that way, as written, with Liz Callaway so I wanted to do something completely different that would make it stand out. At that point, Judy Kuhn was going to sing it. The idea was to start it slow and go into tempo at the end of the second verse. It was unique and it worked great. Judy dropped out for uninteresting reasons and Susan Egan came in and did it. The opening vamp leading us into the song was MINE. And I remember our darling Jose trying to tell me that's the way it was in the show. Well, no, it wasn't. He sent me the pages of the score and there it was, just as I'd arranged it, sans the opening vamp. But that was NOT the original score, it was some revival done AFTER our album. Obviously, Stephen Schwartz liked it enough to use it for whatever production that was and I guess that's now the way it's done in the show. Would you not think perhaps a little credit should be given? Once? Acknowledgement? Once? And 90% of the versions that are sung on YouTube use our entire arrangement including the opening vamp, which means that someone did a takedown or got hold of our chart. I find it flattering and infuriating at the same time. Nothing to be done about it, but boy is it wrong for someone to just use someone else's arrangement and not give credit. The album credits on The Stephen Schwartz Album are not hard to read.

Last night I dreamed I was chased around the apartment building by a knife-weilding Frankenstein monster. I eluded him and escaped to the sidewalk. I wore pajamas and I was barefoot as I ran toward Broadway.
Title: Re: MEETING A NEW MUSICAL DIRECTOR

When I reached Broadway, I was no longer in Manhattan; I was in Middletown, Ohio, at the corner of Sutphin Street and Central Avenue. I came upon some children playing - two boys and a girl - and the four of us were pursued by the monster around various lawns. I remember that at one point the monster stabbed himself in the belly with the knife and there was a tall tree with a treehouse where we debated climving to safety.

Something happened thatr I clearly forget, but the monster ended up becoming friends with the children, and my dream turned into The Monster Squad.

I, too, subscribe to the mono Trouble in Tahiti as being the "right" one. I discovered the piece while still at school, or perhaps just after getting out of school, not sure.

(I wonder if I bought the vocal score from Patelson's or at de Keyser Music in Hollywood, because that would sure tell me. Damn it to hell. I like to remember those things.)

Anyhoo, I *think* that might have still been the only recording then. Either that, or I chose it because I knew of Beverly Wolff. I do know that a couple of others I've heard have lacked that special something.

I'm not a bleu cheese eater, but good cheese combinations can be wonderful. I always first and foremost remember a favorite breakfast sandwich that I believe had three. And if you haven't had a good four-(or more)-cheese macaroni, you haven't lived.

Vixmom -- you watched a Harold Lloyd short and liked it? And you hadn't seen any of his stuff before now? If I'm reading that correctly, you have some wonderful watching ahead of you.

I got into Harold Lloyd just a few years ago, when I got the opportunity to play a new score for The Freshman in a small professional orchestra. It was a one-time public showing and I wouldn't trade that experience for anything. Part of the thrill was getting to know the movie, which is a favorite now, and the Criterion edition is the only way to go.  Lloyd was one of the best.

I didn't report on my dream, at least the one I remember. It was one of the most outrageous Not Being Prepared For a Performance ones yet. I was playing this show, apparently it was just me on piano, and Act 2 of my score was missing. I got the director to print another copy, but as I looked through my binder, I found all of these scraps of paper and post-its with notes as to what still had to be rehearsed. Then I remembered I had barely even played some of these songs at all, and I wondered if I could look them over in the 30 minutes left before curtain. It became more hopeless with every passing moment, and it took a good minute or more upon awakening to realize that it had been a dream and I could let the relief flood over me.

DR Elmore — the live recording on YouTube of Boy Meets Boy is hard to listen to, sound quality wise, and rather hideous in its use of what sounds like a bad first generation synth keyboards, that I find it difficult to give it a fair shake. But your opinion of the show and score are warning enough that I feel I should steer us clear of it... all in spite of what a good guy Bill Solly must be, and that's too bad.

Another show being suggested for this slot is Dames at Sea. This is for the 2022 holiday period, but the theater doesn't require a holiday themed show, just something fun or festive and not requiring a large cast.

Dames At Sea is a better show than Boy Meets Boy but I foind the photos of the original off-Broadway production just a bit too intentionally trashy. I disliked the last inflated Broadway production, which I thought missed the attempt to make six performers seem like 600.  i hope the production can capture the campy feel of a 1930s film. Is the TV production on YouTube?

What's not to love, it's such a wholesome story:  "Boy meets boy, boy loses boy, and boy gets boy in the end."

And Mildred from New Brunswick leans over to her friend and says, "you see, I told you, they're gay."  This is the same Mildred who leaned over to her friend at "The Heiress" and said "you see, I told you, she's an heiress."  :)

Tonight I watched all the episodes of Outside the Box, both seasons, then went back and watched them all with the commentaries.

Most enjoyable. And hilarious.

Halloween charcuterie?

It’s more of a cheese, fruit and cookie board. I’ll take it.

Theater historian and writer Andy Propst has passed away - very young he was. He was a really nice guy.

Margo and I saw Free Guy, and we both liked it.  It's similar in style to Ready Player One, but the main characters aren't both players of the game.  Guy in Free Guy is actually part of the game (not much of a spoiler...you find that our fairly soon in the movie).

I’ve only ever seen small clips of his work, the one with the click tower usually

Michael K Williams died today at age 54.  The saddest part is that he was still using heroin at age 54.
