Title: THE LAST MAY DAY
Post by: bk on May 30, 2005, 11:59:41 PM
Well, you've read the notes, you know what's what and who's who and when's when, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - right now they're in parts unknown, crying "Mayday, Mayday."

And the word of the day is: CONTUMELY!

And now - Dino at the piano.

I have never heard of the word "CONTUMELY," nor have I ever heard of the show "The Selling of the President," which is the answer to the Unseemly Trivia Contest.  How do you winners find the answer??

As to the Topic of the Day:  I usually take it.  I don't think I've ever gotten mad enough to yell at someone, or even talk sternly to them...behind their back, yes, but not to their face (that I can remember).  I have fantasized about telling someone off, but by the time it actually gets to confronting someone about whatever "it" is, I can't remember what I was going to say.  I hate it when that happens. :-\

Also, I can't hold a grudge.  I've never been able to.  After time, I just let it go.  I may not ever have respect for someone, or I may try to avoid having to work with someone (especially in local theater tryouts), but I just can't hold on to that kind of hate...or even dislike.  Sometimes I feel like it's a curse.  I want to yell at someone, but I can't (a Little Shop of Horrors reference).  Maybe someday.

I'm up.  Why?

Because I can't breathe.  Why?

Because I spent the entire weekend cleaning the apartment.  Why?

Because I wanted to deep-down clean the carpets using my new Hoover Steam Vac.  Why?

Because my carpets haven't been properly cleaned in nearly 8 years.

To clean carpet in my apartment means moving everything around...unplugging everything and relocating it...and then cleaning...and then waiting for it to dry...and then doing the edges and wiping down walls for dust...and then moving things back...and then moving other things and doing it all over again to get every square foot.

And I've stirred up so much dust that my sinuses simply cannot handle it any more.  Now that I'm virtually done, my sinuses have crapped out on me.

I cannot breathe, I'm telling you.  And my only recourse is to sit up and try to relax my breathing and to be calm.

So I'm sitting here typing.

CONTUMELY is a wonderful word.  Wonderful enough that Mr. Noel Coward used it in a lyric for After the Ball.  Vinnie and I were laughing all day and using it whenever we could.

Why am I up?  I am glad MR BK thought BLACK TIGHT KILLERS was wacky fun.  I certainly agree and thought the production design and color photography were wonderfully Psycho-delic.

Nobody but NOBODY can come busting out like Miss June (You too can have a lovely bust) Wilkinson - whose ads in the back of movie magazines probably made more money for Mark Eden than she ever did for any producer of one of her movies.

Hmmmm.....well I used to get angry at people.  I used to spend time on grudges and fighting back.

And then - and it took me a LONG time to realize this - that these are all such a waste of ENERGY.   And so, if someone is rude or does something hurtful to me - and it happens now and then - I remove myself from said person.  Not in an obvious or obnoxious way, but I have no more contact with him/her than is necessary or accidental.

There have been a few people like that, and I am better off without them.  And I am sure they are happier without me in their lives as well.

How nice for you, how nice for Eve, how nice for everybody.

Re: the TOD.  I'll always confront the person on any injury I think has been done me.  I expect redress and/or apology.  If the injury is serious enough, even if I forgive, I never forget.

There are those incidences where the breach is such, that no redress or apology is sufficient.  I am a Capricorn.  We do not look at revenge so much as revenge, but rather sternly regard it as simple justice.

While I do not let things eat at me, nor do I actively seek or plot revenge, if an opportunity arrives to undermine, discredit, and expose someone who has wronged me, I won't pass it by.  I won't do this through any underhanded means.  I'll do it openly and straight-on by speaking the truth about my experience with them.   I have no qualms about exposing someone who has wronged me and expressing my low regard for them.

I cannot think of any incidence where someone has broke with me or grievously hurt me and mine in which they were ever absolved and let back in my good graces.  Life is too short and my life too rich with genuine friends and likeable acquaintances to give disappointments second chances.

But by the same token, I am very accepting of most of my friends' weaknesses and flaws and do not put undue expectations on certain aspects of their nature.

There is a great line, spoken by Don DeFore in a terrific Joel McCrea Western called RAMROD, where the femme fatale, Veronica Lake, says:  "You don't like anything about me, do you?"  Defore replies: "You're all right.  You're like a horse or a dog or a man or any other woman.  Once I understand you, you're all right."

That's me.  I'm fairly low-key and easy-going and will accept a pal's shortcomings as long as he or she brings more joy and loyalty into my life than grief and distrust.  But once you break your shovel with me, you don't want me for an enemy because, while I won't necessarily be an overt enemy, I'm a very patient one with a long memory who knows how to savour his moment.

I watched Mystic River on WOWOW last night and enjoyed it. For some reason, I feel some different mood from other American(Hollywood) movies. I don’t know why and/or which scene and/or what character made me so…I just felt some very complicated and profound anger of human-beings. Painful but nice film, I think.

Good morning, DRHisaka!  I'm starting to feel chipper again, and today's my attempt to resume my ordinary weekly schedule.  I have my fingers crossed/

DRJRand54, I picked up LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA yesterday, and I've just put it on the CD player.

DRGeorge, there is a glorious song "Someday" in Friml's THE VAGABOND KING.  Also, "it says so in the script" is a ME AND JULIET reference ("It's Me" verse).

DRRonPulliam, I hope your sinuses and allergies are on the mend.  I hope you have something in your medicine cabinet to help you out.

TOD:  I've been a grudge holder, and much to my chagrin, I've seen several friends die before any sort of truce could attempted.  My usual theory is this:  kick me once and I'll forgive you; kick me after that and rot in hell.  If I feel I've wronged someone, there's nothing I won't try to make amends.  A few years ago, I accidentally offended one of the new "theatre composers" that AMERICAN THEATRE fauns over by not raving outrageously over one of his new songs.  He'd been telling me how fantastic it was, and when he played it and sang it, I thought "once again, every note of the scale in every chord and not much of a tune," which I didn't say, but he later - repeatedly - asked me what I thought of his new song.  Finally, I said I thought it was nice, but I wanted to say "sometimes a C chord is all you need."  After that, he never returned my calls, no matter how many overtures I made.  I did what I could, and I'm sorry the friendship is over, but bruised egos are the worst to repair.

'morning!  I'm here early - I work 12-9 today, but have to take DS Rob back to UC after his fun weekend home to celebrate HS graduation with 4 of his friends.

TOD - I'm a "flight, not fight" kind of person.  From time to time, though, I find myself being the sounding board for both sides of a conflict.  Someone told me once that, professionally, I'd make a good mediator, but being in that role just makes my hands break out.

con·tu·me·ly Pronunciation (knt-m-l, -ty-, -tm-l) noun; plural-con·tu·me·lies

1. Rudeness or contempt arising from arrogance; insolence.

2. An insolent or arrogant remark or act.

[From the Middle English contumelie, from Old French, from Latin contumlia; akin to contumx, insolent.]

I am back at work and already slightly confused. I looked for a column I usually read in the Monday on-line version of the paper (the New York Times) and then realized it was Tuesday and that I had read it in the paper YESTERDAY when I bought a copy and read it over breakfast at the Diner!!! It may be a long week.

I have learned over the years to try and let things go. I am not always successful but I'm getting better at it. It really isn't worth my time to spend energy getting angry and holding grudges. I do have a temper (which very few people have seen) and can have an outburst that would surprise many people, but I have learned to keep that part under control. Getting angry is one thing but screaming outburst aren't worth the time anymore.

Off to work. Later, gaters.

Crap!  I sent all the correct answers to the Unseemly Trivia Contest Saturday night and I was aghast when I did not see my name amongst the winners this morning.  I was about to demand--demand, I tell you!--an apology.

However, I just double checked to see that I sent it out to the correct address and found that I had left off the ".com".  So when the e-mail did bounce back, I gave it no thought since BK said that that might happen.

Grrrrr.  Stupid cut and paste!  Stupid!  Stupid!  Stupid!

TOD: It depends on the situation.  I used to have outbursts but now I tend to complain bitterly to someone who cares and then let it go.  if it is someone whom I can walk away from then I do.

This is actually a very timely topic for me as there has been some unpleastaness in my troop.  The person who dropped the troop in my lap and whose child has been  giving mine some grief has now managed to cause a schism in the troop.  I am the only mother in the troop who works full time, I am also the only one of the ones who do work who doesn't work right in town, in fact I have a 60 mile round trip commute every day.  Other people who said they would be available to help here and there would mysteriously  'forget" to show up.  This weekend has been the last straw so I have resigned as leader, and am araranging to have the Vixter transferred to another troop.

I take the high road, and I don't normally hold a grudge, but I won't stick around a person who treats me or others badly. I am very easy going. Of course there may be situations in which something would need to be done or said in response to a person's negative actions towards others but I always try to act like a mature adult, and I don't let too many things bother me...and in the rare instances that they do bother me I just call a buddy and gripe about it! LOL!

My reaction to being treated contumely depends entirely on the circumstances and personnel involved. I'd be willing to give a real friend a little slack.

However, I have to admit that though I don't got for redress, I also never forget and if the slight is serious enough, I never trust that person again, never put myself in a position where he can hurt me again. Oh, I won't make any outward show of disgust or mistrust, but I know in my heart that the person is the dregs and I wouldn't lift a finger to help him ever.

Wonder if I'll find any time myself today for DVDs or shows on the DVR (there are a couple still left). I did get some housekeeping chores done this morning and my workout also done, so I'm certainly having no trouble filling the time, but one longs to leisurely sit and watch a program without anything else buzzing around in my brain. As for the TOD, in the business a lot of us are in, people seem to hold grudges for quite a long time and usually we find that we can get along quite well without those people.  Personally, I like to mend all fences and bridges at some point in my life, or try to anyway.  There is one actor, however, who lied to me when auditioning for a show and he got in.  I had asked if anyone at the callback could read music, and he raised his hand.  At one point in the rehearsal process, he wasn't getting his harmony and I told him to go home and plunk it out on the piano.  He then told me that he couldn't because he didn't read music.  I'll never cast him again.    But the bottom line, I always try to mend fences and make things right.

BK's coming to Portland?  Oy.  Maybe I'd better steam clean my carpets.  ;)

TOD:  I do get very angry if I am wronged by someone repeatedly, but there is some strange karmic mechanism at work in my life that has been absolutely constant since I was a child:  I need do absolutely nothing to people who have wronged me and they get their comeuppance rather mightily without me having to lift a finger.  I don't want to sound too metaphysical about it, but I have seen this happen over and over again in my life and have learned to let the universe take care of those fools who think I'm to be trifled with.  :)

I have been quite E&T lately, and I do not feel sorry about it one bit!

It's all been circumstantial, this E&T business, what with grandladding and construction and other whatnot and whatever.  On the other hand, sometimes I find it helpful to take my leave of something that I enjoy, if just to regain my perspective and appreciation when I return.

I definately feel for DRRon, as I've had allergy problems over the past few days.  I've spent too much time on the Eastern Shore, where the pollens are nastier to me than the locals, and the digging going on next door has thrown all sorts of molds and crud into the air, so I too have had lots of breathing problems.  I suggest taking lots of showers, washing all the nastiness out of one's hair and off of one's skin, which helps a great deal.

TOD:  I used to be fast to anger and outbursts.  My problem was, I was usually angry and bursting because of a situation, and not intending to be angry at any person.  The person with whom I would outburst, however, often took it personally.  It took a lot of work on my part to hold my anger back, but once I learned how to do that I managed to keep a lot more friends.

This isn't to say that I don't get angry any more.  I do; i just hold it in.  I've also found that there is, indeed, that elusive thing called "karma."  Nice things will happen to nice people.  Rotten people who do rotten things have a much harder road to travel.  Sometimes karma can be very patient, so I've learned to be patient as well.

If someone I don’t know well treats me poorly I will either walk away or say something and then walk away.  Often I will rant for a few minutes, and that is the end of it.  One of my pet peeves is doing something nice for a stranger, such as holding a door open, without a thank you.  My response is to loudly say “you’re welcome”.  ;D
Title: Re:THE LAST MAY DAY
Post by: Jane on May 31, 2005, 08:55:41 AM
I tend not to choose my words carefully, so I have been told.  My brain thinks I’m saying something quite different.  Maybe that is why I don’t tend to carry grudges-no I have always been that way.  I like friends who come right out and clarify what I mean.

I have lost my temper more than I would like to admit, something I rarely do now and try to be understanding of others.  When friends have mistreated me (multiple times) I have worked hard to sort things out with them and make it right.  When these issues aren’t addressed, as at times I don’t when I should, eventually my feelings for the person will change and I find that sad.

When I was younger I had real issues letting people mistreat me.  I was far too passive.  For a few years I think I over compensated and became too defensive & didn’t care for my behavior.  I hope now I am somewhat balanced.

I try to look at both sides of the issue, decide what I did or said that might have unintentionally provoked the other person.  Then I take the best action I possibly can to make peace.  It doesn’t mean I will keep a friend close, but I walk away feeling good.

The troop is in my town, but I work 30 miles away from where I live which on Long Island means a 45 - 120 minute commute depending on the time of day and accidents and road construcution delays

So while the other moms either don't work at all, or work 10AM - 2 PM  jobs in town, I work a job that runs from 8:30 - 5:30 or later and have an additional 2 - 3 hours lost in commuting time - but THEY don't have time to pick up a  bottle of juice or a sleeve of paper cups but I am supposed to be planning all the meetings, controlling the books, buying all the supplies, setting up the meeting space (which I also obtained) and cleaning up after etc etc etc etc  There is one exception to all this, a wonderful woman who took on the thankless task of cookie mom and nut mom.

Anyway  I had it.  So I turned in my resignation and requested a troop change to a troop where there are parents who actually care and pitch in.  There is one I would very much like for her to join but it is quite large and I do not know if they will take another girl. If all else fails she can be an independent registered girl scout so she can still work on her badges and awards and do her community service projects.

On brighter notes:

We had a houseguest this weekend:  A dear friend of mine from college.  We met the first week of school and have remained very close for lo these (cough-cough) years.  Though he used to be an actor/dancer, he now heads an agency for fashion stylists/photographers, etc. that belonged to his late partner. After a detour as a sales manager for Merrill Lynch for several years.

At any rate, one of the lovely things we did over the weekend is take in the Geva production of A CHORUS LINE.  (Geva is our local regional theatre, and stands for -- for those who are curious -- Genesee Valley.)

At any rate, they usually cast out of NYC, which is all well and good.  And they have several "regulars," especially for the musicals.  These are people who are just this side of actual stardom, but certainly have reputations in the business.  Well, one of our "regulars" has returned, essaying the role of Cassie.  This is a twice Tony-nominated actress.  Vocally, she was fine, if not stellar.  Acting-wise, she was fine.  Just one problem:  She can't dance (an ersatz FOLLIES reference).

Oh, she can "move."  She could get by in her Tony nominated roles.  But she is ill-equipped to tackle "Music and the Mirror."  (And was huffing and puffing through the rest of the scene that follows her number.)

This was most certainly a case of Sheila being robbed of a job.

In other news, the Dear Partner and I will be sailing for Bermuda a week from this Saturday.  It's a vacation that is sorely needed, and marks our fourth visit to this beautiful island (Actually, a chain of islands.  Or archipelago, if you will.)

Busy, busy, busy.

I'm up, I'm up.

As soon as JMK and I confirm the dates, which I think we already have.  I'm hoping to see as many hainsies/kimlets as possible, both at the reading, and a special gathering.

Your posts on the topic of the day are wonderful.  I completely believe in karma, as those who've been on the site know well.  But, I also believe people should not get away with rude behavior, especially people who know you and profess to have some fondness for you.  I cannot just let that slide, and I don't.  As I said, I do give the person the chance to do the right thing, to apologize and explain themselves.  If that doesn't happen, then I will move swiftly to make that person as uncomfortable as I know how to do, and believe me, I know how to do it well.

DRGeorge, there is a glorious song "Someday" in Friml's THE VAGABOND KING.  Also, "it says so in the script" is a ME AND JULIET reference ("It's Me" verse).

I don't know THE VAGABOND KING, but when you mentioned the ME AND JULIET reference, I realized that I had another brain fart.  Lena Lamont doesn't say the word "script," she says "contract."  Ooops...yet again. ::)

We also watched Galaxy Quest over the weekend, again not great movie making but a really fun movie (especially for  Mr. Vixmom & me since a dear friend of ours used to run the Star Trek conventions in NYC and told us many amusing "backstage " stories, which we suspect the makers of the movie were also privy to).

The Vixter just liked it on its own merits.

The news in today's local paper:

17 year old boy beats Dad to death because dad complained that  son's friend was disrespectful to dad

12 year old girl strangles her mother to death with her bare hands, because Mom asked her to clean her room.

9 year old stabs her 11 year old friend to death in a dispute over a rubber spalding ball

That all happened yesterday on Long Island!!

And in the ADULT news, a guy in WFO's town, the next town from me,  beat up his wife and then chained her in the basement with his leopards!!!

And a 72 year old man did nasty things to a 6 year old girl

Thanks, DR Vixmom--I want you around when I break out the bataka bat!

While looking for images of a 'bataka bat" I found this article

Quote
Hitting pillows, using bataka bats, and venting: This technical baloney will make you angry!
For years, catharsis--in particular venting angry feelings through "safe" forms of physical expression--has been a popular and preferred strategy of many therapists. Data has long existed calling such practices as "hitting a pillow," "punching a punching bag," or "hitting something or someone with a bataka bat" into serious question. Now additional research shows that there is no scientific support whatsoever for the catharsis effect. Indeed, acting out anger actually increase a person's hostility! Here's hoping you didn't just buy stock in that bataka bat company!

This sounds about right for me, too.  And to steal and modify a statement of elmore's, "Kick me and I'll forgive you, kick my friend and rot in hell."

I'm at work, and just back from lunch.

I arrived at work @ 11 a.m.

I was unable to draw deep breaths last night without my inhaler, so I got in my car, drove to my workplace and retrieved same.

After taking a hit, I logged onto my computer and dealt with three days  worth of e-mail

After a second hit some 10 minutes later, I was out the door and enoute home, breathing deeply and contentedly.

Lesson:  Never be without your inhaler regardless of how seldom you actually use it.

I left my co-workers an e-mail telling them of my malaise and I said I'd be in late.

I was in bed @ 2:30 a.m.    I slept fitfully, but my breathing was great.  I just couldn't get comfy.  My bed is in a different location for the first time in 10 years and I'm not used to it.  Sigh.

Thanks to those who wished me well.

BTW, I already have GALAXY QUEST, and I'd be glad to screen that one, too, as it's a fine, funny film: one of the best, mnost sweet-natured parody films of the cult mentality that I've ever seen. DR Ron Pulliam - I hope your sinuses come back to normal soon.

I "invested" in some dust/surgical masks a few years ago, and I use them whenever I do some major cleaning.  A pack of 10 at Target run only about $3.00.  A truly worthwhile investment.  And I also try to use disposable gloves when I clean too - it's always too easy to touch my face or rub my eyes in the midst of cleaning.

In any case...

My sinus stuff finally cleared up over the past two days.  I hope yours follow suit soon too.

Title: Re:THE LAST MAY DAY

As for the Topic of the Day...

As DR Matthew alluded to - as did BK, himself, the Notes - this "biz" is filled with people who will do you wrong - and, unfortunately, a lot of it is done "on purpose".

I used to hold everything in.  Very passive.  That used to work for a while, but then I just realized I had to let things go somehow or another.  So...

Sometimes, I do just let things go.

Other times, I will confront the person.  *If the person in question happens to be someone in the "biz" who is a true "up and comer", then I will take them aside, and tell them what I thought of their slight - but I couch it as advise rather than a reprimand.  -And, of course, I do this since I was, believe it or not, taken aside once or twice back then. Let's just say that my eagerness at times was a bit too eager.

However, I rarely forget.  Anything.  Heck, I remember what I had for lunch during important meetings - and what my lunch partner was eating too.  And what the weather was like!

-And it's always been hard for me to hide or disguise my indecision, apprehension and/or suspicion when I have to deal with someone who has done me wrong in the past.

On the bright side... At least in my line of work, I usually only have to deal with the person for a few weeks at a time, and then it's "another openin', another show,"... another cast.

Of course, there have been those times when I've "accidentally" hit the transpose button on the keyboard....

;D

Last night in Richmond, I just ended up spending it with my friend, Mike.  He's not in the theatre biz, like myself, but with his work schedule, Monday is his usual day off too.  So I headed over to his place, and just hung out for the evening.  The weather in Richmond was gorgeous last night - even though the rain did move in overnight - but he has this great house in the historic Church Hill neighborhood.  Lots of windows which we were able to keep open.

He just finished his Doctorate at VCU - his THIRD post-grad degree - so we had a semi-belated graduation quasi-party. He even cooked!  Penne pasta with a caramelized onion sauce, chorizo sausage, and white sweet corn-on-the-cob.  And for dessert it was fresh mango and applesauce with ginger and cinnamon.  And all of it was homemade!

It was just a nice night of good food and great conversation.

Before heading back up to Fairfax this afternoon, I made a stop at the storage unit to pull out some scores...  Of course, when I got to the right boxes - which didn't take too much shuffling - they were not in there.  And then I realized, I was doing that thing again where I was thinking of one show, but picturing a different show - well, the cover of the score/vocal selections - in my head.  Ah, well...  *I just made a stop by my "old" music store once I got back up to NoVA.

Then it was quick trip through Ukrop's for some groceries.  I needed my Duke's Mayo!

And then across the street to the 7-11 where I purchases tonight's winning MegaMillions lottery ticket!

I know I've forgotten a few things to which I wanted to respond to, but those will have to wait until I'm back from the show tonight....

OH!  And it looks like I may be "walking" for the rest of week, so I may have a couple of evenings off.  Hmm... Maybe I'll head out and catch a few movies, and/or catch up some movies here at home.  At least one Bollywood movie in particular...

I also tend to hold thing in, and I never forget a slight. I can get past things, but I rarely forget. A major aspect of my character is calm, so people come to expect it from me, which is cool. The downside of it is, if I show a little anger, people react as if I've hurled chairs across the room. It seems unfair, because other people can get away with more outward anger because people are used to it from them.

I also have a habit of writing folks off if they really wrong me. They'll just never hear from me again.

Well, I guess I would only get cast once by you
.  The number of times I have minored in stage combat or modern dance..............

I've held off long enough....TOD:

I offer my friendship carefully (lesson well learned), and I nurture the friendship over years.

I don't have a lot of friends, but I hold a few closely and have had them for decades.

In general, though, I take people at their words.  If they renege on their words without offering an apology or excuse for not holding to their words, I unequivocally dismiss any validity in anything they say to me afterward.

I have no time in my life for anyone consumed by ego -- what they want to do, where they want to go, who they think they are or where they think they come from.

For me, the proof is in the pudding.  More sow's ears have dropped out of silk purses, and the pedigree is fouled.

I ask for nothing from a friend except truth...be who you are, express yourself truthfully, and share your life for whatever time we spend together.  I try to do the same.

Life's too short to suffer fools...

Going back to what I said about the final episode of Lost. She took the baby boy because she believe that was the boy they were talking about and was perplexed why the people behind the voices were not at the fire.

I've rewatched the show a couple of times.  She said she heard the voices...they said they were going for the child...and then some said they were going for the boy.

Two different beings in her mind, I thought.

I believe she took the child because she hoped she could trade it for her own son who had been taken from her some 16 years earlier.  And she was perplexed because "they" weren't at the fire.

"Some" four people were on that boat when they took the boy.  I don't have a clue how many "they" might total.

Here is the front view. It was also a live theater where Harry Belafonte, Liberace, and Elvis performed. It eventually become a repatory house and I was going to direct the play Women Behind Bars there, but the producer was a flake and his brain cells were burnt out from too many drugs. It had a beautiful Spanish interior that one does not see anymore in the sterile designed cinemas of today. if you would like to see what it sort of looked like it can be seen in the film Street Smart which stood in for one of the grind houses on 42nd street. (PS I am in that film if you don;t blink)

Evening folks.

I hope your breathing better by now, DR Ron Pulliam.  I can’t imagine what that must be like for you.  I panic if the covers somehow get over my head or someone puts their hand over my mouth.

TOD.

It depends on the situation.

If it’s me that’s been attacked/ hurt /slighted bad enough, more then likely, I won’t say a word to you.  In fact, you won’t hear anything from me again.  No fanfare, no announcement, I’ll just fade away and it’s very hard to get me to come back.

As far as me telling someone else off, I would say I am much bolder in print then I am in person.  I sure told old Hartline off about the bus situation (via E-mail) and it did help get results.

In person, I might burn to say something to certain people but I usually won’t do it.  But beware if you make me mad enough to do so.  There’s the part of me that you make angry enough that will say anything (and I do mean anything) to hurt you/get back at you.

At that moment, it’s like a part of me sits back and is saying, “Don’t say THAT.  Now I know you didn’t say THAT”.  “OK, that’s enough” but at the moment, I’m so angry that I can’t stop myself.  I’m like a berserker.

On the flip side of that, walk away, leave me alone for about an hour and it’s totally forgotten.  I don’t even remember what I’ve said or why I was so angry.  I (usually) don’t hold a grudge.  This normally happens after I’ve sat on many smaller slights and it’s built to a point that I can’t hold it anymore. I’ve been polite, I’ve been nice and now I’m mad.  It’s kinda like storms and sunshine, when it’s happening, it’s a hurricane.  When it’s over.  It’s over.

Hurt/attack someone I love /hold dear or pick on someone I feel is weak and needs my help and I’ll if I can get a hold on you, I’ll take you apart.  I have a very strong “protect” mode.  The old Broadway Board saw that side of me.

Wow, I feel like I’ve been to confession and I’ve never BEEN to confession!

I hope that everything turns out right for the Vixter!  New Troop vibes your way!  BTW, I could swap some Convention stories with you, VixMom.  I’ve attended/worked quite a few Sci Fi cons.

What a cute picture, DearReaderLaura.  Scotty sure seems to know how to make himself “part of the furniture”.   :)

Jrand, I’m so sorry about Holly.  Vibes to you both.  I’m hoping for the best possible news.

[move=left,scroll,6,transparent,100%]~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~[/move]

I have "National Treasure" sitting here unopened.  I received it as free gift for buying my Mom that small DVD player (which she never uses) for Mothers Day.  I’ve explained over and over and over again how to work it but she just doesn’t get it.  Sigh.

DR Jose, any of those “connections” happen to feature a flying car?  Say October 1st  evening?

DR Jane, tomorrow night (hopefully) I am going to work on my Muse photos the post them in the tech section so I don’t take up room here on the main board.  BK, I promise to delete them when everyone who is interested, has a chance to give them a look see to help decide about hotels for October.

I just got back from Doubt. What a piece of work. It's moving and infuriating and overall an excellent night in the theatre. It is, I think, the winner of Best Play, Best Actor and Best Actress. There is also a good chance that one of the two featured players will take a Tony as well. I am seeing The Pillowman on Thursday so I will be able to compare the two before the awards on Sunday. I'm looking forward to the play, even though I know the subject matter is rather gruesome. I had heard that Doubt is also a difficult piece, in terms of subject matter but there are no details (which is good, perhaps) so you are left with he said, she said and the title plays into everything. I think, even without the Pulitzer Prize, Doubt would have a long life in regional theatre. It's Manhattan Theatre Club's second hugely successful transfer from Off-Broadway and it's another one word title and it's playing in the same beautiful little house. Proof was first and now Doubt and the theatre is the Walter Kerr, one of the nicer small houses, in my opinion, although the balcony could use more space. It was The Ritz for many years and then in the 80s it was refurbished and re-named for the NY Times critic. Both Angels in America pieces played there. August Wilson plays have also used the Kerr It's a great theatre for intimate, thoughtful pieces. Here I am reviewing the Theatre. I won't say too much about the plot since it will, as I said, have a long and healthy life in regional theatre and I don't want to give too much information. I will just reiterate that it was a strong, thoughtful and excellent piece and will deserve the awards it will most likely win. Cherry Jones is chilling as Sister Aloysius and Brian (pronounced Brean) F. O'Byrne as Father Flynn does a complete transformation from the character for which he won a Tony last season, a heartless child killer in Frozen. It's a dynamic and intelligent performance. The two supporting women are marvelous. The company comes together to make a stunning piece. There should be an award for best ensemble.

It's getting late (at least for me) so I will leave you all until tomorrow around 7:30 am.

Later, gaters.

I'm checking in before I check out and crash.  I tried to watch THE GIRL IN THE GLASS BOTTOM BOAT, but it's a film that holds up better in my memory.  It suffers from terminal cuteness and an abysmal "mickey Mouse" score by DeVol hitting every button, grimace and joke until it became insufferable.  I liked the cast but after 40 minutes I was beaten to a pulp.  I liked the cast, but they too could have made more of doing less.

I just got my first email from friends I haven't seen in 30 years; I wrote them before my surgery and gave them my email address, and Charlie, with whom I taught 33 years ago in Pennsylvania (don't ask!), sent a lovely note and an update on all his family.  It's hard to believe his daughter Jennifer, for whom I once babysat, is now around 35.   I've decided to stay at 58 forever.

Good night, all!

Here in Philly, we've had some good theatre news for a change.  The Boyd Theatre, which closed down about five years ago after serving time as a sliced up multi-screen movie house, is being completely renovated as a ligit theatre for touring musicals.  This place was on the virge of becoming another Center City parking lot, but thanks to a group of hard working people it was saved at the last minute.  Philly has lost so many theatres over the years that it's wonderful to see one that was actually saved.

Good Evening!

Back from the show...

Our conductor was back tonight.  He was out last week visiting his family back in England.  -Hopefully, he won't have to return any time soon...  In any case...

It was a fun evening.  The conductor was sort of getting back into the swing of things, and we also had all the cast back tonight too - no understudies or swings on.

I was also being shadowed by Emily - one of the "travelling" keyboard players - since she will be playing my book and keyboard tomorrow night - and the rest of the week.  She's normally plays Keys 2 or Keys 3, but since she is in training to conduct the show, she'll be playing Keys 4 for the rest of the run in DC.  It's a very "rest" filled part, so it makes it easy to observe what the conductor is doing for cues, etc.  And, as of now, it looks like I will be "walking" the rest of the week.  All I have to do is stop by next Thursday and pick up my check.  :)

...On the way back up from Richmond this afternoon, I decided to stop for gas off the Ladysmith exit on I-95.  This is the exit where two gas stations across the street from each other have been having a price war of sorts.  Each of them lowering their prices penny by penny when "challenged" by the other station.

Both stations had the same price per gallon, so I'm guessing some sort of truce was called.  Or that they both just couldn't afford to continue offering gas below their own cost.  In any case...  I was able to fill my tank up for less the $20.00.  The price for a gallon of Regular was down to $1.92!

*I also noticed that one of the "off-brand" gasoline stations was actually down to $1.83!!  Of course, by the time I noticed that price on their billboard, it was too late to make that exit.  Ah, well... I still got a pretty good deal.

A rather morbid question:  does anyone know if Allyn Ann McLerie is alive or not?  There's been a bit of a running discussion of her on Castrecl and people are wondering on her whereabouts.  I could swear that I read her obituary in The Philadelphia Inquirer years ago.  There is no mention of a date of death at imdb or ibdb, but the memory of that obit is on the solid side.

Me two... three.. four... ???

I'm also usually very laid back and calm.  I still remember getting entrance "giggles" when I sang Mr. Maurrant in Street Scene in college.  People just couldn't believe that I could be such a sonovabitch.

Boy, would I not want to be the dresser for Dr. Lao if they DID do a musical version of the show. You'd never have a moment's peace!

I adore the Leigh Harline theme for that movie, so Jerry Herman probably could do a bang-up score for it, I'd miss that theme very much.

Of course, Bob Merrill did a great new theme for LILI when he wrote CARNIVAL!, and I think each of them is individually wonderful, and both fit the story so beautifully.

A smoother run for the show tonight. We have some invited audience members tomorrow night for our final dress (Time Out Youth - an organization for gay teen help and support).

...On the way back up from Richmond this afternoon, I decided to stop for gas off the Ladysmith exit on I-95.

:)

I got gas today at Costco for $2.149!  Why can't the price be that low here?? :'(

 ;)

Regular (non-Costco) prices average 10¢ a gallon more!

Oh...

Instead of my usual stop at Potbelly for my pre-show meal, I stopped into Teaism for a change.  I tried their new chicken salad.  It was quite different and quite dee-lish!  Chicken with Thai green curry, apples, celery, onion and mayo on top of a bed of mixed greens - oh, and garnished with toasted coconut.  Very refreshing, and just enough of the green curry to provide a nice kick to the proceedings.

Had an unexpected need to go out and have a conversation tonight.  Now I must hurry and write the notes.

I have, however, caught up and read all the excellent postings.

Maybe...

But...

We shall see...

But just in case...

Goodnight.

Umm... nope.  Except perhaps to quote our illustrious drummer, Yosef, "Ooooh my God!"
