Well, you've read the notes, the notes were not written in the year of my birth, and now it is time for you to post until the symphonic cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: EDIFY!
-
So far, Malcolm Arnold Symphony for Strings. Einar Englund Symphony No. 1. Aram Khachaturian Symphony No. 3. Arthur Honneger Symphony No. 4. Ernest Krenek Symphony No. 4. Gian Francesco Malipiero Symphony No. 5 and 6. Bohuslav Martinu Symphony No. 5. Vincent Persichetti Symphony No. 3. Sergei Prokofiev Symphony No. 6. Roger Sessions Symphony No. 2. Eduard Tubin Symphony No. 5. Edmund Rubbra Symphony No. 5. Harold Shapero Symphony for Classical Orchestra. Vagn Holmboe Symphony No. 6. Witold Lutoslawski Symphony No. 1.
Amazing how many fifth symphonies were written in the year of my birth. What's even more amazing is that I think I have recordings of all of the symphonies listed above. However, as great as some of those are, there are two compositions written in the year of my birth that are all-time favorites: Samuel Barber's Knoxville: Summer of 1915 and Korngold's violin concerto.
Operas written in the year of my birth include Benjamin Britten's Albert Herring, Gottfied von Einem's Dantons Tod, Gian Carlo Menotti's The Telephone, and Virgil Thomson's The Mother of us All.
Some shows that opened in the year of my birth: Allego, Brigadoon, Finian's Rainbow, High Button Shoes, Street Scene, and in London, a revue called Together Again - ironic as I would write a show called Together Again.
Some interesting films from the year of my birth: Nightmare Alley, Miracle on 34th Street, Out of the Past, Black Narcissus, The Lady from Shanghai, The Ghost and Mrs. Muir, Good News, The Bishop's Wife, Dark Passage, Angel and the Badman, Kiss of Death, Gentleman's Agreement, The Paradine Case, A Double Life, Life with Father, The Bachelor and the Bobby-Soxer, Brute Force, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, Odd Man Out, Monsieur Verdoux, Secret Beyond the Door, Forever Amber, Body and Soul, Ride the Pink Horse, The Egg and I, T-Men, Daisy Kenyon, My Favorite Brunette, Mother Wore Tights, The Unsuspected, Captain from Castile, It Always Rains on Sunday, Down to Earth, The Brasher Doubloon, The Devil Thumbs a Ride, The Perils of Pauline, and many others. Not a bad bunch of films.

Good morning, all!
-
It wasn't a great night of sleep, but I survived it.
-
Look! It's a Thatch-in-the-Box.
-
After two days, boxes are stale, so that one goes to the basement today.
-
I believe I saw a portion of "Sleeping With the Enemy" on HBO years ago and turned off after around thirty minutes.
-
DR Laura, I still believe you should complain about the pharmacist. His work is sloppy and unsanitary.
-
Good morning, all.
-
In the year of my birth, South Pacific opened on Broadway and Richard Strauss died.

TOD
Jacques Rivette’s Out 1 (1971), an 8-episode film running about 13 hours total, that for the purposes of this post shall defy explanation. I’ve watched the first four episodes in the past three days, in conjunction with reading up on the making of it, and I plan on enjoying two more today. It’s a dark and rainy day off, so it’s perfect for that and for catching up on this week’s episodes of
9-1-1 and
La Brea.
-
Other TOD ketchup:
I am remiss in neglecting to say that last week I watched one of DR Elmore’s favorite Hammers, Vampire Circus. I had seen it only once years ago, and it was quite enjoyable. There’s an extra feature on the disc about the surprisingly popular joint theme of circuses and horror, which I find fascinating.
I then watched Hammer’s Countess Dracula, also a bit unusual and rather interesting, and I look forward to returning to that one to hear the commentary with actress Ingrid Pitt.

Look! It's a Thatch-in-the-Box.
Perfection!

Good morning, all.

Got a good nine hours of sleep.

To answer Jane’s question from yesterday, I’m in San Angelo to visit my friend Bonnie gor a couple of days.
-
Some fairly impressive reviews of … tick … tick … BOOM!
I hope it’s playing in San Antonio.
-
George, will you be recording it from Netflix?
-
Only one review I read gave away the spoliers about people appearing in the movie.
-
Turns out it is playing at one theater, thankfully close to my house.

DR singdaw I do not know from RED OWL Food Stores.....and that's not an oboe - that's an OBOY!
-
Congrats to DR JEANNE on her new telephonic hand held device.
-
Congrats to DR GEORGE on his millstone.
-
I enjoyed MR BK's history lesson on his natal year.....
-
Next Monday we are going to have temperatures in the low 30's - and I needed to get an ice scraper for the Smarty. I looked on Wednesday at WalMart, but I didn't see any.
I came home and looked them up and found out that they were in aisle N30.....
Today I planned to go to Ollie's, Goodwill, and then WalMart.....
On the way I realized that the only reason I was going to Ollie's - a 15% off an entire purchase coupon - had been left at home....so that is postponed until Monday.
I found a nice Greek bust and a CLUE game for the display case next summer at Goodwill.
I found my ice scraper at WalMart - so my trip was successful!
-
The Greek bust is NOT for the display case - it now sits on top of my piano.
-
If anyone reads GREEK I will take a photo of the inscription and then I will know ALL about it.
-
If anyone reads GREEK I will take a photo of the inscription and then I will know ALL about it.
I could have once about 50 years ago, but I'm willing to try.
-
I forgot to congratulate George on his milestone. Congratulations!
-
And I loved the pix of Thatch.
-
I'm up, I'm up - five hours of sleep. Got up at nine-thirty for some reason.
-
Congrats to DR GEORGE on his millstone.
Thanks, Jrand!

I forgot to congratulate George on his milestone. Congratulations!
Thanks, John!

And look what I just received the the mail!

Review it when you're done reading.

Popular songs written in the year of my birth (aside from the songs listed in the shows from the year of my birth): Autumn Leaves, But Beautiful, Buttons and Bows, For Every Man There's a Woman, Haunted Heart, Here I'll Stay, I Wish I Didn't Love You So, It Only Happens When I Dance With You, It Was Written in the Stars, It's Magic, It's a Most Unusual Day, Nature Boy, Slow Boat to China, Papa Won't You Dance With Me, Sixteen Tons, Steppin' Out With My Baby, and many others.
Feel free to do these for your own birth year.
-
Nice shower head George. I like that it has the extra spray handle. I miss the one we had in Ashland.
-
Magnets! I don't recall ever seeing an attachment using magnets.
-
DR TCB I didn't realize our weather had a name, interesting.
-
I also wasn't aware that the Pineapple Express comes all the way from Hawaii.
-
Keith was aware of it but neglected to mention it to me.
-
To answer Jane’s question from yesterday, I’m in San Angelo to visit my friend Bonnie gor a couple of days.
Have fun.

Congrats to DR GEORGE on his millstone.
DITTO!

Good afternoon, friends.
-
Loved Thatch-in-a-box!
-
I would love to see a photo of the Greek
yogurt bust.
-
Mr. Brooks sounds like it has enough plot points for several movies, at least.
-
I shall post a photo DR JOHN G.
-
For MR BK here is LA's Broadway & Main in 1947. Not sure this photo has been posted here, but you may have seen it.

Friday evening greetings! I’d warned the person in charge that I might not make it to work at the holiday bazaar today if I had a booster reaction. What I didn’t expect was being trapped in our house all day by the street repair crew that poured concrete and spent the rest of the day smoothing it over. Hope they found someone else to take money at the bazar…
-
Congrats to DR GEORGE on his millstone.
DITTO!
Thanks, Jane!

On the upside, I’ve baked Richard a birthday breakfast coffee cake for tomorrow and I COULD SMELL IT!!!
-
Well folks, this was truly a -- well, I guess we'll call it a ME day -- spent almost wholly on the couch watching just what I said I would watch, nothing more and nothing less, breaking only to eat and check in online a couple of times. I had half planned on bringing something to eat from the outside world, but I've decided to stay in and scrounge through the fridge.
The weather was ridiculous this morning and early afternoon, with yet another deluge, though thankfully, it had been a couple of weeks since the last one. A fine, fine day to stay in.
-
The bust.....about 8" tall.

DR CHAS SMITH mentioned one more mowing.....and I decided I should do that today. I would rather mulch the leaves rather than blow them around....
So I mulched the front yard this afternoon.
I am TIRED.
-
Nice shower head George. I like that it has the extra spray handle. I miss the one we had in Ashland.
My previous shower just had one spray handle, but it was on a hose, so that was nice. This one, since it has the main shower head and an extra spray handle, doesn't put out much water pressure because my faucet is the kind with one handle where you can only control the temperature. I can't turn up the pressure, only turn up the heat. :-\
-
I think I might have to invest in a whole new faucet system, which might need an actual plumber to do the work. :P
-
I am going with my sister in the morning to bring my uncle home from the rehab joint.
I hope he is in a good mood.

Sorry, DR Jrand71, after 50 years it is all Greek to me!
-
Something was going on with both bridges to Portland today backing up traffic, fortunately in the opposite direction we drove to the gym.
-
I had two good telephonic conversations with New World Records about this possible project, so that was progress, but most of the day was eaten up working on recording schedules and budgeting work.
-
Of the many reasons Keith wanted to switch to this gym was the location. With the previous gym we would get caught in that those traffic jams when heading home. Now we get off before the back-up.
-
To our shock, today we would have been caught in it. Not only wasn't traffic moving in the opposite direction, when we exited the freeway onto the normally quiet street there was five times the usual number of cars. They were all exiting the freeway and going back they way they came from.

LOL DR GINNY - the road the theater is on is closed in both directions.....but hopefully the work will be done by April when we have our first auditions.....

Sorry, DR Jrand71, after 50 years it is all Greek to me!
The first line is Pericles. The last is Athens. I’m not finding anything for the middle line.
-
I had two good telephonic conversations with New World Records about this possible project, so that was progress, but most of the day was eaten up working on recording schedules and budgeting work.
Still excited about the possibilities, Elmore.
-
BTW, I tried a reverse, English to Greek, to see if the middle line might be prince, but that didn’t look right.
-
The closest I got was Xanthippoy, which could be a name. Like Pericles Xanthippoy of Athens.
-

The first half was coming up Xanos, meaning blond.

Maybe he’s just a blond dude named Perry.

Or not.

I would agree somewhat. Both were picaresque road tales.

Four!

Buttons and Bows is listed as a top song in my year, with four different artists.

Yes, the movie - one of our favorites.

You are very close DR JOHN G. My friend Mike a theatre professor from Illinois found the answer on Wikipedia...
"Pericles, son of Xanthippus, Athenian".

Good chance. ;D

The playlist I am looking at includes a video of Peggy Lee singing MANANA. I always loved watching her.
https://playback.fm/charts/top-100-songs/video/1948/Peggy-Lee-Manana-Is-Soon-Enough-For-Me
-
Wow - I know I have heard the name Pericles - but looking at the Wikipedia page - his life was remarkable.
-
I think if I get a cat, I will name him Pericles.
-
It must be contagious! ;D
-
You really should, DR Jrand71!
-
.
-
;D
-
Slow Boat to China is another one that is also on the list for my year. I guess it was on the hit list for a long time.
-
DR George, I wonder how your sister decides which Hallmark Christmas movies she wants to save. Since, from what I've seen, they're all THE SAME MOVIE.
-
From the playlist I am listening to the incredible Mahalia Jackson sing Move On Up a Little Higher.
-
DR George, I wonder how your sister decides which Hallmark Christmas movies she wants to save. Since, from what I've seen, they're all THE SAME MOVIE.
;D
-
I've got Perry Como singing Ramblin' Rose .
-
Dick Haymes & The Andrews Sisters singing Teresa.
-
Well, let's see if we can get to page 5 before the late night denizens take over.
-
It'll only take a a frenzy or four.
-
Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers.
-
Jeepers, Creepers, where'd you get those peepers?
-
I'd rather have peeper than peppers, if you ask me.
-
But no one did.
-
Ask me, I mean.
-
It's time to think about some dinner.
-
There has been no sun here for days. It feels like perpetual midnight.
-
Some parts of the Metro got snow today. Flurries. But I didn't see a flake.
-
Except when I looked in the mirror.
-
I had to say it before DR TCB did.
-
He's funny that way.
-
PAGE FIVE, by the way.
-
I missed DR George's new plateau. Congratulations!
-
While he co-wrote Tennessee Waltz, IMHO, Pee Wee King does not do it justice. It would be another two years before Patti Page sang it.
-
I had to say it before DR TCB did.
;D
-
Hello, everyone.
-
Today was acupuncture, then I stopped at Julie's (my vegan go-to) for some take-out.
-
I think I might have to invest in a whole new faucet system, which might need an actual plumber to do the work. :P
Many, if not all, of the newer shower heads have flow restrictors in them to help us all use less water. These can be removed. You may want to check to see if yours does. That may be all you need.
-
The closest I got was Xanthippoy, which could be a name. Like Pericles Xanthippoy of Athens.
Really?? I was going with "Happy Anniversary, Adelaide".
-
I think if I get a cat, I will name him Pericles.
Good name!
-
DR George, I wonder how your sister decides which Hallmark Christmas movies she wants to save. Since, from what I've seen, they're all THE SAME MOVIE.

-
Bruce, could you explain your collaborative writing process? Does David write certain characters and you others?
-
Congrats to DR Ginny on her newly returned sense of smell. I suspect there are some smells you'd rather not smell.
-
TTFN.
-
Good evening!
-
Congrats, DR George, on your milestone!
-
Oreo tres leches cake. Mighty fine.
-
DR Jennifer I know you get your flu vaccination later than I do. Have you had it yet?
I usually read the best time is from September until the end of October.

Hello, Dolly!

SIX!!!!!!
-
Good night, friends.
-
Jeanne, with David, we plot together, come up with the characters together (although in this case, this was his initial idea so he had the characters - I did add some details to them and one key character). We work out the story beats and then, because he's still nervous about being in the same space, as we did on The Brain, we split up scenes - I'll write two scenes, he'll write the following two, and so it goes. When it's all done, we read through it and begin making it all of a piece.
-
Watched one earnest movie and will now watch another.

Bonnie’s cat hasn’t returned and she’s worried. Some vibes would be appreciated for Spitzer to come home. It isn’t like him.

Cat vibes.

Finished with my viewing.

With my viewing I'm finished.
-
And I don't care who knows it.

Cool! ;D
-
Greetings all. Who am I kidding, it is George and me.
-
And I just finished reading The Lincoln Highway.
Is everybody reading this book? Personally, I didn’t even know he had a driver’s license.
-
The highway is attached to the Lincoln Tunnel isn’t it?
-
Hi, Tom.
-
DR George, I wonder how your sister decides which Hallmark Christmas movies she wants to save. Since, from what I've seen, they're all THE SAME MOVIE.
It's my niece, but I think she just has me record the movies with actresses that she likes. That's the only thing that I can figure because you're right...they ARE all the same movie!
-
Slow Boat to China is another one that is also on the list for my year. I guess it was on the hit list for a long time.
I love that song! Especially Liz Callaway's version on her first CD produced by BK!
;)
-
There has been no sun here for days. It feels like perpetual midnight.
Perpetual Anticipation for The Last Midnight??
;D

I missed DR George's new plateau. Congratulations!
Thanks, Singdaw!

Congrats, DR George, on your milestone!
Thanks, Kevin!

How would you know? You are never up past 9:30.

~~~Vibes of All Kinds for Spitzer's Return!!~~~
-
Congratulations, George, on your milestone!
-
A song might have been written in my birth year, but not be recorded till the following year - I think that's the discrepancy.
-
Notes are written.
-
Written are notes.
-
I gotta tell you.
-
Just shaved and will also shower so that I'm ready in the morning to go do stuff.
-
I thought we might just get off page six.
-
We haven't been off page six in a very long while.
-
And we made it.
-
Congratulations, George, on your milestone!
Thanks, Tom!
