Today, I have to go back to work. Of course, last Thursday and Friday were holidays, but I took Monday and yesterday off because I have to use up some vacation time before the end of the year...so I did. I also donated some vacation time to someone who has used up all her leave with a serious medical condition, so I'll now only need to take another couple of days.

It is 5:24 a.m. in Johnston SC. I am again up at the crack of something or other.
I feel rested. Slept well for about six hours.

It is the One-th of December?
Where did the rest of this year go?

The big question is whether to decorate for the holidays....or not.
Last year, I held off until a week before Christmas. I, then, could not stand having nothing up, so I put up two trees (pre-lit, no decorations). One was in the dining room which is inthe front of the house. The tree was a seven-footer with beautiful lights in profusions. Looks good from the street.
The other is a five-foot flocked tree I put on a table by a chair in my den, in the back of the house.
Both trees gave me immense pleasure...but I honestly did not put them away until early March.
I did not light them after New Year's, but I just couldn't work up the enthusiasm to deal with disassembling them and putting them back into their boxes.
This year, however, I have special bags to put them into...if I ever take them out of the boxes.
Bah, humbug.

I need to get my holiday cards done. If I get them done today, I can have December 1 postmarks!!! Isn't that special!
On the other hand, our post office closes at Noon on Wednesdays. While I don't have many cards to address, I would have to do it this morning instead of sitting here moaning and groaning about doing it.
Odd thing here: Many businesses shut down on Wednesdays at Noon. They have for a long, long time. Even when I lived here as a little boy, town would shut down at Noon on a Wednesday.
Doing this meant that everyone working would get two days off each week. Most businesses in cities have enough staff to give each person 40 hours a week, but they manage to be open every day. In small towns, the staff you see is the staff you get each time you visit.

Mine did. Our sick leave would accumulate...and if you went years without taking any, you'd have a hundred or so days on the books. It was not good for anythng but sick time. You did not get credit for it when you retired. You could, however transfer it for the purposes of helping someone whose illness saw them maxing out their accumulated time.

Yesterday I received a surprise communication from State Farm.
Because of an over payment or a change in rates for Petey The Cruiser, I received a check for $19.57!
If that amount was a year it would be seven years after I was born in 1950 and 107 years after DR TCB was born in 1850 - or so says his pharmacy technician.

The state allows us to donate up to a week's worth of vacation time to another employee who has exhausted their paid time off. I did so for an acquaintance earlier this year.
This one has a happy ending: although they were in hospice, a miracle occurred, and they are now back at work! It's really incredible.

Donating leave (either vacation or sick) has been something that we've been allowed to do for many years.

This is something that was negotiated with the union. The state (we're not a state agency, but we're on the state retirement system) had allowed it before we did, which is where the idea came from. It has saved many people's jobs, and possibly lives.

That's very similar to us. Our vacation has a cap of 240 hours, but sick leave doesn't. At one point, I had over 1800 hours of sick leave so I had been donating that. Now, I down to just under 1400.

Since we now can go to the end of the year before we have to be under the 240 vacation hours, donating was a convenience. However, we can only donate if someone asks. We don't have a general leave bank.

But, if we do have too much vacation at the end of the year, we don't just loose it anymore. The amount over 240 hours gets moved into our sick leave. :)

Well, damn double damn! I got a referral to the physical therapist I've been seeing regularly between 2013 and 2019. I just called them to make an appointment, and they no longer accept my health insurance!

Not only is that nice of you, it is nice that it is permitted. I know teachers that have given or received extra vacation time for medical reasons.

Back from picking up an important envelope and a screener thing, then banking - the usual BS story - two minutes at the first bank, and twenty at my bank because when I arrived I was third in line and could see they weren't doing the business line, so I just stood in the regular line. The people at the windows were so slow and then one of the two tellers left. She finally came back ten minutes later and took the person in front of me. Then two people arrived just as the end teller was wrapping up and stood in the business line and she took one of them and that was it for me. Not only me, three other people in line. We all said, NO, the business line wasn't open and that's why we weren't in it. She wisely took me next but I've just about had it with that branch. And their two ATMs were malfunctioning so I couldn't deposit another check there. I'll do that tomorrow at the nearby branch.

I left the car running (but locked the doors) when I was at the mail place. It seemed to lock properly at the bank, but having to take twenty minutes at my bank had me worried as hell but thankfully it started right up. And I have to say, the driving morons are out in full force today - way too much traffic twenty-four days prior to Christmas, but part of it was school was letting out and you know no one ever walks to school anymore - every parent has to pick up their kid in their SUV and they don't care how many lanes they block while doing so because, you know, they're entitled. Add to that that the drivers are just really stupid and shouldn't even be allowed to operate a motor vehicle because they're so inept - I had four people pull out of parking spaces without even looking to see if anyone was coming and each of the four almost cut me off in a way that if I weren't alert and saw it coming, could have caused an accident. You honk or yell or whatever and these morons aren't even aware.

It works because I manually copy the link address that's directly under the photo, then paste that in between the [ img ] and [/ img ] codes, but without the spaces. If you quote one of my posts where I've done that, you can see how it works. :)
