Yes, I am still in Johnston SC, the "peach capital of the world" as our water tower proudly proclaims.

This town is basically very friendly, with many people knowing just about all the other people herein.

Even I get included in greetings from strangers who knew my mom, know where I live, know my comings and goings...and yet I know not one thing about them.  Nor, may I say it, do I care.

Yesterday morning, it occurred to me that I had some bills to pay that were comng due sooner, rather than later.  One was a property tax bill, and another was the insurance premium on the house on said property.  The latter was due Dec. 24th.  I had conveniently buried the invoice under a pile of annuity checks I must take to the bank (a pile is merely three, but still in a pile).

I wrote a check for property tax (due Jan. 13) and mailed it during my post office visit.

Happily, State Farm, who insures my house, my car and my truck, is only six miles away.  I departed my house and began the drive, only to remember reading that an organization had placed wreaths on all veterans graves.  Since it was on the way, I entered the cemetery and there, indeed, was a beautiful green wreath on my father's marker.  My parents are buried side-by-side, and there is an urn in middle of the marker.  I had placed a wreath over the urn two weeks ago, so there is a lot of greenery and red flowers to be seen there.

Continuing my tale of yesterday, after I zipped in and paid my insurance (house and on car), I decided to drive to Sam's Club to do my last bit of shopping before the new year.

I needed to buy a steak for Christmas Eve grilling at my cousin's, and I offered to bring whatever she needed.  She asked for yeast rolls. The intent of my Sam's Club run was to get those two things and return home.

Does anyone here doubt where this is going?  I cannot go into Sam's Club or CostCo...or, indeed, any other edifice that sells multitudes of things...without "shopping". So, I shopped.

I did not buy frivolously...for a change.  I bought necessities, for the most part, and in large bundles that will last me through 2022, I've no doubt.  That said, noses may be blown to excess, sanitizing wipes may be flung about helter-skelter, and lemons may make lemonade (a bag of lemons at Sam's Club cost about what two lemons cost in a grocery story).  Of course, one cannot buy "one" steak at Sam's....so I had the joy of using my Food Saver to package the steaks for later consumption.  Into the freezer they went.  Well...the three rib-eyes went in, and one N.Y. strip.  The remaining N.Y. strip was my late afternoon/early evening dinner.  And I served it with a wedge of lemon, because my first encounter with a N.Y. strip was in Italy, and it was served with a lemon.  I watched others and saw them squeezing the juice all over the steak.  I followed suit, and it was delicious.

Oddly, lemon doesn't really suit the taste of other cuts of steak...for me, at any rate.

To answer the questions that must be burning in someone's mind, I am taking a rib-eye to my cousin's for the Christmas Eve grilling, and I bought a mega-pack of "Mrs. Schubert's" frozen yeast rolls for said occasion.

For Ask BK day:

I remember loving "Adam-12" when it aired.  There was one episode, in particular, that moved me deeply.  It's title is "Elegy for a Pig".  The scene I remember most vividly is the sight of the victim's widow walking up her stairs...like each step was weghted with her sorrow.

Do you have a favorite or best-remembered episode?

Getting more in the holiday spirit yet, DR Ron Pulliam?

Meh!   I had a couple of moments yesterday at Sam's.  I had a lot of things in my cart and a man with two items got behind me.  I offered to let him go ahead, and then noticed a woman behind him with three items.  I invited her to join him in getting ahead of me.

That is SO not the way I used to be before retirement, but...well..what's my hurry?

Both were extremely grateful and wished me Merry Christmas, thanking me.

I admit my heart swelled just a tad.

Yes, that’s the REAL hose test.  :)

The computers came back on at about 2:30 this afternoon. So the Department of Human Services (as well as others), that employs over 10,000 people, was out of commission from 10:30am yesterday until 2:30 today.

We are getting paid.

So we will hopefully have Friday off.....until some boob calls me and decides he wants to pick up his stuff......NOW.

Oh my.  I imagined they were taking their stuff away with them.

I'm up, I'm up - eight hours of sleep - didn't arise until  a little after one, and of course had tons of e-mails to read and respond, including several from the author of the book I'm helping. Then I had to finish doing the formatting on his book, tweaked it several times and just sent him a PDF to peruse. That final bit, and it took a bit of time, was making the right side flush right. Books don't have ragged text on the right - it took me some experimenting, but once I found it, it was quite easy. This fellow is VERY grateful.

Dear reader Ron - I don't remember a lot of the Adam-12 episodes, but I'm thinking about going back to Season One and watching the first five seasons again - I'm starting the final season this evening, although I got an online streaming screener for Nightmare Alley so may watch that.

Watching the extras of Female Trouble. Waters interviews the woman who played young Taffy when she was a kid, and the interview is excellent. They're both funny, talking about being a kid and making such an adult movie.

Would be interested on your take of that episode once you see it.  I was in my early 20s at the time...and things had a tendency to be more poignant then than now.  Although, I have to say, it doesn't take much to make me teary eyed.

FYI:

The VA called me yesterday and set me up to consult with an outside ENT clinic.  When the local VA cannot schedule you for an appointment within six months, they refer you to Community Care, which locates a service that the VA pays to treat you. The ENT office will call me in a week or so and set up my appointment.

Been reading James Ivory’s autobiography, Solid Ivory. Quite enjoyable. I’m 100 pages in, so I haven’t gotten to any of his movies yet. Apparently that doesn’t come for another 50 or so pages. But there’s been plenty about sex and food.

If this were an Internet outage in my building, I'd either go unpaid or have to take vacation time. But since it's on the state's end, I think this is paid time.

Good!  That's the way it would be for me at the library.

Wednesday afternoon greetings!  We went to Dayton this morning for Richard’s 5th burn clinic appointment and they are pleased with his progress.  We need to keep treating his foot with collagen and honey (medicinal-grade) patches, but we don’t have to return to the clinic until January 5.

Very good news, Ginny!
