Topic of the Day:  I liked The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat.  I came across it when I was going to WWU, and it was the very first minimalist opera that I had every heard.  It was short and interesting to me (at the time).  I then got from a music library record sale, recordings of both Philip Glass' Satyagraha and Akhnaten and I really just enjoyed listening to them.  I have since actually seen filmed versions of both, and really liked those, too.  Still do.  The third Glass opera in his trilogy is Einstein on the Beach.  I've only heard it (once in the 1990s and once earlier this year) and I just don't care for it at all.  Maybe it's too minimalist. ::)

I woke around 12:20a.m. with my right leg throbbing and aching like mad. I tried to get back to sleep and I'm sure my tossing and turning drove Annabelle and Thatch mad. At 220 or so, I turned on the light and took another Tizanidine, and finally fell asleep. Since I've been up, I've been dropping and spilling things. I am not happy.

Kitty cleanup is finished and the bed is made. I've been worried that Annabelle was feeling poorly but this morning her friskiness is driving me mad. She's knocked things off the table, leaped from here to there and pillar to post. In a chase with Stella, she leaped onto my keyboard, nearly sailing off the table with it. Sher's been chatting at me, and I am thrilled to know she;s okay.

I find minimalist composers the suresat way to give me headache and make me anxious/ My record producer and 4-time Grammy winner Judy Sherman used to be a singer for Steve Reich before he backame a successful, wealthy composer.

Waiting for the City inspector to arrive to check out the electrical work that was done. Between noon and 3 pm, but they didn't notify the manager until 8:25 this morning to tell us that, which, of course, left us in limbo. I have things here I could do, but I can't concentrate properly knowing that he could arrive any minute. I feel my day has been mostly wasted.

One of the books I’m listening to is Italo Calvino’s postmodern “If on a winter’s night a traveler.” On the way back from the doctor, one if characters who is a writer (and there are many) says he keeps a poster over his desk of Snoopy writing “It was a dark and stormy night.”

So, maybe it wasn’t Bulwar-Lytton after all.

Oh, and this writer likes the “dark and stormy” intro because it doesn’t promise too much too soon. Whether Calvino thought the same is beyond me, except to say he grabbed me by the ear from the first. And now, more than two-thirds of the way through, I’m still thrilled.

I have been thinking why PT would have someone walking after surgery for a broken ankle.   I suppose if it is ok to walk in the cast or boot, not sure what TCB has, it would be to make sure he can balance and actually walk.  Under the circumstances I can think of so many things she could have discussed with him, vs show let me see you walk.

We have three large windows that need the seal at the bottom replaced.  This will require the window people to pull out the windows, remove the old glaze, return the windows and re-seal them. 

If only they could have done this last week before the temps dropped.  It is going to be very cold in here tomorrow morning.

I did a bit of rewriting, but mostly I had to prepare the sample audio for the release announcements. I used my coupon and got California Chicken Cafe - just one breast and wing, no pita, and a small thing of their chicken pasta salad. Not a great day for them, unfortunately - very hit and miss there. My neighbor's back in town after two months gone and brought me a few things from K's Donuts as a belated birthday gift.

I loved the way they brought America to the streets, making it a parallel to the Jet song. And the ending with hundreds of extras lining the scene really let you see that the Puerto Ricans were definitely overcrowding the scene.

The dance at the gym was wasted. There was no focus of the shots on better dancers or enough of the choreography, but it didn't slow down an already-long movie.

I think the sound of Gee, Officer Krupke that was the most irritating. All of the dubbed voices sounded like they were coming into the picture from somewhere off camera. Well, dubbed but the voices didn't sound like they were coming out of the singers' mouths.

One reason why it works for today is that I felt the Jets were akin to Proud Boys, which skewed my sympathies this time through. Kushner tried to make it seem like it wasn't prejudice, that they were just wanting to hold on to their turf. But that didn't really work.

Oh, and the Sharks looked way too old, like men fighting boys. They looked like they belonged in a high school gym as much as Stockard Channing did in Grease.

But the singers were good, the two philharmonics used were wonderful and the music was mostly given a chance to breathe. I wonder if the soundtrack will come to be more loved than the movie itself, in the same way as Hello, Dolly! and Finian's Rainbow.

There were three musicals in the previews. One was Cyrano, which looked both bad and good (the acting looked good, the dancing looked like everything that destroyed musicals back in the 1960s). Another was for some Jennifer Lopez-Owen Wilson rom-com with music. The third was a Pixar movie about a girl who turns into a Red Panda.

Rita Moreno was wonderful, though in the role of tear-inducing Latina actresses in musicals from this year, Olga Merediz in In the Heights has the edge in my book.

Before I got on to the freeway to come home, I was at at stoplight that was on an uphill incline, and the car in front of me (fortunately, I didn't get too close and there was no one behind me) had some trouble getting moving!
