Title: WITHOUT FURTHER ADO
Post by: bk on June 07, 2005, 12:03:36 AM
Well, you've read the notes, you've absorbed the notes like a gazelle wearing Depends, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home, which they will do without further ado.  And, if they don't, it will be with further adon't.

My favourite action sequence from a film is, without a doubt, the battle at Tantrapur as Cutter, Ballantine, MacChesney, and Gunga Din fight their way through the Thugs and escape via the river in GUNGA DIN.

The duel in the theatre Scaramouche is, for me, still a pretty spectacular action sequence.  But then there are many fencing duels I could name...

Good Morning!

Well, the only action sequences I can think of right now are...well... hmm.. nevermind...

;D

Seriously, the only that comes to mind right now is the "chase" in "Star Wars (A New Hope)" - was it in the "first" one? - with the Millenium Falcon being chased by the X-Wing Fighters, flying through the asteroid(?), etc....

DR CP has chosen a good one, and of course the car chase in BULLITT is terrific as well.

So I will start with a couple of others:

The first few minutes of LOST HORIZON when the people are trying to get out of China and there are very few airplanes to pick them up.  Eventually Ronald Colman (and later Peter Finch) does a great job of getting them all together and then in the nick of time getting out on the last plane with his brother and a few others.

The chase in WHAT'S UP DOC? that also goes all over San Francisco and ends with a lot of cars in the Harbor.

And the storming of the Bastille in the Dirk Bogarde-starring version of A TALE OF TWO CITIES.

Well both of my OCR LP's of WEST SIDE STORY are the OL releases in Mono - both purchased at Goodwill or yard sale.  BUT the one that I bought someplace else is that "classics" release with the GOLD front cover and the small reproduction cover of the OCR, and the back proclaims "Previously released as OS 2001" - telling me that yes, DR MATTH and MR BK were correct yesterday when stating that the WEST SIDE STORY OBC LP was released originally in FULL GLORIOUS STEREO - PHONIC SOUND.

TOD, I don’t watch action films much… but I like a scene in a mirrors room of Han (it’s not chasing sequence ::)) from “Enter The Dragon”  starring Bruce Lee. I think it’s really thrilling and has great success with visual effects, and is beautiful as well.

I have to admit that (besides "What's Up Doc?") that one of my favorite and most effective action sequences is the revolution on the steps in "Potemkin."  It was effective enough to be copied quite regularly.

A great car sequence is the one with Jack lemmon and Louis Nye in "Good Neighbor Sam."

Not a big fan of action movies so it would take too long for me to come up with something of note from a movie that is not action oriented but has action in it. Perhaps the sequence where the Titanic hits the iceberg in the 1953 version of Titanic with Clifton Webb and Barbara Stanwyck

Good morning, all!  I slept late this morning, and I have to get to work on DARLING OF THE DAY.  "What Makes A Marriage Merry" keeps running through my head, so I guess that's what I'll be working on today.

DRBen, I love that huge jar of honey you brought me!  It certainly livens up my morning coffee.

TOD:  Two films:  the BEN-HUR chariot race, and the car chase on the highway going the wrong direction, which I think is in TO  LIVE AND DIE IN  L.A.

Love the action movie genre and could fill an entire page with favorite sequences. However I'll choose a few that come readily to mind:

1. The helicopter/train sequence in MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE. Has to be logistically impossible for that to be able to happen, but it was a breathless sequence nevertheless.

2. Once things start happening about an hour in, I'd say the rescue attempts and explosion sequences in DIE HARD which gets my vote as the greatest action movie ever made.

3. The pre-credit sequences in GOLDENEYE and TOMORROW NEVER DIES, both almost equalling action sequences in any of the Connery/Bond films which is saying something.

Hmmmm

I liked the battle sequences in LOTR: The Two Towers and  LOTR: Return of the King

The Speeder Bike through the woods thing in Return of the Jedi (back when that was Star Wars  # 3)

The car chase in The French Connection

Harrison Ford's  run out of the cave in the first Indiana a Jones movie

and for laugh out loud action

John Candy and Steve Martin driving the wrong way on the freeway at night in "Trains, Planes & Automobiles"

All of the INDIANA JONES films, even the second one which most people seem to loathe, have terrific action sequences. The second one has that hilarious and exciting diamond snatching with "Anything Goes" playing in the background,  and it also has that terrific mining car chase sequence.

We're operating on the same wavelength, DR Vixmom, since the speederbike sequence was the first one I thought of, too.

What I like about the Brosnan Bonds is how the pre-titles sequences have set up the rest of the story, along with being excelent action sequences on their own.  (The inside joke, of Judy Dench, a.k.a. Jean/M, sparring with Geoffrey Palmer, a.k.a. Lionel/Admiral Roebuck, is a bonus in Tomorrow Never Dies.)  I especially liked the double-action opener for The World is Not Enough, particularly the speedboat chase through London.

The What's Up, Doc? chase is a standout, too; amazing how closely comedy and suspense mix.  The Indiana Jones films are all full of these set pieces.  (Matt and I are thinking alike, too!)

One of my favorite chase sequences is from a not-too-well known film called Roadgames, starring Stacey Keech and Jamie Lee Curtis.  Set in Australia, the big chase sequence works in reverse, as circumstances force the killer and the pursuer to move ever slower through the city, rather than faster.

I think I have to go with the WHAT'S UP DOC chase soon, also....and several of the scenes in IT'S A MAD, MAD, MAD, MAD WORLD.

And the big panic scene in EARTH VS THE SPIDER when the giant tarantula strolls through town.

The chase in WHAT'S UP DOC? that also goes all over San Francisco and ends with a lot of cars in the Harbor.

This is definitely one of my absolute favorite action sequences!  And it's funny, too! ;D  According to the director's commentary (I think), this was the very first time that stunt men were given screen credit in a movie.  I don't know if that's true, but that's what I remember hearing...unless I'm wrong about hearing that. ::)

In the movie "True Lies," at the end with the helicopter and the car on the bridge.  That was exciting!

One of my favorite action sequences is from a movie few probably know.  One night, twelve years ago, Joe said he wanted to watch a martial arts movie, which at the time was anathema to me, but I agreed.

It turned out to be Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins, and I loved it.  Unfortunately there was no squel, although there were several novels, so the adventure didn't continue.

Joel Grey was hillarious as a Korean guru addicted to American soap operas.  Kate Mulgrew made an appearance as an uptight army officer, but the best part was Fred Ward's fight scene filmed atop the Statue of Liberty when it was covered with scaffolding for renovations.

Of course, they actually filmed on the Statue.  No blue screen, no digital animantion.

I get so bored with Matrix type action sequences, which owe more to Tom and Jerry than to classic Hollywood stunts.

That's why I like Jacky Chan.  He coreographs and performs all his own stunts, with a wicked sense of humor to boot--although he has tossed in a bit of digital magic in his more recent efforts.

But when someone like one-expression Keanu Reaves phones in a performance and leaves all his motion to CGI, I yawn.

Good Afternoon!

Well... They were giving out pairs of tickets to tonight's performance of Mamma Mia! last week to the cast and crew.  I signed up for a pair.  I was going to give them to my uncle, but he can't go tonight.  Then I was going to give them to my cousin who just graduated high school - and she's a big theatre fan - but she's at Beach Week.  Then... Then...

So... I'm gonna go ahead and see the show tonight with my friend, Silvio.  It will actually be nice seeing this cast.  And, apparently, some bits got restaged since the last time I saw it, so...  It'll be be new to me!

Speaking of the Pacific Northwest , did you know a universal study on the mysterious Bigfoot was conducted in the Pacific Northwest?

Three scientists from three different countries decided to go out into the woods for three months with the most sophisticated equipment known to mankind, in hopes of finally proving the existence of Bigfoot. An American scientist from Washington met with a Russian scientist and a scientist from Czechoslovakia. Together all three scientists went off into the woods of the Pacific Northwest in search of Bigfoot. Three months passed, and no one had heard from any of the scientists. After pressure from the visiting scientists' home countries, an expedition was conducted to find the missing scientists. After a few days of searching, the search party came upon a den housing a family of Bigfoot: a daddy Bigfoot, a mama Bigfoot and a daughter Bigfoot. Upon closer examination, the search party noticed clothing belonging to the missing scientists laying on the ground around the Bigfoot family. The Bigfoot family tried to flee, but the search party shot at the family of Bigfoot. The search party killed the mama Bigfoot and the daughter Bigfoot, but the daddy Bigfoot got away. The searchers dragged the Bigfoot carcasses back to their camp, and performed autopsies to determine if they had eaten the missing scientists. After dissecting the mama Bigfoot, the searchers discovered the remains of the missing American scientist. After dissecting the daughter Bigfoot, the searchers found the remains of the missing Russian scientist. The head doctor then informed the search party, "I'm afraid that is it. We have the remains of the missing American scientist and the remains of the missing Russian scientist, but I'm afraid we don't have a trace of the missing Czechoslovakian scientist. Did you happen to see any other Bigfoots?" The head of the search party stepped forward and replied, "Yes, we did. A daddy Bigfoot got away from us." The doctor nodded with understanding,

"Oh, I see. So the Czech is in the male!"

So, of course, right now there's a non-CGI chase and hostage situation in LA.  It's being broadcast on the news nets.  How   ::)  thrilling.

At least, from what I can tell they still aren't using CGI for the news nets car chases.  Those CGI guys are getting awfully (and I mean that in every sense) clever.

This morning I went for a walk, and this is what I saw:

The duck picture is marvelous!

It also reminds me of a story:

The office park (and I use that term loosely) where Dear Partner John works apparently has a couple of ponds near the access road, populated with ducks.  John has told me before of some of their more outstanding appearances.  The most recent one involves a Mom Duck, a Dad Duck and several little ducklings.  It seems that they decided to cross the road (anybody want to tell me why? ;)), right around quittin' time.  Mom was leading, and several of der kinder were waddling with her, as Dad brought up the rear.  Seems there was one duckling who was rather fascinated with something, and was dawdling.  Seeing this, Dad circled around his progeny, opened his wing, and smacked him upside the head!  It worked, because John said that he scurried up to be with his brothers and sisters.

I know nobody asked, but in addition to the Tony's, some other theatrical awards were distributed on Sunday.  The Rochester Stars of Tomorrow ceremony was held that afternoon, to be televised on our local NBC affiliate in 2 weeks.

All in all, we were pleased with how the winners turned out.  In fact there was a tie in one particularly tough category (believe it or not, Best Actor).  And the CRAZY FOR YOU, from Lyndonville High School, was the big winner in our division.  Deservedly so.

The only problem is the Auditorium Theatre (no matter how redundantly named) was built in 1928, before the advent of air conditioning.  Put a sunnny 84 degree afternoon together with 2800 screaming teenagers, and it was quite the afternoon.

"Guenevere" from the movie CAMELOT, which for all its shortcomings, was able to put visuals to that wonderful song - Lancelot on his horse, Guen at the stake, and all the blood and gore.

And - lest I forget - another musical action scene: The Dance At The Gym.

I have just listened again to the OBC of WEST SIDE STORY - I don't think I played the CD when I bought it - I love the soundtrack so much.

WOW!  I hang my head that I have taken this great score and this great recording for granted.    It is as fresh and exciting as the day it was captured on tape.

Did Leonard Bernstein notate the percussion in the numbers - where to play, what rhythm, and what instrument - or did the orchestrator do that?  It is perfect! ;D

Back from a lovely breakfast with Jane, and now I must be on my way to Vinnie's.  Keep the home fries burning until my returning, which won't be too too long.

Barcodes: One has to apply with the UPC code place.  You have to project sales (very hard to do - I just came up with an arbitrary number and probably should have come up with a lower figure), answer all sorts of questions, and then it takes two business days to be approved.  The fee, in the case of Kritzerland, is $750.  That buys us as many barcodes as we need.

My brother just left (he arrived much earlier than planned). After we watched the segment from LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING (the cave of the dead sequence with the avalanche of skulls), he flipped out his cell phone, called his wife, and said, "The floor was shaking. We've got to get a set-up like this."

Way down upon the Mississippi, two tugboat captains who had been friends for years, would always cry "Aye!" and blow their whistles whenever they passed each other.

A new crewman asked his boat's mate, "What did they do that for?"

The mate looked surprised and replied, "You mean that you've never heard of...an aye for an aye and a toot for a toot?"

This is just for you -  DR WFO

Sitting Bull had 3 wives who were always quarreling about who should be number one. One was pretty, one was clever and one was very strong.

Finally, tired of their squabbles, he told his medicine man to resolve the issue.

The medicine man took the wives to his teepee where he had gathered pelts and hides from all over the world.  He told each wife to choose a hide and sit on it in front of the sacred campfire.  The clever wife
chose a pelt of thick white fur, the strong wife chose a hide of orange and black stripes and the pretty wife chose a hide of rubbery grey leather.  The medicine man then pointed to the pretty wife and said,

"Behold chief, your number one wife."

The chief was pleased, but the other two wives demanded an explanation.

The medicine man said, "Even the ancient ones knew that the squaw of the hippopotamus is equal to the sum of the squaws on the other two hides."

Well, since you  begged.......

Many years ago, Roy Rogers and Dale Evans had a problem with a mountain lion. This lion had cost Roy and Dale a number of head of cattle, but what really got Roy's attention was one night the big cat crept onto the front porch of their house and mangled Roy's brand new cowboy boots, which he had left outside overnight. That was the final straw. Roy saddled up Trigger, called for his faithful dog Bullet and rode off to find the mountain lion.
He found the lion, shot it and tied the carcass across Trigger's back for the ride home. As he rode up to the house, Dale pointed to the lion's body and said:

"Pardon me Roy, is that the cat that chewed your new shoes?"

My favorite would be SEARCHING FOR BOBBY FISCHER.....

............ Oh, you said chase sequence.

Yes I just read that Anne Bancroft had passed away. A wonderful actress and who was wonderful in The Miracle Worker.

I have an amusing little tale involving Anne Bancroft.

I was the host of cable Academy Award Show the year of the Turning Point.

When I was announcing the nominations for the Turning Point I kept on saying "Best Actress are Shirley McLaine Anne Anne Bancroft" I must of have had six takes and could not get it right. The director was getting a little pissed so I said let me try one more time. So I said "Best Actress Anne Bancroft and Shirley McLaine."!

I wish I could have seen Anne Bancroft on stage, but I enjoyed her in all the movies I saw here in even if they were crap and not worthy of her. She had a wicked sense of humor and was a wonderful comedic actress. She will be missed.

Then, I watched APOLLO 13 (one of the best films of the 1990s), and then about half of HARRY POTTER AND THE PRISONER OF AZKABAN which I never tire of watching (though I still like CHAMBER OF SECRETS the best of the three which have been filmed thus far).

'Twas I. ;)

I remember Anne Bancroft's interview on "The Rosie O'Donnell Show."  The segment had been recorded in the studio on a different day without the audience because she (Anne) said that she was horribly shy (a Once Upon a Matress reference).  She (Anne) was witty and engaging and just a wonderful interviewee (is that the correct spelling?).

The one story she told (that I can remember) was about when she and Mel first met.  She would go out with friends and by total coincidence, Mel would be happen to be wherever she was.  She said that it happened several times that they would just run into each other.  She later found out that it wasn't coincidence!  Mel would ask her friends where she would be each night and then pretend to just happen to show up.  He was very smitten with her very early on and they'd been together ever since!

I think there's a website for that...

Okay, here's an attempt to redeem myself.  Several months ago, I was in a show (all of four lines!) that was directed by Valerie, a friend of mine.  Afterwards, she sent me a thank you card.  Taking a cue from MBarnum who posts wonderful antique birthday cards, here is a scan of the card...to help make the world a little prettier!  It is a replica, not an original, but it's still quite lovely:

I just finished the filmed in Florida in 1964 musical nudie film SINDERELLA AND THE GOLDEN BRA. It was actually very entertaining!

I am now watching the THE LOST WORLD: ALIEN CONSPIRACY starring our own Rodzinski, along with a very cute gal named Ms. Debbie Rochen.

Now I am watching the Bullitt special features - the McQueen documentary, and a documentary on film editing, which is interesting and annoying at the same time.

Good Evening!

Back from the show...

I had a wonderful time.  It's been two years since I've seen the show, even though I've listened to it countless times from the pit since then, but it's just not the same.

Fun! Fun! Fun! -That was three "Fun!s"

There were some new bits, and it's always fun watching what the ensemble comes up with during the "free-form" dance breaks.

...And I kept my eyes on that Chanel bag and the Louis Vuitton luggage during Tanya's entrance!  ;)

My buddy, Silvio, joined me tonight.  We met up for dinner beforehand with his boyfriend at some brewpub downtown.  The food was good, but I had one strange thing with my meal.  I ordered their Greek Lamb Salad.  Basically it's grilled lamb on top of salad greens, served with tzatziki sauce as the dressing.  Well, first the salad did not come with the dressing.  Second, when the dressing arrived...  Tzatziki is usually made up of yogurt, cucumbers and garlic.  Well, this "stuff" tasted like it was made with VANILLA yogurt.  Truly a taste "sensation".  I asked my tablemates to taste it to see what they thought, and they agreed it tasted like a mistake in the kitchen.  When the waiter finally came by - and he made sure we knew that he was having a bad day, grrrrr - I asked him if their tzatziki normally tastes like this.  That it tastes sweet, and like vanilla.  He just kept saying, "We make it with yogurt."  Ah, well...

The greens were good.  The grilled lamb and vegetable were good.  So...

I think I'm going to call their kitchen manager in the morning.

;)

BUT...

I had a wonderful time being an audience member tonight.

:D

Anne Bancroft... She will be missed, but she left a wonderful legacy.  And I have a feeling that Mel Brooks kept her smiling and laughing... and loved.

It is perfect! ;D

It really is a wonderful score and a wonderful recording.

Having examined some of Bernstein's manuscripts before... I'm suspecting that he could have very well have made annotations in his score to "guide" the orchestrator.  However, I also have a suspicion that Jerome Robbins might have had a hand too.

Anyone else?

As for the topic o' the day...

One word: fencing.

That's all I have to say. The biggest thing that happened today was that we went grocery shopping. I am now eating a large bag of potato chips. And I have the song "Pearl's A Singer" running through my head.
