Well, you've read the notes, the notes told the West Side Story story, and now it is time for you to post until the West Side cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: WHEREWITHAL!
-
Good morning, all!
-
I had a terrible night, but I'm up, I'm moving. From around 4:30 to the moment I got out of bed, I could not get "Coffee In A Cardboard Cup" out of my head.
-
The photos of Ukrainian refugees with their pets are breaking my heart.
-
BK, I think the Group Rep needs a gala production of The Brain From Planet X.
-
Last night I watched Richard Lester's first half of Dumas' The Three Musketeers, which I haven't seen since 1974. I had forgotten that the film had cut D'Artagnan's trickery to get into Lady DeWinter's bed, which prompts her revenge. I remember loving the film in 1974, but it seemed long to me and I thought some of the many duels could have been trimmed, but I suspect it was filling to make the first half of the original film seem full-length.
It's definitely a swash-buckler, and the international cast leaves accents all overb the place, but I'd forgotten that Christopher Lee and Charlton Heston were in it, and I'd be curious to know if al of Raquel Welch's clumsiness was in the original script or if it was Lester's joke - like the pratfall at the end - on her. I loved the design, which sometimes reminded me of Robin and Marian, and the slapstyick and odd turns of humor still make me laugh.
-
DR George, I love Judy Collins, and I credit her for a lot of my liberal politics. I am so jealous you got to see her last night. I saw her in concert at Miami University around 1971, juast before her album "Who Knows Where the Time Goes" was released. She had a piano, bass, drums, and two guitarists accompanying her. She only played piano once, to accompany herself on "My Father," which still breaks my heart.
When I worked at Barnes & Noble, 1998-2005, I used to see her often in the store. I'm happy I had the chance to thank her for being a big influence on my life.

Back to my taxes. More printing of invoices today.

Good morning, all.
-
It’s a short morning for me, this being a two-show day. Last night’s opening went well. I’ll be interested to see how the next few audiences like it. I had wondered how such a classic early sixties show complete with secretary chasing would be addressed by today’s college kids and their audiences. Well, they’ve been having a great time with it, with not one word changed and no cuts or omissions or “updating” of any kind. You never know.

I had an okay night with a solid but way too short sleep. And now thanks to DR Elmore not providing a trigger warning, I can’t get our very own “Coffee Break” out of my head. :) Well, I’m in for a day of it, and I am on my second cup of coffee in a ceramic mug as we speak. Expect more to follow.

Fantastic!
-
Good morning, friends.
-
DR ChasSmith - sorry I missed that you had an opening night last night. I had meant to offer ~~~BREAK-A-LEG VIBES~~~
-
No prob!! I didn't even think to announce it, what with storm and other stuff going on yesterday. But yes, it was:
Another op'nin'!
-
Good morning, all.
-
Almost 10 hours of sleep. Much needed.
-
Glad you had a great opening night, ChasSmith. Vibes for a good run.
-
TOD 1:
In addition to Elmore’s list:
The Bandwagon
The Paul Robeson-Irene Dunn Showboat
Golddiggers of 1933
Swing Time
Singin’ in the Rain
Mary Poppins
-
TOD 2:
These are not very well made movie musicals that I love in spite of themselves:
The original Hairspray
At Long Last Love
The Wiz
A Little Night Music
Popeye
The Cotton Club Encore
Finian’s Rainbow
Funny Lady
You’ll Never Get Rich
-
Reheearsal vibes for MR BK & Co.
-
Or rehearsal whichever it may be.
-
Performance vibes for DR CHAS SMITH & co.
Which number is choreographed the best in your show? that is, if you can see any of it.
-
So many of my favorites have already been mentioned but....
WEST SIDE STORY (1961)
THE PAJAMA GAME
SEVEN BRIDES FOR SEVEN BROTHERS (except for Jane Powell's irritating finger nails on the blackboard singing)
THE SOUND OF MUSIC
42ND STREET
GOLD DIGGERS OF 1933
MEET ME IN ST LOUIS
I like the 30's Warner Bros. musicals because the songs are so great...and the comedy players really get a chance to show off....and Busby.
SEVEN BRIDES..... for the great choreography. PAJAMA GAME for the songs and Doris Day.....ST LOUIS for Judy & Co......
WEST SIDE STORY for all the reasons MR BK has in the notes. I too don't mind Richard Beymer. I had seen him in a movie or two and thought he was fun and handsome.
Although it's horse racing - I hate that AMERICA took to the streets in the new version.....and Anita's scene in the store with the Jets was so low key.....she didn't have the hate and disgust that Rita Moreno had in the original version....I was waiting for it - but it never showed up.
-
DR CHAS SMITH they say that another big storm is headed your way!
-
Yikes! I see nothing of the sort, nothing but clear weather for the next week or more.
On the AccuWeather site, at least.
-
Performance vibes for DR CHAS SMITH & co.

Sadly, they have no orchestra space of any kind there, so we're in a separate room, and the video monitor is behind the players. We have to sneak a quick look behind us whenever possible, and I've managed to catch a few glimpses so far, but only a few. (I never stop playing in this thing.) I've only seen a few seconds of "Yo Ho Ho", which is lit atmospherically and the dancers and costumes look good, but I'll try to catch more. I have no idea whether they're copying any Fosse moments such as in "Secretary" or "Brotherhood", etc.
-
At least we're being miked and piped into the theater by an Emmy-winning sound guy who does all the shows at the college. Mark (or Marc) Weglinksi, a.k.a. "Wedge".
(I know he won it for the Jesus Christ Superstar telecast, and maybe more because he's handled - I think - all the NBC musicals.)
-
Okay, I'm off. Back at midnight, then another matinee tomorrow.
-
Rehearsal vibes for BK and Co.!
-
And vibes for all the rest o' yez!
-
I'm up, I'm up - about five hours of sleep. I shall now be on my way to the theater.
-
Finally getting this thing framed. It’s six feet long.
-
The frame is not one of the ones in the picture.
-
This is the other piece being framed. It’s an original from my friend, Hudson Talbott, from his book about Thomas Cole and the Hudson River School of Art .
-
Great stuff, DR John G.!
-
Coming in August:
-
And also Paul Geminiani's memoir at some point soon.
-
The photos of Ukrainian refugees with their pets are breaking my heart.
:(
-
Well...
-
And that is all I have to say about that.
Meanwhile, I had a decent night's sleep. The muscle relaxers were a treat for sleeping.
Today, I am still tender and must watch where I sit and how I sit. I need support or I'm Quasimodo for a while.
It's a beautiful day here. I ate out for lunch. It's a "down" day for most of us as tomorrow is the day of a commemorative lunch at 1 p.m. at the church social hall and visitation from 3-5 p.m. at the funeral home.
All the family will be gathered, and it may be for the last time since my aunt and uncle were the reason we had many whole family get-togethers.
Unless someone steps up (not me) and organizes an event, our get-togethers will be sporadic and in smaller groups.
-
On a lighter note --
-
BK, I think the Group Rep needs a gala production of The Brain From Planet X.
That would be so cool! ;D

Cool! I never got to meet her.

This was actually the third time that she'd performed in Olympia, and I'd been able to usher for the previous two times, too. :)

I'm getting it, but I wish he weren't such an unpleasant man.

And now, I'm off to my sister's. She needs to buy some wood for the new chicken coop, and a few other things. Then the afternoon is mine.
Until later!

My mother's oldest sister and my mother dying young ended our family gatherings :(

I've been stressing out over the refugees and their pets.
-
Nice stuff DR JOHN G.
-
Very sad DR ELMORE.
-
DR CHAS SMITH this was from yesterday morning.
Maybe their weather reporting is as unreliable as their political reporting.

Well my Capital One Card is now owned by Goldman Sachs.....I will get my new one in the mail next week.

Perfect.

Darn, I think that was photoshopped from a different face.

TOD:
I supposed my haze of nostalgia always hearkens back to the movie musicals of my youth: THE WIZARD OF OZ (how I used to wait every year for its annual showing on television!), CHITTY CHITTY BANG BANG, and DR DOOLITTLE.
And, of course, SINGING IN THE RAIN, which is just pretty much perfect.
-
Back from a brisk walk in the cold and wind. The blowing fine snow made it a bit unpleasant. But still glad we went.

Today I purchased sunflowers only they didn't make me happy like they usually do. It wasn't until later that I realized why I had an overwhelming need to buy them.

Sorry, that was much larger than I expected.
-
Had a productive and fun rehearsal - still stuff to stage, choreography-wise, but all steps have been taught, save for one easy number.
-
On the Facebook "window with a view" page I follow, the heartbreak of a Russian posting his grief to a Ukranian.
"..... still we feel responsible. It is a great shame for us. Something that will stay with us forever. My wife is crying the second day, I can’t read news without tears. It feels like that the same people that are attacking Ukrainian right now have stolen our motherland from us yesterday. We don’t know what means to be a Russian anymore and I am not sure that I want to be one."

I wish I had something fun to do instead of following the news, and stories from people.
-
Since our visit to Craig in Romania I have been a supporter of Romanian animal Rescue groups. Today I have followed stories of people offering sanctuary to both people and pets.

Very sad DR ELMORE.

Good for Carnegie Hall.

I had a fun night of dancing.

I came home and made another Citrus Rustic Cake.

It looks almost as good as it smells.

And I also started laundry.

Busy evening.

Nice list, Ron.
It's not complete, but what sprang to mind as I was typing.
-
Broadway Melody of 1940 ain’t great, but Fred and Eleanor dancing to Begin the Beguine is.
-
Same with Follow the Fleet. Let’s Face the Music and Dance is genius.
-
I had a thoroughly unremarkable day in practically every way.
My first order of business was to take my meds, including the steroids I was prescribed for my back pain.
I went to get mail, and became engaged in a lengthy conversation with a guy I know from church at the post office.
I then went to the Triangle Grill and had lunch...a chili slaw dog and sweet potato fries.
I came home and called my cousin Debra to find out if she wanted me to help her haul trash from her dad's house to the town trash facility (recycling, trash, etc.). She had decided not to do that today, so I was good with it.
I lounged/lazed/lolled most of the day away. I baked some salmon for my dinner.
I watched TV and played with my iPhone.
Ah, what a life.
-
Broadway Melody of 1940 ain’t great, but Fred and Eleanor dancing to Begin the Beguine is.
Actually, I am ashamed I didn't have it on my list. I LOVE this film. Yes, there is corn, but the numbers are terrific. Don't much care for the operatic presentation of "I Concentrate on You", but the rest are first-rate presentations.
-
Silk Stockings is a favorite.
The first time I saw it in widescreen was when it was on laserdisc. I was overwhelmed at how much fun it was.
-
A few I left off my lists:
Royal Wedding
Naughty Marietta
Love Me Tonight
Les Girls
High Society (yes, I am a sucker for Cole Porter musicals)
The Pirates of Penzance
Umbrellas of Cherbourg
The Magic Flute
-
I rather like "Les Girls", too.
And "Damn Yankees" and "The Pajama Game" often get overlooked, but they are both pretty terrific.
And I have a soft spot for "April Love",

Yes to all of the above.
-
It's past midnight here, and bedtime beckons.
I could go on and on about musicals, though.
-
Oh, GOD! Do not get me started on "The Umbrellas of Cherbourg"! What a masterpiece of filmmaking and music that film is.
-
Good night, dang it!
-
On the list of not-great musicals that I love, I must add:
New York, New York
On the Town
Dick Tracy (it has enough numbers to be a musical)
School Daze
The Night They Raided Minsky’s
-
Good night, Ron.
-
And a special mention of The Lure, the Polish vampire, cannibal, glam musical that is too bizarre to categorize.

Perfect.

Had Del Taco for food earlier - I actually went there, although the deep, North Hollywood neighborhood is like a ghetto.
-
It was good, though.
-
Otherwise, I've just been relaxing - watched all the West Side Story extras, which were interesting, and then a documentary about a woman who was killed. I kept falling asleep because it just wasn't very interesting.
-
Hello
-
West Side Story is the first musical I listened to and fir which learned all the words . My dad played it over and over when I was a little tyke and I loved it.
-
So West Side Story
-
Pirates of Penzance
I fell in love with the Broadway musical which I saw with that glorious original cast
-
1776
Another with fond memories . When I was in college we put on a production that opened on July 4, 1976 and then continued through the end of July.
I remember it as playing every day but that is probably a false memory . More likely it was every Friday, Saturday and Sunday
I handled makeup on that production, my then boyfriend played Caesar Rodney

Seven Brides for Seven Brothers
I love the barn raising dance so much

Fiddler on the Roof

Okay, I'm off. Back at midnight, then another matinee tomorrow.
Nothing personal, Chas, but I am finished with break a leg vibes.
But I do send “Great Success Vibes” to both you and the show.

In other news tonight I went to see a long time friend play Hector in a local production History Boys tonight.
I quite enjoyed it

Hello there Tom! How are you doing?

In other news the construction work is completed in the house

However the place is full of polyurethane fumes as the oak floor is still curing or drying or whatever
The final coat was out on in Friday

And we are still living in a forest of boxes

We still need a ceiling fan/light fixture and went shopping for one today but couldn’t find anything we liked after three shops

And we need to look for a new area rug

I like a lot of film musicals, some I might say that I actually love, but I can only think of a few films that I would say are favorites.
-
I probably should have included MEET ME IN ST. LOUIS.
-
This afternoon, after shopping for my sister, I went yo my mom's and we played Phase 10...of course.
-
She won the first game.
-
I won the second.
-
We actually tied the third game...that doesn't happen very often, at all.
-
And then I totally lost the last game.
-
I was only on Phase 6 when she was on 10.
