Well, you've read the notes, you've shouted excelsior having read the notes, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home, which should be shortly after they say excelsior!

I believe that lovely DR Ann has joined DR Jed and several members of the cast of AGYG for a bite to eat following tonight's very well-paced show.  I will leave any critical opinions about the show to DR (Dear Reviewer) Ann.

My first paying job was an after school one.  Delivery boy for a local chemist (drug store!). One hour each week night and three hours on a Saturday. It was this job that allowed me to start my 45rpm record collection.

My first paying job was of course, baby-sitting.  BUT my first paycheck/taxes/schedule job was at an establishment known as Columbia Wholesale, where I unloaded trucks, stacked boxes, and filled orders for cigarettes and restaurant supplies.  I worked there during the summer of 1967 to save up money for my senior year of High School.  And after August, I never wanted to go back or think of it again!

My general experience in casting a show has been that 90% of people who come in to audition are uncastable. Of the 10% who can at least read well, many are not right for a part. I don't think I have ridiculous standards, but there are a good deal of people who try out for shows who probably shouldn't. That's just in my experience.

I built swimming pools. If you live anywhere near Atlanta, and have a swimming pool, there is a chance that I helped build it.

This was my summer job from high school through college.

DR RODZINSKI's post about baseball reminded me of a story that was in one of Philip Roth's novels....a character was telling the tale of a baseball team called The Indianapolis Clowns.

One of their best outfielders only had one arm, so when he got a ground ball, he would stuff it in his mouth, shake his glove off, and then throw it into the infield.  He was always afraid he would drop the ball, so he would really JAM it into his mouth.  Sometimes of course, he couldn't get it back out, so his team mates had to run to him, throw him on the ground, and pull the ball out of his face.  In the meantime, the other team was scoring.

At the end of the season, the manager was looking at the dismal results, and said: "You know, it wasn't our lousy pitching that did us in.  It wasn't even our lousy hitting.  Our biggest problem was those damn inside-the-mouth grand slam homeruns!"

DR RODZINSKI - you "tryout" for baseball and football - you "audition" for a show.

I suppose you still go to "play practice", too. :)

How many of the people you saw today do you think are waiting at home for a call?

Recorded SECONDS off of HBO today. Watched a little of the beginning.

How is it Frankenheimer managed to create a look in his 60s films that is so clean and modern looking? The location photography is so crystalline. It opens with a shot inside Grand Central Station that could have been shot yesterday. This is true of SECONDS, MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE, ALL FALL DOWN... Great visual stylist or whoever did his cinematography.

Mr BK you must ask your neighbors for all the dish they know about Miss Allison Hayes - a shimmering, glimmering star in the cinema firmament.  I am sure Film Historians have a GREAT interest in her.
Title: Re:EXCELSIOR!
Post by: bk on June 12, 2005, 12:20:32 AM
The great James Wong Howe did Seconds - a gorgeously and uniquely photographed film.  I've often said that Frankenheimer's 60s films up through Seconds, are some of the best directed films ever.  Then, something happened to him with The Extraordinary Seaman, a basically unreleased film for MGM.  After that, Frankenheimer became a completely different director - some of his films after Seconds are okay, but none have the fierce creativity and uniqueness of his earlier films.

My first real paying job was ushering at the Del Mar movie theater, a real rat hole on Pico.  It's still there - empty.  They occasionally film things there.  Almost concurrently, I worked at The Broadway in what was then brand new Century City.  I only lasted a week there, but I did almost sell one of those bird cages with a wind up bird inside to Ernest Borgnine.  His wife wouldn't let him buy it.  Hated her, loved him.

Ernest Borgnine has so many excellent performances to his credit.  When I see his name, I know I will like the movie.  He is unique and completely original. :)

Now if HE had played the role in BABY DOLL instead of Karl Malden, I would have liked it a LOT better.

When I first saw it on late night TV on WFBM tv of course, it looked and sounded like something wasn't right.  BUT I did not know until the very end, that it was Christine!  The next time I saw it, I looked closer....

What a terrific movie.  And Tyrone is too old, but he is in there pitching!

"That it isn't even my note paper.  My paper is blue with my initials on the top!"

"Oh, no you see, I knew he was guilty!"

I have never seen it on the stage, but I bet with the right cast, it would be GREAT.  How would they get past the memory of the movie?

My first paying job was a summer one either when I was a sohpomore or junior in high school (I'm trying to remember whether I worked there one summer or two) which I got through the auspices of a high school buddy who was working at the same place.  I was a dogsbody in an advertising agency in Cincinnati...I ran errands all over town, wrapped packages, ran the photostat machine (this was still a few years before xerox, I think), set up displays for photographers, etc.

It was interesting because everyday it was different and they handled a lot of interesting accounts...Kenner Toys down the street, lots of Proctor and Gamble stuff.  I often saw products that were not yet out on the market...I used to stack mountains of toilet paper or toothpaste to be shot for the photographers.

During college, my summer job was at American Book Company in Cincy, on an assembly line, packing books (usually text books) that would come off the presses.  It was hot sweaty work, but paid well, and I stayed in shape.

For a year after college, I worked shortly as a store clerk at Shillito's department store in Lexington, Kentucky, then did display work at their competition at McAlpin's, dressing dummies and setting up Christmas trees.   For a short time, in Dallas, I worked at an answering service.  And out here I worked a few years, intermittently between acting gigs at Book City.  And that was pretty much my entire employment record of "real" work...the rest of the time I made a living acting and writing, something like thirty years all told...I'm tired!

Dressing dummies reminds me of the song "Glendora" by Perry Como.

I'm in love with a dolly named Glendora
She lives in the window of a big department store-a

(And the guy doesn't realize she's a dummy and is quite upset when some workers take her apart).

Oh Glendora! What did they do to you?

Just looked at Frankenheimer's career on IMDB. Nobody in their right mind could disagree that the guy did not live up to that early promise. Some of the scripts he  got or chose to work with were just awful, and I remember watching a film like 52 PICK-UP, looking for some remnant of his early style, and it was just not there.

You're far too young Rodzinski.  1956 and it was a "B" side. ("More" was the "A"). Como really did some strange songs! "Delaware" for one! Loved the "Catch A Falling Star"/"Magic Moments" double when I was a kid.

The play of Witness is not nearly as good as the film.  The multiple twists at the end of the film are Wilder and Kurnitz and are not in the play.

I have an old soul when it comes to tunes. "Magic Moments" is a brilliant bit of pop.

The time that the floor fell out of my car when I put the clutch down

I don't think Ty is any older than Marlene.  And I think his age helps keep the question of his guilt and innocence alive.  He doesn't come across as just some young giglio flattering an old woman for money.  Being older makes him look more desperate, more like a amiable tough-luck loser, a decent guy adrift after the war who just never got the breaks.  While the Laughtons surely have the showiest parts, I think Ty has the toughest part and does it great.  The first time I saw the movie, I didn't have a clue which way it would go.

I jumped the first time I heard it and have remembered it ever since.  It is in my repertoire of half-assed impersonations.  The actor impersonations may not be the best, but the lines are always accurate.

I agree, the play version does not have the zest and wit of the Wilder/Kurnitz screenplay.

My first paying job started the first day I started community college.  I was hired as the "Storage Page" at the library where I still work.  I had to shelve the books that came into the Service Center (headquarters of the library system) into the storage shelves.  I also had to deprocess the books that had been decided by the selectors to be thrown away or sold at booksales.  This was long before recycling was thought of.

Ty Power is an actor I've always liked.  I think WITNESS is one of his best roles...along with MARK OF ZORRO, NIGHTMARE ALLEY, RAZOR'S EDGE, PRINCE OF FOXES, and ABANDON SHIP.  There are lots of others I have a tremedous fondness for like SON OF FURY, MISSISSIPPI GAMBLER, THE LONG GRAY LINE, BLACK SWAN, THE EDDY DUCHIN STORY, and, though I've not seen it since I was a teenager, I remember liking THIS ABOVE ALL.

Well, they didn't just throw them away, willy-nilly!  First, the selectors did throw away the books that were defective or damaged and replacements couldn't be gotten, but then all the resellable books were deprocessed and saved for booksales at any of the then 24 branches (we now have 27 branches).  If the books went out to several booksales without being sold ( :'( ;) ), only then were non-damaged books thrown away.

Meanwhile, back at my job story:  First, let me mention that Timberland Regional Library is the name of the library.  Anyway, that next summer, the acquisitions supervisor (Norma) asked if I wanted to work half-time in the acq. department unpacking the boxes of new books.  I said okay.  When the next school year started, I had to quit one of the half-time jobs, so I quit doing the storage page stuff.  So, I worked from 7:00 to 9:00 a.m., drove down to Centralia (about 20 minutes south of Olympia), went to school from 10:00 to 3:00, then drove back to Olympia and worked from 3:30 to 5:30.  I did that the whole school year.  During the next summer (before I went to Western Washington University), I worked full time.

When I was at Western, I worked at the music library and was able to work at Timberland full time during the summers.  After I graduated from Western, I came back to Timberland and have worked there ever since.  I eventually got back into the acquisitions department and am still working there.  The Western Washington Music Library is the only other place that I've ever worked besides Timberland. :)

Is this an audience or an oil painting?  I once knew a guy who was so cheap, every time he took a nickel out of his pocket, Jefferson blinked.  He was so cheap, he bawled his kid out for buying an all-day sucker at three in the afternoon.  Come on, folks, we're not going to get to page four this way!  I keep pitching 'em, you keep missing 'em.  You're built too low to the ground, the fast ones keep going over your head!  I knew a guy who was so low, he could read by the light of a hot-foot.  Knew a girl so ugly, they said she wasn't fit to sleep with pigs.  But I stuck up for her...I said she was!  Come on, folks, they laughed at Fulton, they laughed at Edison, they laughed at Ford!  Wonder who's writing their material?  Geeze, I've seen better heads on a mug of beer!  You folks are so dumb you think the Mexican Border pays rent.  You're so dumb, you think Rudy Vallee lies between two hills! l Okay!  Okay! DRRodzinski, yes, the margaritas were very tasty, and I'm sorry you were not with us.  DRBen and I are revving things up for the October gathering of the acolytes.

Dear Friend BK, it's not Una Merkel but Una O'Connor of THE BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN.  It may be one of her last roles.

My first job was ushering at the Paramount Theatre.  It all seems so vague now that I have no memory of why I ever landed the job, and I believe that wonderful theatre in my hometown was felled for a parking lot while I was still ushering there.  My other memories of the job were how empty the theatre was every evening and my mother picking me up after work,  It's all quite vague now.

My first job after high school graduation, courtesy of my father and his employers, was a construction job, hauling around huge pieces of pipe and falling into ditches.  I was quite inept and hated it immensely.

The next year I went to work as a student assistant for Miami University library, which got me through college, grad school, and a year as a staff member before I shook the dust of Oxford, Ohio from my shoes and took my life elsewhere.

Goodnight DR Elmore.

DRTomovoz, good night and sweet dreams.

I have a morning with Toyland and an afternoon with my goddaughter's dance recital, a day crammed with incident.  All I have to do is get myself motivated.

My first job was a bag boy at Holiday Village Super Market. I worked there over the summer after my sophmore year of high school. I learned how to pack bags, back when your only choice was paper or...paper. You put the heavy things on the bottom. You didn't put every can into one bag. You left the bread and other breakables till last and placed them gently on top of a less full bag so the bread would not be crushed and the eggs would not crack and you never, never put soap or any other aroma-laden product in with meat or produce. You put it in with the cans.

This was after the era of pin boys but I also worked at a small bowling establishment. It was an 8 lane place in the Minneapolis Athletic Club and the manager was ADAMANT that it was not a bowling alley. These are not alleys, these are lanes. Anyone calling them alleys was reprimanded. He could be nice but he was a bit of a prig. That was in 1973 after a year and a half of unemployment after my high school graduation. I didn't start college right away because I couldn't afford it and I was very reluctant to take out loans (even then at the amazing rates of 1 and 2% interest). I looked very hard for work (there was a recession at the time) and finally found the job at the Athletic Club. I then moved on for a short time to one of the most hellish jobs I could think of (well, perhaps that's a bit of exaggeration but it certainly was a crappy job) doing. I was on the night shift cleaning crew at Totino's Frozen Pizza factory. Ugh. Again, there was a creepy guy in charge and while the job was unpleasant, he made it even more so and I only lasted about 3 months. The next fall, in 1974, I had enough money to begin at the University of Minnesota. I paid for my freshman year, living at home and taking the bus (1 hour each way) and then for my sophmore, junior and senior years I got a scholarship that included housing and tuition. I moved into a dorm on campus and spent the next three years in heaven at the theatre department at school.

My first paying job was acting in what is an awful film. My role was supposed to be quite sizable, but after they fired the director one week into filming (The guy that directed Georgy Girl) I got a phone call to tell me that and to tell me I still had the role, but things are changing. It seemed that they were rewriting the script everyday. But I did get to work with Genevieve Bujold, Michael York (They were both nice) and Burgess Meredith (who wasn't). I am in the final cut of the film but for a few seconds. It was a nice paycheck for only a few seconds of screen time. The director like John Frankenheimer showed great promise with his earlier films. (Isabel, Journey, The Act of the Heart) Like Frankenheimer started in TV in the US and Canada. Moved to films and did Final Assignment and two films after that.

Didn't this fim make the Medved Brothers one of the 50 worst films ever made. It clocked in so short that they had to add minutes of stock footage to pump up the running time?

and this is the tagline that appeared on the posters

We would like to thank Adolf Hitler, David Niven, Joseph Stalin, Faye Dunaway, Tojo, Mickey Rooney, Jack Carter, Alan Alda, John Frankenheimer, and the millions of Nazis, Japanese, and Americans who made this picture possible.

Was that wife Ethel Merman or Kathy Juardo?

Well it MUST have been late last night.  As DR ELMORE has already pointed out, the Una in WFTP is indeed O'Conner and not Merkel.

Interesting to know that the film version of is so different.  I read the story after I saw the movie, and of course certain things don't happen, or happen differently.  Thanks for the info MR BK and DR CP.

I hope soon after all of these depressing First Job stories, we can have a BEST JOBS day.  Whew!  Everybody has to start someplace, I suppose.

I am off to set construction for I'LL BE BACK BEFORE MIDNIGHT!  To be followed by PIPPIN auditions.  Yesterday I went to the Goodwill store and got:

a Panasonic PV1220 Top Loading VCR (the play takes place in 1985) 4.99
a plank coffee table 6.99
a plank end table 4.99
two lamps 3.99 each
one small desk clock .99
one silver picture frame 1.99
one framed J.MacDonald Henry print 1.99
one cassette recorder 1.99
two Pioneer stereo speakers 7.99
one pair of curtains 4.99

I love to go shopping as a Production Designer/Set Decorator - even if the set isn't built yet.  And YES the VCR works!

Yes, yes, Una O'Connor.  I had Merkel on the brain - a rare condition.

Last night, during our frenzy, I said, "Wait until the hainsies/kimlets log on in the morning, won't they be surprised."  Unforunately, only five or so have logged on in the morning.  Isn't that a bit of annoying.  I mean, Pogue did a complete comedy routine, for heaven's sake, and the errant and truant are just sleeping, or going about their business doing this or that.  I tell you, these kids today...

And Ann - where is dear reader Ann with her play report?

Hi folks,

We had some really bad weather the past couple of days. The power has been going on and off so I only jumped on the computer for very brief periods.

I've been doing a lot of TV/DVD watching.

One commercial I've seen more then a few times was the Mens Warehouse for suits.  The guy promoting it states that "Every man should have at least one suit."  So I thought I'd ask,  How many suits do the guys of HHW own?

Good luck with getting the job vibes to Jeb!

I'm also sorry I missed Anthony’s Birthday!  Very Happy Belated Birthday Wishes to Anthony!

I’m so glad that DR’s Elmore and Ben had a nice visit.  I take it that means that DR Elmore is doing well.  Glad news there.

Continued get well vibes to DR TomovOz.  I want to hear that you and DP Colin went out dancing!

Oh, and BTW, would you believe that the new neighbors moved into the mausoleum yesterday during the storm.  Joy.  Sigh.

Lastly, I'm glad that DR Jane and DH Keith are having a good time but I will be glad to see DR Jane posting again.  I miss her.  Bird poop on the head, huh?  A new fashion?   NOT!  Chuckle.   ;D

First job.  I was a........Telemarketer!  Gasp!  Horrors!  For a whole four hours!  I left at lunch and never went back, not even to pick up my check for those four hours.

I still feel bad that I talked an old lady into buying the junk I was selling.  One of those "coupon" books.  Ugh.

I didn’t read and run, BK, honest—I was reading.  I don’t know why I disappeared but I do have to take the doggies for a walk and then mow the lawn if it’s dry enough.

Laters all!

Rule of thumb, I'm discovering: Most people are not jerks.  However, if a person is a jerk, they will often be a jerk in multiple ways simultaneously.

I had a customer yesterday who insisted that the price that the computer was billing her for goods was not what had been posted.  I called over the floor manager, who did a check.  No, what was listed was the same as what had been posted.  The same customer, after the manager had left, then complained about another item, same kind of complaint.  Floor manager returned, with the customer dogging her steps (and holding up everyone in my checkout line), and found what the computer had listed was the same as what was posted.

The customer paid what she owed, but insisted that we had changed the sign.  Not bloody likely, not at six in the evening, during peak shopping hours.

It pays to be able to smile, and move on to the next customer as if the previous exchange had never happened.

 :-\

(But, so far, I'm getting good marks from management.)

Good morning all.  Didn't have the energy to post a review last night, just caught up on posts and we went off to bed.
Well, Annie did indeed get her gun.  She also got her man.  Gotta love happy endings.  All in all, a very well done community production.  DR's Tom and Jed were, of course, highlights of the show.  They work marvelously as a duo on stage, a true father/son team...as demonstrated when they both decided to cover another actor's line, and said it in perfect unsion without even looking at one another :)
Annie was very good, overall.  She had a great take on the character, and was an excellent dancer.  My only complaint was that she let the "twang" in her voice get so heavy that it was hard to understand her lyrics sometimes.  Spoken dialogue was just fine, but song lyrics often got totally lost.
The rest of the show was, as TCB mentioned, a very well-paced affair.  A few little interesting moments...great cameo for the SM as the lights came up on her moving a set piece off stage, and whomever was running the revolve was apparently napping backstage for most of the show.
In general, it got some great laughs from the audience.  They especially loved Sitting Bull's parts, for some reason.  And Tommy managed to make it on stage for all of his scenes, so I'd call the show a success :)

Sounds like she's been listening to the inept Bernadette Peters performance where the twang was so thick nothing was understandable.  Interestingly, Annie Oakley was from outside Cincinnati, and no one I've ever met sounded remotely as moronic as Ms Peters, who should have learned after AGYG to never go near a Merman role again.

Does this mean, DR George, "am dressed" or morning frocks?

I'm back from my goddaughter's dance recital, which is a part of her classes at Steps on Broadway, a great dance school at 74th and Broadway.  Charlotte's ballet teacher is Leslie Brown, who played Shirley MacLaine's daughter in THE TURNING POINT.  It was a mixture, as most dance recitals can be, of the good, the bad and the ugly (mostly in the costumes) with some really good dancers:  a young man,  Stefan Dolbashian, did a solo from Tchaikovsky's SLEEPING BEAUTY in the first half, and in the second he did tap and boogie to Louis Prima with a wonderful Jillian Stevens, and salsa.  They're training potential stars there, I tell you!  My faves were brothers Sam and Julian Pratt, who are in grades 5 & 6, who are fantastic hiphop and break dancers, cute, funny, and extremely talented.  Some of the choreography was excellent.  The afternoon was too long, but I had a good time with Charlotte's parents.

I thought she was great in SUNDAY IN THE PARK and in the film IMPROMPTU; but whenever I see her in a show, I believe at intermission Ms Peters will be indsposed and the understudy will do act two because her voice is shot.  It happened with THE GOODBYE GIRL, INTO THE WOODS (a show I don't like or believe in), and ANNIE GET YOUR GUN, where Ms Peters must be using Lauren Bacall's publicist since neither deserved a Tony for the performance I caught.

I'm also sick of the kewpie doll curls, and I cannot understand the cult raving over her work.

I saw my “friend” again.  Mr. Black Snake.  It was either him or one of his buddies.  This time he was in the front yard.  For not having any legs, he sure could move!

I was able to snap a few pictures of the “Baby Dragons” that live around my house.  I think they are so adorable.  Note the little toenails.  So cute.  That’s what I hate about the snake.  I know they eat lizards.

Good morning all from Down Under.

On Saturday night I went to a preview performance of the new "musical" -

DIRTY DANCING: THE CLASSIC STORY LIVE ON STAGE.

I insert the word "musical" in inverted commas because it really can't be classed as a muscal as such.  Oh sure, there a are about half a dozen numbers sung on stage, but the rest are recordings played over the dance numbers or the action.

To be fair to the show itself, it is not actually billed as a musical.

The dancing is great, the performances full of energy.  The show is part film (lots of projection work), part drama, part mess...!

I am still undecided as to what I really thought of it.

Having played six months to capacity houses in Sydney, the show will definitely be successful here.  The audience whooped and whistled in all the right places (especially when the male lead took his top off) and reacted to the right lines - "Nobody puts baby in a corner" getting the biggest applause.

Word has it this will tour Australia (and possibly New Zealand) before making its way to the Great White Way.  I will be interested to see what happens to the show along the way.

The 2cd cast recording has just been released and contains all the sung numbers from the show plus the pre-recorded numbers which were also used in the film (and as previously mentioned, are used over the action in the stage show).  Being a sucker for soundtracks I did purchase a copy and admit the recording is actually very good.

I'll let you all know if I hear any more news re the tour itinerary for the show.

Have a wonderful day.

Cheers from me.

Today, DS Rob and I went to 2 Target stores for me to look at some file cabinets I saw in their advertising circular.  Didn't really like those, but I did get the computer hutch from the same ensemble.  We spent an hour or so putting it together ( a Sunday in the Park... reference) and it looks very nice on the credenza I fashioned for myself about a year ago.  The hutch could have gone on my computer table, but just didn't look right.

DRDanise, that's really fascinating about the lizards and black snake.  All the fauna around the house in which I grew up were killed off by air pollution and other pestilence in the late 1960s and early 70s.  We had lots of praying mantises, butterflies, grasshoppers, fireflies, rabbits, bats, garter snakes, and I don't remember seeing any around the neighborhood when I returned home in 1972.  Thanks for the photos!

DRozderek, it's good to see you.

I wish we had the fire flies.  I would LOVE to see some pictures of them (hint, hint).

They started spraying for those stupid love bugs and guess what?  We still have them but it killed off many of the other good bugs that we used to have.

I have a fondness for the "walking sticks"  IE Praying Mantises but I haven't seen them or the fire flies for years.   :(   It's rare to even see a lady bug.

Have a good evening, DR George!

I have to go wash the dishes now.  Be back!

Did anyone watch "Into The West" this weekend?  I tried but got bored after the first hour.  Mom (much as she loves Westerens) didn't care for it either.

I know it's a wonderful thing to hear the native lanuages, it makes it very hard on someone with bad eyesight to try to read the subtitles.  Not as interesting either.

'Twas a hot and muggy day in Manhattan. I am now sitting in the air conditioned comfort of our bed sitting room about to pay bills and enter information into Money. I have drunk copious amounts of water and may need to get up in the night to do "whatever". I did decide to exercise since yesterday I indulged with Larry. I shaved before I exercised so I won't have to do it tomorrow morning. Now I am fresh and ready for bed after computer activity. I am so formal right now I could "frow up"

Anyway, gang. Where is Mr. Jose??? I know he has a keyboard to attend to but that never stopped him before. He will show up when I'm in dreamland.

By the way Jose (BTW) I saw a picture of Nick. Wow!  :D There was a birthday party for him and Anthony and pictures were taken by a cast member. If that boy gets any more tan he will blend into woodwork. At least physically, he will make a great Hero.

Now, time for a CD and checkbooks.

DR Ginny, I found out why Expedia doesn't show the CI.  They prefer to show the hotels that have prepayment for the rooms.  The CI only takes your credit card info to hold a room but you don't pay for it until after you stay there.

I finely got the whole package thru Expedia by calling them.  I'm a little unhappy with my coming home flight.  It won't leave until 7:30 PM on Saturday night--it was 6:45 but got changed.  Ahh well.

I couldn't get Delta like I wanted to either, I'm back on American.  At least I am at the front of the plane this time.  I hope I won't hear the whine of their engine like I did the last time.  I was honestly ill by the time we got to NYC.  I don't know what I would have done if it had been the SLC trip.

News Alert!  I was on my back deck about an hour ago, when I heard the sound of crunching metal, followed by shouts, then someone yelling call 911.  I thought there must have been an accident around the corner at what we lovingly call Dead Man's Curve...a blind corner around which too many people drive to fast.  As it turned out, the accident happened on the street and hill above Dead Man's Curve.  Someone was (according to which story you hear) was either driving too fast, trying to park or trying to turn around when the car went over the curb and flip-flopped down the hill.  Paramedics, cops, and fireman all responded promptly.  They apparently have gotten the driver out of the automobile.  The accident happened up by actor Ron Glass's house.  I hear the victim in the car was Brock Peters.  I hear he is alive, but may be seriously hurt.  We called a neighbour who lives below the street where the car went it off the road.  They say the car ended up about ten feet above their jacuzzi.

By the time I got home last night, it was past midnight, and I was sort of in a haze.  Heck, I had been up since 6:00AM!  So...

I logged on, checked my e-mail, did my usual daily/nightly web-surfing.... Then woke up around 2:30... I had fallen asleep sitting up in my bed... with my hands still on my laptop's keyboard.  Thankfully, I was not typingggggggggggggg, and I did not end heading to any unseemly sites accidentaly.  So, I got up, brushed my teeth, then went to check my e-mail again....

Then I woke up again at 4:30... So...

This time I turned off the computer, turned out the lights and went to bed.

When I got up this morning shortly past 11:00, I realized that for me to get downtown by 1:00, I needed to be on the subway by 12:30, yadda-yadda-yadda...

I didn't make it down there until 1:30 which was OK.  I wasn't playing the matinee today - nor the evening show - but it was Capital Pride today, and I was meeting a friend down there.  Well, he was running late too as it turned out, so we eventually met up with each other in the middle of "fair" on Pennsylvania Avenue.

Pride was Pride.  It was also a little boring this year - at least to me.  Yeah, the usual suspects were there, but it all seemed a bit subdued.  Apparently, all the fun happened last night at the parade.

*Oh, when I ran into the theatre to put my bags in my locker, one of the guys in the cast mentioned that someone ran up to him in the parade yesterday.  There were a group of Mamma Mia!-ans marching.  Well, someone ran up to Tim... "OHH!!!  I love your show!!!  I saw it in Richmond!  Loved it there!  Is Jose in your pit still?!?"

;D

In any case...

I did my usual three laps of the festival.  Oh - the heat, ugh, was it HOT!  It actually didn't get as hot as the weathermen were predicting, but it did get a bit toasty as the afternoon progressed.  And the humidity wasn't too bad either.  And, thankfully, it was a bit breezy at times too.  But I do think the high temps may have kept some people home, and a bit subdued.

*One "strange" thing I noticed was that there were plenty of people handing out samples of grooming products - L'Oreal was pushing their new men's line big time! - but there was no one handing out condoms.  I've been going to Pride events for the past 20 years, and there's always been people handing out free condoms.  And with the cases of AIDS on the rise in the gay community (again)... -But that's another story... And another bulletin board...
Title: Re:EXCELSIOR!

So...

Part of the reason I went down to Capital Pride today was that I was asked to play the choreography rehearsal from 5:30-7:30.  The assistant conductor normally plays those, but he wanted a true dinner break today, and since I was available, I was more than happy to fill in for him.

So, after walking around the Festival, and having a nice leisurely late lunch at Teaism (Chicken Bento Box - Tempura Chicken, Sweet Potatoes with Miso Dressing, Cucumber and Pickled Ginger, White Rice with Seaweed and Sesame Seeds; Oatmeal-Toffee-Chocolate Chip Cookie; Ginger Limeade (fresh-squeezed!)... Oh, and a brief shopping excursion through Barnes & Noble - Going with the theme of the day, I purchased "Longtime Companion", "A Home at the End of the World", and a Yoga DVD just for kicks.  And since it was Buy 2, Get 1 Free time..  but I digress...

So, I head over to the theatre at 5:00 to get things set up in the makeshift rehearsal room on the fourth floor of the National Theatre.  I dig out the rehearsal metronome and the conductor's score from the trunk, get set up in the room, and practice for a while.  Well... 5:30 rolls around... No one there...

I head down to Stage Management...  No one there...

I check the rehearsal board - Choreography with Andrew - 5:30-7:30...

I call the assistant conductor... "Just stay there - They probably went over to the Pride festival since the show was doing a presentation... Just hang out. I know they're supposed to be there..."

5:45... No one there...

So, I head outside, and call my friend, Leigh, to play catch up . -And we'll be heading out to dinner on Tuesday to do more catching up in person.

5:55... I spot one of the Stage Managers walking into the building.  I ask him about the rehearsal... "Umm... I don't know.  I'm not in the building yet."

Grrrrr....

6:00... I head back upstairs...  No one there...

6:01... I head back to Stage Management, and ask - since he's "in the building" now, what's going on with the rehearsal...  He calls the Dance Captain who informs him that he already took care of everything before the matinee, so he cancelled the 5:30 rehearsal.. Without telling stage management or anyone else...

"OK - You're excused, you can go...."

I head back upstairs, pack up all the stuff.  Head downstairs, put it all away.  I call the assistant conductor, leave a message for him - with more than a hint of annoyance - and head back to the Metro to take the Orange back to the Dunn Loring station...

...Of course, since the Dance Captain knew at NOON(!!!) that he was going to cancel the 5:30 rehearsal...  I didn't really need to head downtown today at all - even with Pride going on, but I figured I might as well kill two birds with one stone, and spend more than two hours downtown since the Metro rides would be an hour total....  And, since I had wanted to stay in Richmond another night... Ah, well....

Grrr....

But, on the bright side... I still get paid for two hours of work, so...

However, I wanted a beer when I got home... and I still want one...

Instead, I've been 'settling' for a Sprite and more Dark Chocolate m&m's....

:-\

DR Ben - Glad to know that Anthony was able to celebrate with his new castmates - and his birthday twin, Nick.  And, yes, Nick is quite easy on the eyes.  Very much so.  And he does tan nicely too.  Hmm... I wonder if I can get down to Roanoke for the show then.   It's been ages since I've been to Roanoke - and I've never been to Mill Mountain - but I have worked with a bunch of their regular summer staff on other projects at other theatres.

*OH!!!!!!  Please pass this onto Anthony, if you could.... The next time he sees Nick, if he could sing, "Baby, baby, baby, baby, baby..."  -Start on a G and sing down to a C - Sol-Fa-Mi-Re-Do.  Preferably in a high, pop, boy-band voice.  -I'll explain later.

;D

*Or have him ask Nick if he has the "duet" we did on his iPod still?

The problem with photographs of fireflies is that they exist in the twilight or nighttime.  You can't see the bugs, just their fluorescence.  I'm not sure how I'd go about photographing them.

First jobs... Hmm...

I actually think my first legitimate paying job was my first summer of four (three?) at Coast Guard headquarters in DC.  I started there the summer between my senior year in high school and my freshman year in college.  I was a GS-er.  A clerk.  I worked in Enlisted Records my first summer, then "upgraded" to Officer Records the next two, then to some special project for the Merchant Marine my last summer.  I worked 7:00am-3:30 - sometimes 3:15 if the supervisor let up take our last mandated break at the end of the day.  I actually got used to getting up that early - and I could also ride in with my father sometimes since he was still with the DoT in Mrs. Dole's office.  And I was home early enough in the afternoon that I could take a nap if needed.  The schedule only really became a hassle when I was in tech for a show.... UGH!

I was a file clerk.  No real brain power needed, but I was always amazed at some of the other people in my office who still didn't seem to know the proper "order" of the alphabet or ordinal numbers - we filed a bunch of stuff according to the final four digits of someone's Social Security number.

My first "gig" was most likely playing background music for some rinky-dink reception in high school.  I would make $30 for the evening - which was pretty good at the time for a 15-year old.

My first "real live show" was a summer production of Company that Arlington County was putting on in Lubber Run Park (an amphitheater).  I was one of 4 rehearsal pianists hired for the show.  -They were looking for one, but since four showed up, they decided to use all four.  It made things easier to rehearse multiple things, and only two of us were scheduled to play the run of the show.  However, the "honorarium" ended up being divided among the four of us, so...  But it was my first "real" theatre gig, and after that I was a goner!

I went right into other community theatre productions of Sweeney Todd, Baby, Kiss Me, Kate, Pippin (three in a row!), Fiddler on the Roof (four productions in a row! - don't ask), etc., etc., etc... Some of them paid... Some of the didn't... But it was work.  And recognition.  It was during this time that I also first worked with Eric Schaeffer and Donna Migliaccio - used to be Lillard - who would go on to found Signature Theatre.

*I actually did find it a little "weird" that even in community theatre, the musicians were usually paid a little "something" for their time, while the actors mainly got some decent cast parties.

Just home from the board meeting. A record 6.5 hours.
Record short or record long?

First job was as a telemarketer, selling tickets to the Shriner's Circus or the Fireman's Ball or something like that...a most unpleasant job...next was a short 4 hour stint at Bresler's 33 Flavors.

I try to forget both jobs.

Of course I had the baby-sitting and lawn mowing jobs as well.

Footnote:  The production of Company was pretty decent.  We had an Australian director.  Some far out set designer.  However, our original Amy was "fired" a few days before opening.  But still... The county splurged on a full pit band - I still remember marvelling at the percussion set up.  Heck!  We had a drum set player AND a percussionist! -Loved those vibes.

However...

This was the BIG summer musical in the park.  The Big Family Musical in the Park!  Well... The morning after we opened, the switchboard of the Arlington County Parks and Recreation Department was apparently quite busy.  When we showed up for the show the second night, there were big disclaimers posted on all the entrances to the park stating that the piece dealt with adult issues and contained adult situations and adult language.

They kept the pot-smoking and the few four-letter words in.  However, the one thing I noticed was a change in the "Tick-Tock Dance".  (How I LOVED being surrounded by that music!)  After Bobby and April "introduce" themselves to each other, the director had them pull down this big window shade - like it was his bedroom window.  On the window shade was the face of a clock - the numbers in a circle.  Well, they kept the solo dancer dancing in her lingerie - a teddy - (Her name was Susan, and she was quite a good dancer, and quite beautiful too), but they cut what Bobby and April were doing during the number.  Every couple of measures, a big light would go on behind the window shade.  And there, in silhouette, were Bobby and April "making" the hours as the night went on.  Midnight was a them hugging.  But then... 1:00... 2:00... 3:00 was interesting... 4:00 was scandalous... and 6:00 had people gasping!  Needless to say, all that was cut, and the action was just focused on Susan dancing in here teddy.

We've had Honey visiting again over the weekend.

Honey is a pretty spaniel mix, chocolate brown with blond markings around her mouth and spotting her eyebrows.  She's an affectionate sort, but seven dogs in the house is too much.  Fortunately, we're handing her off to another foster home tomorrow.

Footnote #2:  It was while working on Company that I met my friend, Rachel, who I will hopefully see sometime this week.   She just had another baby girl a few months ago, and I have yet to meet Olivia.

I also met Chris Moscatiello who let me stay with him last summer in LA, and also ended up doing the audio for the Oklahoma trailer for What If?.

Rachel was playing violin in the orchestra, and Chris was (already) doing sound.

I've known them for about 21 years now.  WOW!

And always with a man and a woman.

Suits - I have one.  It's black.  I bought it when I was in Madrigals in college.  I bought it the night before our first concert.  And I remember squeezing into those pants that morning - ugh!  -I was sooo in denial of my ever-expanding waistline at the time.  We were the black suits for informal concerts and tuxes for the more formal ones.

Well, I guess I only wore it about 10 times total since we did a lot more "tux gigs".

I still wear it on those very rare occasions when I need to wear a suit.  I at least wear the pants  - which I'm happy to say became a bit "loose" a few years ago, and I finally went out and bought smaller pair!

I used to have a two Navy blue sportcoats - one single, one double-breasted.  I wore those mainly when I was doing recital work, accompanying.

The last time I had to wear a suit was for a Memorial Service I played at the National Cathedral three years ago.  My black suit.  And the last time I had to wear my tux was also three years ago for the opening week of Aida at the Kennedy Center.  *It's a house rule - formal blacks are required for the first week of performance or until opening night (reviewers).  Then less formal blacks can be worn.  -And the rule is "highly suggested" to the touring bands that come through there.  So.. the drummer for Aida wore one of those tuxedo t-shirts!

;)

DR SWW - Ah, the joys of PLUs!  *Once I discovered their purpose, I always made/make a point of remembering an items PLU if I happen to pick one out that doesn't have the sticker on it.  I used to know the ones for the various apples.  The checkers were always impressed - and thankful!

*And Stephen Schwartz even incorporated them into the song "I'm Movin'" which he wrote for the various "revivals" of Working.  In fact, I was the first one to play the keyboard part for that song!  I was the sound of the beeping of the cash register keys.

Strangely enough, it just occurred to me, that I own a tuxedo, but no suit.  I do have a few pairs of slacks and a few sport coats, but no suit.  That is odd.

Oh....

My only "day jobs" have consisted of the following:

-A one month job as a temp.  Data entry.  I had to "dress up" since the boss wanted everyone to look their best.  Even though none of us had any contact with the public throughout the day.  Even though there were no windows in our office.  Etc., etc., etc...

-My father set me up with a job once.  He was working for Mrs. Dole at the time...  So...  I show up one morning at this address not too far from the Library of Congress.  It turns out to be one of the telemarketing/fundraising offices of the Republican National Convention.  I went on my first break after the "meet and greet" and never came back.  -In fact, I ended up heading over to the LoC, and pulling scores and playing in the practice rooms until the end of my "work day".

The next morning, I headed over to Foxes Music - where I had been a loyal customer for years - and asked if they were hiring.  They were.  And I started that day.  It was a great job.  I worked in the sheet music division.  I had shopped there so much, that the buyer would let me behind the counter to look up my own special orders - I was doing a LOT of accompanying and recital work.  So, when I started working there, I already knew the routine.

My boss also let me come and go depending on my gigs.

When I moved back to Richmond seven years ago, I happened to stop into the music store there.  There was  sign looking for someone to take over their Sheet Music room.  The current clerk was getting to retire.  Well... I started that day too.  I was there for about nine months.  I doubled the inventory.  Increased the customers - in fact, I was 'stealing' some of my regulars from Foxes who happened to live in Richmond and would do mail order.  And by Christmas that year, the sheet music room had their best December in years.  In fact, I doubled the revenue from the sheet music division alone in just those nine months!

*And as "luck" would have it, the owner of the place did not believe in end of year bonuses - or bonuses of any sort.  However, the local manager appreciated my work, and actually gave me $50 out of his own pocket!

But then I got the call to join the team for Eleanor: An American Love Story.  The show would workshop down at Duke University for a six weeks, then move up to Ford's Theatre.

I had been doing some "legit" theatre work before then.  Sometimes with a day job.  Sometimes not.  But ever since Eleanor, which was back in 1999, I've been a full-time, freelance musician.

-And that's also part of why turning 30 was such an amazing time for me!

I have now watched all 4 episodes of SKY KING on the DVD I bought...this show will never be known as one of my favorites, I am afraid...Gloria Winters, as Penny, is THE most annoying actress I have ever, ever, EVER, seen! LOL!

Oh, well, I am giving the DVD to a co-worker who loved this show when she was a kid.

I've been back from the dance recital ushering for quite a while now.  I didn't watch any of the dance recital.  It only lasted 40 minutes.  It was actually the fourth set of the day.  They started at noon and had a different group of kids every two hours.  I only had to hand out programs and answer questions such as "Where's the bathroom?" and "Where's the elevator?"

I ate dinner afterwards at The Urban Onion.  I don't know if it actually used to be called this, but it has a mural inside the restaurant that shows "The Herb & Onion."  Cute, huh? ;D Anyway, I had a very good burger.  They don't have fries, but they have what I think are the best hash browns in town.  I get them with cheese melted on top.  Quite delish!

I came home after dinner, watched a bit of TV and was going to make some fudge for tomorrow's Relay For Life bi-weekly bakesale, but I've had a headache all evening and I'm getting tired of it.  So, I'm going to take some pain releaver (acetominaphin-sp??) and go to bed.  My laundry is done so I will have some clean clothes to wear.

I'm sorry to be a Wussburger, but I need to go to bed.  Goodnight, all!

Well, the local ABC station had a blip on the car diving off the cliff around the corner, the newscaster said, "the paramedics rescued her", then showed a clip of the victim on a stretcher and...friends, it didn't look like a "she" to either The Lovely Wife or me.  It looked like Brock Peters!  I'd recognize those nostrils anywhere.

I recorded one of those STAGE benefits - he was one of the performers.  He unfortunately went up on his lyrics during the performance, but the way in which we record, we were able to have him come into the studio to fix the problem.  I believe it was on the Lerner, Loewe, Lane and Friends album.
