Title: THE BEAT GOES ON
Post by: bk on June 12, 2005, 11:59:13 PM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes went on, like the beat, and now it is time for you to post until the beat cows come home, daddy-o.  They're like, on the road, man, those beat cows.  They're reading Ferlinghetti and Kerouac, man.

Interesting about the score to Target.  As I said, it's by Michael Small, who is one of my favorite 70s film composers.  And there are three cues in Target that are great, just like his old stuff.  The rest of the score is awful - synthesizers and bad music, and I just thought, the guy has really lost it.  But it didn't make sense - how could he write those three great cues, and then a lot of substandard Vangelis crap?  Well, I finally watched the end credits - the last scene of the film and the end credits features the worst of the music, and there it was - a credit that read: Additional music by Intersound, Inc.  In other words, some creepy synthesizer scoring company replaced most of Mr. Small's contributions.  Someone should have yelled bloody murder rather than allowing Zanuck/Brown to try to be "hip" and "with it".

My problem with 80's films (and every decade after), I have to be reminded of the films before I can remember them.  They are not ingrained in my psyche like the films of the 30's, 40's, and even the fifties.  I know there are good ones, but I have no reference texts for these films...so they don't stick in my mind.

RAN is a good one.  I guess my THE FLY.   I love a little movie called THOSE LIPS, THOSE EYES...with BK's old pal Tom Hulce and Frank Langella about summer stock. BODY HEAT. The ever-weird Ken Russell's CRIMES OF PASSION.

I think the reason wonderful quirky directors like Penn didn't flourish in the eighties was because after the Raiders/Star Wars phenomenon,  everything became about the 20 million dollar opening weekend, only hitting home runs, and the Studio executive as Auteur...a concept I think started at Disney with Eisner and Katzenberg.

The individuality of interesting film-makers was suddenly straight-jacketed and all their interesting edges were knocked off in an effort to make movies for the lowest and largest common denominator.  In a way, Spielberg and Lucas, by having mega-hits, ruined the film business by setting up an expectation of financial success that became the goal.  While I think Raiders and Star Wars are perfectly enjoyable, well-made films...neither would make my top one hundred or probably my top two hundred list.

Found a list of best film nominees from the decade:  AMADEUS, THE DRESSER, ATLANTIC CITY, BRAODCAST NEWS stand out in my memory.  Others THE STUNTMAN, MY FAVORITE YEAR, HENRY V.

Morning folks!

I trust everyone had a good nights sleep!  Not much to say this morning except it’s Monday.  Ugh.  This is my “late” week, meaning I have to stay until five instead of four thirty.  Ugh.

And I just have to say that I should have kept my mouth shut about the ads—They’re back!  That’s all I’m going to say.

Gotta run for the bus! Have GREAT day all!   :)

As CP said earlier, I have trouble remembering 80s movies. I think that's when I stopped going to movies regularly because there was not much to appeal to me. I think movies I liked which I remember are small indie movies like Parting Glances. I liked Arthur. I liked 9-5. I liked Airplane. I liked ET, it didn't change my life. I liked the first Back to the Future. The second was middling, IMHO, the third Back to the Future was dead on arrival. I thought it was awful. I liked Honey, I Shrunk the Kids.

That's it for now.

Oh, yes, before I forget. For the New Yorkers here, Footlight is having a sale on records only before they move to Internet only sales. They have large bins of $2 records and all other records not marked as $2 records are 75% off. I'll have to look through the bins of cast albums. I may finally be able to afford some of those rarities that I wanted. I don't know if they will still be selling used CDs on-line and they haven't decided yet if the used CDs in the store will be on sale.

Good morning, all!  I slept terribly on Saturday night, but I slept quite well last night, even longer than usual.  So now I'm up and moving and ready for a GOLDEN APPLE day with violas and celli.

TOD:
   A Room With a View
   Maurice
   Henry V
   Body Heat
   Who Framed Roger Rabbit?
   Finders Keepers
   A Christmas Story
A few guilty pleasures from the 1980"s:  MAID TO ORDER, SIXTTEN CANDLES, PORKY'S

ADVENTURES IN BABYSITTING is the only 1980s movie I can think of at the moment that I liked...the 80s was not my favorite decade for film making.

Good morning, fellow Dear Readers. I slept in until 6 a.m. Today I will take a day off and catch up around home.\

TOD: I had young children in the 80s, so I pretty much missed all the movies then. I caught up on some of them when VCRs became available, and I was quite disappointed.

I think there are plenty of good movies made in the 1980s from serious, stately fare like A ROOM WITH A VIEW to pure entertainments like RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK and WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT.

Some other favorites: DRIVING MISS DAISY, FIELD OF DREAMS, CRIMES AND MISDEMEANORS, A FISH CALLED WANDA, DIE HARD, RADIO DAYS, MAURICE, ALIENS, VICTOR/VICTORIA, THE COLOR PURPLE, THE PURPLE ROSE OF CAIRO, OUT OF AFRICA, PLACES IN THE HEART, THE TIMES OF HARVEY MILK, A PASSAGE TO INDIA.

And I had the most BLISSFUL night of sleep ot waking up once to run lines in my head before dropping back off to sleep. I'm one of those actors who can't leave the show at the theater. When I'm doing a show, it's with me constantly, and so it's a great relief when it's over to leave it behind.

Of course, auditions for OLIVER! are looming in a month and a half, so there will be some preparation for that, of course.

Hello, I have not caught up.  We spent Friday evening watching some awful cartoon marathon of Failry Odd Parents, because the Vixter said that every Friday evening we spend watching Daddy's Britcoms and why can't we have a family TV night watching something SHE chose instead, so we stupidly agreed before finding out waht she wanted to watch......

Saturday day was her dance recital, so hthe entire morningwas cosumed with bathing, hair washing, hair drying, hair styling, makeup and costuming

From 12 -4  we were att he recital and ten we had to drive 20 miles further east to Holbrook (DR Ben will know where that is!)  to my brother's home to celberate my neices 7th birthday... the barbeque, swimming and present opening extravaganza lasted until 10:00 PM, thena drive home and happily  all to sleep.

Sunday was church and the last day of Sunday  school,  followed by grocery shopping, laundry  and grilled cheeseburgers and corn on the cob

By then the temperture wa well into the 90's so we all floated around in the pool until 6 pm, and then the Vixter got ready for her church youth group end of the year barbeque and  after she was dropped off, Mr. Vixmom & I ate grilled Nathans' hotdogs and beans, had our Mario Italina ices and watched  "Sideways".

The the Vixter had to be picke up by 9:00 we all took our showers and off to bed by 10 PM

And that is my  E & T excuse for the weekend.

I will now attempt to catch up while thinking of movies of the 80's....

White Nights immediately comes to mind
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Back to The Future
Henry V

Was Jaws in the 80's or the late 70's? I cannot remember....

Well yesterday it rained.  It rained 3" of water here.  Everything was flooded.  My computer LAN connection was disrupted for HOURS AND HOURS.  It is now working, sort of.

Wet. Wet Wet.

DRs LAURA & SANDRA - the OLIVER! program and souvenir book that you sent me was the HIGHLIGHT of the display case.  Everyone loved it.  Even though there is a Don't Touch sign on the case, every time I came in, it was turned to a different page.

DR GINNY as Monica Breedlove....oh my!

80's films....hmmm... MAURICE and ORDINARY PEOPLE are favorites.  I will have to do some thinking on that.

TOD:  I love 80's movies, probably because I went to the movies more often back then.  Here is my short list of favorites:

Reds
All of Woody Allen's 80's oeuvre
Field of Dreams
Moonstruck
Witness
Poltergeist
The Dresser
Prizzi's Honor
The first and third Indiana Jones
Back to the Future
Brazil

More to come...

The more I read people's lists, the more I realize that there were some good movies back then (oh, the difference 20 years will make). Prizzi's Honor, Moonstruck (written by Tony award winner Patrick Shanley) and My Beautiful Laundrette are all favorites.

DR Vixmom, I guess Vixter and I have something in common, I love Fairly Odd Parent. If an episode is playing while I flip through or I'm on the bike I can always watch it and laugh. I also really like The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron, Boy Genius. Maybe I have an affection for Nickelodeon since I worked for them in the mid-80s.

I can take Fairly Odd Parents in small doses, but this was from 7 PM  until 9 PM and that is just too much Fairly Odd Parents for me!!

I do enjoy Jimmy Neutron and don' mind watching that with her, in fact all three ofus went to the Jimmy Neutron Movie last years and we all enjoyed it.

Good Afternoon!

From yesterday...

Ah, the "joys" of casting...

I've had days where we've seen close to 100 people, and only been able to call back 3 or 4 sure bets... and only about 5 or 6 "maybes".

And it's always a bit sobering when I'm playing SETCs - about 250 a day auditioning for about 100 companies all at once.  And there are those kids and adults(!) who do not even get one callback.  However, I do have to give those "unfortunate ones" some credit for putting themselves up on that stage for their 60 or 90 seconds.  But I also wish I could just tell some of them to change careers.

;)

It was all very predictable drama, but it was FUN.  I especially love Dana, a true weasel, whose attempts at sniping are so lame as to be laughable.  And his constant "You'll be thrown off this board soon, wait and see" threats are also laughable, since the owner of the board happens to love having certain people there.

I'm sure you remember my target from rec.music.movies very well.  I wished you were there to join in the merriment and mirth and laughter and legs.  And to finally find out CAT is a woman!  That was worth the price of admission.  She seems rather sweet on Guttke - wait till she finds out that he doesn't play for her team.  Oh, well.

This post will be solid Greek for most of you here.

A local high school just did a production of FOOTLOOSE which the kids loved, of course, but which I would like about as much as the show OZDerek was talking about yesterday...

ANYWAY....two of the boys at auditions yesterday sang a song from FOOTLOOSE.  Both acapella. It is some song that talks about "you can't stop me from singing" or "dancing" or both, I don't remember.  But there is a long section that is just the word "no" repeated endlessly...

No no no no no. nononono, no no no no, nonononono....  It is very difficult for me to know if anyone can really sing the PIPPIN songs from hearing something like THAT!

AND I have a feeling that we will hear it a few more times tonight.

Today, we are having a Silent Auction and Bake Sale.

The goods in the silent auction are donated by agency employees.  Proceeds are used to offset costs associated with our annual Christmas party off-site.

Baked goods are also prepared and donated by agency employees.  Past problems have been that the folks pricing the goods don't consider the amount of money expended on making the items.  Some folks just buy a dozen donuts and they are sold for $.50 each.  Trouble is, the donuts cost $.65 each.

If the object is to make money, it would make more sense just to donate the money one would spend on the baked/bought item.

One of the agency's secretaries baked two cakes -- sherry wine cakes with pecan topping.  Last year, I thought the cakes would be sliced and sold by the piece.  Instead, someone offered to buy them and they were sold for $10 each.  This year, the were sold for $15 each.  I bought one.  It's sitting here beside me as I type and nobody better even think about slicing into it until I'm good and ready to share it.

I've become very good at maintaining my composure while "you" are in the room...  However, once you leave...

;D

However, I apparently, do some have facial "ticks" every now and then.  And I still think it would be sort of neat to have a small webcam mounted above the music, looking at my face...  Talk about reality TV!

What format is the logo in? JPEG, GIF?  In any case..

The easiest way to do it - as I've found out with Mac - is to simply have both applications open.  Then just click and drag the pic from one to another.  Or select the pic in Preview and drag it down to the Word icon in your Dock.  That should work.

Which is sometimes... "I Can't Sing on Pitch".... "I Can't Sing in Rhythm"...  I can't stand hearing this song!

;D

Yes DRJOSE that is the song.  After it was sung the second time (with no drums of course) - a young girl stood up and sang "I Don't Know How to Love Him" - as she sat down I announced it was from JESUS CHRIST - FOOTLOOSE.

The 80s were pretty dire compared to the decades before, I agree. And the cheesy synth scores do not wear well. Still, plenty of goodies to be had.
Of ones mentioned, I love PRINCESS BRIDE, PEGGY SUE, CHRISTMAS STORY.

What else? VAMPIRE'S KISS, SHOCK TREATMENT, BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA, and I wouldn't be Rodzinski if I didn't mention THE CREATURE WASN'T NICE, which squeaked into the decade.

Reading about lame audition songs reminds me of auditioning for GUYS AND DOLLS quite a few years ago. A friend of mine (we had done A CHORUS LINE together) was also auditioning, and he had just gotten his hands on KISS OF THE SPIDER WOMAN's score. The audition pianist took the music, and my friend proceeded to try doing "Dressing Them Up." It was a total disaster. The pianst wasn't familiar with it at all; I don't know what key it's written in, but it was quite beyond this pianist's ability,. and his constant wrong notes got my friend off and he went up in thelyrics and melody. My friend was talented, but that has to be the most uncomfortable audition I've ever witnessed.

For my return today to DVD Land, I chose BELL, BOOK, AND CANDLE. We got to talking about the play version backstage one night, and I remembered that I had the film on my to-watch shelf and hadn't gotten around to it, so I got the first hour of it watched this afternoon.

I've always liked the movie, but I've never seen it on stage. I think I have a copy of the play around here in an anthology, and I'll drag it out and look at it at some point over the next few days. Don't know how close the movie is to the play.

The DVD transfer seemed a bit too grainy for my tastes.
Title: Re:THE BEAT GOES ON
Post by: Jrand74 on June 13, 2005, 01:26:57 PM
I have seen the play - and it doesn't quite have the whimsy of the movie - which is helped immensely of course by Elsa Lanchester, Ernie Kovacs, and Jack Lemmon - and even Janice Rule.  And Kim Novak was so beautiful....a perfect match for an almost too old James Stewart.

But the play is a lot of fun....it just pales in comparison with the star power it must compete with.

Can you tell I love the movie?

I don't have my score in front of me, but I think it starts in A, but goes through a couple of other keys too.  However, the tricky part is the rhythm - that hook.  But once you know it, it just grooves.  However, I remember the first time I had to play it, and I had to play it in my head once before putting my hands on the keys.  It's a bit chromatic, so... lots of info to process.

Yes, DR Jose, the rhythm and chromatic changes defeated both of them. Perhaps he had just practiced with the cast CD and not without someone to guide him in the singing. At any rate, it was cringe-inducing, and I felt for him.

I'm finally back and cannot believe it's almost five o'clock.  I shall spend the next hour writing, as I've been on the go since this morning.

I was having lunch with Tammy at Dalt's in Burbank.  There was a bar-full of people watching.  We believe they were all "plants" because the minute it was done NBC had cameras asking ONLY people at the bar what they thought.  The restaurant was also full but they talked to no one.  I was hoping they'd come up to our table so I could tell them to buzz off, but they didn't.

Whatever one may feel about the verdict, the scene outside that courtroom, with the screaming and the cheering was nauseating and shameful and if that doesn't tell you what's wrong with this country and the times we live in, nothing will.  It's not just the circus atmosphere, it's like these people are being entertained by this.

I have to say as a criminal defense lawyer, I am happy with the verdicts, it really was a reasonable doubt case, but I am even more happy that the pundits were so wrong. Dan Abrams doing a piece on the cell he would occupy was enough to make me gag. At least the jury ignored them. I think the cable news pundits are more disgusting than the fans, but it is a close call

Re the bar at Duff's, I'm not surprised they got the coverage over the restaurant crowd.  For one thing, it was obvious that they were watching the results, because the televisions were right there.  Secondly, their tongues were more likely to be loose, since alcohol can do that.  Third, who wants to get someone's opinion while they're masticating?  Gross.  (Not that our BK ever talks with his mouth full, but others have been known to do it.  Eeeewww.)

Well, the storms finally came through...  About four really hard downpours about 15 minutes apart.  Some lightning and thunder too.

I ended up heading to Baja Fresh for dinner.  It was OK - heck, it was Baja Fresh.  Then I headed next door to Safeway where it seemed like almost of the ice cream freezer case aisle was on sale!  So...  I stocked up on some Edy's, and I picked up a box Good Humor Strawberry Shortcakes and Toasted Almonsd bars.  -The Chocolate Eclairs were sold out.  ;)

Actually, I was given a copy of the London cast recording and I've only listened to it once...maybe twice.  A local children's (ages 8-16, so they're not all that young) theater group did the show a couple of years ago and it seemed like all the kids thought that it was the greatest show ever written!  And according to www.castalbumdb.com, there are SIX (http://www.castalbumdb.com/titltitl.cfm?TNumber=723) different cast albums from around the world!  Whooda thunk it? :P

DR Jose - Edy's Grand was on sale at our grocery today (2 for $6), too, so we got Mint Chocolate Chip and Strawberry.  Yesterday, Rob and I stopped at a new ice cream stand here in town where they serve Trauth's (a Cincinnati -well, actually, Newport, KY - brand).  I had Cherry Cordial and Coffee; Rob had Moose Tracks and Mint Chocolate Chip.

DR Ginny - Espresso Chip, and the Orange Sherbert with Chocolate Chips. -I almost went for the French Silk... Maybe tomorrow. ;)

And, of course, Edy's changed their "lite" to "Slow Churned"... whatever that means.

Oh, and it also looks like they've downsized the containers again - like all ice cream makers have done.  It seems like only the store brands sell a true half-gallon container nowadays.

Hi, I’m home.  :D Tomovoz and elmore how are you feeling?

I just began reading on page six so I’m not sure why you are discussing this subject, however the first movie Keith remembers is the 1956 film THE MOLE PEOPLE with John Agar and Hugh Beaumont.

I have absolutely no idea what my first movie was.  I remember taking Bryan to see the original 101 DALMATIONS.

I distinctly remember not seeing 101 Dalmatians when it first came out.  All my friends in school saw it, of course, but my parents didn't see the sense of going to see a movie at a theater.  They would rather save money and go to a drive-in, or better yet stay home.

Excellent, Tom. Well, I've been thinking of what I could do to pay you back for the good music you've bestowed, and now I shall tell you.
A year ago or so, I was in a thrift shop and found a tin box of 45s, which I proceeded to look through, and find that it was a lot of odd soul tunes from down Lousiana way, mixed with a lot of other rarities and odds and ends. I paid $25 for the box, brought it home and just started recording all the tunes to my minidisk (after washing them in my bathtub), and there was scarcely a bum cut in the bunch. A pal took my minidisk and made CDs from them, and thus the collection was born, named after the guy whose name was stamped onto all the 45s:
GERALD WOLF OF SHREVEPORT, LOUISIANA'S RUSTY TIN BOX OF 45s

Friends have made copies and it has become quite popular, and now you shall have your own set, if only your address you will provide.

Edy's Ice Cream is on sale at my local store this week, too - $1.99 for a standard sized container. I was tempted, but I had just gotten two Breyer's for the price of one last week, so no more room in the freezer for ice cream, especially since I only have it once a week.

The White Stripes I find sort of boring. I went to see DEVO at Central Park last year and the Stripes opened up and just made me want to hang myself, and then DEVO gets up there, and those guys just commanded the stage. I thought, that's the difference between a band that knows how to entertain and one that doesn't.

Demon Days really picks up on the last few cuts when Dennis Hopper narrates a song and a choir shows up. Fun.

I love The White Stripes for their sparseness of sound.  It's just them and some backup on the records.  Very pure and very loud.

I also liked Loretta Lynn's Van Lear Rose CD last year that was produced by Jack White.  Again, very pure stripped down music.  It just appeals to me.

Good evening!

So... The "adventures" with the local contractor continues...

The assistant conductor called me earlier tonight to apologize for the mix-up with the rehearsal yesterday.  And after that he asked, "So, has the contractor gotten back to you about playing some more shows this week?"

No.

So...  I know my schedule, but the person who is supposed to give me that schedule has yet to do so.

Hmmm...

Oh, and I think that's Whitey's White Chocolate Raspberry featured above.  White chocolate flavored ice cream with red raspberry swirled throughout and mixed with raspberry chocolate almond flakes.

Although I think the flavor I ordered the most was:

CHOCOLATE PEANUT BUTTER REVEL - Chocolate flavored ice cream with brownie bits mixed in and peanut butter swirled throughout.

...And there's a rather "famous" story about a beauty pageant finalist who made it to the final round.  When it came down to the question and answer period, she was asked how she would like to improve the world.  Her answer was something along the lines of, "I'd like world peace and Whitey's for everyone!"

-Well... the out-of-towners thought she was saying "whities" and not "Whitey's".   There were both laugh and gasps after she answered.

Today at work was our Relay For Life team's bake sale.  I didn't make anything last night, so I shall now make two batches of fudge...one plain and one with pecans.  Since the bake sale lasts until everything's been sold, it does last several days.  Fortunately, most people bring stuff that can last more than just one day.  And new stuff showing up later is not too unusual, either.

So, fudge, here I come! ;D
