Title: MARK SPITZ
Post by: bk on June 13, 2005, 11:59:26 PM
Well, you've read the notes, you've sung "If You Knew Zebu Like I Knew Zebu," you've contemplated Mark Spitz, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're still playing with their zebus.

Darn.  I didn't win the Unseemly Trivia Contest. :'( ;)

Oh, well.  Congratulations, DR Charles Pogue!

I can remember watching the 1984 (or was 1980) Olympics with Torville and Dean's Bolero number.  I thought that it was absolutely incredible (I had never really watched ice dancing, just pairs skating...very different).  After they became the big thing, there were stories about them showing past performances and their routine to the overture to Mack & Mabel.  I thought that that was wonderful and funny!

I believe your name is listed amongst the winners, George.  Anyone who guesses correctly is a WINNER.  The prize-winner is chosen arbitrarily and at random, but everyone who guesses correctly is a true WINNER.

XENOPHOBIA, baby, XENOPHOBIA!

It's was the clue "one of musical theatre's greatest leading men."  For me, that could only be Alfred Drake.  I went to Mr. Drake's credits, after that it was a cake-walk.

I am honoured to be among so many distinguished winners whose knowledge of these things is so superior to my own.  I just got lucky this time.

I haven't watched the Olympics in years.  As a consequence, I have no favourite Olympic moments.  I remember, as most of a certain age do, the horrible attack on the Israeli team by terrorists back whenever it was.

I'm not going to say what specific piece of information led me to the correct answer, because I'm afraid that that kind of information may not be included in future contests...although it hasn't always been in previous ones, nor has it helped me every time that it has been included...but it has more times that not. ;)

I, like Mr. Pogue, don't have many Olympic memories. I have friends who make time to watch both Winter and Summer games but, I guess my general dislike of sports just makes it easier to skip watching. If the Olympics come to NY (highly unlikely) I think I will be able to continue not watching.

Another late sleeping day!  The heat is unbearable, and last night no amount of oscillating fans could render me unconscious.  It was as though a heavy, hot damp blanket lay over me opressing movement and leaving the parts of my body and sheet not in the wake of the fans drenched in sweat.  No, I do not like this weather.  The weather reports promise relief soon, but soon is not soon enough.

I have no memories of "Olympic moments" even though I catch a goodly part of summer and winter broadcasts.  I loathe women's gymnastics the most:  I find their silly prancing about between the tumbling and leaping to be lousy choreography and a test of my patience.

I am crabby this morning!

I cannot remeber any specific Olympic events other than Mark Spitz and the year it was in Atlant and the women';s gymnastics team won whenthe girl who had sprained her ankle still managed to make a spectacular leap over the horse

I like to watch the unparallel bars events and hte rings... the way those gymnasts seem to defy gravity

And I like the ice dancing,  but I never go out of my way to watch the Olympics, if I happen to turn on the TV and its on well I'll watch for a while

Personally I am not in favor of NY getting the Olypmics, I think that it will cost more than it will bring in (just like the Republican convention last summer), and it will just increase NY's  attractiveness as a   target .

I'm a nut for the Olympics and I always look forward to both winter and summer editions.  Favorite memories include:

The Miracle on Ice--US Men's Hockey Team beating the Russians in 1980.

The archer who ignited the Olympic flame with an arrow (I think that was Barcelona '92.)

Speed skater Dan Jansen finally winning a gold medal in '94.

After all the ugliness of the fixed judging of the pairs skating in 02, the Russian and Canadian teams coming out and skating together in a pas de quatre(?).  And then the Russian team doing a beautiful Tramp and the Kid routine in the exhibitions performances.

Tonya Harding skating to the Theme from Godzilla (or was it the Theme from Jurassic Park?)

Skater Sarah Hughes coming out of nowhere and delivering a dead-on perfect performance with a big bright smile on her face throughout in 02.

I was living in Los Angeles during the 1984 Olympics and since most natives left town to avoid them there was less traffic and it was so much easier to get around.  The buses were empty and running faster and there were not nearlyas many cars on the streets.  As soon as the Olympians left, the natives came home and trafic and bus service returned to its usual mess.

A legend from the Tokyo Olympic Games in 1964.  The Japanese female Volleyball team  was very strong and won a glorious gold medal, and they have been called “Witches of the Orient” since then.   I have no idea why people called the girls such a terrific nickname.  I suppose…that they endured through unthinkable hard trainings for the Olympics under a manager called “Demon”, who was unnaturally madly strict, that’s why the girls were given the nickname(I think they’re GOOD witches)  The story still is introduced every time the Olympic year comes.  There is no Wiches or Demon nowadays.

As soon as I woke up, I turned on the radio, and heard the weather report... UGH!  I have a feeling I won't step out of the house until I have to head into the theatre today.  And it's also the first day with an official Heat Advisory, so it must be hot....  But it's summer, so it's supposed to be, so...

As for the Olympics...

Two words:  Greg Louganis

;D

-Actually, when he hit his head on the diving board... OUCH!  -And I really did think he and Steve Kmetko made a nice looking couple.  ;)

Otherwise, the Olympics are basically another "tv special" to me.  I'm not a true sports fan by any means, but sometimes I do find myself tuning in and rooting for someone.

The last time the US Men's Gymnastics team won the Gold.  *And as a friend of mine observed: The cuter the team, the higher they place.  Hmmm...

There are a few ice dancing, and pairs figure skating routines I sort of remember, as well as some Men's and Women's solo programs.  I can see the costumes whizzing over the ice, but no names are coming to mind right now.

In any case...

I need breakfast...  back in a few...

TOD - I follow figure skating pretty closely and my favorite Olympic moments both involved unexpected silver medals.  Neither Elizabeth Manley in 1988 nor Paul Wylie in 1992 were in the medal hunt, just representing their countries (Canada and the US, respectively).  They were both so thrilled when they won silver medals and their reactions represent what I think Olympic competition should be all about.  I get a little disgusted when skaters go in expecting to be coronated the gold medalist.

Well I am finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel in getting my Bacharach charts done.  I have managed to churn out completely new arrangements for about an hour worth of material for a 5 piece band (including two completely from-scratch long medleys) in about 2 weeks, so I am feeling exhausted.

Re:  Trivia.  As I mentioned to BK, Elmore and I were discussing this very show a few months ago, since LaTouche evidently reused one of his lyrics in another show.

To let me know if you will be coming to:

1.  The private get-together Sunday, June 19, 4-ish at my place.  BK, at least a few HHW-ers, and some other scintillating folk.  A perfect opportunity to grab some face-time with BK.

2.  The signing/reading, Monday, June 20, 7 p.m. at St. James Episcopal, 11511 SW Bull Mtn. Rd.

If you need directions to either/both, let me know.  BK wants hordes of people at the reading, so do your part!!

I can remember many memorable moments from the Olympics because they aired constantly at home growing up since my family were all so sports-oriented:

Wilma Rudolph blowing away the women's field in sprint events.

Don Schollander (whom I had a HUGE, HUGE crush on) winning four golds in swimming.

I remember watching Joe Frazier and George Foreman win their gold medals in boxing at successive Olympics. (Foreman walked around the ring waving a tiny little American flag after he won; in direct contrast to the two African-American track athletes who raised their black-gloved fists in protest when they won their medals.)

Lots of women's gymnastics: Olga Korbut's stunning debut and then the next night stumbling on the same uneven bar routine that she had triumphed in the night before. Mary Lou Retton scoring that perfect 10 and winning her overall gold medal. The men's team so full of hunky gold medalists (Mitch Gaylord, Bart Connor, etc.)

And, of course, figure skating. I've seen all the contests since Peggy Fleming's 1968 triumph. Remember Dorothy Hamill's 1976 win the clearest, Linda Fratianne's unfairly lost contest in 1980, John Curry's stunning routine in 1976, and the Battle of the Brians: Boitano and Orser in 1988, won by Boitano in the closest men's contest in history. And so many more.

And I'm not even a sports fan!  :D

Olympics Memories:

My first viewing of the Olympics were the Lake Placid games in 1960.  I was thrilled by all of it, but I really loved the skiing events.

After that, I pretty much watched summer/winter games.  My most special memories included watching Janet Lynn fall in the women's free skate.  She smiled, got up and finished.  She won the Bronze.

I remember Dorothy Hamill and Peggy Fleming winning.

I remember seeing Torville and Dean at Sarajevo in 1984 and feeling a bit underwhelmed at the Bolero because everyone had made it out to be such phenomenal skating and I thought it would be more magical.  I was much more taken with their performances in the four years between World's in 1980 and 1984.   The incredible event in that Olympics for me was Kitty and Peter Carruthers skating flawlessly and winning the Silver Medal (while the Russians, skating a more difficult, but flawed, program won the Gold).  The Carruthers' weren't given much of a chance for finishing higher than fifth.

Mark Spitz was, of course, the major Olympics phenomenon of our time.   An Olympics or two later, we had Shane Gould of Australia winning five Golds.  While he should have been leading parades after that Games, the sad truth is that he flew directly home after winning his final medal because of the terrorist attack against the Israelies in the Olympic village.

And in the 1980s, we had Eric Heiden, that phenom of the oval track, winning 5 speed skating Golds.

For me, the Olympics are always about the amateur athletes who dedicate their lives to being as good as they can at what they do.

Their dedication and their performances, their humility (yes, some are quite humble) and graciousness under duress are certainly something the world needs to witness more of.

I can think of no finer example of this than Kerri Strug's heroic vault that earned the USA women a Gold team medal in gymnastics.

I cannot speak for TCB, but I know who Paige Davis is.  My "EXACTLY" was sarcasm related to TCB's "Who is Paige Davis?"

Z CHANNEL- I figured you woudn't dig that candied up footage, BK. Shots of dandelions or highways or trees or whatever, but I guess they had to show something during those audio-interview passages. The crisp footage from actual movies is pretty awesome though.

The thing that's sad is that HBO/Cinemax/Showtime, etc. with what, thirty channels between them, don't have a single channel in the league of what Z Channel had. And even the more "artsy" cable channels don't approach Z's scope.

The story of Z Channel fits my developing thesis that the only place for eclecticism in a capitalist society is beneath the wheels.

Quote
Andrew Lloyd Webber's newest musical, The Woman in White, has canceled its pre-Broadway engagement in Chicago.

The Chicago Tribune reports that the musical — currently playing London's Palace Theatre — has canceled its previously announced engagement at Chicago's LaSalle Bank Theatre. Woman in White, which features a score by Lloyd Webber and David Zippel, was to have played the Chicago theatre Nov. 15, 2005-Jan. 8, 2006.

A spokesperson for the musical told Playbill.com that Woman in White will now arrive on Broadway in October at the Marquis Theatre, current home of the revival of La Cage aux Folles. The musical's official opening night is scheduled for Nov. 17. Although no casting has been announced, it is likely that Olivier Award winner Maria Friedman will repeat her London role as Marian on Broadway.

That is she...Mindy Paige Davis Page.  Her husband was the candelabra in "Beauty and the Beast."

For her fans, I'm thrilled for her.

But as "hostess" of "Trading Spaces" (the one who nagged and nitpicked and questioned and second-guessed and held the purse strings for the "designers"), I found her obnoxiously perky and cheery.  She pranced around all the time, did plies, etc.  She drove me away from watching the show, she did (well, that and the fact that Vern Yip never came back).

The only Olympic memory that really sticks out to me is when the Women's Gymnastics won the gold in 96. One of the girls on the team was born in Greenfield which is where I went to Grade school so it was a huge deal. The signs in Greenfield even say "Home of Jayce Phelps Olympic Gold Medal Winner" even though it is more importantly the hometown of James Whitcomb Riley.

Oh...

And I do have to say that Mr. Spitz has done a very nice job of maintaining his physique.  I do have to say it has been a bit deflating meeting Mr. Louganis a few years ago.  It was also a bit disheartening to discover the reason the line would stop for a few minutes every now and then: smoke break.  However, considering the various other personal battles and demons he's had to deal with... OK - I'm outta here for a while...

Laundry - Must have clean pit clothes tonight.

Then Lunch with my friend, Leigh.  We're heading to some place called The Corner Bistro in McLean.  She loves it - and that's saying something.  It's one of those "small plates" places serving a variety of tapas, antipasti and mezze.  -And, apparently, a very nice wine selection too - which I will most likely not be partaking of... however, on a day like this, maybe some sangria would be nice.

In any case...

Well, Miss Davis is playing Maria for Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera, and I say good for her!  Many of my friends and several of my least favorite folk have worked there.  Miss Davis, whose work I d not know, may get good or lousy reviews, but I'm sure she had some strong competition and made the cut.  I don't believe she's been cast totally on her "Trading spaces" reputation.  However, I've been wrong before.

I'm gonna climb on a soapbox here for a second because I think the folk on this board are good people, rather sophisticated, and not a part of the general population I loathe and refer to as the halt, the lame, and the maimed.  It's people I like and humanity I generally dislike.

I need to tell you something:  the people you watch, like, and loathe in the media aren't often who they are.  They're manipulated by the media, the program producers and directors, and to some degree they're acting all the time they're in the public eye.  Soap actors don't in real life commit adultery, murder, kidnapping and other outrageous acts (well, sometimes, but it's usually drugs) but their fans can't often separate the program's reality from the actor's reality.  On THE APPRENTICE and other reality shows, the producers  and director decide how to manipulate both their casts and the audiences; I suspect sometimes they cast the persons who fit the spot they need to fill.

A wealthy old lady decides to go on a photo safari in Africa, taking her faithful aged poodle named Cuddles, along for the company.

One day the poodle starts chasing butterflies and before long, Cuddles discovers that she's lost.

Wandering about, she notices a leopard heading rapidly in her direction with the intention of having lunch.

The old poodle thinks, "Oh, oh! I'm in deep doo-doo now!"

Noticing some bones on the ground close by, she immediately settles down to chew on the bones with her back to the approaching cat.

Just as the leopard is about to leap, the old poodle exclaims loudly, "Boy, that was one delicious leopard!
I wonder if there are any more around here?"

Hearing this, the young leopard halts his attack in mid-strike, a look of terror comes over him and he slinks away into the trees.   "Whew!", says the leopard,   "That was close! That old poodle nearly had me!"

Meanwhile, a monkey who had been watching the whole scene from a near by tree, figures he can put this knowledge to good use and trade it for protection from the leopard.  So off he goes, but the old poodle sees him heading after the leopard with great speed, and figures that something must be up. The monkey soon catches up with the leopard, spills the beans and strikes a deal for himself with the leopard.  The young leopard is furious at being made a fool of and says, "Here, monkey, hop on my back and see what's going to happen to that conniving canine!"

Now, the old poodle sees the leopard coming with the monkey on his back and thinks, "What am I going to do now?", but instead of running, the dog sits down with her back to her attackers, pretending she hasn't seen them yet, and just when they get close enough to hear, the old poodle says: "Where's that damn monkey?   I sent him off an hour ago to bring me another leopard!"

Moral of this story..

Don't mess with old farts...age and treachery will always overcome youth and skill! B.S. and brilliance only come with age and experience!

Well said!!  I couldn't abide Tom Hanks in Bosom Buddies, but Philadelphia, Apollo Thirteen, A League of Their Own, Cast Away, Big (and I must admit a guilty pleasure, The 'burbs) amongst others  have given me an appreciation of his talent and he is now one of my favorite actors. If I was to judge his talent and ability on  Turner & Hooch and refused to see any more of his work based upon that  I would have deprived myself of many fine performances and enjoyable movies

I've been up for a while, but bombarded with stuff.

Billy Strayhorn was, of course, listed as orchestrator on Beggar's Holiday.

They are trimming trees in front of my home environment today, because they are touching the power lines.  The city pays for it, but I hope they don't go nuts with the trimming.  I suspect it's going to get very very loud here in the next couple of days.

TOD:  I don't know whether it's failing memory or just indifference, but I have remember an Olympic memory.

I've actually been to a Live Olympic Event when they were held here in LA back in whenever...A neighbour at the time, whose name I don't even remember, enlisted me to go with her when she had tickets for the Diving Event.  I wasn't thrilled with the idea, but I figured what the Hell, I could say I once had been to the Olympics.  And LA was fairly delightful at the time, because as DR Lurie pointed out, many anticipating a crush had gotten out of town.  Traffic was probably the best it had been.  We drove downtown and parked at the Music Center, where one then caught a special bus over to Exposition Park.  I think I was more intrigued by the locale (to which I had never been) than the event itself.  We were not seeing the final competition...but some really low-end athletes.  Egypt? Diving?  I think the athlete got 4's across the board from the judges.  And a lot of other countries like that.  But that's all I really remember of the day. I might have a program somewhere around here.

When I was a kid and there were only three stations, the Olympics were a fairly big family viewing deal...I liked the skiing and figure skating in the winter games.  Gymnastics and diving in the summer games.  But still have no distinct memories of any one big moment.

Of course, the biggest question on BEGGAR'S HOLIDAY is how much Duke Ellington actually wrote since evidence seems to indicate Ellington's ghostwriter Billy Strayhorn was the only one around.

In trying to find the answers to the trivia contest, I found a website that said that most of the show was written by Strayhorn.

Ellington and Strayhorn had a curious sexual and working relationship; I suspect Strayhorn put up with it for the work, the sex, and a semblance of celebrity, and Ellington needed Strayhorn for the talent he was taking advantage of.  A kinder person might suggest they were two halves of one talent, but I believe Strayhorn was the greater half.

Good Afternoon!

Back from lunch with my friend, Leigh - who is no relation to DR vixmom's Leigh.

The Corner Bistro truly is a corner bistro.  A few small tables, a bar, and an open kitchen - which is an open kitchen by default due to the size of the space.  A very nice menu of small plates, and quite an impressive cocktail and wine list.  We had mussels, calamari, croquetas (ham and chicken), artichoke hearts, chorizo and merguez in small dishes all over the table.  All very good, and quite reasonably priced too.  The place is run by the same folks who run the bigger French restaurant next door, Le Petit Mistral - which explained the extensive wine list.

We had a great catch up session, and we're now up to date on each other's lives.  We also found out that we've had another friend in common for about five years, but we just never connected the dots until now.  The theatrical world truly is a small one.

After lunch, I decided to drive around the neighborhood for a while.  It's been years since I've been to that part of northern Virignia, McLean.  I used to hang out in that area all the time when I was younger, but, again, it's been years since I've been back.

WOW!  I actually came across a bunch of the places I remember, but I also came across a lot of "new growth".  Like a lot of suburban areas, they seem to be squeezing in buildings where I didn't think any more buildings could be squeezed.  -Of course, they're putting up new stores and offices, but not really keeping up with the road improvements or the parking.  Especially the parking.

But it was cool driving around for a bit and seeing some of my old haunts.

*I did make a stop into a Balducci's - which took over the local chain, Sutton Place Gourmet.  I was not impressed.  This location seemed like it should be slightly smaller than it is, or bigger.  It's very medium-sized - and felt very "medium".

-Just an observation.

Just read this on Playbill.com:

"Film and television star Eddie Murphy has joined the cast of the upcoming film of the hit Broadway musical Dreamgirls.

Comingsoon.net reports that Murphy will play James "Thunder" Early in the film, the role created on Broadway by Cleavant Derricks. Derricks won a 1982 Tony Award for his performance.

The Dreamworks/Warner Bros. film of the Henry Krieger-Tom Eyen musical is scheduled to begin shooting in January 2006 in Los Angeles. As previously announced, the cast will include pop star Beyonce as Deena Jones, the character loosely based on the life of pop singer Diana Ross. Also cast are recent Academy Award winner Jamie Foxx as Curtis Taylor Jr. and Usher as songwriter C.C. White. An open call for the demanding role of Effie will be held June 18."

I read on another forum that among those being considered for Effie is former American Idol Fantasia Barrino. Now, I noticed that Fantasia had gained some weight between her victory last year and now, but I also read that the makers are re-thinking the character of Effie deemphasizing her weight problems. That should make for an "interesting" DREAMGIRLS.

I love wihen a company sends out a mailing to tell you that for your convenience and in order to give you the best  possible quality they're decreasing their services.  I just got such a notice from Adelphia, my cable provider.  Seems they're adding a few channels but taking away a lot more.  The ones they are adding seem to be most  ESPN sports channels and stuff like Fox Reality...the very thought of which makes my skin crawl.  Most of the stuff we're losing is really stuff I watch but they sounded more interesting...like BMania (bad "B" or C" films) than what's being added.  We are also losing American Life TV (formerly Goodlife channel) which showed all the old Warner detective and cowboy shows like Sunset Strip and Cheyenne, hosted by Nick Clooney.  They are also getting rid of all the Showtime, HBO, and Encore eastern-time feeds, which I quite liked...because if I flip to a movie in the middle, I knew it was going to repeat lately on the west coast or the east coast.

I just finished scoring "Panache," and when I get back from my librarians' dinner, I'll look over it to make any minor changes.  About 7 years ago, when I was working on something at Tams-Witmark, I suggested to librarian Dale Kugel that he and our friend Charlie Harman have dinner one night when I was in the Village for a New York city Gay Men's Chorus rehearsal.  This began a second-Monday-of-the-month dinner, and when the Chorus moved rehearsals from the Village to Midtown, we moved the date to the second Tuesday of the month.  Now the music dept. from Rodgers & Hammerstein joins us, the librarian who replaced Dale when he retired, and any other lucky person we invite.   Sometimes it's Jeff Stock who wrote TRIUMPH OF LOVE. maybe Roger Grodsky from the University of cincinnati Conservatory of Music musical theatre dept., and tonight, who knows?  And now to the Village.

The grandlads were fine today.  Very little in the way of squabbles or disobedience.

Their parents, on the other hand, are a couple of blockheads.  Yes, they will do things for the kids, like Little League or Cub Scouts, and PTA.  Well, it's really Mom that does all those things; Dad does the cooking (barely) and goes along with the Little League coaching, but doesn't do it happily.

What they don't do is things with the kids.  During William's "graduation" ceremony, the teacher pitched to the adults that were there that each child is being asked to have a parent read 400 pages of books to him/her over the summer.  There's points for every 25 pages, with 400 as the goal.  The idea is that the parents, reading to the kids, helps the kids get an interest in reading, and that passes on to reading skills.

Well, Mom has declared that she doesn't have the time to read to William.  She just can't be bothered, she has too much else to do.

I sat down with William today, at his request, and read a couple of small books to him, one with eightteen pages, one with eight.  Hey, that's twenty-six pages!  That's the first point, right?  And it took me less than half an hour.  We even read each book through twice (once at a normal speed, the second as fast as I could because that's our special joke).

How they deal with Alex is pretty much along the same lines.  Sure, they'll sign the kids up for summer programs.  No, they don't discuss the programs with the lads in advance, they just plan on the lads being plopped into the programs.  And der Brucer gets to do all the driving, of course.  They were a little shocked when I announced that my job comes first, and that der B will have to do the deliveries on his own.

This may be a very long summer.

We went to Disneyland just following the Olympics and there weren't any lines!! :D

I would be upset too.  I wish your missing American Life and Nick Clooney would come to us.

As I recall, the real difference between Effie and Deena is that Deena "was always the glamorous one."

In the song that leads up to Effie's Act I finale, Deena (I think) mentions that Effie has been getting fatter which she denies. But I guess some words could be changed.

Tonight was Glenn Close's swan song on the season finale of THE SHIELD, and it has been a very memorable season for her. She should definitely be Emmy nominated and for my money win the award for her work as Monica Rawling.

I plan to watch tonight's "Reno 911" season premiere.  I just bought the uncensored complete season two!  It's not completely uncensored, though.  According to the DVD packaging, "These DVDs feature uncensored language not featured in the original broadcast.  All blurs remain intact."

Damn! ;)

When I got home today, a package was waiting for me!  Last month I ordered two copies of The New Christy Minstrels' "The Wandering Minstrels" CD (one for me and one for my sister) from deepdiscountcd.com.  (On another order, they cancelled two of the three CDs that I had ordered!  How rude! >:()  Anyway, I got an e-mail on June 3rd that it had been shipped, but I just received it today.  As long as I get it, I'm not as concerned about how long it takes to get it.  I'm listening to it and it's wonderful.  It also has 10 (count 'em, 10!) bonus tracks!

Of course, it sounds so much better than my parents' vinyl album did (they got it in the 1960s).  A couple of years ago, I bought my own copy on eBay.  That sounded much better than my parents' copy, but still not as good as this CD. ;D

Rodzinski, you said that you want the album just to have it, but do you have the CD?

Now, I enjoy heat. I am not someone who complains about hot weather, but here it is not even officially summer, and is weirdly, oppressively hot. Oven-like. Hard to convey, exactly. I've been through hot spells. I've built swimming pools in Atlanta, you may recall. But right now, right here in Manhattan, USA, you walk outside and it is like a continuous hot wind just beating you into submission.

I don't have The Wandering Minstrels. It is the one NCM LP that has evaded my grasp. Once, I even found the cover and when I went to make the purchase I looked inside and it was a Tony Bennett album in there or something. Maybe Jerry Vale.  Cruel.  Though I have nothing against Jerry Vale. And now you mention bonus tracks. Hmmm....

I must face the TOD.
Well, I do remember watching the Miracle on Ice in 1980. That was pretty exciting. I remember a Greco-Roman wrestler named Jeff Blatnick winning the gold and then just bawling like a baby in the ring. I kinda thought Katarina Witt blossomed quite nicely. That was fun. That American gymnast came back to win the gold in Greece, that seemed cool, then it turned out one of the Koreans was scored incorrectly. That took away the fun. All the events that involve judging are kinda hard to enjoy nowadays. And the professionalism and commercialism have sapped away some of the other joys. I usually end up watching stuff though. Odd sports like archery.

Good Evening!

-When I got in the car after the show tonight, the first thing I heard was the weather report...

"It will be getting down to 85 degrees tonight."

DOWN to 85?!?!??!?!

And it's only the middle of June?!?!??!

UGH!

Like DR Rodzinski, I don't really mind heat that much - I guess it's a "benefit" of my Filipino heritage - but it really has just been oppressive today and yesterday.  Well, moreso today.  Even the breezes were hot today.  And the humidity.. UGH!  Like the rest of the eastern seaboard, the humidity is supposed to die down this weekend - and the temps should follow suit too.  We shall see...

*The soundman was checking out the weather report for his hometown of Miami, Florida.  It was only 83 degrees there today.  In Florida!

The show went fine.  I was sort of in a bad mood.  And they also put a new deck in yesterday, and had swapped out some sound equipment too, so my mix sounded very different.  -But the new stage deck looks great.  They're spiffing things up for the Canadian leg of the tour in a few weeks.  In any case...

I was still a bit annoyed that the contractor has yet to call me about the new schedule - the one that was sent to him on Sunday...  Apparently, I'm on for a few more shows this weekend too.  *But the assistant conductor is working with me on "something" - I'm gonna come in Sunday to play the rehearsals which are going to be held during the shows.  This way I'll get rehearsal pay AND show pay since the show pay is part of my regular "walking" scale, but the rehearsal pay comes from the company payroll.

;)

Has anyone else besides me gotten the Classic Movie Musicals set on DVD.  It's fifty count them fifty public domain musicals in one set, at about thirty-five bucks.  The quality varies from film to film, with some of them looking quite okay (The Fabulous Dorseys) to not-so-hot, but none of them is so bad you can't watch and enjoy.  There are some incredible rarities in this set - check it out at amazon - it's called Classic Musicals DVD Collection, and someone has made a complete list of the films there.  Lots of PRC quickies, Martha Tilton and Jane Frazee, some rare Duke Ellington stuff, Lena Horne's first film - it's a treasure trove, really.
