Well, you've read the notes, you've pre-ordered the new book, and now it is time for you to post until the pre-ordered cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: KINDRED!
-
And a very happy birthday for former dear reader and daughter of dear reader Laura, Sandra.
-
George just ups and disappears. I gotta tell you.
-
Good morning, all!
-
The alarm rang at 5:30 and when I woke, it was 6:20. I slept really well although the song plaguing me most of the night was the title song from Where's Charley?
Where is it he goes to visit,
Hong Kong Baluchistan or Rome?
Does Charley still nip the barley?
How many beaches can he comb?
-
I have much tidying up this morning. At 3:30 I have that zoom meeting with Doug Fullington about the ballet project.
-
I finished the budget for the recording proposal for what is essentially six recordings in four sets. We'll see if it comes through.

Good Friday morning to each of you.
I know it must be Friday where all of you are, because BK's blog entry says it's Friday.
-
I got nine blessed hours of sleep last night.
Man! It's a pleasure to have absolutely nothing to "have to" do today. There is plenty that needs doing, but I don't have to adhere to anyone's schedule, and that makes retirement the very best.
-
Good morning, all.
-
I had an almost straight-through night of sleep, but with a couple of the usual insane dream fragments that kept it from being lest than restful.
-
So it's Friday on the left coast already? I swear it should only be Thursday here in the nor'east.
-
I do remember a dream thingy, and it was Navy-related.
When I was selected to be a chief petty officer, it was a huge deal. Only a small percentage of folks get selected when they have put in the requisite number of years, have passed the test, and have had high evaluations.
To become a chief petty officer (CPO), however, the selectee usually goes through an initiation. Some folks opt out of that, but they aren't considered to be "true" chiefs by the CPO coummnity.
The initiation, when I was going through it, was harmless fun...for the other CPOs...but was good-natured enough not to intrude on my private life or detract from my professional life (where they had access to me). I had to carry a "charge book", which I would surrender upon demand to another CPO who would then proceed to write in my book whatever charge he held against me (all imagined, naturally). At the actual initiation, those charges would be read aloud to the attendees with great enthusiasm and loud guffaws would ring out.
The ceremony itself was a bit disgusting as it involved a lot of chicanery and getting splattered with raw eggs or eating something from a trough (real food, but it looked disgusting).
When all that was done, the pinning of anchors on our collars was very moving and life-changing.
All that said, my dream was about me being a selectee but being in a room with a few CPOs I never actually knew. They were talking among themselves, while I was busy cleaning their office, detailing all the things they were going to do to the selectees come initiation day. One of them said something about putting us in boxes, closing them and leaving only air holes for breathing. He said that was when we would have to sing "Anchors Aweigh" 15 times before being set free.
My dream self wasn't swallowing it for a minute, but I remembered stories I had heard about how some CPO communities had gotten in trouble for going too far in their ceremonies. Some exceeded what happened at that Tailhook convention back in the 1980s, but it only led to ensuring initiations were modified to be less offensive.
-
I have no idea what prompted my dream.

Practically out of the blue last night, I picked a three hour and twenty-one minute movie off the shelf, settled down with some pasta (with some leftover chicken thrown in) and a Coca-Cola Zero, and -- except for one break two-thirds of the way through to feed the feline -- watched the entire movie without so much as a hint of drowsiness at any point.
The movie was George Stevens' GIANT. It had been on my mind because of news of its being shown in a new 4K restoration at the TCM festival in Hollywood, and it had been a good decade or longer since I last watched it. I hesitated to start it, thinking I might end up wanting to split it into two evenings, but it turned out to be the perfect selection. There's so much I love about the film, and it was most rewarding.
As for what else is in the watch pile or the listen pile, nothing is set in stone. As is often said in these parts, "we'll see".
-
Today's the warmest day of this little group of slightly warmer days, and I have outdoors-y work to resume.
First, I'll pull the car back out to sit in the sun with the windows open and sniff those carpets to see if there's any further scrubbing needed, and I'll hopefully dig out some vinyl and leather cleaner to go over the seats with. Hopefully by then I'll be rid of any unseemly odors.
While the car is taking in the sun and fresh air, I'll try to finish the current stage of the clearing I've been doing on the little hill behind the house.
At some point I must go out and pick up a few food items, and perhaps put gas in the car. "We'll see."
-
I await announcement of the 4K "Giant" on home video.
It's an excellent film, and I would love to see it optimally presented.
-
Interesting peek behind the scenes, DR Ron Pulliam. Thanks for sharing.

Saturday is a free day, my last free day before Cinderella becomes engaged to her prince, because on Monday we're in tech week.
On Sunday I'll be at the wonderful Bedford Playhouse watching the film version of My Fair Lady in true 4K at the best possible venue, hosted by the best possible film restorer:

It is wet and gray here. I think I saw on a weather map that the West coast is going to get a whole lot of rain in the next few days.

I have grown to love Giant, which I last watched while writing the barbecue book. The barbacoa scene with the cow’s head is a document of Texas’s past. The health department has forbidden the practice and there’s only one place in Brownsville grandfathered in that still cooks up the head the old-fashioned way.
-
I also love the musical version of Giant, which manages to cram in even more of the book.
-
Martin Scorcese’s Film Foundation is starting to screen a movie a month, starting in May.

Well, so far this morning, the world sucks:
1. Yesterday I transferred two deposits from Citibank to my Santander bank account of $50.00 each. Only one has landed. Santander says it's Citibank's problem and Citibank says Santander screwed up. I just want the $50 the bastards owe me,
2. Every damned month my idiuot health insurance upgradestheir damned site and I need to jump hoops to get into it. This morning I had tyo re-register and wait for Emblem Health to email verification codes, all to pay my health isurance bill. Ridiculous.

I had rehearsal last night, came home and was going to get on my computer, but I just totally fell asleep and didn't wake up until about 2:30! So, I got myself to bed for real and now I'm up and have to go to work.

I think the word of the day should be argle-bargle, which the dictionary informs me is another term for argy-bargy.
Duly noted.
-
Friday morning greetings! Getting this in just under the wire before noon.
-
Eight of my friends were here last night to discuss THE HENNA ARTIST by Alka Joshi and to enjoy the banana cake. I was very tired after they left and crashed early.
-
Happiest of birthdays to DR Sandra!
-
Today, I have some desk work to do and a crafty Zoom tonight.

Thanks for the ear worm, DR Elmore!

Wow, we just drove past the last remaining Blockbuster Video store.

Looks like we're going to have some rain this afternoon.

The folks who backed out are seeing the house again. They have an offer on their house......so maybe it will be happening.
We put the Life Insurance Check in the bank today.

Apparently not completely dead ;)

My zoom meeting is in 15 minutes. I'm hoping it all goes well.

Vibes, Elmore.
-
The day is waning here in Johnston SC. While we are a couple of hours from complete darkness, clouds make it seem later than it is.
No rain in sight, though. Temp is 72 degrees. Tomorrow may see us in the 80s.
-
Have dined, desserted and am ready for the evening. I do hope I can find something entertaining/interesting to watch to pass the time until beddy bye.
Haven't napped today, so the idea of bedtime seems sweet.
-
Got the interior of the car even cleaner and fresher, so when I drive it tomorrow we'll see if there's any of that odor left. I do hope I got it all. Cars are a very awkward space in which to clean!
And then I attacked the hillside again, like a good General. It was late in the afternoon, so I just got one fairly small area cleared, but every little bit is an improvement.
Time for an evening. A Friday evening, to be precise.
-
Zoom went well and I will do the ballet. The pay is poor but I am well covered for the future of it.
-
Congrats to DR ELMORE.
-
I got a very nice Bill Blass Sports Jacket at the Goodwill for $7.99.....less my 10% discount ....
Sports jacket has plastic buttons....a blazer has metal buttons.....just in case you ever wanted to know the difference.

After two nights of barely sleeping I can barely keep my eyes open. Keith slept even fewer hours in the last two days.

We managed our shortish afternoon walk before heading over to help set up a goodbye party for the complex manager. Almost everyone is sad he is leaving. I hope he will be very happy in his new job. Having been a contractor he was extremely knowledgeable and helpful.

Taking a break from Nero Wolfe and watching Harold Lloyd in Speedy, a great silent film with Babe Ruth in a supporting role. Fun stuff.
-
The book I'm listening to right now is called Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe. It's by Benjamin Alire Saenz,, and it's set in El Paso. I was telling a friend at work today about it, because she's from El Paso. It turns out that Saenz had been married to her cousin, a judge in El Paso, but they divorced when he came out.
She wasn't sure until she saw a picture of him on Google. His Wikipedia page even refers to his having been married to a judge.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benjamin_Alire_S%C3%A1enz
-
Turns out most of her family ostracized Saenz because he's gay, which he uses in the book to describe how a family treats an aunt. .
-
Just a few more.
Liv Ullmann as "Mama" sang to always give "A Little Bit More."

BK, that's Maureen Silliman playing the "I" in "I Remember Mama" 1979.

Happy Birthday, Sandra!
-
Hi-ho, hi ho!
-
Good grief! The Three Faces of Eve meets the Seven Dwarfs!
-
It appears that it is Friday again.
-
Actually, it is almost Saturday.
-
In won’t be long until it is Sunday.
-
And soon as that day is done, it is Monday and time to go back to work!
-
Only a retired person could be this cruel.
-
Back from a very good show - a couple of mic issues, but other than that, very smooth and we had a wonderful audience and much larger than last Friday's paltry Passover crowd. Some even got up and danced at the end, which we love. Very light for tomorrow night, though, so I'm going to see what I can do about that.
-
Taking my friend, Diane, out for her birthday tomorrow. She wants breakfast. Good God, the sacrifices we make for our friends!
-
Come to think of it, if we stop taking each other out for our birthdays, we would never see each other. So much for our friendship.
-
I have actually set my alarm for tomorrow morning. So, good night, my friends.
-
Taking a break from Nero Wolfe and watching Harold Lloyd in Speedy, a great silent film with Babe Ruth in a supporting role. Fun stuff.
A couple of years ago, the silent movie series with live organ music at the Washington Center for Performing Arts showed Speedy and it was great!
