Title: DRIED FRUIT
Post by: bk on June 15, 2005, 11:59:57 PM
Well, you've read the notes, you've kicked some dried fruit, and now it is time for you to post until the dried cows come home.  To it, I say.

"The Innocents" is my favourite "ghost tale. ("The Turn Of The Screw").
The film is everything "The Others" is not.
I have no desire to see the remake of "The Innocents".

"The Innocents" is my favourite "ghost tale. ("The Turn Of The Screw").

When I was going to college in Bellingham, WA (which is just south of the US/Canada border), we would go the final dress rehearsals (http://www.vancouveropera.ca/education/studentdress.html) of Vancouver Opera (http://www.vancouveropera.ca/) for only $5 American!  (The price has since gone up ;))  One time we saw Benjamin Britten's The Turn of the Screw.  I hadn't seen a lot of operas at that time but it was one of the most incredible theater experiences that I ever had.  I was absolutely riveted.  The singers, of course, were wonderful, but the staging and set were very simply done, but so effective.  I've never seen another production of it, but I know that  if I do, I probably won't feel the same way.

Please beware of any e-mail that purports to be from this site.  Especially if it's signed "the haineshisway support team".  It is spam, and do NOT open the attachment, as it is a virus.

I haven't gotten any e-mail like that...so far.  I have gotten e-mails that seem to have bounced back to me (as the sender) except that I never sent those e-mails that came back!  Fortunately, it's not an e-mail address that I use very much, so I could easily delete it and create a new one.  I'm seriously thinking about that anyway since that e-mail address is getting a lot of spam...and the amount's been increasing lately.  I hate it when that happens. :P

Goodnight George. Hello Jose.

Good Morning!

Ghost stories...

The only things that come to mind right now are "Like Water for Chocolate" and "The Other" and "The Others"  - those are two (three) different things aren't they?

Oh, and I guess "The Secret Garden"...

I need to sleep on this one.... shortly...

Now, in fact.

Goodnight.

Good morning, all!  It seems quite lovely out this morning; the temperature has dropped, and I slept quite well last night. Today is my second visit to the surgeon after the surgery.  It's officially four weeks now, and we'll see how it's going.  Then, it's another DARLING OF THE DAY workday.

TOD:
  Short stories:
     Le Fanu:  Schalken the Painter
Irving: The Legend of Sleepy Hollow
     Dickens: A Christmas Carol
M.R. James:  Oh, Whistle and I'll Come to You, My Lad

  Novels:  Macardle:  The Uninvited
             Straub:  Ghost Story
             Hill:  The Woman in Black

  Music:   Dvorak: The Spectre's Bride
Britten:  The Turn of the Screw
             Wagner:  The Flying Dutchman

  Film:    The Innocents
             The Uninvited

  Plays:    The Innocents
              The Woman in Black

While I like very much the Britten TURN OF THE SCREW and the film adaptation of Jack Clayton's, based on William Archibald's play, I can't say I think much of the original Henry James story, which is like reading a ghost story in smoke signals:  you're not certain you're catching everything before the wind blows the words away.  I find the story's critical psychoanalysis much more fascinating.

Two films come to mind for the top.

The Haunting (The Robet Wise original)
Less is More
The Legend of Hell House
Much like The Haunting. Small cast, a house and a mystery

How could I have forgotten Shirley Jackson's THE HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE and its great film adaptation?  Senility? Sunspots?

TOD:  Other DRs have already mentioned most of my favorites.  Of the classic, romance-type ghost stories, I can add only Portrait of Jennie.  For sheer fun, there's Poltergeist, which is an amusement park ride of a ghost story.  And my favorite ghost comedy is Beetlejuice.

Has anyone seen the preview for Tim Burton's The Corpse Bride?  That one looks like fun.

Favorite ghost movies:

GHOST OF DRAGSTRIP HOLLOW
BEES SAAL BAAD
GHOST AND MRS. MUIR

I know I have read some ghost stories but can't think of a single title this early in the morning.

              Ghost Story with Fred Astaire

There are a couple of books but I can't think of the titles althoughthe plot lines are clea in my mind.... let me have a cup of coffee and see if I can get the brain started whilst I catch up on last nights postings

Well, I'm back from the surgeon and feeling somewhat better; he says everything's healing fine.  My last visit is in a month:  I'm off to DC the last week of June and then he's off for two weeks to Hawaii (20th wedding anniversary).  He's a very good man, and I hope he has a great holiday.

THE GHOST AND MRS MUIR, TOPPER, BEETLEJUICE!  What's run away with my mind?

I do not remember the movies of the Ghost & Mrs. Muir or Topper although I know I saw them at one time, but both TV  series were favorites of mine when I was knee high to a grasshopper.

Great news, DR elmore  :-*

Missed being here with all of you yesterday - it was a packed work day for me.  Today is much more relaxed - all the managers are in a meeting upstairs!

It's cloudy here in SW Ohio, but blessedly cool after about a week of oppressive humidity.

My favorite ghost story involves DH Richard's paternal grandmother, a lifelong Anglophile.  She lived in Ohio until she was widowed shortly after Richard's parents were married (early 1940's).  She then moved to California to live near her daughter and had a lifelong unfulfilled dream to visit England.  When she died in CA, she was cremated, and her remains were to be flown back to Ohio for burial near her husband.  Richard's father and uncle went to the Cincinnati airport to claim her ashes.  The package did not arrive on the scheduled flight and they had to wait some time for it to be found.  When the airline personnel traced the package, they determined that it had come from California to Ohio by way of.........

England.

DRs MBarnum and Dan (the Man) have named my two favorite movie ghost stories: THE GOST AND MRS. MUIR and PORTRAIT OF JENNIE. The latter is probably my all-time favorite. Also a BIG fan of Robert Wise's THE HAUNTING.

I happen to like THE OTHERS very much, much more so than THE SIXTH SENSE.

I only saw THE INNOCENTS once on TV many years ago chopped up by TV commercials, and it didn't play well under those conditions. I look forward to reinvestigating it upon its DVD release.

Of all the great American fiction writers, I find Henry James the hardest to "get." In college, quite a few of his writings were required reading, but I found I suffered and endured them rather than enjoying them. Like DR Elmore, I did not particularly enjoy reading "The Turn of the Screw."

Re: the comments yesterday about how easy to read the Light in The Piazza  booklet.

Reading today's notes made me think of the comments made yesterday re: Light In the Piazza.  It also made me think of the new Spelling Bee booklet.  While I love many parts of it (the synopsis, along with where the songs fit in, the lyrics ...), it is quite hard to read.  I do like the dark blue coloring.  But does anybody else find the opening pages extremely difficult to read.  I know they had to make the typeset small. But why would they approve it if it's that hard to read.

I also like Tom Tryon's THE OTHER and also Sir Arthur's THE HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES.

Exotica that might be apropo includes:  THE FROZEN GHOST, ON BORROWED TIME, and PHANTOM OF THE OPERA.

PLACEBO, baby, PLACEBO!

Seeing The Innocents on TV cannot possibly work because it would have been pan-and-scan, and this film cannot be seen that way.  And, of course, commercials would completely ruin it further.

I've been going since 9:15.  Tammy will be here in ninety minutes - I also have to go to storage and get another chart for the Sondheim benefit.  I thought this afternoon might be a bit calmer, but no.  It's all good, though.

BUT my favorite film/play about ghosts was also mentioned, but I will say it again just because it's so darn good:  BLITHE SPIRIT!

Everyone keeps mentioning THE SECRET GARDEN because the musical added a lot of dead folk, but I remember no ghosts in any film or the original book.  I'm not being pedantic, just clarifying things because I always thought THE SECRET GARDEN ripped off the ghosts from FOLLIES, the greatest musical ever written about ghosts!

I'm pissed because I cannot believe I forgot BLITHE SPIRIT, one of my alltime favorite plays and movies; I like the musical version, HIGH SPIRITS, as well.

Happy birthday to DR George's mom.

I've never eaten at an Applebee's.  Are they an all-foods kind of place or do they specialize in a particular style of food?

if you go back to DR George's and clicked on the blue "Applebee's " it will take you to their menu  :D

I never saw the musical because it closed before I could get there, but I am very familar with the book and no, no ghosts.  Also the uncle is a very minor character, has a brief appearance in one of the early chapters and then dissappears until the last one.

NEW Dame Andrews' news  (She sure is NOT a dried fruit!)

June 13th 2005 (www.theday.com by Kristina Dorsey)
Julie Andrews Honored At Goodspeed With Rhyme, Song
East Haddam — Everyone had effusive words of praise for Julie Andrews at the Goodspeed Gala honoring her Saturday night. Christopher Plummer, however, took it one step further. He put his accolades and comic recollections of his “Sound of Music” co-star into a rhyming ode.

Plummer's tribute was part of an evening during which Goodspeed Musicals gave Andrews the Goodspeed Award for Outstanding Contribution to Musical Theatre. His poem's clever couplets drew lots of laughter from the 400 people at the gala, including Andrews.

Plummer recalled that, back in the 1950s, Andrews' performance on Broadway as Eliza Doolittle in “My Fair Lady” was impressing everyone, including Plummer himself. Director Moss Hart was looking for an actor to take over for Rex Harrison in the Henry Higgins role. He suggested Plummer as a potential replacement.

“But he had to hear me sing first, and that was not treat/For the sound I made resembled a rhinoceros in heat... ” Plummer recited from the text he said he wrote in the car on the way to the gala. “Though Mr. Hart liked my Higgins, and that's the truth/I didn't get it simply because of my youth.”

Plummer didn't meet Andrews then. A few years later, another possible role in another musical starring Andrews gave him yet another glimmer of hope.

“Suddenly, Moss Hart was directing ‘Camelot'/And he thought I'd make a good Lancelot/So I sang for him again, the poor, long-suffering soul./That's why Robert Goulet got the role.

“Well, that just about reached the very end of my tether/Until you know what finally brought us together?/To play opposite Guenevere and Eliza would have been such fun./What did I get instead? For God's sake, a nun.

“But this nun was different, she was hysterically funny./Her irreverent humor was right on the money./When she sang, her golden voice brought the evening's hush./But sometimes, her language could make a stevedore blush.”

On a serious note, Plummer described Andrews as “a lady with an exceptional heart/Which keeps shining through her life and her art.”

Andrews is in East Haddam to direct “The Boy Friend.” After a run at Goodspeed, from July 8 to Sept. 18, the show will go on the road for 21 weeks. Andrews starred in the original version of the musical on Broadway, in 1954. It was the show that brought her to America.

“There is nothing like musical theater. I was lucky enough to begin my career in this glorious sandbox,” she said.

Before the gala began, Andrews noted that the Goodspeed award “comes from people who know musical theater and appreciate musical theater. When it comes from somebody like that, it's always very meaningful.”

Another of Andrews' former co-stars took the stage as well. Rachel York, who performed with Andrews in Broadway's “Victor/Victoria,” sang Andrews' praises, literally. She sang “It's a holly holiday with Mary” from “Mary Poppins” but changed the lyrics to “It's a jolly holiday with Julie.”

The gala was held in the Goodspeed's paint shop, which was transformed into an elegant dinner room, with delicate strings of small white lights and swags of gossamer fabric. Photos of Andrews in some of her most famous roles were projected onto the walls. Among the guests in attendance were Morley Safer of “60 Minutes,” U.S. Sen. Christopher J. Dodd, and Andrews' daughter, Emma Walton, and her family.

Happy Birthday to Mother-of-George!

Thanks, vixmom and JRand, for your comments about my ghost story.  Not everybody in Richard's family likes it - one of the other grandchildren used to cover her ears whenever it was told.

I just finished reading the book my group is discussing tonight - Bold Spirit:  Helga Estby's Forgotten Walk Across Victorian America, by Linda Lawrence Hunt - which raises the issue of supressed family stories.  In fact, the last chapter is titled, "A Reflection on the Silencing of Family Stories."

Watched THE DAMNED DON'T CRY and thoroughly enjoyed it again (it's been quite some time since I've seen it). Just makes me wish Warners would get busy and give us more of her outings: TORCH SONG, THIS WOMAN IS DANGEROUS, GOODBYE MY FANCY, FLAMINGO ROAD.

The DVD of THE DAMNED DON'T CRY is shockingly beautiful - not a tear or splice any place. It looks as good as some of their more celebrated black and white outings. The source material was obviously in pristine shape since it's clear Warners wasn't going to waste any restoration money on this little known movie.

I started going through some of the detritus (to use a former Word of the Day) on my desk...  Then that led to checking through some of my mail just to make sure I hadn't missed anything...  Then I decided to put up the new shower curtain liner that I bought over the weekend... Then...

So... No retail therapy.  Yet.  The stores don't close until 10:00.  And Macy's is open until 11:00 tonight!

I cannot possibly begin to imagine what that might include.

Well, there's two ways to answer this 'query'...  ;D

The second way to answer it would be...

Chicken - Either poached and shredded, or grilled and shredded/cut up into pieces.
Vegetables - Carrots, cucumbers
Cilantro
Rice noodles (vermicelli) or bean thread, or rice
Sauce - Either the traditional caramel sauce with some nuoc nam, soy and/or vinegar.
Crushed peanuts for a garnish.
And maybe some lettuce leaves on the side to roll the above contents in for your own hand rolls.

Sounds good to me!

National taste is plummeting this week!  I'm appalled by general low mentality of the world these days:  I just heard there will now be a tv movie over that psycho case "the runaway bride," just when I thought this new reality show hosted by Paris Hilton's mother on how to have Klass was the nadir.  I wonder if she'll give tips on selling your own private sex video?  One thing's certain:  the mother of a total bimbo is working with a lot of others.

SHE shouldn't be allowed to sell her story.  It's the potential groom whose story needs telling...he's the one they put at the top of the list as a suspect in her alleged "murder"...he's the one who was wronged.

And now for something completely different:

Last Sunday, I was only mildly interested that a 5.2 earthquake struck Riverside County south of LA.

Tuesday, I was alert and pensive about the 7.0 earthquake off the coast above us (and the subsequent tsunami alarms).

Today, however, I am getting paranoid.  A 5.3 earthquake hit San Bernadino County, east of L.A.  It was felt as far south as San Diego.

They're surrounding us...and we're in the middle of several major faults.

Things are moving, and I'm a wonderin' if a biggun is on the horizon...!

Picked up some packages today, one of which was an eBay item, a really rare first edition of Eric Ambler's A Coffin for Demitrius.  Unfortunately, it is NOT a first edition.  Not only is it NOT a first edition, it's a worthless BOOK CLUB edition, and that is clearly stated on the dust jacket.  The seller advertised it clearly as a first edition.

Luckily, paypal is really good about this kind of stupidity.  I called them, they had me instantly fill out a claim, and the amount of money I paid the guy has now been frozen in his paypal account until resolution.  I'm hoping he will do the right thing (I've written him, and I've spoken to his wife who told me to call back in a bit when the seller is home) and just credit the money back.  If he is some yahoo and wants to be a jerk, then I have to go to Bookfellows this Saturday, have them look at the book and then write a note on their letterhead stating the book is not as advertised and worthless.  I then fax that to paypal, and they will immediately credit the money back into my account.  So annoying.  these stupid people who don't understand anything about what they're selling are the bane of eBay.  I'll keep you posted.

THAT is a GREAT movie!  But if memory serves, it was William Shatner who was the suvivor.  Or it's possible I'm getting it mixed up with another movie.  Maybe it was Richard Basehart but I keep seeing Shatner in my minds eye.

Close to dinnertime, so here's an update:

Steaks, simply grilled.

Baked 'taters (in the oven now), with some cheese, some spring onions, some sour cream, some butter...the works.

Spinach, sauteed down, with mushrooms and bacon crumbles, and a little garlic.

This is what I call a no-effort meal.

Next week will be fun week.  Der Brucer is on grandlad duty all week, transporting them to their different summer camps (Alex goes farming, William plays soccer).  Meanwhile, I've got a work schedule that's totally in the air.  Meanwhile, on Monday Night, there's a Log Cabin Delaware meeting being held in town THAT WE ONLY LEARNED ABOUT YESTERDAY!!!  Hopefully, my schedule won't conflict too much.  But der B will be lucky to get there an hour late.  If, that is, his daughter doesn't insist on talking his ear off and holding him up.

We're both torked off enough with her, as it is.  She thinks our car smells too much of dog, and it makes us smell like dogs.  That's why she sprayed our car with some anti-smell stuff.  The car now smells like a French whorehouse.  Any vibular bitch-slaps in her direction will be appreciated.   :P

Re: quake.  I saw a neighbour's window rattle for about two seconds while I was walking the dog.  I felt nothing.  I thought the shaking window was either a quake or someone having raucous sex beyond the curtains.  What was really amazing was coming home and, while eating lunch, watching all the news channels like CNN and Fox all over it.  You just want to say to them, this no reaction out here at all and everyone goes on with their business.

We started watching "Guys and Dolls" last night.  I don't think I have ever seen it before (certainly not in colour!).  Brando is so WRONG.

I disagree. I think he's perfect casting IF he could sing. That, sadly, he's not very good at.

I don't believe Sinatra and Blaine for a second. I think HE'S the bad casting. Of course, it's common knowledge he wanted the part of Sky and didn't really put much effort in playing Nathan.

I would do anything for love,
But I won't do that......

But I LOVE MeatLoaf!!!!

When I was a Tour Guide for Walt Disney World, one of my colleagues had to VIP Mr Meatloaf who ended up a rude "customer". He asked to have another Tour Guide with him and almost got my colleague fired!

Anyhow, I was overlooked most of the time when it came to VIPs!(That's what one gets for not being American in the first place!) The few ones I got ( Mike Connors...) were darlings!

So...

After leaving the theatre, I decided to drive up to the Adams Morgan neighborhood and walk around for bit, grab a bite to eat. Gorgeous night out!

I ended up at the historic Ben's Chili Bowl.  I've passed it many times, but never been in.  I got a classic meal of a Chili-Dog, Cheese Fries and an Iced Tea.  Very good.  And very non-greasy for a greasy spoon.

http://www.benschilibowl.com

Then it was over to the Love Cafe for some dessert.  Well, desserts. ;)  The place is the cafe for the Cakelove bakery across the street.  So, let's see what they put in my box of goodies

Cupcakes:  Chocolate Cake dipped in Chocolate Ganache, Chocolate Cake with Lime Buttercream, Chocolate Cake with Amaretto Buttercream and Slivered Almonds, Yellow Cake with Fresh Strawberry Buttercream; and one "Crunchy Feet" (foot?) - a mini  pound cake with buttercream.

:)

And, no, I have not ate all of them.  Yet.

;)

I've got a sweet tooth, baby.  I'm trying to be good, but I may have to give in, oh, yes, I may have to give in.  But, I've only eaten a BLT and fries all day (well, some popcorn, too).  We shall see.

I've been nosing around the kritzerland site - I'm really liking a lot of it.  There are some things to fix, but it all works as it should.

Okay, Mac users.  When I try to open a video clip, I'm presented with a download window - it then takes three minutes to load the clip, puts it on my desktop, and THEN opens the player and plays.  When I had someone else test it, it streamed fine, like it should.  So, do I have to set something differently in preferences?  I've had this problem at amazon occasionally when trying to play their audio clips - instead of just getting the player and it buffering or whatever it's supposed to do, I get the download window and it puts it on my desktop.

Thank you Elmore, Danise and Jane for your birthday/anniversary wishes for my mother/parents!  And everyone else, too!

Applebee's was as good as usual.  Everyone had something different, except my dad and I (both named George, as a matter of fact) had the chicken fried steak.  Not enough gravy (there never is...but what was there was very good) and I don't like the mixed vegetables, but overall everyone had a good meal.  Afterwards, my niece and I went to Shari's and bought a couple of pies (one was Oreo and the other was apple) and we brought them to my parents' for dessert.  I wanted to get dessert at Applebee's, but for some reason, no one did.  Anyway, each dessert at Applebee's cost almost as much as a whole pie at Shari's!  It was a good choice, financially.  And the pies were pretty good, so I didn't really mind.  That was my evening.

For my mom's gift, my sister bought a garden angel made of concrete (I think, or something like it).  Ever since she retired, my mom has been working in her garden and it's beautiful.  She said that any garden item will be a perfect gift, so that's what we get her.  ;D

Well, starting tonight, I'm house-sitting again...at the same house as I did last month:  the house without a DVD player or computer. :P I'm staying there until Tuesday morning, but it will NOT prevent me from attending the 2005 Portland HHW Gathering!  I will be there (and bearing edible gifts)!!

Tomorrow, I'm driving my friend Margo to the SeaTac airport, so I won't be at work at all.  I also will not have any access to a computer until I come home later in the evening and check in.

So, for tomorrow's Topic of the Day:

In my VCR:  a tape to tape tomorrow night's "Whose Line Is It Anyway?" episodes on ABC Family Channel.  (I LOVE this show!)

In my DVD player:  nothing, since the house I'm house-sitting has no DVD player (how many times can I announce that?? ;))

In my CD player:  actually, I'll drive Margo to the airport in her car and she has a CD player, so I'm going to bring the original Broadway cast recording of Shenandoah that I just got in the mail today!  I've had the album for years, but never listened to it. :-[ I'll have to bring some other stuff to listen to, to be determined. ;D

I guess that's it for now.  Have a good evening all...and a good day tomorrow!

As for your sweettooth... The cupcakes are mine!

As for your Mac issue...  I've sort of had the same problem, but I think it's more related to how each website has their media options set up. Some sites I go to, the audio and video clips are only downloadable -I guess that saves bandwidth for them.  Other times, they stream right there.

Let me check around..

WHUT!

He was a man, just a man...and like so many men before...in very many ways...he was just one more.

His mirror was enchanted...break the mirror and the man ages rapidly and blows away like dust in the wind...which is because he was dust and it was windy...
