Well, you've read the notes, the notes did a macabre dance with corn, and now it is time for you to post until the macabre cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: BROCADE!
-
I'm home.
-
Topic of the Day: Witness and the original Blade Runner (both with Harrison Ford), and Alien Nation with Mandy Patinkin and James Caan.
-
Good morning, all!
-
I slept terribly. When I realized around 12:30 that I'd been tossing and turning for three hours without going to sleep, I changed the alarm time, and then spent the remainder of the night cuddling cats and trying to sleep. All the while "Make a Miracle" from Where's Charley? galloped through my head.
-
Speaking of Where's Charley?, there used to ber a faily good print on YouTube. Sadly, no more.
-
Last night we watched Ruthless People, which I don't think I've seen since it was released on VHS years ago. When the film was released in 1986, I saw it opening day and several more times during its run. It remains one of the funniest black comedies in its plot convolutions - very much like a Joe Orton comedy, if Orton had a heart - and the casting is perfect. I still love it.

Good morning to everyone. I hope everyone’s having a great weekend.
-
Good morning, all.
-
I should have had a comfortable all-night sleep. So I woke up at 4:00 and laid the HELL awake for two hours before finally getting another hour and a half of sleep. Now I’m just groggy as all hell.
-
Coffee!!
-
Surprise, surprise, surprise. Disaster! was wonderful. An incredibly perfect cast and very obviously a fine director, someone I knew a little years ago and it was wonderful ketchuping last night.
I was actually geared up for a fair-to-middlin’ production, mostly because I knew this place has neither the space nor budget for much of a band. Well, it was just your basic combo, but they were excellent and pulled it off just fine without the instrumental and synth color. Just fine indeed.
-
So I had a most enjoyable night as an audience member. And if I should get over to the other place for D****T*** next week, I’ll post my comments in an invisible font, lest TCB torch the jernt. 8)

Ha today is May 14 and I think DR JEANNE said a friend of hers had a gifted person tell him that today is a good day astrologically.
I don't know if it's sign specific - I have not found anything in my research - but I am all for it and say....
MAY 14 - BRING IT!
-
I'm hoping that the new Downton Abbey movie plays at the 84th and Broadway cineplex. If so, I'll get a rticket for next Saturday aftenoon or late morning.

Somehow, I slept nearly 12 hours overnight. I don't have a clue why, but I was tired when I went to bed.
I woke up once at 3 for a necessity call, and then just climbed back into bed and opened my eyes at 11:09.
No street noises, no phone ringing, no phantom doorbells and pleasant dreams.
I feel quite relaxed if somewhat listless.
-
I'm up, I'm up - maybe five hours of sleep, maybe four.
-
This place is like a ghost town right now. Not even a mystery guest!
-
DR Elmore; I watched the Beckinsale "Emma" on YouTube last night. It was interesting and somewhat different in its ending than the other versions. She was a very creditable Emma, but I hated the hats she wore throughout.
-
I cannot get enough of "Sur Les Quais de Ramsdale, Vermont" from Lolita, My Love! Poor Dorothy Loudon could not get a break until Miss Hannigan.
-
DR Elmore; I watched the Beckinsale "Emma" on YouTube last night. It was interesting and somewhat different in its ending than the other versions. She was a very creditable Emma, but I hated the hats she wore throughout.
I'm very fond of that version. The screenwriter - who wrote the Colin Firth Pride and Prejudice - wanted to point out the difference between the idle rich and the workers, and I love the edning at a harvest feast. I think the Eltons are particularly odious, and I love love love Prunella Scales and Bernard Hepton.

Yes, I want Mrs. Elton to get a full dose of reproach for her fake superiority from someone. Happily, she has Mr. Elton as her prize. I, too, enjoyed the harvest feast and thought it rather appropriate.
Isn't it funny how Bath always seems to be a subject of revulsion for Austen characters?

Thanks, but no lunch/brunch just shopping. Oh well.

Good afternoon, friends.

The morning got away from me. But I got a lot done.

Have any of you seen these new self-installing dog doors?
-
Fairly decent day here, weather-wise.
-
Corn? Jerry likes my corn.
-
And that is not a euphemism.
-
Up from a nap.
-
Been a busy day so far.
-
The car headlight wasn’t out. The mechanic got it yo work again without replacing it and didn’t charge me anything. Very nice of what was a busy morning for him.
-
Did a load of laundry and took two white shirts off to be cleaned.
-
Heating a little leftovers from yesterday.
-
Trying to watch Pasolini. It’s short, but it’s also depressing. It’s set during the director’s final hours.
-
Also got further into People from Bloomington. If the author were inspired by Jane Austen, it’s by way of Shirley Jackson. The story Orez was truly disturbed and disturbing.

It's because Miss Jane herself hated Bath. I am rer-watching the Beckinsale version today. I turned it off after the ball where Mr Elton snubs Harriet Smith too feed the cats. I think tomorrow I'll watch the Romola Garai version. I love the fact this Beckinsale version makes Emma such a snob so herepiphany after the picnic at Boxing Hill(?) is as moving as it is in the novel. The person I'm really enjoying today is Mr Knightley's married brother John with his grumbling attitude.
-
Are you gonna watch Clueless, too?
-
Back from the reading. Hard to know WHAT to think of it, really. Supposed to be a thriller, but...
-
Listening to the soundtrack from the fourth season of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. The original tunes are great. The songs from the new musical in the show, They Came, They Danced, do not sound period. The orchestrations are horribly nondescript. A fifties musical had a specific sound. These sound as period perfect as the songs in The Greatest Showman.
-
Sermon ended.

Page ended.

Three!
-
Shouldn't we be on page four by now?
-
Listening to the cast recording of Tina. The performers are fine. The orchestrations are slick. The sound is flat and lifeless.

Today would have been Mom and Dad's 67th. They made it to 64.

Are you gonna watch Clueless, too?
I love Clueless!
No, I watched it when I did my last complete Jane Austen DVD tour and wrote off the Paltrow version.
It's Box Hill, not Boxing Hill, and I've moved Beckinsale back to No. 1 position with Garai-Miller in No. 2 spot. The casting is so perfect: Masrk Strong is a better Knightley than Jonny Lee Miller, who looks too young, even though he's pushing 50 if not past it. There are times I think Garai is too contemporary and I like Beckinsale's transition from hasughty, snobby know-it-all to loving,. generous woman. Samantha Morton is so mousey and fragile as Harriet, and Prunella Scales is the best Miss Bates, but Miranda Hart in the last film of 2019 or so runs a close second. I don't think there's a bad Mr Woodhouse in any DVD version, and it's too their credit that none of them is the whiney old lady in the novel.
And, best of all, I liked how Andrew Davies used the harvestr feastival to tie up all the loose ends that cover several chaprters in the book, and Emma's hats did not bother me in the least.
-
Emma's Hats is the name of my new Edwardian novel.

Thanks, Singdaw. Now, I have to find out about getting new tickets, and if my mom and her friends can actually go next weekend.

Reading Jeremy Denk's new memoir, Every Good Boy Does Fine. He's a superb musician and an excellent writer. So far, the style of writing for the book is more approachable than some of his liner notes and blog postings.

They moved this past Thursday's PWYC to next Thursday, and the suggestion today was adding a Sunday night performance, which would be fine with me.

We had lovely weather for walking in Portland.
-
Shopping at Powell's Books was fun.
-
The birthday girl got four books, a magnet, and a tote bag to carry the books.
-
I think she was most excited about the tote bag. She received an indigo dye kit and plans to dye the bag.
-
After Powell's we walked to a nearby crepe place and had crepes.
-
By then the lunch crowd was gone and it was quiet in the little restaurant.
-
She didn't seem to find a book she wanted so took the ones we picked out.
-
The Giver of Stars by Jojo Moyes.
-
The Downstairs Girl by Stacey Lee.
-
To Kill a Mockingbird.
-
All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr. I picked it up because it was in the YA section though I think she should wait awhile to read it. Keith showed it to her before I could put it back on the shelf.
-
We had a lovely walk earlier this evening in moderate temperatures with a refreshing breeze. Such a nice change from being bundled up during the winter.
-
Yes, the lovely weather is a wonderful change from bundling up.

The kitchen clean up from the day's many activities will have to be continued tomorrow.

George, I'm sorry you waited so long to do Mamma Mia only to have so many performances canceled.

Starting to watch Dog. I have heard good things, and i like Channing Tatum. But if the dog dies in the end, I will not be happy.
-
15 minutes in and the dog is already giving a sympathetic performance.
-
Dance tonight was long and my feet really hurt. Only 12 hours until more.
-
The last of the laundry has just hit the dryer.
-
I may go to bed soon.
-
Good night, all.
-
Watched a movie. Probably will watch another. Had a pulled pork sandwich for food.

Today, I went to my sister's house to help with a project to protect the chickens from avian flu that news reports have indicated has been found in Washington state.
-
We tried putting netting over the chicken coop and other chicken-related structures and small trees to keep other birds from getting too close to the chickens, but it all was much too cumbersome and just didn't work.
-
I was there for four hours, we essentially got nothing done, and I was beat! :P So, I left and had dinner at the local Taco Bell.
-
I tried a new limited time item and I didn't like it, so I don't even want to look up what it was. I did have a second small burrito and that was pretty good, as expected, so it wasn't a total loss.
-
After eating, I went to my mom's to spend a little time since I didn't go play cards last night, and her friend Mona was there and they were finishing up a game of Scrabble.
-

Are you being serious? Because I actually recorded the rehearsal a couple of nights before we opened. I could send you that.

I just put my phone on a seat and let it record. It's aimed a bit too high and off center but you can see most of it and hear it quite well.

Ok.
-
So my mom and her two friends were supposed to see tomorrow's matinee, which has now, of course, been canceled.
-
The tickets that I bought (including my two comp tickets) were refunded today.
-
After talking to them tonight, I looked online at what seats might be open for next Sunday's matinee and I literally bought the last three tickets that were available.
-
They don't get to sit together, but that's okay...they get to see a matinee and won't have to drive at night.
-
I think there'll be enough time in between the two shows for me to have dinner with them afterward, before I have to be back for the evening performance.
-
New notes are up.
