Yesterday after leaving my mom's, my sister and I went o my storage unit because she wanted to see if it was (possibly) large enough to store a small couch that she has.  We get to the place and I couldn't remember how to open the gate! :o I had the keycard, and I guess there's a code that I have to enter to open the gate, but I just had no idea.  I tried searching through my e-mails on my phone, but that rarely works, so I'll look again now that I'm on my computer and I actually remembered to look. ::)

I think this morning I will walk to my bank and get some cash. This week is my last chance to see Downton Abbey in a local theater, so I think I'll go to tomorrow's early show.

DR Jrand71, I'm with you: the OBC recording of Company is the only one. Everyone after has too small a band, and no cast is as good as the original.  My neighbors Ann and Jen saw te current revival and really disliked it, especially the leading lady, wh they believed was not only miscast but giving a spectacularly poor performance.

I thought it was the other way around. But no matter, because I’m blaming the both of you for what I’ll be picking up this afternoon for tomorrow morning.

DR Elmore has the advantage when it comes to lox, having the best in the world at his fingertips. Not that LA is shabby. Because it certainly isn’t. I’ll be going with a good packaged variety for convenience and safety in transport.

Today is my only full day off this holiday weekend, and it’s booked solid with two “barbecues” (total misuse of the word) I’ve promised to attend:  the annual one at a theeder friend’s house at noon, and a later drop-in at a neighbor’s house. I intend to be very careful not to over eat, and especially not to overindulge in adult beverages. It really should come to no more than a decent burger and a bit of sides at each place, several hours apart, but I know all too well how these things can get out of control.

Yesterday’s gas price at Costco:  $4.47.  Premium was $4.99.

That 25-cents-per-gallon CT tax “break” is all but buried. And two out of the three months of that are already gone with the wind.

DR TCB yes today is the Indianapolis 500 - except what used to be the greatest spectacle in racing is now just another race thanks to the greed and ignorance of the newest owners of the track..

The whole state of Indiana used to be 500 conscious for the entire month of May - and now.....just another race.  Although some folks try to pretend it's still special.

Today from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. is the theeder Open House.  Tickets are on sale, OLIVER! will do a few numbers onstage for the assembled mob and the grimy kids from OLIVER! will eat all the cookies and goodies put out for the guests - while slobbering down and spilling most of the punch.

A good time will be had by all - followed by a board meeting.

The whole state of Indiana used to be 500 conscious for the entire month of May - and now.....just another race.  Although some folks try to pretend it's still special.

My grandmother used to say she knew where her 3 children and all of her grandchildren would be at noon on race day - if not there in person, glued to a radio somewhere.  She, her 3 kids, and one grandson are no longer with us and I have no idea who’s where, but I’m all settled in front of the TV waiting to hear “Back Home Again in Indiana.”

Dear reader Jane's birthday news - December 7, 1948, a Tuesday. Front page news: Ex-commie Whittaker Chambers has formally accused Alger Hiss of stealing confidential State Department documents. Meat prices dropped five to eight cents a pound. There was light rain and the temperature in LA had a high of 63 and a low of 42. Brrrr. the state draft quota was cut for January. In Long Beach, a 14-month old baby narrowly escaped injury when an automobile crashed through a bedroom wall within inches of the crib where she was sleeping. Jap war lords won a high court delay. and the big news is that the city population, thanks to Jane, hit 2,008,580.

In other news, film actress Diana Lansing was in court  on kidnapping and extortion charges involving a film producer, John Clein of 555 N. Rossmore. She and her co-defendent, actor Christian Anderson, forced Clein into his apartment at gun point, forcing the producer to sign a contract giving Miss Lansing $50 a week for four years under threats that his relationships with the actress would be disclosed. Clein maintined she was merely a chance acquaintance.

You could take a twelve-hour direct flight to New York for 99 bucks. All department stores were having nice sales. Actor Robert Walker (Bruno Antony of Strangers on a Train), was arrested in Tokeka, Kansas and spent the night in jail - drunk and destroying city property. But charges looked like they were going to be dropped. Authorities described Walker as a "sick man." You could have a brand new Chrysler Royal four-door sedan for $2472.52.

Actors Turhan Bey and Peggy Ann Garner assisted World Student Service Fund on the campus of Los Angeles City College. In movies, Red River was in its eighth smash week at four theaters. Laurence Olivier's Hamlet was at the 4-Star. Over in Jane's neck o' the woods, The Bruin (where she would later work) was playing Beau Geste, while the Village had Road House with Ida Lupino. At the Chinese was When My Baby Smiles at Me. Three brand new houses on my street, Bolton Road (but the other side of Beverly Park leading down into Cheviot Hills, were about to be completed. I'm sure they would have been pricey, around $30,000 or so, maybe a bit more. All three houses are still there and selling for 3.5 million. 10408 Sunset Blvd. was for sale - beautiful home, but you had to be rich - about 65 grand. Today? Over 8 MILLION.

Keith has been having fun browsing the recently released 1950 census.  He looked up a good friend, found her living in her parent's house where she was living when we first met her.

Her aunt and family lived down the street.

Next door to the aunt was the Ritter family, Tex, Dorothy Fay, and one year old (soon to be two) John.

The cookout was good. Burgers, brats, and dogs, with a whole bunch of sides.

Post-dessert, they served "Velvet Hammers," an ice cream cocktail. A little goes a long way.

BK, did I remember correctly that you said these were the last of the Ben Bagley releases for Kritzerland? No Cole Porter Vol. V?

I forgot about Cole Porter V - so that's the last of 'em. Text for Hammerstein has been fixed.

I have finished the last of Mark Rappaport’s odd movie essays. It was “Anna/Nana Nana/Anna” about Anna Sten and actresses who played Nana.

Actually, no!
Title: Re: ALL THE NEWS FROM DECEMBER 8, 1947
Post by: George on May 29, 2022, 11:50:37 PM
I (was voluntold by my sister but) said to my mom that I'd come over every couple of weeks to mow her lawn, but she said that she doesn't want that.  She WANTS to mow her own lawn because she wants the exercise.

So, she'll let me know when/if she needs me to mow, but otherwise I'll go over every once in a while and help with some heavier gardening duties.

She has a tree out front that she wants trimmed, but she can't handle the size or weight of the electric saw that she has, so I can do things like that.
