Title: WRITE LIKE THE WIND
Post by: bk on June 20, 2005, 11:52:03 PM
Well, you've read the notes like the wind, you felt the notes were the wind beneath your wings, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently doing something else that has to do with wind.

I'm on my way back to the room environment.

Betsy and JMK are being the perfect hosts - everything is easy and smooth, just the way we elderly Jews like it.

And now - Dino at the piano.

I should be able to post occasionally from JMK's tomorrow.

While I've always liked Ms. Kerr and Ms. Hepburn whenever I've chanced on a movie of theirs, I would not call myself an aficianado of their work.

I like Kerr's SEPERATE TABLES and THE SUNDOWNERS.  I enjoy Ms. Hepburn in ROBIN & MARIAN, THE UNFORGIVEN, and LOVE IN THE AFTERNOON.

Good Morning!

I lied.  I'm still here.  I started catching up on some e-mails, sending a couple of e-mails out, yadda, yadda, yadda...

Glad to know everything was swellegant in Portland.  When my father was stationed in Seattle, we would head down there once or twice a year for various Coast Guard functions.  Always lots of fun.

Oh, and the Word of the Day should be: UNCTUOUS

-Although UNCTIOUS is an 'accepted' common misspelling.

The only movies that come to mind...

Deborah Kerr - "The King and I"
Audrey Hepburn - "Breakfast at Tiffany's" and "Wait Until Dark"

Well, Jed and Ann and I have just returned from the Land of Port.  A wonderful time was had by all.  I got to once again see the delightful George; and finally got to meet the raven-haired JMK, his lovely wife, Betsy, the sinfully handsome, MBarnum, and especially our delightful and witty host here at HHW, BK, himself.  Also, on hand, were the two performers from JMK's upcoming Bacharach show and their partners.

TCB, you guys got home fast! I do hope no speeding laws were broken.

And I do hope George found his way out! I had no clue where the northbound I-5 exit was as I always head south from Portland...I think I steared him in the correct direction!

It was a pleasure to finally get to meet you in person, Michael!

Had an absolutely wonderful time tonight! The reading was a blast and people were really enjoying it! Particularly Adair's boyfriend Dan who was laughing a lot!! He was totally enjoying the Kritzer books!

What a great group of people!

It was so wonderful to finally meet Jed and Ann, who make a very cute couple!! And of course the regal Mr. TCB was ever so much fun! Of course I had met George at the last HHW gathering, but I was very glad to be able to see him again!

Tonight I had a chance to talk to Bruce Blanchard's gorgeous wife Jamie (hope I spelled that right) who is currently starring in THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW at the Triangle theatre. I am going to try to get tickets for that show. Jamie assures me there are some very handsome men in the program! LOL! But she is such a sweetheart that I really want to see her on stage...and I know she is terrific in it!

And I can't wait until Friday when I go to see the Bacharach show starring Adair C. and Bruce B.! I am really looking forward to it..they are two very talented singers!

What movie was this building used in?

My guess: The schoolhouse in The Birds.

First of all I thought that Audrey Hepburn could do no wrong. Even in a terrible movie like Bloodline she was fascinating to watch. Her last movie Always, even though it was a cameo, she was the best thing about it.

But I would have to say that Breakfast at Tiffany's, Wait Until Dark, How To Steal a Millon, and Charade are my favorites. (Two comedies and two thrillers)

As for Deborah Kerr it turns out that I really haven't seen many of her films but the ones I have seen I like. The King and I tops the list. Black  Narcissus, King Solomon's Mines, Casino Royale. I know I have seen a few others, but have no memory of them.

The Gypsy Moths was shocking as she had a nude love scene!!

For a still from that shocking scene

So, today's a day with the lovely folk at Tams-Witmark.  I had to change schedule unexpectedly yesterday, so today I tackle the cello part.

TOD:
Audrey Hepburn:  BREAKFAST AT TIFFANYS, CHARADE, WAIT UNTIL DARK, MY FAIR LADY

Yes, I have been errant and truant.

I have not been errant and falsant, however.

Der Brucer and I were ladsitting yesterday, shuttling the lads to and from their respective summer camps.  Der B is back on duty all week, but since I am working today and tomorrow I spent this early morning getting him out of the door, and will be returning to sleep in in just a few minutes.  I'll be rejoining him on ladsitting duty on Thursday.

But before I return to my comfortable bed, I've got to tell you all about the appetizer I had last night.

We were part of a group of five that met at the Blue Moon (http://www.bluemoonrehoboth.com/), one of the best restaurants in Rehoboth Beach.  Most of the group had a wonderful tomato bisque to start their meals, but I chose a chilled soup shooters quartet that had everyone agog and wondering how they could have missed it on the menu.  (It's not on the menu listed on-line, which is out of date.)  It was presented as four wine glasses on a rectangular white plate, each glass filled with a couple of inches of cool and colorful liquid.  From right to left they contained a soup of yellow watermelon, a soup of cantaloupe, a soup of cucumber, and a soup of raspberry, each bolstered with spices and herbs.  Not only was it visually spectacular, but they were all delicious and played off of each other wonderfully.  It was exactly what an appetizer should be, a tantalizing start to a meal that leaves you anticipating what will follow.  (The green tea smoked duck breast filled the second part of the bill quite nicely, too!)

Hopefully, all of you will read this just before you go to lunch, so your appetites will be properly whetted!   :D

Deborah Kerr: An Affair to Remember

Audrey Hepburn: They All Laughed, an overlooked movie by Peter Bogdonavich from 1981. It also starred Ben Gazzara, John Ritter and Dorothy Stratton. I found it to be romantic and funny and all around wonderful. I do enjoy other AH movies but I wanted to mention this one because I enjoyed it so much.

I have been awake since 2:00 this morning and am about to try to get a bit more sleep, so quickly…..

Deborah Kerr:
CHALK GARDEN
AN AFFAIR TO REMEMBER
TEA AND SYMPATHY
SEPARATE TABLES

It might be easier to list my least favorite Audrey Hepburn movies ;D
MY FAIR LADY
WAIT UNTIL DARK
TWO FOR THE ROAD
THE NUN’S STORY
ROMAN HOLIDAY
WAR AND PEACE
SABRINA
FUNNY FACE

Off to catch a wee bit of sleep, if I’m lucky.

That picture of BK and JMK looks very similar to the back table at Joe Allen's where the East Coasters gather when there is a big crowd. Are you sure you didn't teleport yourselves here to the center of the world after that reading?

Of course, there are no posters on the wall from flop Broadway (and out of town) musicals but nevertheless, you could have changed the decor to try and fool us.

My guess: The schoolhouse in The Birds.

You are correct, DR MS!  This is the schoolhouse used in the movie that actually exists in Bodega, CA.  At the time I visited the joint, it was a bed and breakfast, though the last I heard it was a private home.  Suzanne Pleshette's house next door was built for the movie and immediately removed afterwards. And those kids who ran from the bird attack must have been fast on their feet--the schoolhouse is actually about five miles away from downtown Bodega Bay.

The diner still exists, too.  We had a wonderful brunch there.  For some reason I didn't take any pictures of it.

I love "Sabrina,". "Funny Face," "How to Steal a Million," "Charade" and just about any Audrey Hepburn film, but those are my favorites.

Deborah Kerr could be good in anything she did.  Like AudreyHepburn, she made everything (even a few bad films) better by being in them. "King and I" and "Night of the Iguana" are favorites.
"Affair to Remember" (which could have been pretty sappy) had a wonderful spark between Kerr and Cary Grant.

Sounds like Portland is the place to be right now.  Wish I could join you all.

Audrey Hepburn:
Breakfast At Tiffany's
My Fair Lady
Roman Holiday
Wait Until Dark
Charade
Sabrina

Shucks, I guess I like just about all of Audrey's movies.

As for Deborah Kerr:
The Innocents
Night Of The Iguana
Prudence and the Pill
--I remember this being a very funny movie but I haven't seen it in ten years or so.
The Chalk Garden
The King & I
King Solomon's Mines
(though this one is unintentionally funny at times.)

Last night I dreamt I was at Manderley in my Maidenform bra.

What was extremely peculiar in this dream was that I was channeling some cast-album producer dude and he had somehow taken over my identity and was posting to his own website as me.

Thankfully, when I awoke and looked in the mirror, I was really and truly me, with my RAVEN tresses intact.

(Was I this delusional before BK arrived?  Don't answer that).

We have a very full and busy day today, dear readers, so please send your vibes to us.  We will have a blocking runthrough this morning, then a runthrough with the complete band (yay--I finally get to hear my charts in totality) this afternoon, then probably another, another runthrough (ooh, a Stoo Hample reference, kind of) after that.

Then we will adjourn to our various corners and PLOTZ, I tell you!!

Hmm....  I noticed this at the end of press release regarding AI's
Bo Bice being signed by RCA:

Quote
"American Idol" producer Fremantle Media, meanwhile, has reportedly licensed the show's popular name for an Internet radio station that will be called American Idol Underground and will be launched this fall.

For a $50 fee, anybody will be able to upload their music to the site, where it will receive at least 200 plays. Online users will be able to sample the music and rate it. According to Billboard, the top-rated tracks will be judged every six months by a panel of celebrity judges (all to be determined), who will pick the best tracks in a variety of genres.
[/size]

Hmmm...

Why do I have the feeling that this radio station will be raking in the bucks?

That's actually a very hard role to cast!  The dancer/actor really needs to "know" how to dance badly while NOT breaking or pulling anything.  *And keep in mind, EVERYONE still has to do the initial combination right, so...

Again!

Deborah Kerr was, for many years, my favorite actress.  Of course, she had to share that honor on occasion with Susan Hayward.  It all depended on who had the most recent movie showing on NBC's "Saturday Night At the Movies" back in the olden days of the early 1960s.

Of course, the films I saw her in were "An Affair to Remember" and "Heaven Knows, Mr. Allison" and "The Journey."  Later came "The Sundowners" and "The Innocents".  "The King and I" and "From Here to Eternity" were opposite ends of the spectrum in terms of performance/character and I thought she could do NO wrong.  Only in the past couple of years have I had the great pleasure of seeing her in "Black Narcissus."  Add to that the stunning WB DVD issue of "King Solomon's Mines" in which Kerr's beauty was nearly rapturous.  Deborah Kerr is a unique screen legend -- an extraordinary beauty with a magnificent talent.

The same can be said of Audrey Hepburn.  My first encounter with Ms. Hepburn was in 1956 when, at the age of 7, I saw her in "War and Peace."  That was the key year in my movie-going memory.  My first recall of movies -- of actually watching and being absorbed in the movies -- was in 1956.  "War and Peace" made a profound impression upon me and I still love watching it.  Other films I remember seeing from that year were "Anastasia" and "The Ten Commandments."

I recall seeing Hepburn in "Green Mansions" on "Saturday Night at the Movies" when NBC switched from the Fox catalog to the MGM catalog.  It wasn't until "Charade" that I saw a Hepburn movie in a theater again.  I had seen "The Nun's Story" on TV, as well as "Funny Face."  When I saw her in "Two For the Road," I was so mesmerized by her Joanna that I thought the world was going to end when she announced, after "Wait Until Dark", that she was retiring from films to get married.  Both those films were/are wonderful and strong memories of the mid-1960s for me.

Saturday Night at the Movies.  Wow, Ron, what memories that brings back to me.  It was SNAM (I like it) that first introduced me to TITANIC; an experience that started me on a life-long quest and obsession that would eventually lead me (many years later) to the site of that ship's watery grave.

I vividly recall seeing "Titanic" on SNAM...and rushing to my school's library the next Monday where I discovered, to my delight, Walter Lord's vivid "A Night to Remember."

Other treasures that still resonate in memory: "Where the Sidewalk Ends", "No Highway in the Sky", "The Black Rose" and "The Mudlark."

Most of the running was done in front of a blue screen.  The eldest daughter of our neighbors was one of the lassies who ran and ran and ran; all three of our neighbor's kids got out of school on occasion to work as extras.  But she didn't have to sing that wretched song.

The diner still exists, too.  We had a wonderful brunch there.  For some reason I didn't take any pictures of it.

"...And Jed says he doesn't take kindly to people calling his girlfriend rude."

So said Ann in the post to which Jane refers. So Ann just slipped it in there right under our noses! Sweet romance!

Well, until now, I think many of us thought it might have been more along the lines of Jed's referring to TCB as "dad"...affectionate without being literal.

BK has confirmed the coupledom...and no one has denied it.   :)

One of my favorite personal treasures is a leather-bound copy of A NIGHT TO REMEMBER signed by Mr. Lord.  Sadly that edition was printed without the wonderful photographs.

I am afraid I don't remember those other three films from that series.

I do want to post this one picture now.  Here's the gang outside the church just minutes before BK's reading/signing (from left to right):  Jeff (JMK), Tom (TCB), Me (George), Mike (MBarnum), Jed, Ann and BK himself!

NBC's Saturday Night at the Movies opened with GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES, followed by THE SNOWS OF KILMANJARO, and third up was TITANIC.  Like DRs TCB and RLP - this is the movie and the showing that introduced me to the Titanic saga, and like them I immediately went looking for a book about the ship.  Interesting, even though I couldn't find the Sturges family on the passenger list.

NIAGARA was also shown - I think the series started in the fall of 1963, so if was about a year after Marilyn's demise.

There was an interesting wrong answer to the last question in the quiz that involved a star of a show that season who created a role that was played in the movie by another actress who was in another play that year.  The Trip To Bountiful opened with Lillian Gish in the lead.  Earlier in the year, Geraldine Page made her Broadway debute in a play called Mid-Summer.  But it opened in the previous season, and thus didn't qualify as a correct answer.  Also, I guess it's debatable whether Miss Page became a beloved movie star or not.

Funny little story about  that, actually.....

As we were pulling things together to pack, Dear Partner John and I turned to each other and said "where's the camera?"  We ransacked the house and simply could not find it.  Oh, we found film....we found film waiting to be developed....we found two disposable cameras.  But we did not find our actual camera.

We looked at each other and said, "You know what?  we've been to Bermuda....we've been on the ship we are sailing on.....we could stand to lose a couple of pounds before stepping  before a lens....let's not worry about it."  So we took the disposable cameras and took all of four (count 'em, four) pictures.  Total.

But I imagine we should try to find our camera......

TCB, you guys got home fast! I do hope no speeding laws were broken.

And I do hope George found his way out! I had no clue where the northbound I-5 exit was as I always head south from Portland...I think I steared him in the correct direction!

You did, but I didn't go in the right direction ::).  Dopey me! I got on some freeway / highway going the wrong direction, got off at some exit and was eventually able to get back on in the correct direction.  Then I saw a sign that said "I-5 North this lane" (to the right), but I wasn't able to get into the right (and correct) lane quickly enough, so I headed in the wrong direction again!  I was eventually able to turn around again and was finally heading north on I-5.

The worst part of all of this was that as soon as I got into my car after leaving the restaurant...I had to go to the bathroom!!  It wasn't until Exit 22 in Washington that I was able to find a 24-hour grocery store (Safeway) and stop to use the facilities.  I also got some gas (as only $2.149/gallon...with my Safeway card discount) and drove the rest of the way north without incident.

What was cool was that to the west were some lightning storms.  They were pretty far away, so I only saw the flashes of very bright light, but it was very unusual.

While I won't refute the possibility of your having seen something 100 years ago, I will say that "The Grass is Greener" was considerably later than that...1960, I believe.

And you don't remember much because it didn't offer much to remember.  Grant and Kerr were married and landed gentry and all that sort of thing, dontchaknow...Jean Simmons was wasted as friend of the family, and Robert Mitchum, bless his heart, was only marginally convincing (to me) as a possible lover for Kerr (the same Kerr I had adored as Mrs. Anna and  Sister Angela and Terry McKay, the cabaret singer who was crippled because she was "looking up...").  I just couldn't imagine her preferring Mitchum over Grant.

The worst part about it, though, is that this was a Stanley Donen film.  I can only imagine he did it to satisfy the terms of some contractual agreement.

By the way, for those of you for whom it may not be too late, I have heard recently that people who drink daily portions of fruit juice are less likely to get Alzheimer's than those who don't.

I don't remember where I heard it, of course, but take it for what it's worth.

DR JRand, I always thought the first SATURDAY NIGHT AT THE MOVIES was HOW TO MARRY A MILLIONAIRE. I could be wrong, but I have always thought so and have also read this in histories of broadcasting.

That was a milestone in showing films on TV because NBC made the decision to show the film pan and scan rather than letterboxed and thus began a policy that it still in effect today with almost all films on all networks, both broadcast network and cable. Very few show aspect ratio correct versions of films, all because NBC chose with that first broadcast of a Cinemascope movie not to show it in letterbox.

The installation and calibration took 4 hours, 35 minutes. I was still not quite satisfied when I left, and then on the way home, thought of something, one little switch I forgot to flip. Made a call to my brother and will guide him through it to bring it "up to code."

Anyway, the picture was stunning, and he was very pleased with the sound (but I wasn't). But we'll get there.

Good Afternoon!

I drove here.

I drove there.

I ate here: Moby Dick House of Kabob.

I ate this: combination kabob platter - ground sirloin and lamb (one each), tandoori bread, basmati rice, grilled tomatoes, yogurt/cucumber/mint sauce, herb plate (watercress, parsley, radish and feta cheese).

I ate there: Heidelberg Pastry Shoppe

I ate that: A slice of Heidelberg Torte - almond sponge cake with chocolate chips baked in, raspberry jam filling, chocolate buttercream icing, covered with chocolate shavings.

I drove someplace else.

I drove around some more.

And just for kicks, I snacked here: Baskin-Robbins - a Kiddie Scoop of their Daiquiri Ice in a cup.

I walked around a bit.

I drove home.

I'm still full.

I can't think of any Audrey Hepburn performance I DON'T like. I don't much like HOW TO STEAL A MILLION, but it has to do with an overlong running time and a script that isn't witty enough to do justice to such a great cast. But she's usually great in everything.

Another film that doesn't measure up to her great talent: PARIS WHEN IT SIZZLES.
Title: Re:WRITE LIKE THE WIND

And I, too, was devastated to read in 1967 that she wasn't going to be concentrating on making films any more. After those two stunning performances in TWO FOR THE ROAD and WAIT UNTIL DARK, she must have been offered the moon to do films in the late 60s and early 70s. However, that IS just about the time that women's roles started drying up and many great actresses were having a hard time finding worthwhile roles to play.

I would love to have asked her what films she was offered that she turned down in the years between WAIT UNTIL DARK and ROBIN AND MARIAN.

It was a nice afternoon for a drive.  Windows down.  Not too much traffic.

I ended up heading back over to McLean to see if I could find the Japanese goods store I had read about.  I came across their website, and found the address.  Then after consulting Mapquest, I headed out.

Well, it appears they need to update their website.  The address was correct, unfortunately, the store inventory left a bit to be desired.  The website touted a nice "bento box" selection - I was hoping to grab lunch there.  Alas, no more bento box section.  They did have the usual items I've seen in other Asian supermarkets, but since this is a small store in a rather tony neighborhood, the pricing was not as friendly.  Half of the downstairs was filled with homemade-looking dubs of Japanese movies.  I didn't see a commercial looking label in site - but maybe that's what they're supposed to look like.  ???  *If I had noticed a section for Japanese musicals, I would have picked up one for DR MBarnum.  Alas, since I cant read katakana nor kanji....

But it was nice to finally find this place I first heard about a couple of years ago.  Too bad I didn't find it a couple of years ago.

I’m so very glad to read that everyone had a GREAT time at the Land of Port gathering!   I love the pictures!

François de Paris, Please don’t feel bad about telling me about Meat Loaf.  Like I said, you can get the wrong impression of a person if you don’t really know them.  You know, maybe we should work on a Europe and/or Oz gathering........ ;) :)

Tomovoz, I like your favorite painters paintings as well!  Very, very nice.  I also wanted to ask you a question.  How cold is it in Oz right now?  If you’re in winter, do you get snow where you’re at or is it more like a Florida winter? No snow but still can get pretty chilly.

So, after my trek to the Japanese store, I headed over to the nearby Moby Dick House of Kabob.  Always a great meal, and their tandoori bread/pita is some of the best in town.

Then I took some back roads back into Arlington.  I noticed a few differences along this route - a new Starbucks (surprise! ;)), the Greek bakery was long gone, etc.

...Oh!  Look the Heidbelberg Pastry Shoppe! So...  After drooling over the amazing selection of baked goods, I settled on the slice of their Heidelberg Torte.  I decided to take a breather, and I had my cake in their little cafe area.

Then it was up the street where they had just remodeled one of the older strip malls in Arlington.  In fact, this particular neighborhood is now being called "New Arlington" due to all the refurbishing going on there.  I found the new Italian place that recently got a rave in the Post, and the Mexican taqueria that I've been reading about for years.  The little Thai place was still there next to the Baskin-Robbins.  And since I hadn't been to a Baskin-Robbins in ages...

-It was a small, Kiddie scoop!

I remember her commenting, when announcing her retirement, that "...now Mia Farrow can get all my parts."

Didn't happen, of course.  How could it have!!!

I love Mia Farrow, but she's no Audrey Hepburn!  (and vice-uh, vers-uh)!

Before I go "out there" for 4 hours of information waitressing, I'd like to mention Audrey Hepburn's The Nun's Story.  It was one of my favorite movies when I was in junior high.  The first movie tie-in book I remember purchasing and reading.  Haven't seen very many Deborah Kerr movies.

I also like The Nun's Story.  I think I told you that when I was a very little girl I wanted to be a Nun when I grew up.  I didn't understand what it meant.  I just liked the outfit.  I still think the habit and veil are kinda neat.

Well, since it was a nice day outside, and I was in a nice neighborhood, I decided to explore a little bit on foot, ice cream cup in hand.

Whoever did the sprucing up of this strip mall did a very nice job.  And I noticed they even added a parking deck in the back!  And with all the good restaurants crammed into there, I'm guessing they need the extra parking now.

One very happy re-discovery was noticing that Mothers Macaroons had reopened!  What a great bakery, and great macaroons, what else?!?!?  Lots of different flavors, plus other baked goods (cookies, cakes, pastries, etc.).  The last time I had driven by, I had notice that another business had taken it's place... Ah, well.  But when I headed in today, I asked the clerk if the store had closed down for a while.  She that they owner did close up shop for a while to take care of some family business, but she reopened a couple of months ago.  :)

*When I worked at Foxes Music, instead of bringing in donuts on Saturday mornings, we would bring in Mothers Macaroons.  And it was a shock to see it had closed up since I've always thought the place was very buy and doing great business.  Very nice to see she's back.

-Alas, I did not buy any macaroons today, but the week is still young.

Jose will your car be moving to NY with you?

I plan to be car-less once I'm in NYC.  However, I'm deciding whether I should sell it to my mechanic who wants to buy it - and give me pretty decent money for a 13-year old car - or hold on to it since it looks like I'll be back here in DC for Damn Yankees later this year.

I can definitely tell it's getting old, and I've been trying to be as good an owner/driver as I can be right now.  I also have the sense that if I were to put it in the shop for any sort-of needed repairs, I might as well buy a new car.

OH!

And since I don't think I've answered this yet on here...

My place in New York will be in Harlem.  I've arranged a sublet for two months for now that can be extended if needed.  I actually was tipped off to this place by Nick with whom I was staying with in March - and who is currently down in Roanoke working with DR Ben's ever-lovin' Ant.

It's a two-floor, four bedroom apartment.  I'll have two roommates, but the place is kind of big by NYC standards, so there's plenty of space, and I'll have my own bedroom.  Two full baths.  One small living room on one floor, a larger living space on the other.  Full size kitchen.  A/C.  Washer/dryer in the apartment(!!!).  Private, fenced-in backyard(!!!!!).  And the house is wired for DSL, so I'll have a fast internet connection too!  And my share of the rent is quite reasonable - a veritable bargain.

Like I said, I'm currently signed on their for two months, but it could easily go to three since Nick has some more work out of town.  I have a few other friends who will be making the move up to NYC in September, so I may look into getting an apartment with one of them later.  Or I may see about getting - and affording - a place on my own.

But for now, it should do nicely.  I just want to be up there.  As long as I have my bed and my suitcases packed with clothes, I'll be fine.  I have some audition work lined up already, and I'm planning on doing some pit observances just to get my face in front of all those conductors.

I'm just looking forward to being up there, and spending time with my friends.  And making some new ones as well.

I mentioned that as an aside in my answer. But went with Sabrina Fair/Sabrina.

At first I thought the play was Witness For the Prosecution. It followed for the directors and the stars, They were both leads and both won tony awards in the same year. It would happen again where a lead who be nominated, but never two from the same year. It started to fall apart when I could only find one actor from the supporting cast who did a tv series from the 60's Gene Lyons who did Ironside.

Jane, the bakery I mentioned last Friday, Mary's Off Jane is directly across the street from Tavern on Jane and just two doors down from Mary's Off Jane is the new location for the frighteningly good Lilac Chocolates. They had been on Christopher off Hudson for years and years but now they just use that space for offices. The new store is big and bright and smells wonderful when you walk in the door. It's a dangerous place to be when you have a craving.

My walk to the river was very nice. I saw the sun set and many other people were out enjoying the pleasant evening. There was a soft breeze off the water and walkways and grass were full of people laying about or sitting on benches. A very good way to end the day.

I am now home and I have put the tea in the refrigerator to chill so it will be ready for tomorrow's lunch. The greenmarket is open at Union Square tomorrow so I can come home with all sorts of good things to eat and food for the rest of the week. Green beans, Boston lettuce, pastry from Baker's Bounty, a small quiche perhaps and some rugelach (they make GREAT rugelach). A few apples and some strawberries. The blueberries may be ready also. Ummm, my mouth is watering.

LOL.  I think it might be too late for me.

I never did understand the idea that Mitchum could suddenly sweep Kerr off her feet.  Not only was Grant very appealing in the movie, his character was a nice guy while Mitchum, IMHO, was truly lacking on both counts.

Well I just finished watching the original "unaired" (as it said on the DVD) menu. Not true because I remember watching it.

I have to say and just not because BK was in it, but the original is a lot better than the series with Lisa Hartman. I watched a few of them a did not crack a laugh.

The original pilot at least had a writer who was involved in the series Ed Jurist and Bill Asher produced and directed it. When the Hartman series came around they were gone.

They only thing BK version got wrong was the spelling of the main character.

Her name is Tabitha with a middle i and not an a.

And an interesting blooper.

There were no special titles filmed for the main title. The footage behind the main title actually comes later in the show. Where Tabitha and boyfriend catch a trolly car. By the time BK's credit comes on Tabatha is coming out of her apartment. She sees that she missed the trolly that she is already on and grabs a cab

The macaroons at Mothers Macaroon are all the coconut kind.  Plain, Chocolate Dipped, Almond, Chocolate Dipped Almond, Orange, Chocolate Dipped Orange, Pineapple, Chocolate Chip, White Chocolate Dipped...

If you're speaking of the Almond Macaroons, the Heidelberg Pastry Shoppe I mentioned earlier makes wonderful ones.  A little larger than a quarter in size - such a wonderful taste in a bite-size cookie.  They also make macaroons with ground hazelnuts.  Very good too.

In the Lisa Hartman series. Adam is now the older brother and is a mortal. Playing the Darrin mode which doesn't really work. I think BK being the younger brother and being a warlock worked better.

But I think the reason why both versions failed is that in realty Tabitha was only  10 years old and they had aged her. Adam was only 8 years old. Bewitched had been off the air in first run for only 4 years and perhaps was too soon for it too succeed or the fantasy show were passe. With comedy shows like MASH, All in the Family, Mary Tyler Moore and Bob Newhart Shows, Maude and others from the MTM and Norman Lear factory in the top ten there was no place for it. ABC was still the 3rd network at the time. Happy Days and Laverne and Shirley weren't hits yet.

Why would they even do it this way?  How could they think that anyone would accept that Adam is older?  Did they try to explain it?  I remember the series with Lisa Hartman and that Bernard Fox was on it, but I don't remember the details. :-\

It really is a throw away line. Adam calls Tabitha his kid sister (not big sister) and it is state he is mortal

I haven't got to the episodes with bernard fox or the one with gladys and abner.

Hey, I like our Hawaiian shirt picture!

And now I will attempt to post some photos...I tried uploading to PHotobucket but doggone if they didn't automatically resize the photos so small that they were all blurry...and then I tried to upload to my AOL photo album, but couldn't seem to get a URL to paste into this here message. I must be doing it all wrong..but I will just upload to this sight the old fashioned (and space hogging) way.

I'm in the business center after another VERY long day.  AOL would not even load properly so I'm using Safari, which seems to be doing okay.

The "interiors" of Tabitha were shot at The Burbank Studios.  All the location stuff was indeed shot in SF.  My copy is waiting for me back home.

May I just say that these photos of me are horrendous (I'm talking about the now ones).  I am NOT that fat.  I am NOT that fat.  I've been losing.  Those cameras are adding ten more pounds than I've already got on me.  Well, I'm telling you, twelve weeks from now I will weigh twenty to twenty-five pounds less, and then I'll take a break, and then I'll lose an additional ten.

I then watched the season premiere of RESCUE ME on F/X. There's lots of buzz about Denis Leary scoring an Emmy nomination for the first season of the show, and this second season premiere was quite arresting drama.

And lots of wonderful New York City character actors: Robert John Burke (a longtime favorite), Dean Winters, Lee Tergesen. Good show.

When you "hide" the waist, it actually makes your waist "longer" consequently bigger.  When you see a waistline/belt/etc. helps to "divide" the person.  Otherwise, it's just one big mass.

DR Jane - Ah, you found their website!  I was gonna Google for the URL earlier, but it looks like I didn't have to!

I have to play a Noon rehearsal tomorrow downtown.  I should be able to stop by the bakery on the way back.  I'll see what they say is safe for shipping this time of year, and...

I also found out today that they make their own sausages and other German goodies.  I never realized that before - or everytime I went in, I just went straight to the bakery cases.

And, yes, the coffee cakes with marzipan are wonderful.  Actually, Ukrop's in Richmond, makes coffee cakes and individual danishes with marzipan.  Quite yummy.

And their marzipan fruit are very nice too.  Not the small dainty things.  These are practically life-size.  The display in the store is beautiful.

Oh, and they also had marzipan penguins today.  Basically a piece of marzipan shaped like a penguin that is standing on a cookie base.  For the wings and "face" of the penguin, the marzipan is dipped in chocolate so that it drapes like the black parts of a penguin, that tuxedo look.  They looked very cute, and very tasty.

For the rest of us, we must languish in our Summer Solstice, the longest day of the year.

Yep!  I went into sticker shock too the first time I looked at a Tommy Bahama shirt.  There's another "tropical" clothing line, Panama something-or-other, that makes the same sort of shirts.  Only more expensive.

Thankfully, there are a bunch of other brands and knocks-offs and store brands that make the same sort of shirts at more reasonable prices.

However, I should point out that a lot of those Tommy Bahama shirts are 100% silk, and silk ain't cheap.

Such lovely postings today.

See, I don't look so fat in that last photo, where I'm standing up.  Slightly larger than I'd care to be, but not like a blimp.

I'm very tired, but will try to do a little more work here in the Business Center (trying to give the kritzerland site the final once-over.  The only pesky detail that I have to attend to when I return is the shipping costs.  The way UPS has restructured their prices, unless you ship regularly and in real bulk it costs nine bucks to ship one cd to New York.  That is just nuts and one can only hope that UPS goes down the toilet with those prices.  Fed Ex ground is cheaper, if you can believe it, and considerably so, just over six bucks.  I think I'm going to settle at a five dollar shipping and handling charge for up to two CDs - and then an additional buck for each CD above that, with a cap at five CDs (in other words, they would never have to spend more than eight dollars no matter how many they ordered).

If I were to use the USPS, that's the cheapest, with one CD going anywhere via priority mail for just about four bucks and change.  However, one can't track those packages, so if USPS doesn't deliver them you have no option but to take the loss, although I could insure them and it would still come out to five bucks.  I just have to decide.

BK - My brother who sends out a lot of stuff from his office "warned" me that both FedEx and UPS may be restructuring their shippping costs again sometime this summer due to the every increasing and ever fluctuating gas prices.  There's already a "gas surcharge" on larger shipments.

And, actually, if you use the USPS you can request Tracking (and Signature Verifiction) on Priority Mail packages - it's about $0.45 extra - maybe more, maybe less.  And since you can print out labels and postage from your home and/or business computer, it's quite an easy add-on.

*My brother also does a ton of E-bay, so he has the system down pat.
