Well, you've read the notes, the notes spoke of ol' Ludvig Van, and now it is time for you to post until the ol' cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: CONSCIENTIOUS!
-
Then I'll go back to writing.
Oh great! Another snippy post from BK!
-
~~~Excellent Vibes and Xylophones for an Early and Safe Arrival of the Indiegogo Funds!!~~~
Good morning, all!
This new television is working my last nerve. I don't know if it;s the telly, the cable box, the cable, or my incompetence, but I turned the TV on at 6:09a.m., and finally got service at 7:20a.m. Jeez!
-
Nw that I am awake and crabby, I hope to spend the day being neither. I'gve got some research to do as well as vacuum. Then I hope to doze.
-
I also have a new mystery that I am eager to dive into.
-
DR George, I am very curious about The Frozen Lozenge. Thank you,
-
BK, I cannot find Frank Konwitschny or his Beethoven cycle on Amazon. I'm not sure I'd buy the set - who am I kidding? I can't afford it at the moment - but I'm curious to hear it.
I actually love Beethoven's opera Fidelio as well as its horrifying supernatural offspring, Weber's Der Freischutz. My first recording, maybe not my favorite but I still love it, is Bernstein's. It's a singspiel with spoken dialogue, making it one of the the darkest musicals of the early 19th century.
Between 1801 and 1850, there were several German fairy tale operas (Lortzing's Undine, e.g.) and gothic horror attempts. Marschner's Der Vampyr gets occasional hearings, even a BBC telecast, but it's more silly than frightening.
-
Safe travels, DR singdaw!
Good morning, all.
I have never heard of this conductor, and judging by his short wiki page, I think we’re not alone. This seems to be the most correct spelling of his name:
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Franz_Konwitschny
-
The page says that in addition to the Beethoven, there are three recordings of Wagner operas. I don’t know if they’re commercial releases, live performance bootlegs, or what.
-
Good morning, all.
Weird night of dreams, mostly work related.
Wordle in 5. I did not know the word.
Long, hot day ahead.
-
We did Fidelio in Cleveland and I think I most listened to the Toscanini recording along with a couple of others. I’m thinking Klemperer, and maybe I had a Furtwängler. I don’t remember if the Bernstein was one. I’m so vague on this that I’m also embarrassed to say I don’t remember who our singers were. Eleanor Steber had really wanted it, and I sure wish that could have happened. I have our live recording and should dig it out.
-
This is our Hot as Hell weekend. Mid 90s today, high 90s tomorrow, and then it falls back into the mid 80s on Monday.
-
I did have that Bernstein. It was a casualty of one of my record purges.
-
Fidelio in Cleveland is Betty White's new series I think.
I have been enjoying the recent recording of Beethoven’s second and fifth symphonies stripped down to Emanuel Ax, Yo-Yo Ma and Leonidas Kavakos.
-
Most interesting, this early stereo Beethoven.
When BK first mentioned it a while back, I said I thought I had an idea which recording it might be. And I was wrong. The one I'd remembered hearing about in the same vein was a Rene Liebowitz cycle issued by Readers Digest. Those were all pressed by RCA then, and as such, were popular with collectors.
I found a pristine copy at a library sale, and I guess the recorded sound was very nice, but for my tastes, his conducting, while not junked up with annoying idiosyncrasies, also didn't set the world on fire. So I figured I'd probably never take it out again and I let that one go, too. The only two Beethoven sets I still have now are Szell and Toscanini.
Dad found a copy of the Toscanini set of Beethoven at a library sale. It was in good condition. He never listened to it, but I did.
I'm not a great lover of Beethoven's symphonies. The last moveent of No. 9 is glorious, and I suppose I like the 6th(?) because it's been part of my life since I saw Fantasia over sixty years ago.
I think I prefer the piano concertos more, along with the Missa Solemnis. I think his British fok song arrangements are interesting.
Saturday. It is a good day to be snippy.
-
My fence is supposed to be delivered at any moment.
Of course this is the day that the new neighbors across the street have also had something delivered and now two pickup trucks with trailers are parked in front of my house clogging up traffic.
I hope my fence folks can weave their way through to throw my fence off their truck and into my yard.
I can agree with all of this (except I don’t know the folk songs). It’s the 6th and 9th for me, hands down.
Porch man did a nice job repairing the screens yesterday. He actually spent several hours re-tacking some in place, including others that had not come loose. We shall see how it fares after the next storm.
Denny is mowing my lawn right now. I feel I am being taken well care of even if I'm doing nothing but writing checks.
Wordle in 5. I did not know the word.
It is not a word I have ever used, but I have encountered its usage in books I have read, including LOTR.
I learned that it was the more commonly used name for something I call by another name.
We'uns down in the South use that other name frequently.
My eye appointment went well yesterday. Apparently, optometrists are not happy with the new requirement by DMV of having licensed doctors do these tests for them. It requires them to do extra work online.
My doctor told me South Carolina was the last state to implement this requirement.
The convention let out about five minutes before my fence arrived.
It was a big truck and only ONE guy. He used a small forklift to bring some pallets up my driveway. The cement bags are now under the carport and the fence pieces wrapped in red plastic are on the driveway.
The forklift would not fit into the carport. So both cars are parked around the fence pieces so no one can steal them.....I hope.
Do you think the thief would get much for them from a fence?
Have now started The Northman, which is occasionally silly despite itself. Yet it is interesting.
Without realizing it, both films have Alexander Skarsgard in them.
The back of the box says The Northman is from "visionary director Robert Eggers." Visionary? He directed The Lighthouse and The Witch. He must also have a good PR person in his employ.
Hello, everyone.
-
Last week I saw a bench/shoe rack on Amazon that I thought could be repurposed to hold my newly organized boxes of CDs. The bench, of course, requires assembly. I can actually assemble some things, but this just didn't work for me. There's now a note on my neighbor's door, requesting assistance. My cluttered little apartment now has a partly assembled bench sitting right in the middle of the floor.
-
Pie!
the pie looks lovely. Are those angels on top?
-
DR John did you bake that delicious looking pie?
-
I'm very fond of the Beethoven sonatas. I like the symphonies, too, but don't really have a favorite.
It's nice you have a neighbor that can help you. I hope you won't have to live with the clutter too long.
Jane, many Russians were absolutely appalled when Ukraine was invaded, hate Putin, and felt they could not stay, partly because the government is cracking down on all dissent and partly because they felt they couldn't be a part of such atrocities. Others, many in the arts, have left because they needed freedom to travel to pursue their careers. Many, many Russians have left permanently. Russia is experiencing a real brain drain.
I thought maybe it had been mentioned to you that the desire to leave Russia was partially due to the difficulty of dealing with those that completely support Putin. I have read the stories of those who refuse to believe family & friends in Ukraine as to what is really happening there.
