Topic of the Day:  the only one that I know that I've seen was Cloverfield.  I think I remember liking it because I had never seen a movie like that.

i had forgotten Cloverfield, which I sorta liked.
The Blair Witch Project, which I saw on its opeing day, however, managed to get under my skin and completely terrify me. I had nightmares for weeks about those twig figures and rock patterns. I remember that after seeing The Exorcist, my sister-in-law at the time was so frazzled and terrified that she had serious fewars of the dark and sought help from a local Catholic priest. I mocked her for all that. Well, The Blair Witch was payback.

My Facebook memories reminded me that August has been a pretty gfood month for me so that bodes well for the property sale.

Six years ago today, we had our York Theatre reading of Moonshine and Mistletoe, now coyly retitled (ugh!) Up on Mistletoe Mountain, because of concerns that "moonshine" might offend potential teetotalers. Oy!

I believe I have only watched two found footage movies, Blair Witch and Apollo 18. I, too, saw the former on its opening day at a movie theeder, and enjoyed being taken in by it. It was the final image that most spooked me. Years later, the subject matter of the latter was irresistible, and I enjoyed that one, too.

I've seen a few bits and pieces of others that Kristi and Nathan have watched on the TV, because they like the formula, but they all look and sound alike to me. So other than the witch and space program ones, I'll pass until someone comes along with one involving some other subject matter I'm crazy about.

Yes, I wish my collaborator, who's irked me by not asking my opinion before changing the title, would revert to M & M. I like the fact that moonshine can refer to the light ofg the moon or a liquor, especially sicne our comic character is a moonshiner and there's even a song. Our producer had a Hallmark writer do a telescript that was not only embarrassing but completely unresearched with no knowledge of  depression-era Appalachia, depression poverty of the 1930s, holler architecture, or the characters. I couldn't finish the script.

TOD:

The restored "Cleopatra" (1963).  I think it was improved by the additional footage.

The restored "A Star is Born" (1954) -- Immeasurably enhanced by the restoration.

I have seen television presentations of films with cut footage added in.  "Supereman" was one such film.   It wasn't hurt by the cuts.

I once saw "Out of Africa" on TV with a lot of additional footage.  As it's one of my favorite films ever, I have to say I was intrigued and would love to have access to it again.

On the first DVD of "The Accidental Tourist" (and this may have been carried over to the blu ray release), they had outtakes that never made the final cut.  Many of the scenes were Kathleen Turner's, and her character was deeper and more sympathetic than in the final cut.

Then there is "South Pacific", the original roadshow version with about 17 extra minutes.  What an improvement those minutes were for the character of Luther Billis.  Ray Walston had always irritated me with what I presumed was a boiled ham performance.  They cut the heart and soul out of his performance, IMO.   And then there was the additional scoring -- ORIGINAL work by Alfred Newman -- that accompanied scenes not in the play, but in keeping with the film.

Interesting, DR Ron Pulliam.

My interpretation of what BK meant by "found footage" is that the movie is structured artificially to be based on camera footage that has been "found," but is actually created for the movie in the screenplay.

Around 1982, while I was working with the cabaret act "Just Good Friends," we perfrmed in Central PArk at the rally at the end of the Gay Pride parade. Pat Carroll was one of the speakers. She ands I spent a lovely couple of hours chatting on a nice June afternoon in Central Park.. I liked her very much.

Interesting, DR Ron Pulliam.

My interpretation of what BK meant by "found footage" is that the movie is structured artificially to be based on camera footage that has been "found," but is actually created for the movie in the screenplay.

Yes, I gathered that, but I find there are few films I am aware of that are like that.

EXCEPT....

That wonderful reconstuction of "Something's Got to Give", the Marilyn Monroe-Dean Martin film that was being directed by George Cukor for Fox at the time "Cleopatra" was sucking up all the studio's resources.

It was, of course, scrapped, and was later recast with Doris Day and James Garner and Polly Bergen as "Move Over, Darling".

But some enterprising soul at Fox took all the found footage  (i.e. discarded but not destroyed) and pieced together a short version of "Somethings Got to Give" and included it on a DVD about Marilyn.  (Don't remember which DVD it was on).

And they do make them without having to vent them out windows.  I had two such units in my Oakland condo.

Larry, the West Coast, especially Oregon and Washington state, has a lot of homes, including condos and apartments, that were never given central A/C because the weather was generally never hot enough to warrant them.

But...the times are changing rapidly.

I didn't need A/C in my Oakland condo for the first couple of years, but one summer got terribly hot, so I indulged in window unit.  I lived there for 25 years and I went through a window unit, a portable that had to be vented and then two portables that did not have to be vented.

Ooh! Ooh!

"The Marilyn Monroe Special Anniversary Collection consists of five Marilyn Monroe films plus the documentary The Final Days. "

"In The Final Days, producer-director Patty Ivins chronicles Monroe's final, aborted feature film, Something's Got to Give, which was ultimately shut down after the star was dismissed from the production. Beyond Monroe's fragile emotional and physical health, this well-crafted profile examines the financial crisis facing her studio as well as the mounting frustration of meticulous director George Cukor and his cast, including costar Dean Martin, as Monroe's absences drove the shoot over budget. The documentary concludes with a 40-minute reconstruction of footage completed for the feature, which would subsequently be reshot as a vehicle for Doris Day and James Garner, Move Over, Darling."

Although, one of them did arrive with all the hub tines broken (the disc itself is undamaged) but I have replacement inlay trays, so I won't be filing any kind of PayPal dispute.

Unlike most people I was not a fan of My Sister's Keeper.

Still, I intended to read Small Great Things and Nineteen Minutes and haven't done so.

It seems the library will be forcing me to change from Overdrive to Libby.

Everyone will have to change in early 2023 as they are getting rid of overdrive. I use both libby and overdrive. I prefer overdrive. But my main issue with libby is that you can't recommend books through the app. But you can through overdrive.
Title: Re: THE SCALES AND HOLY GRAILS OF AUGUST
Post by: Jennifer on August 01, 2022, 07:37:25 PM
I watched a video on the new Libby and groaned.

I think that you should get the app now and just get used to it. Even if you still use overdrive. You can connect them together. Libby does make it easier to view the newly added books.

Has anyone changed to Libby yet?

Yup, and not really a fan.  I use my Kindle and download directly from Amazon, so the Libby app is unecessary...at least, for me.

How it is unnecessary? Don't you have to see what books you want from the app?

I think that it's older. I mostly just prefer it because of being able to suggest books months in advance (that i then get put to the front of the line). And i do also find the fonts and choices to read a bit better on overdrive.  But Libby is much easier to see the newly added books.

It's my understanding that they're just getting rid of the OverDrive app, not OverDrive itself, and moving to the Libby app exclusively.

I usually have a book in mind, then go to my library's OverDrive website on my computer, then if it's available, I check it out, which kicks me to Amazon's website where I check it out there, then I go to my Amazon "Content and Devices" and download it by USB cable to my Kindle.

This may seem very cumbersome (actually, it is), but I do this because I may not want to read something right away (and I don't have a lot of time to read, and I read kind of slowly), so I don't turn on the wi-fi on my Kindle (or I keep it on Airplane mode).
Title: Re: THE SCALES AND HOLY GRAILS OF AUGUST

I download it and right away check IN the item on my library's OverDrive site so that it becomes available for the next patron, BUT it doesn't go away from my Kindle!  It's called "working the system." ;)
