Title: FIGHTING THE GOOD FIGHT

Well, you've read the notes, you've been through the thick and thin of the notes, and now it is time for you to post until the fighting cows come home.

Well, as I was saying... ;)

Oh..

Steve was playing me the recording of their last concert which had a Broadway theme.  They did an arrangement of "Don't Rain On My Parade".   -Hey, I don't pick their material... In any case...

I thought I had heard a messed up lyric so I asked Steve to replay it for me...  Then he showed me his music...

Instead of "Hey, Mr. Ziegfled, Here I am."  or "Mr. Arnstein...."  The arranger modified the lyric to:

"Hey, I'm still here, still here I am."

WHAT?!?!?!?

Hmmm...

As for breakfast...  Two places/menus:

Paris, overlooking the Seine - freshly baked croissants, butter, confiture, cafe au lait

Tokyo (or somewhere in the Japanese countryside) - salmon ochazuke: rice, salmon (baked or tea-cured), wasabi, Sencha green tea - all served in one bowl as a sort of soup.

-Is ochazuke served for breakfast, DR Hisaka?  Or are onigiri more appropriate?

I'll see how I feel when I get up.

"Tabatha" (the original pilot episode) was cute...not fabulously funny, but cute.  And the actress playing Tabatha was a bit too perky.  But it was fun watching our very own BK!  He's quite dashing as Adam.  And the episode was 25 minutes long!  That's only five, count 'em, FIVE minutes of time available for commercials!  Times have changed...and not necessarily for the better. :P

Most of the episode was about Tabatha trying to work up the nerve to "come out" to her boyfriend Cliff that she's a witch, which Adam (her brother, played by BK) really wants her to do.  After she does, Cliff can't really take it.  He goes to a bar and Adam (through witchcraft) makes the bartender go outside.  Adam pretends to be the "friendly substitute mixologist" and speaks with Cliff about his problems...that his (Cliff's) girl is a witch.  "You're not a bigot, are you?" Adam asks.  "No honest!" Cliff says.  "I just didn't know that there were such things as witches."  "Well, it's a sign of the times," Adam says.  "Gay power, gray power, fat power...everybody's coming out of the closet these days.  Just remember pal, it takes all kinds."  A rather accepting attitude for a show back then to take, in my humble opinion. :)

I'm now going to watch the Lisa Hartman pilot of "Tabitha" and see what that's all about.

Well, I watched the Lisa Hartman pilot of "Tabitha" and I must admit that she seems much more natural than Liberty, who played Tabatha (and smiled too much) to BK's Adam.  But I didn't really like the episode.  I forget who, but someone earlier this week said that it was just like the original "Bewitched" but with Adam playing the Darrin role.  It was. :P I like the characterization of Adam in the original pilot.  BK was a much better Adam. :) Anyway, I'll watch the rest of the episodes later.

Good morning, all!  I 've been up since 5:30, I'm washed, dressed, and feeling quite disoriented.  I have to put in some time this morning on the Act Two cello book for THE GOLDEN APPLE before I subway down to 14th Street and the recording office.  I need to photocopy some things I need for the DC trip on Wed, and pack up anything else I need to take with me.

Yesterday, Tom Murray and I did the final edit on "The Healthfood Man," a comedy song from Act One in BABES IN TOYLAND, I filed away more of the litter on my desk, and then I went to the NYPL to look for a BABES scrapbook that's been misplaced since 2003.  It's still missing, and now I've got two librarians promising me it will turn up; this was my fourth search for it in two years, and I'm feeling a bit discouraged by the NYPL at the moment.  Luckily, there are a lot of other BABES scrapbooks, but I need this one.  Now!

Breakfast anywhere?  As long as it's not coffee and oatmeal in this apartment, anywhere else sounds good.

I have never heard Divisi. An accapella group of eleven women at the University of Oregeon.

or

When writing divisi you can stack compound events by enclosing them in parentheses. Also, divisi which occur at the end of the measure must have the proper durations or the Scot program will mis-interpret the measure duration length.

Well we have survived (barely) the opening of the Bacharach show.

Last night was a hit and miss affair, made very tense by the sound woman's inability to get the sound system to work.  I'll let one of the other attendees go into detail, but it was not pretty.   :(   In the good news department, the lyric glitches of the first night were nowhere to be found.

I am off to my early morning gig, then I shall come home and nap for hours if not days.

TomofOz--nope, haven't heard that one.  Looks like another for our "rare gems" moment (take that, Jackie De Shannon).

I have been errant and truant.  There is much to catch up with here at HHW.  But first...

I will be missing older grandlad Alex's birthday party today.  I will be working at the cash register, helping all the starving tourists bag and pay for their food.  The out-of-stepdaughter will not be happy about this at all, because she believes that my place is at her family celebration, not at work.  She believes I should walk up to my bosses and tell them that I will be at the party, and not at work.  She believes that I should determine my schedule, and not they.

I believe that my out-of-stepdaughter has wet goose down for brains.  I don't enjoy her celebrations, as the food is lousy, the children loud, and the adults totally ignore me, mainly because I have never been properly introduced to them and o-o-s either can't be bothered or doesn't know how.

It's not like everyone can't figure out that her dad and I are a couple.  SHEESH!

So, today I shall be happily at work, and not at the partay.

I've been reading about upcoming DVD boxed sets from Warners for a long time, and I know there are upcoming boxes of Astaire/Rogers, THE THIN MAN, Miss Marple, Garbo, but nowhere have I seen any indication that Warners is going to release any Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy movies, so this Wednesday, I'll be recording quite a few of them onto DVD-Rs to add to the collection. I don't watch their films very often, but sometimes I am in the mood for ROSE MARIE or NAUGHTY MARIETTA or SWEETHEARTS. Looks like they're going to be able to squeeze most of their films into the day's run except MAYTIME and BITTER SWEET.

McDonald's is evil.

McDonald's gives children the idea that a restaurant is a place to play, with food as a secondary consideration.

Not that food is a primary consideration at McDonald's, but that's a different issue.

The problem is, kids are now so conditioned by McDonalds (and Chuck E. Cheese and other such places) to think of restaurants as playgrounds, that they have no idea how to properly behave when the situation calls for proper behavior.  And restaurants too often do everything to make the situation worse!

Thursday, the same day that I was clobbered by allergies, we met o-o-s at a buffet restaurant in Annapolis, bringing William and Alex with us.  Alex and William were told the rules of behavior.  They were to sit at the table properly.  They could eat anything they wanted, but if they put the food on their plates they had to eat what they had taken.

Then disaster struck.  The restaurant had a member of their staff dressed up as a bumblebee, handing out balloons.  There was a beanbag toss game.  There was a raffle for t-shirts.  In short, what should have been a more adult dining situation, but family-friendly, had been kid-ified.

So much for getting the lads to behave.  They saw this, and all of Grampa's instructions flew away.  And o-o-s wasn't any help.  "You can't expect them to sit still without their GameBoys!"  Well, yes, we CAN expect them to sit still without their GameBoys.  I knew how to behave in restaurants when I was growing up, because my parents taught me proper behavior.  Der Brucer was raised the same way, and he thought the lessons had been taught to his daughter.

Well, cut to the chase, dinner was miserable, a constant tug-of-war over proper and misbehavior.

I blame McDonalds for being such a pervasive easy way out.  And I blame parents for buying that lie.

Bleh.

Peggy is in trouble.

Friday, der B was grandladsitting one more time, the final day of camp week where he was transporting the lads to their respective lessons.  ("But you can't expect them to sit still in the car without their GameBoys!"  So why did Grampa have no problem at all, playing CDs to music they wanted and letting them read books?)  I, on the other hand, was at work.

Upon returning home, I made sure the doggies had a chance to do their outdoor business.  It would be so much easier if we could trust Peggy not to climb over the fence, but she loves to climb and then roam the neighborhood.  After a bit, I left the others outside while Peggy and I went back in.

Der Brucer finally returned home, but instead of coming directly inside he stopped to look at the construction on the McGulag being built next door.  I thought all the ruckus from the dogs was that they wanted to come inside, so I opened the kitchen door...

And Peggy ran out around my legs.  She took half a second to see der B standing there, outside the fence, and climbed over before we could stop her.  Then, realizing she was out again, she ran up the driveway and up the street.

Der B ran after her, and I ran through the house to follow.  By the time I got to the street, she had run downhill, so I followed on foot, leash in hand.

I finally caught up to her, by cutting through some of the neighborhood back yards, two blocks over.  She had found a very nice couple, full time residents, who in turn had managed to get a leash on her.  I thanked them, switched leashes, and led Peggy back to our house.

Well, it seems that in those seconds between Peggy hitting the street and my getting her leash and following, she had run the OTHER way first.  There, she had a brief encounter with a little dog and her mistress.  Peggy had run right up to the little dog.  Mistress had panicked, scaring Peggy away (along with her little dog and the little kids that were there, as well).

By the time I returned with Peggy, she was threatening der B.  Our dog had attacked her!  Our dog had tried to kill her dog!  Her kids were all traumatized, and wouldn't be able to play outside for the rest of their vacation!

All of this, in just a very few seconds.

Peggy is not a vicious dog.  Please note how easily the other couple, who had never met her before, were able to get a leash on her.  (On top of which, they had spotted her nametag with our phone number, and had called us right away.  If Peggy was vicious, how would they be able to read the phone number on her collar?)

The vacationer is now threatening to at least report Peggy to the SPCA.  Technically, Peggy isn't our dog but belongs to the SPCA to begin with; we're just fostering her.  Still, a threat is a threat.

Another bleh.

To answer your question about Bonnie, DR Jose.  She had  exactly 7997 miles on her when I first bought her.  She was a lease but a 2004.

I saved ten thousand because of that.  As the guy said, "This is as near to brand new that you can get without paying the full price."

I know what you mean about not liking to drive, DR Matt.  That's one of the reasons I take the bus to work--even with a vechicle I don't have to worry about breaking down every time I take it out.   I'm more confident with Bonnie but I still would rather have someone else do the driving.

DR SWW - shocking story about the "lady" and her kids - but it all goes back to your earlier post about the "times" they are a-changing.  People are most content to think only about themselves and how selfish they can be.  If we thought the 1960's was the beginning of the "me" generation - we were wrong.

Nowadays - a CHICAGO reference.

Congratulations to  DRGEORGE on his successful run - and thanks for the TABATHA review.  Thanks to DR MS for the TABATHA captures on the website!

I think I will check out DRdivarobbie's songlist that the entire world is talking about - well two people here mentioned it, and that's good enough for me.

Today is my family reunion - which, to borrow a phrase - is a lot like being pecked to death by ducks.  There is also a Board Meeting (just like the ones DRLAURA attends) - which is a lot like being the duck.

Lights are set - hopefully the actors will be off book tomorrow, and the tech crew will be as interested in hitting their cues as they are in EACH OTHER - and MIDNIGHT will take another step forward toward OPENING NIGHT!

NOT ONLY in Hawaii, BUT…
A brown roasted Kona coffe’s smell wakes me up and a fan is rounding quietly above… and if I look at the porch, Elvis Presley is sitting on there and begins to sing “Blue Hawaii” with ukulele. That’s enough. I don’t need any breakfast. :-* ;)

That’s depends.  Ochazuke is basically served as the final dish of a meal, so we usually have it last of dinner. However, we frequently have both Ochazuke and Onigiri for breakfast, since they are easy to eat, especially if you hie yourself to work early in the morning.
Incidentally, I don’ have any type of rice for breakfast, as it’s too heavy for me. I have a slice of toast, a cup of mik containing calcium ( I need calcium for keeping my bone strong!) and some fruits almost every morning.

Since I rarely eat breakfast, I guess anywhere would be fine for me.  I do like eggs & bacon or french toast or pancakes.

I used to like a cup of hot tea in the morning but I'm not allowed to have that anymore.   :(

Hi DR Hisaka!  I hope your having a good evening (?)!  I still get confused with the time differences.

I have to ask.  Did you take the kind of of NyQuil you drink or the liquid gels kind.  I can't even think about the kind you drink.  Whoever came up with that horrible tasting stuff?   Major YUCK!

It gave me the shudders just hear you mention it, BK.

Thanks for the plug... we've had a hell of a time putting the damned thing together.  My musical director and I have worked so hard on it, and I think that it's come out very nicely (though I'm rather tired of listening to myself sing...).  I just hope other people like it.

From Bruce last night:

Quote
I'm having terrible congestion pains in my chest, as if there were a little man in there squeezing everything very hard.

That was the reason my doctor told me to eat lots of watermelon.  It was Keith’s idea for me to drink the juice at the bottom of the bowl.  A humidifier might also help.

The kind you drink - I do it in one gulp and follow it IMMEDIATELY with a swig of Diet Coke - so I barely taste it.

Ummm... Well, I hope the Diet Coke you drank was the Caffeine Free variety, or you basically just ended up taking the Daytime version of NyQuil - which has caffeine it - or some other stimulant to override the drowsy side effects of the medicine.

From the symptoms you've been describing, it actually sounds like you may be dealing with a bad case of acid reflux.  -And taking a swig or two of Diet Coke before going to bed could definitely induce that.  -Oh, and the Emergen-C too - just all that acid.  *Also remember that Emergen-C bills itself as an energy giver not taker, so before bed... Hmmm.. Not sure if that's the best choice.

But you could be dealing with acid reflux.  Your mention of "squeezing" sounded very familiar to my bout with it last year around this time.  And acid reflux can also cause a very sore throat since the acid back-ups into your espophagus - trust me on this one -ugh!  Is your throat also feeling sensitive in addition to sore?  If you're not noticing much post-nasal drip going down the back of your throat, acid reflux could be the possible culprit of your malady.  You could buy one of the five packs of Pepcid AC or similiar product, take one after eating your final meal of the day, and see if that helps come morning.

*And stress can bring it on too... And with all your travel and activities that past couple of weeks...  Hmmm..

Just something to think about.

I could always check with Tom Cruise to get his diagnosis.

:)

Hmmm.... Baltimore... And it just made Frommer's Top Ten List of US vacation cities, or something like that, so....

As for NYC - We could start around 6:30am.   And end around 4:30am.

:)

The Whole Foods in The Time-Warner is just a very neat place mainly because it's in the Time-Warner Center.  There's a even a sushi bar inside.  And it's just amazing to think that some place like that exists in the middle of NYC - and their very efficient Check Out system is also a wonder to behold.  It's also subterranean - you take escalators down into it.   However, we could just stay on the ground floor and see if Williams-Sonoma - the largest on the East Coast - is offering any samples.

As for the taste of Nyquil - Well, I've always thought if the medicine in it didn't knock you out, the taste most definitely would.

;D
Title: Re:FIGHTING THE GOOD FIGHT

DR Jane - As for your "sampling diet" - most of the places on the "list" actually do offer samples and/or littler version of their more popular items.  Fat Witch Brownies always has little cubes of samples out.  Cupcake Cafe makes mini-cupcakes too - stil decorated with their signature buttercream flowers.  And you can just get a bunch of sample spoons at Rice to Riches, Cones, etc.  So, you may not be throwing away as much food as you think you might.  Of course, I'm sure there would probably be a volunteer or two willing to share with you too.

Divisi -

From the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra site - http://www.laco.org

Quote
divisi   Division of a string section that usually plays the same part, for example, violas into multiple parts,  e.g. viola 1 and viola 2.
[/size]

From The Hollywood Music Store site - http://www.hollywoodmusicstore.com

Quote
Divisi, div - An indication of divided musical parts.
[/size]

And from some site related to Prentice-Hall books

Quote
divisi (Ital.)    Indication in an instrumental part that the section is to divide the lines between or among them. Abbr. div.
[/size]

Basically, if you were driving on a single lane road, and you suddenly came to a fork in the road, the tines of the fork would be your "divisi".  And then if the two tines every joined back up again, then that would mean they came back together "a due", "non divisi" or "unison".

Or if in a grade school choir, the soprano line suddenly went into two parts... With most of the young girls clamoring for the higher part.  ;)

And I have to say I'm feeling much, much better today.  I was in a "low cycle" the past couple of day - both mentally and physically.  Guess I just needed to truly take a few days off - even though I've basically been "off" the past couple of weeks.  In any case... Feeling much better today.

And my niece and nephew are currently keeping my father entertained and vice versa.  And I'll have to take a pic of Alyssa - she wanted to wear one of her dress-up dresses today - a very pink number with crinolines!  Very cute.

Good morning all
I am back to feeling like a human being.  The flu that has been going around my place of work for the last two weeks finally saw fit to visit me yesterday.  By mid afternoon I was aching from head to toe, curled up in bed trying not to move very much.  I slept for an hour or two, woke up at 6:30, dozed until 9, got up for a while and did some housework, went back to bed at 9:30 and slept until DB Jed came home at 1:30.  I thought I'd then have a heck of a time going back to sleep for the night, but I must have dozed back off again around 2, because the next thing I knew it was daylight.
Feeling much better now, and I think I'll even make it to the final performance of Verdi this afternoon.  I'd hate to miss our final concert of the season.

Niece and nephew taking a little break now. -Boy, do these kids have a sweet tooth!  Of course, while doing laps of the house, Alyssa fell down,"went boom", and started crying for her "Poppa" - her grandfather.  So, I carried her down to him, and now she's napping on him while he's watching the Nationals game on TV.  John Michael wants to play trains downstairs, but Uncle Jojo thinks he needs a nap too right now.

DR BK:

I thought ypu might find this interesting. Comes from an article by Peter Filichia about actors who return to their roles on Broadway after a number of years.

....It's akin to going to a museum and seeing one of those statues that had been in ruins and has now been put together with cement making do for the missing marble, or listening to Carol Channing do Hello, Dolly! on the 1994 cast album, made 30 years after her first stint in the part. While Channing never had a great voice to begin with -- that was not the main source of her charm -- she's less certain here than she was then and sings to an occasional slower tempo. (The rest of the album sounds great.)

I know you have commented before about working with Miss Channing but what do you have to say about this?

DR JOSE:

How do you do those multiple quotes on one posting??

If you notice, they don't have the time/date stamps on them.  I do them manually.  I copy the text(s), and then "enclose" them in the quote coding - which is the penultimate button in the second row of YABBC on the Reply page - right before the bullet list option.  I also size everything to "2" since the default size for quotes is one.  There's also a weird "bug" in Safari that does not allow one to highlight the text then apply the tag, so I've gotten used to typing it all out manually lately.  It's just as fast for me doing it that way now.

It's similar to posting multiple pics WITHIN a post using the Image tag and URLs for the pics.

In other words...  *Replace the {} below with [] for things to work properly.

{quote}{size=2}INSERT YOUR TEXT HERE{/quote}{/size}

-The backslashes turn off the command.

And for images...

{img}INSERT URL HERE{/img}

And for hyperlinks where you want a word or phrase to be the link and not the URL itself...

[url=INSERT URL HERE}INSERT WORD OR PHRASE HERE{/url}

This will make "INSERT WORD OR PHRASE HERE" appear in blue - or whatever default color your browser uses for hyperlinks.

And as others have mentioned from time to time, if you hit Quote in order to reply to a post, all the coding will appear in the reply box.
Title: Re:FIGHTING THE GOOD FIGHT

I'm currently listening to a CD I bought a couple of years ago, but just unwrapped a couple of minutes ago:

Canciones amatorias
Songs by Rodrigo, Nin, Ginastera, Granados and Guastavino
Bernarda Fink, mezzo soprano; Roger Vignoles, piano
Hyperion label

Quite a good listen so far.  And perfect music for a hot, early summer afternoon.

*I also dug out a couple of other unwrapped/still wrapped CDs from my storage unit.  Should be quite the eclectic playlist this week.

Speaking of Coke, I bought some Coke Zero at the store this morning and am drinking it now. Tastes like Tab to me.

Coke products were on sale this past week in Richmond - $2.25 for a 12-pack of cans.  So I bought a fridge pack of Diet Cherry Coke, and one of Coke Zero..

Of course, I just had to wonder what exactly is the difference between Coke Zero and Diet Coke.  Both have "zero" calories.  I did notice a slight difference in the listing order of the ingredients, so... I guess I'll find out soon enough.

Oh, and then there's still that Coke C2....

???

I guess I could check out Coca-Cola's website... Hmmm...

This afternoon, I began by finishing up with BROADWAY: The American Musical.

Then, I put in THE GLASS BOTTOM BOAT, the one DVD out of the Doris Day Collection which I hadn't gotten around to. I had forgotten how overloaded with silly slapstick it was. The writing was rpetty witless and the extent of the comedy relies on all the silly physical slapstick, putting Paul Lynde in a dress, and Dom DeLuise doing his tired grown baby act. For compensation, there were some nice shots of a bare-chested Rod Taylor and it was nice to hear Doris sing a little. (However, whoever came up with that absurd cupie doll wig for Doris that she had to keep sweeping out of her mouth needed to be shot. She had the same hair design in CAPRICE, and it was even more in the way of her being able to talk.)

Oh... I haven't heard this song in a long time...  Music by Ginastera, and a heart-breaking poem by Francisco Silva y Valdes.

CANCIÓN DEL ARBOL DEL OLVIDO

En mis pagos hay un arbol
      Que del olvido se llama,
      Al que van a despenarse,
      Vidalitay, Vidalitay,
      Los moribundos del alma.

      Para no pensar en vos
      Bajo el arbol del olvido
      Me acosté una nochecita,
      Vidalitay, Vidalitay,
      Y me quedé bien dormido.

      Al despertar de aquel sueño
      Pensaba en vos otra vez,
      Pues me olvidé de olvidarte,
      Vidalitay, Vidalitay,
      Encuantito me acosté.

THE SONG OF THE TREE OF FORGETTING*

In my neighborhood there is a tree
that's called the tree of forgetting,
to which go to lay down their troubles,
Vidalitay, Vidalitay,
those whose souls are dying.

So that I would no longer think of you
under the tree of forgetting
I lay down one evening,
Vidalitay, Vidalitay,
and I fell fast asleep.

When I awoke from that dream
I thought of you once again,
because I forgot to forget you,
Vidalitay, Vidalitay,
as soon as I lay down.

(English translation by Jacqueline Cockburn)

*The song title is also translated as "The Tree of Obilvion".

Let me say this:  Ouch.

There.  I've said it.  And I hurt.  I hurt all over.  That's why I said it.

I hurt because of the American Cancer Society's Relay For Life.  But I only walked a total of about 2 1/2 hours, so I think the real problem comes from afterwards having to take everything down and haul it away from the campsite with no cart or wagon to use.  One of our members, Carole, has a huge canopy that is made from very heavy 6-foot metal poles and very thick tarp material.  When it's all set up, it's probably 10 feet high at the top and takes a lot of people to set up and take down.  We also had to remove our coolers filled with cans of cola and bottles of water, but with no cart or anything to help carry the stuff, we had to carry it all ourselves.  I think our team will need to invest in some wagon or cart so that for future events (our rummage sale, even), we won't have to rely on aging human bodies to move everything.  Good idea, huh?  Why couldn't someone have thought of this earlier?? ;)

DR George - Check you shoes.  It's amazing what a new, not worn-in pair of shoes will do for one's health!  With the amount of walking - and sometimes running - that I do, I've found I need to buy a new pair every six to nine months - which is actually suggested by the "experts" - and I don't mean Tom Cruise.  ;)

I've also learned to rotate my shoes from day to day.  That helps too.

Jane: Got watermelon and will eat it in a little while.

"No one is alone"  I'M alone, damn it all - no one is here to love and understand me - oh, what hard luck stories they all hand me.  No one to rub my feet or my neck or my head.  I fight alone.

I don't even remember what projects I was working on when that whole thing happened.  I tend to want to look forward, not backward.  I have a few things in mind and when I'm able to do them, I'll probably do them

Miss Channing: I don't think she's so hot on the original album, but no, she was not in good voice when we did the revival.  I ultimately had to fly to Rochester to fix the worst of it.  But, she's who she is, and I'm rather fond of the album.

Jennifer: Once you click "Buy now" you are taken to a page where all the shipping stuff is laid out plainly.  We settled on 3.50 for the States (even though I lose money at that rate) and something like 6 or 7 for out of the country (and I probably lose money there, too).

Speaking of the original HELLO, DOLLY, I keep meaning to buy the new pressing of it to get the Merman cuts which have been added to it. The new pressing of OLIVER! has additions as well which I need to have.

The only DOLLY! CD I have right now is BK's revival pressing.

Evening all.  I have been a very busy person.  I would say I am woman, hear me roar but I'm to tired.  It's more like hear me yawn.

I mowed the back and front yard.  Used the whip to edge, used the blower to clean the porch, did 3 loads of clothes, cleaned the bathroom up, washed out the sink, tub and toilet and last but not least, I made a pot of bean soup.   Not that I can have the soup but I felt like making it.

Sorry to hear that your sore, DR George.  At least it's a good sore for a good cause.   :)

I hope that DR Ann  & BK feels better soon.  All this flu and it's summer!  Not good.

I had clicked on "buy now" before i posted and all it said was something like "shipping and handling may be added at checkout".  It didn't say anything about actual amounts.  Perhaps once you've gone to check-out it does.  All I meant though, is that I really prefer to know the exact shipping costs in advance.  I know that even at amazon you often have to go right to checkout to get the shipping costs.  But I don't think it should be this way.

Curious, is it $6 or $7 for canada as well, or just for overseas?
Title: Re:FIGHTING THE GOOD FIGHT
Post by: bk on June 26, 2005, 05:07:24 PM
Yes, it's all lumped under "international" anywhere out of the US.  You do have to go to checkout, just like amazon, and that's where it's calculated.  It's too much information (all the variables) to put on the album listing page.

Yeas...it's the tooth.  I've been relieved of the horrible pain and replaced it with a different pain, but at least one that's manageable with meds.

It's caused some disruptions in my sleeping patterns, but I spent many of those sleepless hours working diligently on the trivia question -- the multi-layered, many-clued, mind-numbing trivia question.  I think I acquitted myself well by it.  Time will tell.

I am back from a "prideful" (is that a word?) day. It began with brunch at the New Venus at 23rd Street and 8th Avenue at 11:15am. The place was very busy and a friend was late so it was not a wonderful time. The service was less efficient than in the past but it was very busy. Have to keep that in mind. We then went off to 19th Street and Fifth Avenue to await the arrival of the Parade/March, whatever you want to call it. Some call it a march to keep the political idea intact, others call it a parade because, frankly, that's what it is. This year, I actually call it a little dull. I saw lots of politicians like Hilliary Clinton, Michael Bloomberg, Al Sharpton, Charles Schumer and others. Also diverse groups from Gay Armenians to children being pulled in wagons with signs praising their Lesbian moms.

We left before the whole thing was over. We wandered over near the Village (I knew that was a mistake before we got there but do they listen to me? Nooooo) We ended up at Caliente Cab Company. There were 3 of us. We each had one frozen margarita, a side of guacamole, salsa and chips and a medium size quesidila cut into 4 pieces. There were also two diet Cokes in the mix. That's ALL we had. The bill upon leaving was $75 plus tip. A bit excessive for my taste. Oh, well. I had a very nice time with my friends and as we walked uptown and away from the madness we had a very good talk about things going on. It was, all in all, a nice day. I'm glad to be home and need to go to bed since I have to go to work in the morning.

Nytol!

Was channel surfing.

(Not the one between England and France)

I came across It's A Mad Mad etc in a terrible scan and pan. Of course there was a commercial break but what was interesting is that AMC is premiering two "lost" John Wayne films. Island in The Sky and The High and the Mighty. July 16th and 17th.

I am sure they will be a bitch to watch, I just might wait for the DVD releases.

Yes, those John Wayne movies will both be released on DVD, and I'm really looking forward to getting THE HIGH AND THE MIGHTY.

I don't want to even think what this early Cinemascope (probably 2.55:1) movie would look like in AMC's pan and scan abomination.

SWW at least your out-of-stepdaughter  wants you at the family celebrations.   ;D

LOL I expect children to behave without their game-boys, but all that activity must have been too much for them.  I bet all the other children were running free in the restaurant.  We went to McDonalds and the kids sat still.  I think the blame belongs with the parents, not McDonalds.

Sorry about the Peggy episode.  Have you begun looking for a new home for her?  Maybe the organization you foster her through can get serious about it now.

Good Evening!

I ended up heading over to Andy's where I fixed some stuff on his computer, and then we drove over to Reston Towne Center to catch a movie.  We decided to see the not-so-new-anymore "Star Wars" movie.  I liked it, did not love it by any means.  However, there were some pretty good sequences,  my favorite being the end where all the groundwork was laid for "Star Wars: A New Hope".  -And as DR elmore had mentioned, hearing the "Luke and Leia" theme was a very nice touch.

The acting - or lack thereof - in the movie bugged me to no end.  Only the villains seemed to be in the same movie, so to speak.  Everyone else just seemed to be playing themselves and speaking their lines.  And then there was all that CGI "acting".  Although it's been years since I've seen the "first" one, I distinctly remember a mock-yet-sincere Shakespearean approach to the acting.  Yes, they were having fun up there in this big adventure, but it always came back to the big picture, the battle between good and evil.  Yes, I know many years have passed since the "first" Star Wars came out, but a lot of the acting just seemed too contemporary, too relaxed to me.  Even some of the bit parts were painfully miscast, amazingly over- and under-acted to me.

Oh, and I miss Yoda being a puppet.  Talk about being CGI-ed to death!  I felt he looked less real in this movie than in the previous ones.

And I did find myself wishing for more real people, real sets, real lights, etc. as the movie went along.  Computers have definitely helped the craft of movies, I just wish they didn't make the movies so much nowadays.  Seems like more science than art.

...Just my two cents.

But it was nice to see a movie again in a theatre - the first time I had seen anything since "Team America" in Houston last fall.

After the movie, we walked over to the Rio Grande Cafe for a late dinner.  Very good Tex-Mex food, and a very cute if somewhat absent-minded waiter.

:)

Actually, if you want to talk Times Square mark-ups, look no further than the "World's Largest TGIFriday's".  A friend and I stopped in there for a quick bite to eat once.   And that was definitely the last and only time I'll ever go in there.  The appetizers started at $8.95, and none of the entrees could be had for less than $12.  *And then if you head uptown about three blocks to the other TGIFriday's, the prices there are more in line with the national chain average.  Location, Location, Location.

*The couple of times I've been in the Times Square McDonald's - it's right next to the Equity Building (audtions, etc.) -  I haven't really noticed any major upping of the prices.  Now the ones along the Turnpike are a totally different story.
