Title: FEELING MY OATS
Post by: bk on June 29, 2005, 12:02:40 AM
Well, you've read the notes, you've felt the notes, the notes have felt your oats, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're not feeling their oats, they're EATING their oats.

My favourite movie theatre (the building still exists) was the State theatre in Melbourne.  It was decorated in Roman villa style - columns and statues etc., and had a fake starry night sky and the lights (or stars) were the last to die before the movie started. The theatre also had a wurlitzer that came up from the floor at interval.  It was a magic theatre for me. In the late sixties the cinema was divided into two (The Forum and the Rapello). I'm not sure of its use now but I suspect it has a Heritage listing. I hope it is returned to its former glory .

Well, I guess Miss Jill Clayburgh isn't COMPLETELY forgotten, since she'll be starring on Broadway come January in the Mildred Natwick role in the Barefoot in the Park revival.

Hmm...  I had no real favorite theatre growing up.  We moved around so much, that I never got attached to anyone in particular.  My parents did like drive-ins, and there were many nights when we'd stay to see the first feature again after the second feature had already aired. And, yes, we even bought that contraption that kept the rain of the windshield when it rained. Well, it almost kept the rain off the windshield.

Once I was in high school, my favorite theatre was which ever one happened to be showing the movie I wanted to see, and happened to have a decent ticket price.  -Lots of bargain matinees and twilight shows.  I saw a lot movies at Skyline Mall and Tysons Corner Center.   The malls are still there - with some modifications - however, part of the modifications for each mall was the removal of the theatres.  Ah, well.   *However, it looks like Tysons will be regaining some theatres in it's new wing.

Currently, my favorite place to see a movie is at the Byrd Theatre in Richmond, VA.  A classic old movie house.  And on Saturday nights, Bob Gulledge is still at the Mighty Wurlitzer.  Although, when I first came to Richmond, Bob Lent and Lin Lunde would also play.

It's a second-run house, so movies only cost $1.99 - it used to be only $0.99 for the longest time.  However, the Byrd is sort of infamous for it's not-so-comfortable seating.  But for a $1.99.... Not a bad deal.

The Byrd is also locally noted for it's own "No Talking, No Trash, etc." commercial that they run before each movie.  It's done in a very funny, campy manor.  And so many people have seen it so many times, that you're bound to hear someone around you saying the words along with the actors on the screen.  It was filmed when I started school, and, consequently, a couple of people I went to school with are featured in it.

My favourite movie theatre growing up was the Hiland Theatre on North Fort Thomas Avenue im Fort Thomas, Kentucky, where I grew up.  It was also the only theatre in town.  We saw everything there.  It was run by Kenny Broadhurst...a single man who lived with his mother.  In retrospect, he was probably rather put upon by us kids, but he ran a tight ship and was viligent in telling us to keep our feet of the backs of seats and to hush up when we were too loud and patrolling the aisle with a flashlight for misbehaviour.  In fact, if there were more guys like Kenny keeping miscreant patrons in line, I might go out to the movies more often.

Another great thing was that the concession stand was at the back of the theatre itself, not, in the lobby, so that you could actually go back to it in the middle of the movie and get something with out missing any of the movie.  I think the last movie I saw there the Timothy Dalton/Anna Calder-Marshall, Wuthering Heights when I was in college.  It closed shortly after that and became an insurance company.

I also remember all the big movie palaces in downtown Cincinnati, which were where you went for a date...The Albee, the Keith, others.

In college, there was the run-down Opera House on Broadway in downtown Lexington.  It had once been a grand touring house where people like the Barrymores had played.  When I was in school, it was a 65-cent double-feature, third-run house where I saw a lot of great movies...The Fixer, Private Life  of Sherlock Holmes, Support Your Local Sheriff, the strange Royal Hunt of the Sun.

A few years later, the theatre was refurbished for theatre again and had its opening with Julie Harris in Belle of Amherst,, which I saw.  In the eighties, it was where my Sherlock Holmes play, The Ebony Ape, premiered.  It is the major house where touring shows are booked.

I love old movie houses.  Unfortunatley, they have all disappeared here in Northern Caliifornia.  The only one that I know of that is still in all its granduer is the Stanford Movie Theatre in Palo Alto.  They even have a MIghty Wurlitzer.  It's sad the way the old houses have gone.

One of my favorites was the Seville Theater which is just a shell of its former self. I posted pictures of it a month ago. There was also the Loewe's, Palace (The buildings exists but they are no longer movie theaters and the Capitol. These were major movie palaces. Beautiful ornate like many of the classic Broadway Theaters. But economics either had them torn down or subdivided into multiplexes and even later closed down when people went to other multiplexes in the burbs instead of a night on the town in downtown Montreal. I have found memories. I even went to the Palace theater before it was made into a multiplex and saw the last film there. I kept the stub for years as a momento. But the movie was a sex/gore that I walked out on. It was called if memory serves. Greta the Mad Butcher (or something like that) It was a followup to the Ilsa the She Wolf of the SS movies that the same "actress" did.

Greetings from SW Ohio!  I returned home from Chicago late last night and took time only to skim the posts from the 4 days I was gone.  Missed you all and want to send special vibes to DR ozderek as he deals with his situation that puts all the inconveniences in my life into stark perspective.

Also, to DR elmore (who I apparently missed early this morning), travel and LoC research vibes - maybe DR Jose would convey these for me?

The trip to Chicago went decidedly downhill after my post on Saturday.  My friend/travel companion/roommate was sick all day Sunday and I was sick all day Monday.  We don't know if we shared a case of food poisoning or a 24-hour flu bug, but it made me miss my most relevant conference day.  We were both sufficiently recovered to spend Tuesday morning in the exhibit hall and to have a smooth drive home (except for major traffic congestion around Indianapolis - they need an outer belt, DR Jrand!).

The best thing about staying in my room all day Monday was being able to admire this view from the 29th floor of the Hyatt Regency:

Growing up in Medford Oregon we only had three theaters...The Lithia Drive-in, The Holly, and The Craterian.

The Craterian seemed to play most of the films that I saw as a kid..the Disney movies, the Ray Harryhausen Sinbad movies, etc. I don't ever recall seeing much at the Holly Theater, and didn't go to the drive-in much until my late high school days.

None of the three theaters are in existence anymore. The Lithia is now used for swap meets, and I don't know what the Holly became.

The Craterian closed in the 80s and later was dusted off and renovated and turned into the Ginger Rogers Theater (or something like that) a few years ago. It looks nice, but totally different.

Question for DRs Jose, SWW or any other HHW experts!

I am still trying to get out the stain on my mamma mia shirt. It is 100% cotton and a very light blue.

I had a very bad stain on something white and I used bleach to rub it out. And it worked perfectly.  I happened to read the bleach bottle, and it seemed to me that it was saying that one could use bleach on non-white clothes.  They listed materials (like 100% cotton).

Now i have never used bleach on anything non-white. And i'm wondering what would happen if i rubbed this liquid bleach on my light blue shirt. I know bleach can wipe off the color of some things. So now i am so confused.

Anybody know?  I'm actually thinking it might work, since there was a beigy color on my white comforter and i rubbed the bleach on that and it worked there.

Any help would be great.

Reviews are coming in, and WAR OF THE WORLDS has been getting raves in the reviews I've seen thus far (raves for Spielberg, that is, and the film itself). The Charlotte reviewer gave it four stars (out of four) likening it in intensity to JURASSIC PARK and saying that the pacing and effects were superior. The VARIETY review also gushed about the film's potential blockbuster status. We'll see how the box-office results reflect these rave reviews.

I've mentioned it here before, but my favorite theater growing up was the Carolina Theater in Charlotte because it was the area's Cinerama theater. Going there was a BIG DEAL (we always wore Sunday clothes to this theater to see movies if you can remember such a thing). The Capri Theater, which opened with the area premiere engagement of MY FAIR LADY, was also a tremendously comfortable and beautiful theater to see movies in.

An old theater which served as our revival theater here was called the Visulite. It had a glass projection booth at the back of the theater, and it was interesting to see films being projected out of it.

I never lived anywhere near old movie theaters...just either run-down movie theaters or multi-plexes.  There's a new 16-screen movie theater that's being built right now in Lacey, which is right next to Olympia and less than two miles from where my parents live.

The Washington Center for the Performing Arts, where I frequently usher and have performed in many community theater productions, has shown silent movies with live accompaniment.  They also have a wonderful pipe organ built into the theater (from what I've been told...I've never seen a performance) that was restored not too long ago.

Jill Clayburgh is far too young to be playing Mildred Natwick-type roles.

Favorite movie theatres as a child (for no discernible reasons):  The Avalon (Kings Highway & East 18th Street).  The Kingsway (Kings Highway & Coney Island Ave.)  Radio City Music Hall (yes, I went there when they still ran movies, had a stage show, and you got to hear the Mighty Wurlitzer, all for about 15 centimes, or something.).  The Ziegfeld. Loew's (pronounced correctly in Brooklyn as "Lo-eez") Kings, where I saw "Hello, Dolly!"

Least favorite?  (Mostly due to the matrons that patrolled the kiddie sections):  The Brook (Flatbush & Flatlands Avenues; where I saw my first movie, "Yours, Mine and Ours"), and the Nostrand (Nostrand Avenue, off Kings Highway).  And I never liked the Kings Plaza Twin, which I think is now a quad.

Well, there IS the Castro in San Francisco, and here in the Oakland area we have The Grand Lake theater, the Paramount and, closed thought it may be, the Fox.  All are old-time movie palaces.  The Grand Lake is a multplex, but on a rather grand scale, as such things go, and it retains its glam appeal.  The main theater is huge.  The Paramount is truly old-style, with organ, and special events are staged there as well as movie series...and the Oakland Symphony sometimes plays there (I think).

There are others, too, in surrounding communities.

My favorite theater when I was growing up was the (now-gone) Carolina Theater on the north end of Main Street in Greenville, South Carolina.

It was cavernous and the CinemaScope screen was the largest I've ever seen.  It was E-normous.  I saw the 1963 re-release of "The Robe" on that screen and I never saw a CinemaScope film fill that screen in the way that "The Robe" did.  When the theater was torn down, someone did a local news story on the theater, visiting its behind-the-screen areas before demolition...and discovered a vaudevillian history, with dressing rooms and prop rooms and costume rooms and tons of posters for all the acts/events that had been staged there since the 1920s.

If ever a theater should have been protected, that one is the one.  But like so many wonderful things from our past, it is gone forever.

DR Jennifer....bleach on the light blue shirt will work...if you want a white spot on your light blue shirt.

There are pre-laundry applications in your grocery store that are meant to alleviate spots....apply some before laundering.   Read labels to ensure the products are okay for color.

Some products you may find:  Spray 'n Wash, Shout, OxyClean.  Some are sprays, some are sticks.  I believe I used some "Shout" on a grease stain on a blue shirt.  Follow directions.  Some products must not be left on a stain for more than a few minutes before laundering begins.

DO NOT RUB BLEACH ON YOUR BLUE SHIRT!

I was amazed yesterday to find a thread on the recent trailer for Peter Jackson's "King Kong" -- and it was SO negative, although some reason prevailed.

I saw the trailer on TV and thought the film looked intriguing and exciting and I cannot wait to see it.  But I'm sure it will be discussed in mostly negative terms between now and December when it opens.

Yes, but Miss Natwick, like Mary Wickes and to some degree Miss Angela Lansbury, always "played" older.

Jill Clayburgh is still young to me.  And vibrant.  Sort of like a poor man's Diane Keaton.

Phyllis Newman.  That's who should be playing it.  Or Brenda Vaccaro.

Don't get me wrong, I am thrilled that Miss Clayburgh is working again.  But she still seems too young for it.

I attempted to watch an episode of "Empire" last night on ABC.  I had forgotten it was on this week, but I went to ABC at 9 p.m.

And the jig was up...the dialogue was so risible I felt my skin crawl.

What is it that makes people think that an English accent can pull off crappy dialogue.

And every name, as Gaius Julius Caesar greeted his friends, just HAD to be prefaced by an adjective...NOBLE Cicero....BRAVE Crassus....

GAG ME WITH A SPOON!

And Colm Feore, as Caesar, hasn't changed his facial expression since he made "Storm of the Century," that Stephen King miniseries of six years ago (and it was infinitely superior to last night's claptrap).

Just off the phone with paypal and all is well.  I had a little prob in that I had another paypal premiere business account, and so it was imposing "limits" as to how much I could withdraw from the "new" account.  We made one little switch (we downgraded the account I use for eBay purchases to a "personal" account) and that did the trick.

I must say, I am at that yucky point in this illness where I'm basically over the sore throat and stuff but it's all turned into unseemly PHLEGM and I'm having to honk this guck out of my nose every five minutes.  Plus the incessant and deep coughing isn't helping matters, especially my hoarseness.

DR Jennifer - As DR Ron Pulliam noted atlready, do not bleach your light blue shirt unless you want a white spot on your light blue shirt unless you want a white/lighter spot where your stain used to be.  Now, maybe you could take a Q-Tip and make some sort of design with the bleach - this way it would look like the "light show" at the top of the second act.  Or not.

;)

Yes, bleach is safe for 100% cotton clothes, but only in the sense that the bleach will not break down the fabric itself, the cotton fibers.  Some colors are color-fast and may not fade when bleach is applied, but you never know until you try.  *And you could "try" on an inside seam to test for colorfastness.  However...

There are also those various "Oxy" products you could try.

If you really want the stain out, take it to a dry cleaner/laundromat and have an "expert" look at it.  Unfortunately, depending on the type of stain it is and how long it has been set in by now, it just may not come out at all.   So, just bring it in, and ask, "Can you get this stain out?", and see what they say.

But the cost of the stain removal may be equivalent to the cost of another Mamma Mia! t-shirt.

And, remember, it is just a t-shirt.

DO NOT RUB BLEACH ON YOUR BLUE SHIRT!

That is the funniest thing i've read!

I am still confused, why does the bleach imply that you can use it for colors. You'd think it would say "USE ONLY ON WHITE".  And i'm confused why my beige lines on the comforter didn't turn white!

I used the spray in wash. Didn't work.

And, remember, it is just a t-shirt.

Say What????  Bite your tonge.

A well-loved T-shirt is priceless.  If it's stained, one cannot wear it.

I've taken clothes to cleaners with a stain they say they cannot get out.  And yet, they cleaned it and charged me for it, stain and all.  Weeks later, after applying a little "Shout" I got it out without any ill effect on color.

Try both ways, Jennifer.  Jose is correct that some stains just won't come out no matter what.  You won't know until you try.

But don't ever think of it as "just a T-shirt"!

That is the funniest thing i've read!

I am still confused, why does the bleach imply that you can use it for colors. You'd think it would say "USE ONLY ON WHITE".  And i'm confused why my beige lines on the comforter didn't turn white!

I used the spray in wash. Didn't work.

If your bleach is "Bleach for Colors," then it's safe for all colors.  But it's not the same as bleach for whites.

As Jose suggested, try a little on an inside seam...or the underside of the bottom hem of the shirt or a sleeve.

Can anyone please tell me the dates for HHW gathering in NYC in October?

If memory serves me correctly, DR Jane will be hopping on a train from DC to NYC sometime on the afternoon of Tuesday, October 4.  The festivities will commence that evening and continue through the weekend, at least Saturday, I believe.

The HHW Walking and Eating and Walking and Eating Some More Tour will probably take place on Thursday.  -This way people can catch matinees on Wednesday.

And since it looks like we'll be starting on the Lower East Side and working our way up to Artie's on the West Side...  Wear your comfortable shoes!

Thanks DRs RLP and Jose.

It's funny because I would never even have thought to put bleach on anything not white.  But reading the bleach bottle, really made me wonder.

I was thinking of just buying some patch/pasty things at the dollar store and trying that.  Actually the stain is much better.  IT's just unfortunate that I didn't notice it right away, so it was probably put in the dryer. :(

It just says "bleach - whitens and brightens".  I didn't know there was bleach for colors.  Under directions it says something like "use on these fabrics: white or colorfast".

I have another question for all you food experts.

I am planning desserts for a baby shower, and have been told that quite a few of the guests are diabetic.  Does anybody know any good and easy recipes i might try?

I am assuming that means i must not use any sugar.  But are artificial sweeteners okay?  And are natural sugars (from fruit) okay?

Thanks in advance.

DR Jennifer - Some colors are color-fast or at least won't fade out when bleach is applied.  Just depends on the type of dye they used and the fabric you're dealing with.

If it's a light-light blue color, you may want to try pre-treating the spot with a diluted solution of bleach and then washing it right away.  If what caused the stain was something oily, then those are usually the hardest to get out.  And even if you do get the stain out, sometimes the oil ends up "leaving" the original color of the fabric in it's place.  I have many "christened" shirts like that - but at least the accompanying meals were good.

:)

Your bleach is, primarily, for whitening.  "Colorfast" is, in my house, certain sets of sheets or towels....fabrics that won't fade or bleed or spot when bleach is properly added to the washer AFTER it is filled with water.

There is a separate bleach for colors product...Clorox makes one.  I'm sure other brands do, too.  You don't have to worry about Bleach for Colors on "colors"....it's safe for almost everything (save madras...don't ever bleach madras!!....and don't ever wash madras with anything else you want to wear).

What does the shirt's label say...if it's colorfast, the shirt label will say so.  Usually, they say "Do Not Bleach".

Just Google "diabetic desserts" and you'll get a ton of results, suggestions, recipes.

My suggestion would be to make at least one regular dessert and one "diabetic" dessert just so that everyone at the shower can have something.

Fresh fruit is good too - maybe just a simple, seasonal fruit salad.

However, depending on what Type of diabetes the person has, and how they're managing it, they may or may not partake at all.

DR Jennifer, you can likely find many dessert recipes for diabetics on the internet.

Along with sugar, diabetics must take care with carbs in general.

It is a good idea to make sure there are some foods such as meats, cheeses, vegis there for the diabetics to chomp on.

Crackers, cakes, cookies are things they would have to avoid, but certainly you can have them the other guests.

I tend to take my own food where ever I go, just in case.

Even though I told you about various food places, I will miss most of the daytime walk and eat tour on Thursday, October 6. I will probably join you all for dinner at Arties, but work for me in October is VERY busy and I can't take off a day, even for the fun involved. Depending on where you are in the tour I can probably join you for lunch (I'm at 16th Street and 5th Avenue, Ginny knows where I work) but that's it for the daytime activities.

Check your symbols against the Universal Fabric Care symbols.

Seems to me like your label says do not wash, do not dry clean, do not wear...but that CAN'T be right.

It's probably do not dry clean, do not bleach and do not iron.  That would be the norm, I'd think for a screened T-shirt.

I'm confused about this, BK.  I've gotten second chance offers from the original sellers...generally, it's because they have more than one of the items or it's because the high bidder backed out.

Are your offers coming from the seller of the item you bid on, or are these folks hitting on you because they know you're interested in an item and they're claiming to also have one?

To me, "Second Chance" is an EBay seller feature...and you shouldn't be getting them from scammers.

This might be like those PayPal scams folks are getting...

;D

Filipinos tend to like very sweet things for dessert - and very starchy/carby too.  Rice flour, rice, cassava root, sweet potatoes, yams, bananas, plantains, sweetened red beans, etc., figure heavily(!) in Filipino desserts.  Most definitely not diabetic-friendly foods.

And even though it may seem like we may eat "anything", we don't.  Just make sure it's either fried, served over shaved ice with condensed milk, served with sugar on the side for dipping (usually with sesame seeds and crushed peanuts mixed in), and/or steamed in banana leaves.  Then "we" will eat it.

No...the "no bleach" comments means that the other suggestions are the routes you should investigate.

Read labels of products that are intended to remove stains.  If Spray "n" Wash doesn't work, some other product might.

It really depends on the stain and what caused it.  Cotton is a durable fabric, but it also absorbs better than any other fabric.  It "may" be that the stain will never come out in a way that is unnoticeable.

But until you try various products -- following the products' instructions carefully -- you won't know what might be achievable.

My mom and I aren't even going to try to attempt making Filipino food. I think it would be pointless.  Because even the rice we make isn't the same.

We have someone else making a few Filipino dishes.

I'm just trying to decide which desserts to make.  I've been to a few Filipino functions and they seem to have liked fancy pies or cheesecakes or ice cream.  Since it's for my sis, i'm just going to show her the 4 dessert recipes i have, and ask her to choose which 2 she wants.  And then I will also attempt one diabetic friendly one.

Oy.

You can still try some bleach... However...

The laundry guidelines are the guidelines for the general washing of your clothes in order to keep them in the best shape possible from wash to wash with the least amount of wear and tear.  So, when a garment says No Bleach, it basically highly suggests that you do not use bleach when washing the garment normally.

Stains are not "normal", and that's when the rules are meant to be broken - or at least fudged.

The one "rule" I usually break is the Cold Water vs. Warm Water Wash.  (I always Rinse in Cold Water.)  Cold Water washing tends to preserve colors better.  However, even some colors can fade in Cold Water.  So, if I happen to have a batch of clothes that need washing and a bunch of them are "older", I tend to put everything into a Warm Wash.  I'm just used to washing clothes in Warm Water.

Back to desserts...

As DR MBarnum mentioned, diabetics have to watch their whole diet, not just the "sweets".  So depending upon what else is served at the shower, and what they choose to eat or not eat, desserts for them may be a moot point.  However, it's always nice knowing that someone thought to put something out that would be safe for them to eat.

*From my Mom's experience as a Registered Dietitian, I'd say put out a fresh bowl of fruit - a mix of berries is ideal - and maybe a bowl of sugar-free Jell-o, cubed up.

I remember seeing STARTING OVER at the movies, and it was such a departure for Burt Reynolds. I did like it.

I remember Burt was livid when his two co-stars were each Oscar nominated, but he wasn't. The fact that he wasn't had nothing to do with their doing a better job than he but simply that they had much less competition in their categories than he did as a leading man.

The nominees that year: Dustin Hoffman who won for KRAMER VS. KRAMER, Jack Lemon in THE CHINA SYNDROME, Al Pacino in AND JUSTICE FOR ALL, Roy Sheider in ALL THAT JAZZ, and Peter Sellers in BEING THERE.

I lucked out NOT getting to make a copy of BITTER SWEET. The movie was interrupted by a station ID warning that the cable service does once a month. Then, later on in the movie, the cable went blank for about two minutes before resuming. So, it was simply not meant to be, and I'm glad I didn't waste a blank DVD-R on it. NAUGHTY MARIETA seemed to record very well though the print was not in the best of shape. (BITTER SWEET looked flawless in Technicolor).

Yep - Diabetes - and other health issues - are prevalent among Filipinos.  And, most of "it" is due to the traditional Filipino diet.  Lots of pork, lots of salt, lots of oils and fats.  Well, more accurately, Filipino-Americans eating like they there were still back "home", but not "acting" like there were still back "home".  The typical "country life" in the Philippines is very physical, and most of that physical activity takes place in that very tropical climate, heat.  And, as we all know, life in the States - and North America - tends to lean toward the sedentary side.  In any case...

Stop apologizing for your food.  If people - Filipino or not - are hungry, they will eat.  If they're not, well, then you'll have plenty of leftovers.

*I learned a long time ago, that if you expect people not to like, not to eat your food, then they will most likely "fulfill" your intentions.

As for packaging me up... Well, I have a feeling the Canadian tariffs would make that possibility cost-prohibitive.

vening all!  Not much to say tonight.  I’m waiting for my supper to heat up in the old microwave.

Can anyone please tell me the dates for HHW gathering in NYC in October?

The main day/evening will be Wednesday,  October 5th.  That’s the day/evening of the “eating our way through the city” is take place and the “Girls night out with the Guys”.

I haven’t heard any other plans but I will be in NY starting on Saturday, October 1st and I leave on Saturday, October 8th.

Things didn’t work out quite the way I wanted to with the friends I was going to go see so it will only be a day trip to see them on Friday but my flight won’t leave on Saturday until about 7:30 PM.  That means I have all day on the 8th to do something.

Of course, I will be going to see Mr. Ball on Sunday, October 2nd at one o'clock.   ;D

I regret that this will have to be the last trip I take for awhile until I build up some vaction time and pay this trip off so I hope to make the most of it.

Ding!  Dinner is served--be back laters.

But you cannot tell me that most gay men could possibly know this much about getting a stain out.  Heck i'll bet my mom doesn't even know this much (although I think i may just show her my t-shirt and the bleach and ask her opinion).

I don't think that I am the target audience for the Tom Cruise PR, cause War of the Worlds is not really my kind of movie.

Also, DR Danise, there actually was a reality tv show called For Love or Money. And it had some of the elements of yours (maybe you read about it?).  It had one contestant and then a group of the opposite sex.  The contestant had to deceive the group, then at the end they both had the choice to be together or leave for $1Million (or something like that).

I had never heard of that show--at least not that I know of.  Maybe it was rolling around in my brain and just came out as a dream?  Thanks for telling me DR Jennifer

DR Danise mentioned Mr. Ball - assuming she meant Michael Ball - I've been wondering recently if it is a coincidence that Mr Ball is in NYC doing a stint with the NYC Opera just about the time when ALW is rehearsing "The Woman In White" to prepare for the opening in November.  Michael Ball did take over Michael Crawford's part to RAVE reviews in London, and since he didn't get to do the Bway production of "Chitty", wouldn't it be nice for him to be back on Broadway with an ALW show since he made his Bway debut in "Aspects of Love" and hasn't been back since?  It's all just a strange coincidence to me.....

Oh....

Thanks to all the DRs who clued me into as to where and what the Inwood section of Manhattan is.  My friend who's about to move out of her place also got back to me too with more info.  I would be at the end of the A line.  Hmm...  Not sure I want to be that far north.  Also, since it is at the end of the line, it's about a 30 minute trip to midtown on the subway.  Hmmm...  We'll see.  At least it's an option.

*However, if any other NYCers or NYC-bounders are interested, I can pass the info on to you.  My friend is a real estate agent, and she's just trying to find potential people to move into her place before it becomes officially listed - and, thus, additional broker and listing fees come into play.

DR's Jose and Tomovoz and other Studs Terkel fans - he's very much alive and was quite witty Sunday afternoon at a panel of Chicago authors.  His newest book, to be released in September is titled And They All Sang:  Adventures of an Eclectic Disc Jockey, conversations with singers - classical, opera, jazz, gospel, blues, folk, and rock.

The Spectator: Talk About Movies and Plays with the People Who Make Them
by Studs Terkel; Introduction by Garry Wills

Quote
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
In earlier oral histories such as Working, The Good War, and Hard Times, Studs Terkel showed a virtuoso talent for absorbing the small talk of regular Joes and Janes and turning it into a literary cross-hatch--Robert Browning and Herodotus, Margaret Mead and Steinbeck. It turns out all this was prologue. In The Spectator, Terkel reveals that if he loved the waitresses and hockey players of earlier books, it wasn't in "the way, nor to the same degree, as those in the world of the lively arts." You can tell, reading this book. The Terkel touch is all here, but in 50-plus interviews with the likes of Buster Keaton and Marlon Brando, James Cagney, Simone Signoret, Jacques Tati, and (weirdly) Arnold Schwarzenegger, it's Studs's range that astonishes. He has textured memories of remote stage productions of Arthur Miller's plays--which you might expect. But when he remembers Kanchenjungha with the Indian filmmaker Satyajit Ray, Ray laughs out loud: "Where did you see that?" There are lovely little fender benders, too: in a basement apartment in Paris in 1963, Simone Signoret extravagantly praises Françoise Rosay and Agnes de Mille, characters we know from earlier chapters--de Mille especially. A choreographer who brought ballet to Broadway musicals, she explains that African rhythms and English clog dancing married to beget tap; with a shift from up to down beat, she says, "syncopation and jazz were born." Reading The Spectator, you marvel once again at Terkel's facility with people of all kinds--and his deep familiarity with the American century. --Lyall Bush--This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

Well, I can't help you on that one, I can only defend citizens charged with federal crimes, but I do actually have an eBay seller as a client right now. Watching SWEETHEARTS today I was reminded of a couple of Adrian costumes for THE WIZARD OF OZ. The pink dress that Glinda wears in OZ was supposedly a revamp of a costume from SAN FRANCISCO, but I'd be willing to swear that Jeanette MacDonald's pink ball gown in the movie was the dress folks have often said was Glinda's. There are also some blue gingham dresses in the windmill sequence that look VERY similar to the dress Judy wears throughout OZ.

Funny how I'd never noticed these costume designs before today, but they are definitely inspirations for the dresses Adrian did for OZ.

DR Jane, the police van is manned by a civilian company that issues the tickets and shares the profits with the City. We called the police right away and left a voice mail, and about three hours later we got a call from the civilian company. They informed us that it is their right to park in the right-of-way. However, the City requires that we landscape the right-of-way. I guess we'll just have to see what happens.

Thanks for the link DR Jane. I see Medford is finally getting some culture...and big names too! Ben 'Vereen, Carol Channing...!

Here's a Ben Vereen story  (I hope that this doesn't offend anyone!! ;) ):  here in Olympia, there is the Washington Center for the Performing Arts (I usher there quite often).  The first major performer to perform at the center after it opened was Ben Vereen.  After the show, my friend Sally was one of the people to help clean up the green room.  She told me that she went into the "star's dressing room" and in the toilet was a turd!  Yes, that's what I said...it is her word!  Sally (my friend) is absolutely convinced that it was left by none other than Mr. Ben Vereen!

That's my Ben Vereen story. ;D

And on that note (Q diminished), good night all. :) I want to get to work early.  I have my annual evaluation in the afternoon and I must be bright eyed and bushy tailed.

I am annoyed right now.  My throat, which felt almost all better this morning, is now really sore again.  I think it must be the endless hacking cough, but I'm concerned that like with some bugs that it might all come back again.  THAT I do not need.

Well, I must say, why is it that some requests seem to be simply beyond the ability of comprehension of those who are responsible for it?

Why is it impossible to have a swinging kitchen door on the set?  Why does it not work?  Why do I have to deal with this?  Why am I taking it off its hinges at eleven o'clock at night and trying to fix it?

I don't think I am going to have a door on my set.

I don't want to direct this play anymore.  It has suddenly become a play about a door.

This is terrible.

BUT the posts today were lovely.  AND I got a nice package from DR MBARNUM today....including one of my new favorite movies MANSION OF THE GHOST CAT....and a movie starring Mr Ray Chiao!

Thanks!
